The plummet lamp, to which I called the attention of the Institute, at the Bethlehem meeting, in August, 1871, with the improvement of the compensating ring, suggested by Mr. Heller, having come into general use for mine surveying in this country, and my attention having been called to the fact that it could not be employed in mines in which there was danger of meeting with fire-damp, I have so modified it that it can be used in all cases with safety. Mining engineers, who are in active practice in those districts where fire-damp is met with in the mines (and I am sorry to say it is becoming much more common in the anthracite regions), know how dangerous their work is when they are called upon to survey such mines, particularly when they are obliged to run lines in those parts of a mine which have been unworked, since by opening of doors, brattice, etc., to get the sights, they are liable to disarrange the currents of air, and cause any fire-damp that may have accumulated in the old workings to find its way into the levels, etc., where the party is at work. It is, therefore, very dangerous to leave an open light (such as the original form of plummet lamp) in an old breast or gangway, even when the safety lamp has shown that no fire-damp is present, for the opening of the doors, etc., may drive the fire-damp to the light, and thus endanger the lives of the engineers. The improved form of plummet lamp, now shown to you, can be used either with or without the safety apparatus. Upon the top of the plumb-bob portion of the old lamp a screw is cut, upon which a ring A is screwed. (See Plate 11.) On the external cylindrical part of this ring two small conical holes are drilled, 180' apart. The compensating ring, by which the plumb-bob part of the lamp is suspended, passes over the ring A, and is fastened to it by two small screws having conical points, which fit into the conical holes in the ring A. The safety apparatus resembles, to a certain extent, that of the Mueseler lamp. It consists of a ring B and plate C, which are united by four rods. The plate C has a cylindrical hole in the middle, and four apertures distributed radially around it. Three nickel based superalloys (7.5%Cr+5%Co+2%Mo+1%Ti+5%Al and Ni balance (wt%)) containing different amounts of W and Re were produced in the single crystal (SX) condition utilizing the Bridgman casting process. First, the effect of different levels of Re, and W on chemical microsegregation were investigated by EPMA quantitative analysis, and eutectic phase fraction analysis. Second, in order to investigate the effect of these refractory elements addition on oxidation behaviour, isothermal oxidation testing of the SX nickel based superalloys was conducted at 1000°C for 277 hours under 3 ppm moisture content of air in a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). All three SX nickel based superalloys revealed an excellent SX solidification structure with a common primary dendrite arm spacing of -250 µm and a large fraction of ?/?' eutectic located between the secondary dendrite arms. From the average EPMA compositional results, with the exception of Ni, elements such as Cr, Co, Re, Mo, and W all tended to segregate towards the dendrite core during solidification, while Al, Ti, and Ta were present in greater quantity in the last liquid phase to solidify, which resulted in large eutectic ?/? ' phases to form within the interdendritic regions. As the nominal level of Re increased, microsegreagation of Re, W, Cr and Mo increased, indicating that Re had a much greater influence on partitioning behavior compared to W. Figure la shows the specific mass gain as a function of exposure time for each alloy. An alloy with 2wt% of W and Re (Alloy B) exhibited less weight gain compared to two other alloys with either higher content of W or Re (Alloy A and C). Microstructural and compositional analyses of oxidized samples were conducted using SEM and EDS. Figure lb shows the typical surface morphologies of the oxidized Alloys A and B. It is evident that more oxide nodules (indicated by arrows in the figure) were presented in Alloy A. It is speculated that the amount of these nodules was responsible for more mass gain in Alloy A compared to the two other alloys. From the examination of the longitudinal section of the oxidized samples as shown in Figure 2, for Alloy A, nodules actually penetrated deep into the material. For Alloy B, however, a relatively uniform and continuous oxide layer was developed and deeply attacked areas were not observed. It was also found that preferential oxidized regions were located at the area between the ?/?' eutectic phase and the dendrite arms where the concentration of refractory elements was relatively high. Therefore, it is plausible that the oxidation kinetics of these alloys is related to the extent of microsegregation.

