Application of surface tension measurements has been made to molten silicates in order to determine the effect of sulphur upon the surface tensions of synthetic blast furnace slags. In melts with the same molar ratios of AI2O3 + SiO2 to the basic oxides BaO, CaO, and MgO, the surface tensions increase in the order of oxides listed. Sulphur lowers the surface tensions of the basic BaO, basic CaO, acid BaO, acid CaO, and acid MgO slags in that order; and the concentration of excess sulphur at the slag surface increases in this same order of slags. The rate and amount of desulphurization of iron by these slags is favored by a low excess surface sulphur in the slag. IN a previous paper,1 the authors discussed the applications of surface tension measurements of molten silicates to problems of metallurgical interest. Of major importance is the aid that such studies lend to forming a working concept of slag structure. Since the ability of a slag to desulphurize metal depends strongly upon its composition,2"4 fundamental information about the structural differences between various slags which contain sulphur should aid the development of better desulphurizing media. For that reason, the present investigation concerns the effect of sulphur upon the surface tensions of synthetic blast furnace slags. Experimental Procedure , The maximum bubble-pressure method was used to measure the surface tensions of synthetic blast furnace slags in the temperature range 1300° to 1600°C. Today underground infrastructures, like tunnels and especially wide spread underground mines, are often equipped with ethernet based communication systems. These networks are used for the unified communication of data, voice and video. As these networks stretch along the major tunnels and in increasing scale also into the production areas, a high degree of coverage can be reached. For wireless coverage, standard IEEE 802.11 WLAN access points are being used. In order to provide a maximum availability and reliability, the active components are equipped with battery backup power supplies and the network infrastructure is set up in a redundant way using ring or meshed topologies. This provides a much higher availability compared to traditional phone systems or dedicated data links using a conventional star topology.Distributed computing intelligence that is installed on active network nodes throughout the whole network, additionally supported by a central server system, creates the basis for new mine safety functions introduced in this paper for both coal and non-coal mining. These new safety functions cover the detection of potential emergencies, using the status of the network as a æsensorÆ, as well as dynamically guiding people to safe exits or rescue shelters in case of an emergency. Furthermore, these functions are of important benefit for improving the efficiency of search and rescue operations following a major incident or accident underground.

The demand or consumption of fluorspar has been somewhat taken for granted in recent years, except for the specific interest of those that produce, market, and/or consume the commodity. A tradition was established of thinking that as the steel and aluminum industry goes, so goes fluorspar. This is much less true today than in the past. The industry is becoming more dependent on chemical industries that feed primarily off hydrofluoric acid (HF) production. The Bureau of Mines recently published an assessment of world fluorspar reserves and resources that created a foundation of valuable data that can be used to monitor fluorspar availability. Celebrations were held this year commemorating the 100th anniversary of the isolation of fluorine. The United States and other countries continue to struggle with the controversy of ozone depletion and the effect of fluorocarbons on the atmosphere. The goals for the U.S. Government's strategic stockpile are being reevaluated. The market for fluorine chemicals is changing and diversifying, making it a challenge to assess and forecast fluorspar/fluorine demand. This paper reviews the recent past of fluorspar and helps set the stage for a more detailed assessment of this critical commodity.

"During the past three years the Bureau of Mines has carried on an extensive research program at the Rolla Laboratory for the beneficiation of low-grade Arkansas baixites by ore dressing methods. As a result of this study a 50-ton pilot mill was designed and constructed at Bauxite, Arkansas, by the Bureau to continue the investigation on a semi-commercial scale. The built both to reduce the experimental work to practice and to obtain operating data that cannot be determined by laboratory or small scaleTen samples of bauxitic material were mined and stockpiled at the plant site to ensure an ample supply of material for milling in the pilot plant. These samples were obtained from various bauxite deposits in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Arkansas. The deposits were selected as typical of a wide range of bauxitic material which would necessitate treatment under different conditions and by various concentration methods. All of the samples contained a higher silica content than permissible in Bayer-grade bauxite and several contained so much iron oxide that the available alumina content of the ore was mate¬rially lowered. From data obtained by milling operations on these ten samples, milling characterietics of most of the ores in the district should be predictable. This paper summarizes the results obtained in the laboratory testing of representative samples of each stock pile, and the results of small scale continuous testing of the composite sample of the ten stock piles in the gravity-flotation pilot plant at the Rolla Laboratory."

