Computer based dispatching in open pit truck haulage operations yields many benefits of current interest to mine management. The key tangible benefit is a substantial productivity increase with a given fleet of equipment or, alternately, a significant reduction in equipment required to meet production quotas. Other tangible benefits, depending on the operation, include minimizing rehandle, meeting several blending constraints simultaneously and ensuring a target plant feed rate. Intangible benefits include production forecasting, performance comparisons of trucks or shovels of different manufacture and extensive on-line report generation. Recent advances in mini and micro computer hardware and software and solid state electronics permit design and implementation of system features not feasible even a few years ago. Here we discuss many of these recent developments with emphasis on system aspects and dispatching algorithms.

Cold-wire tandem submerged arc welding (CWTSAW) has recently been developed as a novel welding technique to replace the conventional tandem submerged arc welding (TSAW) process and improve the productivity of pipeline manufacturing. The process involves two electrodes with arcs and one electrically cold electrode. Since heat-input of the welding process is a key factor affecting the properties of the weld metal (WM) and the heat-affected zone (HAZ), and the additional cold-wire affects the heat introduced to the weldment, it is of interest to investigate property and geometry changes in the WM and HAZ when a cold-wire is added to the welding process. In the current research, the CWTSAW process is investigated and optimized by correlating the main welding parameters with the micro-hardness of the WM and HAZ and the geometry of the weld, i.e., the bead width (BW), penetration depth (PD), reinforcement area (RA) and coarse grained heat-affected zone (CGHAZ) area. Three statistical and mathematical methods are employed to optimize the CWTSAW process in terms of the mechanical properties and WM and HAZ geometry of a typical microalloyed steel used for pipeline manufacturing.

TRANSPORTATION is one of the most important problems of the mine operator and the possibilities of cost reduction in this field should not be overlooked. In the railroad industry, cars and locomotives have been improved greatly, and the progress there made is well worthy of study by the mine operator looking for maximum efficiency in every branch of his activities. One of the outstanding developments in the construction of railroad equipment in recent years has been the wide-spread adoption of large one-piece steel castings for the framework of locomotives, passenger and freight cars. Some of the advantages and applications of this type of construction will be outlined in this paper, with particular thought of the needs of the mining industry. The inherent qualities of cast steel: homogeneity, unrestricted size and shape, high tensile strength, flexibility of metal distribution, resistance to corrosion, and gracefulness of outline, make it the most versatile member of the ferrous group. Not only is it a strength-giving element, but it is corrosion resistant, a combination that makes for large economies in equipment maintenance. Flexibility of metal distribution allows the integral foundation to be in the shape best suited for the purpose. These cast structures are really assembled in the mold in liquid form and the metal can be placed in the right pro¬portion exactly where it is needed, thus securing weight economy and uniformity of fibre stress. Such a process permits the incorporation, with ease, of necessary brackets, utilizing them to provide not only greater strength for the derail part itself, but often to add to the value of the entire unit. Laps, seams, and joints, which are necessary in all fabricated forms, are eliminated.