"High-cycle fatigue experiments were conducted at 800°C in laboratory air for three ferrite stainless steels including 15CrNbTi, 15CrMoNbTi and 18CrNbTi, where the stress ratio of 0.l was adopted. The experimental results show that at 800°C, the fatigue limit of the 15CrMoNbTi steel is the highest, the fatigue limit of the 15CrNbTi steel is slightly lower than that of the 15CrMoNbTi steel, and the fatigue limit of the 18CrNbTi steel is the lowest. At the same maximum stress, the 15CrMoNbTi steel has longer fatigue lives than the 15CrNbTi steel in the low stress area, while the 18CrNbTi steel has the shortest fatigue life. In addition, the observations on the fracture surfaces of fatigue specimens reveal that the fatigue cracks initiate transgranularly at the free surface of the specimens and propagate in a transgranular mode.IntroductionIn modem automotive industry, the manufacturers have paid great efforts to clean exhaust gas and to improve fuel economy. It is thought an effective way to increase the temperature of combustion chamber in automotive engine. And thus, the manifold closed to the engine in automotive exhaust system can suffer high temperature up to approximately 1000°C. Because of their relatively low thermal expansion coefficient, high yield strength at elevated temperature and good fatigue resistance, ferrite stainless steels, especially added with alloying elements such as Mo, Nb and Ti, are increasingly used for automotive exhaust systems [1-3]. In fact, exhaust manifold operated under high frequency vibration and exposed to high temperature exhausting gas also requires good fatigue resistance at elevated temperature. Some studies on the high temperature fatigue characteristics of stainless steel have been documented. It has beeen found that the fatigue limit of four ferrite stainless steels including 409L, 436L, 429EM and 444 (18Cr- 2Mo) reduces significantly with increasing temperature [4, 5]. In the research concerning the effect of a-phase embrittlement on fatigue behavior in a high-chromium ferrite stainless steel, it is noted that the precipitation of brittle a-phase will reduce the crack initiation and growth resistances and result in a decrease in fatigue limit [6]. In this investigation, the high-cycle fatigue behavior of three ferrite stainless steels including 18CrNbTi, 15CrNbTi and 15CrMoNbTi at 800°C have been studied to address the mechanical aspect of high-cycle fatigue behavior for ferrite stainless steels and to provide the theoretical reference for the safe design of automotive exhaust system."

Any one who has been involved with the mining or the treatment of gold-bearing ores will agree that at the end of the total process, the quantity of gold recovered is never as much as was expected. These short falls are usually explained away by claiming that:- the original evaluation of the ore being mined was inaccurate the plant treatment process is not at its optimum theft is taking place excessive dilution occurs during mining The truth of the matter is that the gold is being "lost". During all the stages of its production, starting from the mining, right through to the smelting process, a certain amount of gold is not recovered. When a newly found gold deposit is being evaluated and the drilling data being analysed, cautionary factors are applied so that the grade is not over-stated. Once the decision has been taken to start mining and development is in progress, the exposed ore is sampled. When Again, when this data is being analysed more safety factors are used to ensure that when a piece of ground is given a block-value, the gold content is not over estimated. mining actually takes place and the ore transported to the plant for treatment, the metallurgical department also introduces certain safety factors when predicting how much gold will be recovered. This shows that the quantity of gold that one expects to finally recover is already a conservative figure. The actual quantity recovered invariably falls short of this figure, in fact, South African gold mines are satisfied when achieving a Mine Call Factor (MCF) of 85%. In the last few years a great deal of work has been carried out to investigate how this unaccounted for gold is lost and what steps can be taken to remedy the situation. Previously mined areas were re-swept using the traditional hand brush method; experiments were carried out with water jets sometimes in conjunction with compressed air and even small portable vacuum cleaners were tried. None of these methods were totally successful in recovering the left over gold but the use of vacuum systems showed the most potential. the In South Africa this has resulted in introduction of high-powered vacuum systems on the gold mines to suck-up this lost gold. These were initially introduced in the mining areas, particularly old areas, to recover any left over ore. The results proved extremely profitable, So much SO that presently, well over 120 suction systems are doing this type of work. This success encouraged plant operators to look at areas of potential loss in the plant itself. This has resulted in an increasing number of machines being supplied to gold plants mainly for clean-up applications with the bonus that the material sucked up invariably contains gold.

