During the last few years, one of the great problems in the milling of all ores has been that of grinding. This subject involves not merely the cost of the operation, but also the selection of the proper degree and character of grinding to yield the best metallurgical results on the given ore. Considering the diversity of machinery, one is led to wonder at the variety of grinding methods employed, even when realizing that metallurgy demands varying products. In an attempt to investigate the relative grinding resistances of a number of ores now being milled in this country and Alaska, the manage-mxitofthe Portland mills requested Samples of average mill-run of ore from various companies. The request met with a ready response, indicating the desire of all operators to gain information on the subject. The difficulties involved in this investigation were numerous, lack of time for outside problems during this strenuous period being a serious one. Also, we were unable, in the time, to obtain a correct 150-mesh screen; in the screen analyses tabulated and plotted herewith, the 150-mesh screen was used merely to protect the 200-mesh screen, not to ascertain points on the curves. The experimental grinder was a small iron tube-mill, 8 by 121/2 in., in which was placed a definite number (74) and weight (3450 gm.) of 3/4-in. steel balls, 1 Ib. water and 1 Ib. ore. THE thermocouple as a device for the measurement of temperature is rivaled only by the platinum-resistance thermometer. Both instruments are capable of the highest precision, but the thermocouple, on account of its cheapness, ease of construction, and small cross-section, is finding a continually widening field of usefulness for industrial control as well as for laboratory measurements. Formerly, the thermocouple was subject to two disadvantages: errors due to lack of homogeneity of the metal and the labor involved in the interpolation between fixed points on the temperature scale. Former publications from the Geo-physical Laboratory have described the methods' for the selection and testing of thermocouple wire and have presented standard calibration curves2 for platinum-platinrhodiun and copper-constantan couples, so that the most important objections to the thermocouple as a precision thermometer have been removed. The calibration tables published in 1914 covered the range 0-1755° for the platinum-platinrhodium couple and 0-350° for copper-constantan. It has seemed desirable to extend the table for copper-constantan to -200 and also to include a table for the Hoskins thermocouple. Accordingly, in this paper, the new tables are presented, together with a brief explanation of their use; and, finally, certain diagrams and a paragraph on "cold-junction corrections" are given. "The Central Canada Potash facility, a division of Noranda Metal Industries Limited, is located 3 kilometres south of the junction of Highways 16 and 2, about 75 kilometres south-east of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The site occupies 26~ hectares of land and includes well-equipped machine and electrical _shops, a 325,000-tonne muriate storage and reclaim warehouse, a stores warehouse, processing plant (mill), two mine shafts (one for production, the other for servicing and personnel transport), as well as a two track product loading complex. Access to the site is by road and railway (CN and CP Rail). Suppliers of operating and maintenance use both means of transportation, whereas muriate shipments are entirely by railway.Currently five continuous mining machines - one a Goodman 526 borer and four Marietta 911-A units produce some 10,500 tonnes of ore per operating day. A smaller Voest-Alpine Af.1-100 boom type miner is used for floor cutting which was previously done by a production unit. In order to maintain safe, competent ground conditions only 35 percent of the total ore is extracted. At this rate mine reserves are deemed adequate for about 100 years. The plant has operated since August 1969 and has a current practical annual capacity of 1,270,000 tonnes of muriate. As of June 30, 1981, some 11.9 million tonnes of muriate had been produced from 31.4 million tonnes of ore. Of the total muriate, 6.1 million tonnes was granular, 4.8 million was coarse, and 1.0 million was standard. No standard product has been made since August 1978."

The subject of Premium Payments for Mechanical Loading was given consideration by the management, having in mind they would prove an incentive for increasing the tons per man shift, make for a lower production cost and allow the ambitious workman an opportunity to augment his earnings over the regular day wage rate, a standard of performance having been established by the operator which would be expected from the employee. Any performance above the standard is looked upon as a saving to the operator of which the employe benefited to the extent of receiving a certain percentage of the saving effected. The premium must be high enough to be worth while to the employee and low enough to in¬sure a saving to the employer. This method of sharing tends to pay men in accordance with their ability and effort. One of the principal advantages of this method of sharing is that a better class of labor may be attracted. Greater earnings furnish an incentive to increased tonnage. Workmen who prove themselves aggressive are readily noticed by supervisors, and, by shifting men to different places and to different working conditions, the crews are made more efficient and the inefficient workmen may be singled out and eliminated, thus permitting better results and better operation of the mechanical loading equipment. This is also evidenced by the fact that men become their own competitors, also working in competition with other crews. In order to do this, without neglect to the care and protection of the loading machines, men are educated to the proper handling and care of the machinery, keeping it in shape and everything clean in general, which has shown good results.

