"Electrochemical studies of metal sulfides in connection with their floatability are discussed. According Frumkin, sorption of electroneutral organic substances has a maximum near the potential of zero charge. This idea initiated attempts of application of electrochemical methods for the controlling of organic collector sorption and mineral flotation. The lecture reviews results of electrochemical studies of the processes taking place during sulfide flotation: redox-state of mineral surfaces and xanthate solutions, xanthate sorption and hydrophobic layer composition, surface wettability and flotation recovery of sulfide minerals. Redox-transitions of minerals, transport of ions and charging of mineral surfaces, electroreduction of dissolved oxygen and accompanying processes of oxidation of minerals and reagents-collectors, - all these matters became the subjects of detailed research. Cyclic voltammetry, rotating disk electrodes, spectro-electrochemical techniques and other modern experimental methods now routinely accompany studies of mineral processing. Relatively new electroanalytical techniques like the voltammetry of mineral particles immobilised on electrodes using polymeric binders have become extremely useful for studying weakly conductive minerals and dispersed flotation products. Full discussion of electrochemical studies of metal sulfides in relation to mineral processing must include bioelectrochemistry and electrocatalysis which open exceptional possibilities for selective leaching of gold and non-ferrous metals. At this time, the paper focuses on the sulfide flotation as a potential-dependent process; the problem of oxygen and its influence on the sulfide flotation; the electrochemical aspects of xanthate oxidation and sorption; theory of suspended electrodes as applied to the mineral slurries and experimental study of the effect of electrochemical pretreatment of flotation pulps."

A complete list of permissible mining equipment, rescue apparatus and gas masks tested prior to July 1, 1928, was published in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 60772. The present list includes practically all equipment tested and, approved by the Bureau, up to and including Jan. 1, 1929. It covers electric air compressors, coal drills, mining machines, loading machines, conveyors, mine pumps, room hoists, mine telephones, rock-dusting machines, switches, electric cap lamps, flame safety lamps, electric hand and trip lamps, flash lamps, methane indicators and detectors, blasting units, storage barrery locomotives, tandem locomotives, power trucks, concrete mixers, self-contained oxygen breathing apparatus and gas masks. The system under which those devices were tested permits the manufacturer, after his equipment has passed certain tests prescribed by the Bureau of Mines, to mark his equipment with a seal shoring that it has been "approved" by the Bureau. These tests are designed to insure that the equipment has the minimum requirements for safety in use. The only object of the Bureau in making such tests and pub- lishing lists of permissible equirment is to safeguard the lives of workers and to help lesson the hazards of mining.

