"Abstract - The mining industry has endorsed the concept of sustainable development in principle. We now need to ensure that it is "lived" throughout the workplace. Frequently, sustainable development is viewed as just a policy and, more often than not, it is regarded as something that is applicable only to the areas of health and safety, environment, or community philanthropy. However, sustainability requires the collective action of an entire organization on a regular basis, a corporate culture where values are transformed into action.This paper reviews two of the many functional areas through which sustainable development can be pursued. Law and internal auditing are powerful means of instilling values, driving behavioral change, and improving performance. The development and role of each tool vis-a-vis sustainability is reviewed. Suggestions are offered regarding option and joint venture agreements, contract management programs, and various auditing programs based upon international standards and processes, market indices, and codes of conduct.The goal of this paper is to provide a general overview of these functional areas and to encourage further dialogue between employees and management in the workplace. It is hoped that others in the industry will examine the values of their companies, and review the ways in which individuals in all functional areas work, or want to work, on a daily basis. If we can harness collective commitment, creative thinking, and action in sustainable development, then the desired acceptance by stakeholders and improved financial performance will follow."

Heap leach mining has long been an economical method for mining oxide copper ore, and with the U.S. Bureau of Mines' discovery of a way to economically strip gold and silver from carbon, it has become the standard in the gold and silver indus­try as well. Sulfide leach in copper recovery has always been a byproduct of oxide leach mining, although the methods and recovery rates have increased with technology. SX-EW has kindled a new interest in large deposits and dormant dumps of low grade sul­fide ore. Gold ore bio-oxidation was developed in the 1980's, but not tried on a large scale until US Gold built the Tonkin Springs Mine. This mine was dedicated to the large scale production of low grade sulfide ore that could be recovered through the newly discovered bio-oxidation method. On a small scale the method worked, but as time went on, problems with the process were costly and recovery was poor. US Gold did not have the finan­cial backing to perfect the process, and the mine was closed in 1990. Since that time, Newmont Gold Company has taken the lead and has dedicated a lot of resources to the perfection and implementation of this method. Some small mines have discov­ered that if they can use this technology they may be able to dou­ble and triple current ore reserves, because they will be able to mine deposits previously considered not to be economical.

High resolution X-ray computed tomography imaging (with voxel size 48 µm) was conducted on various sandstone samples with different initial degrees of heterogeneity. All samples were imaged intact, and some after having developed localized compaction features in conventional triaxial experiments at high confining pressure, i.e. in the shear enhanced compaction domain (Wong et al., 1997). Our analysis of heterogeneity from X-ray CT data is based on the use of the coefficient of variation d =s /µ (s being the standard deviation and µ the average value). The coefficient of variation was shown by Otani et al. (2005) to be a convenient indicator of material heterogeneity in CT images of experimentally deformed sand piles. The authors reported differences in d before and after their experiments, and interpreted these differences as the effect of grain crushing resulting in more even material distribution within the voxels, hence in lower d values. The same concept was used by Louis et al. (2006) to image contrasts in d values throughout a volume of rock that had developed compaction bands in triaxial laboratory testing, knowing that the bands that had formed could be identified by visual inspection but not on the X-ray CT images. This study resulted in a radically enhanced image of the discrete compacted zones within the CT-scan series, whereby more deformed areas showed relatively low values of coefficient of variation due to grain crushing and pore collapse, as compared to nominally undeformed areas.