Goedehoop Colliery produces 8 million tonnes of coal a year, principally from room and pillar mining, and is situated in the Witbank Coalfield in the Republic of South Africa. The mine has a long and successful record of producing export quality coal from the 2,4 and 5 seams at depths ranging from 20 to 100 metres using modem mining equipment. Following a number of fatalities caused by large and unexplained roof falls in roadways and intersections of supported ground, a review of the roof control system at Goedehoop was carried out. This led in turn to a programme of underground measurements and surveys. This included detailed investigation of the roof falls, horizontal stress mapping, stress measurement and short encapsulation pull testing on roofbolts. These investigations led to a number of important conclusions in relation to the state of stress in the ground, the roof failure mechanisms, standard of rootbolt installation and performance of the roofbolt system. As a result of the work Goedehoop Colliery has made a number of substantive changes to the roof control management system at the mine. These include: 1. A recognition of the importance of horizontal stress as the main factor responsible for roof falls. 2 The forward planning of roof support based on known features which cause the stresses to be elevated. 3. The introduction of a more effective roofbolt system, which can be more easily installed to a high standard. 4. A response system based on risk assessment and monitoring roof movement on a routine basis. The paper describes the knowledge acquired, the conclusions drawn, the changes made and progress to date.

ALTHOUGH the mechanical cleaning of coal is carried out at plants on the surface, preparation is actually begun at the face in the mine. Here the character of the coal and the amount, character, and distribution of the impurities within the bed may be seen. Blasting methods, dust-allaying procedures, location of mining cut with respect to bands of impurity, and the practice of discarding segregated impurities underground, all have an important bearing on the successful operation of surface cleaning units. The most important single characteristic of both coal and its associated impurities from the standpoint of cleaning is specific gravity. Other characteristics related in one way or another to the preparation of coal are rank, petrographic composition, structure and hardness, and friability. These and still other coal properties are discussed in the first section of this chapter and impurity characteristics in the second. COAL CHARACTERISTICS RELATED TO PREPARATION Rank As a result of work done over a period of several years by committees of the American Society for Testing Materials and the American Standards Association, standard specifications are now available showing the classification of coals according to rank and quality of grade. The term "rank" expresses the degree to which the original coal-forming material has been changed by metamorphism through successive stages from peat to anthracite. Table 1 shows the classification of coals according to rank as devised by the committees of the organizations mentioned. Powder metallurgy has been developed rapidly in the last twenty years by overseas metallurgists. The technique of making the powders and their subsequent pressing and sintering into useful forms has' only been introduced into Australia under the stress of war-time economic conditions.The technique involved has very little in common with our usual methods of fabricating engineering alloys by melting the ingredients to a homogeneous mass, followed by casting to shape or casting to ingot form and shaping by application of pressure-so-called mechanical working. On the other hand, the technique includes operations, such as milling and sizing, familiar to the primary metallurgists.The compacting of metal or other powders finds important application in two outstanding fields of engineering production: (a) in making porous bearings and contact brushes, in which such a material as powdered graphite can be incorporated; (b) in making cutting tool tips of hard -carbides, which have a melting point too high to make casting feasible, and which would be too brittle in the cast condition in any case. In both these cases; the final article can be made of the desired shape and size (subject to shrinkage allowances) whilst the compact is in a soft and readily machined condition a consideration of great importance in connection with the hard carbides.In order to develop the necessary equipment and technique and at the same time to assisil in the war effort, it was decided to divert the research work of the Metallurgy Department of the University of Melbourne to the problems associated with the production of hard carbides from local raw materials and the sintering of such into tips for cutting tools. Since this work was started at least two industrial concerns have started to produce these materials in the Commonwealth.The work. to date has included (a) the purification of crude cobalt oxide from Risdon and the reduction of this to metal Particles of less than 10 p. diameter; (b) the production of tungsten powder from King Island scheelite and its conversion into tungsten carbide with particle size less than 4 p. diameter; (c) the sintering of the latter product, using the former as a bond; (d) the production of titanium carbide from titanium dioxide; (e) the separation of columbium and tantalum oxides from a Northern Territory tantalite, and the conversion of these into the respective carbides.