"Test work on biooxidation pretreatment of low-grade refractory gold ores has been ongoing at Newmont Gold Company since 1988, including laboratory testing and pilot biooxidation heaps (360 to 23,000 tonne). Metallurgical results of the biooxidation process utilizing Thiobacillus ferrooxidans (T. ferrooxiddans) have culminated in the design, construction, and operation of a biooxidation demonstration facility. The facility has processed 708,000 tonnes of refractory ore, using a batched process with separate pads for biooxidation and ammonium thiosulfate gold extraction. Siliceous sulfidic refractory (SSR) and carbonaceous sulfidic refractory (CSR) ores are treated separately during biooxidation pretreatment unit operation. Following biooxidation, the ores are neutralization with lime and placed on oxide leach pads or stacked on the ammonium thiosulfate leach pad. Gold is leached with either cyanide for SSR ores or ammonium thiosulfate for preg-robbing CSR ores.This paper will only address the biooxidation pretreatment process of the SSR and CSR ores.AcknowledgmentsThe authors appreciate the cooperation and approval of Newmont Gold Company Carlin Operations management for its support and permission to publish this paper. On the basis of experiments con- ducted on quartz using a bubble pick-up method, it was shown in an earlier paper1 that this mineral will preferentially adsorb hydrogen, calcium, or sodium ions, depending on the relative concentrations of those ions in the solution in which the quartz is immersed. For quartz particles ranging in size from 0.2 to 1 mm, it was demonstrated that the concentration of calcium in solution (assumed present as ions) necessary to completely activate quartz for flotation is given by the expression: In this expression, ionic concentrations are in mols per liter. It was further shown that the pick-up method is apparently more sensitive to changes in reagent concentration than the standard captive-bubble method, and that induction times are apparently much reduced. Since completing these earlier tests, a new type of cell has been constructed; this is shown in Fig 1 and 2. In Fig 1, A is a ground joint, B is a ceutral tube reaching to within a few millimeters of the bottom of the cell, and C is a stopper which may be removed for re- agent addition, and serves the further purpose of excluding carbon dioxide from the air during the test. The entire cell is constructed of Pyrex glass, and does not give the trouble experienced with the earlier cell, in which activating ions were released from the glass at high pH values. BERYLLIUM is demanding more of the limelight, and the output of beryllium copper (containing 2% to~ 3 per cent of beryllium) seems to have grown 60 per cent above that of 1936, which was double that of 1935. There is increasing interest in beryllium-aluminum alloys and small quantities are being marketed at $50 per lb. for the contained beryllium. Other alloys also can be produced. Further price decreases for beryllium copper (now $23 per lb. for the contained beryllium) seem , possible and desirable. No difficulty has been experienced in obtaining beryl and a 'reserve stock has been built up. One supplier heretofore found reliable has offered to furnish 200 tons per month. "This talk is concentrated on the topics of compound film formation on the substrate electrode by interdiffusion of substrate element and electrochemically deposited species and/or by direct electrochemical implantation of the component element of the film into the substrate. As a typical example, electrochemical implantation of nitrogen atom into Ti metal to form TiN surface film is described. Another example is the formation of various kinds of intermetallic compound films including Ni2Y, Ni2Dy and Pd3 Y by the electrochemical implantation of lanthanoid elements into transition metal electrodes. By combining these two methods, Sm-Fe-N ternary material film also could be formed. The U.S. Bureau of Mines performed engineering and economic analyses on 130 domestic phosphate mines and deposits, all containing demonstrated resources, of which 73 are in the Southeastern states of Florida and North Carolina, to determine the domestic availability of phosphate rock. Of the total domestic resources studied (6.4 billion tons of recoverable rock) over 60 percent is found in these two Southeastern states. At an estimated cost of $30 per ton, in January 1981 dollars, approximately 1 billion tons of rock is potentially recoverable from Southeastern deposits, increasing to 3 billion tons at $45. In addition, there is nearly 6 billion tons of recoverable rock at the inferred level (some presently unmineable) in Florida and Georgia.

THIS paper is entitled "Some" problems, rather than "The" problems, met in selling coal, since the problems to be met in selling any commodity have to deal with an infinite number of circumstances and conditions. These are believed to be more varied in the case of coal than probably any other commodity. This is due, perhaps, to the fact that coal has been one of the basic materials in the guiding of industrial and national achievement for the past two hundred years. During this time its use has developed from a most haphazard one to uses involving all modern scientific methods, which, rather than simplifying matters as regards the marketing of coal, have added many fresh problems, and these vary according to the particular market served. Since the concern of this paper is primarily the selling of Nova Scotia coal, it is proposed to deal chiefly with some of the specific conditions met in the markets presently served by this coal. For the purpose of discussion, these markets may be considered as divided into three main groups, namely, the Maritime market, the Quebec market, and the Ontario market. THE MARITIME MARKET First of all, let us consider the Maritime market. This is a market which has been regularly served by Nova Scotia coal since coal mining became the first industry in Cape Breton, slightly over one hundred years ago. Conditions as applying to the use of coal have naturally tended to adjust themselves to the characteristics of the coal most readily available, and, therefore, marketing problems are fewer in the Maritimes than in districts where many coals of varied characteristics are offered. Up to recent years, the problems involved were chiefly those of providing satisfactory service insofar as de-liveries were concerned. However, with the speeding-up of manufacturing processes and the necessity of reducing costs to a minimum, users of coal have become interested in obtaining coal that will give the most economical service. It is, therefore, now of importance that the salesman should have full knowledge of the particular conditions applicable to each customer's use in order to deal to the best advantage.

Teck Cominco Metals Ltd. operates an integrated zinc-lead smelter at Trail, British Columbia, Canada. The zinc circuit comprises three parallel operations: conventional fluid-bed roasting, direct zinc pressure leaching of concentrates and atmospheric leaching of zinc oxide fume recycled from the lead smelter. The products from these three areas are combined in the main leaching plant where they undergo iron purification. Unlike most leaching circuits, the leach process in Trail begins with an acid leach and is followed by a neutral leach. An evaluation was undertaken to determine if the process at Trail could be improved by converting to the conventional neutral leaching process with a subsequent acid leach of the residues. This paper explores the results of these tests and the implications for Trail Operations.