Environmental problem is the major concern for any industry and there is a great need to that along green lines. Sangam Dairy being one of the most famous and wide spread Dairies in India, produces wide spectrum of milk products. The BOD levels of effluent water of this industry with MIF treatment were found to be around 100 ppm. Lot of research has been expended in the past to bring down the BOD levels to bare minimum. The main objective of the present study is to minimize the BOD level to the required level stipulated by environmental standards by employing various seeding materials. For this purpose microbes like Bacillus Subtiles, Pseudomonas, Aspergillas, Staphylococcus, and Pencilium have been employed and BOD levels were analyzed. Various Reagents, solutions with different dilution levels have been successfully prepared. Initial and final Dissolved Oxygen levels were determined before and after incubation. From the DO data, BOD was evaluated for all samples and comparison analysis of various seeding material was carried to suggest the efficient seeding material for the ETP plant. In the process, solutions of different dilutions have been prepared using difficult reagents. These samples are treated with above mentioned microbes and BOD levels are estimated. It has been observed that staphylococcus and Pseudomonas proved to be the best seeding materials. When there microbes have employed BOD levels fall to less than 10 and 20 ppm respectively

Reserve audits have increased in recent years as more companies, especially juniors, enter the ranks of producers. Corporate and individual investors are seeking corroboration of stated reserves. The reserve audit satisfies this need. An audit assures investors that the reserves, as presented, are a reasonable and accurate approximation of the quantity and grade of the economically viable material present. The reserve audit verifies that there are no fundamental errors in logic, style or the data base, and that the reserves, as given, may be used for mine planning or economic forecasting. Reserves that pass an audit may be used with confidence in preparing cash flow projections and in deriving net present value or internal rate of return on any given project. This article describes what a consultant does while performing the reserve audit. In performing an audit there are four general areas of concern that must be checked: definitions, parameters, data and procedures. In each of these, the auditor must convince himself that the reserve study has complied with governmental regulations and guidelines, professional standards and industrial practices. Any deviation from these norms must be identified and its effect upon the appropriateness of the reserves evaluated. By concluding that a reserve study passes his audit, the reviewer is stating that there are no fundamental errors in logic or style and that spot checks have revealed no substantive errors in procedure or mechanics. The responsibility for the reserves remains with the entity that compiled the original study.

The estimation of particle liberation is important in the study of mineral concentration. With simple systems, where the densities of the components are low, the liberation can be studied directly by density fractionation. For most practical systems, and particularly for the dense, complex sulphides, the only method known is by measurement in polished section. There are two major difficulties with such measurements. Firstly, the measurements themselves are difficult and considerable care is needed before reproducible results can be achieved. Secondly, a well known stereological problem arises which gives the estimates an inherent bias. The paper discusses both aspects of the problem. The practical features of measurement are treated in detail and a method described which has been developed and proven to give reproducible estimates of the liberation in the section. This discussion relates to automated measurements by QEM*SEM and presents a way of estimating the confidence limits within which measurements lie. Comparisons are shown between measurements made by the traditional manual optical technique and automated equipment. Stereological reconstruction is also discussed briefly. Several methods have been presented in the literature but all are complex and none is yet widely accepted. Area measurements are less biased than linear estimates so a practical approach is to use area measurements in uncorrected form. The topic is still being actively researched so it is expected that one method will soon emerge as the standard technique.

The paper identifies two zones in a Leeds flotation cell. The ratio (13)of the dissipative forces and the interfacial tension force acting on a bubble and a solid particle are shown mathematically to be proportional to the square of the particle diameter for the quiescent zone and inversely proportional to the particle diameter for the turbulent zone. To locate the range of operation, correlations were established for the bubble diameter through photography and bubble counts. 13was found to be fairly constant in the particle size range 38 to 150 ",m, and the level of turbulence unlikely to affect the bubble-particle attachment and hence the beneficiation efficiency. This was verified in a series of flotation runs with a standard Leeds cell and a modified cell of twice the height to increase the capacity of the quiescent zone. A series of tests on the size range 300 to 600 ",m showed that the turbulence level had a marked effect on the cell performance through a relative improvement in the beneficiation efficiency due to the increased height of the cell. To identify the significant variables in the size range 38 to 150 ",m, a factorial design was carried out. Promoter dosage and particle size were found to be significant, aeration rate and impeler speed being insignificant at the 95 per cent confidence level. Multiple regression correlations were established for the recovery of organic material, mineral rejection, and beneficiation efficiency.

