THE MAGNITUDE of the anthracite industry's drainage problem in the Northern field of Pennsylvania is realized when it is known that, for the 8-year period 1944-51, all pumping plants in this region pumped an average volume of 112.5 billion gallons of water from the mines to the surface each year. This is over 214,000 gallons per minute pumped against an average hydrostatic head of 400 feet each year for that period (12).4 By comparison, Lake Wallenpaupack, the largest artificial body of water lying wholly in Pennsylvania, contains 71 billion gallons of water in its 24-square-mile area; the average volume of water pumped from the mines in the Northern field each year during the 8-year period was 58 percent more than the volume impounded in Lake Wallenpaupack. The natural configuration of the drainage area overlying the Northern field subdivides the total area into two major drainage areas-the Lackawanna River drainage area and the Susquehanna River drainage area overlying the Wyoming Basin. Although the 169-square-mile drainage area overlying the Wyoming Basin is slightly less than half that of the Lackawanna River drainage area (10), the total volume of water pumped to the surface from mines in the Wyoming Basin is 21 percent more than the total volume pumped to the surface from mines in the Lackawanna Basin. From this, it is apparent that the Susquehanna River and the pervious deposits in the buried valley over which it flows in its course across the coal measures of Wyoming Valley is the greatest single source of mine water affecting mines in this area. Because of its relatively flat terrain, the wide flood plain of Wyoming Valley does not facilitate rapid runoff; consequently, much of the surface water seeps directly into the buried-valley deposits and eventually into the mine workings.

During the past 5 years the Bureau of Mines has published information circulars dealing with mining methods and costs at 78 ore mines; 7 circulars, each of which is devoted to a discussion of one of the principal mining, methods; and 23 circulars dealing with special phases of mining, such as ventilation, shaft sinking, tunnel driving, the cost of equipping and developing prospects and small mines, underground transportation, diamond drilling, and ground support. These circulars were written by many different authors, and in order that the method of presentation and the basis for compilation of data might be the same in all the papers the Bureau drafted an outline to be followed in their preparation. To clarify the data in these circulars, which are in the libraries of many engineers and mining companies, and the summarized data presented in this paper, that portion of the outline dealing with cost and labor-performance data is reproduced below.

Much of our knowledge of the behaviour of underground coal dust explosions has been derived from less than full-scale experimental explosions in facilities as small as 0.25 m diameter pipes. Although a substantial body of research has been undertaken in larger galleries approaching the size of full-scale modern mine roadways, there are still questions regarding the scaling of results to full-sized roadways in modern coalmines. Questions also surround the issue of comparing or scaling results between smooth and rough walled galleries, round and rectangular galleries and galleries with differing wall thermal properties due to different materials of construction.This paper will examine the influence of gallery size, cross-section area and wall roughness and thermal properties upon the characteristics of a coal dust explosion. Data from past explosion research will be examined and assessed for its application to the problem along with theoretical considerations for these factors.Recommendations on the design and minimum appropriate size of explosion galleries for assessing the performance of explosion inerting strategies, passive and active explosion barrier performance and determination of appropriate pressure ratings for ventilation structures will be made.CITATION:Humphreys, D, Collecutt, G, Greenwood, J and O’Beirne, T, 2015. The Bureau of Mines determined the factors involved in the corrosion of starting sheets used in the production of electrolytic zinc with the ultimate purpose of adapting zinc starting sheets to commercial practice . Under present practice , zinc is electrodeposited on aluminum cathodes and subsequently stripped for melting . The use of zinc instead of aluminum would eliminate the need to strip the deposit , thereby reducing the cost of handling and melting it , but zinc has not been suitable because it was too vulnerable to the corrosive attack of the electrolyte . Serious attack was found to be limited to the areas of the cathodes situated immediately above the surface of the electrolyte and to re - entrant corners . It was possible to avoid solution - level corrosion by immersing the starting sheets completely , exposing only a relatively heavy suspension member to solution - level attack . Zinc starting sheets could be made as reliable as aluminum and could be continued in residence for periods up to 39 days . Periods as long as a week were feasible under conditions similar to those found in commercial practice . A test of zirconium as a starting - sheet material showed that it promoted corrosion of the deposit to a lesser extent than aluminum and that the deposit adhered less tenaciously . These two properties lend themselves to the development of ways to strip deposits mechanically from zirconium starting sheets . Titanium was unsuitable for use as a starting - sheet material .

