High-accuracy, solid-state digital reference barometers have proven to be well suited to conducting underground barometric pressure surveys. The only problem is their expense; at least A$4000 each. For this reason, and because barometric pressure surveys are not a routine undertaking, very few mines have been able to justify the purchase of suitable instruments. The author knows of only three Australian metalliferous mines that own them.However, this may soon change given the recent development of low-cost, mass-produced miniature barometric pressure transducers. These transducers were developed to provide an altimeter function in the latest generation of smartphones. The main purpose of the inbuilt altimeter function is to allow the smartphone to be aware of its altitude when the global positioning system satellite signal is lost.This paper describes a prototype barometer that was constructed using one of the most accurate of the latest generation of piezo-resistive smartphone barometric pressure transducers. The prototype instrument was constructed for less than five per cent of the cost of a commercially available digital reference barometer. The prototype was subsequently tested against a reference barometer at the University of Queensland’s Experimental Mine to verify its accuracy and suitability for measuring pressure differences between underground survey stations.It is expected that the instrument’s low cost will pave the way for barometric pressure surveys to become more commonly used in mines. In turn, the resulting improvement in knowledge of major underground pressure losses should allow mine ventilation officers and engineers to optimise their ventilation systems and potentially reduce overall operating costs.An alternative option would be to use a barometer-equipped smartphone as a survey instrument, provided that its inbuilt barometer module is sufficiently accurate.CITATION:Derrington, A S, 2015. "Stream-based microfluidic solvent extraction offers a novel alternative to bulk-scale mixer-settler operations. However present maximum throughputs are restrictive and there are engineering challenges that need to be overcome before the technology is robust. This is especially the case for mineral processing, where circuits must be able to handle variable feed streams with long retention times and where maintenance should be minimized. This paper highlights research directed at investigating and evaluating these challenges for actual mineral leach solutions of metal ions. Molecular and particulate channel fouling is discussed. Most extraction systems studied to date show no effects that would preclude use of the technology. For rare earth elements (REE) with fast extraction rates, scale-up of volumetric throughput to 100 L/h using suitable arrays of channels, microfluidic chips and modules is shown to be achievable using a small contactor (approx. 2 m3) platform. This requires only 2–3 % of the typical aqueous phase inventory and residence time used in an equivalent mixer-settler. For a circuit with 100 contactors, the overall residence time would be less than 1 h, using an aqueous inventory of 40 L.INTRODUCTIONHydrometallurgy is of pivotal importance in many mineral processing circuits around the world, with liquid-liquid solvent extraction (SX) a key step in the separation of many base metals (e.g. Cu and Ni), radioisotopes, precious metals, and the ‘technology’ metals, such as rare earth elements (REEs) (Ritcey & Ashbrook, 1979). The standard equipment for SX in mineral processing is the mixer-settler, in which liquid dispersions are created, by agitation, to increase the surface-to-bulk ratio and, thus increase the mass transfer rate between the liquid phases. In stream-based microfluidic SX (microSX), these high surface-to-volume ratios are achieved by contacting microscopic streams (Ciceri, Perera, & Stevens, 2014), rather than forming small droplets, so that phase disengagement can be accelerated (essentially instantaneous via branching of the two streams of liquid at a channel junction). MicroSX is profoundly different from bulk mixer-settler SX operations and offers exciting opportunities for processing hydrometallurgy solutions (Kriel, Holzner, Grant, Ash, Woollam, Ralston, & Priest, 2015; Priest, Zhou, Klink, Sedev, & Ralston, 2012). Nonetheless, the advantages of using microfluidic environments are presently balanced by very significant challenges relating to throughput, process control, coupling of stages, flow stability, and fouling. If these challenges can be met using smart chip designs, process control and clever engineering, high-value/low-volume SX processes stand to benefit greatly."

A minitest, consisting of an injection/production well and at least two observation wells designed to detect the arrival of injected fluid leached minerals, and nonideal flow, is considered in this report. The test goals are to determine the susceptibility of the host formation to uranium leaching, kinetic parameters to scale the process, and to facilitate site restoration. This report considers permeability and mineral heterogeneities and other oxidant-competing minerals. To circumvent these nonidealities, which obscure the results, methods of interpretation have been proposed and tested by a computer simulator. In complex cases, clear-cut methods of interpretation were not found; but in every case the design of a test most susceptible to interpretation has been considered. The minitest is operationally simple and can be completed in a short time. With the correct design and interpretation it can return information to evaluate economics, ensure satisfactory leachate performance, scale to larger operations, and to identify restoration problems.