A LTHOUGH the efficiency of coal utilization has A improved steadily since the turn of the century as a result of continued research and development, little of this increase in efficiency can be credited to improvements in the single retort stoker. There are still numerous problems connected with the burning of coal on this type of unit, the solution of which would be a stimulus to coal and stoker sales and a boon to the user. Among the more critical of these problems is that of burning slack bituminous coal of strong caking tendency and containing large percentages of fine material. With the increased trend toward mechanical mining, it may be expected that in the future an even larger percentage of the coal available for use on this class of stokers will contain higher percentages of the fine sizes, thus aggravating an already serious problem. During the war, the problem of efficient and economic burning of available coals on the single retort industrial stoker, particularly the class 4 stokers (301 to 1200 lb per hr), became quite critical in many localities. In addition to the inherent problems associated with the use of this class stoker, the coals available were frequently not those best suited for use on this equipment and the manpower shortage made it difficult as well as expensive for the consumer to provide the labor necessary to keep the iires in reasonably satisfactory condition. Although exact figures on the number of class 4 stokers are not available, the yearly tonnages of coal consumed are of considerable consequence and have been estimated* at between 15 and 20 million the stoker research staff of the Mineral Industries Experiment Station of The Pennsylvania State College was requested to study the performance of the single retort industrial stoker and to undertake a program of research on the more efficient burning of bituminous coal on this class of unit. Various aspects of overall problem have been investigated since the inception of this program in 1942, only one of which is here reported. General Considerations There are numerous factors which appear directly or indirectly to affect the overall performance of bituminous coal underfeed stokers, such as the caking or matting properties of the coal, the contact relationships between coal and air, the ash fusion characteristics, the burning rate, and the design of the stoker and furnace in which the coal is burned. "THAT WHICH WE CANNOT SEE" INTRODUCTION Often it has been stated that the greatest of all fears is fear itself - fear created only by that which we cannot see or by that which we fail to understand. The elimination or minimization of fear can best be accomplished by a thorough understanding of the underlying causes of the fear. As related to the mining industry the omnipresent fear is the dread of acquiring cancer through accumulated exposure to "that which we cannot see" - radioactivity. The understanding of the resulting exposure effects can best be obtained through acquisition of authentic data and the subsequent analysis of the same by a group of highly qualified specialists. I may point out that the nuclear industry and its source, uranium mining, greatly surpass any other industries in the degree of public awareness as to its potential environmental effects. Public out-cry has always influenced major decisions relating to how industries conduct their operations and much of their effort has resulted in many changes. The issues of health and safety in the mining industry have created considerable public concern, but intense concern to those of us directly involved within the industry. Increasing concern regarding the effect of human activity on the quality of the outer environment of air, land, and water has developed within the past two decades. There is now a growing concern about the health and safety of persons at work in their inner environment, of their working-places in industry. Hearings and investigations conducted in Canada by three appointed "Royal Commissions" have all confirmed that this concern is well justified when focused on the health and safety of workers in our mines. REGULATORY CONTROL OF URANIUM MINING OPERATIONS In Canada, the ownership of mineral resources and the control of their extraction, except for uranium, is vested under the "British North America Act" in the provinces. In all provinces the statutory basis for health and safety provisions in the mining industry can be found in the provincial "Mining Acts" with each province assuming the responsibility to produce its own "Mining Act". In particular, all of the