Analysis of AI, As, Ba, Be, Ca, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, K,. Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, Sr, 11, V and Zn in various types of samples collected at Van Stone mine (a Pb-Zn deposit in Washington) and surrounding areas indicates that the concentrations of several elements in water, soil and sediment are higher than their background. values. Concentrations of metals in water decrease sharply downstream and are below the maximum contaminant levels specified for drinking water. Under present physico-chemical conditions, contamination of water is insignificant but the enrichment of heavy metals is found in soil and sediment.

Tellurium has mainly been used as an alloying element for resulfurized free-machining steel. It globularizes MnS inclusions and improves both machinability and mechanical properties of such steel. This effect is quite sensitive to tellurium concentration.Therefore,its incorporation should be controlled accurately during the secondary refining process, using the thermodynamic properties of tellurium in molten iron. In the present study, Wagner’s interaction parameters of various elements on tellurium were experimentally evaluated by vapor-liquid equilibration, and the vapor pressure of tellurium was controlled using the transpiration method. The values obtained were compared with those of oxygen and sulfur, and they were found to be correlated with the standard Gibbs energy of formation of the corresponding oxides, sulfides, and tellurides.The results indicate that the relations described here could provide estimates of interaction parameters that have not been experimentally determined thus far by using available thermodynamic quantities.

In 1985 the U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated the mineral resources of the Sheep Creek West Wilderness Study Area (ID-111-36A), Owyhee County, ID, for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. The Wilderness Study Area consists of 11,680 acres centered approximately 20 miles south of Grasmere, 10. It contains no mines, claims, or prospects. No mineral resources were identified; however, a geode occurrence within and adjacent to the Wilderness Study Area, and minor amounts of placer gold along Sheep Creek, may be of interest to rorkhounds and recreational gold panners.

On December 8th of last year, the new St. Clair River tunnel was holed-through to Port Huron, Michigan. The tunnel, commissioned by the Canadian National Railway, was needed to replace an existing tunnel that had been built between 1889 and 1890, and had remained in continuous operation until the new tunnel was opened to traffic in April of this year. The original tunnel, after more than 100 years of service, was still structurally sound, but was too small to accommodate the double stacked container cars and other advances in the railroad's equipment that had developed over the years. Prior to the construction of the first tunnel, all freight was barged across the river. It was a slow, expensive process, which in winter was sometimes impossible. The nineteenth century tunnel was built in twenty months, utilizing two shields that mined to the middle from each end. The lining, which is still in excellent condition, consisted of bolted, cast iron segments, with an O.D. of 6.4 meters. It was the first sub-aqueous tunnel built in North American, and it's use of compressed air under the river and hydraulic power on the shields may also have been firsts. The digging was done by hand, and the muck hauled out by mule drawn wagons. Boulders and methane gas were reported to be a constant problem during the drive, and compressed air sickness was common, but when the two shields came together in August of 1890, it was reported that the alignment was within 6 mm. The new St. Clair River Tunnel was constructed for basically the same reason as the original. The larger equipment which the railroad is using today would not fit through the old tunnel, and once more they were forced to ferry the cars across the river.

O presente artigo investigou como a condição de operação das zonas de resfriamento em máquina de lingotamento de placas contribui para o desempenho de lanças air mist. Tal investigação foi realizada no laboratório da Spraying Systems Brasil a partir das premissas de projeto de uma nova máquina de lingotamento e um novo conceito de lança air mist: menor consumo de ar comprimido, amplo turndown e qualidade de cobertura por toda a curva de operação do resfriamento. As curvas de performance foram montadas para diferentes condições de utilização de ar comprimido: de 1,5 a 4,5bar de pressão constante. Cada lança teve das vazões mínimas às máximas de água ensaiadas. A qualidade do perfil do jato produzido foi verificada para cada ponto das curvas obtidas, em mesa de distribuição no laboratório da Spraying Systems. Com as imagens em mãos, foi possível selecionar aquelas condições de vazão de água e pressão de ar comprimido com melhores perfis de jato e cobertura. Como resultado, a fabricante da máquina pode validar e/ou modificar a curva de trabalho de resfriamento da máquina e garantir as melhores condições do perfil do jato e uniformidade de resfriamento.

