In high temperature processes thermodynamic equilibrium is assumed and therefore chemical potential of elements, among the condensed phases, have to be the same. In such situation impurities distribute accordingly and their fractional distributions are affected by the masses of the coexisting phases. It has been claimed Teniente Converters perform quite well for smelting high impurity concentrates, especially in respect to volatilization and/or slagging. Production of high matte grade near white metal composition, requiring moderate oxygen enrichment in the process air, results in a huge mass of gas and therefore a high fraction of impurities report to it. Similarly, by recycling different sources of slag, flue dust or other materials, the mass of the final slag is increased and so do the masses of impurities reporting to the slag. Nevertheless, above a certain level the recycling of smelter byproducts is no longer feasible and the cycle has to be halted, unless higher impurity mattes are accepted. Although the process might be continued during converting and refining, lengthy and expensive measures have to be taken if suitable anode copper for electrolytic refining is to be achieved. In the present study samples of high arsenic matte grade and slag were obtained on a pilot scale. The matte samples, on the order 75%Cu, were equilibrated with slag at varying ratios in magnesia crucibles under CO/C02 atmospheres at 1523 K. After 24 hours equilibrium matte and slag were rapidly solidified and analyzed by copper, sulfur, iron and arsenic. Furthermore, industrial samples of matte and slag, in the order 75%Cu at 1523 K, were obtained via a special quenching sampling device to determine the association of copper and suspension of matte and copper in slag. Based on the results, the distribution coefficient of arsenic between slag and matte was evaluated along with copper species in slag and the fractional distribution of arsenic, in the coexisting phases, was determined as a function of the ratio mass of slag to mass of matte.

The U.S. Department of Energy is supporting the engineering development of three advanced physical coal cleaning technologies--selective agglomeration, advanced flotation, and advanced cycloning--capable of significantly reducing the pyritic-sulfur content of U. S. coals. The objective of this activity is to provide the coal production and electric-utility industries with a cost-effective option for addressing the SO2 emission reductions required by the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments. A secondary objective is to evaluate the potential of advanced coal cleaning for removing trace elements that are precursors to the formation of hazardous air pollutants. This paper will summarize the status of the three advanced physical coal cleaning engineering development projects.

Grade Engineering®, integrated across the mine value chain, has a pivotal role to play in achieving step change reductions in energy and water usage in mine operations. High levels of gangue rejection in the mine can significantly improve mineral head grades and overall productivity. A highly successful example is described at the Minera San Cristóbal (MSC) operation. The nature of the mineralisation in their “intrusive” ore domains in particular has facilitated high rejection rates (75 % of the mass), with significant upgrading of metal to the “accepts” streams (equating to a 2.6 times upgrade in the intrinsic Nett Smelter Return). Results from a series of production trials have confirmed these strong upgrades, resulting in the transformation of mineralised “marginal wastes” to high grade ore feedstocks. If new approaches to more energy and water efficient comminution and separation technologies can also realise gangue rejection at finer sizes in the concentrator, then preconcentration strategies across the value chain also offer the promise of no wet tailings treatment facilities and greatly reduced volumes of waste streams. This “No Tails” strategy is discussed, along with the integrated technologies needed to realise its effect. The work suggests a pathway and insights of a sustainable future for the Minerals Industry, unconstrained by Energy and Water, along with no requirement to produce problematic disposal streams. This strategy has the potential to significantly reposition the social, environmental, financial, and regulatory context of existing and new mining opportunities.