Direct platinum carbon replicas have been used to study substrates prior to growth and after initial nu-cleation of the layer. Replicas have been directly stripped and correlations have been made with other replica techniques. Mechanically polished substrates are very flat with occasional areas of "dirt", which is apparently silicon. When such substrates are etched in hydrochloric acid gas, scratches and hexagonal defects (thought to be polishing compound) are revealed, together with areas of apparent redeposition. Chemically polished substrates are much less flat although much more homogeneous in appearance. Heat treat)nents have no effect. Nuclei deposited on these surfaces, using a normal silicon tetrachloride system, have been examined. Nuclei on mechanically polished subsrates occur in random areas only, whereas on chemically polished surfaces they are more uniformly distributed. THE interest in the study of thin films and now their rapidly expanding use in many fields has increased over a period of years. Much of this current interest, particularly in the field of single-crystal or epitaxial thin films, has derived its stimulus not only from possibilities for application but also from fundamental electron-microscope studies which have indicated the manner of growth of such layers from the initial nuclei.1-5 Previous work involving study of growth processes may be divided into three categories. First, vacuum deposition, primarily of metals, on a variety of substrates has been studied by electron microscopy and electron-diffraction techniques. These have shown the three-dimensional aspect of nucleation and the remarkable liquidlike behavior of the growing nuclei which coalesce to form a complete layer. More recently this work has been expanded in two ways: by growth inside the electron microscope this has obvious advantages for kinetic studies; and by growth in ultrahigh vacuum—much of this work has been done on semiconductors.8-11 It is of interest to note that metals, specifically gold deposited on rock salt, will form only polycrystalline layers in ultrahigh vacuum unless the substrate surface is contaminated.12 In general the mode of growth for vacuum-deposited semiconductor films is the same as that for metal films. The second method of growth that has been studied is that of electrodeposition.13,14 The little that has been published suggests that the mode of growth is similar to the vacuum case, except that irregularities may perturb the electric field and disturb the growth process. The third and last primary method of growing epitaxial layers is by use of chemical methods. These techniques have generated much interest and much has been published on them. Considerable electron-microscope work has been done on the defects in the layers; however comparatively little work has been undertaken on the initial nucleation and early stages of growth. Confining ourselves now exclusively to the case of silicon, Charig et a1.15 have considered the growth of silicon on silicon substrates by hydrogen reduction of trichlorosilane, and studied the films by means of replica and transmission techniques. Subsequently they have studied the same system for growth on quartz,16 and with the addition of pyrolysis of silane on quartz and alumina.17 Also Manasevit el al. have studied deposits using silane and silicon tetrachloride on sapphire.18-14 Finally, in this volume studies of deposition on beryllia and sapphire are reported. Although Revesz and Evans20 have examined complete layers, grown by means of the widely used silicon tetrachloride reaction, no detailed examination similar to that published by Charig and Joyce21 for the trichlorosilane system has been given. Therefore this investigation has examined substrate surfaces prior to growth and then nucleation on these surfaces for the silicon tetrachloride system. EXPERIMENTAL In this work the surfaces have been studied by means of standard replica techniques. "In the 1960’s, when large flotation machines appeared on the market, this was a part of a world-wide trend towards the use of ever larger machine units.One factor that has played a decisive part in this development is the increased of the amounts of ore that have to be handled as the exploitation of successively poorer ores becomes necessary. The advancing application of instrumentation and automation has worked in the same direction.In 1970, a working group was set up within Outokumpu Oy, for the purpose of flotation machine development. The principal task of this group was to be the design and development of- a new type of rotor of increased efficiency, especially for the dispersion of large amounts of air- a mechanical-pneumatic flotation machine of substantially larger size that existing plant.This development project required an extensive program of theoretical investigation and experimental studies at several concentration plants of the company.The commonest flotation machine presently used in the concentration plants of Outokumpu Oy is the VK-3. It is of the mechanical-pneumatic type, and the volume of its cell tanks is 2.5 m3 per shaft. This machine was developed within the company, and its first development phase i s represented by the OKKO 3, built for the Kotalahti concentrator in 1959. It was, in its time, comparable in volume to the largest machines that were then in use anywhere in the world."

"Coal-fired electrical power generation plants produce 56% of all the electricity in the U.S., burning approximately 860 million tons of coal annually. This results in the production of 58 million tons of fly-ash; 19 million tons of bottom ash and boiler slag, and 23 million tons of desulfurization sludge.s annually. These are a considerable disposal problem, and it would therefore be very valuable to be able to sell these residues and by-products as useful materials, rather than paying to dispose of them in landfills. However, utilization rates are currently very low, below 32% even for the most thoroughly commercialized combustion byproduct (fly-ash). This poor utilization rate is a result of the high impurity content of combustion byproducts, which makes them unsuitable for existing markets.Mineral processing techniques are useful for upgrading and utilizing combustion by-products. Fly-ash can be processed to remove unburned carbon, or utilized as a binder component in ore pelletization and agglomeration processes; bottom ash can be processed to produce certain aggregate grades; CO2 emissions can be sequestered using modified leaching techniques; and many scrubber sludge’s require processing before they can be used for producing gypsum products.The experiments described in this paper were carried out to study the application of mineral processing techniques to upgrading combustion by-products, particularly flue-gas scrubber sludge. A process was developed for upgrading unoxidized Flue-Gas Desulfurization (FGD) sludge’s by removing the primary impurity (unreacted limestone). A combination of hydrocycloning followed by froth flotation reduced the limestone concentration to as little as 1.7%, while recovering 66% of the sludge weight as a clean product. The recovered limestone was sufficiently concentrated that it could be recycled to the scrubber for more complete utilization."

HIGH rock and surface temperatures combined H with small deep shafts create a difficult ventilation problem. At the Magma operation in Superior, Ariz., booster fans take air off the bottom levels, directing it first through cooling coils and then through the working places and out to the exhaust shafts. All air drawn from the intake shafts below the 3400 level is cooled before it goes to the stoping areas. Most of the ore mined at Magma has come from steep-dipping vein deposits developed for a maximum distance of 9000 ft along the strike of the vein. At present approximately one third of the tonnage is coming from a new section of the mine where the ore occurs as replacement deposits along a favorable horizon in limestone beds. The deepest mining level is now the 4800.

