SEVERAL years ago my firm was representing the Mt. Lyell Co. of Australia, which was shipping its blister copper to a refining works in the United States. After the contract had been running for many months, the superintendent of these works discovered that if water was poured upon the surface of the bars much of it would disappear into the interior through blow holes. -Some experiments made by him showed that this could be a considerable amount, so that copper which had been rained on before it was weighed, although the surface appeared dry, nevertheless would contain water. It had frequently occurred in our experience-as samp-lers that the drillings from a lot taken by boring would come out quite wet, and in some cases, indeed, water would drip into the sample pan placed below the bars, due to the fact that the drill had penetrated a cavity or cavities containing water, which presumably got into the cavities at the time the copper was water-cooled after casting, there being, perhaps, no outlet to the surface. So far as I know, until this discovery at the refining works, no. one had thought that rain could penetrate into the interior of blister copper; at least in any quantity sufficient to be considered.

"There are several ways to condition lead-based alloy anodes for zinc electrowinning: electrochemical treatment, chemical treatment and physical treatment. Two advantages of physical treatments are their productivity and variety. In this report, physical treatments, including blasting with silica, alumina, steel grit and cut zinc wire, were tested. The laboratory tests confirmed there were differences in the formation of anode scales during electrowinning and in the suppression of lead dissolution from the anodes. With an increase in the surface roughness, the misfit between the PbC""2 and the MnC>2 was mitigated and the anchor effect was promoted; these effects resulted in dense Mn oxide scales on the anode.IntroductionZinc is widely used for hot-dip zinc plating and for die casting alloys. As a supplier of materials, we have endeavored to produce zinc that is economical and contains as little impurity as possible. As a result of our efforts, a technology for consistently providing special high-grade (SHG) zinc has been established. However, as seen in the issuance of the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive, public awareness of the industrial impact of heavy metals on the environment has been heightened. Increasing efforts to control environmentally sensitive substances will be necessary for our production processes.Electrolytic SHG zinc is produced by electrodeposition in an acidic solution with a Pb-Ag or Pb-Ag-Ca alloy for the anode and an Al alloy for the cathode. Pb alloy anodes are widely used because of their excellent durability; however, they are a source of Pb, which is the main impurity of the product."

Compression and tension load testing were performed on bored concrete piles installed to depths of 18 to 34 meters below excavation levels for a large mixed-use development in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The 900 mm diameter piles were installed in weathered graphitic schist bedrock. Load testing confirmed the side shear and end bearing capacities of the piles. The work formed part of the investigations for the 56,000 m2 site which includes a 79-story office tower, hotel tower, apartment tower, retail complex, and plaza area underlain by 4 to 6 basement levels. The paper provides the results of the site investigations, pile-load testing procedures, pile-load settlement behavior, and shaft load distribution.

An equation is derived describing fragment size for single fracture of brittle solids. It contains the equations of earlier workers as special or approximate cases and, in addition, is capable of describing coarse distributions in which a few large particles are produced on fracture. The equation can be fitted well to single fracture experiments where over-breakage is avoided. In 1956 Broadbent and callcottl described a method of analyzing the unit operation of grinding, applicable to homogeneous breakage of brittle materials. In essence, the grinding process was split into two parts: 1) the fractional amount of a given size which is selected for grinding per unit time, 2) the size-weight distribution of the fragments produced by breakage of this certain size (primary breakage distribution function). The theory was formulated using matrix algebra. They attempted an experimental verification of the theory using an assumed primary breakage distribution but the results were not very satisfactory. Austin and Gardner2 showed that this assumed distribution was widely different from experimental values and that it led to the poor agreement of predicted size-weight distributions with experiment found by Broadbent and Callcott. In addition, Austin and Gardner2,3,4 reformulated the original approach in terms of differential equations of grinding and demonstrated that the approach led to a very satisfactory description of the grinding process, providing that the descriptive parameters were measured experimentally. (communication to the Secretary*).-When asked to discuss Mr. Feild's paper, I felt most highly complimented to have the privilege of commenting on such a worthy and needed piece of apparatus. In consideration of the importance of the viscosity of blast-furnace slags and the relation existing between the' melting point of a slag and its viscosity, the introduction of this apparatus should be a welcome means or assistant in the study of the physical properties of a slag. Up to the present time, it is A fact that this side of the practical working of the blast furnace has been sadly neglected by those investigating slags. It is easily seen that the fluidity of a slag is of as great importance as its melting point. It is not necessarily true that a slag having a low melting point will have a correspondingly low viscosity or be highly fluid. For example, a slag having a melting point of 1,100° C. may have to be superheated to, say,1,300° C., in order to have as high a fluidity as another slag whose melting point is, say, 1,250° C. The latter in this case would be the more economical. This point has been brought out very nicely by Mr. Feild. Before discussing this paper further, I think it will be well to outline some of the points, a discussion of which may be in order:

