The Fogg Museum expansion project required excavation and construction in a congested urban area in Cambridge, Massachusetts. A soldier pile tremie concrete (SPTC) wall provided the support of excavation and now serves as the permanent basement wall of the new expansion of the museum. The existing Fogg museum had a single basement level. The new expansion has a two-level basement for new exhibit space and an amphitheater. The east side of the site is about 20 feet above the basement level of the existing Fogg structure which resulted in a significant unbalanced load that needed to be resolved without damaging the original Fogg structure. The SPTC wall was supported with a combination of tiebacks and internal bracing. The final depth of the excavation was about 40 feet below street level. Strict movement control was imposed because the existing museum contained an Italian Renaissance-style courtyard. The southeast corner of the SPTC wall had to accommodate underpinning of an historic concrete ramp which was ultimately incorporated into the expansion. Challenges during construction included excavating the SPTC wall panels up to 12 feet into argillite bedrock which had occasional diabase dikes and sills. The Bureau of Mines investigated methods for beneficiating platinumgroup metal ores from the Stillwater Complex , Montana , as part of its program to increase the supply of critical and strategic minerals and metals from domestic resources . This report presents results of a 5- day continuous campaign employing a pilot flotation mill to recover sulfide concentrate containing platinum- palladium values from anorthositic ore . A mercaptobenzothiazole - sulfuric acid reagent suite was used . The pilot flotation mill was operated at an average feed rate of 106 lb/ hr of ore . A rougher concentrate containing 8.5 pct of the feed was prepared ; it assayed 1.1 oz /ton Pt and 3.5 oz / ton Pd . Recovery of platinum and palladium were 91 and 87 pct , respectively .

Hydrocyclones are the most commonly used classifiers in the mining industry. The reason for this is their low operating cost and a small footprint. Data from plant trials where screens replaced hydrocyclones indicated that lower bypass of fines and sharper separation could improve breakage rates, with a positive effect on flotation circuit performance throughput. Despite the importance of classification, hydrocyclones have not received as much attention as more expensive comminution units, and their technological progress has been incremental. Noticeable water split (Rf) reductions of a semi-inverted hydrocyclone have been reported in the past. According to theory, the hydrocyclone with reduced Rf will improve classification of fines. A classification study using semi-inverted hydrocyclones was conducted to determine if a hydrocyclone could be operated in a way that would minimise misclassified fines. The classification performance of a semi-inverted hydrocyclone will be presented in this paper and other potential applications will be discussed. Recent advances in mechanistic ball mill modelling are expected to allow for more accurate predictions that overcome the well-known limitations of phenomenological approaches, including their inability to predict the effect of liner geometry and their wear, in grinding. Although able to describe continuous operation, the UFRJ model of ball mills has only been validated in the past in mills that operate in batch mode, either in laboratory or pilot scale. The present work demonstrates the application of the mechanistic UFRJ ball mill model to predict fine grinding of iron ore in a pelletising plant in Brazil, the first application of such a mechanistic modelling in continuous mode. It shows that the model provides accurate descriptions of flows after iterations in a closed-circuit with hydrocyclones. Keywords: Ball mill, iron ore, grinding, modelling, particle breakage

The process of particle size reduction by grinding is inherently inefficient and involves high capital and operating costs. In particular, ball milling is one of the important unit operations in the iron ore pelletizing process. The mill product, due to its physical properties, determines the efficiency of subsequent stages of classification, filtration and pelletizing, thus impacting the quality of iron ore pellets. The work demonstrates the application of the population balance model in the optimization of a full-scale ball mil circuit grinding pellet fines with the aim to evaluate the optimal solids concentration to improve iron ore pellet quality. Initially, detailed experimentation was carried out in a 25.4 cm diameter batch mill and a relationship for mill scale-up using a linear population balance model in wet grinding systems was established. The selection and breakage parameters and the specific selection functions were determined for pellet feed iron ore. It was possible to identify the non-normalizable nature of the breakage functions of the ore studied, which were modeled properly. Afterwards, as a result of incorporating the specific selection functions and breakage functions into the linear population balance model, it was possible to predict product size distributions in the pilot and plant scale mills (0.416 and 5.18 m diameter, respectively) from data obtained in the 25.4 cm diameter mill. Finally, with this scale-up procedure it was possible to appraise the plant scale optimization via laboratory scale grinding mill tests. The effects of changing percent solids were assessed in order to improve the industrial mill performance and the optimal value should be in the range from 76 to 80%.

