Newmont Ghana Gold Limited's Ahafo Operation has matured from its project ramp up stage into steady state operations after three years of operation. Management focus has shifted from addressing construction and commissioning problems to optimization and improvement. This focus change has coincided with the introduction by Newmont of a Continuous Improvement (CI) program across the company which provided a project management methodology that can be used in the execution of smaller scale projects. This paper focuses on the application of CI principles at the Ahafo Plant through the discussion of several case studies that demonstrate how these principles are applied.

This paper is a case study highlighting learnings and success in two areas challenging underground miners: change management and collaboration. It examines the implementation process of a new automated loading system in the bulk stoping area of Telfer Mine in Western Australia, controlling multiple load haul dump machines. Here, the new technology has brought together different functions and different companies to deliver a well performing automation system in a changing and challenging mining environment. The introduction of a new and different technology on site has driven collaboration between all stakeholders to break down the traditional barriers to achieve the sustained performance required. Historically, different teams have operated within silos and not always aligned to deliver a ‘best for project’ solution. Technical teams focus on the mine design, maintenance teams focus on reliability and operations execute the plan. Mining contractors focus on productivity and cost. Manufacturers focus on supply of goods and service. Optimising each silo individually is not guaranteed to provide an optimal mining solution. Involving elements from each team as seen at Telfer, has resulted in an optimal mining solution for the automated loading system. A change of focus from the technical teams to include automation parameters in the mine design; operability and maintainability built into the system design allowing for collective ownership and responsibility resulting in a more resilient solution. The implementation of the new technology was not only a technical change but more importantly, successful management of change. Elements of successful change management such as communication, vision, leadership and planning, are essential to harness a trusting site culture which is responsive to new technology. Learnings and challenges from this change process will also be discussed with the intent to improve the success rate and timelines of technology implementations in the future.

On February 5, 1973, Eastern Associated Coal Corp began shortwall mining in their Federal No. 1 Mine, thus marking the first attempt in the United States at modern shortwall mining, i.e., using a continuous miner to extract coal open-ended from pillars 100 to 200 feet wide, under the protection of a self¬-advancing roof support system (1)1/. Since then, four additional shortwall faces have been operated. While the number of face-years of shortwall experience in the United States is limited, this experience has been anything but uniform. Differences in operator motivation, coalbed parameters, geologic conditions, panel dimensions, and face equipment all have contributed to a wealth of knowledge which can provide guidance for the design of future shortwalls. The purpose of this paper is to review the history of shortwall mining in the United States and to assess its value to the U.S. coal industry in terms of the health and safety of the miner, the percentage of coal recovered, coal production, worker productivity, and relative cost performance.

This report describes the results of a 2-year investigation of extensible face ventilation techniques and systems for use at the working face in underground coal mines. The goal was to provide a safe and convenient method of maintaining the extensible system within 10 feet of the face, thereby ensuring good ventilation. A summary of approximately 20 extensible ventilation systems proposed or tried in the past is included for reference, together with a detailed description of the design, construction, and underground testing of a new extensible brattice panel and a new fiberglass duct system. The extensible brattice system utilized a special panel which could be pushed forward as the miner advanced. Brief testing in three mines revealed some conflict with the mining cycle and led to recommendations for two improved designs. The extensible duct system was designed for a Goodman borer and utilized a telescoping tube on the left side of the roof, so that it could be extended without interfering with the miner operator. For mine sections with right-hand return ventilation, a special flat tube section is used to cross over the entry. Underground testing showed substantial improvement in face ventilation without interfering with production.