On 20 December 1983 at 8.40am blast- hole 57 of Blast RN177 prematurely detonated follwed by a violent deflagration of blast- hole 59 at 10.40am. The blastholes were 380mm diameter drilled in black pyritic Mt McRae shale. The blastholes were loaded with ANFO and primed. Blasthole 57 was stemmed and blasthole 59 was not. A poss- ible mechanism which could lead to such a detonation is described. preliminary tests showed the top 5m of a bench had the highest temperature which could not be influenced by a range of treat -ments. Small scale laboratory tests show- ed that zinc oxide (ZnO) and magnesium carbonate (Mg2CO3) inhibited the reaction. A series of tests using AN with and without inhibitors loaded into the collars of blast -holes drilled in the top 6m of the bench and unstemmed is described. An analysis of the time to reaction of the holes loaded with AN against temperature shows that the decomposition of the AN in contact with the black pyritic shale is probably a sulphuric acid catalysed react- ion. All the inhibitors tested can neut- ralise the sulphuric acid in the shale. 10% ZnO appears to be an effective inhibitor of the reaction providing the AN/ZnO (90/10) is kept out of contact with surface material whose temperature can be as high as 60¦C in summer. It is concluded that ANFO/ZnO (90/ 10) should be now tested in stemmed holes.

Numerous agencies in the Executive Branch of the United States Federal Government have regulatory jurisdiction over the explosives industry. These agencies develop the rules by which the explosives industry must operate, and many have the authority to enforce those rules. Likewise, there are entities in the Legislature that have oversight of those agencies and develop the laws that agencies must operate under. These entities in the Legislative Branch are Congressional Committees. Each committee has their respective jurisdictional authority over various agencies and issues. There are several Congressional Committees with jurisdiction over the agencies that govern the explosives industry and they differ slightly between the House of Representatives and the Senate. This paper discusses this division of power as it relates to the explosives industry. Each branch is responsive to the public and the processes through which each promulgates regulation and legislation require public input in different forms. Options for civic involvement for engaging each of these bodies of power in their respective processes are presented. The differences between legislation and regulation are highlighted along with the processes by which each are promulgated. A proper understanding of the governmental mechanics that affect the explosives industry are critical for the industry to be able to be proactive in playing a role in these processes in a democratic way.

At Elkol, Wyo., about 80 miles northeast of Ogden, Utah, the Kemmerer Coal Co. and the Utah Power and Light Co. are involved in a joint venture that will soon see 1 million tons of coal going "out by wire" to Ogden. Kemmerer, owner of a multi-seam strip mine, and the utility, now building a steam power plant adjacent to the mine site, expect to begin initial power generation by February 1963. Although capable of producing only 150,000 kw at that time, this plant is expected to be ultimately enlarged to 500,000-kw capacity which will require about 2 million tons of coal annually. The deposit consists of more than 30 seams of coal, usually varying in thickness from 2 to 40 ft, and separated by beds of sandstones and shales. In certain areas the aggregate thickness of all the coal seams measures 300 ft. The thickest and most spectacular of these seams is the lowest one, referred to as the No. 1 seam, which is 118 ft thick in some places.