The spatial coincidence of the seven anomalies is obvious, even though the self-potential is offset northward. Because the ratio, as an indicator of conductivity, is a relative estimate at best, concise interpretation is limited in almost every instance to the location of a conductor or conductor axis. When related to the initial phase of an exploration program, magnitudes and ratios similar to those obtained from any one of the methods described, would be sufficiently attractive to warrant further investigation. The compilation shown is an empirical comparison of actual field results and no emphasis has intentionally been placed on the relative merits of one method in respect to another. Too many additional factors, i.e., size, depth and conductivity of overburden, etc., that cannot unequivocally be answered, enter into such a comparison before a relative evaluation can be made.

The United States has not begun commercial operations to tap its largest poten-tial sources of oil supply - oil shale and coal. The reason is that domestic petrol-eum has been plentiful in the past and liquid products probably could be produced from it at the lowest cost. In view of the ever-increasing need for petroleum in the United States, the critical international situation threatening foreign supplies, the growing demands for steel, and the heavy costs to industry of constantly discovering and developing new oil fields, it is believed that the prompt development of a synthetic fuel industry based on oil shale and coal is not only requisite to safeguard our oil supply but is an economically sound course for the foreseeable future. To neglect its development is to close our eyes and minds to our own resources at a time when they are needed critically. It also is apparent now that neither the Government nor industry would be taking any considerable economic risk in starting the initial plants, especially as measured against their potential value in meeting critical oil and chemical demands and in building a new industry in the West.

Introduction The Sleeper mine is a near-surface gold mine located in a remote area 56 km (35 air miles) northwest of Winnemucca, NV (Fig. 1). The deposit was discovered in 1984 by an Amax exploration geologist. Favorable drilling results led to feasibility studies and metallurgical testwork. Final evaluation of the mine potential proceeded very quickly. The project received Amax board approval in July 1985. Eight months later, the process plant was fully operational. The first gold ($1 million) was shipped one month later, in March 1986. Total plant capital was $27 million. Payback was achieved in six months. The Sleeper mine was expected to produce 1.6 t (53,000 oz) of gold and 1.3 t (41,000 oz) of silver annually. However, the ore body exceeded all expectations. Production for the first 10 months of operation amounted to 4 t (128,000 oz) of gold and 2.9 t (94,000 oz) of silver. Direct cash operating costs are in the $1.77/g ($55 per oz) range. Amax is actively conducting exploration nearby for additional reserves to extend the mine's life. (See update on page 242.) Geology The Sleeper gold deposit is located on the northwestern flank of the Slumbering Hills and in the Awakening Mining District. Rocks exposed in the vicinity of the deposit are interbedded siltstones, sandstones, and limestones of Triassic age. They are overlain by latite lava flows and tuffs of Tertiary age. Dikes and sills of latite and andesite intrude the sedimentary rocks. Quaternary deposits of mostly sand with minor gravel and clay cover a pediment containing the gold deposit. The sedimentary and volcanic rock units have been transsected and offset by extensive north- northeast trending faults and less abundant northwest trending faults. Both fault systems fractured and prepared the ground for subsequent invasions of mineral-bearing hot spring geothermal waters. The hot spring systems produced widespread hydrothermal alteration and gold mineralization at silicified centers near feeder fault structures. The deposit is hosted by siltstone and latite that have been hydrothermally brecciated. The main breccia is elongated north-northeasterly. The hydrothermal breccia zones appear to dip steeply to the west. Gold mineralization consists of native gold and electrum deposited in two or more high-grade quartz-breccia veins. "Water evaluation and management during mining exploration and operational activities is crucial to minimise direct and indirect operational costs and also in delivering mining companies the less tangible, but equally critical æsocial license to operateÆ.Mining is often carried out in remote areas, where the mine will be the most significant and visible user and potential contaminator of water resources. However, wherever it is located, a mineÆs use of water must be managed in the context of two key aspects: the natural parameters of the resource; its abundance, its temporal variability and its chemical and physical qualities other users of the resource; other industry, potable water supplies and ecological requirements of local habitats.It is vital, therefore, that this commodity be assessed to an appropriate degree to help establish the viability and sustainability of the mining project and identify those other stakeholders who may be affected by the mining companyÆs activities.This paper outlines the background to catchment-scale model and presents a cost-effective method for establishing a robust water baseline and creating a water management tool to be used throughout whole mine life cycle. Numerical surface and groundwater modelling has long been established as a tool for reactive management, following collation of yearsÆ worth of data. Now, using freely available remote sensing data and desk study information, analytical modelling techniques can be used cost effectively to provide mining companies with a tool for assessing and managing their water consumption requirements at the outset of a new project venture.The paper includes a selection of case studies to show how the use of analytical modelling can be used as an evaluation and management tool to help not only assess general watershed parameters and water availability but also how it can be used as a tool to provide decision makers with the information to complete æwhat if?Æ scenario assessments. "A Ventilation on Demand (VOD) system has been optimized and maintained at Glencore’s Nickel Rim South Mine (NRS) in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada for the past seven years. The system monitors and controls air quality and quantity through real-time, dynamic automation of primary fans, secondary fans, automated airflow regulators, and air monitoring instrumentation with VentSim™ CONTROL, a VOD software. This paper will focus on the implementation of testing procedures and system maintenance methods. Overall, the results show a consistent reduction in energy usage.INTRODUCTIONThe Ventilation on Demand (VOD) system at Glencore’s Nickel Rim South (NRS) mine in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, involves the control of two 2,980 kW centrifugal surface exhaust fans with Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), three 335 kW vane-axial surface intake fans with VFDs, 21 automated airflow regulators, six automated dampers, seven automatic doors and 198 underground auxiliary fans with ON/OFF starters. Additionally, the system monitors airflow at 48 locations, carbon monoxide (CO) at 40 locations, nitrogen dioxide (NO2) at 21 locations, and dry bulb and wet bulb temperature at 21 locations. The VOD system is also integrated with a tagging and tracking system to modulate the ventilation system automatically and in real time according to the presence and position of the personnel and vehicles. The tracking system comprises of 75 vehicle tags with diesel status and hydraulic status (ON or OFF), 440 personnel tags, and 200 tracking zones. Finally, it also involves the configuration and updating of 55 level plan and interactive procedures and 24 daily scheduled events. NRS currently uses VentSim™ CONTROL, Ekahau Tracking and PI Datalink to control, monitor, and configure their VOD system."

