The Carboniferous system of rocks in the Maritime Provinces include as workable mineral and organic substances, gypsum, anhydrite, salt, coal, building stones, grindstones, limestones, brick-clay shales, fire-clay shales, oil shales, etc. The system is, therefore, pre-eminently of economic value to the provinces in which it occurs, and the more knowledge we may gain concerning it, the more we may be prepared to aid in the development of these useful substances. For this purpose it is not sufficient to state that the ground upon which we stand is underlain by Carboniferous rocks. In-discriminate digging or drilling will not open many new mines of wealth, however difficult it may be to dampen the optimism of gamblers. For mineral wealth has not been scattered in the rocks haphazard, now here, now there, but its distribution has been the result of natural earth forces acting at intervals throughout the countless millions of years that have elapsed since our planet was born. As regards the majority of metalliferous deposits, the earth forces involved have resulted in the penetration of surface or sub-surface rocks by molten rock-matter and associated mineral solutions from deep-seated sources. But the economic Carboniferous deposits that have been mentioned are themselves types of bedded surface rocks rather than immigrant deposits, and their formation and geological history is closely related to that of the rocks with which they are interbedded.

The potential of rockfall at open-pit mines presents a continuous hazard to mine workers and is typically mitigated by designing catch benches at empirically determined widths. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is working in conjunction with industry and academia to revisit and update current catch bench guidelines to better match acceptable risk tolerances for modern mining practices. To begin this process, a rockfall testing program was designed to gather empirical runout and bench catchment data at partnering mine sites in the Western United States. This paper presents a detailed description of each component of the rockfall testing program, including scouting and safety plan development, equipment requirements, synthetic rock development for uniform testing across varying bench configurations, local rock collection for testing of mine-specific geology, data acquisition during testing, and data processing. Additionally, this paper describes how the program has been updated over time according to lessons learned during initial rockfall testing.

In the mathematical analysis of electrical networks, the electrical devices are often modeled using idealized network elements such as current sources, voltage sources, and resistors. An analogous approach is outlined here for the modeling of mine ventilation networks, which can be considered nonlinear resistive networks. The modeling technique proposed uses five basic (non-reducible) elements: the H element, the Q element, the D element, the R element, and the N element. These elements are characterized by their (a) pressure gain or loss, (b) air quantity, and (c) pressure-versus-quantity relationship, each of which may be known or unknown. In addition to the definition of the basic elements, the necessary conditions for which there exists a unique solution are discussed. This is performed using theoretical developments derived from electrical circuit theory and illustrated in example networks. The proposed procedures are useful in the solution and characterization of mine ventilation networks.

Copper concentrates can be comminuted in an attritor within a very short time to a particle size of 1 - 0.1 um. Addition of sodium hydroxide enhances commninution. The concentrates, suspended only in water, can be completely dissolved under oxygen over pressure and temperatures ranging from 120 - 180°C (248 - 356°F), because the surface area of the concentrate has been significantly increased by the ultra fine grinding. Addi¬tion of a small amount of silver ions to leach liquor containing sulfuric acid acted as a catalyst for the dissolution of chalcopyrite, because of the formation of local elements on the surface. The addition of C1- ions was also catalytically very effective. With this method it is possible to completely dissolve the copper contained in chalcopyrite concentrates after ultra fine grinding within 30 min at 110°C (230°F) under an oxygen partial pressure of 1 atm (14 psig). Several flowsheets demonstrate the industrial feasibility.

