The Key Tuffite is a thick (0.3 m to 6 m) and laterally extensive (-10 km) cherty, sulfide-bearing tuff unit in Archean greenstones in the Matagami mining district in northwestern Quebec. It lies at the contact of the Watson Lake Group and overlying Wabassee Group volcanic rocks, and is host to major Zn-Cu volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits. The tuff component is highly altered and its volcanic precursors are not identifiable by petrographic means. The tuff is mixed with a volcanic exhalative component comprising chert, carbonate and sulfides (pyrite, pyrrhotite, and minor sphalerite and chalcopyrite). The normative mineral composition of the Key Tuffite is 33% quartz, 28% sulfides, 16% sericite, 8070 carbonate, 6% chlorite and 9% other minerals. In the vicinity of the Bell Allard and Orchan mines, the precursor tuff components are identified using immobile major and trace elements, as Watson Lake tholeiitic rhyolite (Zr/Y = 1.5 to 3.5, LaN/ybN = 1.7 to 2.8, SiO2 = 72.5 ± 1.2 wt %, and Wabassee calc-alkaline andesite (Zr/Y = 9, LaN/YbN= 4 to 8, SiO2 = 56% to 65%). Immobile element computation techniques were used to calculate mass additions and losses in the conversion of the tuff to the Key Tuffite. Average net amounts of FeP3 (27% total iron), Si02 (14%), Cao (8%), S and K2 (+ 2%), were added, Nap was removed (-2.8%), and MgO was over-all unchanged. Total net mass change was +63%, which comprises mainly exhalative additions, but also includes changes owing to hydrothermal alteration of the tuff component.

MANY of the magnesite ores of the western part of the United States contain such large amounts of silica and hydrous silicate minerals that the value of the ores is either low or nominal. Expensive and carefully controlled mining methods are necessary to prevent excessive dilution of the higher grade ores by introduction in mining' of small pieces of the hanging walls or footwalls of the deposit. This difficulty is further complicated by the various states of decomposition of the country rock of the deposits in which many of the ores occur. The problem the authors attempted to solve arose from a request to float an impure magnesite containing varying proportions of siliceous gangue with calcium carbonate. The ore is normally. enclosed in serpen-tine masses, somewhat decomposed, and in mining it wall rock is inci-dentally added, so that variable amounts of siliceous material occur in the samples. The silica, alumina, and iron oxide are so closely associated with the magnesium carbonate in the magnesite that ordinary mechanical separation at coarse mesh sizes is of no avail. It is well known that calcium carbonate can be floated by suitable reagents, therefore it seemed reasonable to suppose that magnesium carbonate minerals would behave in a similar manner, but experimental trial proved that this supposition was unfounded. Therefore the first step in the problem was to find out what differences of behavior there were between magnesium and calcium carbonates under flotation conditions, or when suspended in water. In water at 18° C. magnesium carbonate is slightly more soluble than calcium carbonate; in fact, MgCO3 is soluble to the extent of 0.0106 grams in 100 c.c. of water at 18° C. and CaCO3 to the extent of 0.0013 grams. However, magnesium carbonate in water gradually changes to the basic carbonates of a composition (3MgCO3.Mg(OH)23H20) or (4MgCO3.Mg(OH)25H20), depending upon conditions, and calcium carbonate to calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2, The relative solubilities of these hydroxides in water are the reverse of the solubilities of magnesium and calcium carbonates.. This paper describes the technology and methods deployed in the continuous autonomous remote monitoring of cracks in interior and exterior walls of a residence near a limestone quarry. The objective is to quantitatively compare crack response due to blast-induced ground motion to that induced by diurnal temperature changes, weather fronts, occupant activity, and other phenomena. The remote monitoring and communication technology developed to obtain and disseminate crack response data for this study may provide the means to mitigate the effect of public concerns about potential impacts of ground vibrations inherent in construction and production of raw materials; it is critical to address these concerns because subsequent litigation may result in delays and increased costs.