The gas-combustion retort developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines at the Rifle Oil Shale Project near Rifle, Colo., is a continuous, gravity-feed retort. The heat required to convert the kerogen in the oil shale to liquid oil is generated by the combustion of product gas and carbonaceous residue remaining on the retorted shale after the kerogen has been converted to oil, gas, and residue. A study of the effects of the process variables on retort operation, product yields, and product properties is important to the successful solution of the problems encountered in the development of a satisfactory process. Statistical methods were used to design the experiments and analyze the effects of the rate of shale throughput, the composition of dilution gas, the height of the shale bed above the air entry, air-gas distributor design, shale size range, and the ratios of the flow rates of the various gas streams entering the retort to the rate of shale throughput.

MODELLING FOR DESIGN AND CONTROL AT KALGOORLIE NICKEL SMELTER Modelling at KNS has been driven by a need to have better tools to answer questions about control, design and optimisation of the plant. This paper describes a number of modelling tools developed for use at KNS and how the development of modelling tools fits with a design and control strategy. In the area of control, a thermodynamic model has been developed to allow process parameters to be calculated. The model allows for the automatic selection of data from a laboratory data base, desired operating set points are input and the operating parameters are calculated. The model has the ability to adjust the burner efficiency and the furnace heat loss depending upon conditions. To assist with the testing of proposed furnace design changes, various mathematical models of the burner and shaft have been created using PHOENICS. These models are particularly well suited to combustion heat transfer and flow aspects of both the burners and shaft. Validation of these models have been based on novel sampling and measuring techniques in the shaft and also by using scale and cold models. Overall plant energy and cost structures can be analysed using a flowsheet simulation, developed to evaluate potential alterations to the plant flowsheet. This model system allows the global evaluation of process changes.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the resource availability of titanium minerals from 63 mines and deposits in 12 market economy countries. These mines and deposits contain, at the demonstrated resource level, an estimated 438 million metric tons (mt) of titanium dioxide (TiO2) in the minerals rutile, ilmenite, leucoxene, and anatase. An additional 314 million mt of TiOz is available from inferred resources. If all titanium minerals and other recovered heavy minerals are sold at total costs at least equal to the January 1984 market prices, approximately 200 million mt of contained TiO2 could be recovered in total. In terms of mineral concentrates, this equals approximately 11 million mt of rutile concentrate, 187 million mt of ilmenite concentrate, 3 million mt of leucoxene concentrate, 13 million mt of synthetic rutile concentrate (in addition to the ilmenite), and 89 million mt of titanium slag. The study indicates that world resources of low-cost rutile are declining. In order to maintain future supply for high-grade titanium resources, alternate sources will need to be developed, which may include higher cost rutile mines, Brazilian anatase deposits, increased production from slag operations, or more synthetic rutile capacity from ilmenite resources, which are abundant.

