In 1947 the Bureau of Mines, as an accident-prevention measure, decided to advocate the adoption of roof bolting (suspension roof supports) in coal mines where it appeared to be applicable. Subsequent experience has disclosed that the applicability of this support is more general than was first suspected; moreover, comparison of the accident records of mines before and after adoption of the roof-bolting method shows results that more than justify the effort and funds expended. The industry has responded enthusiastically, because roof bolting proved to be not only an accident-prevention measure but also one to increase productive efficiency. In some instances this increase in the productivity of men and machines has been almost incredible and has led many mining men to conclude that through some hocus-pocus they can now cast aside many or all of the time-proven rule of good mining practice. If this tendency is not counteracted, it could easily result in an increase of roof-fall accidents, which may outweigh the benefits of roof bolting and discredit an innovation in roof control that shows great promise of materially reducing our mining accidents. From an economic standpoint it may represent the margin between profit and loss in many mining operations. The purpose of this manuscript is not to propose an inflexible code or set of rules but to summarize the experience to date as a guide for those who have the responsibility for the installation and inspection of roof bolts. This experience consists of approximately 250 investigations of roof failure in which roof bolting was involved either directly or indirectly. It should be pointed out that many of these failures were controlled, occurring during experimental periods, and comparatively few of the accidental failures actually resulted in personal injury, yet a significant number represented potential hazards.

Steeply dipping seam refers to the coal seam with dipping angle in the range of 35?55°, which is well recognized to be very hard to mine by the mining industry all the world. In the last two decades, some fundamental researches were focused on the strata behavior of long-wall panel, complicated rock mass breaking process of the steeply dipping seam, overburden stress field developing and evolution, rock strata breaking and moving process, rock structure stability mechanism and control. Results show that it?s presenting macro stress arch-shell (MSAS) of the stress distribution of the overlying rock in steeply dipping seam. The MSAS is the spatial distribution of intensity envelope line under the strength criterion and has the geometry shape asymmetry as well as the stress distribution heterogeneity. The arch- shell base will forward as the working face mine forward and the shell roof will extend to higher overlying strata above the gob. In this paper, the stress arch-shell analysis model and coordinate system were established and analyzed the inclined masonry structure at different zone. Analysis results show that the rock damage at the key part of the arch-shell is the main factor which causes whole overlying rock structure failure. The rock structure instability modes have tension instability of the shell roof, compression-shear instability of the shell shoulder and composite instability of the shell base, meantime, instability coefficient is proposed to determine instability condition. The above research results enrich the complex coal seams mining theory and provide a theoretical basis for mining safely and efficiently in steeply dipping seam.

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a medical technique that produces three dimensional images of the body, commonly to aid diagnosis and treatment of tumours. PET has been developed by the University of Birmingham in order to track particles in an opaque system which is known as Positron Emission Particle Tracking (PEPT). The object to be tracked is irradiated. As the radionuclide decays positrons are produced; when these collide with electrons a pair of concurrent parallel back-to-back gamma waves are emitted and detected, from which the position of the object can be calculated. Stirred media mills are used for particle size reduction. The mill is usually operated at high solids loading with grinding media and has a polyurethane or polyurethane-lined steel pot and is thus opaque. For this study grinding media has been directly irradiated and tracked using the PET camera during the grind. The stirred media mill can be divided into cells of equal volume known as voxels. The fraction of the total time the irradiated media spend in each voxel can be shown in an occupancy diagram. The mean velocity and kinetic energy of the media for each voxel are calculated and also plotted. In occupancy and kinetic energy plots colour indicates the value of the voxel, in dimensionless time and Joules respectively. The arrow in velocity plots shows direction and length of arrow indicates magnitude of the mean velocity for the voxel. From these diagrams and further data analysis a detailed understanding of the flow patterns, media behaviour and high energy areas of the mill can be developed. Variables considered were the tip speed of the impeller and density of the grinding media. It was found that the grinder has three distinct regions: above, at and below the impeller with each region having its own flow patterns and velocity and kinetic energy profiles. These are different for each variable and so are used to characterise the grind. Tip speed and density of the grinding media were shown to both affect the velocity of the media and the proportion of time spent in the each region of the grinder.

