High Pressure Water Jet Assisted Tunneling The high pressure water jet assisted tunneling project was conducted in a granite quarry near Skykomish, Washington, approximately 90 miles east of Seattle. A 7-ft diam tunnel boring machine was modified and equipped with high pressure water jets. The concept that tunneling rates can be improved by using high pressure water jets was validated, with an average increased advance rate of 50% to 60%. For some tests, the advance rate was more than doubled. A comprehensive economic analysis has shown that very significant savings are possible. At a 50% increase in advance rate, cost savings of 14% and 24% were projected for 10-ft and 20-ft diam tunnels respectively. These benefits were seen to be relatively insensitive to water jet equipment costs.

This paper gives results of laboratory and pilot - plant investigations of concentration of western manganese ores during the Bureau of mines manganese-development program initiated in December 1940. The data summarize results obtained from laboratory investigation of concentration of ores from three properties in southeastern Arizona . The high - grade Gray - claims lot B ore , a product of hand sorting , is marketable directly or after sintering treatment . Intermediate - grade lot A selectively mined ore would be marketable after sintering as a plus 35 percent manganese produce , but gravity concentration methods were employed effectively to produce high - grade manganese concentrates with over 80 percent recoveries . Complex association of fine - grained manganese oxides , calcite , and fluorite in a siliceous ground mass limited the recovery of high-grade manganese concentrates obtainable from the low-grade Pyrolusite -group ore . A recovery of 63.7 percent of the manganese was made by flotation in a concentrate that sintered to plus 48 percent manganese grade . The low-grade Davis ore contains iron and manganese oxides too intimately associated to permit production of marketable manganese products . However , good rejection of calcite gangue was obtained by flotation , and the enriched manganese - iron product might have value as a spiegeleisen ore .

Addressing deficiencies and defects that occur during construction projects is costly and time consuming. The manual quality assurance programs currently used in the industry have certain limitations, including human error and lack of consistency. Hence, there is a need for integrated electronic models that employ new technologies and methods. This research introduces an integrated construction quality control system that has the potential to improve quality management processes in the construction field for piping construction, which is a complex process often requiring rework. The proposed integrated system relies on data collected from construction sites using photogrammetry and laser scanning, which is then used to compare actual work performed to that designed. The proposed system aims to improve the promptness and accuracy of quality assurance processes, in particular dimension measurements, by avoiding human error and integrating defect detection and quality management. The use of this system has highlighted some of the limitations during data fusion and acquisition process, which are highlighted in this paper. These aspects must be considered to increase the reliability of the acquired information.

