The Kaltails Project is situated close to the city of Kalgoorlie-Boulder in Western Australia. Located on the south-eastern fringe of the Golden Mile, Kaltails has been in operation since June 1989. The tailings forming the reserve for Kaltails have been derived from 100 years of underground mining on the Golden Mile, but, some of the re.;erve has been retreated in the past. A map of the tailings reserves and treatment plant site is presented as Figure 1. The gold project is a joint venture between Poseidon 90 per cent and Gold Corporation (ten per cent) and is managed by Poseidon Gold Kaltails.

Aggregate producers nationwide well recognize the numerous problems often faced in securing local approval to open and operate new gravel pits and rock quarries. Similar problems are faced in Colorado, but this region also presents certain political, social, and geological complexities that have become particularly troublesome in the last 10 years. The gravity of the local permitting dilemma can be related directly to the worsening supply-demand imbalance for aggregates in the state's most populated area, the Front Range urban corridor, particularly the Denver metropolitan area. The drive to develop crushed-rock reserves to supplement dwindling alluvial supplies and to meet increasing regional growth demands was somewhat predictable but perhaps more a "last resort" alternative forced onto producers by a hesitant and often apathetic government.

Ernest Henry mine (EHM) is an Iron oxide copper-gold sublevel cave mine located 30 minutes north of Cloncurry in North-West Queensland. The underground mine lies beneath open pit excavations, which were in operation from 1999 to 2011. Fault structures carry large quantities of water from the cover sequence aquifer into the underground mine area. The open cut excavations exacerbates vulnerability of the underground mine to the high intensity wet season storms of northern Queensland. These factors combine to make hydrogeological issues high priority for mine operation. Water-related risks include the cost of removing water from the mine, flooding risk and mud rush potential.Turnover of key technical staff in late 2015 at EHM resulted in the mine being left in an untenable position of losing the primary source of technical knowledge. Due to encouragement of cross-disciplinary activity coupled with workload and resource sharing, the management team were confident in utilising on-site personnel to offset loss of experienced personnel.Remaining geology personnel took additional responsibility for hydrogeological monitoring equipment and planning of upcoming work. Consultant input was limited to review only and an emphasis was placed on knowledge transfer to the geology team. Using this strategy, a 13 hole dewatering program was successfully implemented, achieving a significant water level drop in areas of elevated hydrological risk, whilst also upgrading the hydrological monitoring sensor array.Through a development program centred on cross-disciplinary exposure, the technical team was able to retain key technical knowledge despite staff turnover and produce strong results outside traditional training and roles. Increasing global demand for commodity metals and capital and the greater operating costs of mining and metal production present significant challenges for the metals mining industry. Current conventional technologies may not be feasible for processing deposits of declining grade, challenging mineralogy or those that occur at increasingly greater depths. To overcome these issues, the development of a step-change technology such as in situ recovery (ISR), which reduces mining and avoids milling costs, may be vital in ensuring future economic metal production. ISR has been used extensively to treat porous soft rock deposits such as the water-soluble salts, sylvite and halite. Although ISR has typically been used for mining conventionally uneconomic uranium ores, it has also been used less frequently for the treatment of other restricted permeability hard rock deposits, such as those containing copper and gold. The reason for the limited uptake of the technology for hard rock mineralisations is primarily due to low natural rock porosity and permeability and hence poor response to available lixiviant. However, additional challenges include solution containment, management of groundwater and regulatory, ecological and societal requirements and expectations. CSIRO has focused on understanding the challenges of hard rock ISR and identifying global capabilities that can contribute to developing the essential enabling technical areas required to realise ISR. Specific focus areas include geochemistry and advanced resource characterisation; drilling and controlled rock-breaking technologies; solution chemistry and environmentally benign lixiviant systems; lixiviant delivery systems and ‘subsurface mixing’; subsurface hydrology and reactive transport mechanisms and models; downstream processing options; legal, social and environmental aspects; and techno-economic modelling. This paper will discuss ISR challenges including industry feedback focused on addressing this issue, gaps preventing ISR from being applied in practice, capabilities to overcome these gaps and the development of a collaborative approach to making hard rock ISR a reality.CITATION:Kuhar, L L, Breuer, P, Robinson, D J and McFarlane, A, 2015. Extraction of zinc from chloride solution with dibutyl butylphosphonate (DBBP) in Escaid 110 has been investigated. The distribution coefficient of zinc was found to be independent of equilibrium pH. This independence indicates that the mechanism of the extraction may be solvation. Slope analysis for the system of dilute zinc chloride solution reveals that two moles of DBBP react with one mole of zinc. A series of tests were conducted to bring DBBP to its full loading capacity and the analysis of the results confirms this stoichiometric factor of 2. Extraction isotherms were established by varying either the AIO ratio or the concentration of zinc in the aqueous feed. Both curves were found to be identical.

