SEVERAL studies1-10 have reported a type of grain boundary migration which occurs when a strained grain grows into an adjacent deformed grain during annealing. Beck and Sperry called this phenomenon strain-induced grain boundary migration, since the observed boundary movement, which takes place in a direction away from the center of curvature, is apparently motivated by the excess free energy of strain hardening. However, little information has been obtained on the detailed structural changes accompanying such grain boundary motion. The problem of driving force for strain-induced boundary migration was considered by Dunn and Daniels,' who used bent bicrystals of Si-Fe. They demonstrated that two grains of differing energy, in the form of subboundaries, behaved according to the concept that the low-energy grain would grow at the expense of the high-energy grain. Beck" reported experiments of Sperry for high-purity aluminum, which indicated that generally the particular grain of a pair which work-hardened more was invaded. Introduction “A Western mine is a hole in the ground owned by a liar. . ." -Mark Twain THE CAPITAL INVESTMENT DECISION Decisions pertaining to a firm's proposed capital investments can have vital short- and long-term consequences on the organization's ability to compete, and even survive.Capita1 investment decisions, in general, center around two fundamental activities: (1) allocating capital funds to specific investment projects or assets, and (2) obtaining necessary financing in such proportion as to increase the overall value of the firm. In essence these activities or decisions describe the science of finance (as contrasted with economics). Fimnce has been described in general terms as the study of how a present, known amount of cash is converted into a future, perhaps unknown, amount of cash (Archer, Choate, and Racette, 1979). Fundamental to understanding the science of finance and the capital investment decision process in general are the basic concepts relating to cash flow transactions, time, income generation (markets), expected returns, and risk. The functions of finance may be segregated into three fundamental decisions which a firm must address: (1) the dividend decision, (2) the financing decision, and (3) the investment decision. These decisions are interdependent and their joint impact on the objective of the firm must be considered. This book primarily addresses the concepts and components associated with the investment and financing decisions as they affect the practice of mine valuation. Responsibilities of Management A primary assumption incorporated in this book is that the fundamental objective of any firm is to maximize its value, or wealth of its owners (stock- holders). Here, the term wealth refers to the total current market value of the firm's assets. In the case of corporations, the wealth or value is considered to be represented by the market price of the firm's common stock. The price of the firm's common stock obviously will be affected by its investment, financing, and dividend decisions. Consequently, an optimal combination of these three decisions should maximize the value of the firm to its stockholders. It is important to point out that wealth maximization is a more appropriate and inclusive goal for the firm than profit maximization. Indeed, there is a difference between the two objectives in most situations. For instance, a firm can always raise profits by selling stock and investing the proceeds in treasury bills or certificates of deposit. THE growth of human knowledge is an evolutionary process. Historically our separate sciences came into existence as people became interested in various apparently unrelated domains of phenomena, and in this manner we acquired the sciences of physics, chemistry, astronomy, biology and geology. As various of these sciences became established, cognizance of them came to be taken by the universities and in this manner there arose the traditional departments of physics, astronomy, chemistry, biology and geology of our American universities. As there was no particular rationality in the boundaries separating the various sciences, in the university departments the jurisdiction of each has assumed quite arbitrary limits. In the domain of earth phenomena the first science to grow up was that of geology, which arose originally from the activities of the collectors science dealing with directly observable terrestrial phenomena for which elementary rational explanations were offered. The traditional treatment of phenomena by the science of geology has rarely been with more than an elementary regard for the fact that these phenomena were also phenomena of physics and chemistry. Since the latter part of the nineteenth century, a new approach to terrestrial phenomena has been emerging and becoming of so great a significance that it can no longer be ignored. This approach has been made by people trained primarily in the sciences of physics and chemistry, who have investigated terrestrial phenomena as constituting phenomena of their respective sciences. In this manner we have acquired the so-called "borderland sciences" of geophysics, the physics of the earth, and of geochemistry, the chemistry of the earth. Neither of these fields is new, having arisen chiefly at the hands of European investigators during the latter part of the nineteenth century. The European universities have long since given official recognition at least to geophysics, by the establishment of departments or institutes of geophysics, which are on a par with the university departments of the other sciences.

