In many high temperature processes involving liquid melts the common practice is to solidify a fraction of the melt adjacent to the containment wall; a practice that can provide protection of the structural components of the process. The position, shape and transient behavior of these so called "skulls" and/or "ledges" are directly dependent on the thermal process conditions. This paper presents a model of a generic ledge process that can predict the steady shape of a ledge. Two numerical implementations are presented and compared: (1) based on a space grid of continuously deforming finite elements (2) based on a conjugate grid of fixed control volumes and deforming boundary elements.

Due to the increasing worldwide demand for raw materials and the resulting rise in commodity prices more expensive processing that is able to utilize complex ores becomes economically viable. This and increasing ecological awareness is why the interest in recycling and urban mining is steadily growing in Germany. In addition to that; landfills do also contain elements, which were not targeted over the period, when they were being accumulated. Examples are rare earths, indium, gallium, cadmium, arsenic, selenium and tellurium. Also copper, zinc and lead, the target components of ancient mining, can be obtained due to more effective processing and smelting technologies. Funding by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research, entitled "r³ ? Strategic Metals and Minerals ? Innovative Technologies for Resource Efficiency" also indicates the high level of strategic interest. It is against this background that the research project "Exploitation of the Raw Material Potential of Mining and Metallurgical Tips in Respect of Sustainability as Exemplified in the West Harz Mountains (ROBEHA)" has been implemented. A major concern of this project is the possible transfer of results to landfills in other areas. Therefore the development of an expert system based on the innovative processing methods and a method manual for urban mining are the central components of the investigation. This will provide an important contribution to the cost optimization of ensuing urban mining projects. To ensure the success of landfill mining projects it is necessary to record the composition and quality of the deposits accurately. Also the environmental impact caused by landfill mining and changes in the natural and cultural landscape will be considered in a multicriteria evaluation method. Depending on their origin the tips are divided into the categories mining, processing, and smelting. The content of a landfill and thus the economic potential in terms of urban mining is dependent on the type and composition of the deposits (host rock, gangue, and ore mineral), the available processing and smelting technology, and the target components at the time of mining. Zinc, for example, was not been processed until the 19th century, when it gained attention as being material of economic importance. After such knowledge about a landfill is obtained the decision for further investigations can be made. For a total of 158 landfills in the Harz Mountains, both the volume and the approximate contents of copper, zinc, and lead has been estimated for the different types of tips within past research projects. Based on the prices of the London Metal Exchange (LME) and a euro/dollar exchange rate of 0.76 (as of 03/05/2012) and assuming a minimum density of ? ? 1.5 t/m³ a average value of 1.6 billion ? in copper, zinc, and lead can be obtained. "In underground continuous mining operations, ventilation, water sprays, and machine-mounted flooded bed scrubbers are the primary means of controlling respirable dust exposures at the working face. Changes in mining arrangements, such as, face ventilation configuration, orientation of crosscuts mined in relation to the section ventilation, and equipment operator positioning, can impact the ability of dust controls to reduce occupational respirable dust exposures. This study reports and analyzes dust concentrations measured by the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research for both remote-controlled continuous mining machine operators and haulage operators at ten U.S. underground mines. Results of these respirable dust surveys show that continuous miner exposures varied little based on depth of cut, but are significantly affected by ventilation configuration. Haulage operators experienced elevated concentrations in blowing face ventilation. The type of cut influenced exposures, with elevated exposures observed for both continuous miner operators and haulage operators when working in crosscuts driven into, or counter to, the section airflow. Individual cuts are highlighted to demonstrate instances of minimal and excessive dust exposure attributable to particular mining configurations. These findings form the basis of recommendations for lowering face worker respirable dust exposures when performing a variety of continuous mining cuts.INTRODUCTION Underground continuous coal mining operations may encounter a wide range of conditions and arrangements during production and development activities. These activities typically produce respirable coal mine dust, putting operators of continuous mining machines and coal haulers at risk for elevated exposures. In order to comply with federal regulations limiting respirable dust exposures for the duration of a working shift, mine operators typically implement ventilation, water sprays, and machine-mounted flooded-bed dust collectors (scrubbers) to dilute and control mine dusts during coal cutting. Nevertheless, changes in operational conditions can limit the ability of these controls to effectively reduce dust exposures. Some examples of conditions that can change during the course of mining include face ventilation configuration, orientation of crosscuts mined in relation to the section ventilation, and operator positioning. Because these arrangements are largely under the control of mine operators, any insight into associated exposures may inform future plans and behaviors, reducing occupational exposures to respirable dust. The objective of this OMSHR study is to evaluate respirable dust exposures associated with a range of continuous mining arrangements by comparing occupational dust concentrations measured during a series of field surveys. These comparisons consider face ventilation configurations, depths of cut, and crosscut mining practices."