MINING geology does not lend itself - very readily to a review embracing "improvements in methods," as perhaps do shop practices or laboratory procedures. The "methods" used in mining geology are simply the application of geology to mining; winning the ore, the handling of material, mechanical appliances, all belong strictly to mining proper, and have no place in a review of geology as applied to mining. A comprehensive review would necessarily cover a .very broad field, which could be subdivided into many -parts. The effect oj unidirectional solidification upon the microstructural, crystallographic and mechanical characteristics of high -purity A1-A13Ni eutectic a1loy specimens has been investigated. varying the growth rate caused the morphology of the Al3Ni phase to gradually change from platelets to rods. In addition, the effect of increasing the rate of planar liquid-solid interlace movement is to decrease the Al3Ni rod diameter and inter-rod spacing. The platelets and rods grow approxinlately parallel to each other and are aligned in a faulted substructure. A single unique crystallographic relationship hetween the A1 and ASNi phases was found and may he descrihed as : interface {001} Al3Ni {331} Al and growth direction <010>Al3Ni || <110> Al The platelet interlace and the aligned rows of rods are both uniquely defined by the above statements. Alignment of the Al3Ni phase by unidirectional solidification has given rise to a threefold increase in strength over that exhibited by specimens with an as-cast microstructure. These results illustrate the possible use of this eutectic alloy as a zohisker -reinforced structure. It has been demonstrated by Winegard et al.,1 Kraft and Albrighht,2 Chilton and winegard,3 Chad-wick,4 Yue,5 Tiller,6 and others that a planar liquid-solid interface may be established in binary eutectic alloys by proper control of heat flow during the solidification process. The unidirectional movement of such an interface results in a eutectic mi-crostructure consisting of an essentially parallel array of the two phases over an entire ingot. Two dominant phase micromorphologies have been produced using this technique: that of substantially parallel alternating lamellae of each phase or long thin parallel rods of one phase imbedded in a continuous matrix of the other phase. While not all eutectics can be controlled in this manner, it has been shown that a "normal" eutectic may, under properly controlled conditions of purity, liquid and solid thermal gradients, and solidification rate, be forced to solidify with essentially parallel phase particles. Kraft and Albright2 have demonstrated that, when the growth rate is too rapid or when the thermal gradient in the liquid at the growing interface is too low, a layer of constitutionally supercooled liquid, formed by impurity build-up, will stabilize a cellular rather than a planar interface. The unidirectional movement of the cellular interface forms the macrostructure of eutectic colonies.7 Chilton,3 Chadwick,4 and Tiller,&apos; studying eutectics of zone-refined Pb-Sn, A1-CuAl2, Zn-Sn, and Cd-Zn systems, noted that in the absence of impurities a planar interface is stabilized even when rapidly solidified. Although it is generally agreed that impurities break down a planar interface to form the eutectic-colony macrostructure, at present the origin of the varying micromorphologies (i.c., plates or rods) in a given normal eutectic alloy is not completely understood. Tiller8 has predicted that the micromor-phology produced may be dependent on solidification rate (i.e., at fast rates a rodlike structure is preferred whereas at slow rates a lamellar structure should form), and also suggested that rod formation may be favored at large phase-volume ratios. yue5 has experimentally verified Tiller&apos;s prediction in the eutectic Mg-Mg17Al12 by observing a lamellae-to-rod transition with increasing growth rate where the phase-volume ratio was approximately 2.3:1. However, Hunt and chilton9 more recently unidirec-tionally solidified over a wide range of growth velocities six different eutectic systems with phase-volume ratios between 12:l and 2.7:1 and observed no lamellae-to-rod transition. chadwickl0 has proposed that the change in micromorphology in some eutectic alloys is due entirely to the presence of impurities and further states that the lamellar structure is the characteristic structure of pure eutectic alloys even when the phase-volume ratio is as great as 12:l. Kraft11,12 has shown that the parallel lamellae in certain eutectic alloys assume a unique crystallographic relationship during unidirectional growth. This preferred crystallography may be developed

Bor flotation tailings are very interesting from two reasons: first, is having due value presently, and second represent serious pollutant into this region of Balkan. This paper is only one small part of investigation about processing of valuable minerals from tailings, and desulphurization of this biggest pollutant in the same time, by refloating. The main objective of this work is to pay attention on this problem for resolve greatest environ-mental problem of Serbia and Balkan in the nearly future. Bor is potential regional risk spot, since that failure of its tailings dams would release high amounts of toxic materials that would reach the Danube River. The basic goal of this experimental investigation was finding some possibility for flotation tailings treatment by classical froth flotation. In order was obtained material effect through copper recovery, and environmental protection by moving the rest of reprocessing into the safe place. The work present obtained results of laboratory tests in two laboratories: laboratory of mineral and recycling technology at the faculty in Bor, and laboratory of department of mineral processing of ITNMS in Belgrade.

Of the 345 km long Taiwan High Speed Rail Project, connecting the cities of Taipeiand Kaohsiung, the 23 km alignment on Contract C230 required the construction of5755 m of shallow mined tunnels ranging from 137 m to 1285 m in length. All nine of these tunnels were mined using NATM methodology. On September 6, 2002, a collapse occurred in Tunnel T08 that affected approximately 50 m of tunnel. There was little warning. However, the crew was evacuated approximately 45 minutes prior to failure and thus, no injuries or loss of equipment. This paper will discuss the mining methods, jet grouting ground support, and the instrumentation selected for the rehabilitation and monitoring of the tunnel.