The liquidus uranium concentration in the U-Bi system is given by the following expression for the temperature range 400° to 800°C: No break was observed in the curve over this temperature range. The partial molar enthalpy change for uranium in the liquidus reaction, UBi2— U + 2Bi, was found to equal 12,300 cal per g mole. Copper produced a continuous decrease in the liguihs uranium concentration at 600°C. The presence of copper in the solvent was observed to affect the uranium activity coefficient according to the following expression: duced no change in the liquidus combosition below 0.6 at. pct Pd. Higher palladium concentrations sharply depressed the uranium concentration. SOLUTE behavior in molten alloys has been shown to be strongly influenced by the presence of additional species. Much attention has been given to such phenomena in iron-base systems where a number of alloying elements and/or impurities are likely to be present in small but significant quantities. Frequently, the interaction of these solutes has altered their thermodynamic behavior to the extent that reaction equilibra are appreciably influenced. Consequently, much of the information available for binary behavior must be reevaluated when additional components are likely to be present. Similar interactions can be expected to occur in bismuth-base solvents. Interest in the use of bismuth solutions of uranium as reactor fuels has stimulated investigators to explore the effect of various elements on the liquidus uranium concentration. Criticality requirements necessitate close control of the uranium concentration which, at the anticipated operating temperature of 500°C, approaches saturation. Consequently, elements which suppress the liquidus concentration could produce serious reactivity problems. Since the fuel solution is cer- tain to contain additives, such as magnesium and zirconium, for corrosion inhibition as well as small concentrations of fission products and corrosion products, a better understanding of the possible interaction phenomena is mandatory. This need stimulated experimental programs at the Brookhaven National Laboratory and elsewhere to determine precisely the liquidus uranium concentration in the bismuth-rich portion of several ternary systems. Early experimental efforts were directed toward an accurate dcmtermination of the U-Bi liquidus over the temperature range from 300' to 800°c. As shown in Fig. 1, the results to date exhibit considerable scatter. The investigations of Bareis,' Teitel,2 Greenwood,3 and Cotterill and hon4 agreed well below 700°c. Greenwood and Teitel extended their studies to higher temperatures but failed to concur in their results. A mining companyÆs approach to managing the risk of theft of explosives and initiating devices should be underpinned by an organisation-wide policy developed with internal and external consultation. It should be based on the principles of sound proactive risk management, planning, monitoring and remedial action. This paper aims to provide mining (and construction)organisations with the rationale and many of the tools they need to control explosive security risks. As with all legislative compliance, they are best managed by incorporating the statutory and legal requirements into company policies, management systems and plans, operating procedures and culture. This is the approach that has been adopted in this paper. Trends we should expect: more prescriptive legislation and stricter government regulations; enhanced enforcement and more prosecution; more sophisticated detection systems, eg airports; additional compliance costs; additional vigilance on record keeping; improved risk awareness and risk communication; wider use of explosives policies, management systems and plans; and additional security staff with investigative skills.It should be noted that mining companies will be required to play their part in reducing the likelihood of explosives, intended for mining purposes, being wrongfully used to threaten, hold to ransom or to injure individuals or members of the public or to produce property damage. This will be done by putting in place safeguards to reduce the risk of theft of explosives while they are under their control. On that basis, this is a business risk assessment rather than a hazard risk assessment. A conclusion of this paper is that mining companies can and should play their part in reducing the supply of explosive materials that can then be used for illegal activities. In fact, mining companies have always had this duty, but now the stakes are higher û æcomplacency no longerÆ.

"In flotation practices as the particle size becomes fine, e.g., p<20µm, the process efficiency declines markedly. When flotation of fine particles is necessary, one method to improve the recovery is selective agglomeration of fines. Different agglomerating methods have been introduced and tested; however, one method which has recently received great attention is to aggregate fine particles by magnetic force. A selective aggregation of the fine paramagnetic particles, e.g., sulfide minerals, can be achieved by applying a high intensity magnetic field during flotation conditioning. The method is simple, selective and effective for fines, and has a low operation cost. However, a minimum magnetic susceptibility of fine grains is required for this process. This method has been demonstrated in different sulfide minerals flotation plants. The implementation of the magnetic conditioning device, ProFlote, in both the Cu-Pb and the Zn circuit of Boliden’s Garpenberg plant in Sweden, where a complex massive sulfide ore is treated, is discussed herein. The preliminary results have shown an increase in the recovery of value minerals, in particular Zn and Ag and considerable reduction in Zn deportment to the final tail. Increases in Cu grade and decreases in Pb grade in Cu-con have been achieved as well."