Mining Acts in Canada place upon the management of a mine the responsibility to ensure that provincial provisions are met. The air in three U.S. underground coal mines has been sampled. The data developed show the relative importance of the various pollutants and quantify the need for control. Total respirable particulate matter (TRPM) was found to be the critical pollutant (the one requiring the most dilution for control). TRPM is considered to be "respirable coal dust" by procedures approved for sampling in U.S. underground coal mines. However, this "respirable coal dust" also includes diesel particulate matter (DPM) and particulate from other sources. While "respirable coal dust" was the critical pollutant, Raman spectroscopic analysis showed that more than half of this "respirable coal dust" was DPM. The DPM in the samples ranged from 22 to 152% of the 2 mg/m3 limit for respirable coal dust. Thus DPM was the critical pollutant using the 2 mg/m3 respirable coal dust limit. SO2 gas produced by the combustion of diesel fuel containing sulfur was the second-most critical pollutant. Characteristic curve slope (CCS) values were calculated to determine the quantitites of the various pollutants generated per unit of diesel haulage activity. Mine 1 had the highest TRPM CCS values with 29 mg/m3/%C02 for the Ramcar and 57 mg/m3/%C02 for the Haulageway location. The highest coal particulate CCS measured was 30 mg/m3/%CO2 and the highest diesel particulate CCS measured was 27 mg/m3/ %C02. Both of these high values were measured in the Mine 1 haulageway location. Calculations were made to determine the controlling CO2 concentrations (CCC) at which all other measured pollutants would be within their limits. These CCC values, which, for the mines sampled, were based on TRPM, varied from a low of about 0.07% for the Mine 1 haulageway location, to a high of about 0.15% for the Mine 2 Ramcar and haulageway locations. Weekly average CO2 concentrations measured in these mines ranged from 0.09 to 0.11 % for the Ramcar, from 0.05 to 0.09% for the haulageway, and from 0.08 to 0.11 % for the return. The concentrations of TRPM ranged from 1 and 2 mg/m3 in mine areas frequented by personnel, and to greater than 4 mg/m3 in returns where personnel are not exposed.

FOR some time mining engineers have been interested in the possibility of using small diameter shafts, sunk by core drilling, as aids to ventilation and as emergency escapeways. The possibilities are interesting to contemplate, but new methods involve unknowns, and interest tends to remain passive until these unknowns are solved. Recently we have completed two 36-in. diam. core drilled shafts, and wish to make the data on these available to the industry. Both shafts were drilled for the McLain Fire Brick Co., one at its Buckeye mine and the other at its Colonial mine. Both mines are in the fireclay underlying the Lower Kittanning coal. Both mines have been in operation for a number of years [ ] and have required expensive maintenance work on return airways. It was decided that considerable savings could be effected by short-circuiting the air to the surface through small shafts. It was also realized that these holes, located near the present workings, would be of added value as emergency escapeways. Originally, 48-in. diam. shafts were considered, but actual computations showed 36-in. diam. shafts were more than ample at both mines. The shaft at the Buckeye mine is 240 ft deep, and that at the Colonial mine 258 ft deep. Both holes were started in the lower part of the Conemaugh formation and penetrated Conemaugh and Allegheny strata. The holes were started through the unconsolidated materials overlying bedrock by constructing a concrete collar with a wall thickness of 8 in. Then the shafts were drilled by the shot-core drill method. An annular groove was cut in the rock by the abrading action of chilled steel shot run under the shoe of the core barrel. The drilling was done in stages, the core barrel drilling the groove for a certain distance depending on conditions encountered, and then the cores broken off and taken out in sections. The core barrel had a 36-in. o.d. and the finished diameter of the shaft measured almost 37 in. The major questions that could not be answered until the completion of the first shaft were, (I) how much ground water would be encountered, how would it hinder the drilling, and how difficult would it be to seal off, and, (2) how would the walls of the hole stand up. The holes of course could be cased or lined, but that is considerable added expense in any shaft.