Laboratory data for 155 field muds and 77 .shales have been used to develop correlations to estimate the net streaming potential component of the SP. Analysis of these data and comparison with field tests show that streaming potential corrections must be made to obtain an accurate estimate of the electrochemical potential for use in the determinntion of formation water resi-iiviy. The self-potential curve is related to formation water resistivity, and considerable effort within the oil industry has been directed toward clarifying this relationship. The Schlumbergers and Leonardon1,2 recognized that two types of potentials, electrochemical and electro-kinetic, resulted in the net potential variation in the borehole. Most of the later papers have dealt with the electrochemical component and its controlling parameters. The investigations of Wyllie,2" Salisch' and Moore5 provide the most extensive sources of data on streaming potentials across mud cakes. These authors observed streaming potentials of sufficient magnitude to be of critical importance in SP interpretation, if it is assumed that streaming potentials develop only opposite permeable beds. Streaming potentials across shales have been reported by Schenck and by Gondouin, et al.7 Since SP magnitude is the difference in potential opposite shale and sand beds, these authors suggested that the net streaming potential component may be negligible. The present investigation was initiated to evaluate empirically some of the parameters controlling the magnitude of the net borehole streaming potential and to determine whether useful relations between mud properties and net streaming potential could be established. Field muds were used in this investigation. These muds were characterized by the amount and type of chemical treatment utilized for five days before Sampling. Filter loss, mud resistivity, mud density and filtrate resistivity were determined for each mud with conventional methods and apparatus. Mud filtrate pH was estimated with Hydrion pH paper for the appropriate range. Streaming PotentIals Across MuD Cakes Commercial calomel-saturated KC1 electrodes are subject to potential changes attributed to contamination of the very small fiber-tip bridge by particles of clay from the drilling mud.3 To minimize this difficulty, a large diameter bridge (Fig. 1) was constructed with saturated KC1-agar gel and a filter disc of microporous porcelain. Natural chromite mineral is a solid solution of spinet end members namely: chromite (FeCr2O4), hercynite (FeA1204), magnetite (Fe3O4), magnesio-chromite (MgCr2O4), (MgA12O4), and magnesio-ferrite (MgFe2O4). A phase transformation in chromite minerals occurs in oxidising conditions during the soda-ash roasting reaction. This phase transformation plays an important role in improving the extraction efficiency of Cr3+ from mineral phase. The extraction efficiency of chromium (Cr3+) from chromite to a water¬soluble sodium chromate (Cr6+) salt depends upon the decomposition kinetics of the spinet phase. An investigation of the phase changes in chromite ores in the absence of sodium carbonate was carried out in air, argon, and in argon +5 % hydrogen gas mixture. The thermodynamics of phase transformation reaction in chromite solid solution phase is discussed using the solution model proposed by Sack and Ghiorso [1]. The microstructural changes and the changes in elemental compositions of different phases were examined by SEM and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) respectively. The experimental results indicate that the solid solution spinet phase in chromite mineral undergoes spinodal decomposition under the influence of oxygen partial pressure and temperatures. The structure of phases formed and their morphologies suggest that the phase decomposition may be similar to those observed by Burkert et. a]. 121, although the scale of phase separation in chromite appears to be strongly dependent on oxygen partial pressure.

During the processing of metals like Cu, Ni, Co, large quantities of solutions, which contain co- products such as Sb, Cd, Pb etc. are generated. These solutions if processed to recover the metals help in conservation of metals as well as environment preservation. The present study was taken up to recover antimony from process solutions using zeolites. The effect of pH of the solution, time and type of zeolite viz., chabazite, mordenite, erionite and clinoptilolite on the sorption of antimony was investigated. Rate of sorption increases with pH and about 77-pct. antimony sorption was observed with chabazite at a pH of 6. Optimal conditions were established for the maximum recovery of antimony fiom process solutions. The mechanism of sorption for Sb was proposed in terms of adsorption and intraparticle diffusion. The calculated adsorption constants from Langmuir and Freundlich equations indicated that the adsorption of antimony on chabazite was strong.