A Aceros Arequipa é a maior siderúrgica do Peru. A empresa opera uma planta em Pisco, com uma aciaria para 850.000 t anuais de aço líquido, e uma capacidade de laminação de 1.250.000 t anuais de produtos longos. Um projeto de integração vertical incluindo coqueria non-recovery, sinterização e alto-forno foi considerado. Como parte do projeto, um forno piloto de coqueificação foi instalado, com o intuito de testar carvões próprios e importados e obter a máxima participação de carvão local nas misturas. Foram testados sez carvões peruanos e antracito. Os carvões importados escolhidos foram três da Colômbia e quatro dos Estados Unidos. Levando em conta as baixas propriedades dos carvões próprios, foi introduzida a estampagem da carga. A máxima participação dos carvões locais, mantendo a qualidade requerida, foi obtida com 80% de carvão peruano, e 20% de um carvão columbiano. Pode-se usar até 10% de antracito, junto a 60% de carvão peruano e 30% de carvão colombiano.

In this way the effect of repair materials on the amount of slag tapped would be found with a reasonable degree of accuracy. Ten heats were made for this study with careful attention to a uniform charge. The steel was the usual grade B and melting was carried out in a 3 1/2-ton top-charge Lectromelt furnace. Melting practice in all cases was the same-complete oxidation, with recarbonization by means of low-silicon pig iron.

For shortwall mining to be profitable, the additional capital investment of about $1 million for shortwall roof supports must be offset by decreased total operating costs and/or increased coal production. The Bureau of Mines therefore conducted a demonstration project to compare shortwall and room-and-pillar mining. Daily two-shift production from the bureau of Mines-Beth-Elkhorn Corp. shortwall demonstration n project averaged 975 tons of raw coal, compared with 905 tons from a room-and-pillar unit operating undo r similar conditions. The estimated direct operating costs for the shortwall and room-and-pillar unite were $4.21 and $4.03 pier ton, respectively. The profitability of the shortwall system was found to depend not only on the increased depreciation cost of the powered roof supports and the decreased cost of supplies and materials but also on such factors as the fixed and variable indirect costs and the selling price of the coal. Shortwall mining was demonstrated to be a viable alternative to room-and-pillar mining.

Professor Klaus Schönert and his students used fundamental physics to develop many of the principles required for the design and scale-up of "Gutt Bett Zerkleinern" devices such as the high pressure grinding roll (HPGR) or the high pressure roll crusher (HPRC). As the equipment evolved so have the tools used for its selection and analysis. In the current paper discrete element modeling (DEM), Metso's proprietary Fast Breakage simulations, and Schönert's packed bed piston test are combined with energy based population balance models (PBM) to yield an alternative to ore characterization and equipment selection by pilot plant testing. The resulting methodology is used to take the next step in understanding these devices with a view toward predicting plant performance. This paper describes a journey beginning with precise modeling of a small HPGR including stud geometry and system hydraulics. A key to predicting performance is the accurate modeling of individual particles, their motion in the machine, the probability of breakage and redistribution of fragments, and the inter-particle breakage events that occur between the rolls at different pressures, speeds and moisture levels. Advanced DEM simulations and particle breakage characterization methods provide the necessary technology. The resulting combined models were validated using a small diameter laboratory scale unit. The validated physics based model was used then used to predict the performance of plant scale units using a specific energy based scale-up method. Scale-up results are analyzed in terms of power draw, throughput, and discharge product size distribution.

