The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), through an informal partnership with industry, labor, and the Mine Safety and Health Administration, has developed and tested a new type of instrument known as the personal dust monitor (PDM). The dust monitor is an integral part of the cap lamp that a miner normally carries to work and provides continuous information about the amount of respirable coal mine dust in the breathing zone of that individual. Testing was conducted on 25 prototype instruments in the laboratory to verify the instruments’ accuracy as received from the manufacturer and after a period of underground use. The laboratory testing verified previous work; there is a 95% confidence that the individual PDM measurements were within ±25% of reference measurements. In-mine testing determined the precision, durability, and miner acceptance. Data from the mines showed a field precision of 0.078% relative standard deviation for the PDM and 0.052% for the recognized standard—the coal mine dust personal sampler unit. The PDM had about 90% availability for collecting valid information in over 8,000 hr of underground use. Anecdotal comments by miners indicated that they found the PDM more convenient to wear for sampling than currently used instruments because of the integration of the sampler into the normally worn cap lamp. The means of the instruments’ pre- and postmine accuracy verification test values were statistically equivalent. Additional data were collected to measure the equivalency of the PDM to the U.K. Mining Research Establishment sampler, as required by U.S. law. However, analysis of the data was more complex than originally anticipated because the variance with increasing concentration required use of a more sophisticated statistical model. Explanation of and results from this work will be the subject of a second publication. Under the broad range of test conditions covered in this work, the PDM functioned as well as the current sampler in terms of availability for use, accuracy, precision, and miner acceptance.

Because the Environmental Protection Agency has identified methane as a greenhouse gas, the importance of de gasification through gob wells has become more critical. It has been observed that the degree of methane emission is closely related to the geomechanical characteristics of coal bearing strata, roof, floor, and surrounding coal seams. Monthly production data from 250 gob wells were collected from the Warrior Basin in Alabama, and many interesting correlations were observed between methane production with longwall face width, face advancement rate, number of gob wells in a panel, and geologic columns. Extensive finite element analyses were performed to estimate the characteristics of the emission zone in an attempt to corroborate these findings. This paper describes an investigation for developing correlations between the geomechanical behavior of the methane emission zone with methane production.

Dravo Lime Company has opened a new 290m (940 ft.) deep lime-stone mine near Maysville, Kentucky. As the mine was opened there were many unknowns as to the stress relationships within the rock, and their influence, if any, on the selected mining method. Therefore, a system of overlay geologic and structural maps, borehold extenso-meter measurements, and oriented photography was developed for the purposes of monitoring the internal structural relationships of the rock mass. This paper presents a description of the methods used, the observations made, and the conclusions and recommendations made as a result of the initial monitoring program.

Discussion C. G. Hinds (Member): The climatic chamber at Kloof Gold Mine was built to the design referred to in the paper presented by Professor Wyndham and Dr Strydom. As no suitable underground facilities existed for the acclimatization of labourers at the rate required, mining operations would have been severely restricted had there not been a climatic room timeously built on surface. The climatic room can accommodate 120 labourers per 4-!-hour shift. The standards laid down by the Human Sciences Laboratory were and still are being adhered to as strictly as possible. Through a shortage of European personnel the recommended degree of white supervision could not be adhered to and the use of Bantu assistants with a minimum education of Standard 8 was introduced. This is considered to have met with sufficient success to warrant acceptance as policy. The climatic room was brought into operation on the 1st September, 1967, i.e. two months after stoping at Kloof was commenced. The figures quoted herein therefore pertain to the period between that date and the 31st March, 1969, when the main shaft and the main surface fans were commissioned. The areas worked were sited between 5016 ft and 6 365 ft below surface. Virgin rock temperatures ranged between 92°F and 99°F. Stopes are cleaned by hand lashing. During the 20 months of stoping prior to the commissioning of the main shaft, mining operations at Kloof were effected through the Harvie Watt shaft of the Libanon Gold Mining Company Limited. In this period 10 452 Bantu labourers were acclimatized in the following categories: Experienced workers 7 326 New to the industry 2 086 Re-acclimatized 1 040 It will be noted that during the period, labourers 'new to the industry' averaged 22 per cent of the intake. This percentage fluctuated from time to time and reached 42 per cent. (The present percentage is 60.) The greatest number acclimatized during anyone month occurred in February, 1969 when 1234 Bantu were treated. The greatest number of Bantu acclimatized during any 8-day period was 411. As many as four X 41/2 hour shifts were run in 24 hours. The number of men found to be heat intolerant over the period of 20 months was 33 out of a total 9 412 Bantu. The following tabulation illustrates the history of the build-up of manpower and the climatic conditions under which they worked: The average dip of the reef is 35°. The number of heat stroke and heat exhaustion cases during the period of 20 months under most difficult ventilation conditions was Nil.