Utah Power and Light Company's Deer Creek Mine had been developed to a point where mine ventilation efficiency had declined to an unacceptable level. Problems identified were ventilation of inactive areas, excessive leakage, and restrictions in the return and intake air ways. Mine management implemented an intensive mine ventilation improvement program to alleviate future problems with respirable dust in the working sections and diesel equipment emissions. Program objectives included sealing of inactive areas of the mine, rehabilitation of high resistance areas, and construction of additional intake and return aircourses. Applications of computer modeling techniques are used to predict the effects of ventilation changes and improvements. Improvements are then prioritized to achieve the largest efficiency increases first. Actual real time assessment of the mine environment and ventilation changes are accomplished with a mine wide monitoring computer system. The Deer Creek ventilation improvement program has more than doubled the ventilating efficiency of the mine.

MUCH attention has been directed to mine-air flow in recent years, more especially in Great Britian where there is frequent reference to a theory of fluid flow developed by English engineers. Briefly stated, this theory is that for similar passages of the same relative roughness, in which fluid flow occurs, the conditions of flow are exactly the same for equal values of the product W D V, where W = density of the fluid, D = diameter of the passage through which flow occurs, V = mean velocity of flow, and m = absolute viscosity of the fluid flowing. This, the "Reynolds Criterion" of fluid flow, had its origin in the work of Prof. Osborne Reynolds' more than 40 years ago. Later, Lord Rayleigh amplified the theory2 which has been conclusively proved for small pipes by the experiments of Stanton and Pannel3 over a large flow range, and by Lacey4 over a somewhat more limited range. Concordant results on small pipes have also been obtained by numerous other investigators with single fluids over more or less limited ranges of flow. According to this theory results in one medium, such as water, are immediately applicable to another, such as air; and experimental results on models are (theoretically, at least) applicable to full-scale designs. This is of great importance in aeronautics and can be of considerable value in mine ventilation research. Hodgson, in a recent paper,5 has outlined the application of this theory to mine-air flow and recent English experiments' on the resistance of a timbered mine airway have been expressed in this form.

FLOTATION of sulphide minerals and native metals is no longer a practical difficulty. The underlying scientific principles of the method, although not explored in anything like complete detail, have been formulated with sufficient breadth so that the direction of attack on any specific case is clearly indicated. It has been known since the earliest clays of flotation that certain of the nonsulphide nonmetal minerals-e.g., sulphur and graphite-would respond to flotation by oils as sulphides do; therefore they have been grouped with sulphides in many patents. But since the development of the chemical theory of collection,1,2,3 this similarity in action has been one of the facts cited in disproof of the theory by opponents of the hypothesis.4,5,6 Air levitation? of certain oxidized minerals, both metalliferous? and nonmetalliferous, and separa-tion thereby from other oxidized minerals, is a recent development in practice, although the discovery of the method dates back 17 years.7 This paper presents evidence that the principles underlying the air levita-tion of the nonsulphide nonmetal minerals are the same as those utilized in the flotation of the sulphides and native metals. It will be apparent immediately to anyone with knowledge of mineral concentration that separation of air-levitated minerals in water from minerals not so levitated is a simple matter of water-gravity concentra-tion, the separating device employed depending solely upon the size of the particles treated and the buoyancy differences effected by the levita-tion, The usual separating means employed are: (1) a flotation machine for fine, slimy and for well aerated granular material; (2) shaking tables for granular less aerated material.

