The understanding and the development of sound theoretical basis concerning the pile foundations has been phenomenal during the past few decades, considering the thousands of years the piles have evidently been in use. The importance of the quality assurance and the need for verification of load bearing capacity is being further reinforced rather than undermined by these developments. This is evidenced by significant developments made in the pile load test technology in recent decades, making it possible to make judicious selection of a test method, or a package of test methods, suitable for a given situation. The selection depends on the objective of carrying out the test and the reliability desired. Presently, the possible selection ranges from dynamic to static methods. The extent of dynamic effect in a test can be reckoned based on a dimensionless parameter defined as the 'relative duration'. Examples of different load tests are given for illustration of the different methods currently in use.

MORE than thirty members of the Coal Division attended the Coal Land Valuations Round Table on Monday morning. Chairman Dilworth stated that the Committee had been appointed to take up the question and, after reading the list of members of the Committee, pointed out that the object of the meeting was to formulate a plan of action rather than to discuss any phases of valuation, per se. To this end he presented a tentative outline of points to be considered in the future by the Committee. After a lively discussion on the desirability of inclusion of some questions in the agenda of the Committee, the following outline was adopted :

Key issues in managing information systems in the minerals industry will likely continue to be those relating to the integration and interoperability of disparate systems. This paper argues that, in order to harness the promised benefits of information technologies, the mining industry should adopt a set of open systems standards to define data formats and protocols for seamless data exchange. This is in direct contrast to the present situation where mining equipment, software and instrument suppliers rigidly adhere to proprietary standards for fear of losing competitive advantage. Benefits to the mining sector resulting from the adoption of such standards would be: the provision of near-time data for executive decision support, and the freedom to choose best technologies. The principal benefits to the leading mining software suppliers will be increased market share as a result of “captive sites” converting to open systems standards. Examples are given of open systems standards developed for related industries such as the Petroleum Open Systems Corporation (POSC) and the Machinery Information Management Open Systems Alliance (MIMOSA).

FERGUS County, Mont., shown in Fig. 1, is known for its once famous gold mines near the old towns of Gilt Edge, Maiden, and Kendall. But at Heath, a small farming community near the foothills of the Snowy Mountains, thousands of tons of gypsum have been mined since 1916. The value of the gold taken from the mines of Fergus County runs into millions of dollars; the value of the products made from the gypsum of the Heath mine is also in the millions. The gypsum mine will continue to produce for many years, while the gold mines are closed today. The Heath gypsum mine was developed by the Northwest Gypsum Co. in 1916. The products of the small mill built by this company were plaster, agricultural gypsum, and raw gypsum for cement manufacturing. The United States Gypsum Co. prospected the adjacent property in 1916 and 1917 by means of two adits and some exploration drill holes. During World War I, the company abandoned operations at Heath, but again became active in this area in 1928 hen it purchased all the property of the Northwest Gypsum Co. A long range program of expansion was begun with the building of a block plant and the purchase of additional land and mineral rights. A modern wall board plant was built in 1936. When the old wooden mill purchased from the Northwest Gypsum Co. burned in 1937, an all-metal calcining plant located at Blue Rapids, Kansas, was dismantled, moved to Heath, and erected on the site of the mill. In August 1951 a new mine was opened 3000 ft north of the mill. Rock is conveyed from the mine to the mill by an 18-in. belt conveyor. The Heath gypsum deposit lies at the base of the Ellis formation of Jurassic Age. The Ellis at Heath lies unconformably on the black fissle shale of the Heath formation of the Big Snowy Group, which is Mississippian in age. The strike of the gypsum bed is N45°E and the dip approximately 3" NW; the regional strike and dip of the area. The gypsum lies in a series of six layers separated from each other by thin seams of shale. The lower layer is composed of' gypsum and shale intermingled and is not of commercial grade. The upper five layers are high in purity, but only the middle four layers are mined on the advance, as the top layer is left for roof support. This top layer is mined on retreating operations at the same time the pillars are robbed. Total thickness of the gypsum layers varies from 12 to 14 ft. Fig. 2 shows the average thickness and arrangement of the layers. Mining Methods The mine was originally developed by driving an adit into the gypsum horizon. The Northwest Gypsum Co. mined in the top four layers, the top layer being split, leaving about 12 in. for roof support. A modified room and pillar method was used: entries were 15 ft wide and rooms varied between 20 and 30 ft and were turned on 90" from the entries. Crosscuts between the rooms left pillars from 10 to 20 ft square. The rock was loaded by hand into 1-ton mine cars and pulled to a central gathering point by mules; from the gathering point, mules or horses were used to pull the string of cars to the mill tipple. This method was continued by the United States Gypsum Co. from 1928 to 1937.