THE potential oil-and gas-bearing area with "which this paper deals is the large undefined Carboniferous basin, roughly triangular in shape, occupying about 10,000 square miles of southern and eastern New Brunswick. Its base, about 135 miles long, lies on the gulf of St. Lawrence and embraces the whole eastern coast-line of the Province, while its apex lies in the south-west corner of the Province, near the International boundary (see map, Figure 1). The Carboniferous basin may be divided roughly into two areas-the Northern basin and the Southern basin-by a structural feature represented by a ridge of low hills running north-easterly from the Saint John river, near Saint John, on the southwest, to Indian mountain, about eight miles north of Moncton, in the northeast. Within the Northern basin, all evidence regarding the presence or attitude of the older Mississippian Albert Shale series, the only oil-bearing rocks known in New Brunswick, is for the greater part obscured by a thick and practically horizontal blanket of Pennsylvanian strata and, although evidences of oil and gas have been reported, none has been positively identified. Five parallellines of gentle folding, running to the northeast, occur in the Pennsylvanian rocks, within a distance of 100 miles from north to south. This folding is reflected in the courses of the rivers, which lie within the synclines. The relationship of the folding in the younger rocks to structures in the uncomfortably underlying older rocks is unknown, but should now be possible of clarification by means of a geophysical survey accompanied by drilling. Independent geological examinations have yielded no evidence of value in this respect, nor have five exploratory boreholes drilled by per-cussion tools to a maximum depth of 3,645 feet been of assistance, as only one inconclusive hole completely traversed the beds which normally overlie the Albert shales.

"Fracture mechanics plays an important role in studies of geologic materials such as rock and coal. Yet fracture data are scarce for rock and most limited or unreliable for coal. A testing system was developed which can apply mixed mode loads to a crack tip in many rocks and geologic materials. It is possible to subject the test specimen to pure mode I, various mixed modes and a nearly pure mode II fracture load. The system is currently used to study the mechanics of fine fragment formation in various coals. Experimental measurements include KI and KII' fracture velocity and acoustic emission.INTRODUCTIONA major research program at The Pennsylvania State University is directed to understanding the fundamental mechanics of fine fragment formation in various coals. The program represents an effort to reduce the incidence of coal workers pneumoconiosis (black lung) in coal miners. The principal source of the respirable coal fragments is the cutting operation which forms and liberates the particles by a fracture process. Present understanding of the mechanics of the events which form and liberate these particles is meager (Cook, 1982).Current knowledge of the fundamental mechanisms of coal dust generation and entrainment in terms of the underlying fracture mechanics is critically needed to improve and possibly control the processes involved. Whether the cutting operation is done with a 'continuous miner' cutting machine, a plow or a longwall shearer, it is fundamentally a problem of mixed-mode crack propagation. When a cutting tool interacts with coal, it causes numerous cracks to propagate through the intact material. Numerous larger fragments are broken free, but another quantity of undesirable fine fragments is also created. The formation of these respirable fragments may be a direct result of the crack propagation process; hence, a thorough understanding of the fracture mechanics of coal is required to minimize production of the unwanted fine fragments.In most rock engineering applications, the rock material properties are of secondary importance to the rock mass properties; however, for rock fragmentation and rock cutting problems, it is rock material properties such as fracture toughness which are of prime interest (Bieniawski, 1980). Several rock cutting and rock failure theories have been proposed, but it is only very recently that fracture mechanics concepts have been successfully applied to the study of rock cutting mechanics. All cutting models seek to predict the cutting forces and the cutter geometry necessary to cause rock breakage and chip formation given some fundamental mechanical properties ~f the rock. Such models have wide applications in drilling, tunnel boring and mining problems. Nelson et al., (1985, 1986) has provided a very useful correlation between the laboratory measured fracture mechanics properties of rock and the performance of the disk cutters on tunnel boring machines."

In order to increase the production of Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS) as well as to fulfill the growing expectations of various industries served, steelmakers must have wide- ranging know-how in terms of plant technology, operation, processes, quality control and, last but not least, know-how for AHSS including certification procedures. MET/Con is highly focused on the production of coated AHSS with tensile strengths higher than 600 MPa. Common heating and cooling technologies are unable to handle high alloyed steel grades – pre-oxidation and rapid cooling technologies have been developed to face these new challenges. MET/CON and Drever International have the knowledge to produce newest steel grades with these technologies.