Admixture use in cement products is commonplace in the construction and mining industries. Many Australian mines have an operational concrete batch plant and stock hydration control and water reducing admixtures. The benefits of admixture use, especially in shotcrete is understood and well documented. Cemented rock fill (CRF) is used to fill stope voids and create stable vertical and undercut surfaces at some Australian mines. These mines generally mix rock fill with a slurry of cement and water without the use of admixtures. Recently published work on optimisation of CRF mixes has mainly focused on the strength increases associated with changes to the mix grading proportions by the addition of fines, but not focusing on the potential benefits of admixture use. Admixture use in CRF may be the simplest CRF optimisation method, as the admixtures will often be added by the push of a button at the batch plant. A CRF testing program was undertaken to test the benefits of admixture use in terms of strength gain, using hydration control additives (HCA) and high range water reducer (HRWR) admixtures. Rock fill gradings were strictly controlled in the test process to allow clear definition of the difference admixtures provide in compression at 28 days. The testing results define admixture associated strength gains in a 6 per cent general purpose (GP) cement by dry weight CRF mix (131 kg of cement/m3). Costings have been developed to allow a mine operator to understand the cost benefits of admixture use in CRF due to reduced operating costs. Operational efficiency advances and a suggested admixture implementation plan for CRF optimisation is offered.

The single six-in-line furnace of the Polokwane Smelter is the largest installed high-intensity furnace for platinum group metals (PGM) base metals sulphide smelting in the world. The furnace employs state-of-the art technology to deliver a planned throughput of 650 000 t/a dry concentrate at a design 68 MW power input. Recently developed flow-through electrochemical techniques (1,2) were employed for measuring pH in high concentration aqueous solutions and geothermal brines. The pH values of (1) 5.0 mol kg-1 NaCl + x mol kg-1 HCl, (2) 3.0 mol kg-1 of NaCl + 0.5 mol kg -1 of KCl + 1.0 mol kg-1 of CaCl2 + x mol kg-1 HCl (x < 0.1 mol kg-1), and (3) mixtures of Al2(SO4)3-H2SO4-H2O, MgSO4-H2SO4-H2O, and NiSO4-H2SO4-H2O solutions have been measured at temperatures from 100 to 280°C. The obtained experimental data and their thermodynamic analysis demonstrated that the electrochemical system can be used for on-line pH monitoring of high concentration aqueous solutions with an accuracy of ±0.1-0.3 pH units over a wide range of temperatures. Greater deviation exists in real laterite leach solution measurements due to in situ precipitation of Na-alunite. The system is excellent for research and process development work. Further work is needed to ensure robust operation under pressure leach conditions of laterites.

The traditional vertical transportation systems deliver both gangue and useful mineral. The extraction of the desired minerals requires the construction of mineral processing and waste management plants, driving production costs, and often creating a negative environmental impact. The proposed technology is an integration of mineral processing within the transportation system. The mined rock is crushed and then loaded into a vertical lifting system filled with heavy media, with an intermediate density between the mineral and the waste rock. Driven by gravity separation, the desired mineral floats to the earth's surface, while the waste sinks. Delivered minerals and sunk waste is extracted from the heavy media and is then regenerated to a dry state. The useful mineral should be suitable for further use, and the waste used for backfilling. Remained residues of the heavy media may be recycled and reused in the vertical transportation system. Trials of the proposed process in a pilot format have confirmed economic and environmental advantages over traditional methods of transportation and mineral processing technologies. Quemetco, Inc.,. as a subsidiary of RSR Corporation, operates one of RSR's three secondary lead smelters in the City of Industry, California, next to a residential area within Los Angeles County. The Reverberatory furnace serves as the main reactor for melting lead grid and paste recovered by the battery crushing system. Feed material is introduced via screw conveyor after drying in an upstream rotary kiln. Slag produced by the Reverb flows directly to an electric arc furnace. Products from this one-pass furnace system consist of soft lead bullion from the reverb, hard lead bullion from the arc furnace, and a non-hazardous slag from the arc furnace. Furnace bullion is processed into finished product in a six-kettle refinery. An overview ·of plant operations is presented. Where applicable, references will be made to changes that have taken place during the last decade.

