Existing practical laboratory tests for comparative strength determination of commercial explosives consist of the lead block test, the ballistic mortar test, the bubble test etc. These tests are carried out in material with quite different properties compared to rock. The theoretical performance potentials of commercial explosives are traditionally described by weight-strength (WS). Some explosive producers use the Langefors formula for weight-strength calculation, where also the gas volume is considered. Neither the theoretical nor the practical methods for determination of explosive performance such as the above, give good enough prediction of fragmentation and heave in rock blasting. For these reasons a project was started for the purpose of finding a small scale test method which predicts how different explosive parameters affect fragmentation and heave. Small scale tests were carried out by using 50 cm cubical blocks, mainly of concrete, but a few also of rock. All blocks were blasted in a steel cylinder with a diameter of 1.2 meters. The velocity of detonation was monitored, and the velocity of fragments was derived from their time of arrival at the steel wall, which was registered by accelerometers. After blasting all fragments were screened. The charge diameter was 22 mm and the amount of explosive 78 grammes, resulting in a specific charge of 0.62 kg/m3. Explosive properties such as energy, gas, VOD and density were systematically changed.The results presented in this paper show how fragmentation and heave systematically change when the explosive properties like energy, gas, VOD and density are systematically changed. The results from the small scale tests are compared to full scale tests carried out in tunnel blasting, and during summer 1990 also in bench blasting.

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grind-ability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions4 issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor; if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

DURING and after 1949, various groups of British mining engineers came to the Dominion Coal Company, Limited, at Sydney, N .S., to see at first hand the Dosco MINER ( 1). These visits culminated in 1952 with the ordering of four Dosco Miners by the (British) National Coal Board on an experimental basis through their Experimental Expenditure Funds. Others are now on order. The first machine was delivered in February, 1953, and, after slight alterations to suit the different power supply, the machine was made ready to work. Due mainly to the size of the machine, new rules and regulations governing its operation had to be put into effect and it was not until April, 1954, that the machine was put underground. It started to produce in June of that year. The three others were delivered early in 1955. The authors were sent to England by the Dominion Coal Company to install and demonstrate these machines and to work with the Coal Board engineers to- further interest in the machines in the British coal fields .

The investigation of mine shafts and underground workings at Leadville, Colo., was started in May 1946 and recessed in November 3, 1946. Thirty-eight shafts and connecting accessible underground workings, comprising about a third of the accessible shafts in the district, were investigated. The Leadville district, a former important producer of lead and zinc, was considered by the Bureau of Mines to be capable of bolstering 'the waning domestic output of .these important metal. Accordingly, the investigation was initiated for the purpose of. .obtaining more definite data on sulfide and oxide reserves, evidence to justify completion of the Leadville drainage tunnel, representative large samples of the complex oxidized and mixed ores for testing to determine methods, beneficiation factual data to be supplied to property owners in order to stimulate production, and to determine the more favorable areas for development by the Bureau.

"PURPOSE OF REPORTMany bituminous coal-mine officials realize that coal dust presents an ever-present coal-mine explosion hazard, and that persons forced to breathe large quantities of it may be more subject to respiratory infection than persons working in less dusty atmospheres. As an outgrowth of the realization that coal dust should be allayed at its source, many mining companies have expressed the desire to install dust-allaying equipment, and in a number of mines, water or wetting solution is being applied on the cutter bars of mining machines, on mobile loaders, belts or conveyors underground, and tops of mine cars. Spraying equipment also has been installed on dumps to allay dust during dumping operations. Dust-allaying equipment has not been standardized, however, because manufacturers have found that many prospective purchasers of such equipment have different ideas. These manufacturers wish to standardize, so far as feasible, the types and placement of such equipment. Many mine officials, although interested, do not know the best or most effective methods for allaying dust.For a number of years the Bureau of Mines has advocated allaying dust by applying water or, more recently, water modified by a wetting agent on the cutter bar of mining machines and by applying water to loaded and empty mine cars in order to keep as much dust as possible from spilling onto the haulage roads. In recent years this Bureau has also advocated applying water with or without a wetting agent during mechanical loading of coal and during unloading of coal from trackless cars or buggies and from elevating conveyors. It has now become apparent that specific arrangement of pipes, hose, and nozzles should be standardized to at least some extent. It is the purpose of this report, therefore, to give in detail suggested arrangement of dust-allaying equipment in the hope that both manufacturers and mine officials will have available dust-allaying equipment with maximum efficiency to do the desired work."