This paper focuses on the -1/2 mm cleaning at Elk Run Coal. The original circuitry incorporated desliming cyclones. Problems with slimes entrainment in the cyclone underflow (froth cell feed) resulted in poor froth cell selectivity. Laboratory test work led to the installation of high frequency desliming screens. Consequently, great improvement in cell performance was brought about by enhanced desliming with the ability to use split flotation. The modifications resulted in significant improvement in total plant performance and overall yield while maintaining clean coal quality.

"Eicosanoids and cytokines produced by alveolar macrophages (AM) are key mediators of pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis. In order to determine if eicosanoid production and cytokine production are altered in AM obtained from coal miners, we compared production of prostaglandin E2 (PCE2), thromboxane A2 (TXA2), leukotriene B4 (LTB4), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1B ), and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNfa.) by cultured AM from normal human subjects and coal miners. The recovery of AM from miners' lungs by bronchoalveolar lavage was significantly greater than that from control subjects. Mean eicosanoid and cytokine production by AM from active miners was also increased compared to AM from control subjects, but this increase was not statistically significant. AM from control subjects produced significantly more TXA2 and TNFa. when exposed to lipopolysaccharide than did AM from miners. The cyclooxygenase inhibitor suprofen reduced PGE1 and TXA1 production and TNF0t. release but had no effect on LTB4 production or IL-1B release by miners' AM. The lipoxygenase inhibitor nordihydroguaiaretic acid attenuated TNFa release, as well as that of LTB4, but had no effect on IL-1B release. Inhibition of thromboxane synthase by UK 38,485 also reduced TNFa release by active miners ' AM but had no effect on PGE1, LTB, production, or IL-1 f3 release. The results of these studies suggest that occupational inhalation of coal dust may increase total lung eicosanoid and cytokine levels and reduce the reactivity of AM to bacterial endotoxin. Furthermore, coal dust-induced changes in both eicosanoid and cytokine release may be subject to pharmacological modulation.The alveolar macrophage (AM) is a primary defensive cell in the lung and is one of the first cell types to encounter inhaled mineral dust. The response of the AM to invading foreign material is designed to enhance the defensive capacity of the lung. However, in the case of occupational inhalation of mineral dust particles, this response may be inappropriate, resulting not in the defense of the lung but in chronic inflammation and fibrosis (Rom et al., 1987; Takemura et al., 1989). The reaction of the AM to chronic mineral dust exposure may involve the exaggerated release of paracrine mediators of lung function, including eicosanoids (oxygenated derivatives of arachidonic acid) and peptides, including cytokines and growth factors (Sibille & Reynolds, 1990). Eicosanoids are involved in bronchial and vascular smooth muscle reactivity, vascular permeability, fibroblast growth, and the recruitment of additional immune cells to the alveolar space (Barnard et al., 1992; Elias et al., 1985; Scott et al., 1982). AM-derived cytokines such as interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 B) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TN Fa) have a variety of biological activities including the regulation of fibroblast growth and proliferation (Becker et al., 1989; Libby et al., 1989; Schmidt et al., 1984). Interestingly, in vitro studies with macrophages suggest that the production of cytokines may be linked to eicosanoid production, in particular that prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) may down-regulate IL-1 f3 and TN Foe production by the AM (Bonta et al., 1989; Kunkel et al., 1986; Monick et al., 1987)."

Rock damage around underground excavations has been an important hazard in mines and tunnels. Rock dilation generates buckling that needs to be contained before it causes damage to equipment or safety concerns to mine workers. In seismically active mines, rockburst occurrence has been widely recognized as one of the most important hazards in deep mines and tunnels. While there is a wide range of cases where rockburst hazard can be mitigated through dedicated excavation sequences, reentry procedures or exclusion zones, there are still many situations where large unexpected rockbursting may occur, relying only on rock support as the last mitigation measure to prevent production and safety losses. Considering the previous situations, surface support as mesh, plays a major role containing the failed/ejected rock and providing a safe working environment to the underground operations. While there have been considerable achievements in improving mesh resistance, with more than 26Kj/m2 of energy dissipation capacity, there is still a lack of research in the overlapping mechanism and load transfer between contiguous mesh elements. This paper presents the state of the art in static and dynamic analysis of welded and rolled mesh overlaps, based on experimentation carried on by Geobrugg in their Research Center, leaving clearly established that the difference in meshes is not only in levels of energy absorption, but also concluding that in the case of high resistance rolled meshes overlapping is not necessary and the transmission of stresses can be fully guaranteed by using suitable connecting elements. All these characteristics, supported by operational advantages as light weight and mechanized mesh installation, provides a considerable improvement in safety and productivity, improving the economic value of the project