5. Development of Initial Probing System 5. 1 Introduction The preliminary evaluation of a variety of potential methods for initial probing showed that the optical system using closed circuit television (CCTV) and the sonar, or acoustic ranging, system were the most promising. The former is capable of pro¬viding a visual display of the mine passages in a clear, non-smoky environment, and the latter is capable of providing a map of the spatial location of the coal surfaces making up the entries, as well as objects, such as cribs, mining machines, etc., in the passages in both smoky and non-smoky environments. The sonar system used in conjunction with the CCTV in a clear environment can greatly assist in resolving the spatial distribution of objects seen on the TV screen. Further, in a smoky environment the interpretation of the sonar information could be facilitated if some visual information were also available. CCTV systems exist but require some modifications to suit this particular application. The Industrial Hazards and Communications Division of the Bureau has an ongoing program for the development of such a CCTV system. Rather than duplicate this effort in developing a CCTV system, it was decided to evaluate the possibility of utilizing their system for initial probing, while continuing with the develop¬ment of a system which would work in any environment, including the presence of dense smoke. The concept of using sonar for the initial probing of mine passages represents the application of new technology requiring development. The results of such a development effort undertaken during the course of this program are described in the following sections.

Sampling has evolved at two large underground limestone mines as conditions and product requirements have grown tougher over 100 years of mine life, requiring innovative techniques to insure delivery of high purity limestone. Sampling insures delivery of consistent product to customers at the lowest possible cost. Statistical considerations have evolved from simple data collection to predictive and process capability analysis. Sample methods include borehole samples, face (using a proprietary face-sampling device), and total plant feed automatic, process, and final product sampling. Lessons learned, while keeping costs at historically low numbers, include the importance of geological models, exploration drilling density, face sampling, and blending of ore.

THE present publication is a continuation of the work on gas analysis, described in a paper presented before the Institute of Metals Division a year ago.1 While that paper was largely descriptive in character, dealing with the various parts of the apparatus and method of operations, the present one gives numerical data obtained as a result of a series of experiments with iron-carbon alloys. The apparatus and the methods applied are essentially the same as previously described, changes being only in minor details. Attention should be called to the fact that in the present work we are dealing with the gaseous mixtures obtained as a result of vacuum melting of various ferrous alloys. It should be understood that when the terms "degasified sample" and "products of degasification" are used, they refer to the sample remaining after the vacuum fusion of the alloy and the gaseous products removed therefrom, respectively. The writer does not wish to create the impression that the metallic products of this process are absolutely free from any gaseous elements, nor that the gases obtained are present as such in the original sample. These two points are not yet definitely known and are subjects for future investigation. The point, however, which has been established beyond doubt, is that all the gases dealt with come from the metallic charge and are present either in the charge as such, or are produced as a result of chemical reactions going on within the charge. The suggestion that the gases are due to the reactions between the metallic charge and the refractory materials has no valid basis.

THE actual procedure in estimating depth of overburden from mag-netic observations made on the surface will vary with the form of the deposit and any theoretical discussion will apply only so far as the form of the deposit conforms to the mathematical premises on which the theory is based. Since the shapes of natural deposits in the field cannot be expressed rigorously in mathematical form, the best that can be done is to assume some simple form and deduce results. Fortunately many small variations in form produce only slight changes in the estimated depth of overburden, therefore the methods have a definite practical value. For the theoretical treatment, magnetic ore deposits may be divided roughly into three classes, depending upon whether the magnetic anom-alies may be considered to arise from (1) a single magnetic pole, (2) a dike or (3) a magnetic doublet. Particular cases, falling under one or other of these classes, have been discussed by different authors.1-4 In general, it may be stated that when the magnetic effects as measured on the surface are due only to one pole of the body, the other pole being so remote that its effect may be neglected, the resultant anomaly F at any point will vary as the inverse square of the distance r of the point from the pole, which may be expressed mathematically by F = k/r2, where k is a constant. When the deposit occurs in the form of a long, thin dike, the resultant anomaly will be of the form F = k'/r and when the deposit is in the shape of a lens, so that both poles have an appreciable effect on the surface, the result will be similar to that caused by a magnetic doublet, and the form will be F = k'/r3. The particular class under which a deposit falls may be deduced from the results of the magnetic survey. The second class is readily found, but there may be difficulty in deciding between the first and third. Isody-namic contours of both the vertical and horizontal anomalies will often be a good guide in making a correct decision.