OPEN-PIT mining of coal is relatively a recent innovation; men still active in the industry can trace its development. Re- viewing the growth of operations from the original horse-drawn scrapers, through the various stages of power equipment to the huge strip- ping shovels of today, one also notes changes in the methods of what the coal man calls preparation at the face. We really should not call it face preparation because, in contrast to underground mining, a face does not exist in strip mining. Further, preparation of the coal for market at the loading point has already, in but a few years, become largely of historic interest only and modern mines as well as old mines recently modernized rely almost entirely on separate and elaborate preparation plants to produce marketable coal. The symposium on mine safety held in connection with the annual meeting of the Institute three years ago, it. was pointed out that "at present no convenient, reliable, accurate means for determining the gas content of mine air is available, for use by the ordinary mine man." In a letter addressed to Coal Age and published on Feb. 25, 1925, Thomas T. Read, then Director of the Safety Service of the Bureau of Mines, stated: "It is to be hoped that sometime in the near future some-one will invent a reliable methane indicator that is con-venient to, use and will permit the keeping of all flames of every character out of bituminous mines, through doing away with the safety lamp." The Martienssen methane detector, which has re-cently received the official approval of the Bureau of Mines, is intended to. meet the demand for such an in-strument as expressed at that meeting and on many other occasions. The characteristics which qualify it for the task are the following: (1) simplicity; (2) small bulk and light weight; (3) ruggedness; (4) accuracy sufficient for the requirements; (5) safety; and (6) dependability. The principle on which the working of the instrument is based may best be explained by giving a brief out-line of the various stages of development through which the inventor, Professor Martienssen of the University of Kiel, Germany, advanced to the final solution of the problem which he had undertaken to solve.

Since bauxite mining began in the Irwinton District, Wilkinson County, Ga., in 1912, it has been on a small scale, as most of the deposits of high-grade ore are small. The bauxite has a high silica content, and its use has been largely limited to the chemical industry. Drilling under this project did not disclose any bauxite deposits of commercial value: However, numerous holes penetrated high-alumina clay deposits, but no attempt was made to delimit them, as the project was solely an exploration for bauxite. Bauxite was first discovered near Irwinton in 1907. The district covers virtually all of Wilkinson County and extends into the adjoining counties of Washington, Baldwin, and Twiggs. Mining was begun in 1912 by the Republic Mining & Manufacturing Co. on the Honeycutt, Parker, and Daniel properties, which are 1.5 miles from Wriley on the old Irwinton to Milledgeville Road.

A mathematical model is developed to determine the economic thicknesses of refractories and insulations in rectangular furnaces, Both the heat loss cost and the lining investment are taken into account to achieve a minimum operation cost. For the sake of calculating the heat flux, the paper is particularly concerned with the simulation of the three-dimensional transient heat conduction processes in the lining and a Douglas-Rachford method is used to solve the finite difference equations, The model has been used to design an industrial electric resistance furnace operated periodically. the values of temperatures and power consumption measured from the furnace correspond with the model results.

En ese sentido, el oxígeno es el agente que incrementa la disolución del oro, y el cianuro, su medio de transporte. Asimismo, aumentar la cantidad de oxigeno disuelto en la solución cianurada de riego mediante el uso de venturis (dispositivos que aspira aire del medio ambiente) logra soluciones cianuradas con concentraciones de oxígeno más altas, de forma se lograría una mejora en el proceso de la extracción del oro.

During more than 100 years continuous mining of the lead-zinc orebody at Broken Hill, an immense amount of geological data has been collected about shear zones related to the orebody. The challenge to current mine geologists is to synthesise and interpret these data sets in a way that is applicable to production demands. Precise knowledge of the locations of major shear zones is important not only for the determination of ground conditions but also to develop an understanding of ore remobilisation along these structures. Traditionally, geological information has been collected from drill core and back and wall mapping underground, and interpreted on sections that are approximately 20 m apart. The recent introduction of MaptekÆs Vulcan software has enabled the shear zones to be modelled in three dimensions. The new three-dimensional shear models have been combined with seismic data from the Southern Cross area. The seismic data is collected from a microseismic monitoring system installed in the Pasminco Southern Operations in August 1996 (Rauert and Tully, 1998). The addition of seismic information to the shear zone models has led to a greater degree of certainty about the shear zone locations and has provided information about shear zones in areas yet to be drilled.