Ferris Sainsbury: In order to drill a 12-111. hole down to 1200 ft, In most places you would have to employ a rotary tricone bit With a down-the-hole hammer, I expect by that depth significant Inflows of water would be experienced Even with foams, we would not be able to get the water out of a hole of that diameter So the down-the-hole tricone method of drilling would be best. To keep it straight, we would probably employ the largest square drill stem compatible with the diameter of the hole. Ron Haxby: Is it common in drilling contracts to put in a vertical hole clause? Ferris Sainsbury: You can put in the vertical hole clause Ron Haxby: Does it cost more? Ferris Sainsbury: Normally, if the hole deviates, the driller can correct it with deflection wedges and will charge it back to you at cost, plus 10% or somewhere along that range Any drill hole has a tendency to go perpendicular to the dip, and there are times when stabilization systems are not successful in preventing the hole from turning into the dip of the formation. The only solution, in this situation, is to go in with an oriented wedge and kick the hole back out.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing cloy reining, crushing, and grinding methods and costs at various operations throughout the United States. These Toners are designed to disseminate technical information regarding methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production casts. Although the publication of total production cants might not be advisable in sore instances, yet a knowledge of operating costs is essential to the technical discussion end study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically coiled to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. The following report deals specifically with the methods employed by the Clay City Fire Co., Uhrichsville, Tuscarawas County, Ohio.

"In-situ characterizations of green state part density and sintering state have long been desired in the powder metal community. Recent ·advances in non-contact electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) technology have enabled in-situ evaluations of the acoustic attenuation and velocity as sintering proceeds. Pure aluminum (99.999%) and aluminum alloy powders were prepared with high-pressure gas atomization (HPGA). The powders were pressed in a uniaxial die and examined with acoustic waves for changes in velocity and attenuation during sintering. The changes in acoustic properties were correlated with sample microstructures and mechanical properties. Evolution of the acoustic echo train during sintering is shown to provide information on the state of sintering as well as having the potential for detection of interior flaws.IntroductionThe versatility of powder metalallurgy (PIM) technology in the manufacture of complex shapes has enabled an increasing amount of wrought and casting production capacity to be converted to PIM technology. However, ultrasonic inspection of green components produced using PIM techniques remains a challenge and is not generally practiced [1]. Inspection of PIM components in the green state is highly desirable, because the green part can be reclaimed with only accepted components being subjected to further costly processing. Another potential benefit is characterization and greater understanding of the sintering process itself. An increased scientific understanding of the sintering process enables intelligent process control, greater reliability of the production process and a lower rate of rejection of the finished product. In order to realize these potential benefits, it is necessary therefore that accept/reject criterion be based on real time nondestructive evaluation of the green-state components and the sintering process.Most current nondestructive inspection techniques suffer from their inability to perform inspections below the near-surface region with the exception of X-ray and to some extent pulsed eddy current [2]. X-ray inspection requires extensive shielding of production personnel and expensive film and film processing. While development of pulsed eddy current techniques have lessened the impact of the well-known skin effect, the depth of penetration of the induced eddy currents remains somewhat of an issue [2]."

These inspection standard have been prepared for use in the Federal inspection of strip mines producing, bituminous coal, anthracite, and lignite. This circular is a revision of the Safety Code for Strip Mining, which was prepared by the Bureau of Mines and employed as a guide for Federal inspectors. Numerous changes have been made in the original code to keep the in step with improvements in the industry. With continuing changes in mining methods and facilities some of these standards may become inapplicable and further revision may be advisable. Therefore, questions regarding these standards, and suggestions regarding new standards should be brought to the attention of the Bureau of Mines. Few States haves laws pertaining to strip mines, but where such laws do exist it is possible that some of the standards may conflict with them. In cases of conflict, the intent is not to advocate noncompliance with State laws, but to suggest reconsideration of such laws or safety orders.

In heap leaching, the oxidative dissolution of value minerals encapsulated deep within large particles cannot be fully understood on the basis of the bulk solution conditions relative to variable solution conditions near the mineral surface. In the present study, the diffusion of the oxidising species through inner particle pores is simulated in a model apparatus that separates an inert platinum electrode under controlled reduction potential from the bulk solution through narrow pores of varying length. The Cu-NH3 system was selected as a model system and Cu(II)/Cu (I) as the redox couple of interest. Platinum probes inserted in the pores allowed the measurement of varying redox potentials along the pore length. Results showed that in a 10 mm pore, there exists a narrow (0.5 mm) zone near the reduction surface that is depleted of the oxidant and in which its supply is strongly diffusion limited, even if it is in abundance in the bulk solution. The consistent presence of this narrow diffusion region across all experimental results indicated that the transportation of the reduced species away from the reaction surface had the most significant influence on the potential variations within the pore. This was further supported by the minimal effect of varying concentrations of both Cu(II) and dissolved oxygen on the solution potential within this region.