"Some results are presented of an integrated geological and geophysical study of Precambrian magnetite-quartz iron-formation in the Kapiko Iron Range north of Nakina, Ontario. Detailed geological and topographical mapping was carried out in conjunction with detailed geophysical investigations such as vertical magnetic field, vertical magnetic gradient, hammer seismic, horizontal-loop electromagnetic and magnetic susceptibility surveys. In addition, oriented drill cores were obtained for magnetic polarization studies.Vertical-force magnetic anomalies within individual rock units showed a strong positive correlation with topographic relief. Moreover, magnetic intensity was found not to be quantitatively proportional to the magnetite content in the rocks, due to the presence of high remanent magnetization of the magnetite. Also, the remanent polarization direction was sub parallel to the plunge of the fold structure and mineral lineation in associated rocks.Vertical magnetic gradient measurements were found to be more accurate in locating buried contacts between magnetite-quartz iron-formation and country rock than the vertical magnetic force data.An in-situ magnetic susceptibility meter was used to measure the magnetite content of iron-formation, and the measurements were subsequently compared with vertical-force magnetic results.The results of the EM survey were inconclusive; some magnetite-rich zones produced anomalies in the out-of-phase component. whereas others did not. The reasons for such inconsistencies are not yet apparent.Longitudinal seismic wave velocities measured parallel to the bedding in magnetite-quartz iron-formation ranged from 10,600 ft/sec. to 14,500 ft/sec. The seismic velocity appears to increase with an increase in deformation of the rocks."

A newly started copper hydrometallurgical plant was confronted with a manganese oxidation issue in electrowinning. This oxidation, in the absence of the amount of iron required to stabilise the electrolyte oxidation-reduction potential, is known to produce oxidants (MnO2, MnO4) that can cause accelerated degradation of the organic phase components in solvent extraction and corrosion of lead anodes in electrowinning. The overpotential required to build up the protection layer on new anodes causes an increased electrolyte potential that creates oxidized species in the electrowinning tankhouse, and these species come back to solventextraction plant with the recycled spent electrolyte. This paper discusses the impacts of manganese oxidants on the health of a plant organic phase. It also outlines the actions taken using iron scraps and sulfur dioxide to mitigate the problem that happened due to the lack of ferrous iron sulfate available on site, as recommended for better control.

This paper presents methods of designing hydraulic fracture treatments in formations saturated with slightly compressible liquids. Howard and Fast describe the fluid-loss control resulting from the viscosity and compressibility effects of the reservoir fluid in terms of a fracturing fluid coefficient. However, for horizontal fractures, this coefficient is applicable to infinitely thick reservoirs. These methods of evaluating fluid loss from horizontal fractures during treatment differ from previous methods in that: (I) formation thickness is incorporated in the velocity function describing the rate of fluid loss to the formation; and (2) for a given thickness the relative position of the fracture to the horizontal boundaries of the reservoir or any interrnediate permeability barrier is incorporated in the design procedure. This theory is applied to several actual and hypothetical field cases. The results of these calculations demonstrate that the eflect of formation thickness on fluid loss from horizontal fractures may result in fractures several times larger than predicted by other methods. INTRODUCTION Hydraulic fracturing has been the dominating well-stimulation technique during the last decade. From the time it was commercially available, fracturing has had a very favorable success ratio compared to other stimulation methods. However, numerous wells that were successfully stimulated remained economic failures. Only in the last few years has the oil industry recognized the importance of designing treatments for each well which will yield the maximum profit. This implies that for a given set of treatment conditions the size and general physical characteristics of the fracture can be determined. One of the outstanding contributions in the field of fracture design was presented by Howard and Fast.' In their paper, three flow mechanisms that control fluid loss from the fracture to the formation are defined: (1) viscosity effects of the fracturing fluid, (2) viscosity and compressibility effects of the reservoir fluid, and (3) wall-building effects of a treated fracturing fluid. The rate of fluid loss to the formation adjacent to a fracture is shown to be a function of time. For each flow mechanism the velocity function v(t) is expressed as a constant or fracturing fluid coefficient divided by the square root of time. This form of v(t) can be used in the Carter equation, as developed in the Howard and Fasc paper, to estimate the areal extent of fractures. This equation may be written as In the following sections the effect of formation thickness on fluid loss from horizontal fractures is evaluated when the controlling flow mechanism is the viscosity and compressibility of the reservoir fluids. The major assumptions inherent in the Carter equation are brought out in subsequent mathematical developments. THE EFFECT OF RESERVOIR FLUIDS ON FRACTURE EXTENSION When a fracture treatment is performed using a fracturing fluid identical to the reservoir fluid, the only flow mechanism controlling fluid loss is the viscosity and compressibility effects of the reservoir fluids. In developing a fracturing fluid coefficient for this mechanism, Howard and Fast considered a segment of the formation bounded by a unit area on the fracture face and extending to infinity in the direction of leak-off as shown in Fig. 1(a). "The Precambrian sedimentary series of the Labrador geosyncline, including iron formation, extends into southwestern Labrador and adjacent Quebec. The iron formation consisted of primary oxide, silicate, and carbonate facies which were deposited simultaneously in an irregular basin in response to migratory environmental conditions. The iron formation isochemically recrystallized to coarse-grained quartz-iron oxide, iron silicate, and quartz-iron carbon-ate rocks during prolonged regional metamorphism. The rocks are deformed on two deformation axes intersecting at large angles, and are characterized by isoclinal to recumbent folds. Parts of the formation have been profoundly affected by a post-metamorphic leaching and oxidizing environment."