After a stagnant performance in 1982, gross national product (GNP), industrial production, and employment increased during 1983 in nearly all industrial nations, with the U.S. performance generally leading the uneven worldwide recovery. Real U.S. GNP increased 3.3 percent in 1983 (table I). Although investment in nonresidential structures declined, total nonresidential fixed investment in the United States was up 1.5 percent following a 1982 decrease. The increase in worldwide industrial activity and demand in 1983 put greater pressure on prices in many countries. Prices increased from less than 3 percent in the Federal Republic of Germany, Japan, the Nether-lands, and Switzerland to as much as 10 percent in nearly all the other Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development nations. The annual inflation rate in the United States was 4.3 percent (based on the GNP fixed-weight price index).

The Carson Hill mine of the Carson Hill Gold Mining Corporation is at Melones, Calaveras County, Calif. It is one of the numerous mines on the Mother Lode of California. The property extends for 8,400 feet along the outcrop of that important vein system. The elevation at the haulage level is about 1,000 feet above sea level. "It is well known that froth phase has a controlling influence on the overall flotation performance. Froth recovery is expected to be affected by froth transportation behaviour. The latter has been represented by different volume balance and energy balance based models. In froth transportation models based on a volume balance, the froth phase is divided into different zones. The total froth residence time is the sum of the time spent in each zone and is dependent on the cell geometry, bubble burst rate and the position that bubbles enter into the froth phase. Alternatively, the froth transportation model based on an energy balance treats the froth phase as a block. In this model, froth height above the concentrate lip is being predicted by minimising the energy of the system which is dependent on the froth geometry, froth stability and froth rheology. The froth height can be used to calculate the froth efficiency of delivering mineralized bubbles from the pulp to the concentrate lip. This paper critically analyses the current models of froth transportation in flotation, and examines the limitations of these models. The importance of froth rheology, which is the resistance to the froth flow towards the discharging weir, in determining froth transportation, is also highlighted."

THE members arrived at Ticonderoga, N. Y., at noon, Tuesday, October 15th, and were received by Mr. Cyrus Butler, Chairman of the Local Committee of Arrangements. During the afternoon the works of the American Graphite Company and the Horicon Iron Company were visited under the guidance of Mr. Butler, President of both companies, and of Mr. William Hooper, Superintendent. An excursion was then made, in carriages, to old Fort Ticonderoga, on Lake Champlain, after which the party were driven to the Rogers Rock Hotel, on Lake George. The first session of the Institute was held in the parlor of time hotel on Tuesday evening. Mr. Eckley B. Coxe, President of the Institute, opened the proceedings with the following address: I shall ask your attention, this evening, to a few reflections upon the subject of mining engineering as a profession in the United States, its past, its present, and its future, and its duties and oppor¬tunities with reference to the proper development of our great min¬eral resources. Thirty years ago, there were scarcely any mining engineers in this country, and but few in England, and there were no institutions where young men could be educated for the profession in the Eng¬lish language. France and Germany have been able for about a century to boast of mining schools of a high character, that number among their graduates such men as Humboldt, Weisbach, Rittinger, Combes, and Gruner. Of the few we then had worthy of the name of "mining engi¬neer," some had studied in the continental academies, and others were graduates in the school of practical experience, and had learned their profession in mines and smelting-works. Their work con¬sisted principally in making surveys and maps of mines and mining properties, geological reports, and analyses of ores ; but the mining engineer whom we often meet with now, who has studied chemistry, physics, mineralogy, geology, mechanics, and drawing; who is more or less familiar with machinery and its construction, and with the practical management of mines or smelting-works, and who is an expert in some one branch of his profession, would have been very difficult if not impossible to find in the United States. Our paper attempts to summarize the various approaches used to recover Indium from these by-products. DEVELOPMENTS in Iran currently arousing interest in a considerable portion of the world, particularly on the part. of that country's immediate neighbor on the North and in our own country, an inseparably related to and largely dependent upon the government's attempts to strengthen its economy and improve the standard of living of its people. These efforts are encompassed by provisions of the Seven-Year Development Plan recently enacted and not, in the process of implementation. It is a fine example of what one financially sound but extremely backward and poorly equipped country has undertaken to do on its own account and with its own resources. This Seven-Year Plnil was formally authoriztld by an act of the Iranian Parliament in February 1948. Its stated objects are to carry out such plans for the development of the country and its economy as ail1 raise the standard of livinc: and standard of education of the people, and re- duce the cost of living. A seven-yrar program for carrying out the work within the limits of appropriations was assigned under the law. The total amount to be expended during the seven- year period was fixed at the equivalent of $670 millioil at current rates of exchange.