Like the Arizona jeans commercial says: Arizona's not just a state, its a state of mines. Nearly 300 mines operate in Arizona making it the largest nonfuel mining state in the nation. Although copper is king in Arizona's mineral complex, nonmetallic minerals play important roles both regionally and nationally. Throughout Arizona's mineral resource development history industrial minerals have dominated over the metals for most, but not recent years. The State's metal mining industry which makes Arizona the number one mining state in the United States is a relatively young phenomenon. Arizona was an important industrial mineral producer long before her metal mining industry got started. Salt, phosphates, silicates, and oxides as food additives, tanning chemicals, gemstones, components of aboriginal ordnance, pigments, and construction materials are among the minerals produced long before copper, gold, silver, and the other metals became important. Around 92 % of Arizona's mineral industry is made up of nonfuel minerals, 86 % of that is accounted for by copper. Another 4 % is taken up by copper byproducts of molybdenum, silver, and gold. The remaining 10% of the production is occupied by non-fuel, non-metallic minerals. Arizona's 1994 industrial mineral production of nearly $380 million ranks us among the top 25 in the nation and higher than the total mineral production of at least 15 states.

The technology of flotation recovery of silver from the residue of a zinc plant is described. The peculiarity of this technology is a preliminary pulp conditioning in sodium chloride solution in the presence of aluminum metal under high temperature. In this process the silver is converted to the metallic phase and then floated with the usual sulphydryl collectors. A variant using a combined technology is also described, in which before flotation is performed about 50 per cent of silver is leached. The total silver recovery with the combined technology comes up to 90 - 94 per cent.

A new type Pb-Ag (0.8wt%)-Bi (0~5.0wt %) alloy used as anode in electrowinning of zinc from sulphuric acid electrolytes was prepared. The electrochemical properties of this ternary lead alloys have been tested and compared with those of Pb-Ag (0.8wt %) anodes used in industry. Results show the anodic overpotential decreases with the increasing of Bi content in the alloys. When the content of Bi was 1.0 wt% and 5.0 wt%, the anodic overpotential is about 40?50 mV and 60?80 mV lower than that of Pb-Ag (0.8wt %) alloy, respectively. The formation of oxide layers on the surface of these alloys was traced by LSV methods and the composition of the anodic oxide layers was characterized by XRD and SEM analysis. The surface layer on the two type anodes examined is mainly composed of a?PbO2 and ß?PbO2. But different structure of the surface layer was observed, Pb-Ag (0.8wt%)-Bi (1.0wt %) has a more fine-grained structure as compared to Pb-Ag (0.8wt %). But the film on Pb-Ag (0.8wt%)-Bi (3.0wt %) alloy is rather friable, cracked and not tightly attached to the anode.

Since World War II we have all been treated to repeated public and private evaluation of the population explosion. Improvements in medicine and agriculture have brought greater life expectancy and a decreasing infant mortality rate. This has brought boom conditions to some areas-and pressures everywhere for the amenities of life: a little elbow room, a tree or a pot of flowers, space to hike or swim with some freedom have all become premium commodities. With this wish for privacy and attractive surroundings, people are being forced to move to once sparsely populated areas. Suburbs expand or sprawl, depending on the point of view. New country is touched by a freeway and houses and stores spring up overnight. Entire new cities are born to meet the increasing mobility of industry and its work force.