The iron-ore deposits worked by this Company occur in lenses 200 to 1000 feet long and 5 to 80 feet wide, and stand at an angle of from 65' to 75, with a vertical height of 250 to 500 feet, other lenses occurring below. A number of the deposits were first worked as open pits, which in some cases were carried to the depth of 150 feet, when, owing to the weakness of the walls, underground mining was adopted. While the ore was being removed from the open pit, shafts mere in several instances sunk into the foot-wall, the intention being to mine the ore with breast-stopes of an approximate height of 20 feet, followed by underhand-stopes of the same height, leaving floors between of the necessary thickness to support the walls, or to effect the removal of the ore by means of what is known as the stall system. As the work progressed, however, it was found that the walls (which are of chlorite) were too weak to permit the working of breast-stopes 20 feet high, there being frequent heavy falls of ground from the hanging and, in some instances, from the foot. The plan of following breast-stopes with underhand-stopes was, therefore, abandoned. By working breast-stopes only, but little more than one-half of the ore could be removed, and that only at an excessive cost, the ore being so hard that power-drills with 3 1/8-inch pistons . and 6-inch stroke, working under 60 pounds of compressed air, are able to drill but 8 feet in ten hours as a yearly average, while from 6 inches to 2 feet is a common result of ten hours' drilling. It was plain that some other system of mining must be adopted, and it was proposed to sink by levels of 75 feet, carrying in the cross-cuts from the shafts and working out the ore each way from the shaft from foot to hanging, and from 15 to 20 feet in height. To extend our knowledge of the flotation behavior of sulphide minerals, the response of the following minerals to ethyl xanthate as collector was studied by captive bubble and cylinder flotation tests: antimonite (Sb2S3), arsenopyrite (FeAsS), covellite (CuS), rnarcasite (FeS2), orpiment (As&.), pyrrhotite (FeS) and tetrahedrite (4CU2S, Sb2S3). Lollingite (FeAs2) was also exarnined to determine if its behavior could be correlated with that of pyrite or rnarcasite (FeS2. Experimental Method Mineral for Flolation and Contact Tests Mineral was prepared in the manner a1ready described1 and its behavior both freshly ground and "oxidized" was studied. Tests in which the mineral was allowed to oxidize for various periods showed that a uniform response to xanthate was reached in two days or less. Oxidation Products The soluble oxidation products from most of the above minerals were measured and their effect on the flotation of the mineral studied. The mineral samples were wet ground to minus-52 mesh and deslimed, and 20 g of this material placed in 200 ml of distilled water of a measured pH value, and CO2-free air bubbled through each suspension at a constant rate (about I bubble/sec) for 5 days. It has been shown1 that the size of the mineral is unimportant in the rate of formation , oxidation products and that probably the supply of oxygen to the mineral is the rate-determining step. At the end of 5 days the pH value of the 'supernatant liquid was measured again, the mineral filtered off and the soluble products determined. Methods for estimation of sulphur acids, ferrous and ferric iron and copper have already been described.l No satisfactory method was found for antimony. Arsenic was estimated as the arsenate.2 Flotation of "Unoxidized" Minerals with Ethyl Xanthate as Collector Fig I to 3, 4. 6, show the effect of alkali and cyanide as depressants for the minerals with 25 mg potassium ethyl xanthate per liter as collector at 35°C. Wark and Cox8 have shown that with ethyl xanthate as collector, galena, pyrite and chalcopyrite show a greater tolerance to cyanide and hydroxyl ions at room temperature than at 35°C Covellite (Fig I), marcasite (Fig 2) and pyrrhotite (Fig 3) behave similarly. WHEN, after years of troublous experiences in roasting sulfide ores with heavy dust and fume losses resulting from the equipment and methods first available, there appeared on the, scene of metallurgy that revolutionary process known as sintering, it was felt that at last there had been found the ideal method for preparing sulfide ores for blast-furnace reduction. Not only were the sulfides roasted but also the fine oxidized ores were bound together with them in strong porous cellular masses which were in the best possible condition for reduction. With the experiences gained in the manipulation of the Huntington-Heberlein, Carmichael-Bradford, and Dwight & Lloyd processes there developed a refinement of detail which brought the whole plan of roasting by sintering to a high plane of perfection. But that metallurgy is never stationary is revealed by the fact that changes in milling practice, particularly the development of flotation, have introduced a new set of problems in sintering itself. Inasmuch as it