Summary Records of the past show that the first mineral production in what is now the Province of Manitoba consisted of salt, obtained about the year 1800 by the evaporation of brine. Also at an early time in our history, the Ordovician limestone at St. Andrews Locks, East Selkirk, and other localities was quarried for use as building scone in the construction of forts and fur trading posts. Both salt and building stone are still produced in Manitoba, although not from the original sources. In addition, there is now a substantial production of a variety of other industrial minerals and their products such as lime, crushed stone, gypsum, peat moss, and bentonite. The annual dollar value of production of the industrial mineral industry in Manitoba is today greater than at any time in our past and is derived from a greater variety of products. At the present time, exclusive of the various gravel pits operated by the Provincial Department of Public Works, twenty companies operating thirty-four separate pits, quarries, or mines are producing industrial mineral raw materials in Manitoba. This paper attempts to outline the development of the industry from its start about 1800 to the present, giving general information on the various materials produced. Some suggestions regarding the possibilities of establishing new industries based on other raw materials are given at the end of the paper.

THE discovery of natural gas with naphtha in 1924 in the Upper Palaeozoic limestone of Turner Valley, 35 miles southwest of Calgary, has led to continuous developments in this field. Drilling undertaken soon after this discovery demonstrated that the anticlinal structure was in reality a major drag-fold cut off on the east side by a westerly inclined fault of large displacement. The faulted edge of the .limestone at depth determines the eastern limits of the field, which between 1924 and 1936 was shown to have a gas area 14 miles long by about 1 mile wide. Since the strata dip westerly, away from the axis of the fold, drilling becomes progressively deeper to the west and, with the advent of deeper drilling, crude oil was discovered in 1936 on the west flank of the structure but in the same porous reservoir rocks as the gas on the crest and upper parts of the fold. Since 1936, drilling has been undertaken wholly for the production of crude-oil and at present two producing areas have been found within the Turner Valley structure. The larger of these, at the south end of the field, in the vicinity of Highwood river, has a length of about 4 3/4 miles and a proved width of one mile, whereas the smaller, in the north end of the field, south of the north fork of Sheep river, has only a few producing wells.

At the Annual General Meeting of the Institute in 1924. I endeavoured to present the position held by the mineral industries in the commercial life of this country. The facts and figures were presented at that time in a detached way. Since then, however, I have made some attempt to analyze them in order to determine the causes for that position and to draw some conclusions as to the future of the mining industry. As everyone knows, our trade figures are very often used in political discussion, especially in discussion of tariff policy. It would be entirely out of order for me to say anything touching the tariff issue and I want to have it clearly understood that, in my opinion, the material I am about to present contains not a single statement or conclusion which anyone would be warranted in using as an argument for either a lower or a higher tariff or for tariff changes of any kind. As a starting point, let me re-state, very sketchily, Canada's general situation in external trade. In the last calendar year, 1924, we sold Canadian merchandise of all kinds to other countries to the value of $1,045,000,000 in round figures. Our purchases abroad reached about $893,000,000. Thus our sales exceeded our purchases by roughly $152,000,000. In other words, we had what is known as a 'favourable balance of trade' - one of the biggest favourable balances we have ever had in our history. The proceeds of our sales of Canadian products enabled us to meet the bills for all our purchases of foreign commodities and, in addition, placed a large surplus to our credit with which to offset our interest charges and other obligations abroad.

In high pressure die casting processes, a die plays a critical role in removing heat from the molten metal during the cavity filling and solidification stages. Proper control of die temperature is essential for producing superior quality components and yielding high production rates. This paper proposes a local temperature control scheme for die thermal management based on a computerized intelligent real-time monitoring and control system (IRMCS). In this scheme, cooling water lines are controlled by a pump and solenoid valves. A controller is designed according to the law of die temperature fluctuations. The results obtained from the experiments carried out on a laboratory die casting process simulator indicate that the controller can limit the local die insert temperatures in a given band. Hence, the desired thermal pattern of the die insert becomes achievable.