Many cases of derailments, train accidents and traffic interruptions due to the slope failure and rockfall have been reported in the past on Konkan Railway trackline because of unstable rock slopes. The authorities installed stability enhancement measures such as wire netting, rock bolting and shotcreting which were found insufficient. The failed geotechnical measures prompted authorities to excavate the unstable slopes. Rock blasting is generally not preferred for the excavation of slopes along the transportation route. Stabilisation and widening of slopes by blasting need closure of the route for a considerable time. Discontinuing traffic on Konkan Railway route was undesirable as it connects two important port cities Mumbai and Mangalore. The paper presents an innovative directional controlled blasting (DCB) technique for excavating three unstable slopes (i.e. cuttings) in hilly terrain without disturbing the traffic. New empirical formulae for small geometry blasting to estimate burden and throw have been developed. A unique sequence of firing and excavation with powder factor varying between 0.04 and 0.39 kg/m3 irrespective of the actual free face was used for rock blasting. The process controlled the throw of blasted material over the track and resulted in a smooth and stable wall. The slope angle has been changed from 80 to 82° to 45–47° and probability of wedge, planar and toppling failures was eliminated. About 100 such accident-prone slopes (52 km cumulative length, 7% of total route) situated at discrete locations along Konkan Railway route were stabilised using the technique. No incident of rockfall and slope failures along these slopes has been observed after the stabilisation.

Selective flocculation was used to produce superclean zinc concentrate with minimized silica contamination. Research was carried out on a flotation concentrate from the Jersey Miniere Zinc Company (JMZ) in Gordonsville, Tennessee. The material was first dispersed with sodium silicate and then causticized tapioca starch was used to selectively flocculate the sphalerite, leaving the silica in suspension. This technique has been applied commercially to iron ore beneficiation but has never been used for processing zinc. The feed material assayed 0.45% Si02. Use of 0.56 kg/tonne (1.13 lb/st) of sodium silicate and 0.070 kg/tonne (0.141 lb/st) of causticized tapioca starch resulted in 98.2% zinc recovery in a purified zinc concentrate assaying 66.0% Zn and 0.24% silica. The present target level for silica contamination in JMZ zinc concentrates is 0.3% Si02. This work has shown that selective flocculation offers a potential method for cleaning flotation concentrates, particularly where low silica products are required.

Exploring new polymetallic processes, integrating primary and recycled materials, means utilising the uncharted areas within the Cu-Pb-Zn-Fe-Ca-Al-Mg-Si-O (major) – Cr-Na (slagging) – As-Sn-Sb- Bi-Ag-Au-Ni-Co (minor) slag-solids-metal-matte-speiss-sulfate system. This requires extensive integrated experimental and thermodynamic modelling study, which is underway at PyroSearch at the University of Queensland (UQ).