The paper describes a technique that has been developed by the Health and Safety Executive (USE) to make an assessment of the effectiveness of Health and Safety (H and S) management at complex sites. The paper then describes how the technique was adapted and used for the first time at a large coal mine. The results highlighted certain deficiencies in the safety management system, allowing directed advice to he given to management.

Laboratory measurements by the Bureau of Mines indicate that failure in dry rock specimens measuring approximately 13 cm in length is preceded by tilt anomalies lasting a few milliseconds. The tilt behavior is qualitatively similar to that reported to precede earthquakes. Test results suggest that the time duration of this tilt anomaly for laboratory specimens of this length is independent of rock type, in agreement with theoretical predictions and other experimental data on rock failures including earthquakes.

"The exorbitant price of the land in the metropolis has restricted the horizontal expansion and compelled the owners, the developers and the engineers to opt for vertical expansion. This has resulted in the construction of high rises by extending floors of the existing buildings and developing the new ones for which deep excavation is a must. The multistoried buildings up to a certain height can be founded on shallow depth if the soil beneath can withstand the load. If not, the soil can be stabilized by the latest improvement technology to change the properties of soil to cater the desired load of the superstructures. By such practice the cost and time of completion of the substructures can be reduced in comparison to the substructures needed for deep excavation.The necessity of deep excavation cannot be ignored to create housings, underground parking lots and the other public amenities for the urban migrants in the metropolis.Although most of the metropolis have underground mapping the developers, before starting excavation should be hundred percent sure about the alignment and depth of the utilities so that the excavators do not snap the same to bring cut in water supply, power lines, telephone lines etc, resulting in hue and cry in the neighborhoods of the metropolis due to no availability of the essential services The building/structures coming on the influence zones of the deep excavation should be monitored in all sequences of excavations. In case of building underground corridors for rail or road through open deep excavation under a traffic road the developers, before commencing excavation should shift/divert the dry and wet utilities coming on the way of excavation to suitable locations. The surface traffic need to be diverted either temporarily to an adjacent alternative road or allowed to pass over a decking built over the trench of excavation for the affected length of construction. The soil support system is necessary longitudinally on the two sides covering the width of trench for building corridors. In case of building substructures of flyovers built at different plots along the alignment of the flyover or a multistoried complex built at an isolated plot, the soil support system would be necessary on all the sides covering the plot of construction.The material of construction of soil support depends on the depth, type of soil and the type of permanent structure to be developed. Probable geo-hazards inviting casualties in the deep excavation projects occur due to caving of soil, leakage of wet utilities, seepage through honey comb concrete surfaces, failure of pump used for dewatering etc. A detailed comprehensive planning, management and determination of the project authority is essential for marginalizing the casualties. These prevent unforeseen expenditure in mitigation and help to control the time and the cost over run of overall project. The engineer at site should be more a professional manager than an engineer at site. He should be conversant with the safety and environment rules and regulations applicable to deep underground projects."

TEACHING engineering students how to write and speak effectively -is one of the greatest problems facing the technical schools today. No phase of engineering education has received more criticism, and rightly so, for the criticism is justified. Year after year we continue to graduate men that are indifferent to the use of a tool they will need every day of their lives. Our young engineers cannot write a clear, concise report, and their business letters are a disgrace to the profession that takes pride in precision. The problem is not new. The remark ascribed to Sir James Barrie, that "The man of science appears to be the only man who has something to say, just now-and the only man who does not know how to say it" is as uncomfortably true today as it was thirty years ago. The records of meetings of engineering educators and the transactions of the engineering societies show that the inability of the engineer to communicate his ideas has been discussed for years. Engineering educators, prodded by industry, have recognized that the problem exists, but they have not solved it. Instead they continue to expose the student to composition and rhetoric, hustle him through English and American literature, and then blame his high school because he does not know enough English grammar to write a clear sentence. We must face the fact that the graduate is not going to reflect on the high school, but on his college. If the high school has shirked the job, the responsibility for correction rests on the faculty of the professional school.