William M. Courtis, Detroit, Mich. (communication to the Secretary*):—I have a few items to add to the history of the Lake Valley mines. In December, 1879, I was sent to the Bassic mine of Colorado and then to Lone mountain, near Silver City, N. M., and to various copper-camps in Arizona. I staged from Glorietta, N. M., to Tucson, Ariz., stopping at Silver City to see the Cosette mine. This mine led to the opening of the Lake Valley mines, and is a deposit of similar formation. New Year's day, 1880, found me crossing the Rio Grande above the Jornado del Muerto. At Aleman, Victorio's band crossecl four hours ahead of us. We picked up four wounded soldiers to take to Fort Bayard, for during the day the colored troops under General Hatch had been driving the Indians back through the San Andreas mountains. The traveler of to-day little realizes the dangers of these trips, when over very rough roads we made about 100 miles in a day and a night. I subsequently made this trip six times, up to 1882, and each time I missed an Indian attack by from one to four days. The day I arrived at Silver City news had come of the massacre of 75 women and children at the San Francisco ranch. The fighting-men of' Silver City had gone to rescue others. I was the only passenger from Socorro, N. M., until we picked up the soldiers. The next day we came suddenly on 5 of Victorio's band, but we had picked up several miners, so our stage bristled with guns, and we mere let alone. At or near my stone quarry, 6 miles from Socorro, 9 men, were killed by the band that, a day or two after, killed George. Daly, Lieutenant White, and all their men. Major falls of ground, strainbursts, airblast and mudrush events are the major hazards in block caving environments, resulting in both safety and financial consequences and losses. Rio Tinto mines have developed strategies to reduce the likelihood of these events occurring. However, until recently, there have been no tools available to monitor and manage these hazards in real time.Mira Geoscience and Rio Tinto have collaborated to develop real-time geohazmaps to monitor and manage major cave hazards. These geohazmaps are used by mine planners to integrate multiple hazard parameters that contribute to form a combined hazard rating.The benefits of implementing geohazmaps include safety and cost improvements through the early identification of potential locations for major events. These cost savings are realised in the design phase, where development and critical infrastructure is located in areas of lower hazard rating. Additional improvements can be achieved by taking the hazard level into consideration when planning the production and development schedules and ground support design.CITATION:Talu, S, Savage, E and Howe, S, 2016. THE places where, yesterday, oil was unknown contain tomorrow's fields. Unquestionably, some states that now yield little or no oil have great potentialities, and developments in these states, although perhaps of less immediate interest than those in regions where great pools now exist, may easily be of greater ultimate importance than the results of exploration closer to known fields. Not long ago, Montana had only a quarter of an oil pool, and that was regarded by many as an accident that had strayed from Wyoming. More recently, the northern line of Louisiana was a dead line that would not be crossed by any Louisiana operator who valued his reputation for sanity. Within the past few months, Colorado has shown that it is far from being a negligible factor in the oil supply of the Rocky Mountain states, and it is now known that western Kansas, long shunned by many reputable geologists and operators, should be reckoned with. There may be a vast difference between what a wildcat well yields and what the well signifies. The fact that no commercial production is encountered may be lamentable and may well be disastrous to an individual or a company, but the same well that spells ruin to one may convey to another the information that will result in opening a new field. In presenting the conclusions, in this paper, the writer recognizes fully the possibility of erroneous deductions, particularly since he has had contact with only a few of the wells that are mentioned. Information comes principally from the scout. maps and files maintained at the Geological Survey by M. E. Latimer and G. K. Drach, without whose cooperation this summary would not be possible, supplemented by some personal contact and second-hand information gained by. conversation and correspondence. However, it is felt that the data contain few errors, and that the conclusions are at least reasonable.

Recently published extensions to the mill-dump cutoff grade theory for joint open pit-concentrator operations lead to equations that must be simultaneously satisfied as a necessary condition for an optimal operating policy. These equations are parametrically dependent upon ore quality parameters, other than grade, relating to the ease of recovery of the disseminated mineral in the concentrator. Since it is not possible to treat quantities of ore corresponding to the size of selective mining units separately in the concentrator some mixing is inevitable and often deemed desirable in the interest of homogeneity of mill feed. This renders the calculation of cutoff grades for individual mining units futile; mining units must be grouped to form larger parcels that can be dealt with separately. In doing so an opportunity cost may be incurred; the loss of potential benefit that would result from such separate treatment. This matter is considered from a theoretical, qualitative, point of view. A numerical example then shows that a significant variability in the quality parameters can be tolerated without incurring such opportunity cost, provided sufficient knowledge is available concerning the distribution and effect of these variables to enable the use of effective mean values of these parameters in the cutoff grade calculation. Lack of such knowledge can have major consequences for the economics of the operation.