Radiation plays a critical role in the thermal behaviour of hydrometallurgical process equipment. This effect is particularly important when designing refractory lined equipment used in pressure leach/oxidation processes. In order to simplify this non-linear mode of heat transfer, the effects of radiation had previously been incorporated in an equivalent convective film coefficient in finite element methods (FEM). This prior method omits the effects of radiosity, a critical aspect of radiation heat transfer, which affects the design of refractory lining systems in autoclave vessels. Given that 60% of the heat loss in actual plant practice of an autoclave is due to radiation, reliability in the FEM is therefore impacted. This study validates the use of radiosity in FEM through thermal loading using a combination of simple geometries to be applied to complex environments such as vessel nozzle clusters. The added benefits of using a radiosity load includes an increase in confidence in thermal distribution results, greater accuracy in determining appropriate refractory lining systems, weld overlay sizing, and increased accuracy in structural analysis.

Experiments were conducted to evaluate the response characteristics of commercially available gas, smoke and flame sensors to fires of common combustible mine materials. The experiments were conducted in the large-scale fire gallery located at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Lake Lynn Laboratory in Fairchance, PA, using ponderosa pine, red oak, Douglas fir, high and low volatile coals, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) conveyor belts, No. 2 diesel fuel and diesel exhaust. All the experiments (except those using No. 2 diesel fuel and the diesel exhaust tests) were conducted in a similar manner, with combustible materials heated rapidly by electrical strip heaters, producing smoldering fires that quickly transitioned into flaming fires. The sensors included a diffusion-type carbon monoxide (CO) sensor, photoelectric- and ionization-type smoke sensors, a video smoke/flame detector and an optical flame detector. Simultaneous measurements were obtained for average gas concentrations, smoke mass concentrations and smoke optical densities in order to quantify the levels of combustion products at the alert and alarm times of the sensors. Because the required sensor alarm levels are 10 ppm and 0.044 m-1 optical density for CO and smoke sensors, respectively, the different sensor alarms are compared to the time at which the CO and smoke reached these alarm levels (Litton et al., 1991). In addition, the potential impact of using smoke sensors that have met the performance standards from accredited testing laboratories is also evaluated using the response of an Underwriters’ Laboratory (UL)-approved combination photoelectric/ionization smoke detector. The results are discussed relative to fire sensor needs that can have a positive impact on mine fire safety.

The need for a simple, very sensitive, and accurate method for the determination of benzene in blood and urine was evident throughout a recent study of chronic benzene (C6H6) poisoning conducted cooperatively by the United States Bureau of Mines, The Barrett Company, and the producers of benzene. A combustion method which will be described in a later publication, end a previously described5/ adaptation of Smyth's method were developed and used during that investigation. The adaptation of Smyth's method gave satisfactory results when dealing with exposure conditions that produced chronic poisoning in a comparatively few days, but it was time-consuming and lacked the accuracy necessary for a study of the absorption, distribution, and fate of benzene in the body during exposure to threshold concentrations of benzene vapor in air. The combustion procedure was satisfactory from the standpoint of sensitivity but was cumbersome, intricate, time-consuming, and required the use of special and somewhat expensive physical and. chemical apparatus. Following the termination of this study of chronic poisoning, possibilities for developing better methods occurred, and these have been investigated by the Bureau of Mines with the aid of Relief Works Division personnel. A microcolorimetric method for the determination of benzene in air has been described recently.6/ The present report deals with the adaptation of this new colorimetric method to the determination