Two growing problems confront the preparation engineer—still further restrictions on stream pollution and a greater proportion of fine coal as more and more continuous miners come into use. The de-watering screens, centrifuges, and settling ponds that sufficed a few years ago must often be supplemented by more effective equipment, and in some instances the finest solids are now being recovered by vacuum filtration, once considered too costly in many coal washeries. Unfortunately not all slurries can be readily filtered. Some are virtually unfilter-able, and others do not permit the high cake rates needed to hold costs within reason. Often, however, these difficult slurries can be rendered filterable by flocculation. Starch and lime have long increased settling rate in thickeners and can also aid filtration. More recently there have been other flocculants, primarily synthetic polymers or gums. Reports of their great effectiveness prompted the U. S. Bureau of Mines to test their use in filtration as part of its program on recovering and cleaning fine coal. The object of the present work was to compare some of the newer flocculants with starch and lime and to test the reaction of different types of slurries to flocculation. Three natural slurries, three synthetic coal-clay mixtures, and five flocculants were tested, all with a laboratory filter leaf. Slurries and Flocculants Tested: First of the slurries was the thickener feed from the washed coal section of the Michel colliery of Crow's Nest Pass Co. Ltd., Michel, B.C. As shown by the screen and ash analyses in Table I, practically all this slurry was finer than 28 mesh, and about half the solids were finer than 200. Substantially all material coarser than 200 mesh was clean coal, but the ash content of 20.7 pct in the finest size indicates a moderate amount of impurity. This coal is medium-volatile bituminous in rank. Slurry was also obtained from the Black Diamond washery of Palmer Coking Coal Co., King County, Wash. This underflow of a 1/2-mm vibrating slurry screen is a waste product discharged to a settling pond. As shown by the data in Table I it contained about 20 pct material finer than 200 mesh, which analyzed 77.5 pct ash, indicating a high proportion of clay. The coarser sizes were also high in ash content because of the presence of bone and shale. Black Diamond coal is on the dividing line between bituminous and subbituminous rank. The third slurry, from the washery of Roslyn-Cascade Coal Co. in Kittitas County, Wash., was the underflow of a battery of 8-in. cyclones that is wasted with the coarser refuse from the plant. In both size and ash content this slurry was similar to the Black Diamond, but since it was a cyclone-underflow product, the fraction finer than 200 mesh undoubtedly contained a much smaller proportion of finely divided clay than was present in the Black Diamond slurry. The Roslyn-Cascade coal is high-volatile A bituminous in rank. Initially the slurry samples were stored in the laboratory at a concentration of 40 pct solids. A progressive change in filtration and flocculation characteristics during storage was noted, however, presumably because of progressive disintegration of the clay. After careful testing demonstrated that the slurry solids could be dried and then repulped without changing the original filtration characteristics, this procedure was adopted. The flocculants used were Separan 2610, Kylo 27, Jaguar MD-A, Idaho potato starch, and lime. The lime was used as a slurry, the Separan 2610 as a 0.10 pct aqueous solution, and the other flocculants as 0.50 pct aqueous solutions. The starch was causti-cized with sodium hydroxide before use. As some of the flocculants are reported to deteriorate on storage, new batches of flocculants were prepared every two days. Test Procedure: Fig. 1 diagrams the filter leaf apparatus employed. This consists of a test leaf having an effective area of 0.10 sq ft., a 60°, 8 1/2-in. diam cone to hold the slurry sample, a variable-speed electric stirrer, vacuum gage, bleed line for controlling vacuum, filtrate flask, moisture trap, and vacuum pump. Two filter cloths were selected—Saran SA 603, a monofilament, coarse-weave cloth, and polyethylene PO-801 HF, a monofilament, fine-weave cloth. The Saran was selected to provide maximum cake rate without regard to clarity of filtrate and the polyethylene to provide the best quality of filtrate without regard to cake rate. THE problem of the influence of hot surfaces upon gaseous combustion is one which, from a purely scientific stand-point, has engaged, for many years past, the attention of Prof. William A. Bone, of Leeds University and the Imperial College, London; and as his recent work has been the direct outcome of earlier scientific investigation, it will be appropriate, by way of introduction, to review briefly the present position of science with respect to this important subject, as stated by Professor Bone. One may perhaps best arrive at an understanding of the term " ?flameless " or " surface " combustion by considering certain facts which differentiate it from the more familiar processes of combustion as they occur in ordinary flames. All hot surfaces have an accelerating influence upon chemical changes in gaseous systems. If, at any temperature, a gaseous system, A, tends to pass over into another system, B, contact with a solid at the same temperature will accelerate the process. To take a very simple example, if a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen in their combining proportions (electrolytic gas) were maintained in an inclosure with smooth glass walls at a temperature of, say, 450° C., there would certainly be a tendency to form steam, but the rate of change would be negligibly small. If, however, there were brought into the system some porous solid material at the same temperature, so that a large surface was exposed to the gases, the rate of change would at once be rapidly accelerated in the layer of gas immediately in contact with the hot surface. Steam, the product, would diffuse outward from the surface, and the supplies of hydrogen and oxygen at the surface would be renewed by diffusion inward. Thus combustion would proceed heterogene-