Tunnel Boring Machine Instrumentation A 9.17 m. diameter tunnel boring machine presently in operation in Chicago, Illinois, has been instrumented to continuously monitor and record machine thrust, torque and penetration rate during boring. A micro-processor-based data logger capable of monitoring up to 60 channels of data digitizes and converts into appropriate engineering units the signals from various transducers mounted on the machine. The output from the data logger is sent to a teleprinter, providing a permanent record of measured data. The program control enables the data logger to scan all data channels at desired time intervals. Data obtained to date have been analyzed to determine the interrelationships of the parameters measured. Penetration rate was found to increase linearly with machine thrust with a unit increase in thrust causing more than a unit increase in penetration rate. For low thrust levels corresponding to the initial stages of a boring cycle, the penetration rate was observed to behave erratically until the thrust pressure was sufficiently high for the cutters to establish full contact with the tunnel face. Torque showed a curvilinear increase with machine thrust, reaching the design rating at about 70% of maximum available thrust. No-load torque was approximately 20% of the machine's rated torque capacity. Overall, the trends observed in measured machine parameters correlated closely with those predicted from experimental and theoretical boreability studies. In summary, the instrumentation system has mett two basic goals. First, it provided extensive and accurate boring data and secondly, it has proven that an automatic data acquisition system can be installed on a TBM and can function under adverse environment.

INTRODUCTION With the world media full of predictions that the price of gold will quadruple in three years (Maybury, R.J., 1988), and with financial forecasters and strategists touting opportunities to make 400% in gold (Skousen, M., 1988), explorationists and entrepreneurs are scurrying to find enough gold to feed the global gold fever created. At the same time, gold deposits in the United States and other developed and intermediate countries are becoming less attractive because of environmental restrictions, radical reductions in tax incentives, and depleting reserves, causing people in the mining industry to begin looking at opportunities for foreign investment in gold mining concessions in lesser developed countries (LDCs). Meanwhile, LDCs are responding with chamber-of-commerce aplomb in marketing their opportunities. In the face of all this frenzy and hype, targeting gold mining concessions in LDCs for foreign investment may be done more objectively by employing a systematic approach. For this paper the SHOP rating system (Corbin, R.K., 1987), which considers factors of the LDC's stability, hospitability, ore occurrence, and profitability potential is used. The result is that a tiny banana-growing republic in Central America, first discovered by Columbus and named the "Rich Coast'' because of the many gold adornments worn by its Indians, has been rediscovered and emerges as a classic LDC gold target.

Gravity retaining walls have been constructed using Deep and Shallow Soil Mixing (DSM and SSM) since 1991 in the United States. These walls, for both temporary and permanent uses, were constructed by mixing cement with in-situ soils over a volume containing 100% of the required gravity wall zone. Modern design techniques have reduced costs substantially by forming the required gravity wall section as a composite mass. Using ratios of 15-35% by volume, treatment f the ground forming the required gravity section has reduced the cost from about $40 to about $20 per square foot. Design, construction and actual performance of these gravity walls are presented.

The acidophilic and chemolithotrophic Thiobacillus ferrooxidans bacteria grown in the presence of soluble ferrous ions and solid substrates (sulfur, pyrite and chalcopyrite) as their energy source have been used in the investigations. The cell surfaces are characterised by zeta-potential, contact angle, FT-IR and FT-Raman studies. The adsorption isotherms of the cells on pyrite and chalcopyrite indicate that the adsorption begins on pyrite at a much lower equilibrium cell population than on chalcopyrite. The isotherms tend to level off at a cell adsorption density corresponding to a horizontal monolayer coverage when the geometrical dimensions of the cells are considered. In the presence of cells, the xanthate flotation of pyrite completely depressed, whereas chalcopyrite flotation is unaffected. The results suggest that chalcopyrite can be selectively floated from pyrite, also at a neutral pH region, in the presence of T. ferrooxidans cells.