is felt that these problems have not yet been solved in an entirely satisfactory manner this paper is written to record the present practice of the Salt Lake Valley smelters with the hope that there will be brought forth such discussion as may perhaps lead to still better practice. By far the greater proportion of the sulfides smelted today are flotation concentrates. Usually they are high grade, sometimes as high as 70 per cent. and more in lead. They are extremely fine, many mills grinding the ore so that from 60 to 80 per cent. will pass through screens of 200 mesh. The physical condition in which many of these concentrates reach the smelters is disconcerting to the metallurgists. Some are of about the consistency of putty. Others are of a sticky, slimy nature. Others again, dried to the limit, are veritable powders. Thin sheet copper in wide widths and long lengths is being made electrolytically on a commercial scale at the Raritan Copper Works, Perth Amboy, N. J. This achievement is the result of three years of intensive development preceded by almost ten years of intermittent research. While the idea of producing sheet copper by the electrolytic process is old, the literature on the subject is limited. It is evident, however, that the idea has been attractive to many investigators for years, if the issued patents in the field may be taken as an indication. These patents may be divided into three groups. In one group metal is deposited on some form of endless cathode, of which a revolving cylinder or drum is the most common. The cathode moves slowly and at such a rate that metal of the desired thickness is deposited during one pass through the electrolyte. The deposited metal is stripped off the cathode at a point above the solution level and, after washing and drying, is wound up immediately. In the next group of patents a band of thin metal is increased in thickness by being guided through an electrolytic tank in opposition to suitable anodes. The third group covers means of producing sheets of definite dimensions where flat plates or revolving cylinders are used as cathodes. With such cathodes, sheets of definite dimensions are built up to the desired thickness and then stripped off. The process as worked out at the Raritan Copper Works combines the methods of the first two groups. In the first stage a sheet weighing 1 oz. to the square foot is produced on a revolving cylinder. This sheet is increased to any desired thickness in the second stage. In the first stage (Fig. 1) a lead-covered copper drum is mounted horizontally on a lead-lined concrete tank so that it. is partly immersed in the electrolyte. The cylindrical surface of the drum immersed in the electrolyte is opposed by lead anodes spaced about 36 in. from it. The electrolyte, made up of appropriate quantities of copper and sulfuric acid, flows into and out of the tank continuously. The ebullition of gas at the surface of the anodes induces a vigorous circulation of electrolyte between the anodes and the drum surface, which is augmented by means of compressed air introduced through a pipe between the ends of the anodes under the center of the drum, not indicated on the diagram. All strata not yielding oil or gas in commereial quantities or a corresponding amount of water may be called dry in a wide sense. In petroleum geology, however, we may exclude all sands of too low or fine porosity to yield gaseous or fluid contents to the hole drilled in the sand before any original pressure that its contents may be under is disturbed. Most rocks are of this class and they are not reservoirs in our definition; their "dryness" is wholly a matter of course. What are the contents of the pores or what is the exact porosity of such rocks is of almost no concern to us, for economically they are "dry." What does interest us is the content of a rock having sufficient porosity and the pores of sufficient size to yield oil or gas in commercial quantities, if they were present under original pressure. Dryness of these reservoirs is a matter of supreme practical importance. Three views current as to such dryness seem, to me, to apply in a few cases only. It is the purpose of this paper to give reasons for this position and for believing that, in ordinary sedimentary rocks, there is only rarely a reservoir of competent porosity and undisturbed pressure that is dry in the sense of not yielding water, oil, or gas when first penetrated. 1. Gardnerl writes of some Kentucky sands, "There has never been present any salt water or other water in the sand." Absence of water cannot demonstrate this position. It is necessary to show that the rocks were not laid down in water, but in air, and that they became so enclosed, while still above the water-table of the ground water, that water has not been able to enter since. Most of these sands, and certainly the productive limestones, were deposited in water; and such sands as have been commercially productive show no reason for believing that the overlying shale or limestone was not laid down progressively from one direction and in water that would have flooded it. NO adequate explanation has been offered for this hypothesis, which is so inherently improbable. 