"The concentrator at Brenda Mines Ltd. treats a copper - molybdenum porphyry ore with current head grades of 0.185% Cu and 0.036% Mo. The consistently low head grades provided the driving force to explore methods of improving plant productivity. Computer based process control was recognized as one means of addressing this objective. Over the period from 1974 to 1982 a control system evolved which now extends to every area of the mill. Control strategies are built on elements of classical, modern and rudimentary expert control. In addition, the control system has often served as a catalyst for other technological developments. The economic returns associated with the system are very significant and it has played an important role in the mine's survival in times of poor metal markets. This paper presents an overview of the computer control system at Brenda.PreambleOne can scarcely avoid picking up a trade magazine or newspaper today without seeing some reference to technology and its potential impact on North American business. _A recurring theme is the need to apply technology to raise our standard of plant automation in the manufacturing and process industries. The general thesis of these articles has been concisely captured in the mutually exclusive set:AUTOMATE or EMIGRATE or EVAPORATEProcess control is one form of automation that has been successfully exploited by various sectors of these industries. In minerals and metal processing the wide scale adoption of process control technology has, until recently, been largely limited to a few companies - most of whom have a history in the area dating back to the early 1970’s. However, there is definitely an increased and much broader interest in process control as a technology which can improve performance, productivity and profit.The economic hardships that were visited on the mining industry in the early 1980's are not easily forgotten. It is the authors' conviction that the mining industry must move to implement proven technology, in particular process control, in order to be well postured for the next (inevitable) down cycle.In pursuing the technical and trade literature, one can discover a number of example of the successful utilization of process control systems in mining and related applications. The bodies of mammals possess a very efficient mechanism for ridding themselves of inhaled dust. When the lung is healthy this mechanism works very well, and dust is quickly and completely expelled from the lung either by the respiratory tract or the lymphatics. The mechanism, however, is easily upset, and slight alterations in the condition of the ciliated epithelium or the circulation of lymph are sufficient to interfere with it, therefore the second mechanism comes into play and the dust is fixed and immobilized in some part of the lung. This, however, is not a real cleansing process, since the lung becomes a dust-trap, and may become'pneumokoniotic. The mechanism is protective at first, but later, when the accumulation of dust is considerable, it gives rise to trouble. The lung cannot become, so to speak, a physiological dust-trap, and still retain its normal structure and function; pneumokoniosis begins, which is essentially a disease due to the mechanical presence of large amounts of inert foreign material.

Rock blasting is a crucial technique employed in mining construction and quarrying industries to fragment large rocks into smaller, more manageable pieces. However, it often generates ground vibrations that can pose significant challenges. This study explores the application of Conformal Prediction (CP) in the context of rock blasting to develop predictive models that estimate blasting-induced vibrations and quantify the associated uncertainties. Various machine learning models were integrated within the CP framework using MAPIE and CREPES libraries. The results demonstrated the effectiveness of CP in providing statistically reliable prediction intervals, making it particularly useful for applications where the stakes of underestimating uncertainty can be high.

Rotary kilns, varying in construction, are used in a variety of processes. Products differ and operating conditions vary accorcling to economic requirements. All of these variables influence the degree of instrumentation and type of control necessary or profitable to install. Products fired in rotary kilns are the results of combined temperature and time treatment and the interrelation of these two factors should be kept constantly in mind in the perusal of this paper. Measurements of Kiln Temperature The securing of proper temperatures within the rotary kiln, either of the charge or of the kiln lining in the high fire zone, are basic objectives of kiln operation; therefore the measurement of these high-temperature conditions merits first consideration. For these measurements, radiation pyrometers, properly designed and protected, have proved adequate, particularly where records ox automatic control are desired, while Optica1 pyometers may serve as portable indicators. Light-sensitive devices or photoelectric cells in this service are capable of producing records as well as certain forms of automatic control. High-temperature measuring devices for rotary-kiln work should have the measuring unit protected from dust, as a continued accumulation of deposit would lower the readings. Fig. 1 shows a typical application of radiation equipment to a rotary kiln, mounted far enough away from the sighting hole through the kiln hood to be protected From puffs or stingouts and with a sighting tube having a series of settling chambers, to prevent dust from reaching the lens. Although dust conditions inside the kiln itself usually fluctuate considerably and have their effect upon the readings at that moment, such effects are not cumulative and show as a continuous fluctuation in the temperature indicated, provided the radiation unit and recorder are responsive to such slight and rapid temperature fluctuations. The ambient temperature to which a measuring unit is subjected fluctuates from possibly 0" to over zoo°F., therefore these changes should have no effect upon the final reading or upon the life of the measuring unit. A very narrow sighting angle is desirable, so that measurement of temperature may be made as far as possible into the high fire zone without effect of the flame temperature. There should some sighting means on the measuring unit, so that the proper field may be viewed. Measurement of wall temperature taken at a point where the charge has just left the wall is less affected by dusting conditions than when taken elsewhere. Pipe piles can be either closed- or open-ended piles. Pile load capacity for a closed-ended pile consists of the shaft and base resistances, while, for an open-ended pile, it consists of shaft, soil plug, and annulus resistances. In order to investigate the pile load capacity of both closed- and open-ended piles, two field pile load tests were performed. For the open-ended pile, the fully instrumented double-walled system was used to separately measure all the components of the pile load capacity. The soils at the test site were predominantly granular soils with relative densities varying from loose to dense with increasing depth. The incremental filling ratio (IFR), which affects significantly the load capacity of open-ended piles, was also measured during pile driving. The test results indicated that the total load capacity of the closed-ended pile was higher that that of the open-ended pile, mostly due to the difference in shaft capacity. The shaft and base load capacities of the open-ended pile were 44% and 20% lower than the corresponding values for the closed-ended pile.