The improvement in the quality of cast iron by means of alloy additions has been a metallurgical accomplishment of recent years. Work in this field has shown that chromium is one of the most effective of such additions but, in general, the influence of chromium has been studied only in connection with other alloying additions, with irons other than foundry irons, or with relatively high percentages of chromium. The present study was initiated for the purpose of determining the influence of small additions of chromium (0.25 to 1.00 per cent) on the quality and resultant properties of cast irons of various foundry grades. The effect of small chromium additions on cast iron was investigated with particular reference to casting characteristics, hardness vs. section, strength, machinability, heat resistance and structure. Material Tested Three separate types of cast iron were investigated as to the effect of small chromium additions. The first series of these irons was prepared from remelted foundry cast iron at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories, and the other two series consisted of cupola melts made under usual operating conditions. The first series was made by melting 30-lb. charges of foundry scrap iron containing 2.86 per cent carbon, 2.72 silicon, 0.50 manganese, 0.062 sulfur and 0.794 phosphorus in a carbon resistance furnace. The chromium was added as high-carbon ferrochrome just before pouring. The irons were cast at approximately 1250" C. (2282" F.). The analysis and physical properties of these irons are given in Table 1, test 1. The second set of cast irons was made in a cupola in accordance with normal practice, the charge containing approximately 42 per cent steel scrap and the chromium additions being made to the ladle. Analysis and tests of these heats are shown in Table 1, test 2. A small amount of copper was present in heat C of this series. Further data on the effect of chromium on strength were obtained from a third series of 13 cupola heats containing from 0.06 to 0.50 per cent chromium and made without steel additions. A year ago a paper (1) was presented at the Annual Western Meeting of the Institute regarding silicosis in Ontario mines. It described the whole problem as we see it and discussed the means of prevention. The work and aims of the Technical Silicosis Research Committee of the Ontario Mining Association, and of the Committee's field engineer, were fully described also and it is suggested that reference be made to this paper in order to have a better understanding of the observations which are presented now. These observations enlarge upon parts of the dust control measures already discussed and tell of general progress in the past year. They concern fifty properties, the majority of the operating mines, which vary in size from the hopeful prospect to established producers yielding 11,000 tons of ore daily. Most of these are gold mines; a few copper-nickel. The ores range from heavy sulphides to siliceous materials and they are mined by many methods from varying types of deposits. The majority of the latter are steeply dipping and all are found in Precambrian host-rocks. Up to the present, die greatest depth to which mining has penetrated is 6,400 feet.

At the No. 4 Mine of Jim Walter Resources in Tuscaloosa County in the North Central part of the State of Alabama, the Mary Lee and Blue Creek coal beds lay 2000 feet below the surface. The quantity of methane gas stored within the coal bed reservoir at this depth and released during development mining necessitates that each coal producing section be ventilated using large air quantities approaching 100,000 cfm. In order to meet coal contractural commitments in the early stages of mine development by installing the necessary number of continuous mining machine units and to develop the mine to projected air shaft sites, high pressure, large volume mine ventilating fans were required. This presentation discusses the installation start-up and changeover procedures when two size GAF 31.5-28-1 TLT-Babcock 3500 Horsepower fans with adjustable pitch in flight blades were put on line while phasing out two Jeffrey Mining Machine Company 8HUA 117 Fans. A graph will be presented to depict the most economic diameter shaft size under 2000 feet of cover with different air quantity requirements.

The effect of grain refinement on the tensile and fatigue crack propagation behavior of sand cast magnesium alloy AM60B has been investigated in the present study, C2Cl6 in the amount of 0,3% was used to grain refine the melt, The fracture toughness tests were conducted in laboratory air at room temperature (25°C) using a sine-wave cyclic frequency of 20Hz and a load ratio of R = 0,1, The response in the Paris's regime and the critical stress range were determined, Preliminary findings have shown that C2Cl6 has a significant effect on both the tensile properties and fatigue crack propagation of the alloy tested, Grain refinement increased both the yield and ultimate tensile strength by more than 46%, and decreased the crack growth rate from 2,7 to 1,4 MPa Vm , However, the grain size seems to have a smaller effect on threshold stress intensity factor range. The fracture surfaces of specimens were examined optically and under the scanning electron microscope (SEM) to determine the relationship between grain size and fatigue properties.