Mining is the art of disturbing ground. All phases of a mine’s life cycle from exploration to building and operating a mine, through closure, has a physical impact on the earth. There is currently increasing public and stakeholder awareness owing to a wide range of issues including heritage protection, environmental stewardship, and social impacts therefore ground disturbance must be conducted in a way that honours and respects all agreements, regulations, legislation, and social expectations. A comprehensive ground disturbance permitting process has been developed through consultation with major mining companies and Traditional Owner groups. It operates from strategic business planning through to closure and rehabilitation. Adherence to the principles and process of permitting helps to minimise risk by ensuring that mining companies conduct their business in an inclusive, professional, reliable, and consistent manner that stakeholders reasonably expect, and that mining companies can be proud of. Built on a geographical information system, supplemented with a specialist database, this process allows request, review, and approval by subject matter experts, to operate in a common environment that is transparent, facilitates collaboration, improves efficiencies, and reduces the risk of error or omission. The application of new technology can effectively highlight changes that naturally occur in today’s dynamic ESG domain and provides the perfect platform to record actual disturbance against authorised and planned allowances. The social license to operate demands that strong governance of the ground disturbance process, described herein, can be demonstrated to any interested stakeholder, and mining companies recognise that this principle is central to the betterment of the mining industry.

The Antamina orebody is a geologically complex, polymetallic skarn located in the Peruvian Andes. A range of copper and copper-zinc ores are campaigned separately through the concentrator producing copper and zinc concentrates as well as lead and molybdenum by-products. Ore type classification at Antamina is based on chemical assays; geological or lithological variations are not considered. Consequently, each ore type demonstrates a wide range of concentrator performance. Antamina is currently implementing a system to track ore movements from the shovel face to the concentrator. Relatively sophisticated models of the ROM and coarse ore stockpiles ahead of the mill will be used to account for the variable delay between mining and milling. One of the numerous benefits of ore tracking is the ability to directly associate the measured concentrator performance with a physical location in the orebody. Using existing mine planning software, three-dimensional models can be created of such performance measures as metal recovery, concentrate quality, operating cost and reagent consumption. Such a database of information allows the true value of different ore sources to be determined. The value of an ore source is conventionally measured as metal content (individual or combined ?equivalent?) with a cut-off grade applied to indicate some base level operating cost. However, the true value of an ore source should include dynamic factors like haulage cost, reagent use, smelter penalties and even prevailing metal prices. If an ore source is considered from all perspectives rather than simply its potential to deliver value, the concept of ?ore? becomes more flexible. Any ore source that reveals itself to be unprofitable can be eliminated from the mine plan or possibly blended with others to improve its value. The ability to predict mill performance ? and thereby profitability ? is a powerful tool. In an operation such as Antamina, where managing ore sources, campaigns and the delivery of a variety of concentrates in a narrow timeline to customers is a daily challenge, prediction is the key to success and improved efficiency.