"The Boliden Rönnskär Smelter operates in the European Context of tight EH&S limits, with ever increasing regulations and tribulations. The near future promises to bring new burdens in the form of C02 trading, miners and pre-treaters increased appetite for a larger share of contained values, and changing compositions and competition in raw materials. On the other hand, European Smelters such as Rönnskär, Harjavalta have demonstrated an astonishing power of survival. This presentation lists and comments on current challenges but opportunities for increased survival power are also presented. One example of the latter is the ongoing investment into increased treatment capacity for e-scrap.UPDATE ON RÖNNSKÄR OPERATIONSThe Rönnskär Smelter has achieved 80 years of age with no signs of retirement. The smelter is most active in spite of its age! And it has undergone some face lift operations to maintain its attractiveness.Raw material, processing facilities and a market for the products are some essential prerequisites for a viable operation. To justify long term survival, economic terms such as return on investments and positive cash flow need to be considered. Below, we illustrate how the Rönnskär Smelter complies with these terms. To update the reader on current operations, our current flow sheet is depicted in Figure 1. The figure summarizes our current input and output."

"Solvent extraction is used in many acid leach uranium circuits to upgrade and purify the uranium bearing solution prior to final product precipitation. A number of strip options are available to recover the uranium from the loaded organic. This paper compares some of these options on the basis of typical capital and operating costs for both the solvent extraction circuit and downstream uranium processing, and also considers other related issues. The aim is to provide an objective comparative assessment of these options that could be used as a qualitative guide in process selection or improvement.INTRODUCTIONIn the 1950s the uranium industry was the first industry to adopt solvent extraction (SX). Since then, the flow sheets have advanced. Notable was the introduction of tertiary amine extractants by General Mills during the late 1950s and 1960s (Mackenzie, 1997; Mackenzie, 2005), which is still today considered ‘state of the art’ technology. Initially solvent extraction was done in combination with ion-exchange, such as in the Eluex flow sheet, followed later by the adoption of direct solvent extraction from pregnant leach solution (PLS). From a strip-precipitation perspective ammonia strip followed by ammonium diuranate precipitation was widely adopted as the norm in the uranium industry. More recently alternative strip systems have been receiving increasing attention due to the environmental, health and safety issues associated with ammonia and the resulting calcined uranium oxide product. This paper explores some of these alternative options in comparison with the ammonia route.It is important to acknowledge that each operation is unique, and therefore the information and philosophy outlined in this paper serve to provide a general guide that can be potentially applied and adapted to any site or project."

For the past six years, the author has made it a priority to attend the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada’s (PDAC) annual conference. This most recent meeting took place March 10-13, 2002in Toronto, Ontario. In the three years since the author’s last PDAC report, the mining industry has undergone a severe trough. Some the industry’s woes included deeply discounted commodity prices, rampant layoffs, mergers, and overall avoidance by the investment community. However, at each of the PDAC conferences, the author has felt a heightened sense of excitement about the mining industry, more so than at other similar gatherings.

The Boudouard reactivity of single cokes produced from selected bituminous coals and commercial cokes has been investigated in a thermo gravimetric furnace. The effect of potassium as a catalyst for this reaction was studied, as it is known to accumulate in ferromanganese furnaces. A gaseous impregnation technique using K2CO3 as the potassium source was applied to impregnate the coke samples. The reactivity experiments were designed to simulate conditions occurring in an industrial furnace, as used for production of Mn-alloys. The coke particle size varied from 3.35 to 6.63 mm, while the temperature was maintained between 800- 1100oC with a gas composition from 50 to 75% CO2 in a CO/CO2 mixture. To determine the catalytic effect of potassium, the concentration varied from a fraction of a percent up to 15%wt. The results show that single chars vary significantly in reactivity, depending on the properties of the parent coal, while commercial cokes exhibit similar reaction rates. Temperature and partial pressure of CO2 have the strongest influence on the reactivity, while the influence of gas flow rate and coke particle size were found to be negligible. The catalytic studies revealed that the relative reactivity of non-impregnated samples are preserved after the impregnation, so the least reactive coke is still the least reactive after the impregnation for the whole range of potassium loads. Also, it has been confirmed that the Boudouard reactivity reaches a plateau at potassium concentration of 4%wt.