During the initial nine-year deple-tion of the McKamie-Patton pool gas-condensate reservoir, the pressure behavior and fluid analyses indicated pressure maintenance by gas injection would be attractive relative to continued pressure depletion. As a result, a gas cycling program was inaugurated in Aug., 1949, which has since maintained reservoir pressure. In order to evaluate the benefits of this program, the recoveries for natural depletion and for cycling followed by blowdown were determined by calculating the fractional balance of the molar quantities of vapor and liquid remaining in the reservoir and produced at the surface for various stages of depletion. The results of the investigation show theoretical ultimate recovery due to the cycling program will be 42 per cent greater than would be realized under pressure depletion type operation. INTRODUCTION The benefits of gas injection pressure maintenance programs in condensate reservoirs have been recognized and qualitatively described in several papers1-8 during the past 15 years. Some of these papers also describe methods for calculating the increased recovery realized from cycling; however, as a rule, hypothetical reservoirs were used as examples".'.. This paper presents an evaluation of the pressure maintenance program for the McKamie-Patton condensate reservoir and includes a description of the fractional balance method employed to determine the benefits. Reservoir Development and Characteristics The McKamie-Patton pool, Lafayette County, Ark., was opened in June, 1940, with production obtained from the oolitic Smackover lime at a depth of approximately 9,300 ft. The structure is an anticline 8 miles long by 1 to 2 miles wide, and is one of many productive Smackover structures in Southern Arkansas. Of predominant importance is the condensate-bearing gas cap portion of the reservoir, which covers approximately 4,000 acres, attains a maximum thickness of some 200 ft, and has an average thickness of 90 ft. Development of the cap was accomplished with 21 wells drilled on 160 acre spacing. An isopach map of the cap is shown in Fig. 1. In addition, an oil rim is present along most of the periphery of the pool. Production practice includes field separation of black oil, and a high pressure gathering system which carries total well stream from gas cap wells to a plant where condensate is separated and the gas is processed for recovery of natural gasoline, butane, and propane. Since the gas contains appreciable hydrogen sulfide, it is removed by amine contact, after which free sulfur is produced by the Claus process. Core analyses from 1,767 gas cap formation samples averaged 14.2 per cent porosity and 379 md dry air permeability. Connate water was restored on seven samples of gas cap rock by air-brine capillary techniques, from which the interpreted water saturation averaged 28.17 per cent. During the early life of the field, it was believed the recovery mechanism, based on several of the other regional Smackover reservoirs, might be a natural water drive. However, subsequent production and pressure history revealed that the gas cap would not be produced by water drive, but would behave as a closed reservoir. The Royal Decree of September 15, 1919, coordinates the provisions of the Law of June 5, 1911, with those of the Laws of April 21, 1810, of May 2, 1837, and of July 8, 1865, that have remained in force, as well as with certain articles of the Law of September 1, 1913, which revisad the system of taxation. The revised code has been brought together in one volume.3 All citations in this abstract refer to the coordinating Royal Decree of September 15, 1919, unless it is otherwise specifically indicated.

Abstract-The late Archean Pipestone Lake anorthosite complex (PLAC) is a 0.9 x 17 km sill-like layered intrusion that is part of a suite of coeval megacrystic anorthosite bodies in the Cross Lake region, northwestern Superior Province. Exploration for Ti-V-Fe oxide mineralization and concurrent geological investigations have contributed to a greater understanding of the lithostratigraphy of the PLAC and its oxide mineralization. Mapping and drill core studies have established a laterally continuous igneous stratigraphy comprising six leucogabbro/anorthosite zones and three melagabbro/gabbro zones. Field evidence, including disrupted blocks of layered units, scour contacts, and size-graded and modally-graded layering, suggests younging towards both the northern and the central parts of the complex. A decrease in the anorthite content of the feldspars from An75 in the south to An30 in the north suggests that the magmas become more evolved to the north. Macrorhythmic layering and gross morphological features suggest that the PLAC crystallized from four major influxes of geochemically similar basaltic magmas. The paucity of magmatic erosional features in the PLAC indicates that layering developed in a relatively static magma chamber, so that in-situ crystallization processes are required to account for the observed petrologic diversity. Drilling has confirmed that a significant Ti- V-Fe resource is contained in two of the four discrete mineralized subzones in the PLAC. Textural evidence and the stratiform nature of the oxide-enriched subzones are consistent with a magmatic origin for the oxide mineralization.

Rod Mill Grinding is an important and fundamental step of the concentrating process in Marcona Mining Company's plants at San Nicolas Bay, Peru. This Paper summarizes experience in regard to consumption and specifications of grinding rods based on twelve years operation of the grinding circuits. Marcona operates a Plant complex producing 10 million tons per year of beneficiated iron ore products including pellets, sinter feed concentrates, high grade concentrates as slurry and filter cake. Processing capacity is 15 million tons per crude ore per year of which 13 million are around in rod mills. A continuous testing program was carried out over the years. Initial studies of daily production operations gave indications of poor grinding rates in relation to mill size and power consumption, with a high rate of broken liners and rods. The broken nieces of rod were not automatically expelled and further interfered with grinding efficiency, while replacement of liners caused unwarranted do n tire. Objectives were to improve all phases of the Process by studying the effects of changes in rod diameter, length, alloy constituents, and volume and weight of rod charge.

