MINE surveying and engineering at the various properties of the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company has developed and increased in importance steadily as mining methods have changed and expanded, both in the development of ore bodies and in the methods and styles of stoping. Most important to satisfactory engineering practice, and secondary -only to accuracy and precision, is the preservation of all data relative to surveys and calculations so that it is readily available for use at all times and in -such form that it is permanent, easily found, and usable. The first consideration for a proper, accurate, and practical start for surveys and efficient engineering at any property is an accurate triangulation net and system of co-ordinates. This has been our practice and the first step seas to select a base line, readily accessible and easily measured, situated preferably on an even grade where the difference of elevation between the two -end monuments was not too great and -the distance was long enough for practical use. Permanent concrete monuments were built for these base-line points so constructed that they could be easily recognized and were visible. Precise levels were run on this base 'line and the elevation (sea level datum) if possible was established at each end monument. The distance was carefully measured many times, back and forward, by using a tape that had been standardized by the National Bureau of Standards. Developing natural aggregate resources (sand, gravel, and stone) creates environmental impacts. A systems analysis method has been designed to characterize the components of the environmental system, identify potential impacts to those systems, and evaluate the extent of those impacts. The step-wise method consists of problem definition, data collection, preliminary conceptualization and characterization, additional data collection, data analysis, and refinement. The method requires analyzes of various systems making up the environment, including land surface, geomorphic, subsurface, and groundwater systems. After system characterization is complete, the method focuses on identifying and evaluating potential environmental impacts to determine acceptable mining strategies.

TO assist the mining industry in attacking problems of water control, the U. S. Geological Survey has begun a program of research in mining hydrology. In certain fundamental respects water control is similar to development of water supplies from wells or to the drainage of agricultural lands, as many of the tools developed in recent years for quantitative ground-water problems are applicable, with modification, to mine-water problems. In 1952 a 30-day pumping test conducted jointly by the Eureka Corp. Ltd. and the Defense Minerals Exploration Agency provided an opportunity to gain knowledge concerning water movements around a flooded mine shaft. The methods of analyzing the data may be used as a guide for the evaluation of similar problems elsewhere. The Fad shaft of the Eureka Corp. is on Ruby Hill, 1 1/2 miles west of Eureka, Nev. The shaft was completed at a depth of 2465 ft in November 1947 at a site adjacent to the downfaulted block in which the ore was found. As the drift on the 2250 level progressed toward the ore zone, a large flow of water was encountered after the Martin fault was intersected. This flow exceeded the installed pump capacity, and an unsuccessful attempt to recover the shaft and the 2250 level was made in 1948.1, 2 Geology and Hydrology: The complex structure of Ruby Hill is that of an anticline broken first by thrust faulting and later by normal faults. The present orebody comprises several mineralized zones within a block of the Eldorado limestone of middle Cambrian age which was downfaulted 1400 to 1600 ft, and it may be related to a similar body mined at a higher level south of the Ruby Hill fault. At the depth of the largest zone of ore the block is roughly rectangular in shape, about 1000 ft wide and 1500 ft long, and dips about 30" NE, see Fig. 1. It is apparently bounded on the south by the Ruby Hill fault, on the east by the Jackson fault, on the north by the Martin fault, and the west by the Bowman fault. Within the block, but between the Ruby Hill and the Martin faults, are the Office and Adams Hills faults; west of the block and the Bowman fault are the Albion and Spring Valley faults. There are many conflicting reports concerning the water-yielding characteristics of the Eldorado limestone and the condition of the fault zones, that is, whether they are open or tight. However, the diamond-drill records indicate that open spaces as much as 2 or 3 ft across were encountered, and considerable cementing and lining of holes was necessary to maintain circulation of drilling fluid. There is also evidence that the Eldorado limestone was cavernous where it was mined in the early days south of the Ruby Hill fault. At the site of the Fad shaft the formations encountered from the surface down included the Pogonip limestone, Dunderberg shale, Hamburg limestone, and Secret Canyon shale. These formations did not yield large quantities of water to the shaft. The Pogonip limestone, which appears to be permeable and might yield water elsewhere, is above the water table in the vicinity of the shaft. The Secret