Friction-reducing textures for lubricated mechanisms have received much attention since the advent of microtexturing techniques. In this work we consider the piston ring/liner contact, numerically simulating the rings as they slide against a textured liner. This situation has not been sufficiently analyzed because its numerical complexity is much greater than that of texturing the rings. Further, we consider the actual typical geometries of oil-control, wiper and compression rings, under realistic loads and velocities. The results show the possibility of friction reduction when the texture on the liner is properly designed, identifying starvation alleviation as a crucial intervening mechanism.

Este artigo descreve a utilização da proteção cerâmica do composto SiO2(62-68)-MgO+CaO(29-39) na região frontal das máquinas que injetam massa refratária para interromper corridas de ferro gusa e escória em estado líquido nos altos fornos. O novo modelo de proteção (protótipo) apresentou uma economia de aproximadamente R$ 32 mil reais comparado com o composto anteriormente utilizado CaO-Al2O3-SiO2. Apresentou também menor toxidade, já que possui em sua morfologia menor quantidade de fibras. Estas fibras quando inaladas provocam danos aos tecidos internos dos pulmões sendo prejudicial à saúde. Houve manutenção dos índices de produção, pois em todas as amostras da nova proteção cerâmica testada, a parte frontal foi preservada possibilitando a injeção de massa refratária na quantidade e pressão necessárias para reconstituição do comprimento do furo que retira o ferro e escória do interior do alto forno, possibilitando um volume interno maior para se produzir mais. Os modelos de proteção usados nos testes foram da empresa Morganite. A verificação da morfologia e posterior caracterização do material foram executadas por Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura e Difração de Raios-X.

O Steel Frame é um sistema construtivo eficiente e sustentável. Sua estrutura é em perfis de aço e pode suportar até 4 pavimentos, e sua fundação é em radie. Por isso, os perfis da base são revestidos de manta asfáltica para serem protegidos de agentes degradantes. Após algum tempo, a manta perde sua eficácia, expondo o perfil ao meio. O objetivo dessa pesquisa é explicar a corrosão do perfil, através da investigação por MEV, EDS e teste de tração, mostrando a influência do concreto no mesmo, mediante a determinação de suas características mecânicas após o contato. Os resultados mostram difusão dos elementos do concreto no aço, afetando suas propriedades mecânicas através do aumento de limite de resistencia a tração e redução do módulo de elasticidade. Houve também redução na superfície de zinco, mostrando principio de corrosão.

O presente estudo teve por objetivo verificar a independência tanto da Curva Limite de Tensão (CLT), quanto da Curva Limite de Deformação Plástica Efetiva (CLDPE) em relação à trajetória de deformação. Para tal, foram utilizadas Curvas Limite de Conformação (CLC) de aço livre de intersticiais (Interstitial Free - IF), determinadas, primeiramente, por meio de trajetórias lineares e, posteriormente, por trajetórias bi-lineares estabelecidas por níveis de pré-deformação nos modos de tração uniaxial e estiramento biaxial simétrico. As previsões da CLT e da CLDPE, calculadas a partir das deformações limites da CLC convencional em trajetórias lineares e bi-lineares, mostraram-se independentes em relação à trajetória de deformação. Entretanto, verificou-se que o critério de escoamento adotado tem grande influência na forma e posição destas curvas limites.

The aim of this research is the study of the WHIMS parameters on the improving process of a local (DD: Djebel Debbagh, East of Algeria) kaolin. The obtained results of performed XRF, SEM, and XRD characterization showed that this local material is an alumino-silicate containing kaolinite and halloysite with MnO and Fe2O3 impurities (respectively 39.30% and 34.67% alumina and 38.18% and 39.70% silica in both samples (DD2 and DD3). After homogenization, crushing, and milling, a multiparameters factorial experimentation (grain sizes, intensity, and dimension of matrix balls) showed that WHIMS is an effective process to improve the quality of this kaolin, mainly: removing their impurities. Dimensions of matrix balls (Db) = 2 cm, intensity of the applied magnetic field (I) = 1.5 T, and grain sizes (Dp) = > 100 < 250 μm) are the optimal values to reach 91.06% for manganese and 93.45% for iron as removing yield. The statistical analysis of these results sorted the investigation parameters and showed that Db has the highest and most significant influence on the recovery of iron and manganese particles. The magnetic field intensity (I) has a less important influence while the grain size has an average influence (positive on the iron recovery but a negative one on the recovery of manganese).