A process simulation of the conversion of molybdenum disulfide concentrates into molybdenum dioxide via the Looping Sulfide Oxidation process has been performed using HSC 7.1 thermodynamic software. By decoupling molybdenite conversion and molybdenum oxidation, Looping Sulfide Oxidation changes the paradigm by turning molybdenite processing into an energy generator while producing a molybdenum dioxide, which has a lower vapor pressure and lower oxygen content than molybdenum trioxide. The Looping Sulfide Oxidation process selectively produces molybdenum dioxide over molybdenum trioxide. This process uses a stoichiometric mixture of oxygen and molybdenum trioxide as oxidants in the conversion of the molybdenum sulfide to the molybdenum oxide. The model simulates the two reactor scheme required by Looping Sulfide Oxidation and incorporates thermodynamic equilibrium simulations performed in FactSage 6.3.1 thermodynamic software. Energy capture is also maximized with heat exchanger systems to transfer heat released in reactions to preheat air.

Manganese silver ores are well known to be refractory towards cyanidation. Various processes have been suggested for improving the amenability of these ores. A sulfurous acid pre-leach is one such process. This paper traces the development and implementation of the sulfurous acid pre-leach process for the retreatment of manganese silver tailings at Tonopah, Nevada. An account of the test work program is presented, followed by a description of the operating plant and specimen metallurgical performance. The paper also summarizes the history of the Tonopah tailings, their mineralogy and makes reference to previous application of the sulfurous acid pre-leach process.

Placer Dome, US operates the Bald Mountain Mine. The Bald Mountain Mine is a surface operation located in remote northwestern White Pine County in east-central Nevada, approximately midway between Elko and Ely. The mine is in the Newark Valley along the southwestern flank of Bald Mountain a part of the Ruby Mountain range, at an approximate elevation of 7,500 ft (2,286 m). The geology at the Bald Mountain Mine is highly altered, both mineralogically, and structurally. Highwall stability and control have long been an issue at the operation, due largely to the varying geologic conditions. In some blasts as many as seven distinct geologic unconformities exist. These unconformities affect both final high wall integrities, as well as blast fragmentation characteristics. A 60 million ton (54.5 million tonnes) layback expansion of the existing “Top Pit” as well as development of a new satellite pit, “Sage Flats”, is being undertaken. Design final highwall pit slopes have been steepened from the traditional 47º to 55º in order to reduce overall ore-to-waste ratios, thereby improving economic viability for the expansion over the 4.5 year life of the project. With the increased usage of electronic detonators throughout the mining industry, mine operations staff, as well as representatives from the mines explosive supplier felt that an evaluation program incorporating electronic detonators would be warranted. The areas of focus for this evaluation would be resultant highwall pre-split integrities, peak particle velocity measurements (both near field and far field), frequency measurements, loader productivity, and visual interpretation of the results. The mine incorporates 25 ft (7.6 m) benches and uses separate trim blasts in conjunction with production blasts in order to reduce blast effects along final highwalls. Hole diameters in production blasts are 7? ” (200 mm). Typical production blast patterns are 18 ft x 18 ft (5.5 m x 5.5 m), drilled in a square pattern configuration. Shot sizes vary greatly, ranging from 200 holes to as many as 800. Bulk low percentage ANFO/emulsion blends are utilized as the redominant blasting agent. "The human history is characterized by social development based on mineral and energy resources, and many conflicts to take the resources by power. This is shown by not only world wars but also many local conflicts as well as international supremacy.IntroductionThe world population after B. C. 10000, which is summarized in several papers, is approximated by four straight lines on a semilogarithmic diagram as shown in Figure 1 [l]. The annual rates of increasing are 0.0041, 0.071, 0.53, and 1.85 % from the old and young periods. The boundaries among four periods are approximately B. C. 4600, AD. 1670, and 1930. The start of the second period seems to correspond to the beginning of agriculture and cattle breeding. Precisely speaking, the usage of natural energy resources such as woods and domestic animals already began, but is inferred to have become common after the age. The third and fourth periods are characterized by the common usage of coal and oil, respectivety. Not only energy resources but also mineral resources including gold, copper, iron and others are also important for the human history.Mineral and energy resources have supported the development of the .human civilization, and have caused many conflicts because of this reason. Every day newspapers report conflicts, such as Chechnya, East Timor and Ache. We can easily point out the facts that the conflicts closely relate to mineral and energy resources. Groznyj, Capital of Chechnya, is located on the western margin of Caspian oil field. Many mineral deposits occur in Kavkaz Mountains running south of Chechnya. Subsea oil fields occur in Timor Gap located between East Timor and Australia. Ache is also one of oil fields in Indonesia. It is very difficult to state present conflicts independently of a political view of point. For this reason let us try to historically review the relation between mineral and energy resources and international domination and conflicts [2] based on many papers [3]."