"Experience from Australia has identified what is referred to as non-conventional surface subsidence behaviour. This occurs under irregular surface topography, resulting in valley closure, valley floor uplift or “upsidence”, and far-field horizontal movements – even occurring beyond conventional “angle of draw” limits. This paper discusses such behaviour recently observed in Pennsylvania and focuses on the 2005 case of Duke Lake Dam in Ryerson Station State Park. In July 2005, there was a significant increase in water leakage through a number of growing cracks in the dam leading to the dam being breached to avoid an uncontrolled failure. An underground longwall mine was located approximately 900ft to the north, mining at depths of 330 – 720ft. Investigations (including a subsequent ground movement monitoring program) found a range of evidence in the vicinity suggesting that valley closure and far-field horizontal movements may have occurred resulting from the adjacent mining. The paper discusses the phenomenon of non-conventional subsidence behaviour and the Ryerson State Park case study, including an assessment of mining, geology and subsidence impacts and suggested ground behavioural mechanisms. INTRODUCTION Non-Conventional Subsidence The conventional understanding of coal mine subsidence on which most current subsidence understanding and prediction techniques are based, includes the concept of angle of draw which effectively limits the lateral extent of subsidence effects and impacts. Within this zone – above and marginally beyond the boundary of mining – downward vertical subsidence is the dominant component, together with localised horizontal movements towards the mined region, with related tilts and strains. However, more recent experience from Australia over the last two or three decades has identified what is referred to as non-conventional surface subsidence behaviour. This is found to occur in areas of irregular surface topography or variable terrain, and is characterised by phenomena such as valley closure, valley floor uplift or upsidence, and far-field horizontal movements, all of which can occur beyond the conventional angle of draw limits. On January 9, 2018, the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) Council formed the CIM Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Committee (CIM MRMR Committee), which is a combination of the previous Standing Committee on Reserve Definitions and the Best Practices Committee. As part of its mandate, the CIM MRMR Committee updates guidelines for use by Industry, which include the Uranium Practice Guidelines. The 2024 CIM Uranium Leading Practice Guidelines were adopted by CIM Council on November 22, 2024, and supersedes the 2003 version. The main principles and guidelines relating to preparation of Mineral Resource and Mineral Reserve (MRMR) estimates are provided in the CIM Estimation of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Best Practices Guidelines (MRMR BP Guidelines, as updated from time to time). The MRMR BP Guidelines provide information pertaining to metalliferous and other deposits and many sections are readily applicable to the preparation of MRMR estimates for uranium deposits. However, additional guidance is appropriate for uranium deposits due to the radioactive nature of uranium, and its amenability, in some cases, to in situ recovery (ISR) mining methods.

The construction industry can and needs to contribute to a more sustainable world. Accordingly, geotechnical works potentially have a significant share. In this context, Bauer understands “sustainable products for geotechnical works” as those that may cause less emissions and increase the sustainability of construction activities. In order to structure the efforts and systematically pursue sustainable targets in the construction sector, and in the specialist foundation industry, the “17 sustainability goals” presented by the United Nations in their AGENDA 2030, can be used for general guidance and for continuous improvement. Benchmarks for relevant economic and social objectives, mainly with environmental aspects, are inevitable. The key parameter to sustainable products for geotechnical works in the focus of this paper is the optimisation of processes on site needed to fulfill the client’s building task, including the selection of technologies and construction methods with minimum environmental impact and minimum carbon footprint.

The 17th National First-Aid and Mine Rescue Contest was held in the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center, Louisville, Ky., October 2, 3, and 4, 1957. The meet was under the auspices of the Federal Bureau of Mines and the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association, in cooperation with the National Coal Association, United Mine Workers of America, State mining departments, local mining institutes, and coal operators' associations. The Arrangements Committee, as authorized by the General Committee, made all the necessary arrangements for conducting the 1957 contest. Members of the Arrangements Committee were: Harry Gandy, Jr. (chairman), National Coal Association; James B. Benson, Southern Coal Producers' Association; Charles Ferguson, United Mine Workers of America; George C. Fundamental studies on the reaction of limestone or dolomite at high temperature with S02 are extended to the realm of large scale primary copper smelting. Whereas flue gas desulfurisation in the electric power utility industry is concerned with S02 concentrations normally less than 0.5 percent, high temperature smelting gases can have S02 levels approaching 100 percent. The reaction involved is very exothermic so proposals are made in this paper for returning the heat generated in sulfur fixation directly back to the copper smelting process. This integration leads to metal production with lower energy requirements than current technology. The anhydrite reaction product can either be disposed of locally with minimum adverse environmental impact or upgraded to a value-added product. It is assumed, of course, that no viable market exists to support sulfuric acid production.