"The feasibility of Dugald River mine was highly sensitive to mining and geotechnical design assumptions, particularly stope dilution and strike length. Following the start of initial mine development in 2012 the project was suspended in 2013 due to concerns over the complex ground conditions and resulting dilution, stope sizes and general mineability. A technical risk mitigation program was undertaken with a key aim to increase the level of confidence in predicting stope dilution.A stope sizing and dilution model was developed that provided a range of stope sizes based on geotechnical conditions and acceptable dilution. The original feasibility used a standard stope size of 25 m height by 25 m span. The new model was used as the foundation for the subsequent updated development plan for Dugald River that reduced much of the previous technical risk through greater confidence in the geotechnical and mining parameters.Several methods to predict stope hanging wall dilution and appropriate stope size have been used at Dugald River that relied on the modified stability graph method. Improvements to the method were identified as more rock mass and mining data became available through the completion of a trial stoping program, increased underground development and a large geotechnical core logging campaign. These improvements not only focused on the technical aspects of the model, but also on creating an easy to use and sustainable process that could be used at multiple stages of mine planning from life-of-mine (LOM) through to final stope design.Several of the main improvements are: understanding stope failure mechanisms and collecting only geological information that is most relevant detailed modelling restricted to the rock mass that could be expected to influence stope behaviour accounting for different stope failure mechanisms with the stability chart method assigning a geotechnical confidence factor to the data making it useful as a mine planning tool with integration into the mine planning process using performance of completed stopes to update and calibrate the model.The model provides recommended hydraulic radius and associated dilution estimates across the ore body. Providing the hydraulic radius allows planning engineers the option to consider single, double and triple lift stoping options suitable to mine scheduling. While the model has been calibrated for conditions at Dugald River the process used to create the model is not site specific and is applicable to other steeply dipping tabular orebodies.CITATION:Hassell, R, de Vries, R, Player, J and Carswell, J F, 2017. The Golden Cross Mine is located on the North Island of New Zealand, at the base of the Coromandel Peninsula, approximately 8 km northwest of Waihi. The project is operated as a Joint Venture with Coeur Gold New Zealand holding 800/0 and Viking Mining Limited with a 20% interest. The past open-pit and underground gold and silver producer has been in the reclamation phase of the operation for approximately 2.5 years and is now nearing completion. Although rehabilitation of the site is a regulatory requirement, the Closure Plan has been enhanced by the ongoing commitment of the Joint Venture to establish a sustainable land use for the site by commissioning engineered facilities designed to last for perpetuity. The Joint Venture identified six significant design features that were key to successful rehabilitation. These were the controlled placement of acid generating waste rock into engineered disposal sites; the design and placement of sealing layers over the waste rock disposal sites; the design and construction of diversion drains; the establishment and management of vegetation to protect the oxygen diffusion layer; a partial capping of the tailings to accelerate consolidation adjacent to the tailings dam embankment, and the implementation of a cyanide recovery circuit to recycle cyanide from the tailings prior to disposal. Another key to success for the project involved genuine consultation with all parties participating in the planning, evaluation, and consenting of the closure process at Golden Cross. The local and regulatory community has been widely represented in the Joint Venture&apos;s operating and closure plans throughout the history of the mine. Participants include: Regional and District Councillors and staff members, professional peer reviewers, environmental groups, local residents of the valley, and Iwi. This overall commitment to the project has resulted in a world-class rehabilitation program for the first modern metal-mine closure in New Zealand and we believe that collectively, the work done at Golden Cross is helping to set a standard for the success of future programs within the extractive industry.

En este trabajo se presenta un sistema autónomo para remoción de plomo de efluentes mineros con monitoreo remoto, cuyo sistema opera a base de un novedoso material adsorbente, que se presenta en este estudio. Este material, obtenido a partir de arena y grafito, es estable, escalable, reproducible, biodegradable y se puede usar para el tratamiento de metales pesados en agua por medio de una red de filtros en boyas. El equipo desarrollado ha logrado remover casi el 99% a niveles de 10 ppm de contaminación de plomo en un rango amplio de niveles de pH, lo cual garantiza su correcto funcionamiento bajo condiciones de campo. Los componentes del sistema se basan en partes recicladas de otros equipos y utilizan energía solar para su funcionamiento continuo. Asimismo, el equipo contará con un sistema de monitoreo a control remoto, para que el usuario pueda registrar los niveles de plomo a la salida de la red de filtros.