Extrapolation of the rock properties obtained from the cores exploration holes to the surrounding areas often causes problems because of frequent sudden changes in the geologic composition of strata. To address this problem, the author has been developing a method of rapid strength testing "in situ," with application of a borehole penetrometer. This method, as opposed to conventional laboratory testing, does not require rock samples to be retrieved and handled/machined before testing. The results are generated by strength determination on the wall of a drill hole at a site. The newest development is a borehole penetrometer that requires only a 1.38.mm (1.5 in) diameter hole. The small diameter of the penetrometer body allows for drilling test holes with production mine equipment such as roof bolters. It opens the possibility of broad application in coal mines, as well as in hard rock mines and tunneling. The principles of the apparatus are described and are illustrated with examples of its applications.

The possible value of the red hematite iron ore of the southern Appalachian States, if some practicable method of concentrating it could be devised, has long been recognized. The ore is very low grade, and although in enormous quantities, particularly in the States of Alabama, Tennessee, and Georgia, is only at a few points rich enough to work, and even the best of it ranks among the lowest grade iron ores being mined in the United States. A cheap method of beneficiating this ore would make enormous quantities available and vastly increase the iron-ore resources of the country. However, this low-grade ore in effect constitutes a potential iron reserve, and as long as ample quantities of ore can be obtained elsewhere the question of its utilization does not demand immediate notice. Where these ores are in part of workable grade, however, a problem of more immediate importance arises which, from considerations of economy and prevention of waste in their mining, ought to be solved or, at least, attacked as quickly as possible. Where these ores are being worked they are usually intimately associated with lowergrade material that in mining is left behind. The difficulty and expense of going into ground broken by old workings makes the recovery of this lower-grade ore practically impossible and it is lost forever. Success in concentrating the red ores, therefore, would save material that is now being irretrievably lost. The successful largescale concentration of low-grade ore in the last few years on the Lake Superior iron ranges should encourage the attack of similar problems in the Birmingham district. While studying iron-mining methods in the United States for the Bureau of Mines, Dwight E. Woodbridge, consulting mining engineer of the bureau, was impressed with the importance of this problem, and believed it merited the attention of the bureau. Accordingly, Mr. Woodbridge had Mr. W. J. Penhallegon, general superintendent of ore mines and quarries of the Republic Iron & Steel Co., of Birmingham, send the author of this report five samples of the unworkable siliceous ores of the district. The results of concentration experiments with these ores made a more thorough 'and systematic investigation desirable. In consequence, the author subsequently collected samples in the district, and these became the basis of the experimental work described in this report. The results are published by the Bureau of Mines as a part of its efforts to increase efficiency in the utilization of mineral resources. The experiments were conducted in the geological laboratory of the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Md., with the aid of Raymond Leibensperger, mining assistant. The chemical analyses were made by A. C. Fieldner, chemist, of the Bureau of Mines. The author wishes to express his appreciation of the courtesies extended to him by the mining companies of the district, and particularly to Mr. W. J. Penhallegon, of the Republic Iron & Steel Co. Gold extraction from double refractory ores using conventional cyanidation has proved challenging due to the presence of carbon within the ore. Carbon particles may adsorb leached gold resulting in gold losses to tailings, i.e. preg-robbing the gold. Some of the preg-robbed gold may be recovered by the application of the HiTeCC process on CIL tailings. The process