The effect of ultrasonic energy transmitted through a liquid on chrysotile asbestos was investigated. Ultrasonic energy was effective in fiberization of chrysotile crudes as well as standard grades of milled asbestos fibers. Treated samples of several grades of milled fibers had increased wet bulk volumes and decreased settling and filtration rates compared to untreated fibers. Ultrasonics may be a method for fiberization of chrysotile without decreasing length or use of chemical additives that alter surface properties. Cavitation of the liquid on the surface of fiber bundles is believed to be the cause of the fiberization. It was found that ultrasonic energy greatly increased the rate of precipitation of latex on asbestos. When chrysotile asbestos fibers require additional opening or fiberization, the usual method employed is some type of high speed impact or grinding to open the fibers and produce a larger surface area. These methods always cause some degradation in length due to breaking of fibers. In addition, the efficiency of mechanical methods decreases as the diameter of fiber bundles decreases. Chemical methods have been proposed and it is claimed that fiberization down to individual fibers of 200-300 A diam is possible with some wetting agents. However, large amounts of reagent are required, approximately EDWARD MARTINEZ is with Central Research Laboratories, American Smelting and Refining Co., South Plain-field, N.J. TP 63H226. Discussion of this paper, submitted in duplicate prior to Mar. 15, 1964, will appear in SME Transactions, September 1964, and AIME Transactions, 1964, vol. 229. 50 pct of the weight of fiber treated, and some of the wetting agent remains on the surface of the chrysotile and cannot be removed by any solvent which does not destroy the asbestos.' This investigation was directed at determining whether ultrasonic energy transmitted through a liquid would be effective in fiberizing chrysotile asbestos. Samples of asbestos crudes and commercially milled fibers were treated; settling and filtration rates of treated and untreated milled fibers were obtained. EQUIPMENT A Westinghouse Corp. ultrasonic cleaning system WEHH was used in this investigation. See Table I for a breakdown of this ultrasonic unit. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Fiberization of Chrysotile Crudes: Samples of chrysotile crudes were pulled apart with tweezers so that coarse bundles of fiber approximately 1/16 in. in diam were obtained. The bundles were put into a bottle with 200 ml of methanol and the mixture placed into the ultrasonic tank for 30 min at a power output of 1200 w. The test was repeated using water instead of methanol. During the irradiation it was noted that the surfaces of the bundles were being fiberized. The liquid eventually became cloudy with dispersed solids. Fig. 1 is an electron micrograph of the fibers, some reduced to unit dimensions, and a fine material released by the ultrasonic energy. The platy particles in Fig. 1 were identified by electron diffraction and differential thermal analysis as brucite, Mg(OH)2, which must have been intergrown in the chrysotile crudes. Electron micrographs of bulk specimens of chrysotile have shown a fine material filling the interstices between tubular fibers.2,3 Electron diffraction patterns of the fine material collected after ultrasonic treatment indicate that it is amorphous. After decanting the solution, bundles of chrysotile remained somewhat decreased in diameter. Continuing the ultrasonic irradiation of the remaining material resulted in additional fiberization. The opening of the fibers occurred in both methanol and water. Cavitation of the liquid by the ultrasonic energy is undoubtedly responsible for the fiberization. The design of piling platforms is addressed in BRE (2004) for both fine grained and coarse grained subgrades. However, for coarse grained subgrades, piling platform designs can often be overly conservative due to either conservative assumptions on soil friction angle, or concerns over density variations of granular fill, particularly for made-ground. This paper provides guidelines on economic design of piling platforms on coarse grained subgrade by providing recommendations on ground characterization, assessment of soil properties and the use of non-linear stiffness soil behavior. An innovative performance-based design approach is also introduced, utilizing proof rolling with associated testing and interpretation using small strain theory to overcome concerns regarding potential ground variability of made-ground. A case study is presented to demonstrate the successful application of this performance-based approach to avoid having to construct a new piling platform over a 2 ha area. Small strain, non-linear stiffness theory was used to enable a practical proof rolling pressure to be adopted without having to reach the design or ultimate operating pressure. The author considers that the performance-based approach adopted on the case study may be similarly applied to a range of other projects to derive economic solutions.

Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen, I'd like to take just a moment of your time before we examine the current position of the asbestos industry and its market outlook to take a searching look at the product itself. I feel that if we are to understand the problems that beset this basic mining and manufacturing industry and, more important, if we are to appreciate the solutions to these problems that I plan to put forward in a few moments' time, then we had better look at asbestos from the proper perspective. Asbestos has a unique combination of properties - properties not found in any other natural substance or man-made material. This has resulted in asbestos finding its way - in fact, being welcomed - into literally hundreds of applications.