THE elastic, earthwaves produced naturally by earthquakes -have been used for a long time as evidence from&apos; which to draw conclusions in regard to the constitution of the interior and crust of the earth. The elastic earthwaves produced artificially by occasional explosions and recorded by seismological .observatories were used to draw conclusions regarding the-geology of the intervening area. Intentionally produced elastic earthwaves in the past five years have come to be used extensively in the investigation of very local geologic structure. The seismic method of working geologic structure, which makes use of artificially controlled explosions and the resulting earthwaves, has developed almost `clairvoyant power in handling certain geologic situations, and in the discovery of salt domes in the Gulf Coastal: Plain region of Texas and Louisiana has &apos;scored the, most brilliant success.

In 1900, placer gold was discovered on the beach of Nome, AK on the southern coastline of Alaska&apos;s Seward Peninsula (Garnett, 1991). The site is about 800 km (500 miles) from Anchorage. Nome is connected to Anchorage only by air (daily) and by sea (summer). Total onshore placer gold production from Nome&apos;s immediate vicinity was more than 155.5 t (5 million oz). Alaska Gold Co, has continued to produce gold onshore with, until recently, two bucketladder dredges, each of 255-L (9-cu ft) bucket capacity. Small-scale marine dredging for gold has been at- tempted several times this century (Garnett, 1991). Western Gold Exploration and Mining Co. Ltd. Partnership (WestGold) is the only company to have been successful in achieving a significant offshore production. The Nome bucketladder-dredging operation from 1986 to 1990 constituted a unique marine-mining experience in the United States. \Inspiration Gold Inc., WestGold&apos;s predecessor, acquired six offshore leases in 1985. The total lease area of 87 km2 (21,551 acres) extended from the coastline to the 4.8-km (3-mile) offshore limit (Fig. 1). Those leases al- ready had been partially explored. Drilling was conducted off the shorefast winter sea ice. Therefore, it was rarely more than 1.6 km (1 mile) from the shore or in water deeper than about 9 m (30 ft). In 1985, estimated reserves comprised of a 5-m (17-ft) vertical thickness of sediments below 6.3 m (20 ft) of water. This meant a mean digging depth below the mean sea level (msl) of 11.3 m (37 ft). It was thought that the offshore Nome deposit possessed a feature that is common with many terrestrial gold placers - the secret of profitable exploitation of the marine deposit lay in maximizing the dredge throughput to minimize the unit costs. The inability of the project to withstand the prohibitively high cost of a new dredge was recognized. So Inspiration Gold purchased a used unit. This was the world&apos;s largest ocean- going bucketladder dredge (Fig. 2). Binzn was an 850-L (30 cu ft) bucket capacity dredge that was lying idle in Singapore. Originally constructed in the Jurong shipyard of Singapore in 1979, Bima was designed by Mining and Transport Engineering, a subsidiary of IHC Holland. Billiton Marine used the dredge for tin production at Pulau Tujuh in Indonesia (Dieperink, 1978) before it was laid up in mid-1985. Bima underwent a nine-week refit before departing Singapore on June 4,1986, with 800-t (880-st ) of deck cargo. It was dry-towed for 32 days to Alaska. A slower, less expensive, wet-tow at the authorized 5.5 kmthr (3 knots/hour) would have delayed the dredge&apos;s arrival in Alaska untl almost the onset of winter. The 13,000-km (8,100-mile) voyage was made on the deck of Smit Lloyd&apos;s "Giant-4" submersible barge towed by its 7.8- MW (10,500-hp) tugboat. The first season&apos;s dredging revealed several major shortcomings in Bima. Further repairs and modifications were undertaken at Tacoma, WA. The dredge returned to Nome for the June start of the 1987 summer dredging season. The refitted Bima worked offshore at Nome from 1987 to 1990. It produced 3.67 t (118,078 oz) of gold at an average recovered grade of 824 mg/m3 (0.0204 oz/cu yd). In 1991, the dredge was dismantled and sold.

Hybrid composites are fabricated by adding two reinforcements into matrix materials so that the expected excellent properties can be achieved through the combined advantages of short fibers, and different size particles (micron or submicron), which provide a high degree of design freedom. In this paper, hybrid preforms were produced with the different size reinforcement of the Al2O3 particles and short fibers. The Al-Si alloy-based hybrid composites were fabricated by preform-squeezing casting route. The structure and performance of composite materials were studied with the Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The results show that the reinforcements, both particles and fibers, distribute homogeneously in the matrix materials, and the properties of composites are found to improve in comparison with the matrix Al-Si alloy.