At Rogesa in Dillingen, Germany, a joint venture company of AG der Dillinger Hüttenwerke and Saarstahl AG and at Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH in Salzgitter the sinterplants are equipped with the Paul Wurth EFA™ process for the final sinterplant off-gas cleaning. In Dillingen two and in Salzgitter one EFA™ plant are in operation at the respective sinterplants to comply with the very stringent environmental rules prevailing in Germany according to the German Clean Air Act called “TA Luft”. The main target is to eliminate or reduce emissions like dust, sulfur components, dioxins/furans and others in the sinter process off-gas. Since 2006 and 2011 the two EFA™ plant are in operation at Rogesa while the EFA™ plant in Salzgitter was also commissioned in 2011. These installations significantly contribute to the improvement of the emission situation of the Dillingen and Salzgitter Works. The EFA™ technology is the state-of-the-art process for such kind of application in terms of additive and energy consumption, reliability and availability. The report gives an overview of the EFA™ process and the performance results of the Dillingen and Salzgitter plant.

Two methods of calibrating the parameters K and Alpha for use in Gy’s formula for the fundamental sampling error were investigated. Approximately 480 kg of broken ore from Harmony’s Target gold mine in South Africa was used to compile the replicate samples for two experiments. The duplicate series analysis (DSA) and segregation free analysis (SFA) methods differ in terms of their approach to recovering the sized materials required for the calibration procedure. In this experiment the DSA method split off six more-or-less equal masses of material from a 75 kg lot that was successively crushed to finer and finer fragment sizes. The sublots so formed were split into 32 samples and fire assayed for gold. The SFA method used approximately 250 kg of broken ore crushed to 95 per cent passing 2.50 cm, which was then passed through successively finer screens until a sublot of less than 0.0075 cm was obtained. Each of the 15 sublots obtained in this way were split using a riffle splitter into 32 samples that were fire assayed. A total of 672 fire assays were used in these experiments. The sampling parameters K and Alpha were used for the compilation of a nomogram and to calculate the gold liberation size of the ores. While there are no definitive results in terms of the actual gold grain sizes against which the calculated sizes can be compared, it appears that the DSA method produces more acceptable results.CITATION:Minnitt, R, 2014. Turbulence and its distribution are of great importance in flotation, and have received considerable attention recently. However, there is no mature technique to measure turbulence in three-phase (liquid-solid-gas) industrial flotation cells due to the opaque, highly aggressive and abrasive nature of the slurry involved. Previous research has shown that the piezoelectric vibration sensor (PVS) is a promising tool for turbulence measurement in industrial flotation cells. The PVS is a robust device that converts mechanical vibration to electrical signal, from which turbulence information can be extracted. An improved calibration method has allowed development of a frequency model to calculate the force applied to the sensor. Experimental results and comparison with laser doppler anemometry (LDA) have shown that the PVS can measure fluid kinetic energy, which is related to turbulent kinetic energy, a parameter used in the literature to represent turbulence in flotation. Laboratory measurement in a two-phase (water and air) 60 L cell and with slurry in a 3.5 L cell gave good stable results and mostly consistent trends between the measured turbulence profile and cell operation. When applied in a 300 m3 industrial cell filled with water, the addition of air or slurry to the cell resulted in a shift in the turbulence profile. This is expected because a change in fluid density will change the force applied to the sensor. It is therefore concluded that the piezoelectric sensor is an easy-to-use and robust technique that is fully capable of measuring turbulence in industrial flotation environments.CITATION:Meng, J, Tabosa, E, Xie, W, Runge, K C and Holtham, P, 2014. Thermal barrier coating (TBC) systems provide thermal insulation to high temperature for aero¬propulsion. A fracture mechanical model developed earlier for multilayer systems is applied on TBC to realize superior performance by enhancement of fracture resistance. Functionally gradient materials (FGM) solution concept is the basis of approach followed here. A few realistic FGM TBCs are considered in the analysis in addition to a conventional TBC as the base case and a hypothetical worst case with YSZ-YSZ interface. Parameters like number, composition and thickness of graded layers and elastic modulus are considered for the analysis and quantitative improvement of fracture resistance of TBCs. The analysis is confined to deep crack with crack size to width ratio as 0.5.