It is difficult to remove arsenic and bismuth from antimony in the process of crude electro refining. The electro refining of antimony has been studied using ammonium fluoride-antimony sulphate electrolyte system. The Influence of temperature, current density and additives on arsenic and bismuth removal from crude antimony has been investigated in this paper. Optimum process parameters, namely, temperature of 25?, current density of 400A/m2, distance between anode and cathode of 50mm, electrolytic period of 24 hours, oxalic acid dosage of 10g/L and complexon III dosage of 0.2 g/L have been ascertained.

"For pile driving simulation the model used must be accurate for the entire process, i.e. from the start of pile driving until the pile has reached its target depth. Of the various model components (hammer, pile and soil), the soil is the most difficult to characterize accurately. This is well known, but the aspect that is not as well understood (and therefore commonly misapplied) is the fact that the soil properties and thus the soil parameters do not remain constant during the pile driving process. Furthermore, this phenomenon of soil fatigue, mainly for skin friction, as a continual change of soil resistance during pile installation, is not implemented into all commonly applied pile driving simulation software and could therefore not be taken into consideration. In this paper the effect of soil fatigue will be described by numerous research results, showing that this effect will occur regardless. Different methods to consider the change of soil resistance during pile installation will be presented, some applying soil fatigue while others merely reduce soil resistances. Using currently available wave equation software that can take soil fatigue into consideration, the importance of doing so will be shown on the basis of the back calculation of a monopile installed offshore in Germany.THEORY BEHIND SOIL FATIGUESkin friction and toe resistanceTo simulate pile installation as accurately as possible, detailed geotechnical knowledge about the mechanical behavior of the soil surrounding the pile is necessary during each step of the installation process. Therefore, to ensure ""geo-mechanical correctness"" of a pile driving simulation, the shaft friction and the toe resistance have to be recalculated at each penetration level. For the skin friction parameters this is especially important since they change significantly during pile installation because of soil fatigue. Depending on the pile and soil type, the toe resistance can experience changes as well due to soil fatigue during to pile driving. However, in this paper the toe resistance values were kept constant over the entire penetration depth.In general, the unit skin friction can be derived from measured values (CPT, qs) or calculated as a function of the horizontal effective stresses dh acting perpendicular to the pile wall of a vertically driven pile. The horizontal stresses can then be converted into the unit skin friction qs using the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion:"

Thick coal seams are common in the Western United States, Many seams are over 50 it thick (some are over 200 ft thick) and are too deep to extract using surface methods. Currently, such deposits are developed using standard "eastern" mining methods which only extract a few feet of total seam thickness, often rendering the remaining coal unminable with current technology. Novel methods that increase thick-seam recovery have been developed and are currently being used in Europe. These methods--high-face single-pass and multislice longwall, longwall caving, and hydraulic mining--have great potential for use in the United States. Successful use of these methods is an objective of the Bureau of Mines. Their use requires, among other things, a full evaluation of geologic features common to thick coals. The objective of this report is to present and summarize those features that will affect the introduction of the methods into thick-seam mines in the Western United States. The geologic elements delineated are three-dimensional configuration of the seam, cleat development, joints and fractures, roof and floor lithology, and faulting.

Laboratory investigations on the possibility for magnetic separation of sulphide minerals are reported. A survey of several sulphide ores and flotation concentrates shows that magnetic separation in most cases is not a suitable primary method of beneficiation. However encouraging results have been obtained in concentrate purification. At the Boliden complex sulphide ore concentrator in Garpenberg a Allis-SALA MK III carousel High Gradient Magnetic Separator (HGMS) is used together with a small flotation circuit to recover sphalerite lost to the galena concentrate in lead flotation. The result after four years of refining the HGMS process, show increasing zinc recovery and enhanced quality of the lead concentrate.