The Custom Coals advanced coal cleaning plant will be designed with a unique blending of existing and new processes to produce two types of compliance coals: Carefree Coal? and Self-Scrubbing Coal?. Carefree Coal will be produced by cleaning the coal in a proprietary dense media cyclone circuit utilizing fine magnetite to remove up to 90 percent of the pyritic sulfur and correspondingly greatly reduce the ash. While may utilities can achieve full S02 reduction compliance with Carefree Coal, others face higher sulfur reduction requirements due to the higher sulfur content of their existing fuel supplies. For these circumstances, a patented Self-Scrubbing Coal will be produced by taking Carefree Coal and pelletizing limestone-based additives with the finest fraction of the clean coal. These technologies will enable over 150 billion tons of non-compliance U.S. coal reserves to meet compliance requirements.

This paper on mining practice at the Fresnillo silver mines is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of North America. Two classes of ore are produced at Fresnillo. A low-grade oxidized silver ore; end a complex-base sulphide are containing gold, silver, lead, zinc, and copper. This paper is confined to a discussion of operations relating to the production of oxidized silver ores. To date, more than 10 Million tons of this ore rave been mined. The present (June, 1931) daily production is 2,000 tons of ore, and approximately 600 men are employed in the mining operations.

Reliable and accurate furnace bath level data during the melting process is invaluable for good decision making and furnace optimization, while obtaining such information rapidly and safely on a regular basis is of paramount importance. This paper shows how a melting process problem was identified as a concern, how a solution was sought and how a real-time measurement system was tested by simple modification to an existing temperature sampling manipulator. Also how, with furnace power on or off, taking reliable hot heel, fill and running levels could be used to assist melting control, aid decision making and improve safety.

"THE PRELIMINARY EVALUATION of the orebodies was computerized for tonnages and grades on a 20- by 20-ft grid. The evaluation was based on drill-core intersections over 40-ft vertical projections coinciding with the proposed bench intervals, taking the deviations of the drill holes into account. The computer print-outs gave an ore distribution and evaluation bench by bench and indicated the areas of varying mineralization. The two orebodies have a combined length of 2,200 ft. and a maximum width of 600 ft. They strike almost due north, dip about 85 degrees east and rake to the north. The computer print-outs were used to design an open pit with an over-all waste to ore ratio of 2.58:1. At the outset, the waste to ore ratio was 4:1. The pit is tear-drop shaped, with the narrow end to the south, and at the surface is 2,600 ft long by 1,800 ft wide. Ramps are 100 ft wide, with a 10% grade. The south ramp is left-handed, starts at the southeast and will continue to the bottom of the pit. A second ramp on the west and north walls runs from surface to join the south ramp at 7 bench. This ramp will handle the total pit production when part of the south ramp, from 4 bench to surface, is lost due to the underground operation. Over-all wall slopes are 53 degrees, and are laid out to avoid prominent protuberances which could relax and become unstable and potentially dangerous (Fig. 1) ."

It was not many years ago that people would have argued that a coal session did not belong at an International Mining Convention. Historically, steam coal has always been used domestically due to its natural geographic diversity and high transportation expense. Times have changed. With the help of Opec, steam coal has gone international. As opposed to metallurgical coal, whose trade routes have a long history, whose supply sources are more limited and whose market growth is seen by most to be relatively flat, steam coal export forecasts are calling for more than a doubling by 1990 and a quadrupling by the year 2000. Suddenly, one must be familiar with coal mining on a global basis in order to predict which regions will be able to fill these markets.

AT THE Flin Flon plant of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited there are two types of multiple hearth furnaces used in the roasting of sulphides. This pa-per will deal primarily with the wedge-type furnace in the roasting of zinc concentrates. The other furnace, the Nichols-Herroshoff type, is used in the copper smelter and is described in the papers given by (1) J. H. Ambrose in 1935 and (2) R. E. Mast and G. H. Kent in 1954. The design and operation of these roasting furnaces at the present time is essentially the same as given in the write-up in 1954. No at-tempt will be made here to describe these furnaces, except to mention that there are five Nichols-Herreshoff multiple-hearth furnaces, four of which are used to roast a dried mixture of copper concentrate, zinc plant residue, and flux, before this material is fed to the reverberatory furnace.