2, Reeves2 urges that "sands originally water filled may have been drained of their water and not filled when later covered." Asarco's Sacaton unit, located near Casa Grande 45 miles southeast of Phoenix, Arizona, was brought into production in February 1974. Ore reserves are estimated at about 48 million tons at 0. 95% copper. Mineralization of the orebody comprises both sulfides and oxides, with minor amounts of gold and silver. Preproduction stripping of 40 million tons of overburden was accomplished in less than two years. Mining is done at the rate of 9,000 stpd ore with a waste-to-ore ratio of 4.6 to 1. 0. The mine is developed on 40 ft benches, and by 1979 underground block caving methods will be phased into the operation at a depth of 1900 ft. Ore is mined in the pit two shifts per day, seven days per week, and is hauled with 85 ton trucks to the primary crushing plant. Trucks dump their loads into a 165 st capacity pocket equipped with a chain curtain which controls the ore flow to the 6 ft 6 in. wide by 24 ft long (2. 0 m by 7.3 m) vibrating feeder grizzly. Grizzly bars are inclined at a 5º slope on the first half of the 0 feeder and 10 on the last half. Grizzly bars have 6 in. (13 mm) spacings which pass 60 to 70% of the mine-run ore. Grizzly oversize drops into a 48 in. by 60 in. (1. 22 m by 1.52 m) primary jaw crusher. Both the grizzly undersize and crusher discharge are collected on a 42 in. (1.07 m) conveyor belt operating 398 fpm (121 mpm) for transport to the 4,750 live st intermediate storage area ahead of the fine crushing plant. Capacity of the Sacaton primary crushing plant is a nominal 1150 stph (1043 mtph). It operates fourteen shifts per week with an effective crushing time of four hours per shift. An economical open-air design was used, but an enclosed operator control room is located on the upper level where the dump truck, feeder, and crusher can be observed. Oversize rocks are removed from the feeder or crusher by the 10-ton bridge crane. Direct operating costs for this well-designed primary crushing plant, including labor, power, supplies, and maintenance, are only 3.5 cents per short ton. An interesting feature of the Sacaton orebody is that the non-sulfide copper minerals, which are less prevalent than the sulfides, occur intimately with the sulfide minerals; for this reason, all ores as mined are treated in a flotation circuit using sulfidizing methods for oxide recovery.

PRESIDENT LITTLEJOHN: Is there any member that has any question to ask Mr. McCleary on the subject? MR. TESCHER: What do you figure it costs to do this? MR. McCLEARY: Between one and a half and one and three-quarters cents per kilowatt hour. MR. TESCHER: That includes all charges? MR. McCLEARY: All charges, fuel and labor. PRESIDENT LITTLEJOHN: Mr. McCleary, you were talking about a ten-inch top on the cars. Don't you find there is considerable spillage when raising or lowering the cars? MR. McCLEARY : Not after the men get accustomed to loading cars properly; at first, they just loaded it on in any old way, but wall it onto the cars solidly after a few days at the mine. I do not think we have that condition now. PRESIDENT LITTLEJOHN: Did I understand from the paper there that the rock dust you are using contains 90 per cent silica? MR. McCLEARY: Twenty; less than twenty. PRESIDENT LITTLEJOHN: I got that figure wrong. Are there any other questions to ask? MR. SCHLOSS: I would like to know what kind of machinery Mr. McCleary is using for rock dusting and are they rock dusting the rooms, or not? MR. McCLEARY: We have only recently started rock dusting, and the machine that we are using is Mr. Tescher's machine. We start in at the face of the main entry and move against the air current rock dusting every room and the entry every 50 feet. Every 50 feet, we stop the machine fifteen or twenty minutes at that point and rock dust up in the room and around the entry at that point. PRESIDENT LITTLEJOHN: Do you do any water sprinkling at the faces-at the working face? MR. McCLEARY: Yes, sir, every working face is sprinkled every day, and at least every two days at all points in the mine. PRESIDENT LITTLEJOHN: Does it affect the rock dust in any way? MR. McCLEARY: That was true before we started rock dusting. The faces only are sprinkled now. PRESIDENT LITTLEJOHN: Where you stop to sprinkle with water, you do not figure on rock dusting? MR. McCLEARY: I will just change that around. Where we do rock dusting, we do not expect to sprinkle. Where the faces of the coal are fresh, from day to day, that is where the sprinkling will be clone. "Collector and frother are commonly used to induce the floatability of valuable minerals in flotation plants. These reagents are usually distributed down a flotation bank or sometimes added in a single location at the top of the bank. A