CHROMIUM is one of the new metals, but considerable research has been required to determine an approximate record of its production from 1827 until the present. Its use in the form of pure metal is not extensive; of the chromite mined, about one-half is required for making ferrochromium, about two-fifths goes directly into refractories and the remainder is absorbed chiefly by the chemical trades. The industries that demand chromite for such uses are mainly in countries that produce little chromite, while the important chromite-producing countries are not generally consumers. The international flow of chromite is therefore of interest, as yell as the political and commercial control of resources of the metal.

In the Kokkola zinc smelter, as in most other zinc roasting plants, there is now a trend towards using concentrates with an increasing impurity content. This also often means that the size distribution of the concentrates gets finer. Iron is present in sulfidic zinc concentrates with the highest percentage as a single impurity. The behavior of iron in zinc roasting was studied in laboratory experiments. Commercial zinc concentrates with a low and high (1.5 - 16 wt-%) iron content as pyrite or in the sphalerite lattice were oxidized to various degrees to establish the reaction mechanisms of iron in roasting. Microscopy studies were carried out on the calcine, and the findings were presented in numerous photographs of the polished cross sections. SEM/EDS techniques were used for analyzing the phases and particle morphologies present in the samples. An oxidation mechanism of zinc concentrates with a high iron content was suggested.

INTRODUCTION Grinding control is currently the most publicized control subject in the minerals industry. Flotation control and crushing control have not as yet received the widespread attention that grinding control has. The primary reasons for this center around the high capital costs of grinding equipment and the fact that grinding mills are extremely energy inefficient. In a typical copper concentrator the energy requirements to produce refined copper are: (1) [Total Energy Distribution (Kw-hr/yr)% Mining4.93 x 10817.3 Mineral Processing9.63 x 10833.8 Smelting and Refining13.9 x 10848.9] One-third of the total energy used for copper production is for mineral processing. A breakdown of this energy into process steps yields the following: [Total Energy Distribution (Kw-hr/yr)% Crushing and Grinding 7.16 x 108 73.8 Flotation 0.76 x 108 7.8 Materials Handling1.78 x 10818.4] It is apparent that comminution operations consume the largest proportion of the energy for processing and as such become major targets for improvements in efficiency. Unfortunately, size reduction operations are extremely inefficient. Efficiency calculations for grinding range from less than 0.1% to about 5% depending on the evaluation criteria. Because of these facts, grinding control has been and will continue to be the focus of major process control efforts. OBJECTIVES AND BENEFITS All benefits achieved as the result of grinding control are derived from modifying physical parameters which improve the efficiency of the grinding mill. The grinding media materials for the mining industry require corrosion and abrasion resistance properties not only to minimize the wear but also to improve the flotation recoveries of sulfide minerals. The media wear mechanisms and the factors influencing the grinding ball wear during grinding are discussed with respect to abrasion, corrosion and impact wear of grinding media materials. Interactions between the grinding media and sulfide minerals in a ball mill adversely affect the floatabilities of the ground minerals. The possible galvanic interactions between grinding medium-mineral and their effects on the flotation responses of sulfides are also reviewed. The selection criteria for alloy composition that reduces the overall wear along with adverse effects on flotation are brought out.

To reduce safety and production problems, it is essential that the electrical operating characteristics of coal mining equipment and their electrical subsystems be clearly understood. The Bureau of Mines and the Pennsylvania State University have developed techniques to monitor and analyze several of the critical parameters. A unique system for measuring traction locomotive consumption at the machine has been assembled and utilized. Conclusions from 27 continuous miners show that voltage levels are directly tied to machine efficiency. The Bureau of Mines and Pennsylvania State University, along with West Virginia University, are currently monitoring and accessing mine power transients. Results exhibit that voltage transients of three to five times the line -to-line value are common on underground distribution systems.