developed by Metso Outotec involves caustic conditioning of the tailings followed by high temperature desorption and simultaneous adsorption onto virgin activated carbon of the aurodicyanide. The aim of this paper was to develop a model for the HiTeCC process which could be used to support design and optimisation of the process, based on the adsorption characteristics of the preg-robbing and activated carbons. It was found that accurate experimental isotherms can be used to predict the behaviour of preg-robbing adsorbents. Comparing the sorption isotherms for preg-robbing ores and activated carbon indicated similar dependencies on temperature and ionic composition. Applying boundary layer diffusion models coupled with experimentally determined isotherms for preg-robbing ore and activated carbon, the HiTeCC process was successfully simulated at experimental and plant scale. Gold recovery of the HiTeCC process is most sensitive to the temperature of desorption and gold loading of the activated carbon, with increased temperature improving recovery. The gold loading of the activated carbon in the process should always be maintained lower than that of the normalised pregrobbing carbon gold loading to ensure favourable conditions for adsorption onto the activated carbon. Caustic conditioning stabilises adsorption and is therefore not necessary during the desorption stages of the process, but potentially improves recovery during adsorption. To remove hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide in automotive exhaust by oxidation , a catalyst of 4.2 percent Uз Og , 1.7 percent Cr₂ 0 , and 1.7 percent CuO supported on 1 /8 - inch y- alumina spheres was tested in a reactor in place of the muffler of a 1 / 2 - ton truck . Tests were made with both nonleaded and leaded gasolines . With the engine at operating temperature , tests were made with the engine idling and with the vehicle cruising at 30 mph . Auxiliary air was added to maintain an oxygen concentration of 3 to 4 percent in the gas leaving the catalytic reactor . The vehicle was operated for 83 hours (about 60 percent of the time with the engine idling ) and 525 miles with nonleaded gasoline . Conversions of 98 percent of the hydrocarbons and 100 percent of the carbon monoxide were achieved with the engine idling and with 7,000 ppm carbon atoms and 4- percent carbon monoxide in the feed to the reactor . Hydrocarbon conversions of 75 percent were obtained at cruising speeds of 30 mph with a feed of 1,700 ppm carbon atoms ; the carbon monoxide concentration was less than 0.3 percent in the feed and was unchanged in passage through the reactor . Identical activity was obtained initially in switching to a gasoline containing 1.9 ml tetraethyl lead (TEL) per gallon . However, there was a gradual loss in activity thereafter . Conversions in tests with the engine idling about 50 percent of the time , had decreased by 23 percent for the hydrocarbons and by 25 percent for the carbon monoxide from their initial values after 122 hours and 1,300 miles of operation with leaded gasoline . The levels of radioactive materials in the exhaust of the reactor and the radiation in the vehicle were negligible .

The paper point out the structural openings and the localization of ore bodies. Structural openings in rocks constitute the primary permeability network for the formation of most hydrothermal ore deposits. The distribution, geometry, density, and orientation of ore bodies in structural openings are controlled by two primary factors: the far and near field stresses and the mechanical properties of rock. When stress controls the orientation and kinematics of faults and fractures in the absence of pre-existing weaknesses, ore shoot orientation is perpendicular to the fault slip vector and can be predicted by kinematic analysis. However, when structural openings form along pre-existing weaknesses, ore shoot orientation cannot always be predicted by kinematic analysis. Because we can classify ore bodies based on the types of geological structures discussed above and the variations that naturally occur from material property heterogeneity, exploration for hydrothermal ore deposits should include analysis of geologic structure and evolution, rheological variations, pre-existing weakness, and fault kinematics to evaluate structuralcontrols on localization of ore bodies.