THE Cuajone porphyry copper deposit is the northernmost of a group of three deposits in southern Peru controlled by the Southern Peru Copper Corp.-Toquepala, Quelleveco, and Cuajone— all within a 20-mile belt. Although small pockets of high-grade copper oxide ores were worked in the Cuajone area in the 19th century, it was not until 1939 that its potentialities as a disseminated deposit were recognized by 0. C. Schmedeman. An exploratory drilling pro- gram was begun in December 1942 and continued until early 1945. The program was revived in November 1952 and completed early in 1954. Early exploration was by diamond drilling. Later exploration was predominantly churn drilling, with diamond drilling used only for wildcat holes. Along this northwest-trending belt of deposits. which follows the western slopes of the Andean Range, quartz-monzonite has invaded earlier dio-rite intrusives and a series of warped and tilted Cretaceous volcanic flows. Little faulting of consequence has been recognized within the mineralized areas. I HAVE long been aware that ferruginous copper furnace slags if fused in the electric arc will yield metallic iron containing copper, and in order to confirm this knowledge, and to obtain further information of the behavior of such slags in the high temperature and reducing conditions of the electric furnace, a number of samples of slag were fused in an experimental electric furnace. The results obtained, given in Table I., show that a very large amount of metallic iron was produced, and that this iron carried with it practically all the copper, gold, and silver, and more than 50 per cent. of the sulphur, of the original slag. The metallic buttons formed in the electric furnace were clean, hard, but not brittle.

Two types of low sulphidation epithermal deposits that have different gangue mineralogies and ore shoot geometries are recognised. One has laterally near-continuous ore shoots over a significant vertical interval that consist of quartz, chalcedony, pyrite, minor base metal sulphides and adularia, with electrum. The other type of deposit has discrete near-vertical ore shoots of a lesser vertical extent, that consist of quartz, pyrite, base metal sulphides, sulphosalts, electrum and in their upper parts barite, which are enclosed in veins of earlier quartz. The gold mineralisation in both deposit types is considered to be a co-precipitate of pyrite, with that in the first type of deposit produced by prolonged boiling in an upflow of a hydrothermal system (Upflow Deposits); an example is Waihi in New Zealand. The other type is produced by mixing, a deep water primed for gold deposition by prior limited boiling, with an iron-bearing oxidised condensate of the steam released by the boiling, in an outflow of a hydrothermal system (Outflow Deposits); an example is Thames in New Zealand. Early recognition of these different types of deposits can be used to develop mineralisation models of predictive value on which to focus exploration drilling. Early recognition of an Upflow Deposit promotes an extensive program to delineate the extension of the main ore shoot. In contrast recognition of an Outflow Deposit requires a more intensive approach to find individual ore shoots which, although smaller than those found in Upflow Deposits, may be high-grade, particularly if there is earlier mineralisation present to act as a protore.

"The pyrolysis of PWBs was investigated by a TG-DTA-MS furnace at 300–1173 K. The kinetics and the control of emitted gas during the pyrolysis of PWBs with and without chemical additives were studied. Moreover, the possibility of controlling the amount of toxic exhaust gases like HBr, C6H6, Br2, Cl2, HCl gas and recovering beneficial gaseous fuels like CH4 and H2 from pyrolysis process is discussed. The MS data for each PWB sample were examined as a function of temperature and particular m/z values could be associated with the mass loss steps in the TG data. The degradation of the organic material was characterized by m/z = 2, 16, 18, 28, 36, 44, 71, 78, 81, and 160. Fe2O3 was the best inhibitor of toxic HBr and C6H6 when compared to Al2O3, CaO Y-zeolite and ZSM-5. Moreover, it had no significant effect on the valuable H2 and CH4 gas evolution. This selective inhibition of toxic gases while maintaining the valuable ones make Fe2O3 the best candidate among the investigated additives in controlling gas emissions from PWB pyrolysis process.IntroductionThe electronic and electric industry is one of the world’s largest and fastest growing manufacturing sectors. Printed wiring boards (PWBs) are a common component of many electronic and electric systems.[1]. The rapid development and expansion of the electronics industry over the past several decades have led to a dramatic increase in the production of PWBs and a corresponding increase in the amount of waste generated from both production and disposal. The environmental impacts of the treatment and recycling of PWBs waste have become a major concern [1-2]. PWBs are particularly problematic to recycle because of the heterogeneous mix of organic material, metals, and glass fiber [1]."

In this research, the effects of rare earth elements addition on thermal fatigue behaviors of AZ91 alloy were studied. Repeated heating and cooling cycles were applied on the samples at 170°C and 210 °C to develop thermal fatigue cracks, Crack growth mechanisms and microstructural influences were investigated by optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) as well as energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Thermal fatigue behaviors were improved successively by addition of up to 2-wt% RE, This improvement is attributed to consummation of the aluminum of the melt by precipitation of the needle shape Al 11 RE3 phases, This process reduces the volume of Mg17Al12 phases and consequently decreases the brittle Mg/Mg17Al12 interfaces which are the main reason of weak thermal properties of the alloy at rather high temperatures, Further additions of RE, however, reduced the thermal shock resistance of samples by increasing in the mean length of the brittle needle shape phases.