DURING the early years of the present century a notable interest appeared in American industry in the matter of recovering and render-ing profitable byproducts of manufacturing operations. Among the byproducts of reduction of sulfide ores in many plants large amounts of sulfur dioxide gas were available. In certain instances the concentration of S02 in the gases evolved was, or could be made, sufficient to make them suitable for manufacturing sulfuric acid. At the Anaconda Reduction works such a condition existed. Large tonnages of copper concentrate were being roasted and the roaster gases were available and suitable as a source of sulfuric acid. Earlier work on a large scale at Martinez, Calif., and in the Ducktown region, Tennessee, had shown the feasibility of manufacturing sulfuric acid from the S02 contained in gases arising from the reduction of copper sulfide ores. In California and Tennessee the acid found a ready market in manufacture of fertilizers, while the situation regarding disposal of the sulfuric acid was quite different at Anaconda. No local use for acid existed, and a commodity of such low value could not stand freight charges to consuming centers. There was a very large accumulation of sand tailings from the gravity concentration mill below the plant at Anaconda. This material, made by the comparatively crude methods in use up to about 1915, contained about 13 lb. of copper per ton, largely as sulfide minerals. In 1912 serious research work toward recovery of this copper was instituted and after about two years of laboratory and pilot-plant development, a process for accomplishing it was perfected. This process involved roast-ing the sand tailings, leaching the roasted tailings with sulfuric acid, and throwing out the copper by passing the solutions over scrap iron. Under this plan each ton of sand required the introduction of about 70 lb. of 60° Be. sulfuric acid.

Most of the gold in the Late Archean Witwatersrand Basin is of detrital origin but, in its present form, it is metamorphosed. The only relict detrital features preserved are the morphological characteristics of some placer gold particles. Regional burial metamorphism in the shallower and deeper levels of the Witwatersrand Supergroup reached temperatures around 300°C and 350°C at pressures between 2 kbar and 3 kbar, respectively, estimated from phase relations, chlorite-chloritoid exchange thermometry and chlorite thermometry. Metamorphism of the gold involved compositional homogenization of individual gold particles and partial recrystallization. Various infJ.1tration events caused the partial mobilization of the gold at slightly lower temperatures, between 240°C and 300°C. These infiltrations can be related to crustal extension during the deposition of massive carbonate sequences of the Transvaal Supergroup (around 2.5 Ga), and later to the emplacement of the Bushveld Complex, and to the Vredefort event around 2.0 Ga ago. The mobility of the gold was dependent on the sulfur fugacity prevailing in a particular horizon which, in tum, was determined by the amount of pyrite (and other sulfides) present in that horizon. With the sulfur fugacity being controlled by stratigraphy, low fluid rock ratios in a pyrite-rich horizon were most conducive for the mobilization of the gold. Thus, long-range gold mobilization in the Witwatersrand Basin can be expected to be the exception rather than the rule.

Geophysical signatures of the Taranaki and Tongariro volcanoes reflect similarities in their age, composition and hydrothermal histories, but also reflect differences in host rock settings and edifice evolution. The Taranaki volcanoes have strong positive gravity anomalies showing that their edifices largely consist of dense andesite which reflects substantial lava production or dyke injection during construction and that large sub-edifice dykelstock complexes occur. In contrast, the Tongariro volcanoes have strong negative gravity anomalies indicating low density edifices of volcaniclastic material; no sub-edifice intrusions can be identified, probably because of the lack of density contrast with host basement rocks. Strong positive magnetic anomalies over the younger cones can mainly be attributed to near-surface andesite lavas or dykes whereas subdued magnetic effects are associated with hydrothermally altered zones within both edifices and sub-edifice intrusions.

South Bulli is the oldest and largest underground coal mine in Australia. Two longwall units are in operation and current production is 2.5 to 3 million tonnes of run of mine product per year with a workforce of 600. Prior to 1984 a workforce of around 1,200 produced 1.5 million tonnes. Advances in technology can. of course, account for some of this gain, but the changes made in the human resources area are also seen as playing a major role in South Bulli emerging as a reasonably stable operation.The human resources strategy adopted recognises the value of the workforce and is aimed at not only fostering cooperation as all levels, but also making employees aware of the direct contribution they can make to the success of the enterprise.