IN January, 1939, Dome Mines, Limited, purchased a few bars of an alloy drill-steel for the purpose of testing its fatigue resisting qualities as compared with those of a straight carbon-steel then in general use at the mine. A steel of the following analysis was selected: Carbon 1.00% Sulphur 0.022 Chromium 1.26 Silicon 0.17% Phosphorus 0.028 Vanadium 0.1 Manganese 0.32% Molybdenum 0.30 This steel has a tensile strength of 180,000 lb. per square inch and a Brinell hardness of 380, as compared with a tensile strength of 114,000 lb. per square inch and a Brinell hardness of 230 for the standard carbon drill steels, in the as rolled' condition. The result of this test showed that about five times as many runs could be obtained from the alloy steel before failure from fatigue. It was therefore decided to replace gradually the one-inch quarter-octagon carbon steel, then in use, with seven-eighths quarter-octagon alloy steel. In January, 1940, six machines was placed on the seven-eighths steel and this was gradually increased until now (March 15th, 1941) fifty per cent of the steel being used is alloy steel. An O'Donovan furnace is used at the Dome for heat-treating their carbon drill-steel. In this furnace, a magnet withdraws the steel when the critical temperature has been reached, and the operator then places the steel in the quenching tank. Not being able to use this furnace for the alloy steel, the management felt that some means should be developed to determine the quenching temperature without depending upon the operator's judgment of the correct 'colour'. With the assistance of the Canadian General Electric Company, a radiation-type vacuum thermocouple pyrometer was adapted to this purpose, with excellent results; in fact, with this instrument no previous experience in hardening is necessary and results are remarkably uniform.

"Since the mid-19th century the River Emscher in the German Ruhr District has been used for disposing of wastewater. In the early 1990s, it was decided to replace the existing open wastewater system with a sewer system and to restore the River Emscher to its natural state. The major Emscher conversion project is divided into a large number of individual schemes, with construction phase 30 being the largest. By applying the pipe jacking method, interlinking tunnels with section lengths in excess of 1,100 m are constructed. USAGE OF THE EMSCHER OVER TIME The 85-km long river Emscher flows right through the Ruhr District. It has its source to the east of Dortmund and flows into the river Rhine near Dinslaken (Figure 1).The Emscher has been used to dispose of wastewater since industrialization began about 200 years ago. Intensive coal mining over the years led to considerable subsidence causing stagnant sewer areas which in turn led to typhus and other deceases. Thus in 1899, the Emschergenossenschaft was founded to create an efficient interceptor system for a catchment area of 865 km² through lining, raising and Emschergenossenschaft decided to free the waterways of the Emscher system from sewage and to improve them in ecological terms by 2020. A budget of 4.5 billion euros was earmarked for this purpose.The construction of sewer conduits began in order to no longer transfer the wastewater into the Emscher. The currently ongoing construction of the “Emscher Interceptor” - the main sewer - represents the heart of the Emscher conversion project. The interceptor will run along the river over a length of 51 km. Three pumping stations are required to confine the sewer’s depth to elevations between 15 and a maximum of 40 m below the surface. Since early 2012, the Emscher has been free from wastewater east of the Dortmund-Deusen clarification plant. There are two further clarification plants situated along the Emscher, which treat the still contaminated river water down-stream. Once the Emscher Interceptor is in operation, they will receive wastewater solely from the tunnel system."