"Access to information is a key component for making improvements to any process. This is particularly true for all aspects of the iron mining and steelmaking process. The ability to make rapid control decisions can significantly influence process outcomes, including ensuring product specification, mining quality, transportation limits, upgrade factors, waste bypass and direct shipping, among many others. While traditional laboratory methods provide feedback for such processes, having access to analysis results in real-time can lead to positive reactive and predictive control decisions to be made rapidly, leading to significant improvements throughout the process. Scantech has been designing, manufacturing and supplying technological products to the minerals industry since 2002 to enable the availability of such real-time information to a mine or plant, with the benefits being enjoyed by a wide range of operators. This paper provides a summary of the available technologies used in the iron ore and steel industries, as well as providing case studies of their use in African and Australian iron ore and European steel, as well as a description of the potential benefits of a range of analysis equipment.INTRODUCTION Access to information is critical for any process, and is a fundamental component for making process control decisions. In order to yield effective processing outcomes, it is important for that information to be readily available, preferably as quickly as possible, and to be as accurate as possible. While speed and accuracy are often traded off against each other, there are numerous technologies available in a processing environment that allow for both rapid flow of information and a high level of accuracy. The use of on-belt analysis equipment has a long trusted history of use in a number of mining and processing environments and industries, providing information such as elemental composition and grade of conveyed materials, moisture content, waste proportion and energy information. Australian company Scantech has been a provider of such equipment since 1981, and has become an industry leader in both the supply and development of on-belt analysers across a range of industries."

The area discussed in this report comprises a group of 38 counties lying in the northeast corner of Texas. It covers all, and extends beyond, the borders of what is commonly described as the East Texas Basin. It includes two major oil fields, Van and East Texas; two major gas fields, Bethany and Waskom; and a number of fields, both oil and gas, of lesser importance. All commercial oil production comes from beds of Upper Cretaceous age and almost exclusively from the basal member, the Woodbine sand. Gas is produced from both Upper and Lower Cretaceous beds with the newer production from the older beds. East Texas Field This field continued as in 1932 and 1933 to dominate the drilling and production situation throughout the oil business. A total of 3681 producing wells was completed in this field during 1934. This is an increase of 1215 over the 2466 producers completed during 1933. Total wells

Soon New York City will have a new train station. A tunnel project is under construction to extend Line 7 to a new station that is located near the Jacob K. Javits Con-vention Center. This is also part of the Hudson Yards redevelopment project that is intended to aid redevelop-ment of the west side of Midtown Manhattan around the Long Island Railroad?s Caemmerer Railyard. The station, or ?cavern? as it?s called by those excavating it, will be the portal for that growth. In the city, public transportation means high-rise residential proper-ties will have better access to the business district, and those outside the area will have greater access to event facilities ? two factors that are critical for development investment.

Good morning gentlemen. I'm very pleased to be a part of this fine program for the Society of Mining Engineers. Gypsum, as many of you know, is one of the most unique minerals on earth. The very excellent presentations which you have just witnessed, revealed the geological aspects of gypsum operations. It is not our purpose this morning to pursue this subject further. Instead, we felt you would be interested in some of the uses of gypsum . . . and what the future holds for gypsum products. To help accomplish this, we're going to first show the Gypsum Association's new film, "Shape Of The Future. ' This short movie traces gypsum f ram mines and quarries to its ultimate destination in homes, schools, offices -- in virtually every type of construction. We think you'll be particularly interested in the description of gypsum's fire resistive nature.