The emerging discipline of ‘geometallurgy’ is not new but is becoming increasingly recognised as a discrete and high-value activity. Geometallurgy involves a quantified and spatially constrained approach to ore characterisation in terms of relationships to critical processing performance behaviours. A key outcome is enhanced economic optimisation of mining and improved risk management tools.Industry recognition of the need for large-scale, integrated research to support this emerging area resulted in commencement of a major ongoing initiative in mid-2005. The AMIRA International P843 ‘GeMIII’ project (Geometallurgical Mapping and Mine Modelling) is a cross-discipline collaboration involving a number of world-class research organisations supported by over 20 industry sponsors.The project is delivering integrated tools and methods which link intrinsic rock characteristics to prediction of mineral processing performance. These indices must be capable of spatial distribution in 3D resource models and incorporation into mine planning and optimisation. A key aspect is provision of new cost-effective tools and methods which can provide the large numbers of measured and estimated data points required to undertake effective modelling and spatial distribution. The integrated methodology and enabling technologies being developed through the ongoing AMIRA GeMIII project are outlined, together with implications for supporting industry best practice.

The Boulder batholith is a composite intrusive in which the Butte quartz monzonite is the dominant rock type. Quartz porphyry dikes intruded the quartz monzonite in directions which were subsequently followed by the eastwest- striking Anaconda system of veins, the earliest major veins in the district. Anaconda veins are faulted by northwest-striking veins of the Blue system, which are most prominent in the central third of the district. Anaconda veins are the major producers in the western third of the district and also in the eastern third, where the "horsetail" zones break off from them. Individual oreshoots are thousands of feet long as well as deep on both systems of veins, but they are generally more persistent and thicker on the Anaconda veins. Viewed broadly, the mineralization in the big veins is arranged in crudely concentric zones of zinc and manganese around a central zone of copper. Only slightly offset from these zones, but earlier structurally, is a zone in which quartz-molybdenite veinlets are prominent. This zone tops at about the 2800 level and widens downward. The pattern of distribution of Cu-Fe-S series minerals in the large veins of the copper zone is not symmetrical with respect to the metal zones. There is a fringe of chalcopyrite-bornite all around the copper front. However, within the copper zone, pyrite-chalcocite-enargitecovellite- digenite assemblages are prevalent near its eastern edge from the 3800 level to the surface, whereas deep on the large Anaconda veins in the western part of the copper zone, chalcopyrite is dominant. Here the chalcopyrite grades upward into bornite-chalcocite ores and eastward into the high-sulfur assemblages of the Leonard mine. Sericite-biotite-K-feldspar alteration envelopes, containing up to about 2 per cent copper as chalcopyrite, are present on some of the quartz-molybdenite veinlets at deep mine levels in the molybdenite zone. These envelopes contrast sharply mineralogically and chemically with the later sericitic and argillic alteration envelopes around Main Stage veins. K'0-Ar'0 ratios indicate that they may be older by about 4 m.y. Secondarily enriched copper ores are mined in the Berkeley pit in the southeastern part of the district. At the present time they account for about half of Butte's production of copper.

"As part of a major diversification project, RHI AG, through its plant in Drogheda Ireland, has developed a Caustic Calcined Magnesium Oxide (CCM) for use in the Cobalt (Co) & Nickel (Ni) hydrometallurgical extraction industry. In the course of the project, the company investigated the chemical and physical properties of a number of different Magnesia’s used in Co & Ni hydrometallurgy applications and has been able to determine the important parameters for a successful Magnesia for this application. A number of live plant trials have confirmed the results of this testwork and the company is now proceeding to produce this product in commercial quantities at Premier Periclase Ltd., the RHI AG plant in Drogheda, Ireland. This paper will outline the development work conducted by the company and highlight the important chemical and physical properties that make a successful CCM. Much of the research was conducted at the RHI Technology Centre in Leoben, Austria. In addition, a number of external laboratory studies were conducted on behalf of RHI AG. The result of this work has allowed the company to develop a Magnesia product with optimised properties for use in the Cobalt and Nickel hydrometallurgical extraction process.INTRODUCTION Premier Periclase is part of RHI AG, a globally operating supplier of refractory products, systems and services, headquartered in Vienna, Austria. The company produces Magnesia from seawater at its plant in Drogheda, Ireland. While the main focus is on production of refractory grade Dead Burned Magnesia for the steel industry, the plant also produces a number of different grades of Caustic Calcined Magnesia as well as Magnesium Hydroxide products. As part of a major project to diversify the company’s product base, the use of CCM in the Cobalt (Co) & Nickel (Ni) hydrometallurgical extraction industry was investigated. One of the company’s highly reactive grades of Caustic Calcined Magnesia was found to be particularly suitable for this application. In an effort to understand what makes a successful Magnesia for hydrometallurgy the chemical and physical properties of different Magnesia’s used in Co & Ni hydrometallurgy were investigated. This paper and conference presentation outlines the findings of this process."

