The Arlanda Link project is for the time being the most interesting project in Sweden, concerning rock and blasting technology. The total amount of rock excavated beneath Arlanda airport comprises 800 000 m³ divided in four parallel tunnels measuring a total length of 8,5 km, with a rock covering of only 5-15 m between the tunnel roof and existing terminal buildings.

Effective removal of ink particles by froth flotation is of up-most importance in paper recycling. In this study, the potential use of talc particles as carriers of difficult-to-float fine ink particles is investigated. In order to accomplish ink particles removal, the interactions between talc and oily- ink particles in aqueous solutions containing flotation chemicals was studied by zeta potential distribution measurements and with the impinging jet apparatus. The chemical conditions under which talc-ink adhesion occurs are identified and reported.

A system for a continuous determination of the charge volume of grinding media in ball mills and SAG mills has been developed. The system, comprised of a unique measurement device and a model based Kalman filter algorithm, determines grinding media level within a mill and calculates media and liner wear rates. The signal from an instrumented washer mounted on the exterior of the mill shell is used to provide the measurement that, along with mill power and on-line models for media mechanics, result in estimates of mill parameters that can be used in media addition control strategies. Data are presented for a 12.5 x 15 ft. ball mill.

The Institute is represented on the boards of the John Fritz Medal, the Hoover Medal and the Washington Award, in connection with the three national societies of Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering; and, also, in the case of the Washington Award, with the Western Society of Engineers. The Institute is represented with these four societies on the committee in charge of the Alfred Noble Prize.

Computer use in mine planning has evolved from theory to practical application at the Bingham mine of Kennecott Copper Corp.’s Utah Copper Division. Traditional mine planning methods have been combined with computer technology to produce a more realistic calculation of ore reserves and mining plans. The techniques used are not revolutionary but are an expansion of previous mine planning methods using the calculating power of the computer. These methods can readily be adapted for planning use by practical mining men.

A previous paper (1) indicated that electrowinning of copper at current densities considerably higher than those currently employed in electrowinning operations is technically feasible. It is of interest, therefore, to establish the extent of economic benefits which may be obtained from high current density operation and to determine the value of the optimum current density. Optimization of electrorefining processes has been discussed in considerable detail by Ibl (2) and Schmidt (3) whop from theoretical considerations, derived expressions for the optimum current density. In this work, general equations relating both the capital investment and the production cost for copper electrowinning plants to current density and plant capacity are established. From these equations, the optimum current density can be calculated for any desired plant capacity.

United Taconite is an iron ore mine operated by Cleveland-Cliffs Inc (Cliffs) located near Eveleth, Minnesota. The mine, originally known as Eveleth Taconite Mines, was purchased in December 2003 by Cliffs (70%) and Laiwu Steel (30%). The mine site, known as the Thunderbird Mine, produces taconite ore for delivery by rail to the company’s Fairlane plant, located approximately 10 miles to the south near Forbes, Minnesota. At the plant, the crude ore is ground, concentrated and processed into pellets for steel industry customers. Total pellet production capacity is about 5.4 million long tons (Ltons) per year.

The current underground infrastructure of an old monumental salt mine along with using it as a tourist, museum, nature, resort, conference and cultural events place is presented in the paper. At present, mainly in the monumental part of mine, only a small part of the historical chambers, which together with galleries form a tourist route available to visitors. Moreover, the essential activities aimed to make the tourist route more attractive and to change the decor of the underground sites are discussed.

A special committee on the Classification of Surface Mining Methods was appointed by the A.I.M.E. Board of Directors on Nov. 17, 1939. The committee was headed by Gerald Sherman, and the members were Chester A. Fulton, C. F. Jackson, Earl E. Hunner and Arthur Notman. A method is proposed for the preliminary design of coal mine openings and pillars using existing design formulas. The suggested method incorporates geophysical and core logging techniques, as well as the structural properties of the rock. Some of the existing design equations have been simplified and are included. Geology has become increasingly quantitative in the last 20 years. This trend has been accelerated by computer capability in the manipulation of data. The mining industry has been relatively slow to harness computer power, but the larger companies have moved in this direction in the past few years. Among the leaders in this progression is the White Pine Copper Co., and the following is a brief description of their computer system for processing, managing, and utilizing geologic data. Geology The White Pine mine is in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, 6 miles south of Lake Superior and 80 miles west of the Houghton-Hancock area, center of the famous Copper country. The ore body of chalcocite, native copper, and minor native silver, is a tabular body in the basal 25 ft of the flat lying Nonsuch Shale and the top part of the underlying Copper Harbor Conglomerate. A mathematical model of a shaking table is being developed, for inclusion in a package for the simulation of gravity concentration. The general form of the modules and how they fit into the package is briefly described. The separation on a shaking table is controlled by a number of operating variables and the importance of these variables in the model development is discussed. The influence of wash water, feed pulp density, deck slope, deck amplitude and mass feed rate are reported. The form of the model is described being based on the probability of a particle of defined size and density reporting to a specific discharge site. The mathematical relationships which relate size and density distributions to variations in the operating parameters are presented. The use of these functions in the prediction of the performance of a shaking table is outlined.

The distribution of metallurgical grade bauxite deposits will be discussed with the aid of a comprehensive table and a reference map. Author has exhaustively researched into soft ground through construction of a large open caisson on soft ground (muck) which weighs more than 4, 000 tons. To avoid any contingency during construction, we precompressed muck stratum with a sand cushion and consolidated it with sand piles before construction of the caisson. We made borehole surveyings and soil tests many times before and after ground treatment. Following the tracks of changes of the caisson at all stages of precasting, we surveyed a large number of data. On the basis of analysis of the data we changed the original construction plan of precasting in four stages and sinking in three stages into that of precasting in three stages and sinking in one stage. Through the practice of the whole caisson construction the author has advanced new theory of kinematic law for soil particles and the change&apos;s law for strength of muck during precompression of sand cushion and consolidation of sand piles.