"Rio Tinto’s Western Australian expansion, combined with mining within structurally complex geology and increasingly below the water table, presents challenges in effective slope management to ensure safe and economic mining.The Geotechnical Management System (GMS) was developed by Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) to manage geotechnical risks identified during the design process and implementation, and to ensure feedback based on the ‘as-found’ conditions. The GMS utilizes a risk-based approach to geotechnical risk management and is centred on the geotechnical risk and hazard assessment management system (GRAHAMS). GRAHAMS is used to assess pre- and post-control risk for future potential risks (planned slopes), current risks (as-built slopes), and actual geotechnical hazards (realized risks) identified in the pit. This serves as a core operational risk management tool in identifying and prioritizing key risk sectors and management of critical controls. The system’s database reporting functionality supports effective communication of operational risks to operational personnel, as well as reporting the risk profile across operations to management.A rigorous engagement process between design engineers and sitebased engineers is implemented to ensure that key design assumptions, limitations, risks, and opportunities are understood by the site teams. This information, together with mine plan schedule details, is used to assess the design risk and develop appropriate controls. These controls typically include slope performance monitoring and slope reconciliation. The design feedback loop is closed through sharing of key slope performance and reconciliation data with the design teams.The GMS has been successfully implemented in RTIO pits and is fundamental to successful geotechnical slope management. Improved characterization of design assumptions has allowed for re-assessment of the pit design and improved hazard management in high-risk pits. The GMS, GRAHAMS, and other processes reduce the incidence of unexpected slope instability. Improved understanding of rock mass conditions has allowed for economic optimization through redesign of slopes, allowing for an improved understanding of risk and fewer unexpected conditions (surprises), hence an increased realized value."

The commercial production of copper metal involves a sequence of purification stages. One step of this process eliminates bulk quantities of iron and sulphur from matte Cu2S(FeS to produce blister containing 95.5 per cent copper. This task is traditionally performed in the Pierce-Smith converter, a cylindrical vessel in widespread use throughout the copper industry. Typically, multiple Pierce-Smith converters are arranged along an aisle, simplifying material transfer from vessel to vessel. Materials are moved through the aisle in pots and boats, using overhead cranes. In terms of the overall process, the converter aisle represents a critical processing unitùit contributes significantly to the value added nature of the metal. The aisle is subject to significant process disturbances. Thus, improvements in the operationÆs modes and conditions have a direct impact on process profitability. As with any commercial operation, improvements are always sought to increase process performance. The general approach involves process modelling, followed by an application of control and optimisation theory to this model. The results of such a study are then applied to the real process, leading to improved performance.

Over the past several years, state governments have been vigorously refurbishing old health department agencies and smoke control laws in anticipation of pending federal developments. Many states now possess a mature air pollution control administrative organization and a fairly sophisticated set of regulations on air pollution, This developing network of state control legislation and regulation is the machinery which will be called upon to implement federal standards, In order to prevent the wasted effort and resources which inevitably result from hasty action, industry should be in con- tact with local and state control agencies and be familiar with lines of communication to agency representatives. Thorough knowledge of applicable laws and regulations, both current and pending, is required. Moreover, federal law and future federal air pollution control plans, should be well known. Industrial air pollution control should be geared to a long range plan which utilizes existing technology while at the same the recognizing that today's technology will be improved upon with time, Regulation, too, can be expected to become more stringent. The implications of air pollution control in the Appalachian region of the United States will be felt most strongly by the coal industry of this area. Either directly or indirectly most regulations in these states have a significant bearing on coal mining, processing, utilization or waste disposal. The extent of coal-related activity in the Appalachian States of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee can be observed from the data provided in Table I. This data indicates that 86 percent of active bituminous coal mines and 69 percent of bituminous coal production were accounted for by these states. The purpose of this paper is to provide information on current and proposed legislation and regulations on air pollution in the Appalachian states, The information should prove valuable not only to the coal industry but also to industry in general as a means of evaluating both pollution control action that has been taken to date and the course of future control measures. Reference information in the forms of addresses of appropriate agencies and citations to specific state laws and regulations is provided. All information is current as of February, 1969.