Canyon shale, immediately overlying the Eldorado in some places but in most places separated from it by the Geddes limestone,3 is apparently tight and does not transmit water. During the 30-day test period the shale briefly confined the water in the underlying formations so that artesian conditions were observed in drillholes E and F, which are cased into the Eldorado limestone, whereas unconfined conditions were observed in drillholes B, C, and D, which were open to the shale. The Geddes limestone, which normally lies between the Secret Canyon shale and the Eldorado limestone, was not encountered in the Fad shaft. The Geddes, a flaggy, fractured limestone, is reported capable of yielding large volumes of water. Water stored in the interstices of this thin-bedded limestone within the Ruby Hill fault zone on the 1200 level of the Locan shaft drowned the pumps in 1923 when the Richmond-Eureka Mining Co. attempted to explore the area along the fault. Eldorado limestone was not encountered in the Fad shaft. In the ore-block area the Eldorado limestone was not entirely offset from other water-yielding formations by movement along the Bowman fault; therefore it may be hydraulically connected with the other formations. Adjacent to the Ruby Hill, Jackson, and Martin faults, the Eldorado lies in contact with other possible water-yielding formations. One of these, the Prospect Mountain quartzite, is separated from the Eldorado by thin, sheared, and broken beds of the Geddes within the Ruby Hill fault zone. A limited examination by the author of the Prospect Mountain quartzite in the Richmond mine at a higher level and south of the Ruby Hill fault indicates that the quartzite is poorly permeable. The monzonite mass south of the quartzite would be a further barrier to the flow of water. The poor permeability of this area is substantiated by records of levels at which water was encountered south of the Ruby Hill fault. In view of the normally low rate of ground-water recharge, if this desert area had been permeable, water levels could not have been maintained at altitudes of many hundred feet above the present water table west and north of Ruby Hill. Thus the ore-bearing block of Eldorado limestone is in contact with possible water-yielding rocks on at least two sides, and if the fault zones are possible conduits for water circulation the geologic and hydrologic conditions are suitable for the infinite-aquifer type of analysis as used and modified here. Conventional waterflooding often is uneconomic in highly fractured reservoirs because of the gross bypassing of the reservoir oil by injected water. Imbibition and pressure pulse flooding have been used in at least one fractured reservoir in an attempt to achieve better oil recovery performance. This paper presents the results of laboratory flow tests conducted on large cores to evaluate the possible applicability of these methods (particularly pressure pulse flooding) to different types of reservoir systems. Test data were obtained on both water-wet and oil-wet systems, and on systems having two widely different levels of compressibility and flow capacity. Results indicate that pressure pulse recoveries from fractured reservoirs will likely not exceed 5 to 10 per cent pore space with maximum response achieved during the first pulse cycle. Improved recovery by this method is possible from both oil-wet and water-wet reservoirs. Comparable saturation distributions during imbibition and pressure pulse production suggest that an initial pressure pulse cycle to speed production response would not interfere with subsequent imbibition flooding in water-wet reservoirs. INTRODUCTION There is a steady increase in the number of fluid injection projects being initiated each year to improve oil and gas recovery over that obtained by primary production mechanisms. Experience gained in different geographical areas and with different recovery methods is teaching that reservoir anatomy is one of the more important factors controlling the success or failure of such projects. Fractured formations appear to be the rule rather than the exception, especially in carbonate reservoirs. Conventional methods of fluid injection, whether it is waterflooding, gas injection or miscible flooding, have limited applicability to highly fractured reservoirs because of the severe bypassing of reservoir fluids. The result is early breakthrough of the injected fluid and rapidly increasing ratios of injected to in-place fluid with an undesirable effect on return on investment. Thus, innovations to conventional methods must be developed if recovery from fractured reservoirs is to be optimized. One new method proposed for application to highly fractured reservoirs is pressure pulse waterflooding. Although pressure pulsing with gas has been suggested' and rested in at least one reservoir; the Sohio Oil Co. is generally credited with the development and testing of pressure pulsing in conjunction with waterflooding. Publications" of Sohio's waterflood operations in the Spra-berry Trend indicate that the idea for pressure pulse flooding evolved from a critical analysis of the disappointing early performance of their flood initiated in a portion of the trend in April, 1961. This flood was planned to take advtantage of imbibiltion and high pressure