"Physical impurity transfer in solvent extraction (SX) has a significant impact on operating costs, electrowinning (EW) performance, and cathode quality. Some operations use a wash stage to limit impurity transfer by diluting the entrained pregnant leach solution (PLS) to prevent direct transfer to EW. Wash stage operating conditions vary impacting impurity transfer. A number of factors impact dilution efficiency including mixer continuity, wash aqueous acidity, and organic quality. The impact of these variables on dilution efficiency was studied and compared to current industry practice. INTRODUCTION With the exception of iron, impurity transfer in copper SX is due to PLS carryover in the loaded organic via aqueous entrainment and crud movement. The quantity of impurity transfer is influenced by many variables including operating set points, organic quality, and settler housekeeping. Crud management and treatment is a common practice aimed at minimizing transfer of impurities to EW. Crud is a complex solid-stabilized emulsion of aqueous and organic[9]. As such, it contains a large aqueous component and the associated impurities (from the PLS). A common practice is to remove interfacial crud to prevent movement. Additionally, mixer continuity can be altered to enable compaction and improve the efficiency of interfacial pumping[10]. Understanding the factors impacting aqueous entrainment and optimizing the available controls should be a key focus for any operation. Aqueous entrainment in the loaded organic can be impacted by: • Mixer continuity • Mixer organic/aqueous (O/A) ratio • Mixer speed and impeller type • Organic and aqueous depths • Specific settler flow • Use of settler internals (picket fences, coalescing packs) • Organic quality • Design and operation of loaded organic tanks Conventional thought is to run the E1 mixer in aqueous continuity to reduce aqueous entrainment. Generally, O/A ratios close to 1:1 result in improved metallurgical and physical performance. Mixer speeds should be chosen to achieve acceptable stage efficiencies while minimizing over-mixing. Organic depths can be increased in the E1 stage to increase retention time and minimize aqueous entrainment. Settler internals can also be used, but require maintenance to maintain effectiveness. The quality of the plant organic inventory will impact physical performance. Poor organic quality can lead to higher phase disengagement times increasing impurity transfer to the electrolyte. Additionally, the design and operation of the loaded organic tank can impact impurity transfer[8]. Despite the variables that can be used to reduce aqueous entrainment and crud movement, impurity transfer is still an issue in some operations. For these operations with high PLS impurity concentrations, a wash stage may be beneficial to manage impurity transfer. Understanding factors impacting wash stage performance is important to optimize performance and limit impurity transfer."

During the twentieth century the copper smelting industry achieved dramatic expansion corresponding to the vast growth of global economy. This was largely due to innovations in pyro-metallurgical processes, such as autogenous smelting and continuous smelting and converting technologies. However, as copper production capacity increased, its impact on the environment also could not be ignored, and thus with increasing global environmental awareness, many smelting operations either had to renew or rebuild their facilities. In addition to these changes, in places like Japan and Europe, with scarce primary resources, the treatment and recovery of metals from a variety of items such as car shredder dust, used electrical appliances and electronic devices, on top of scraps traditionally treated, is having a profound effect on the reduction of waste and the preservation of primary resources. Thus compared to the days when copper smelting focused on the environmental control in order to break with "Smoke Stack Industry", copper smelting today is making an important contribution to the sustainable development of human society.

The objective of the project descibed in this report was to design and field test a model health and safety program at a coal mining company and a gold mining company. The model program was implemented primarily by providing training on loss control, accident investigation, and the operation of mobile equipment; and by providing technical assistance to help solve health and safety problems. Data were obtained from company records on occupational injuries, illnesses, accidents, and "near misses"; and through direct observation of employees performing a large number of randomly selected jobs. At the coal mine, employees were observed five times over a 15-month period. At the gold mine, employees were observed six times over a 16-month period. During the study, the percentage of sampled jobs containing one or more safety deficiencies decreased from 74.3 pct to 36.6 pct at the coal mine and from 86.4 pct to 19.1 pct at the gold mine. Work on this project was performed by Woodward Associates, Inc., under a Bureau of Mines contract.

This paper presents an overview of passive, engineered, biologically-based anaerobic bioreactor (ABR) treatment systems of the sort that can be used to remove dissolved copper from mine wastewaters. The paper begins with a brief history of the origins of this treatment technology and continues with a discussion of principles of engineered wetlands (EWs, advanced kinds of constructed wetlands, CWs) and the use of vertical sub-surface flow (VSSF) varieties that contain pulp & paper biosolids as the reactive medium for EW cells. A brief outline of a procedural methodology used in evaluating the potential for biological treatment on a site-specific basis is also included. An introduction to the microbiology of passive biologically-based treatment systems is followed by some recent research results in the general area of wetlands and ABR research. The paper concludes with a brief discussion of several sites known by the authors to have successfully (or not) demonstrated the potential of this treatment option.