INTRODUCTION The small mining company faces the dilemma of how to finance the development of its properties. Many of these small companies don&apos;t have the financial resources to pay for development costs from their own funds and frequently they do not even have the financial strength to permit them to borrow the money needed for development. A project financing can sometimes be arranged in such a way as to solve this dilemma. A typical project financing will not provide the answer to the "little guy&apos;s" problem because most project financings require that the sponsors of the project provide completion undertakings and sometimes other undertakings. These undertakings are often a prerequisite to obtaining financing, and if the sponsor is not financially strong enough to provide the comfort that the lenders require, then the sponsor will have difficulty obtaining financing no matter what undertakings are offered. However, with a little imagination and the right set of circumstances, a project financing can sometimes provide the solution to the small mining company&apos;s problem. The Strathcona Sound Project is unusually suited as a case study because the sponsor, Mineral Resources International Limited,(MRI) was able to arrange a project financing for the development of the project even though the lenders probably would not have been willing to loan a similar amount of money direct to MRI based on the full faith and credit of MRI&apos;s balance sheet. The way that MRI was able to arrange this financing makes for an interesting story. THE CASE In early 1974, MRI owned 100% of a small to medium sized zinc - lead - silver massive sulfide deposit (Property) located 475 miles north of the Arctic Circle less than two miles from deep water on Strathcona Sound which is a shipping zone in the Canadian Arctic. The Property was situated at a desolate location except for an Eskimo settlement (Arctic Bay) which was about 20 miles west of the Property. In other words, the project required that complete infrastructure would need to be installed in this far northern location. Independent reserve and feasibility studies (Study) had been completed on the Property which confirmed a total of 6,825,000 tons of reserves classified and summarized as shown below on Table I: [ ] These reserves were based on 229 diamond drill holes totalling 58,909 feet and were established on a cut-off grade of 7% zinc and a minimum mining height of seven feet. The overall mining recovery rate was estimated at not less than 85% and not more than 90%. The feasibility study indicated that it would cost an estimated $45,044,000 to develop an underground mine, a concentrator, a town-site, a power plant, storage facility, loading dock, a tailings disposal area and an airstrip on the Property with an annual capacity of 525,000 tons of ore per year. The construction period was expected to take two years and projected capital costs were broken down as set forth below on Table II:

Rod mills were developed, as a logical substitute for the rolls crusher when larger tonnages had to be handled, on a continuous basis. Today, with even larger tonnages to process, the trend is to install larger equipment, automate the plant and develop the highest availability possible, in order to cut costs. The rod mills, because of design limitations in size and speed 1&apos;2, are not able to meet these new requirements. The autogenous mill was a timely development and serves as an excellent alternative for ores that are suitable to this type of grinding. When ores are not amenable to autogenous grinding, selection of a flowsheet is dictated by liberation characteristics and unit operations to be used for mineral recovery.. The following alternatives are available: (a) Multiple rod mills, capable of drawing no more than 2000 HP each, followed by ball mills. (b) Gyradisc crusher followed by two stages of ball mill grinding.3 (c) Tertiary crushing followed by closed circuit single stage ball mills grinding to approximately -100 mesh, as in the copper industry. (d) Tertiary&apos; crushing followed by two-stage, ball milling. Each stage will operate in closed circuit with either screens or cyclones. It is this last alternative, particularly as it