gradients across the reservoir matrix blocks (unfractured Mocks of the reservoir rock which are visualized to be generally surrounded 'by the fracture system) evaluated in pilot tests by the Atlantic Richfield Co.5 and Humble Oil & Refining Co.' However, the early recovery and pressure performance of this flood indicalted that high pressure gradients induced between the fracture system and the centers of the matrix blocks were forcing water into the periphery of the blocks and temporarily interfering with the counter-current flow of oil due to imbibition. Fill-up in the blocks was occurring with re-solution of the free gas phase as pressures climbed above the original reservoir bubble point. It appeared that cessation of water injection to permit the capillary forces to become dominant and that expansion of the rock and its contained fluids during pressure reduction might aid in expulsion of oil from the rock matrix into the fractures. Subsequent production performance. aflter cessation of injection, proved this hypotheslis correct. Thus, pressure pulse waterflooding was born. Pressure pulse flooding appears to have several advan'tages over imbibition type flooding in highly fractured reservoirs. First, all wells may be used for water injection which should hasten fill-up and achieve a more rapid increase in reservoir pressure. Second, because of increased injection pressures and rates, flooding gradients will force water into the reservoir matrix more rapidly than would be achieved by imbibition alone. Third, during the pressure depletion cycle of the flood, the compressibility of the system, which has been increased by resolution of the free gas phase, provides energy for the displacement of oil at a rate greater than would correspond to countercurrent flow during imbibition. Fourth, during depletion all wells may be put on production, thus contributing to higher oil withdrawal rates on a reservoir-wide basis. One possible disadvantage of pressure pulse flooding as compared to imbibition floodling, however, is that the outer periphery of each matrix block is flooded to a residual or near residual oil saturation during the Water lnjection stage. As summarized in a re- cent symposium of the Electrochemical Society on "Mechanical Properties of Inter metallic Compound", most of the experimental evidence regarding the mechanical behavior of intermetallic compounds centers about the effect of temperature on the hardness and ductility of polycrystalline specimens. The available data reveal that the plastic behavior of intermetallic compounds might be rationalized in terms of the usual dislocation mechanisms appropriate to a solid solutions providing the additional complexities arising from crystal structure, long-range ordering, short-range ordering, and defect lattices are taken into consideration. It is apparent, however, in terms of the history on a solid solutions, that a complete detailed mechanistic rationalization of dislocation processes may not be possible until the deformation processes are studied in single crystals of intermetallic compounds. The present paper contains a preliminary report on the plastic behavior of single crystals of the hexagonal Ag-A1 intermetallic phase over a wide range of temperatures. The results confirm the thesis that single crystal data provide a most effective method of identifying operative dislocation mechanisms in intermetallic compounds. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Several factors prompted the selection of the hexagonal Ag-A1 intermetallic phase for this preliminar investigation on the plastic properties of single crystals of intermetallic compounds: 1) This phase has a wide solubility range5 which would permit future investigations on the effect of composition and axial ratios on slip mechanisms. 2) Although it undoubtedly exhibits short-range ordering (or clustering) this intermetallic phase is free from complexities arising from long-range ordering.6 3) Since the atomic radii of aluminum and silver are practically identical, the possible complications due to Cottrell locking are minimized. 4)Whereas the dislocations on the basal planes are expected to dissociate into Shockley partials and are thus susceptible to Suzuki locking, those on the prismatic planes probably remain complete. 5) The axial ratio, being 1.61, is almost ideal, suggesting that short-range ordering may be almost spherically symmetrical. The present investigation was conducted exclusively with the hexagonal Ag-A1 alloy containing 33 at. pct Al. Preliminary investigations revealed that this alloy undergoes basal slip by the (0001)