The Ambuklao hydroelectric dam was originally constructed in the 1950s in the remote and mountainous region of the northern Philippines. Following its construction the dam has suffered heavily due to siltation and a partial collapse of the intake structure due to a 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the region in 1990. Between the years 1990 and 1999 the power station progressively lost its capacity to generate power. In 1999 the owner took the power station out of commission. The power station remained idle over the next 12 years. In 2008 the power station was sold to a new owner who commissioned the rehabilitation works.The rehabilitation project restored the operating status of the power station in June 2011 and increased its capacity from 75 MW to 105 MW. The civil contract of the rehabilitation project required the construction of a new intake structure behind an in situ rock coffer dam on the edge of the existing reservoir, new 6.2?m diameter × 124?m deep blind sunk shaft behind the intake structure, which connects to a new 6.8?m horseshoe profile headrace tunnel that ultimately connected onto the existing vertical penstocks which feed three No 35 MW Horizontal Turbines rated at 155?m head.The unique challenge in rehabilitating this existing hydropower station involved finding solutions that would conclusively deal with the challenging geological and hydrogeological conditions associated with excavating new tunnels and a drop shaft beneath a live dam.McConnell Dowell was awarded the civil works package for the rehabilitation works in August 2008. The Ambuklao rehabilitation program took 33 months to complete.Over 600?m of tunnels were excavated in highly weathered and often challenging geotechnical conditions via drill and blast with the extensive use of high-pressure fissure grouting to control groundwater ingress that was surcharged by the dam.This paper focuses on the use of high-pressure fissure grouting that took place to enable the excavation of the new waterway system and intake structure.CITATION:Bowskill, A and Harrison, C, 2014. The GPM Gold Operation has been employing an Albion Process™ plant at its Sotk (Zod) gold mine in Armenia since 2014. Long term data from the operation is now being published for the first time. The data presented includes concentrate throughput, as feed to the Albion Process™ plant (tonnes per day), sulphur grade in concentrate (% S), total sulphide sulphur oxidation in the Albion Process™ plant (% SOx) and gold recovery from Albion Process™ plant residues (%). The data provides a basis for evaluation of the effectiveness of the commissioning, ramp up and operation of the Albion Process™ plant. Notwithstanding the impact of a slower concentrator commissioning than expected, the plant demonstrates Series 1 behaviour on McNulty ramp up curves, indicating successful commissioning and fast ramp up. Interrogation of the data and operational experience indicates that this successful operation is a result of a process that is flexible, robust and stable, one that was designed well based on solid testwork results and pilot plant trials during the study phase undertaken by Glencore Technology and Core Resources, and where the local operators were provided with appropriate training in operation of the plant. "In this study, hydraulic conductivity (K) geostatistics were used to predict residence time distribution of well-to-well flow. Flow profiles, fracture density measurements, and pumping tests were available from the highly fractured Florence Copper in situ leaching site. The flow profiles were used to establish the statistical distribution and spatial autocorrelation of K. Two tests were used for validation. The first test confirmed that fracture density and K are autocorrelated over similar length scales. In the second test, Monte Carlo flow simulations successfully recreated the results of pumping tests. Flow sim¬ulations were used to stochastically model well-to-well residence time distribution. RÉSUMÉ Dans cette étude, nous utilisons la géostatistique de la conductivité hydraulique (K) pour prévoir la distribution des temps de séjour (DTS) de l’écoulement entre les puits. Des profils de l’écoulement, des mesures de la densité des fractures et des essais de pompage existaient pour le site fortement fracturé de lixiviation in situ de Florence Copper. Les profils de l’écoulement ont permis d’établir la distribution statistique et l’autocorrélation spatiale de K. Deux essais ont servi à la validation ; le premier a confirmé que la densité des fractures et K sont autocorrélés sur des échelles de longueur similaires ; quant au second, des simulations d’écoulements de type Monte Carlo sont parvenues à reproduire les résultats des essais de pompage. Les simulations d’écoulement ont servi à établir un modèle stochastique de la DTS de l’écoulement entre les puits.INTRODUCTION In situ leaching is the circulation of a dilute acid or base solution in the subsurface, via a series of injection and recovery wells, to dissolve a target metal. In situ leach modelling requires forecasting the residence time distribution (RTD) of flow between wells. In fractured formations such as copper porphyry deposits, order-of-magnitude variations in hydraulic conductivity (K) can result in highly channeled flow, resulting in a heavy tailed RTD (Becker & Shapiro, 2003; Kang, Le Borgne, Dentz, Bour, & Juanes, 2015). Channeling through preferential pathways has impacted copper recovery at several past in situ leaching field tests (Cathles, Glenn, Lenzi, Nigrini, Deans, & Huff, 1978; Ahlness & Pojar, 1983; Schmidt, Earley, & Friedel, 1994; Sinclair & Thompson, 2015). The aim of this work is to combine multiple types of hydrogeological measurements to stochastically forecast the well-to-well RTD in fractured rock for the purposes of copper in situ leach modelling."