This paper presents equilibrium data on the reaction of water vapor with vanadium dissolved in liquid iron at 1600°C. The thermo-dynamic behavior of vanadium and oxygen when present together in the melt is discussed. A deoxidation diagram is presented which shows the concentrations and activities of vanadium and oxygen in equilibrium with V209 or FeV2O4. STUDIES of the chemical behavior of oxygen dissolved in pure liquid iron1-3 have served to determine with a fair degree of accuracy the thermody-namic properties of this binary solution. The practical problems of steelmaking, however, involve not the simple binary but ternary and more complex solutions. Only a beginning has been made toward understanding the behavior of such systems. The silicon-manganese-oxygen relationship was studied long ago by Korber and Oelsen4 and more recently by Hilty and Crafts." The carbon-oxygen reaction was investigated by Vacher and Hamilton6 and by Marshall and Chipman.7 A number of deoxidizing reactions have been studied empirica1lys'10 with the object of determining the appropriate "deoxidation constants." The work of Chen and Chipman" afforded a clear-cut view of the effect of the alloy element, chromium, on the thermodynamic activity of oxygen in liquid ternary solutions. These investigators determined the oxygen content of experimental melts which had been brought into equilibrium with a controlled atmosphere of hydrogen and water vapor and were able to show that the presence of chromium decreases the activity coefficient of oxygen. They determined also the conditions under which the two deoxidation products, Cr2O3 and FeCr2O4, were formed and showed that the activity of residual oxygen is considerably less than its percentage. It was the object of this investigation to apply a similar method to the study of molten alloys of iron, vanadium, and oxygen. Vanadium was once considered a moderately potent deoxidizer, but this is now known to be erroneous, in the light of its behavior in steelmaking practice. Its reaction with oxygen retains a certain amount of practical interest in that a high percentage of one element places a limit on the amount of the other that can be retained. As a deoxidizer it will be shown that vanadium lies between chromium and silicon. Experimental Method The apparatus was that used by the authors3 in their study of the equilibrium in the reaction: H2(g) +O = H2O(g);K,= [1] PII., ao Crucibles of Norton alundum or of pure alumina were used. The latter were made in this laboratory and were of high strength and low porosity. Under conditions of use they imparted no significant amount of aluminum (less than 0.01 pct) to the bath. Temperature measurements were made with the optical equipment and calibration chart of Dastur and Gokcen.= The charge was made up of calculated amounts of ferrovanadium (20 pct V) and clean electrolytic iron totaling approximately 70 g. The first few heats were made in alumina crucibles with an insufficient amount of vanadium so that no oxide of vanadium would be precipitated under the particular gas composition. All the heats were made at 1600 °C under a high preheat and with four parts of argon to one part of hydrogen in the gas mixture to prevent thermal diffusion. The rate of gas flow was maintained constant at 250 to 300 ml per min of hydrogen. The time for each heat was three quarters of an hour after the melt had melted and attained the required temperature (1600°C). The water-vapor content of the entrant gas mixture was gradually raised in succeeding heats, keeping the vanadium content of the melt constant. This was controlled by manipulation of saturator temperature. A point was reached when for a given H2O:H2 ratio some of the dissolved vanadium was oxidized and appeared as a thin, bright oxide film on top of the melt. By raising the temperature of the melt it was possible to dissolve the oxide film which reappeared as soon as it was cooled down to 1600°C. The temperature readings taken on the oxide film were consistently higher by 80" to 85 °C as observed by the optical pyrometer. The heat was allowed to come to equilibrium under a partial covering of this oxide film. A macroscopic approach integrated with microscopic analyses for wettability characterization is presented. Wetting depends on 1) Contact between the dust and the fluid droplets, 2) Wettability of the particles by the wetting fluid, and 3) Wettability rate (due to low contact times). The goal of this paper is to show that the wetting rate is a significant factor in dust control. Samples from the roof, three different horizons of the coal seam and the floor were pulverized to less than 25 µm. Experiments were conducted with known wetting fluids to correlate surface tension and equilibrium wettability. Further analyses were performed in terms of surface charge (zeta potential), particle size, mineral composition, elemental composition, and quartz content. The surface tension reduction was also achieved by the use of chemicals and/or altering the temperature of the water. Two methods were used to evaluate wettability rates: a) near real-time comparison of wettability rates, and b) comprehensive evaluation of the intrinsic wettability rates. The data obtained provides meaningful insights towards the design of engineering controls for an economical solution to dust control in coal mines.