Continuous development of lead recycling technologies has driven the increasing contribution of secondary lead in battery manufacturing over the years. This review presents and compares the different technologies available for pyrometallurgical processing of secondary lead materials. Smelting is most often achieved in reverberatory, blast, rotary or electric arc furnaces, using single or two stage routes. Thermal re fining is the most common technique used for the production of lead and its alloys. Some improvements in battery breaking technologies and emission control have also specifically contributed to improve the performance of the smelting and refining units. Recycling lead is facing the challenge of increasing production while meeting more and more stringent regulations. This review will also include an analysis of the current secondary lead market as well as an economic outlook for the years to come in regards to rapidly changing environmental standards.

There is plenty of evidence to indicate that at least one of man's chief interests in life is to make himself as comfortable as possible. If you doubt this, just watch the fellow next to you for the next half hour trying to find the most comfortable position that a hard chair has to offer. Comfort, however, does not always mean an easy chair. To some, it may mean a wealth of money: to another, freedom from worry. But to most of us, it means first of all a comfortable atmosphere in which to live, and to a great many of us it probably also means freedom from that annoying task of firing the furnace. Today more than ever before, automatic heat is one improvement that is placed high on everyone's list. Perhaps this is because automatic heating is becoming relatively cheaper. Perhaps it is because of a good publicity campaign on the part of the oil and gas men or maybe it is just that we are getting lazier day by day. At any rate, almost every issue of Better Homes and Gardens, House Beautiful, or your other favorite home magazine carries an article extolling the virtues of this or that automatic heating system.

Mineral processing is an energy and water intensive activity. Mill comminution equipment usually has high energy requirements which necessitate extensive cooling to remove heat. Cooling requirements are typically 10% to 20% of the comminution energy. If there is an adequate supply of suitable water, open water-based cooling systems are the simplest, cheapest and most energy efficient cooling method available. This paper describes a method to determine the water demand for open water-based cooling systems at a plant and to determine whether the mine has sufficient water to meet that demand.

"Traditionally, the implementation of an automated advanced process controller in any mineral processing complex is a challenge, mainly due to the quality of resources and technologies required, the uniqueness of each control solution and the uncertainty of the engineering hours needed to complete the task. Thus, the use of advanced and proven control technology becomes a key factor when deploying the control strategy. However, success would still not be possible without the presence of common sense, process knowledge and fundamental process data. Minera Los Pelambres, taking advantage of such factors and its accumulated process experience, implemented a novel and successful combination of MPC (Multivariable Predictive Control) and advanced control for secondary grinding and regrinding stages at its copper concentrator plant. In both cases, the control objectives are: being capable of processing a variable feed from the upstream process while at the same time avoiding to become a process bottle neck and yet, maintaining an adequate product quality (in terms of size distribution) to the process downstream. Additionally, for the case of the vertical regrinding mill (vertimill), the control system should also be capable of keeping an adequate circulation load and making an efficient use of the available grinding power. In either case, extending hidrocyclones availability while maintaining their performance is a must, since both factors are required for process and maintenance purposes. Thus, the process control problem becomes one with a multi-variable type of process with multiple control objectives to satisfy simultaneously. In trying to solve it, many mineral processing operations have implemented basic or conventional control or even better yet, expert systems. Minera Los Pelambres believes that better and faster results can be achieved using a combination of MPC and advanced control. Such strategy was successfully implemented, reducing considerably process variability while maintaining high throughput and keeping the process well within constraints limits. Their control philosophy, implementation process, main results and their key performance indicators are discussed here."

ASARCO Incorporated has upgraded or is in the process of upgrading the Galena mine electrical, pumping, refrigeration, compressed air, ventilation, hoisting and rockburst monitoring systems to allow continued mining and development work on the 1 589-m (5,200-ft.) level and to provide services for projected deeper mining and development. Additionally, a separate lead-silver milling circuit has been added to the silver-copper mill to process lead-silver ore reserves. This paper describes completed and planned improvements made to date on these systems.