"Understanding the thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF) behavior of materials plays a significant role in the safety design of critical components used in aerospace and automotive industries, such as engine blocks and cylinder heads, which undergo the cyclic change of temperature and stress. However, the cyclic changes of temperature, stress and strain make it difficult using the traditional testing methods to accurately simulate the TMF process. In the present work, the Gleeble® 3800 system was successfully applied to develop a reliable procedure to measure the TMF behavior of aluminum alloys. The modified setup together with the new designed program allows the Gleeble system to precisely simulate the cyclic profiles of temperature and mechanical strain. The novel procedure includes the calibration and verification of the TMF setup to ensure the test validity with Young’s modulus measurement, multi-cycle measurement of the thermal strain and zero stress adjustment followed by online monitoring the TMF cycles. The results of the TMF testing of an AA6061 alloy under cyclic temperatures (60–300°C) and various strain amplitudes (0.2–0.6%) were demonstrated. Its TMF behavior was characterized by the typical hysteresis loops and cyclic stress-strain response.INTRODUCTION The thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF) behaviour becomes increasing important to evaluate the elevated-temperature properties of materials used as the critical components in automotive and aerospace industries, such as the gas turbines (Hu, Shi & Yang, 2016; Moverare, 2007; Segersäll et al., 2015) and engine blocks (Grieb, Christ & Plege, 2010; Javidani & Larouche, 2014). During the cycles of start-up and shutdown of the engines, these components undergo a complex change of loading. Meanwhile, a dramatic temperature gradient exists on the components due to the cooling system. Therefore, the cyclic changes of load and temperature can give rise to the TMF and may limit the use life of such components (Hu, Shi & Yang, 2016; Javidani & Larouche, 2014; Moverare, 2007). Hence, performing the TMF tests to precisely simulate the cyclic changes of load and temperature to understand the TMF behaviours of materials is playing a significant role in the safety design of these components. For TMF tests, two principal types of cycles are generally employed, including the in-phase (IP) cycle where the load and temperature are at the same phase (i.e. maximum load at highest temperature) and out-of-phase (OP) cycle where the maximum load is applied at minimum temperature (Kliemt, 2012; Miller, 2014). The most significant damage mechanisms in engine components are reported to be OP TMF cycles (Javidani & Larouche, 2014; Kliemt, 2012)."

The mechanisms and kinetics of copper oxidation and reduction have been investigated in small scale thermal gravimetric experiments as well as in laboratory pilot scale, packed bed reactors. With blister copper flowing gravitationally down through a packed bed of ceramic particles, counter-current to low oxygen containing combustion gases, the rate of oxidation was found to be very high due to the large surface area created. Similarly, reduction by flowing copper through a packed bed of charcoal lead to rapid de-oxidation. Based on these laboratory measurements, fundamental rate data have been obtained. Modeling of industrial sized packed bed reactors using the laboratory results, opened up the possibilities of developing a new, very intensive, continuous process for copper fire refining. The developed mathematical model together with a computer process simulator, allowed for the design of the industrial-pilot installation to be built and tested at the ENAMI Paipote smelter in Chile.

This compilation presents information obtained through investigation of manganese deposits and a reconnaissance of potential manganese-bearing areas of southwestern Oregon and Del Norte County, Calif., from October 1952 to September 1955. The report includes maps, assays, and preliminary examination data on 39 manganese deposits distributed throughout Curry, Coos, Douglas, Josephine, and Jackson Counties, Oreg., and 1 deposit in Del Norte County, Calif. On the basis of mineral content the deposits can be divided into three groups: 1 Manganese silicate deposits, manganese oxide deposits, and manganiferous iron de-posits. Generally the oxides occur along the coast in the Curry-Coos County area, the manganiferous iron deposits are in the Josephine-Douglas area, and the manganese silicates are found in both the Josephine-Douglas and Jackson County areas. The deposits are characteristically irregular in form and usually small. Most silicate and manganiferous iron deposits are in metasediments of Triassic (?) age; oxide deposits are in sediments varying in age from Jurassic to Eocene.