The temperature ranges in which the three inter-metallic phases in the Nb-Sn system form have been determined and the composition and structure of two of the three phases has been established. The kinetics of the formation of Nb3Sn in cored wire samples has been studied in the temperature range of 800° to 1050°C. From 800°to 950°C the rate of formation increases by four orders of magnitude. The rate-controlling step for the formation process in this temperature range appears to be the diffilsion of tin through NbSn. At higher temperatu~es a change occurs in the mechanism of the formation process such that up to a temperature of 1050°C the rate of formation of Nb3Sn does not increase above the rate observed at 950°C. For temperatures helow 950°C the current-carrying capacity of the wire increases with increased percent reaction reaching a maximum value when the formation process is 90 to 95 pct complete. The maximum current-carrying capacity obtainable in this temperature range is independent of the temperature. Above 950°C tlze current-carrying capacity obtainable in the wire decreases with increasing temperature of formation. A model is proposed which accounts for the ohserved behavior. RECENTLY, Buehler et a1.l reported the results of an investigation of the process variables which influence the superconducting properties of Nb3Sn-cored wire. These results indicated that at least four variables affect the properties of the manufactured wire. These include composition, particle size of the starting powder mix, temperature of heat treatment, and time of heat treatment. In order to understand completely the role of these variables, it is necessary to have an accurate knowledge of the phase equilibria in the Nb-Sn system. At the present time, phase-equilibrium diagrams for the Nb-Sn system have been published by a number of investigators.2-5 The diagrams differ as to the number of phases present, the composition of the phases, and the temperature range of stability of the phases. The present investigation was undertaken in order to resolve these differences. Since the investigation of Buehler et al. demon- strated that the length of time at the temperature of heat treatment affected the superconducting properties of Nb3Sn, it is apparent that it is necessary to understand the kinetics of the formation process as well as the equilibrium conditions before a complete understanding of the system is possible. As a result, the kinetics of formation of the various phases in the system were also studied in this investigation. EXPEFUMENTAL PROCEDURE Diffusion couples and sintered powdered compacts were employed in the phase-diagram investigation. The diffusion couples were made by filling 1/8-in.-ID monel-sheathed niobium tubes with tin. The monel sheath was employed to facilitate drawing.' The tubes were then drawn to a tin-core diameter of 32 mils. Samples approximately 3 in. long were then cut from the drawn composite. The tin was drilled out of the ends to a depth of 1/4 in. and niobium-wire plugs were inserted into the ends and peened over. The monel was removed by etching in concentrated nitric acid, after which the samples were sealed in evacuated quartz bulbs and heat-treated in a resistance-wound tube furnace. The samples were quenched into ice water upon removal from the furnace. The diffusion couple samples were examined metallographically employing a chemical etching solution consisting of 10 ml of saturated chromic acid per g of NaF. In addition, two anodizing solutions were used for phase-identification purposes. The first was the picklesimer7 solution; the second consisted of equal parts by volume of 30 pct H2O2 and concentrated NH4OH to which 1 g of NaF was added per 25 ml of solution. The anodizing conditions for the second solution were 2 v and 100 ma with a tin cathode. The powdered compacts were made by pressing previously mixed powders of 99.9 pct pure Sn and 99.6 pct pure Nb supplied by the United Mineral Co. into cylinders 3/8 in. in diameter by 1/2 in. long. The cylinders were then sealed in quartz tubes and heat-treated in the same manner as the diffusion couples. The samples were examined metallographically and by X-ray diffraction techniques. Since it was desirable to be able to correlate the kinetic data with current-carrying capacity, the type of specimen chosen for this part of the investigation had to be a compromise between the optimum system for studying kinetics and one which was suitable for making current-carrying capacity