In the quest to access valuable critical minerals, humankind is expanding the frontier into extreme environments like space and deep-sea mining. These ambitious enterprises involve considerable costs and lengthy development cycles to ensure the robustness of mining systems in the face of the harshest conditions and unforeseen challenges. Unfortunately, obtaining information from these unexplored territories is complicated. Data is often scarce, incomplete or impossible to obtain until equipment is deployed, leaving engineers facing many uncertainties throughout the design, testing, production and preparation of such missions. Despite these challenges, these extreme environments operate under consistent physical and chemical principles that can be faithfully digitally replicated. However, unexplored areas and dynamic systems like weather and geology continue to carry uncertainties. While eliminating uncertainties remains elusive, Digital Twins offers a means of robust risk management tool. These virtual replicas can excel in simulating extreme conditions and unexpected events, helping optimise and validate mining system designs tailored for such hostile environments. This study takes inspiration from the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Curiosity Rover’s wheel damage rate to develop a Multiphysics Modelling and Virtual Motion Simulation (MMVMS) system. Using advanced Generative Design, this MMVMS system refines the MSL’s design, simulates component and system performance, and assesses the risk of premature damage while operating on Mars. Additionally, MMVMS integrates cutting-edge CAD design technologies from aerospace and manufacturing to realistically recreate the Martian environment and a detailed representation of MSL, allowing mobility verification and validation simulation to test different components in terms of materials, design, weight, power and, therefore, cost. The research highlights the precision of MMVMS in replicating extreme conditions, simulating and evaluating internal and external variables influencing the entire system (Rover) in real-time, and predicting movements, failures, and premature damage. This sophisticated Digital Twin technology, showcased in this research, holds promise not only for space missions but also to be adapted for terrestrial and deep-sea mining operations.

This Bureau of Mines report presents results of a detailed study of water usage in the Wyoming mineral industry along with projections for the future In 1964, the mineral industries of Wyoming used 20 billion gallons of new water, nearly all self-supplied, and reused 72 billion gallons, a total usage of 92 billion gallons. Consumption amounted to 2.8 billion gallons. About one-half of the 20 billion gallons of new water was obtained from [srface] sources and the rest from ground water. Reported costs, covering power and maintenance, for the self-supplied new water at mineral industry operations ranged from less than 1 cent to 20 cents per thousand gallons and aver-aged 8 cents. At one mineral-related operation, water was hauled by truck to supplement a well supply. The cost was $2.00 per thousand gallons delivered. However, the supplemental requirement was only 10 gpm. Cost figures for the recirculation of water, covering power and maintenance, averaged 2 cents. In terms of water usage, the value of product for the entire industry was $25 per thousand gallons of new water intake and about $180 per thousand gallons consumed. The study revealed that Wyoming has a water deficiency but that the shortage is less severe than in the arid Southwest. Projection of the water needs of the Wyoming mineral industries indicates that the demand for new water will increase from the 20 billion gallons used in 1964 to 25 billion gallons in 1980, a 25-percent increase. The projected new-water requirement for the year 2000 is 40 billion gallons, a 100-percent increase compared with the 1964 figure.