In 2012 the Bureau of Meteorology, under the banner of the Water Accounting Standards Board, released the Australian Water Accounting Standard 1 (AWAS 1). This standard has been in development since 2007 with key milestones being the release of the Preliminary Australian Water Accounting Standard in 2009 and the exposure draft of the Australian Water Accounting Standard in 2010. Throughout this period, the Minerals Council of AustraliaÆs Water Accounting Framework has developed concurrently with the Australian standards and the standards have informed elements of the framework. However, the framework is not identical to the standard as the objectives between the two are different. The objective of the Water Accounting Framework is to create consistency in water reporting of the minerals industry and to assist companies reporting to corporate sustainability initiatives. The objective of AWAS 1 is to provide information to water management bodies to facilitate decisions about the allocation of water resources. Companies are to report on an annual basis - not only physical flows of water but contractual requirements to supply and obtain water - regardless of whether the transaction has been fulfilled in the reporting period. In contrast, the Water Accounting Framework only reports on flows that have physically happened. The paper will provide summary information on aspects of AWAS 1 that are most relevant to the minerals industry, show the alignment and differences between AWAS 1 and the Water Accounting Framework and explain how to obtain the information for the AWAS 1 reporting statements.CITATION:Danoucaras, A N and Woodley, A, 2013. "The various districts in the United States where complex lead-zinc ores occur are too well known to require description, there being hardly a mining State with any large amount of ores of either metal that is free from this problem. This paper briefly presents developments in the volatilization process, as applied to the treatment of such ores, since the data in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 211** were published. In that bulletin, among the many types of ore treated, examples are given of the treatment of lead-zinc ores by the chloride volatilization process for the separation of lead. An outline of the general process, with views of the rotary kiln, ore feeder, firing system (these three features resemble closely those of cement-kiln practice), dust chambers, and a Cottrell precipitator to remove the fume from the gas, are also shown in that bulletin, to which the reader is referred for the results obtained, and for practical details of operation. The small initial cost of a volatilization plant, and its adaptability for use in isolated districts were emphasized.In general, it was found that when an intensely oxidizing atmosphere was maintained in the furnace, a good lead-zinc separation could be made. Therefore, a heavy sulphide ore would have to be preroasted, and enough air would have to be admitted to obtain complete combustion of whatever fuel might be used.The work done by private companies and the bureau since the data for Bulletin 211 were obtained, indicates that the ores most immediately amenable to treatment by volatilization are of two types. The first is an oxidzed lead. silrer ore whose variable lime content makes it impractical to chloridize the ore for acidulated brine leaching, and whose base metal content makes treatment by cyanidattion unfeasible, The second type is the lead-zinc ore mentioned above, and is the one on which data are available for publication at present. This article Chows what ores of this latter type are amenable to treatment by volatilization, by giving briefly some of the more important physical and chemical properties an ore should preferably possess. Several examples are given from both laboratory experimental work, and from practice in the field, showing various phases of the volatilization process."

The evaluation of Abandoned Mined Lands can involve the investigation of very large areas of land. Often, the locations of critical areas or impending problems are unknown, and are not easily identified from the surface. Microseismic monitoring has been demonstrated to be effective in identifying potential instabilities and active movement in mines from distances of several kilometers. By placing sensors in proximity to, or in contact with, a high acoustic conductance layer close to the mined zone, large areas can be monitored for potential problems with a minimum of sensors and drillholes. As part of a U.S. Bureau of Mines contract, a prototype system was developed to identify and locate potential instability problems over wide areas of land. Once a problem area has been located, the system can be used to analyze the type of the problem, its size, relative degree of instability, and potential for damage. Continued monitoring after application of remedial measures can effectively determine the efficacy of those measures.

AMPS[. has completed a rationed grinding ball test in a 2.93 m x 2.93 m ball mill at Climax Molybdenum Company. The test consisted of purging the ball distribution formed by charging 100%, 76 mm carbon steel balls with a distribution formed by charging 50% 76 mm and 20% 51 mm alloy steel balls. The resulting change in ball surface area yielded improvements in both tons ground and fineness of grind with a significant reduction in total ball consumption. This paper summarizes preliminary studies leading to the plant test, grinding efficiency results, and future plans to optimize the ball charge.

BART Facilities Standards (BFS) Structural Criteria is a living document that governs planning, design, and construction of all BART projects. Since its development, the document undergoes incremental changes and updates to reflect policy changes, changes in local, State, or national design codes and guidelines, advancements in engineering and technology, or based on the performance of past built infrastructure. In 2020, the BFS-Structural Criteria underwent a comprehensive update and was released with BFS version 3.2. This paper summarizes the updates to the Tunnels and Underground Structures Section of the Structural Criteria, and provides insights to the basis and logic of the requirements.

Electrowinning is a significant step in metal extraction processes. Because the nature of electrowinning is to reduce metal from its oxidized state, substantial energy consumption accompanies it. Electrowinning processes of different metals have much in common—the deposition of the metal on the cathode and the counter-reaction on the anode. An advanced model was developed that can be applied to a variety of metal electrowinning processes. A model for specific metals can be readily obtained by modifying parameters such as potential, kinetics, and side reactions in the model. The model incorporates mass transfer, gas-liquid flow, electrochemistry, and deposition, making it a comprehensive electrowinning model. The model is applied to copper, nickel, and zinc and verified with the experimental results. In addition, the parameter settings and results of different metals were compared, showing that this model has great versatility and accuracy, thereby making it an efficient and effective research tool.