Twenty-nine laboratory steels were studied to determine the effects of composition and ferrite grain size on drop-weight and Charpy V-notch transition temperatures. The experimental steels covered the following ranges in composition.. 0.10 to 0.32 pct C, 0.30 to 1.31 pct Mn, 0.02 to 0.43 pct Si, md nil to 0.136 pct acid-soluble Al. Although most of the data were obtained on hot-rolled samples, some plates were heat-treated in order to cover a wider range in ferrite grain size. The experimental data were used for a multiple-correlation analysis conducted with the aid of an electronic computer. The study showed that carbon raises and that manganese, silicon, aluminum, and finer ferrite grains lower both drop-weight and Charpy transition temperatures. Quantitatively, variations in composition and grain size have a more marked effect on V15 Charpy transition temperatures than on the drop-weight transition temperature. Useful correlations were found between transition temperatures in drop-weight tests and those defined by seven different criteria for Charpy tests. Evidence was accumulated that the conditions ordinarily used for drop-weight tests are more severe for 1-1/4-in. -thick plate than for 5/8- to 1-in. -thickplate. PROJECT SR-151, to study quantitatively the effects of metallurgical variables on performance in the drop-weight test, was established by the Ship Structure Committee late in 1958 on recommendation of the National Academy of Sciences, National Research Council. This project was initiated as a result of the increasing use of the drop-weight (nil-ductility) test in predicting the ductile-to-brittle behavior of steel. Qualitative data indicated the drop-weight was not as sensitive to metallurgical variables as the Charpy V-notch test. Furthermore, the available information indicated that the drop-weight test did not show the superiority of killed steels over semikilled steels reflected by Charpy tests. This difference in sensitivity to brittle fracture is considered important because the drop-weight transition temperature has been reported1 to correlate better with service-temperature failures than the V-notch test does at a constant energy level. Therefore, this project was concerned with establishing quantitatively the effects of metallurgical variables in the drop-weight test. For comparison, Charpy V-notch data were obtained for the steels investigated. This paper summarizes the results of the investigation. Most of the steels used for the study were made and processed in the laboratory. However, some tests were also made on commercial killed steels available from Project SR-139 (SSC-141). During the course of the investigation, data were obtained on the effects of carbon, silicon, manganese, and aluminum on transition temperatures of drop-weight and Charpy specimens. In addition, the effects of heat treatment which changed the ferrite grain size and the transition temperatures were also investigated. Finally a few exploratory studies were made on commercial killed steels to evaluate the effects of plate thickness, grain size, and heat treatment on the performance of drop-weight specimens. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Preparation of Materials. A total of twenty-nine 500-lb induction-furnace heats were made and processed in the laboratory for the investigation. Carbon, manganese, silicon, and aluminum contents were systematically varied. Melting and rolling techniques proven satisfactory in a previous project2 were used as a guide for the current investigation. Composition. The composition of the twenty-nine laboratory heats made for this project are given in Table I. The steels are divided into three groups. The first group consists of ten aluminum-killed steels similar in composition to Class C ship-plate steel. The second group consists of ten semikilled or Class B type steels. In both of these groups the carbon and manganese contents were intentionally varied over a wide range. This wide range in composition was helpful in obtaining quantitative data from a limited number of steels. The primary purposes of these two groups of steels was to determine the effects of carbon, manganese, and deoxidation practice. In addition, one steel in each group (Steels 2-2 and 9-2) were made about 1 year after the start of the program in order to check consistency of melting practice. The third group of nine steels listed in Table I was intended for studies on the effects of silicon and aluminum. What is commonly called the equilibrium contact-angle (the author's "maximum contact-angle") can have only one value on a smooth, flat, homogeneous surface under a given set of conditions. The equilibrium contact-angle is defined, for such a system, as the angle between the solid-liquid and liquid-gas interfaces, measured through the liquid. The value of the equilibrium contact-angle is uniquely determined by the value of the interfacial energies of the three intersecting interfaces and is independent of other forces in the system. When the liquid-gas interface intersects the solid at an edge—as was the case for all the experiments reported in this paper—the orientation of the solid-liquid interface is indeterminate or varies through 90" for a right-angle edge. Mr. Morris has called the angle between the horizontal and the liquid-gas interface for this edge condition a "static