"This paper examines the grinding and wear processes in drum mills. A summary of the industry’s long-term experience with the proposed linings is presented. A method is proposed for assessing the efficiency of the grinding energy distribution between the successive stages. A case study is presented of grinding energy redistribution at Talnakh Concentrator by replacing spiral classifiers with a drum-type hydraulic screen. The problems of the kinetics of grinding processes in ball mills and semi-autogenous (SAG) mills are examined. It is demonstrated that in ball mills the feed particles are disintegrated by triaxial compression in the mill zones where discrete slippage of the charge occurs at major force interactions between the layers. Mechanism underlying increases in the specific energy consumption in grinding circuits based on SAG mills is shown.The problem of improving the throughput and reducing the specific energy consumption in mineral feed grinding is highly relevant because of the significant energy intensity. Up to 80% of the consumed energy is used to disintegrate ore fed into the drum mill. At all development stages of the drum mill grinding theory, the researchers have paid a great deal of attention to studying the patterns of the charge motion and the kinetics of the feed particles disintegration processes. In [1], it was shown that, due to the slippage between the charge layers being lifted, drum mills at concentrator plants operate in a mixed cascade and waterfall mode. A feature of the mixed mode is the toe zone, where the charge contacts the lining and the transition to a circular path takes place. Studies of the charge motion in the toe zone made it possible to develop a method for designing cross-sectional profiles of lining plates [2] for ball mill drums. The method is based on the principle of interaction between the balls and the lining, where the non-working rear surfaces follow the relative motion path of the balls before impacting the lining, while the working surfaces are orthogonal to the rear ones. Lining with the proposed profile provides contact with the charge and slippage-free transition to a circular path. This ensures an longer service life of the lining, a reduction in specific energy consumption, and an increase in the mill’s feed rate. The proposed method is applicable when designing lining plates of various materials. Steel liners with the proposed profile have been successfully operated [3] for more than 40 years at a number of projects in the industry."

In this paper, the compressive strength and failure patterns of reinforced cemented paste backfill (CPB) were studied aiming to promote the stability of backfilled stopes. The concept of ductile backfill was proposed and a series of unconfined compression tests were carried out on both non-reinforced and reinforced cemented paste specimens. Portland cement (3% to 5% by weight of tailings) and five different types of ductile materials (0 to 0.5% by weight of solids) were employed in this experiment for the specimen preparation. The test results showed that inclusion of ductile materials enhanced the unconfined compressive strength (UCS), reduced the post peak stress loss and transformed the failure behaviour of specimens from classical brittleness to ductility. The strength of CPB reinforced with different proportions of polypropylene fibres was compared. The stress-strain curves illustrated that both cement and fibres contributed to the increase of UCS, but higher strain values at the peak stress were achieved by fibre reinforcement. CT sliced images acquired from X-ray computed tomography (CT-scan) demonstrated that the reinforced specimen developed irregular crevices at the edge of cross sections and gained the capacity of bearing large displacements owing to the mobilised tensile strength of fibres. It leads to the potential of avoiding unexpected falling blocks of CPB when adjacent mining occurs. This finding highlights a strategy to improve the self-supporting capacity of the fill mass with less cement usage and reduce the ore dilution rates when excavating to adjacent stopes.

Mine dust is the most serious occupation hazard in coalmines. And many coal workers suffer from pneumoconiosis because of long-term inhalation of respirable dust. Reducing the dust concentration of workplaces by effective technical means is an important way to prevent coal worker’s pneumoconiosis (CWP). In order to overcome deficiencies in existing dust control technology for underground mining, especially the disadvantage of water spray technology mounted on roadheaders or continuous miners, the authors developed an integrated dust suppression technology utilising foam for fully mechanised heading faces. This paper presents an overview of the principles, materials, equipment and application of this technology. Among these, a jet type foaming device and a green foaming agent were developed, which can realise the goal of efficient preparation of foam. In addition, an arc fan nozzle used for foam spraying was invented, which can effectively cover and enwrap the dust produced by the roadheader at the cutting point and achieve the goal of efficient utilisation of foam. This dust suppression application of the proposed foam technology was investigated on fully mechanised heading faces. The results show that the dust concentration was cut down significantly with a dust suppression efficiency of greater than 85 per cent, an increase of over 30 percentage points compared to the water spray system. This study demonstrates that this foam technology can play an important role in dust suppression on fully mechanised heading faces, which provides an important method to improve the working environment and protect coal workers’ health.CITATION:Wang, D and Wang, H, 2015. An interlaboratory testing program was undertaken in support of an ASTM standardization program for simultaneous combustion-infrared analysis for carbon and sulfur in ores and related materials. Statistical analysis results from the study are used to generate the within-laboratory and between-laboratory precision data needed for standardization of the methods. The interlaboratory precision statistics are also interpreted to estimate the uncertainty in calculation of net carbonate value classifications using a simplified quantitative risk analysis technique.