Mention of any company or product does not constitute endorsement by NIOSH. ABSTRACT Proximity detection systems (PDSs) for mobile machines have the potential to decrease injuries and fatalities. Early adopters of the technology have identified some challenges, which presents an opportunity to explore and improve the integration of mobile PDSs in underground coal mines. The current study applied the task-technology fit framework to investigate the fit between mobile PDS technology and mining relative to health and safety, from the perspective of leaders at two coal mines. Quantitative results from the study show that mine leaders evaluated mobile PDS favorably for training and ease of use, system feedback, user authorization and experience, and less favorably for safety, compatibility, task completion, and reliability. Qualitative results reveal specific task, mine, and system characteristics that may have influenced leaders' evaluations. The study includes considerations for safe technology integration. INTRODUCTION Striking, pinning, and crushing accidents related to mobile machines continue to be a major concern in underground coal mining. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) linked 22 of the 75 underground mine fatalities reported between 2011 and 2015 to power haulage [1]. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) asserts that proximity detection systems for mobile machines (mobile PDSs) could help to prevent these types of fatal injuries [2]. Mobile PDSs use a collision avoidance technology that allows the mine to establish hazard zones and employ electromagnetic sensors to detect workers equipped with a miner-wearable component (MWC) working near these mining machines. The authors characterize a mobile PDS as an automated technology, because—in line with Lee & See’s [3] definition of automation—a mobile PDS actively “selects data, transforms information, makes decisions, or controls processes” (p. 50). When the system detects workers in the established hazard zones, it issues alerts and slows or stops the mobile machine. Even though a mobile PDS may be a viable and promising safety solution, there are still a number of questions regarding how well this automated technology will fit with mining tasks and conditions. Using a mixed-methods approach, the current study explored factors that influence the fit of mobile PDSs in the underground mining environment.

Introduction There is a continual economic push to increase the productivity of mobile material handling equipment used in open pit mines. This includes the largest electrical machines: excavators (draglines and shovels) and haul trucks (Figure 1). Existing DC drive systems used on this type of equipment are a mature technology. They have no further economic potential to accommodate larger equipment be-cause of the high maintenance costs and the trade-off between power, speed and space limitations of their DC traction mo-tors. In recent years the large-scale introduction of AC drives in the rail transportation sector1,and the availability of poworful GTO and IGBT modules have led to the devolopment of compact, powerful, an drugged AC inverter drives specifically adapted to the mining market2,3. The major advantage of AC drives stems from the squirrel cage induction motor which eliminates the DC commutator. This leads directly to higher speed, increased power density, higher reliability, greater efficiency and lower maintenance of the traction motors. In the context of excavators and haul trucks, additional benofits driving the move to AC are (i) increased production rate due to higher machine speed, and power density, (ii) increased reliability and lower cost inverters using 3.3 kV IGBT's, (iii) active front-end (AFE) technology that improves compatibility with the mine power grid and an proved dynamic response,(iv) intelligent converter design that provides increased fault tolerance, (v) contextual maintenance software that facilitates trouble-shooting, and (vi) remote diagnostic capabilities. This paper describes how these and other features of AC drives lead to higher productivity in mining shovels, draglines, and haul trucks. Minimize the cost per ton of material moved The overall goal that drives design and sales of excavators and haul trucks is the constant requirement to reduce the cost per ton of material moved. Whether this involves blasting, loading trucks, or hauling material to the crusher or waste dump, equipment that reduces the cost per ton of material moved contributes to a more profitable operation. An accurate determination of the true cost per ton to move material must consider every aspect of the equipment and the circumstances under which it is used. Procurement and capital costs, fuel, operating, and maintenance costs over the useful life, and eventually the cost of scrapping should all be taken into account to determine the real cost per ton of moving material. We will focus on two broad areas that relate to the equipment itself; factors influencing the amount of material moved (Table I) and factors influencing the cost of material moved (Table II). Emphasis will be given to those elements in the tables that most influence the productivity of excavators and haul trucks due to the application of AC drive technology. Maximize the amount of material moved Maximize production rate he production rate refers to the quantity of material that can be loaded or moved per hour. This generally involves larger, faster, and more powerful equipment that operates more reliably to minimize down-time. AC motors Figure 2 compares the hoist motor speed-torque response of two 77 t (85 short ton) shovels, one AC the other DC. The absence of commutation limits on the AC motors enables the AC shovel to operate with a greater area under the speed-torque curve, resulting in faster lowering speeds and reduced times for the swing to return to the pit. This is especially important for short swing angles where the operator may have to wait for the dipper to lower. Reducing the cycle time by 6 to 8 seconds at the shovel translates into an increase in shovel production of about 20%. A general survey of the mineral industries of the Black Hills is being made by the Bureau or Mines, but this report is confined to the tin deposits of that region. Because of the strategic importance of tin in a national emergency, special attention was given in the field to deposits of this metal. The present paper outlines the procedure that would be required for determining the potentialities of the most promising deposits as emergency sources of tin and gives estimates of the cost of sampling and rehabilitating some of the old tin mines. Tin mining in the Black Hill was quiescent in 1938. Tin occurs in two areas inn the region. The deposits have received considerable attention, and since 1884 numerous articles have been written about them. It is estimated that between 7 and 15 million dollars has been spent in promotion expenses, acquiring claims, development work, and equipment; production, has totaled about 160 long tons of metallic tin worth about $95,000.3/