The successful development of industrial minerals projects requires an integrated, holistic understanding of the metallurgical and product performance test work in the context of the geological setting of the deposit and applied to mining, processing and marketing of saleable products. The product specifications provide the essential starting point for geometallurgical studies. A sound understanding of the desired product is needed to design and interpret a program of test work. Examples are provided from recent studies on bentonite and graphite deposits.For bentonite projects, the naïve testing of only the cation exchange capacity (CEC) as a measure of purity can lead to unexpected outcomes when the deposit is mined. The CEC attribute may remain the same, while other important properties such as pH and swelling index change markedly with depth, due to weathering and oxidation, leading to disappointing production outcomes.For graphite projects it is not enough to report only total graphitic carbon content (TGC). Knowledge is required of the in situ flake size and textures in addition to purity and flake size distribution of extracted graphite, which may all vary from one domain to another across the deposit. Such geometallurgical attributes of the ore will impact on the ‘basket price’ used to estimate the value of marketable parcels of expected product.Disclosure of such information must be considered part of fully informing the market. As with all new project developments, consideration of the JORC (2012) and VALMIN (2015) Codes requires disclosure of all material information. This includes the geometallurgical characterisation, ie those aspects of the mineralogy that impact on resource evaluation, ore reserve definition and project valuation.CITATION:Shaw, W J and Scogings, A J, 2017. "A study of five commercially available solvent-extraction diluents in combination with three commercially available extractants under sub-Saharan African copper solvent-extraction conditions yielded intriguing results. A variety of physical and chemical property analyses showed that the diluents have some property differences, but overall the properties are similar and provide comparable solvent-extraction performance. Although each physical chemical property technique provides useful information, no individual test result suffices for prediction of diluent performance. Furthermore, a diluent should be evaluated within the conditions for which it is targeted to determine a true measure of performance. Overall, the diluents studied possess appropriate physicochemical properties for sub-Sahara Africa copper solvent-extraction conditions and can be utilized to achieve efficient, safe and reliable operations. INTRODUCTION Background Today, commercial SX diluents are available globally from a limited number of manufacturers. Production quality and consistency of these diluents have improved tremendously over the past 20 years. For example, diluent flash points have been increased incrementally to improve transport and handling while reducing fire hazards. In addition, properties have been successfully modified to minimize evaporative losses, ultimately reducing SX plant raw material costs. Diluent manufacturers have also focused on meeting performance requirements of SX plants, including eliminating components detrimental to SX operations, such as olefinic groups that can react with various species resulting in changing phase-disengagement properties over time, as well as ensuring that proper hydrocarbon components are present within diluent mixtures to maintain good reagent–metal complex solubility. These challenges have been met in the midst of ever-increasing stringent environmental regulations. Sub-Saharan Africa copper SX operations pose a unique set of conditions for diluents due to inherent ore compositions and the associated high reagent concentrations required for complete copper extraction. Chevron Phillips Chemical Company, LP has been manufacturing hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon-based diluents since the mid-80s, applying this experience to identify the physical properties considered crucial for proper performance in SX operations. This paper documents the findings of a study utilizing commercially available diluents in combination with extraction reagents commonly utilized in African SX operations to evaluate the relative performance of the diluents under sub-Saharan Africa copper SX conditions."

Current methods for producing low-carbon manganese alloying materials for the steel industry are energy intensive and costly. To enable wider implementation of high Mn steel alloys, a novel solid-state Mn ore reduction strategy is therefore being investigated. This solid-state process, modelled on existing Direct Reduced Iron technology, employs a methane-containing atmosphere to reduce Mn ore pellets to a metal carbide. These pellets may then be smelted, yielding a Mn-rich master alloy. It is well established that CH4 is a suitable reductant for Mn ore powders; however, the reduction behaviour of industrially relevant Mn ore pellets by CH4 is poorly understood. The present work reports the results of an investigation undertaken to address this knowledge gap. The results of this study highlight the significantly different reduction behaviour exhibited by the Mn ore pellets relative to the ore powder under similar conditions and suggest that the diffusion of CH4 into the pellet interior is the limiting factor in achieving complete reduction.

Ground control failures are one of the main causes of accidents in the underground stone mining industry. Some of the fundamental tools for rockfall hazard identification are related to rock mass characterization and geotechnical discontinuity mapping. Recent technological advances in these methods are related to remote sensing techniques and point cloud processing software for automated discontinuity mapping. Remote sensing techniques, such as LiDAR and photogrammetry, generate multimillion point clouds with millimetric precision, capturing the structure of the rock mass. The automated point cloud processing tools offer alternative algorithm-based methods to characterize and map these discontinuities. However, their applicability is constrained by multiple factors such as site specific conditions of the rock mass and the parameters used within the mapping algorithms. This paper evaluates the performance of automated discontinuity extraction software compared with manual virtual discontinuity mapping. Sampling windows from laser-scanned sections in an underground limestone mine are defined and mapped using discontinuity set extractor (DSE). Results from the virtual discontinuity software are compared with manually extracted fractures from I-Site based on reviewing orientation, trace length, spacing, number of extracted discontinuities, and processing time. The analysis determined that the automated mapping algorithm was able to identify the same discontinuity sets that had been manually mapped. The automated mapping software mapped an excessive amount of smaller fractures, which caused the comparison of both mapping techniques to be unsuccessful in terms of trace length and spacing.