A grain boundary in a metal interacts with second-phase particles, which exert a pinning force (first estimated by Zener) on the boundary opposing its motion. We have computed the shape of boundaries which interact with more or less spherical second-phase particles and have constructed a soap-film model to reproduce the shape of the boundary surface. An important result is that measurement of this shape allows the pressure, or driving force, on the boundary to be measured. We hare applied this technique to grain boundaries in two alloys and hate measured the pinning force exerted by single second-phase jwrticles on the boundaries. It is in good agreement with Zener&apos;s estimate. J\. boundary between two grains, or two bulk phases, interacts with small inclusions or particles of a second phase, whether they are gas or solid. This interaction means that the boundary, forced to migrate by a difference in free energy between the material of the two grains or phases which it separates, exerts a force on a particle which it touches, tending to drag it forward. (The movement of inclusions through metals under the influence of this force, has, in fact, been observed. 1-3) Equally, the particle can be thought of as exerting a pinning force on the boundary, tending to hold it back. Zener (in a celebrated private communication4) first realized that this interaction, and the resulting pinning force, existed. His calculation of its magnitude was crude but adequate: a spherical inclusion of radius r blanks off an area nr2 of the boundary on which it sits; since the boundary has an energy of rMM x per unit area, the blanlung-olf decreases the energy of the system by MM: this energy is returned to the system if the boundary is pulled free from the inclusion— a forward movement of the boundary by a distance r will do this—so that the maximum pinning force is Trrym.M- A similar argument can be made for inter-phase boundaries. The nature of the particle itself did not enter this, or two subsequent treatments.5,6 When it is considered, tic leifthe energyoftheb a) The boundary may enter and pass through the particle if the energy of the boundary is lower within the particle than in the matrix. Fig. l(r/). Certain coherent precipitate particles behave like this. h) More usually, the boundary will bend round the particle, enveloping and bypassing it. Fig. l(b). In doing so, it changes the structure and energy of the interface between the particle and its matrix. This means that the boundary does not touch the particle surface at right angles, as early treatments assumed,5&apos;9 but at some angle a which depends on this change in surface energy of the particle, and can be calculated from the equilibrium of surface tensions. Most precipitate particles and inclusions behave like this. Gas bubbles or liquid drops can be regarded as belonging to either group. The progress of bypassing is conveniently measured by the angle shown in Fig. 1. When the nature of the particle is ignored, its maximum pinning force is exerted when - 45 deg. When it is considered, this critical value of is found to depend on a and thus on the nature of the particle. The maximum pinning force lies between nryMM and 2jtjMM (Appendix 1). not very different from Zener&apos;s result. In reality, a boundary between crystals has a specific energy and tension which varies with the orientation of the boundary. Furthermore, recent experiments7 indicate that such a boundary is not atom-ically smooth, but has steps on it: migration of the boundary corresponds to the sweeping of these steps across the boundary surface, like the Frank model of crystal growth from the vapor. This means that the interaction of a boundary with particles should really be considered in terms of the way in which particles hinder the movement of these steps. To suppose a grain boundary or interphase boundary to be smooth, and to ignore the variation of its energy with orientation, is to liken it to a soap film. The advantage of this soap film approximation, which we have used throughout this paper, is that interaction energies and boundary shapes can be calculated easily. We have done this by numerical computation and by using a soap film model, and have compared the results with grain boundaries in an aluminum-based and a copper-based alloy. It turns out that the shape of the boundary which bulges between particles allows the pressure an it to be calculated; that is, the local driving force an the boundary can be measured. This has allowed us to check the Zener relationship experimentally.

Geostatistical simulation has been widely used in mineral resource classification of metalliferous deposits based on international standards such as JORC code which is one of the most extensively used around the world for reporting the mineral resources and ore reserves alongside with objectives of the companies (Sadeghi, Madani and Carranza, 2015). However, the modeling process becomes challenging whenever the relationship between the variables of interest is complicated and cumbersome to model. This characteristic sometimes manifests itself in complex spatial and global cross-correlation measures, deeply depending on the formation and genesis of the deposit. The objective then is to generate the models that not only reproduces these significant characteristics, but also, it leads to a better understanding of a mineral resource estimation and successive decision-makings. In this respect, there are different approaches taking into account the spatial correlation structures, for which can be classified as independent simulation, co-simulation, and factor-based methodologies. In this paper, three techniques: Turning Bands Independent Simulation (TBSIM), Turning Bands Co-Simulation (TBCOSIM) and Projection Pursuit Multivariate Transform (PPMT); from those aforementioned approaches are selected to model two cross-correlated variables (Iron and Aluminum Oxide) belonging to an Iron ore deposit located in Brazil, in order to examine which methodology better reproduces the corresponding complexity in terms of local correlation measure. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Sea floor hydrothermal activity in the Okinawa Trough is considered a modern analog to ancient Kuroko-type volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits. Recent scientific drilling projects at active hydrothermal fields have enabled us to conduct comparative studies on hydrothermal clay minerals between ancient and modern systems. Zonal distributions of clay minerals below the sea floor of an active hydrothermal field have been revealed, which is represented by the distinctive assemblage of clay minerals. Zone 1 consists mainly of montmorillonite and sometimes of kaolinite; Zone 2 consists of chlorite and chlorite-smectite mixed-layer mineral; and Zone 3 is represented by the co-occurrence of illite and chlorite, from shallow to deep. This zonal distribution is likely to be in accordance with that reported previously for the Kuroko-type ore deposit. Similarities are also recognised in chemical compositions of illite and chlorite, which are both abundant clay minerals in the vicinity of the ore deposit. While illite would be formed by interaction with the hydrothermal ore fluid, the formation of Mg-rich chlorite is attributed to Mg metasomatism caused by the involvement of sea water. Further studies, especially focusing on interactions between fluid and solid phases, would significantly promote our understanding of dynamic processes for the formation of VMS depositsCITATION:Ishibashi, J and Miyoshi, Y, 2015. Editor’s note: This is the second part of a two-part series on how mine geologists added about 141t (4.53 million oz) at Newmont Mining’s gold operations in Nevada during 2003. Part one (ME, July2004, pp. 19-26) showed how cross-functional teamwork among mine geologists, engineers, metallurgists and operators added $65 million in revenues at Newmont’s Gold Quarry Mine. Part two deals with how this same cross-functional team added about 25.8 t (830,000 oz) of gold reserves and two years of life at the company’s LoneTree Mine. This was done through improved reconciliation methods, pit optimization designs and updated geotechnical parameters. Part two also discusses how Newmont’s Nevada mine personnel added about 62.2 t (2 million oz) of gold reserves at its Twin Creeks Mine, extending the mine’s life by several years. Two three-lane highway tunnels, 700 and 2900 m long, make up the driven tunnels portion of Melbourne City Link. Tunnel construction, using design-construct delivery, commenced in May 1996. Construction required excavation through varying rock conditions; temporary support included ground freezing, pipe-spiling, steel sets, and rock bolts. Permanent support for the tunnels required both drained and undrained tunnel cross sections using unreinforced concrete. This paper reviews the construction methods, and highlights some of the not-so-standard designs developed while construction was underway.

The technique of Stabilising Columns (product names are for example "Stabilisierungssaulen" (STS) or "Coplan Stabilisierungs-verfahren" (CSV)) is gradually becoming well accepted for ground improvement. The installation, dimensioning and quality control are standardized by DGGT (German Association for Geotechnique), working committee 2.8, of which until now only part one exists for dry columns. This paper describes the installation and testing of stabilising columns for a ground improvement project. To achieve comparable results in testing both ready mixed concrete and dry binder had been used for production.

New exhaust control techniques and devices may be necessary to meet future diesel particulate matter emission standards in underground coal mines. This paper reviews conventional work practices and devices used to control diesel exhaust emissions, and new techniques being tested by the US Bureau of Mines. Discussions will center on important work practices and on the function and efficiency of exhaust aftertreatment devices. An industry-government cooperative research project to develop and test an exhaust aftertreatment system for part 36 equipment is also discussed.

The tremendous growth in grinding mill size and horsepower during the 70s demanded advancements in gear cutting technology and equipment for the 80s. A new standard in gear cutting machines is now used to generate-cut large open gear sets to over 12.2 m (40 ft) in diameter at an AGMA quality level much higher than the accepted levels a short five years ago. The precision of the resulting gear set assures maximum tooth contact with the resultant longer gear set life.

Recent developments made in the Gintsvetmet Institute in the field of autogenous smelting processes have confirmed that autogenous smelting continues to be the main prospective technology for pyrometallurgical processing of sulfide raw materials. This technology ensures energy conservation and environmental safety conforming to the current world standards for production of heavy non-ferrous metals. Two alternative processes of single-stage autogenous smelting producing white metal as well as high-basic ferrite-calcium slags have been developed and can be recommended for technical modernization of Russian copper smelters.