The manufacture of iron in the Province of Quebec forms one of the most interesting subjects in the development of this great industry in America. It began soon after the first steps taken in the New England colonies, where iron was first practically made in America. In both cases the ores smelted were bog-ores. In Qaebec the first work was done in and about, the town of Three Rivers, and many interesting facts in connection with the development of this industry may be found in the paper read at the Halifax meeting, September, 1885, by Mr. James Herbert Bartlett, of Montreal,* which traces the industry from its inception, about 1730, down to 1883, at which time the St. Maurice forge is declared to be the oldest active furnace on the American continent. A few years later the Canada Iron Furnace Company, Ltd., became interested in the enterprise, the extent of which has been greatly enlarged beyond all former limits. In fact, the manufacture of this particular class of iron has never been attempted on the scale now practiced by this company. This work has been carried on for the purpose of supplying a grade of iron hitherto procurable only at heavy cost for Canadian consumption from the United States, and for English consumption from Sweden. The manufacture of iron in the Province of Quebec was based entirely on bog-ores during the period referred to; and as the supply of iron made elsewhere from cheaper ores became more abundant, the local manufacture, handicapped by want of shipping facilities, lack of capital, and other natural causes, was gradually discontinued. It was always admitted that for certain purposes the iron made in the Province possessed special value; but the demand for articles requiring such special virtue was limited, and cheaper grades were gradually substituted for general uses. "The paper presents the approach taken by Craigmont Mines to grinding circuit control. A detailed description is given of a fully automatic control system which bases its control actions on the continuous measurement of particle size in the cyclone overflow stream. The control system holds a specified particle size in the cyclone overflow, and grinds rod mi 11 ore feed at increased rates. The principles of operation of the system used for continuous measurement of particle size are described, end the improvements in mill throughput and copper recovery over several months of continuous operation are presented.INTRODUCTION Craigmont Mines Limited is located in the south-western interior region of the province of British Columbia, approximately 230 road miles north-east of Vancouver, and ten miles west of the town of Merritt. A moderate climate, good roads and service facilities provided by the Canadian Pacific Railway, Inland Natural Gas Company, and the B.C. Hydro and Power Authority, have provided a very favorable mine and plant site.The preliminary metallurgical design of the Craigmont mill was based on the test results of samples obtained from the original 2500' level drift during 1959. Pilot plant runs and other research testing for design pur¬poses were conducted at the Canadian Exploration Ltd. Laboratory, at Salmo, B.C. The design flowsheet was altered in progressive stages from 2,000 to 3,000, and finally 4,000 tons per day as the ore reserves became better defined. Construction work on the 2,400' level mill site commenced in late 1960. The official opening of Craigntnt Mines Limited took place on September 15, 1961, a little over two years from the time of the metallurgical assessment of the original ore samples.Mill throughput to date has varied widely both on a daily and a monthly basis, due to the varying hardness of the mine ores. The grindability af the ore appears to be related to the oxide iron content, which varies from lows of 9% to highs of 20%. Daily tonnage has ranged from 5,000 tons per day with 10% iron in the feed, to 6,000 tons per day with 20% iron feeds."

The Malmberget Division of LKAB is located 70 km north of the arctic circle and has about 2000 employees. The dominating products are sinter feed concentrate and pellets. A general flow sheet for the operation is shown in Figure 1. About 20 percent of the ore body consists of hematite, which is mined separately and processed into sinter feed concentrate. That pert of the ore consisting of magnetite passes through a dry cobbing plant. The robbing process includes crushing, screening and dry magnetic separation. The entire cobbing product is used as feed for the wet concentrator. After rod mill grinding and magnetic separation the concentrated slurry is classified. The coarse fraction (+200 mesh) becomes sinter feed concentrate and the slime fraction after further ball mill grinding and magnetic separation, becomes pelletizing feed. A small quantity of the magnetite ore is processed into special iron-rich products in the the wet concentrator. Two types of pelletizing plant are used, shaft furnace and straight grate. This paper will deal only with experience gained at the straight grate plant.

Alterações na cristalização dos pós fluxantes durante o processo, devido variações de composição química pelas reações metalúrgicas na interface metal/escória ou pela incorporação de compostos exógenos, afetam o fluxo de calor no molde de lingotamento contínuo. Um dos compostos importantes é o ZrO2, proveniente do desgaste da válvula submersa. A proposta do trabalho foi investigar o efeito deste composto, utilizando simulação laboratorial, na cristalização do pó fluxante e no fluxo de calor do molde. Os resultados demonstraram que quando há o incremento do teor de ZrO2 o fluxo de calor na região do menisco também se eleva. Tal efeito é crítico para formação de defeitos, uma vez que a região do menisco é crucial para a solidificação inicial do aço.

An oolitic iron ore from Gara Djebilet, Algeria was characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectrosopy and the phosphorus distribution between various phases studied. Two ore types were identified – a haematite-dominated, oolitic type and a more massive, magnetite-dominated type. The haematite-dominated ore had a higher phosphorus content, up to 0.6% in the iron oxide minerals, than the magnetite-dominated type (0.3% P). Owing to the very fine-grained texture of the gangue minerals, reducing the phosphorus content to levels suitable for steelmaking (below 0.05% P) by conventiobal means would entail an energyintensive process with a high carbon footprint. Preliminary leaching test work using a sulphurous geothermal water as lixiviant, assisted by solar thermal acceleration, gave very promising results, removing 0.13% of the residual P (or 21.7% removal of total P) from the high-phosphorus oolitic ore.