Equilibrium constants have been determined for the jeaction C (in steel) + H2O = CO + H2 as a function of carbon content (0.013 to 0.74 ujt pct) and temperature (1200° to 1800°F) by using a flow system in which the water-vapor content of various gas mixtures containing hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen was systematically controlled. The equilibrium partial-pressure ratio K1 = PcoPH2/PH2O was obtained for two low-carbon steels and four Fe-C binaries from a series of runs made at each temperature. By comparison of Ki with the analogous ratio for the reaction C (graphite) + H2O = CO + H2, the activity of carbon in steel (ac) was comDuted for each temperature and carbon content studied. From these data values of the equilibrium constants for two other carburization-decarburiza-tion reactions of importance were estimated. The chemical compositions of the two steels and four Fe-C binaries used are given in Table I. Specimens of Steel E were cut from a 0.035-in.-thick commercially box-annealed and temper-rolled lot of a low-carbon low-metalloid steel. Steel F was a commercially hot-rolled rimmed steel that was cold-reduced at the Laboratory to a 0.059-in. thickness. Fe-C binaries A, B, C, and D were vacuum-melted and poured, hot-rolled, pickled, and cold-reduced at the Laboratory to furnish specimens 0.035 in. thick. Sheet specimens were cut from all lots to approximately 3/4 by 3 in. by gage and were vapor-degreased with trichlo-roethylene and weighed before heat treatment. Particulate matter is one of the leading pollutants in the mines and in the communities in the areas near or surrounding the mines. The availability of large Clinical and environmental data sets obtained from the mines has brought about the need to use better approaches to analyze the collected data. Prediction and control of particulate matter concentration in the mining environment is essential in minimizing air pollution and protecting the respiratory health of mine workers. The main objective of this research work is to analyze datasets obtained from a mining area using machine learning techniques which will then be followed by the real-time estimation of dust particulate in the mines. Datasets collected over 8 years in an hourly sampling rate from an open cast mine is cleaned and analyzed for trends and patterns. Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), Support Vector Machines and decision trees techniques are applied to analyze and predict the particulate concentrate. The estimation of particulate concentration using Artificial Intelligence will significantly contribute toward the development of quantitative tools to be used in correlating of cause and effect of dust concentration in mines. The results obtained in this work will form a sub-unit of a respiratory health monitoring system for mine workers. The system is essential in the collection, analysis, and tracking of mine workers’ respiratory health, thus it forms part of an early intervention system for mine workers. From the existing theory, we expect the Artificial Neural Network will perform much better than previously used classical models.

SLAG composition, slag constitution, reactions in slag, and reactions between slag and metal-in other words, the physical chemistry of slags-are matters of great importance to the open-hearth operator, whether or not he makes use of any detailed knowledge of them. Although this is a relatively young branch of the science of steel- making, much progress has been made; however, much remains to be learned, and many of the statements that can be made at present are probably--or even certainly-subject to future change. Nevertheless, the physical chemistry of slags is sufficiently developed to provide a reasonably secure basis for real understanding of steelmaking reactions. FUNDAMENTALS OF SLAG CONTROL By way of introduction, some time is spent in this chapter on effecting an easy transition from some of the more "practical" manifestations of slag to discussions couched in the more formal language of physical chemistry. This necessitates a certain amount of repetition, but it is felt that the purpose of the chapter is best served in this way. Reactions in the metal phase have products that find their way into the slag and are important components thereof; they are discussed in detail in the preceding chapter. Some substances distribute themselves Between slag and metal in definite fashion, and others are found only in the slag. Their reactions are a large reason for this chapter. Limitations of Slag Control. The open-hearth process is essentially oxidizing and cannot be otherwise operated. (Oxygen gradients in the furnace, the mechanism of oxygen inflow, and similar subjects are discussed in Chapter XIX.) As shown in the calculations of material and heat balances for the charge (see Chapter XV), from 25 to 50 lb. of oxygen will flow from air or combustion gases into the charge or molten bath during the heat for each ton of liquid steel

INITIAL development of the south orebody at San Manuel is being carried out from the No. 1 and No. 2 shafts. The haulage and grizzly levels are being driven to develop the upper one third of the massive hydrothermally altered and fractured monzonite orebody. This first haulage level has been placed at the 1475-ft level with a grizzly level 60 ft above. The grizzly level will be connected to all service shafts so that men and supplies can come down to the grizzly level and go to working places without congesting the haulage level. These connections are also a vital part of the ventilation plan. The haulage level is being advanced along the north and south fringes of the orebody and connections are being driven to the three shafts now under construction. The No. 1 and No. 2 shafts will serve the development work with supplies, skip hoisting, and ventilation at each shaft and the two shafts are connected on both the grizzly and haulage level.