Introduction and Historical Background Although both sluices and devices using a simple flowing film are among the oldest known methods of concentration, they are still extensively employed in a variety of situations where they are not only efficient but also have a low operating cost. More particularly, they are valuable for making a bulk concentrate of high specific gravity minerals from alluvials and beach sand and in upgrading low value ores. The antiquity of some of the basic concepts can be seen in the fact that they are found in Agricola&apos;s De Re Metallica which was published at Basic in 1546, while in 1602, Carew114 gave a fairly clear account of tin ore dressing in Cornwall in which grass turves were used to catch the cassiterite. This is perhaps one of the forerun¬ners of the blanket strake. The planilla of Mexico, the lanchute of Malaysia and the old Cornish box huddle are also descended from these early strakes. In fact, a sluice with holes in the bottom for concentrate discharge was shown by Agricola, not unlike the principle used in the plane table and the lamflo sluice. The convex huddle for the treatment of sandy material appeared about 1848 and the concave form eight to ten years later. For the treatment of "slime" sizes, wooden dead frames which were manually worked were used in Cornwall for many years but gave way to the automatic water-operated type in 1860, and even a mechanically tilted frame was described by Henderson115 in 1857. Theoretical Considerations The behavior of solid particles in suspension depends to a great extent upon the pulp density and the size of the suspended particles. In a fairly dilute suspension, such as that normally used when dealing with small particle sizes, the behavior of particles in a flowing film results from two effects. These are the lateral displacement, which is determined by the time taken for each particle to penetrate the flowing film and reach the solid surface, and the resistance offered by each particle to further displacement after it has reached this surface. The initial penetration through the flowing film depends on the size and specific gravity of the particle and the thickness and viscosity of the film. As a result the smaller particles will migrate further before their movement is retarded relative to larger particles of the same specific gravity. The behavior on reaching the solid surface de¬pends on whether there is a single particle layer or, as is more often the case, a multiple layer or thin bed of material which is sufficiently dilated, permits the penetration of higher specific gravity grains. Thrust of Flowing Films. When a thin film of liquid flows over a plane solid surface, the layer next to the surface remains at rest but the velocity of the film increases with the distance from the surface and becomes a maximum near, but not quite at, the free surface. Therefore, a particle in suspension in such a film is acted upon by a greater force near the upper part of the film than at the lower part, resulting in an overturning effect. After a particle reaches the separating surface or an accumulated densely packed bed of other particles, the liquid flow causes it to move downstream by rolling, sliding, or by a movement involving alternating suspension and deposi¬tion (saltation). In rolling and sliding, which are brought about by a substantially noneddying stream, the large submerged particles are acted upon to the greatest extent and they move more rapidly than smaller ones, notwithstanding their greater mass. When two particles of the same size but of different specific gravity are considered, the higher density one moves more slowly by reason of its greater mass. As a result the particles tend to become arranged in the manner shown in Fig. 29. If any particle is so large as to stand above the water surface, the transporting force on such a particle, although the maximum available, will have less effect than that on a submerged one. Such large grains are therefore carried a lesser distance. Fluid Velocity in a Flowing Film It can be shown that if y is the distance within the flowing film from the interface, the fluid velocity v&apos; at this point is given by IIn this equation p&apos; is the fluid density, g the acceleration due to gravity, a the viscosity, a the angle made by the film to the horizontal, and 0 the film thickness (in cgs units). Furthermore, the volume Q of fluid per unit time and unit width is related to the film thickness and can be calculated, since which upon integration gives Consideration of the velocity v&apos; (Eq. l) and the terminal falling velocity µ derived from Stokes law enables the horizontal travel dz in time dt to be calculated as follows: Again integration and substitution of Eq. 3 gives In this equation, z is the distance travelled before a particle of density p at the top of the fluid film has settled on the concentrating surface. From these expressions it can be seen that the depth of the flowing film varies as the cube root of the volume of fluid and inversely as the cube root of the sine of the plane surface inclination. Similarly the distance a particle can travel before reaching the surface is directly related to the quantity of fluid and its viscosity. The viscosity of pulp is greatly increased by the presence of near colloidal particles and consequently the penetration of the somewhat larger grains through the flowing film is retarded, resulting in them being carried further across the concentrator deck. Obviously this effect can be reduced by prior removal of some or all of the ultra¬fine particles. The detrimental effect of kaolin on the separation of fine ferrosilicon from quartz has also been demonstrated by Johnston,116 the relationship between viscosity and efficiency of separation being shown in Fig. 30. The pH value also has a very marked influence on the viscosity and the use of acid mine water, for example, can increase viscosity materially and thereby result in lower efficiency. Dilation of Multi-Particle Systems Except during washing (when a single particle layer may exist) concentration usually takes place in a bed of particles which is partially dilated or stirred by eddy currents.