The accompanying Fig 1 is a graphical scheme of intermediate accuracy for expediting interconversions of mol, weight, and volume percents. This chart consists of a family of curves of mol or atomic or volume percent plotted against weight percent, each curve in the family providing for a certain ratio of molecular or atomic weights or densities. Thus, the whole range of variations is presented in a very familiar format, and the conversion is effected simply by choosing the proper curve and reading off the required values. An entire series of conversions for a given binary system can be found by following the appropriate curve. It is interesting to examine the analytical geometry of the plots. The curves, which must fit into a square and all join at the 0 and 100 pet points, may be shown to be hyperbolas with their centers on the extension of the diagonal of the square which they intersect. The apparatus is composed of sections of small diameter, seamless steel tubing welded into a continuous flexible tube. At the bottom end a 1/4-in. pipe nipple with a 10 to 15-lb. weight is attached, together with a registering thermometer and a pair of ball check valves. The entire length of tubing is coiled in a single layer upon a drum 4 ft. in diameter which can be attached to the platform of a truck and provided with devices for winding and unwinding the tubing. Connections are made with the upper end of the tubing through a stuffing box, thence to a gas manifold to which a pressure gage is connected. Hydrogen gas is carried in standard 2-ft. cylinders and readings are taken by admitting gas into the tubing from one (or both) of the hydrogen cylinders until the pressure has been built up above that to be measured. At this time the gas supply is cut off. Excess gas escapes through the open end of the tubing and when equilibrium is reached, the pressure is read at the surface gage. Corrections are made for the weight of the column of gas. The advantages claimed for the apparatus include accuracy and the ability to measure the pressures at any number of points without removing the gage. Among the disadvantages of the apparatus are the somewhat bulky size of the equipment and its relatively high initial cost.

The total crude production from the Dutch East Indies, and the British Protectorates of Sarawak and Brunei for 1932 is given in the following table: Production, which had shown a rapid increase from 1921 to 1929, has since been reduced. Exploitation drilling in the majority of the larger fields was suspended and existing production kept within predetermined limits by beaning. Most of the smaller fields were shut down entirely. The depth of producing levels varies widely in the different fields. Shallow fields with drilling depths to 500 meters (1650 ft.) are still numerous as well as those with depths between 500 and 1000 m. (3300 ft.). A few of the newer fields reach greater drilling depths up to 1600 m. (5250 ft.). The deepest exploration well drilled to date (Djambi field, South Sumatra) reached a, depth of 2332 m. (7650 ft.) before abandonment in March, 1930. The specific gravities of the various crude oils produced range between 0.65 (86.2° A.P.I.) and 0.95 (17.5° A.P.I.). The lighter crudes have a high gasoline content and fuel oils are derived from the heavier crudes, which usually are rich in paraffin. This report has presented a literature review of explosion proof¬ing of coal mine electrical equipment. The international "state-of¬the-art" is an extremely difficult definition to quantify but, from the preceding paragraphs, it is evident the international community be¬lieves that it is represented by the International Electrotechnical Commission's Publications. Five questions were set forth during the beginning of this report. Each will be evaluated in light of the preceding discussion. 1. Can Schedule 2G specifications on explosion-proof containers be substantiated? Literature was found in the three main problem areas, surface temperature, mechanical strength, and explosion transmission, to determine this. Surface temperature requirements are adequate except for equipment that can normally overload, and the required intern¬al pressure does afford some margin of safety. However, in terms of safety, gap dimensions are about ten times smaller than that needed. 2. Is it possible to replace the Schedule's design requirements with performance specifications? Two primary areas were determined as mechanical strength and explosion transmission. As was mentioned, for present flange and gap standards, the 150 psig requirement is adequate. Furthermore, it is the authors' opinion that the level cannot be re¬duced if the present gap requirements are retained. The Schedule now requires that 16 tests be run, but the literature suggests that only from three to six examinations are necessary. Mechanisation has been a predominant theme of the past 50 years in the mining industry, particularly underground mining. As the level of technology employed has increased, the anticipated productivity gains have not been realised and the differences are not explained by the demand for higher standards of safety and security. Now, mining costs are so high and productivity so low that the resultant return on investment for many Canadian operations has fallen to levels considered unacceptable in a competitive capital market. Simply continuing technological development cannot reverse this trend and its financial implications. The focus on technological development has distracted us from some basic truths. Systems that are more complex are more likely to fail and cost-effective processes depend on the continuity of productive activity and the flow of material. When putting these facts together, it becomes clear that in a system that has fixed external conditions, the single most crucial issue is the effective management of the operational cycle. By its nature, technology focuses our attention on what gets done and how it gets done, while the crucial issue is the increasingly longer periods in the operational cycle when nothing productive is being done. What is required is to match the level of technological complexity to the fixed system conditions, which are virtually unchangeable. This paper looks at the overall system and objectives and attempts to present an appropriate level of technology for the Canadian mining industry, now and in the foreseeable future.