O moinho vertical normalmente é dimensionado através da aplicação de um fator de eficiência sobre o Índice de Trabalho de Bond (BWI) ou sobre o consumo específico de energia (kWh/t) obtido através de teste em moinho de bolas de laboratório. Para confirmar o dimensionamento do moinho vertical são realizados testes em escala piloto com grandes volumes de amostras. O presente trabalho apresenta uma metodologia para simulação de moinho vertical através de testes de moagem em escala de laboratório utilizando um moinho de bolas convencional e amostras bitoladas em diferentes faixas granulométricas. A amostra de minério de ferro estudada foi utilizada em uma campanha de testes em escala piloto com moinho vertical. As simulações realizadas utilizando a metodologia de Austin apresentaram muito boa correlação com os resultados dos testes em escala piloto.

It has been said that safety promotion passes through four stages--the band-playing, the machine-guarding, the protective equipment, and finally the educational stage; the last is the most important in the development of the safety program. It has been estimated that only 15 percent of accidents can be pre- vented by machine guarding and protective equipment; the other 85 percent must be stopped by the safety efforts of the individual workers and their supervisory officials, and one of the fundamentals of safety work is the education of workers to develop safety consciousness or safety mindedness. One way of educating men to think about safety is by the use of posters. Safety engineers at the Calumet 2 Hecla mines in Michigan have been conduct- ing a safety contest among the men by the use of posters of an unusual type in addition to those usually employed to illustrate bad practices and to display the number of days without a lost-time accident. The first requisite for the success of the safety poster is a good artist or draftsman; in the poster contest instituted at the Calumet & Hecla mines two sheets were prepared illustrating various conditions in the slope workings, including a large number of unsafe practices. The object of the contest was to get the men to think about safety through criticism of the unsafe conditions displayed on the posters. The following notice accom- panied the posters:

A Niobras é uma empresa do grupo China Molybdenum Internacional (CMOC), recentemente adquirida do grupo Anglo American, que extrai e beneficia minério de nióbio proveniente da Mina Boa Vista, situada no município de Catalão – GO, e transforma o concentrado de pirocloro em liga de ferro – nióbio em seu site situado em Ouvidor/GO, sendo este o produto final comercializado. A extração de minério na Mina Boa Vista iniciou-se no ano de 2000 com o objetivo de alimentar a Planta de Concentração Boa Vista com minério oxidado, para manter o nível de produção de nióbio, uma vez que a antiga mina estava em processo de exaustão. Com a exaustão do minério oxidado prevista para 2016, em 2011 foi desenvolvido um projeto chamado BVFR (Boa Vista Fresh Rock) para produção de nióbio através da extração e beneficiamento de minério contido em rocha fresca. O Projeto BVFR foi aprovado no início de 2012, concluído em outubro de 2014 e foram investidos mais de US$ 350 milhões para sua implantação. O Projeto BVFR aumenta a vida útil da mina (Life Of Mine) e do negócio em 20 anos, triplica a produção de nióbio da Niobras e incrementa o EBTIDA em mais de 250% e gerou um aumento de mais de 400 empregos diretos (entre contratadas e próprios).

Blindagens balísticas são projetadas para resistir a uma determinada ameaça com a menor relação peso/resistência balística possível, isto é, oferecer a melhor resistência à penetração de projéteis e fragmentos provenientes de armas de fogo com menor peso. Os materiais compósitos são, atualmente, aqueles que possuem a maior probabilidade de obter estes requisitos, por possuírem flexibilidade de alcançarem o conjunto de propriedades mais apropriadas para cada nível de proteção e por serem mais leves. Os compósitos reforçados por tecidos de fibra sintética são atualmente os mais utilizados. Com o foco nos aspectos ambientais, este trabalho produziu e avaliou um compósito híbrido laminado de matriz polimérica reforçado por manta de curauá e tecido de poliamida aromática. O compósito foi avaliado segundo o tipo de falha ocorrida após o ensaio balístico, utilizando a análise por microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV), bem como, a análise visual. Por meio da análise dos resultados, foi possível observar que o processo de microdelaminações na interface matriz/tecidos, bem como as falhas intralamelares (trincas na matriz) proporcionaram uma maior dissipação da energia de impacto.

No cenário econômico atual do mercado siderúrgico, otimizações de processo que aumentem o rendimento metálico estão no alvo das empresas competitivas. Além disso, cada vez mais os clientes exigem níveis mais elevados de qualidade e menor índice de recusa. Neste contexto, desenvolver trabalhos que conciliem otimização e garantia de qualidade são prioritários para o negócio. O objetivo deste trabalho é definir o menor descarte de início de lingotamento para aços com aplicações severas com total garantia de qualidade. Foi elaborada uma metodologia específica para avaliação da qualidade dos produtos: placa e bobina laminada a quente. Primeiramente, avaliou-se a quantidade de inclusões não metálicas em placas, o que permitiu determinar o comprimento de descarte mínimo necessário para garantia de qualidade das placas. Posteriormente, análises de inclusões também foram realizadas em bobinas para confirmar os resultados da ação de alteração de tonelagem de descarte. Os resultados mostraram que as placas produzidas após o descarte determinado pelo estudo resultaram em bobinas aptas para atendimento das aplicações, sem nenhuma perda de qualidade.