A uniaxial compression experiment was conducted on standard sandstone specimens to explore the sandstone’s mutation characteristics and early warning interval during deformation and failure. Meanwhile, acoustic emission (AE) and digital image correlation (DIC) techniques were introduced to realize multi-field analysis and cross-validation from the stress field, deformation field, and elastic wave field. The mutation characteristics of rock failure were investigated based on the cusp catastrophe theory. The results showed four mutation points in the destabilization process of sandstone: compressional density, yielding, destruction, and residual retention. As an internal activity characteristic of the sandstone failure process, AE directly reflected the dynamic failure process of sandstone. The stress variation was closely related to the evolution of AE characteristics. Sandstone loading failure was a process of the mutations of releasable elastic strain energy, dissipative energy, and releasable elastic strain energy. The mutation of dissipative energy was used as the starting mark of the sandstone warning state, and the second mutation of releasable elastic strain energy was used as the end mark of the sandstone warning state. Besides, the warning range corresponded to the loading time of 178 to 208 s. Finally, the sandstone instability warning interval was re-determined from deformation field evolution characteristics in the sandstone damage process, with a loading time of 180–204 s. This was consistent with the warning interval specified using the cusp catastrophe theory. The combination of AE, DIC, and cusp catastrophe theory revealed the mutation characteristics and early warning interval of sandstone failure. Hence, the results provide significant importance to predicting rock failure.

The selective separations of trace metals- and organics from water are processes of importance to industry. The application of a new metals capture technology coupled with polymer membrane technology has proven to be one avenue to accomplish such selective separations. The polymers used in these studies are polyphosphazenes. Polyphosphazene polymers consist of an alternating backbone of nitrogen and phosphorus atoms. The polymers have high thermal and chemical stabilities. Experiments at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory demonstrate that polyphosphazene membranes coupled with Chromato Chem,"Chelation Chromatography" process are capable of removing both chlorinated hydrocarbons and metal ions from process streams. These results point to a wide range of potential industrial and environmental applications for such systems. Data will be presented which show the efficiency and selectivity of separations, postulated separation mechanisms, and the initial designs of industrial demonstration units which are currently under construction. Parts of this work have been performed under a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) between ChromatoChem, Inc. and Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL). FINLAND'S recent mining history is both dramatic and pitiful in its shifting fortunes, dominated as it has been, by the country's proximity to the border zone of opposing dictatorships and social traditions; Fascism to the south, Communism to the east, and Democracy to the west. After 108 years under Russia's more or less harsh rule, Finland gained its democratic independence during the 1917 revolutionary strife in Russia with the official help of Germany and spontaneous help of other neighbors. The young nation was attacked by Russia in 1939 and again in 1941. It is common knowledge how the Finns fought with everything they had and everything they could get against their overwhelming adversary, and how by force of circumstances they landed in the Axis camp in 1941. Finland has never been known as a mining country in the same way as near-by Sweden, whose abundant iron and copper smelters during long periods so greatly contributed to the nation's welfare. Its largely barren, Archaean-granite geology long seemed forbidding. Some mining was done, to be sure; copper and tin at Pitkaranta near the Russian border, and lead and copper at Orijarvi. But towards the end of the last century the absence of a single producing mine cast a pessimistic shadow of truth over the Finnish poet Runeberg's words, that