Due to the remote locations of mining projects and the need for long transmission lines to provide electrical power, mining sites often operate with poor network power quality and low short-circuit capacity. To cope with this situation, more and more mining operators are considering the installation of appropriately designed synchronous condensers together with power factor correction and harmonic filter systems (PFC & HFS). The installation of such power quality equipment is viewed as a technological advancement in the mining application. An adequate level of short-circuit power is essential and has to be ensured for the safe and reliable operation of especially large cycloconverter-driven gearless mill drive systems (GMDs) used for grinding. This paper explores the impact, technical advantage and reasoning for the selection of this advanced hybrid technology to cope with the power system challenges of future mining projects. It also delves into the potential problems and how to address them.

"P.T. Freeport Indonesia's lrian Jaya Operation has been producing copper concentrate continuously since 1972. Numerous ore discoveries and five mill expansion programs have seen the initial milling rate of 7,200 MTPD escalate to the present rate of 125,000 MTPD, producing 2.5 million pounds of copper and 3,500 troy ounces of gold per day. The latest expansion, commissioned in February 1995, incorporates a 34 foot Semi- Autogenous Grinding (SAG) Mill, two 20'x30' Ball Mills, conventional roughing, cleaner column flotation, and attendant upgrades to the existing concentrate pumping and dewatering facilities. This paper will describe the SAG Plant flowsheet, and focus on the key training issues which contributed to a successful plant start-up.IntroductionP.T. Freeport Indonesia's operations in the Ertsberg mining district are located in the Jayawijaya Mountains of Irian Jaya, the easternmost province of the Republic of Indonesia. P.T. Freeport Indonesia (PTFI), the operator, is owned by Freeport MacMoRan Copper and Gold (81.3%), the Government of Indonesia (9.4%), and private Indonesian investors (9.4%). Geographical location, and sailing distances are provided on the attached location map.The operation stretches over 7 4 miles ( 114 km) from the dewatering and concentrate shipping facility at the Port of Amamapare on the Arafura Sea to the Grasberg open pit located at 3400m. The regional geology is covered in detail by Van Nort et al (1991 ), with current proven and probable reserves estimated at 1.13 billion metric tonnes grading 1.30% Copper, 1.42 ppm Gold, and 4.06 ppm Silver. The Grasberg open pit mining operation provides 92% of the mill feed, and is described in detail by Hickson (1991). The remainder of the mill feed is derived from several underground block caving operations. Current production rates provide a mine life in excess of 25 years. However, very favorable geology in the area leads to expectations that additional reserves will extend the life of the operation considerably."

Dundee Precious Metals Inc. (DPM) owns and operates the Ada Tepe gold mine and processing facility (previously referred to as the Krumovgrad Gold Project) located in south-western Bulgaria. The Ada Tepe mine became the first green filed project in past 40 year in Balkans and one of the few in Europe when it was commissioned during the first half of 2019. The plant produces a high-grade gold silicate concentrate generated through its comminution circuit and staged floatation reactors (SFR’s) while depositing its tailings in a state-of-the-art Integrated Mine Waste Facility (IMWF). This paper presents the successful commissioning, ramp-up and optimization of the Ada Tepe processing plant and how the various challenges, including that of an inexperienced front-line workforce, were overcome. More specifically addressing how the implemented modern processing technologies and the operational readiness program, supported the people and process to achieve the design parameters safely and consistently. "Long-term strategic planning at BHP Billiton’s Western Australia Iron Ore business aims for sustainable value maximisation of its large, long-life, low-cost, expandable mineral inventory and supply chain infrastructure. While mine plans are key components of this value equation, this objective requires a whole-of-business approach through comprehensive consideration and optimisation of the full value chain. Only through a system view do we believe that the value proposition of a set of plans is truly optimised.The fundamental considerations include: mineral inventory information, given its intrinsic uncertainty and risk/knowledge horizon a marketing view of future quality premium/discount based on overall market quality load whole of supply chain optimisation on a throughput accounting basis alternative sequences of capital decisions closure costs with significant magnitude of total movement requiring optimisation as part of the plan.