THE property of Falconbridge Nickel Mines, Limited, is in Falconbridge township, approximately thirteen miles northwest of Sudbury. From the mine and townsite, a gravel road leads to Sudbury and a branch line of the Canadian National railway to Sudbury Junction. The ore deposit is at the southeastern corner of the 'Sudbury Basin'. It lies in a sheet-like mass, striking in an east-west direction, between norite to the north and greenstone to the south. The general attitude of the ore-body is vertical, but with frequent variations in dip of as much as 10° to the north or south. The deposit is very irregular in outline, the width varying from a few feet to eighty or ninety feet. In the vertical plane, rolls are frequently encountered. Gouge is very often present at one or both ore contacts. The norite to the north shows much jointing. The chief ore minerals are pyrrhotite, pentlandite, and chalcopyrite. The nickel content of the ore is usually double the copper content, average assays ranging from 2 to 2.5 per cent nickel and 1 to 1.5 per cent copper. The ore is of three main types: massive, breccia, and disseminated. The breccia ore, the most common type, consists of sulphides containing rounded inclusions of highly-altered country rock, which, in places, are so large that sorting is necessary in the stopes. In the norite, the breccia ore may grade into disseminated sulphides, which frequently are sufficiently concentrated for profitable mining. In places in the breccia ore, concentrations of solid sulphide masses occur. Until early in 1935, all mining at Falconbridge was by shrinkage scoping, but this method was found to be less and less suitable as greater depth was attained. When mining had reached the 1,000-foot level, ore drawn from large shrinkage stopes was found to have been diluted as much as fifty per cent by sloughing of the wall-rocks, caused by increased rock pressure and insufficient support. It was apparent that this method of stoping was un-suitable and -Mr. E. J. Martin was engaged to superintend the introduction of a method of cut-and-fill stoping.

The composition of multi-component materials is proved to be unambiguously determined by the composition uncertainty parameter (composition entropy). At the same time, every component, depending on its content, introduces a certain value into this parameter. Quality criterion of multi-component separation is determined by the total change of this parameter for all products obtained as a result of the separation process. This parameter can unambiguously estimate both multi-product separation and complicated schemes of modern beneficiation plants. It can be used to estimate binary mixtures separation, too. During the optimization of multi-product separation, another problem arises, which is not peculiar to binary mixtures. In this case, the total efficacy depends on the order of separation boundaries, as well. In the present paper, a specific example of initial product separation into seven products by six boundaries is investigated. It is clear that with respect to a single boundary, two products only can be obtained. In this case, the separation optimum is shown to correspond to the separation of boundary-class particles equally into both products. We have also established that from the point of view of entropy, the maximal possible separation efficacy corresponds to equiprobable composition of the initial mixture, i.e., the fine product quantity in the material to be separated is equal to that of the coarse product. Three groups of experiments were carried out. In the first group, the boundaries were consecutively specified from the finest to the coarsest one. In the second group, the boundaries were set vice-versa, i.e., consecutively from the coarsest to the finest one. In the third group, no sequence was observed. At every separation stage, a boundary was specified in such a way that the separated material composition was as close as possible to equiprobable one relative to this boundary. Total efficacy was different in all the three cases. In third group of experiments, its value is the highest, which confirms the advanced supposition. The obtained results are phenomenological, ? they can be applied to any processes of solid, liquid and gaseous materials separation.

The grate-kiln process has been widely applied for oxide pellet production with the quick development of steel industry in China, but ring formation takes place which adversely affects the productivity and properties of fired pellets. Rotary kiln at high temperature seems a black box, and ring formation is difficult to measure directly by current technology. It’s of great importance to monitor ring formation during firing of pellets. Therefore, a method for estimating the thickness of ring formation in rotary kilns was studied, based on working out theoretically the relationship between ring thickness and the outside surface of the kiln, according to steady-state heat transfer across a cylinder, which provides a soft-sensing technique for ring formation at high temperature, and achieves stable pellet production .

The industrial grinding process has undergone changes to better address the market and economic needs. Fine grinding of dry materials has developed to the point where classifying linings and fine ball charges improve mill efficiencies. Roller mills as well have wide acceptance due to their power efficiencies. The mill, by its nature, cannot provide the specific particle size or range of sizes which are required for further processing or final use. Therefore, various separators are operated in conjunction with the mill to control particle size. The sizing device helps minimize over grinding and control top size. Rising energy costs combined with increasingly tighter quality specifications have led to increasing study of the grinding and separation process.