"Semi Autogenous (SAG) mills exhibit complex interactions between the competing processes occurring inside them. Traditional practice is to measure the operation of the SAG mill at an operating point in terms of its load, power draw, steel load, ore throughput rate, water addition rate and more recently the feed size distribution. However significant departures from standard operating conditions can occur due to changes, for example, in ore hardness, the quest for higher throughputs and mill internal geometry.Fundamental to SAG mill operation are the internal processes that ensure that a given ore throughput and discharge grind size are obtained and maintained. These processes can be measured using non-contact acoustic emissions from the SAG mills which utilise the information rich noise that is generated by the grinding, flow and charge movement inside a mill. Non-contact acoustic in-mill measurements can be used for the validation of discrete element modelling (DEM). The approach being reported in this paper is to model the individual physical processes and then to simulate the assemblage of a physical mill.By modelling the assemblage of steel balls in a 1 m pilot mill and duplicating the experimental arrangement exactly with the PFC3D model, it was possible to replicate the pattern of falling balls in the experimental mill. Furthermore, the key features of the acoustic emission spectrum that was calculated compared favourably to the measured spectrum at low frequencies. The experimental spectrum is shown in Figure 1."

THIS paper gives the results of an investigation of the specific resistance and temperature coefficient of the electrical resistance of nickel and its important alloy, monel metal. For most of the pure metals, the temperature coefficient of resistance is approximately 0.0004 per degree centigrade at 2.0° C. Nickel and iron, however, are exceptions. This property is important as it gives us good material for the construction of thermometers and other instruments involving electrical control. A summary of information on this subject has been published by the Bureau of Standards.1 The present experiments antedate this publication by several years and as the information obtained is not contained in it, the results of the experiments are published as additional information. ELECTRICAL PROPERTIES OF PURE NICKEL It is generally conceded that the lowest values for electrical resistance are obtained in the purest metal. In the case of nickel, the best material obtainable is electrolytic nickel, which contains approximately. 99.80 per cent. nickel, 0.15 per cent. iron, and 0.05 per cent. copper. Any cobalt that may be present is included in the nickel figure. If the electrolytic sheet has been deposited without intermission, it is possible to cut a section from the sheet and roll it into wire without melting. By this means a nickel wire may be obtained that is uncontaminated by any of the impurities always taken up by nickel during melting.