"The primary objective of this paper is to demonstrate a different approach to predicting and verifying mechanical sampling system precision. Early in the year 2011 an experiment was conducted to evaluate the sampling precision being obtained by a three-stage falling-stream mechanical sampling system for coal owned and operated by Peabody Energy. This system collects samples from lots averaging approximately 14000 t being loaded onto rail cars at a flow rate averaging about 9000 t/h. In phase 1 of the experiment, a total of 60 increments were collected in a two day period at preassigned intervals using a cross-belt sampler located on a conveyor belt feeding a silo upstream of the sampling system under evaluation. Coal variability parameters were calculated from the resulting laboratory analysis data using the gauge-invariant fractal model developed by the author.Estimates of precision of the three-stage system as a function of the number of increments were calculated using the variability parameters determined in phase 1. In phase 2 of the experiment, duplicate samples of 30 lots of coal were taken by the three-stage sampling system, enabling calculations of the precision being achieved by the system. Phase 2 precision estimates are in reasonable agreement with those of phase 1. Conclusions drawn from the experiment include the following: Experimental variograms or the equivalent correlograms are essential in understanding sampling issues and for designing a sampling system to meet specific precision requirements. Consensus coal sampling standards provided by ISO and ASTM may be improved by treating all stages of a mechanical sampling system as æsamplingÆ rather than considering downstream sampling stages as æsample preparationÆ, to be treated in a separate part of the document. The coal industry would profit from use of methodology for routinely monitoring the overall measurement precision and the precision of the individual components of measurement: sampling, sample preparation and laboratory testing. This would not only give necessary credence to the measurement results but would also no doubt, lead to more efficient sampling system designs.CITATION:Rose, C D, 2012. (1) The Castleman Basin was investigated by diamond drilling, engineering examination, and geologic study. Agreements permitting investigation of about 14,700 acres of land were entered into with 79 landowners. Eleven beds of coal between the horizons of the Harlem and Mercer beds were penetrated in drilling. These beds from top downward are: Harlem, Upper Bakerstown, Lower Bakerstown, Brush Creek, Upper Freeport Rider, Upper Freeport, Upper Kittanning, Middle Kittanning, Lower Kittanning, Mount Savage, and Mercer. The characteristics of air bubbles and gas dispersion in KYF flotation cell are studied using the method of the point conductivity probe and CFD simulation. With increasing of speed, the velocities of air bubbles increase slowly and the distribution of diameters exhibits little change. With increasing of aeration rate, the gas holdup is increased. However, the velocities and diameters of bubbles have no great change. The CFD predictions on gas holdup have good agreement with the experiment results. The gas holdup distribution in the center section is revealed. The gas dispersion in the middle and upper part of flotation cell is uniform. It would be helpful for bubbles and solid particles collision. The gas holdup of the lower part of flotation cell is scarce, and it agrees with the observation in experiment. The gas would accumulate at the suction side of impeller blades, and it would decrease the power consumption. The rotating speed and aeration rate have great effect on gas dispersion. With increasing of aeration rate, the gas holdup of flotation cell will increase. The increasing of speed would improve gas dispersion. The results are expected to help to optimize the performances of KYF flotation cell.

This new alliance will allow the three companies to combine research and development activities with their respective expertise in ENERGIRON DR technology, Blast Furnace technology and Syngas (by-pro gas and coal gasification) technology, with the ultimate objective to develop breakthrough iron making technologies and create such EPC projects. This paper introduces the concepts and the features of our breakthrough technologies of combining of ENERGIRON DR technology, Blast Furnace technology and Syngas technology.

"Brattice cloth is an important material in coal-mine ventilation practically all coal mines use some brattice cloth, gassy mines a large amount. It is employed in three ways:Crosscut brattices.Curtains in haulageways.Line brattices in gassy mines.In each case brattice cloth is used to deflect part or all of a split of the mine ventilating current into or toward the face of a working place. As a general rule, its use in a particular location is temporary.A crosscut brattice should be employed only until a permanent stopping has been erected. Such a brattice is subject to little wear when in actual service, the chief damage occurring when it is taken down and put up again.When used for curtains on haulageways or haulage crosscuts to deflect the air current up into rooms or headings, the wear on brattice cloth is considerable, as mine cars, machines, and personnel constantly pass under the curtains which last only a few days or a few weeks in an active part of the mine. For such purposes tightly woven smooth cloth is desirable, so that it will not be easily torn. Curtains should not be used back from the working places, as they sometimes are, to deflect the main. split, as the leakage of air is too great. Doors should be used in such places."

With the current trends of increasing costs and decreasing head grades the mineral industry is no longer operating in very high profit areas and has been forced to pay greater attention to the application of modern technology. Although here are many technological advances to the credit of the industry in recent years there are still many processes being operated in the traditional manner and still many areas awaiting the application of methods which have been proven in other industries. Compared with the chemical industry the mineral industry is seriously ageing in the general areas of process analysis and process control, more so than can be justified by the complications arising from having to deal with particulate systems with properties far different from ideal, or even non-ideal, liquid systems. One area in which there has been a remarkable lack of application in the Mineral industry is that of analog computation and the authors feel that there is considerable scope for the use of the analog computer in studying mineral industry processes. The paper outlines the basic principles and features of the analog computer and describes its role as a simulation tool in some engineering and mineral processing systems.