The effect of superficial gas rate distribution (Jg profile) on down-the-bank metallurgical response was tested in the rougher-scavenger bank (eight 10-m3 tank cells, 4 roughers and 4 scavengers) at Highland Valley Copper Mine's Cu/Mo separation circuit. Three Jg profiles were tested: (a) as found (i.e., typical practice), (b) increasing decreasing (i.e., increasing from cell 1 to 4 and decreasing from cell 5 to 8), and (c) decreasing-increasing (i.e., decreasing from cell 1 to 4 and increasing from cell 5 to 8). The Jg profile approach proved to be of considerable value. Profile (b) gave the best metallurgical results, i.e., the highest down-the-bank grade/recovery (increase in grade at constant recovery was approx. 3-4% compared to the as found case) and the most efficient Cu/Mo separation (cumulative Cu recovery was reduced by almost half - approx. from 20% to 12%, at 99% Mo recovery). The success of the evaluation prompted the implementation of profile (b). Detailed gas dispersion characterization tests (Jg and Db (bubble size)) showed significant discrepancies between the Jg measured directly (using the McGill University sensor) and the Jg calculated from field instrument readings (volumetric gas flowmeter) and machine dimensions (cell cross-sectional area). Tests were designed to reveal the source of disagreement. It was observed that a significant number of bubbles were not able to float (i.e., they were entrained with the tailings), the evidence appearing to be a significant number of very small bubbles (approx. 200-300 µm) which did not have sufficient buoyancy to rise. Consequently, rather than relying on the field instrument, the evaluation depended on the McGill University Jg sensor, which collects bubbles in a tube near the pulp-froth interface, thus providing significance to the data as the measurements were obtained from bubbles that almost certainly floated.

Forecasting demand is an art as well as a science, and much personal judgment is required. National forecasts made for sand and gravel, crushed stone, and/or aggregate may be misleading or unhelpful locally. This is because of significant variation in demand within different geographic and/or political areas in the United States, and/or the use of an inadequate data base and forecasting methodology. The best forecasts may be made for local or regional market areas, irrespective of geographic or political boundaries, provided a proper data base is available. The Bureau of Mines compiles detailed statistics on commodities sold or used in the construction industries and, therefore, is in an advantageous position to make national aggregate demand forecasts.

As Australia’s coal and iron ore export volumes increase to meet international market growth, port terminals, mining operations and rail transport systems can be the source of increased dust emission. Current and future sustainable expansion must minimise dust emission from bulk handling and transport operations located in close proximity to residential areas. Lower level dust emissions can be controlled by operational measures such as water addition to products, and use of water spray on stockpile surfaces. Recent research has shown that higher levels of dust emission can be more effectively controlled by understanding and treating the dust characteristics of each individual bulk product. Application of this research, progressively being applied at Australia’s coal and iron ore port terminals and rail transport systems, is achieving compliance with health standards and minimising dust nuisance effects to an acceptable level.

The mainline running tunnels for Legacy Way comprise of two-lane tunnel boring machines (TBM) driven tunnels. The length of the TBM tunnel section is approximately 4.2 km. The TBMs employed are double shield TBMs. Typical support to the segment ring while advancing a double shield TBM comprises of filling the excavated annulus between the ground and the segmental lining by injecting pea gravel, followed with primary grouting to fill between the pea gravel some distance behind the excavated face. The methodology adopted for the Legacy Way project, however, did not follow this typical approach, instead, two component grouting of the annulus was carried out.Where the annulus is typically filled with pea gravel, support is provided to the segment ring very close to the end of the tail shield, whereas in the case of two component grout this is not practical as the risk of grouting in the tail shield is high. The staging of the two component grout injection, the grout early age strength properties become key issues in ensuring that the segment ring leaving the TBM tail shield is stable and can support the necessary external loads.Two-component grout is a grout with two components, cementitious grout (component A) and accelerator (component B), commonly adopted for earth pressure balance (EPB) TBM. The grout reaches its thixotropic state in a matter of seconds providing initial support for the segment rings. Manual injection of two component grout to fill the bore annulus was carried out in stages leaving a portion of the segment rings unsupported. Ring stability during TBM advance was provided by a combination of ram thrust and the segment circumferential joint shear connectors.This paper outlines the design considerations such as rock load derivation by probabilistic analysis carried out utilising the software JBlock, 3D finite element analyses using the software Strand7 for ring stability and the testing and back analysis of the shear connector load bearing behaviour.