In this Bureau of Mines report, a previously developed theory of reverse stratified flow in ventilated duct fires is applied to mine-related ventilation systems that utilize an exhaust fan to supply the forced airflows. The coupling between a fire and the ventilation airflow in a single-entry duct is analyzed to relate the air velocity in the absence of a fire to air velocity during a fire. By combining the derived coupling equations with the results of the previously developed theory of reverse stratified flow, it is possible to calculate critical flow velocities required to prevent reverse stratified flow in the event of a duct fire. The sample calculations shown agree with the few experimental results available from small-scale tunnel fires.

"SynopsisThe last commodities supercycle (2003 to 2011) was characterized by a belief in volume at any cost, where absolute output was deliberately prioritized over productivity considerations. This practice fuelled overoptimistic forecasting and planning, which in turn contributed to the economic crisis that followed. The sudden collapse of commodity prices has resulted in mining companies scrambling to find the right balance between optimizing current operations and preserving sufficient flexibility to grasp future opportunities. The runaway costs of building and operating mines have almost squeezed out profit margins, while lower ore grades are inflating production costs. Mining companies therefore need to look at the business with fresh eyes, and develop strategies to attract equity capital as traditional approaches are simply not working anymore. This is especially so in the context of a dwindling investor base that continues to demand greater returns, despite a significantly lower appetite for risk. This paper revisits the micro-economic concepts and demonstrates how pressure from shareholders to prioritize output contributed to spiralling costs and value destruction. Practical techniques are described to model cost curves to optimize a Mineral Resource endowment and address the need to rightbalance a business and preserve agility.IntroductionHenry Lazenby (2014) for the Mining Weekly writes, ‘Bruised and battered, the global mining industry today is undergoing a sea change. Practices and policies that might have worked wonders in the past are not as relevant today, and new approaches to running profitable mining operations need to be found.’ One significant practice the mining industry had during the last commodities supercycle (2003 to 2011) was chasing volume at any cost; absolute output was deliberately prioritized over productivity considerations (Goldsmith, 2013). The project has shown that it is feasible for a junior company to reopen a narrow vein-style gold mine and successfully take it into production. An intimate understanding of the mineralisation and a flexible approach to mining are crucial, as are stringent cost control and efforts to keep overheads low. The project has confirmed the geological complexity of the Main Lodes, which consist of highly sheared quartz-sulphide infill in strongly sericitised granodiorite. The existence of discrete high-grade zones within the Hangingwall Lodes has also been confirmed. Broad low-grade zones continue to be recognised and require the local application of bulk longhole mining methods. The initial mine plan called for predominantly longhole stoping, but adverse ground conditions have meant that a switch to air-leg mining has produced higher run-of-mine grades. The excess capacity at the processing plant can best be used by batch processing, with its reduced maintenance requirements

"The Lady Loretta lead-zinc deposit in Northwest Queensland, Australia contains an average of 5.9% lead, 17.1% zinc and 97 g/t silver. Ore mineralization is mostly comprised of fairly complex intergrowths of pyrite, sphalerite and galena. Starting in 1998, Noranda Inc., the major joint venture partner of the project, conducted extensive metallurgical test work, which culminated in July - August 2000 in a series of Pilot Plant tests. A common thread to all the metallurgical work has been the deportment of a large portion of silver into non-payable metallurgical products. Average silver distribution from four Pilot Plants shows a distribution of silver in lead concentrate of 28%, whereas silver in zinc concentrate was 49%, and 23% in the final tails.The consistently poor silver recovery as well as the fairly unusual silver distribution, particularly in zinc concentrate, was considered an issue to be thoroughly investigated. A mineralogical plan was devised to determine if these particular metallurgical results were somewhat related to the nature and mode of occurrence of silver carriers. Work was performed to determine discrete silver-bearing minerals and/or silver contained in solid solution in a suite of commonly occurring sulphides. Ore microscopy, SEM methods, Electron Microprobe and Ion Microprobe analyses were all used to answer these questions, and to find the silver carriers, so a metallurgical plan could be devised to improve silver recovery.INTRODUCTIONPotential economic exploitation of the Lady Loretta deposit in Queensland, Australia is driven by revenue derived from zinc and lead flotation concentrates and co-product silver recovery in lead. "The distribution of particle reinforcements and the residual stresses in metal matrix composite are simulated by considering the motion of particles and the solidification of matrix associated with temperature variation in the course of centrifugal casting process. In the analysis, a heat conduction equation including heat generation due to latent heat and also mechanical work as well as heat input from successively accumulated element on the air/metal boundary is solved by the finite element technique. After the movement of particles subjected to the centrifugal force and drag are analyzed, the residual stresses are elucidated by using a unified constitutive equation which can describe the behavior both in liquid and solid states. Results of the simulation are compared with the experimental data, and the validity and utility of the procedure is confirmed.IntroductionProcess simulation of metal matrix composite (MMC) is required to determine the mechanical properties of the materials and the efficient process and conditions of the fabrication. Properties of bonding matrix with reinforcements in the course of the processing, for example, affects the strength of the composite, while the final costs of the productions depends on the efficiency of fabrication. Therefore, the simulation of processing of MMC is prerequisite in order to clarify the mechanism to fabricate the material which has been expected to maintain high mechanical properties and the cost performance.Some techniques of processing MMC[l] have been developed so far. Among them, the centrifugal casting technique [2-5] has many attractive characteristics as processing of the MMC: The centrifugal casting technique makes the reinforcements such as particles or short fibers to be distributed in the radial direction by the centrifugal force acting on reinforcements due to the difference in density between reinforcements and matrix. Since the distribution of reinforcements affect the mechanical properties of MMC, the composite with functionally gradient mechanical properties can be provided by the centrifugal casting technique."