The rare earths in elemental form are required for a variety of scientific and technological purposes. They are not easily obtained in this form, due to the great chemical stability of the rare-earth compounds and the strong tendency of elemental metals to react with everything they come in to contact with, especially at high temperatures. Beginning in the 1950s, when sufficient quantities of separated rare earths became available, as the result of intense research and development, three processing routes were developed to accomplish the preparation of all 16 naturally occurring rare-earth elements. They are chemical reduction of the halide intermediates, the oxides and electrochemical reduction of chlorides and oxide-fluoride mixtures. Not all the processes are effective with all the rare earths. In spite of the celebrated similarity of trivalent rare earths, the physical properties of individual rare-earth elements are sufficiently different that a variety of techniques are required for their preparation. The development of reduction processes for the rare-earth metals are covered in this paper, with focus on the oxide reduction routes. The strong reliance of effective reduction processes on the fundamental science of reduction reactions is highlighted.

Threshold blasting involves the use of small amounts of high explosive to break and fragment hard rock without having to evacuate mining personnel. The method is easily assimilated and effective in rockbreaking, but requires rigid control on drilling, charging and timing. Current underground trials are aimed at fine-tuning the amount of explosive energy and blast hole geometry to allow the firing of multiple sets of shot holes in a continuous manner. Through correct procedures, the after-blast fumes, dust and fly rock can be contained so as to provide a safe working environment. Threshold blasting hugely reduces the volumes of explosives used in mining and brings to maturity the potential of the process begun by Alfred Nobel when he introduced nitroglycerine, and later dynamite, to mining. Its key contribution is its enabling of continuous mining operations with well understood and relatively low cost technologies. The use of batch blasting, employing large burdens holds the greatest potential for delivering high flow rates of ore at minimal cost. There is good potential for rapid evolution of the concept.

The highly competitive nature of the international iron ore market has forced producers to improve the quality of their pellets. The demand for low-acid pellets suitable for direct reduction has resulted in an increase in the number of plants utilizing reverse froth flotation for silica reduction. Column flotation is being favored for this service because of low capital and operating costs and improved metallurgical performance compared to conventional flotation cells. This paper describes the benefits of column flotation and discusses some important aspects of circuit design.

Barrick's growth and development plan will add three major new mines during 2005 including the Lagunas Norte Project in the La Libertad Province of Peru, the Veladero Project in the San Juan province of Argentina, and the Tulawaka Mine in north¬western Tanzania. Lagunas Norte and Veladero are similar in that they are both green-field open pit deposits at elevations over 4,000 meters above sea level, with two stage crushing and heap leaching followed by Merrill Crowe zinc precipitation for precious metal recovery. Operating sites will each generate in excess of 700,000 ozs Au per annum with commissioning and full scale operation planned during the third and fourth quarter of 2005. Details with regards to regional geography, development schedule, production and process specifics for Lagunas Norte and Veladero will be discussed in this presentation providing an overview for the respective properties.

"The intact rock constant, mi, is one of the three basic input parameters required for the widelyused Hoek-Brown failure criterion. Values for the constant should ideally be determined by statistical analysis of laboratory test data. In this paper the influence of the inclusion or exclusion of tensile test data on derived values is discussed. We firstly investigate the relationship between direct tensile strength (DTS) test values and Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) test values based on a literature search, finding that the correlation between the two test types is DTS = 0.9*BTS, independent of the lithology being tested. Secondly, using the shear strength database of Douglas (2002), we examine the influence of confining pressure range and the inclusion or exclusion of DTS and BTS test values on calculated values of mi.Chief amongst the influences was the exclusion of tensile data in the calculation procedure, particularly when the Hoek triaxial confining stress range requirement (?3?max = 0.5?c) was not satisfied. Based on a reasonable 1:1 relationship between R (the ratio of unconfined compressive to tensile strength), use of actual tensile data in the calculations for the Hoek brown failure criterion is considered to be a simpler and more robust approach to the use of a tensile cutoff based on empirical criteria such as that of Fairhurst (1964). We advocate the fitting a failure curve using compressive and tensile test data as the most reliable means of calculating mi, while at the same time satisfying requirements as originally advocated by Hoek relating to the appropriate triaxial confining stress range (?3?max = 0.5?c) and sufficient (>5) evenlyspread data points. In the absence of triaxial data the use of R provides a practical means of obtaining estimates of mi that are more robust than guideline values."
