The Jerritt Canyon Joint Venture project is located approximately 50 miles (80 km) north of Elko. Nevada, U.S.A. and produces between 250 and 300 thousand ounces of gold annually. The Joint Venture is 70% owned by Independence Mining Company and 30% owned by Meridian Gold Company. Independence Mining Company is the operator. The Jerrin Canyon Joint Venture started operations in 1980 mining a series of open pit mines. Since the early 1990's, the discovery of deeper ores has required the joint venture to develop and mine a significant portion of its annual production utilizing underground mining methods. Underground production started with the West Generator Mine in 1993 followed by the Murray Mine in late 1994. Presently, two additional underground projects are being developed. Underground mining at Jerritt Canyon is budgeted to produce 128 thousand ounces in 1997. This paper documents the major transition/redevelopment of the Jerritt Canyon mining methods.

The process of gold(I) adsorption on activated carbon (AC) from aqueous Na[Au(CN)2] and the state of the adsorbed gold cyanide complex on the adsorbent surface was investigated by photometry, XPS, XANES methods. By DFT method, quantum-chemical calculations were performed of the gold cyanide species on activated carbon surface. It was established that the binding of gold(I) with the surface of carbon involved several simultaneous processes governing the selective adsorption of gold(I) from the cyanide solutions.

Umicore and MWH jointly demonstrated that mechanical dewatering of goethite and neutralised tailings significantly increased the life of a 30 ha tailings pond and improved the operation of the pond. Umicore operates one of its zinc production plants in Balen, Belgium. As part of its production process, an excess of neutralised and goethite¬containing tailings is generated. These have historically been stored inside large lined ponds. As the storage area of the current goethite pond was nearing its capacity, Umicore studied the potential for an extension to the existing embankment. However, this extension would face intense regulatory scrutiny, because the environmental and safety impacts were considered important. Together with Umicore, MWH suggested and investigated an alternative treatment approach consisting of mechanical dewatering prior to storage. A feasibility study was prepared where wet storage was compared to dry storage. Differences in safety risks, environmental impacts and economic costs were outlined. The study demonstrated that the life of the tailings pond could be increased from 6 to 22 years, seriously reducing the environmental impacts and safety risks at no significantly higher cost than would have been incurred with the continued operation of the existing pond. The results of the study are presented in this paper.

This report describes the results of Bureau of Mines laboratory and preliminary field tests on a rock bolt of helical shape. The flexible construction allows the bolt to maintain a more stable load level than is possible with a straight bolt. Bolt load changes resulting from anchor slippage, blasting shock, or changes in mine geometry with mining advance are minimized. Preliminary field tests were performed at the Kaiser Steel York Canyon mine where the load changes of straight and helical bolts were measured using a vibrating-wire load gage. The field tests were performed to establish the viability of the concept of a helical bolt. The practical usefulness in terms of performance and economics remains to be shown. The change in bolt load for the flexible bolts was one-third that for the straight bolts. There were no malfunctions of the gage, and the bolts maintained a more uniform load than the straight bolts used as controls.

Positron Emission Particle Tracking (PEPT) and the Discrete Element Method (DEM) are used to investigate Power Draw in a laboratory scale tumbling mill. The mill is run dry in batch mode at different speeds using mono-size charge of glass beads, and is mounted along with a torque transducer to measure power. Particle tracking information from PEPT is used to reconstruct the motion of glass beads and infer the overall charge behavior, while DEM is employed to simulate particle motion and interaction, with collision mechanics calculated using the Hertz-Mindlin contact model. For PEPT and DEM data, the product of torque and average angular velocities in discrete cells are accumulated to obtain mill power. This method is found to be within statistical agreement with measured power for all tests. Spatial distributions plotted from this approach highlight the regions of the mill that draw the greatest power. A second technique to obtain Power Draw from DEM data which sums particle forces against the mill geometry is similarly found to accurately predict mill power with lower statistical error. Bell, Chairman of the Department of Metallurgy at the University of Strathclyde, Scotland, was there to lead the School, along with 12 local lecturers, who had gathered at the Hotel Devonshire at 07h30 for an Authors' Breakfast. Ever since the use of the cone penetration test (CPT) in geotechnical practice, attempts have been made to correlate CPT parameters with pile capacity components of unit end bearing (qb) and unit shaft resistance (fp), thus deriving multiple CPT-based pile design methods. These methods focus on "capacity" only without consideration to complete axial pile load-displacement (Q-w) response. Estimated capacities from these methods also exhibit considerable scatter without any consensus on their consistency. In addition, load-displacement curves obtained from axial load tests on highly expensive and extensively instrumented piles can exhibit different shapes. Nevertheless, a single value from the curve so obtained dictates the design capacity. Currently, there are at least 42 different criteria defining capacity with considerable variation in the values obtained thereof. The Randolph elastic solution, which provides a framework for analytical evaluation of pile load-displacement response, requires the profiles of soil stiffness. The fundamental soil stiffness defined by the small-strain shear modulus (Gmax) can be obtained from shear wave velocity (Vs) readings via seismic piezocone tests (SCPTu). The secant stiffness (G), which softens from Gmax corresponding to operational load levels, can be obtained by generating stiffness reduction curves from back analysis of load tests. Then, using appropriate G values, the Q-w curve can be defined for conditions similar to the database from the pseudo strain (w/d). Thus, a complete framework for optimal integration of SCPTu data, Randolph elastic solution and back-analysis of field operational stiffness can be established for complete axial pile foundation analysis.