A premature explosion might be described as an explosion that, occurs before the miner expects it. Notwithstanding that it is unexpected, a premature is generally within the miner's control. A hangfire explosion is a blast that occurs after the miner expects it,, and in all instances, except where the explosives or blasting accessories are defective, hangfire explosions are within the miner's control. Causes of Premature Explosions Generally, there are seven methods of shot-firing in anthracit,e mines; namely: (1) cap and fuse with dynamite, (2) fuse with pellet powder, (3) squib with black powder or pellets, (4) exploders and delays with dynamite or black powder, (5) exploders with dynamite, (6) delay ignitors with black powder or pellets, (7) electric squibs with black powder or pellets. Cap and Fuse.—This method of firing seems to produce the greatest number of premature explosions. This is not solely because of the method, but is the result of mispractices which are possible with this method of firing. The two most common mispractices followed with cap-and-fuse blasting are the firing of multiple holes and the use of short fuse.. In the firing of multiple holes by cap and fuse, investigations have shown that in nearly every instance where the miner was injured by this method of firing he remained too long at the face lighting the several fuses, so that the first shot went off before he could reach a place of safety. Such accidents could have been avoided either by accurate judgment by the miner of the relative lengths of the fuses or by the use of electric firing. Rules exist in nearly every mine forbidding the lighting of more than one hole at a time where the cap-and-fuse method of firing is practiced. Where it is desirable to fire more than one hole at a, time, electric firing should be used. It is difficult to understand why so many premature explosions result from the use of short fuses, inasmuch as the cost of fuse is practically a negligible item in the expense of a day's work. Notwithstanding this, however, we frequently find miners using short lengths of fuse in an effort to save one or two cents per hole, or about 15 to 20 # in a day. A practice

Now that both the national and state legislatures are seeking ways of reducing expenses, the appropriations for geological investigation and for the study of mineral resources have been greatly reduced and in some cases entirely stopped. Is this policy justified? The sums saved by these reductions are always small. If the work accomplished by these surveys has no intrinsic value to the community, but is only an interesting way of spending some of the people's money when that money is plentiful, there should be no surveys at any time. If, on the other hand, they perform a necessary function, it is indeed foolish and short-sighted to save these paltry sums to the detriment of the community. It is not my purpose to undertake a general justification of geological surveys. Rather, 1 wish to call attention to the work of one state survey that has been discontinued, and to indicate ways in which the work was valuable to the people, even though that state's mineral resources are not very important, and why it should be continued. Though at one time in Connecticut's history iron mining and smelting were important, and copper was mined in appreciable quantities in two localities, it is many years since it could be regarded as a mining state. At present Connecticut stands far down among the states in the value of its mineral products. Granite for architectural and structural purposes, trap rock, clay, agricultural lime, feldspar and quartz, together with a few other nonmetallic minerals, are produced in appreciable quantities, but the natural resources of the state consist at present much more largely in its attractive scenery, woods, lakes, shore line, and in the opportunities that these offer for rest and recreation. Is the prosecution of geological work in such a state a waste of the taxpayer's money? Or can it be that though it was formerly valuable, the work is now completed? The only way to answer these questions is to review the geological work done in the past and to consider the type of information the people want, as reflected in the requests that have been received by the director of the survey in the last few years. Submarine tailings disposal is conceptually an attractive option for managing reactive mine wastes in coastal regions by virtue of reduced sulfide oxidation under a water cover and no infrastructure to maintain after mine closure. However, the lack of detailed knowledge of metal leaching, dispersal of fine tailings and biological impacts in the marine environment has led to no operating permits currently in effect in Canada. Detailed chemical and ecotoxicological assessments at two historic copper mine sites (Little Bay and Tilt Cove) in the north coast of Newfoundland with tailings disposed in an estuarine to shallow (=100 m) marine environment have demonstrated reduced reactivity of sulfidic tailings when submerged under water. Only non-acute toxicity is detected in biota inhabiting the immediate vicinity (A review of another historic shallow marine tailings operation in the southern tip of Vancouver Island (Jordon River) with a high-energy setting also reveals problems with unconfined tailings dispersal and temporal biological impacts. Documented studies at two deeper (140 - 360 m) marine tailings disposal operations at the northern tip of Vancouver Island (Island Copper) and northwestern coast of British Columbia (Kitsault) again illustrate imperfect predictions of tailings re-suspension and dispersal. At these sites, bioaccumulation of tailings-derived metals appears to be minimal. There is evidence of rapid re-colonisation of the tailings surface by benthos but of different species than the original population. Integrating these observations with reported metal fluxes and biological diversity associated with submarine hydrothermal vents, the risks and benefits of deep-sea (>1 km) tailings disposal are discussed. To determine if submarine tailings disposal in deep, confined basins on the seafloor is environmentally friendly, detailed multi-disciplinary research incorporating physical, chemical, biological and toxicological components will be indispensable.