review of the literature and some experimental results obtained from laboratory and full scale trials indicate that the way flotation reagents are distributed down a flotation bank may influence the flotation response of coarse particles. The paper summarizes these observations which show that the distribution of reagents is a potential tuning variable for process optimization.IntroductionFlotation is in many cases the only way to concentrate sulphide and some oxide minerals. Flotation is a concentration process that uses particle surface composition to induce the selectivity by mean of hydrophobic reagents. The influence of particle size on flotation was firstly analyzed in the 50's1·2 and intensively investigated in the 70's, early 80's and 90's3-18. Most of the observed results show the existence of an optimum flotation size range9 whose recovery is not significantly influenced by a reduction of collector dosage""18. This result brought the idea of using a small portion of the total collector dosage at the top of a rougher bank and to distribute the remaining through the end of the bank to ensure sufficient collection of the coarse particles that need more hydrophobic coverage to attach to air bubbles and be lifted to the surface.This paper discusses the idea of using the distribution of reagents down a flotation bank to tune the operation of the process. Unlike the literature on the effect of reagents (collectors, frother...) dosage that is dense, little attention has been put on the distribution of reagents in a flotation bank. Although research on this subject has not been pushed very far, some operators have recognized the potential of a strategic addition of reagents down a flotation bank19. Except for a few exceptions, the proportions of the reagents to be distributed down a flotation bank are decided according to operator's experience instead of process analysis in relationships with particle size. This paper recalls observations made by different researchers that lead to the idea of using the distribution of reagents as a tuning variable for the flotation process. The paper does not present a detailed analysis or optimization scheme for tuning the distribution of reagents, but analyzes some plant and laboratory results with a view toward the development of a testing methodology and ultimately a validation or rejection of the idea."

THIS symposium is designed to lay the basis for a general discussion of the place of geophysics in the training of geologists. As there is danger that in the ensuing debate individual interests may be given emphasis out of proportion to their place, we shall do well to view the whole field of geological inquiry in order to see the problem in true perspective. THE NATURE OF GEOLOGICAL INQUIRY "Basic" and "Complex" Sciences It is convenient to divide all science into two major divisions, the basic and the complex sciences. The basic sciences separate out from reality such entities as "substances" and "movements," describe their behavior in terms of arbitrary units of measurement and derive from them by progressive abstractions concepts and patterns of behavior that exist between them, so-called general "laws" and "properties" of nature. The complex sciences, on the other hand, deal, with little or no abstraction, with those objects of reality that are accessible to man in the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, the lithosphere and the biosphere.† Their work comprises two types of inquiry. One is concerned with abstractions to the extent of dealing with types rather than individuals-that is, with such things as plants, animals, protoplasm; clouds, streams, glaciers; volcanoes and mountain ranges. It comprises the search for general properties and patterns of behavior or "laws" that characterize the objects and their reactions to each other. These properties and laws apply always, everywhere. They are independent of the stream of time. We may call the results of this sort of inquiry timeless knowledge. The other type of inquiry is concerned with the objects themselves-that is, with this animal and that plant; this river system and that mountain chain; this glacier and that valley. Like all concrete objects in nature, they are subject to change with the passage of time, especially when it is measured in years, centuries, eons. The characteristics by which we recognize them -indeed, their very existence are dependent on their position at this point in the stream of time. This we may call time-bound knowledge. The so-called descriptive sciences are all bound to the past of which the objects of their study are the product and through which alone their present properties can be understood. They are historical sciences. This obvious fact is easily overlooked, which leads to serious misunderstanding, as we shall see later. Dynamic Geology With this broad picture in mind, let us now examine the nature of geological inquiry, defining, for the purposes of this discussion, geology as the science of rocks.