THANKS to the excellent preliminary work of: the Division officers and the local committee the fall meeting of the Coal Division at Bluefields was a brilliant success. West Virginia was at its best with its beautiful mountains, good roads and foliage, just beginning to turn to autumn colors. The meeting began on time and was kept on time throughout. The papers were-well prepared and, being on subjects of live interest, provoked 'lively discussion. One factor in bringing this about was that they were not too numerous and that with one exception copies had been submitted in advance a sufficient time to permit of them having been studied. The Friday morning session was presided over by John .J. Lincoln of the Crozier Coal and Coke Co. and president of the Pocahontas Coal Operators Association. After brief announcements by Thomas H. Clagett, chairman of the local committee, regarding plans for the two day's involved, and by Howard N. Eavenson, chairman of the Division, the reading of papers was taken up.

Smelting of nickel-copper sulfide ores at Vale Inco’s Sudbury operations commenced in 1888 and the first converting plant went into operation in 1892. As the demand for nickel grew, the smelting operations expanded and by the 1960’s the Copper Cliff Smelter featured the longest converter aisle in the world with space for nineteen Peirce-Smith converters. During this long period, different converting techniques and vessels were employed. The evolution of converting is reviewed with special emphasis on the modifications made to the Peirce-Smith vessel to accommodate the metallurgical and process needs of the changing times.

The reasons for injection systems are presented, together with a description of the processes used. This includes a review of injection in crucibles, furnaces, launders, and into special purpose metal treatment boxes. The paper covers both the primary and secondary aluminium industries. This paper provides a review of these systems and presents some thoughts on the possible future application of injection to further improve productivity and reduce losses associated with current applications.The Needs for InjectionThere are many issues facing the process metallurgist in the aluminium industry which call for the application of injection technologies now and in the future. "In times when mines are emphasizing cost reductions, a properly rebuilt shall conveyance can be more cost-effective than building a new unit. Awareness of the safety aspects of conveyance design along with proper maintenance playa large part in reducing operating costs. A knowledgeable operator can maintain a high level of safety and significantly lengthen the service life of a conveyance. Such an operator is also in a better position to determine when a major overhaul is necessary.After the decision has been made to rebuild, operators must decide who will do the overhaul. Whether the work is to be done in-house or contracted out, the goal is to achieve a conveyance recertified to ""as new"" condition. By dealing with conveyance rebuilds as an engineered product, operators can be certain they are getting a top quality product for their money.This paper deals with the engineering aspects of conveyance rebuilds. Actual examples of typical problems are discussed and corrective action outlined. Design considerations such as proper material selection, component fatigue due to cyclic loading, effects of stress concentrations and corrosion are all part of the initial design considerations that must carryover into the rebuild process. All too often equipment overhauls are done by people who are not experienced in conveyance design.As a manufacturer of mining equipment, Wabi has gained expertise over the past 70 years. By sharing this knowledge the company hopes to create a safer work environment and help to reduce operating costs."

This work is both a revision and an elaboration of Bureau of Mines Bulletin 371, which was published in 1934 and included data available to October 1933. During the intervening years, a large number of new experimental, high-temperature, heat-content data have become available through continuous, systematic efforts of the Pacific Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines and the Laboratory for Inorganic and Physical Chemistry of the University of Groningen (Netherlands), coupled with various individual investigations at many institutions. In addition, calculations from spectroscopic and molecular constant data have been extended and applied to a wide variety of gaseous substances. This bulletin purposes to collect and correlate all available high-temperature heat-content and specific-heat data for inorganic sub-stances and to formulate tables and algebraic expressions for their representation. It is hoped in this manner to remove some of the tedium of thermodynamic calculations for industrial metallurgical research workers and engineers who often have available only an inadequate library in this field. It is expected also that this bulletin will have value to those teaching courses in metallurgical and chemical thermodynamics.