Transit A light weight, totally enclosed theodolite, especially designed for mining, has been placed on the market by Askania Werke, A. G. The instrument weighs only 41/4 lb and measures 51/8 x 71/2 in. without tripod and in a waterproof aluminum hood. It may be mounted on tripod or bracket without removing the protective hood. [ ] Standard equipment includes diagonal eyepiece rotating in all directions which eliminates need to be in line with scope for sighting and makes an auxiliary scope unnecessary for steep sights. The transit reads direct to 1 minute and may be estimated to 6 seconds by means of optical micrometer on both horizontal and vertical circles. The telescope in vertical position serves as optical plummet, sighting through an opening in the base. The instrument is shown above mounted for attaching to a pin driven in timber or rock, eliminating tripod or set-up bar in cramped quarters. The chain clamp in the lower picture is used on timber or steel ground supports. Complete with carrying case and set-up brackets, ready for use in a raise, it weighs less than 6 lb, and the protective hood remains on until the instrument is securely mounted. DESPITE strikes, domestic production of copper and zinc in 1951 rose about 3 pct and 10 pct, respectively. Lead output fell only about 7 pct. Primary refined, including processed scrap and imported concentrates, was somewhat higher for zinc, and slightly lower for copper and lead. Prospects are for moderately larger mine and refined production in 1952 according to Standard & Poor's analysis of nonferrous metals. The survey goes on to report domestic copper prices averaged 14 pct higher in 1951, lead prices 30 pct higher, and zinc prices 32 pct higher. The 2¢ rise in zinc and lead ceilings in October will lift the average price in 1952 over 8 pet, assuming no further price change. Currently, OPS appears opposed to raising the 24 ½ ¢ copper ceiling to the 24 ½ ¢ maximum on imported metal. The steep premiums in world markets are likely to be reduced in 1952. Sales in 1951 were at new peaks. A further moderate rise is indicated for 1952. Earnings of the industry were at a new high in 1951. The increase for companies covered in the survey was perhaps 25 pet, despite a tax rate of about 53 pet, against about 40 pct. in 1950. Relatively maintained to moderately higher earnings are currently indicated for 1952. About two thirds of the companies covered in the survey raised dividends, including extras, in 1951. In general, maintained payments appear probable in 1952.

INTRODUCTION Frontier-Kemper Constructors, Inc. is an Evansville, Indiana based heavy construction contractor engaged in projects for both the public and private sectors of the underground construction industry. Construction activities range from conventional shaft, slope, tunnel and chamber excavation through state-of-the-art mechanical excavation, ground freezing, standard support and structural concrete operations. Conventional excavation and concreting equipment, as well as raise boring machines, road headers, tunnel boring machines, and freeze plants are owned, operated, maintained and modified "in-house" to suit the needs of individual projects. The balance of this paper wilt present a general overview of the Frontier-Kemper planning and construction operations on the recently completed Phase II of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, John Day Dam, Juvenile Fish Bypass Project. General Project History The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is responsible for designing, constructing and maintaining various navigation and impoundment structures on the nation's inland waterways. Maintenance involves both the work required to maintain the structure in fully-operable condition and the ongoing work required to maintain a positive impact on the environment. John Day Dam is located on the Columbia River approximately 95 km (60 miles) upstream of The Dalles, Oregon. It was constructed to: provide electric power to the Pacific Northwest; provide Locking for up-and-downstream bound commercial and private watercraft; act as a water impoundment structure to control flooding conditions; and to provide a source of irrigation water

This paper describes the development of a monitoring architecture that allows for continuous monitoring of the process of mining, the underground environment, the state of the rockmass and its response to mining. The system is based on an open standard and is non-propriety. It allows for dense sensor arrays in the workplace, wire less communication to the closest power line, and TCP/IP communication to a central server. Continuous monitoring and quantification of the appropriate parameters allows a mine to optimise its mine process; to dynamically access the safety and health risk to people and equipment; and to quantify exposure to potential heath hazards such as dust, gas or noise. Current application examples of continuous monitoring include an application to optimise drilling and blasting thought fragmentation monitoring; an application of wireless sensor network-based monitoring in to provide early detection of potential rockfalls; and a trail to continuously assess the gold grade at the shaft through correlation with radioactivity. It is unlikely that a single monitored parameter will provide adequate knowledge of the assessed risk or even an optimisation approach. Multiple parameters are being combined using cognitive science tools such as Bayesian theory and other statistical methods to improve the accuracy and relevance of, for example, risk quantification.