"Oxide, nitride and other compound coatings often do not have adequate properties for newer applications when produced using very high deposition rates and simple evaporation techniques. Solar control, abrasion resistance, low reflectance and barrier effective engineered coatings require exacting properties. Such properties can be obtained by adapting the activated reactive evaporation (ARE) technology to Web production processes. Adaptions of the HAD and MAD processes will be described along with data on the high deposition rates obtained. These fast production capabilities were developed in order to make the processes economically competitive.IntroductionThe Physical Vapor Deposition technique (PVD) has been used to coat steel strip for over 20 years. (1) However, its use as a production process has been very limited because of the high cost of the PVD coating process and because, in some instances, the properties of the coating were not good enough to meet the customers requirements. Nevertheless, the PVD process has found wide application in the airplane engine and electronic component markets. These production processes have stimulated further development and advances in the technology.In 1971, Profession R. F. Bunshah developed the Activated Reactive Evaporation (ARE) process which was then used to produce hard coatings such as carbides, nitrides, oxides and other refractory compounds. (2) The process from a fundamental viewpoint -produces a coating on the substrate via the evaporation of metal in the presence of a low pressure (typically around 1 millitorr) of reactive gas, with a plasma created in the space between the metal source and the substrate.The plasma may be created by many means but its function is two-fold. First, it activates the reaction between the metal vapors and the reactive gas atoms/molecules resulting in the formation of a compound that deposits on the substrate. Second, because the plasma is in contact with the substrate, it results in a negative bias on the substrate and produces bombardment of the growing film with ions and energetic neutrals from the plasma. This bombardment causes many significant changes in the microstructure, properties and appearance of the coating.Recently another new technology Pulsed Magnetron Systems (PMS) has been introduced into PVD. This new technology has been pioneered in production scale equipment by Dr. S. Schiller (3) and associates. El presente texto describe los problemas de deforestación, precios e importaciones de mercurio en la minera artesanal aurífera de Madre de Dios. En ese sentido, a medida que la interconexión de la economia mundial avanza, es más difícil que países en desarrollo aprovechen las fuerzas lucrativas de la demanda global para lograr una sostenibilidad social y ambiental. En consecuencia, los países en desarrollo contienen un peso ambiental desigual en relación con los países desarrollados qie importan materias primas. Como ejemplo de ello, el precio del oro aumentó, así como la minería aurífera informal y no industrial en los países en los países en desarrollo y el mal manejo del mercurio en el uso del oro, repercutió en el medio ambiente y los mismos mineros, al igual que el problema de la deforestación. Por ello, se plantea un programa para enfrentar dchos problemas en la región de Madre de Dios y reducir el aumento de la minería informal.

Sewage presently being discharged into the Tijuana River Valley pollutes the valley as well as the beaches in the South Bay of San Diego, making the beaches unusable nearly year round. The SBTO will convey flows down a 8.5 m (28 ft.) by 58 m (190 ft.) deep drop shaft, through a 3.35 m (11 ft.) by 5.8 km (3.6 mile) long tunnel, and up a 46 m by 2.7 m (150 ft. by 9 ft.) riser shaft connecting to a 1.5 km (0.95 mile) of seafloor pipeline and 1.2 km (0.76 mile) of diffusers on the ocean floor. The drop shaft will be sunk through 38 m (125 ft.) of saturated sands and gravels and 20 m (65 ft.) into the dense fine sands of the San Diego Formation. The tunnel liner has been designed as a five piece, single pass, gasketed, bolted, reinforced concrete liner designed to withstand an external head of 76 m (250 ft.) of water and internal operating head of up to 27 m (89 ft.) and to accommodate movement at the numerous fault crossings. The tunnel is contemplated to be driven with a state-of-the-art Earth Pressure Balance Machine (EPBM) or slurry shield machine through a wide range of conditions from clay to gravel with boulders.

Northparkes is located 27 km north of the township of Parkes in central New South Wales, Australia. The operations consist of underground block cave mines and an ore processing plant that produces high-grade copper and gold concentrate. Production is currently sourced from the E48 Lift 1 block cave mine and open cut stockpiles. Mining commenced at Northparkes in 1994 as an open cut operation. Underground block cave mining began in 1997. Northparkes was the first mine in Australia to use the highly efficient block cave mining method, which relies on gravity and natural rock stresses to fragment the ore.The occurrence of air blasts is one of the principal mining hazards in block caving operations between the time of first undercutting and breakthrough of the cave to surface. As such, it needs to be managed continuously, and risk assessments need to be reviewed on a regular basis for applicability to changing conditions. Unfortunately, there is little literature on how to practically approach air blast risk assessments in a way that can be incorporated in the day-to-day operation of a mine. Previous methods of assessing air blast risk were tedious and results were often unrepeatable.With the extension of the E48 Lift 1 extraction level, it was necessary to assess the air blast risk for the extension drives and develop operational guidelines for production from the extension. A review of the methodology for assessing air blast risks revealed substantial improvement opportunities.This paper outlines the principles used for air blast risk assessments at Northparkes Mines and the methodology employed to achieve efficient, repeatable and auditable results.CITATION:Vejrazka, C, 2016.