In this study, a hydrometallurgical treatment involving solvent extraction of zinc using D2EHPA (di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid) has been investigated to recover zinc from an industrial zinc leach residue. The residue was leached with sulfuric acid producing leach liquor which was subjected to solvent extraction for enrichment of zinc and removal of impurities. Operating variables for the zinc extraction process, such as pH of the mixed solution (0.5~5.0), concentration of D2EHPA (5%~40%, w/w), temperature (25~60°?C), A/O volumetric phase ratio (1/2~4/1), concentration of tri-butyl phosphate (TBP) as modifier (3%~7%, w/w), concentration of NaR2RSOR4R in aqueous phase (0.05M, 0.1M, 0.2M) were also studied. Practically all zinc was extracted from the aqueous solution at pH 2.5 with 20% w/w D2EHPA in kerosene. At this operating condition, zinc could be extracted at one theoretical stage at A/O phase ratio of 1/1, as calculated by the McCabe-Thiele method.

RME has a vision for a new mill operational paradigm made possible by RMEÆs fast, safe Mill Relining System. This vision can be moved forward into reality at any time with or without guidance from recent development in measurement and predictive modelling tools.Some new liner designs can degrade SAG mill performance because of mill volume loss, ball strike (rotational speed limitations) and other issues often brought about by optimising liners for life and without a backward glance at metallurgical consequences. Freshly relined mills can initially produce as little as 80 per cent of their maximum throughput, that maximum occurring toward the end of the linersÆ wear life. RMEÆs proposition is to design new liners for maximum commercial performance. This may mean more frequent changes of liners but with liners designed to yield optimum grinding, metallurgical and profitability performance. In other words, mill liner profiles and mill relining speed become key operational controls and not simply æmust doÆ maintenance functions. Taken to the extreme, liner profiles may prove capable of ætuningÆ a grinding plant for maximum profitability in any metal price environment. This paper provides an update regarding RMEÆs fast, safe Mill Relining System technologies and outlines RMEÆs vision of a æliner profile versus profitabilityÆ model as a function of metal price, developed intuitively or by using a combination of new measurement and modelling technologies. These new measurement and modelling tools provide the opportunity to predict the optimum commercial outcome, off-line in the virtual world, before committing to an expensive liner experiment.

With increase of cover depth, dynamic incidents, such as large gateroad convergences and coal bursts, are frequently encountered when mining deep longwall panels. It would be more adverse due to large inclination of the coal bed. Because of the shearer and armored face conveyor (AFC) sliding downhill, toppling of shields, disconnection of AFC to the stage loader are related to it. Tangshan coal mine is a typical deep, inclined coal mine situated in the east of China. The split-level longwall panel layout is being adopted for mitigating problems above, where tailgate entries of longwall panels are driven below gob edge and along the floor, while headgate entries are driven along the roof. Wire mesh and steel sets have been used empirically for support for tailgates for about a decade, which reduces the tunneling speed. In view of this fact, the paper serves to investigate the proper adjustment of the tailgate locations and to analyze the resulting stress and yield conditions according to support strategy. First, field measurements and observations were carried out. Stress data distributed within surrounding rock mass were obtained, especially within the roof since the roof consists of only a coal sheet with a thickness of 2–4 m. Roof pressure of the tailgate represents the pressure at the gob edge since it is below the gob edge. The convergence data were also collected. Numerical modelling using FLAC3D™ was conducted and validated by side abutment stress data. The double-yield constitutive model was used to simulate the gob. The finalized tailgate layout and design were determined through comparison of three scenarios. The research in this paper can help engineers choose the proper tailgate layout and support strategies for coal mines that are going to adopt a split-level longwall panel layout for mining deep, inclined longwall panels.

For more than five years, GAUSTEC, along with large Mineral Industry companies, has sought solutions to concentrate flotation tailings and fines by using High Intensity Magnetic Separators (WHIMS). In 2014, GAUSTEC launches the world's largest magnetic separator, the GHX 1400, with capacity up to 1400t/h. By 2015, it launches NoBLOCK® technology, a protection for magnetic separators against clogging. Finally in 2017, it launches two technologies that, together with the previous two, revolutionize the market for magnetic separation, the BigFLUX® Matrix and SuperWHIMS® technology. This article aims to show all these technologies together and to show the efficiency of the same ones already employed in mining companies.