An overview is given of the matte melting process used for the beneficiation of South African platinum group metal (PGM) ores. Most producers use six-electrode furnaces to melt the concentrate and Pierce Smith converters to oxidize excess iron sulphide from the furnace matte. Concentrates from two reef types (the so-called Merensky and UG-2 reefs) dominate the feedstock supply. Concentrate from the Merensky Reef is low in chromium and does not pose significant melting problems. Concentrates from the UG-2reef contain much higher levels of chromium, which results in the formation of chromium-rich spinels during melting. This is attributed to the low solubility of chromium in furnace slag under typical operating conditions (an oxygen partial pressure of 10-8?10-9bar at temperatures of 1550°C to 1600°C). During the converting process, care is needed to avoid excessively oxidizing conditions, which result in cobalt, nickel and copper losses to the slag. High nickel losses result in the formation of Fe2NiO4 (trevorite), which often forms solid solutions with FeCr2O4and Fe3O4. In future, the main challenge in the processing of South African PGM ores will be to cope with ever-increasing levels of chromium in the concentrate. A short-term solution to the problem would be to melt the concentrate under slightly reducing conditions to promote the formation of CrO, which is more soluble in the slag than Cr2O3.A longer-term solution to the problem would be to abandon the current matte-smelting process in favour of an alloy-based process, which would offer total flexibility with respect to the amount of chromium that can be tolerated in the feed. With the burgeoning development of precious metals heap leach mining projects throughout the country regulatory agencies are beginning to take a closer look at the short-and long-term environmental consequences of heap leach mining. This increase in regulatory review is occurring on federal, state and local levels, and is affecting both large- and small-scale mining developments. Small-scale mining developments are receiving especially critical regulatory scrutiny because in the eyes of some regulatory agencies, small developers lack the credibility automatically accorded to major mining companies. This is due in part to a bad image of small miners based upon past environmental problems and permit violations caused by a few, small operators. The proponent of a small mining development thus faces special problems during the project permitting process, and must convince the regulatory authorities of his company's ability and commitment to plan, develop, and decommission a mining operation in compliance with environmental regulations. Not only must the small developer have a thorough understanding of the regulatory requirements affecting his project, he must also devote considerable effort to careful internal planning in order to produce a well organized approach to project permitting. The importance of proper planning cannot be overstated. Project planning is key to convincing the regulatory agencies that the small miner is capable of developing a viable project. More- over, the economics of a small mining project demand permit acquisition at modest cost and in a timely fashion. A well planned permitting effort will thus ensure that permits are received within budget and on schedule. This paper will review the federal, state, and local permitting requirements for heap leach projects, and the variability of these requirements from state to state. The environmental assessment process for projects developed on public lands, and the acquisition of zero- discharge water quality permits, air quality permits, and local special use permits as they apply to small mining developments will be discussed. The paper will conclude with a review of project decommissioning and cyanide neutralization requirements and their implications for small-scale heap leach projects.