contact-angle." I feel that this term is unnecessarily misleading. In the first place, "static contact-angle" sounds too much like "equilibrium contact-angle." In the second place, the magnitude of the "static contact-angle," which I would prefer to call the "supporting angle," is determined by the forces in the system other than those derived from the interfacial energies, hence "contact angle" is misleading. If Mr. Morris had said that the "supporting-angle" is variable and depends on the weight of the particle and size of the bubble and that it has a maximum possible value equal to the equilibrium contact-angle, his discussion would have been more accurate. Tartaron—In this paper the author presents a very interesting mathematical development of the forces present when a mineral particle adheres to an air bubble. Excellent concordance is obtained between mathematical formulation and experimental results. It is the writer's understanding that when the mineral surface presented to an air bubble is greater than the area of contact, the maximum contact angle is obtained. However, this contact angle represents distortion of the bubble, the normal shape of which is spherical or in cross-section, circular. This distortion produces a force that acts in opposition to the force of adhesion between the bubble and particle. Hence, at maximum contact angle, the force of adhesion between bubble and particle is at a minimum for static conditions. However, when the size of bubble is increased, the size of particle remaining the same (and all other conditions remaining the same), the contact angle decreases, the distortion of the bubble decreases and the force in opposition to adherence of bubble and particle also decreases. Thus, there is stronger attachment between bubble and particle. When this situation is applied to actual flotation conditions, it is doubtful that it has any significance. The reason is that the bubbles are normally so much larger than the particles, that in substantially all cases, it is probable that negligible distortion of the bubble takes place. In table IV, the author makes computations for bubbles from 0.50 to 2 mm diam. This is from 0.02 in. to 0.08 in. Certainly the bubbles generated in a flotation machine are far larger than this. The surfaces of the author's bubbles range from 0.79 to 12.6 sq mm. The area of contact of the glass rod (0.15 mm diam) is 0.017 sq mm. Thus, ratio of bubble surface to mineral area of contact ranges from 47 to 741 in round numbers. If we take a %-in. diam bubble and a 65-mesh (0.208 mm) particle of cubical shape, the ratio of bubble surface to mineral area of contact is 2931. Mineral particles do not readily become attached to air bubbles. Taggart has shown that in pneumatic flotation machines collector-coated particles are only temporarily attached to bubbles. They keep falling off and down in the froth but at a delayed rate as compared with gangue. Spedden and Hannan's motion pictures confirm the difficulty of attaching particles to air bubbles. The characteristics of indium-tin-oxide (ITO) nanoparticles recovered from TFT-LCD panel scraps were investigated. The ITO was separated from TFT-LCD panel scraps by dissolving the color filter layer located between the ITO layer and the glass substrate. The solution was filtered to separate the ITO from the color filter component, and the filtered ITO was dissolved in the acid solution. ITO nanoparticles were then precipitated with ammonium hydroxide and organic dispersing agent, followed by heat-treatment at 600 °C. HRTEM, EDX and XRD analyses revealed that the 20 nm sized particle were composed of 90 % In and 10 % Sn, and were well crystallized to in the (222) preferred orientation.

Epithermal vein systems are often modeled as simple, discrete high grade structures within low grade host rock. However, geologic setting and structural preparation influence how such vein systems form. In structurally complex areas, veins may follow several structural trends and occur on a variety of scales. Geologic and grade modeling within such complex structural regimes can be difficult as individual veins cannot be delineated from host rock based on grade alone. Structurally complex areas require a different approach than traditional discrete vein modeling. Presented herein is a study of a structurally complex area that hosts vein mineralization to be mined underground. All veins could not be modeled discretely, so an alternate approach was needed. Major structures were modeled using surface and underground mapping and were then used to create a structural trend for the area. This trend was used to guide 3D grade shell construction. The grade shells replaced 3D vein solids for grade estimation in order to mitigate the influence of high grade samples. Structurally guided grade shell construction offers a more effective modeling method than discrete vein modeling in deposits that are structurally complex.