"Film of LlCoO2 as cathode material for rechargeable lithium microbatteries has been fabricated on the platinum metal substrate by electrochemical-hydrothermal method in concentrated LiOH solution at 200 °C as Soft Solution-Processing. The film fabrication has been understood in terms of dissolution of cobalt metal powders and subsequent oxidative deposition on the substrate. The film structure was characterized using scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction analysis; X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and micro-Raman spectroscopy.IntroductionRapid growth of wireless communications and emerging integrated optoelectronic circuits caused the miniaturization· cif electronic devices, thus the demand for high energy density microbatteries as a power source for the microelectronics increases. In this regard, all solid-state lithium microbatteries including LiCoO2 and LlMn2O 4 [l-4], the most promising intercalation cathode material, have been developed. However, major difficulty of .fabrication of a lithium microbattery arose from the preparation of cathode film, according to a· recent report on Rare Metal News [5]. Although many attempts have been made to deposit the cathode films, all those methods are mostly chemical vapor deposiiton (CVD), various evaporation, sputtering techniques and spray pyrolysis. These methods require preparation of bulk cathode materials cir its precursor, then deposition with complicated instruments including high· vacuum system, and even postsynthesis annealing to obtain desire electrochemical 'properties. It is clear that all of these techniques are neither economic nor environmentally friendly. Compared to those methods, film form.ation from an aqueous solution is thought to be simpler and more economical, and requires much· less energy consumption. Our .group has demonstrated the utility of Soft SolutionProcessing [6,7], which is defined as environmentally friendly processing using (aqueous) solutions, to produce films of a variety of functional solid materials. According to the Pourvaix's diagram [8], some metal can be dissolved in an alkaline solution and consequently combined with hydroxyl group or oxygen anion forming metalate or metalite. Cobalt also seemed to form cobaltite, HCoOi in strong alkaline solution in the Pourvaix's pH-potential diagram. Based on this information, it was expected that LiCoO2 could be prepared using the cobalt metal in Li OH solution by Soft Solution-Processing. Recently, we reported the successful single step fabrication of electrochemically active LlCoO2 films on the cobalt metal substrate by hydrothermal methods without any post-synthesis annealing as Soft SolutionProcessing [9,10]. Film formation mechanism could be elucidated by the following evidences. . As expected from Pourvaix's diagram, cobalt metal was dissolved in concentrated LiOH solution forming dissolved cobalt species which was detected by an observation of absorption band in UV-VIS absorption spectrum [10]. Thus the reaction was assumed to be started from dissolution. Time dependent potential of Co electrode exhibited only one-step evolution with 0.6 eV from Co metal to LiCoO2 [10]. Another strong evidence was the finding of LiCoO2 powder precipitates at the bottom of tetlon beaker after the reaction [11]. Based on those experimental findings, it was understood that film is formed by dissolution-precipitation mechanism [9-11]."

THE John Fritz Medal Board of Award, at its annual meeting on Jan. 21, 1921, awarded its gold medal and diploma to Sir Robert Hadfield for the invention of manganese steel. On June 1, announcement was made that the Board of Award had awarded its gold medal and diploma to Charles Prosper Eughe Schneider for "achievement in metallurgy of iron and steel; for development of ordnance, especially the 75-mm. gun, and for notable patriotic contribution ' to the winning of the war." The award to Sir Robert Hadfield is for the year 1921; the award to Mr. Schneider is for 1922. The latter was made at this time in order that the medal might be presented by the group of American engineers now visiting England and France.*