Structural steels containing chromium have become widely used in the last 20 years. In the earlier part of this period the major applications were in chromium-molybdenum aircraft tubing and similar special high-strength steels. During the past 10 years there has been a notable expansion in the use of chromium-bearing steel for structural purposes when welding was utilized for fabrication. The chromium-bearing steels introduced by Saklatwallal (chromium-copper), Kinzel2 (chromium-manganese-silicon), and Schultz3 (chromium-copper) are being extensively used at the present time. General Effects of Chromium Chromium is so widely known for its carbide-forming tendency that its capacity to stabilize oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus is often overlooked. In low-carbon steels of the structural type these so-called secondary characteristics become more prominent. For this reason also, chromium in structural steel is definitely a toughening agent. As the carbon content is increased, the more widely known hardening effect becomes more evident. In low-carbon steels chromium increases the notched-bar impact strength substantially. This property persists at subzero temperatures and is utilized for low-temperature service in chromium-copper steel.4 Chromium also reduces any tendency to strain-aging embrittlement. In addition to improving the toughness of steels with the usual impurities, chromium has the specific property of counteracting the brittleness induced by high phosphorus.5,6 In steels low in carbon and alloys, chromium has an almost negligible effect on tensile strength, and a hardening influence is noticeable only in the stronger steels. The ductility of welds adjacent to the base plate is also improved by chromium, both in the range of foolproof welding steels having strengths of less than 80,000 lb. per sq. in. as well as in the higher strength steels.

When tunneling through karstic terrain, diverse and complex karst structures are to be expected. By means of drilling ahead of the face using drill jumbos, these structures can be detected to such a degree that by applying proper support measures both open karst cavities and karst holes surrounded by boulders embedded in soft rock can be mastered without causing any break-outs. Support measures such as spiles ahead of excavation, sealing off cavities, back?lling with sand, etc. have to be planned schematically and adapted to the dimensions and formations of the karst structures on site. An essential requirement for a smooth excavation procedure is the availablility of all necessary tunneling equipment for excavation by drill and blast as well as for excavation of soil, with experienced tunnel engineers being in charge of any adaptions on site.

The prime objective of geophysical exploration is to promote the economical and rapid dis-covery of mineral or oil deposits of commercial value. To a few this concept as applied in min-ing may signify the direct discovery of ore-bodies, but to the geophysical engineer this latter Idea is one of the most insidious and detrimental misapprehensions which he has to combat. The destruction of this annoying obstacle to the progress of geophysical exploration reveals the kernel of truth behind it, that the exploration geophysicist has for the better part of two decades been concerned primarily with the discovery of mineral formations favorable to the occur-rence of commercial ore. There is a very real distinction here, since geophysical methods are capable of discovering certain mineral formations such as sulphide bodies or quartz veins, but are totally incompetent to predict whether or not they constitute ore; that is. whether or not they contain minerals of economic value in the amounts requisite to repay extraction. The art of geophysical exploration is now, however, rapidly outgrowing these early limita-tions. The rate of this growth will in large measure depend on the recognition by the mining industry of the fact that geophysics can play a role far wider and more important than it usual-ly does now, in guiding the future exploration and development of mineral deposits. It is my own firm conviction that as time marches on we will see the methods of applied geophysics turned more and more to the delineation of both minor and major structural features. The outlining of such features having a bearing on the probable loci of mineral deposition will be of inestimable value in guiding the development of a mining district. WHEN the Plutonium Project was started in the spring of 1942 there was no technology to produce uranium metal of the required purity. Not only was there no such metal available; no one knew how to make it or fabricate it after it was made. Since this time vast technical effort has been ex-pended in the atomic energy field. A short 15 years later the metallurgy of uranium is probably better known than that of any other metal, with the possible exception of steel. At the beginning of the 1942 drive to obtain pure uranium metal the most available raw material was black uranium oxide (U3O8) of about 92 pct purity from the Great Bear Lake region of Canada. It took only three months for the project chemists to develop a process for bringing the purity of this oxide up to 99+ pct and another three months for Mallinckrodt Chemical Co. of St. Louis to build the purification plant and get it into operation. In early summer of 1942 the purified brown oxide (UO2) started moving to the Metal Hydrides Co. in Beverly, Mass., and to the Westinghouse Research Laboratory in Bloomfield, N. J., both of which had been granted Government contracts to try to make pure uranium metal.