Since 1925, xanthates have been widely used in sulfide flotation due to their low cost, ease of manufacture, and ability to float most value species. However, the industry's increasing need for safer and more selective alternatives, driven by low head grades, poor-quality, difficult-to-process ore with complex mineralogy, and stricter environmental regulations, has led to the development of Solvay's AERO® XR series of collectors. These custom-formulated products are based on greener chemistries and offer metallurgical benefits that are similar to or better than those of xanthates, without the safety concerns. Developed through Solvay's Flotation Matrix (FM) 100 approach, the XR series collectors are suitable for a wide range of applications, including the processing of Cu, Zn, and Cu-Ni, as well as the flotation of precious metals. This paper will highlight the differences between xanthates and XR series collectors, and present case studies of their successful commercial application at various global operations.

This publication covers the work of the Division of Coal Mine Inspection, Bureau of Mines, as performed under provisions of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act. It presents background information and data since 1952 when the Act became effective and includes up-to-date statistics for the calendar year 1962. During that year, approximately 9,704 coal mines were active in the United States, and the Bureau made 12,810 regular inspections. BACKGROUND The Federal coal-mine inspection program was established to carry out the provisions in Public Law 49, 77th Congress, (H. R. 2082) approved May 7, 1941. This act has since been amended as Title I, Advisory Powers Relating to Health and Safety Conditions in Mines, under Public Law 552, 82d Congress, approved July 16, 1952, which also included Title 11, Prevention of Major Disasters in Mines. Public Law 552 is known as the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act.

"To optimize gold recovery in complex leach-to-electrowinning processes, Gekko Systems developed the Gekko resin exchange column (G-REX) as an intermediate step, using a highly gold-selective resin to isolate contaminant metals. The AuRIX®100 resin produced by Purolite is licensed exclusively to Gekko, with the G-REX column designed specifically for this resin. Operational experience has been gained at the Castlemaine Goldfields Ballarat gold mine. In near-continuous operation since 2008, the Ballarat plant treats unclarified concentrate leach solution. The extension of this technology to higher throughputs and more complex chemistry is discussed.RÉSUMÉ Afin d’optimiser la récupération de l’or dans des procédés complexes impliquant la lixiviation suivie de l’extraction électrolytique, Gekko Systems a développé la colonne Gekko de résines échangeuses d’ions (G-REX) comme étape intermédiaire, à l’aide d’une résine hautement sélective pour la récupération de l’or qui permet d’isoler les métaux contaminants. The resin beads are off-white in colour and spherical, with a nominal size of 100% +600 µm. This resin is highly selective for gold and silver over many metals, by way of extracting precious metal–cyanide complexes from leach solutions with a pH of less than 11.5. The higher end of the pH scale produces the best selectivity according to the order of preference: Au > Ag > Hg > Zn > Ni > Cu > Co > Fe. Purolite produces the resin and Gekko Systems maintains licensing of AuRIX100 resin for use in its G-REX column, as part of its unique suite of gravity gold–handling equipment.Significant cost savings over carbon-in-solution (CIS) systems are realized with AURIX100 resin: approximately 4–12% in capital savings and 27–40% in operating costs (Virnig, Mackenzie, Katsikaros, & Gray, 2004). Additionally, AuRIX100 resin is not susceptible to fouling; that is, the resin does not load with inorganic salts or organic compounds that would affect the loading and extraction of precious metals. To counter any potential for fouling by inorganic salts, a dilute acid wash is periodically conducted in service on the resin to unblock resin pores."

To protect the water supply for the Metropolitan Chicago area, the Illinois legislature, in 1889, created the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago. To insure the quality of the water supply, the Sanitary District collected and diverted the wastes of 750,000 people away from Lake Michigan. Today, the Sanitary District collects and treats the wastes from a domestic population of 5 ¼ million people and an industrial waste load equivalent to 4 ¼ million people. The District serves Chicago and 120 other cities and suburbs in an 858 square mile area. An average of 1300 million gallons of wastewater is treated each day, producing as a by- product about 700 dry tons of solids which contains more than $10,000 worth of plant nutrients when equated to the value of commercial fertilizer purchased in the retail market. The Sanitary District considered several alternatives to past methods for disposing of these solids, and chose land application as a technique to utilize the solids produced by the wastewater treatment process in a beneficial manner.