This paper will examine the challenges involved in ventilating and cooling South African mines, with particular emphasis on solutions to the issues of heat (generally associated with depth), mechanization and energy efficiency. Comparisons will be made with other international mining areas. Some of the deepest mines in the world are to be found in the South African goldfields. The Mponeng mine is approaching 4,000 m below surface, with virgin rock temperatures (VRT) of between 60°C and 70°C. Mining at these depths has only been possible with the use of large refrigeration plants supplying cold air, water and ice to the workings. In the Bushveld Igneous Complex, where most of South Africa?s platinum mines are located, similar VRTs are being experienced at significantly shallower depths. This is due to the different geothermal properties of the host rock between the two areas. Existing mines are being forced to go deeper and new underground mines are being planned and constructed in other areas with widely differing thermal conditions. South African metal mining has traditionally been labour intensive for historical reasons as well as for the narrow tabular nature of many ore bodies. Due to cost pressures and labour problems, some mines have been investigating the possibility of using mechanized equipment, both diesel and electric, to increase production and to improve efficiency. Studies have been carried out to determine the effect of the additional equipment on the overall ventilation system and some of the conclusions are discussed. The use of diesel equipment adds heat and pollutants to the ventilation air but, although electrical equipment has a lesser effect on the ventilation systems, it is generally less favoured due to claims of lower flexibility/manoeuvrability. Mechanization holds the promise of more concentrated mining activities but, with higher localized ventilation and cooling needs. Systems which will control the provision of air and cooling more effectively are required and are being implemented. In the 1990s and early 2000s, the South African economy experienced significant growth which was not matched by the growth in infrastructure. Consequently, at present there is a shortage of electricity generation capacity which affects large industrial consumers, including mines. Increasing levels of heat and mechanization will require more electrical energy for ventilation and cooling. There are many initiatives underway to save power or to shift consumption to periods of national low demand and these will be described.

An essentially chemical technique has been developed on a small scale for the efficient utilization of certain domestic titaniferous iron ores. Three main steps are involved: (1) Sintering the ore at 1,050° C. with carbon and soda ash to reduce the iron to metal powder, retaining the titania in the slag, (2) separating the powdered iron from the slag, after wet grinding, by magnetic or gravity methods, and (3) sulfuric-acid decomposition of the titania fraction to produce pigment and certain byproducts. The technique was first applied to the tailings from the Bureau of Mines bauxite-concentrating plant at Bauxite, Ark. A good grade of powdered iron was produced from this material. Subsequently, the work was diverted to the study of the titaniferous magnetite from the MacIntyre Mine at Tahawus, N.Y., because of the potentially higher recoveries of iron, titanium and vanadium. Ninety percent of the iron in this ore has been recovered as an iron powder analyzing 90 percent metallic iron and containing 2 to 3 percent TiO2. The remaining titania was found in the slag and was recovered as pigment-grade TiO2 by application of a suitable technique. The vanadium was distributed between the TiO2 fraction and the alkaline liquor resulting from the wet-grinding and magnetic-separation operations, with only a minor proportion retained by the metallic iron.

Coal spontaneous combustion in longwall gobs is a major concern in coal mines. In comparison to other hazards, this phenomenon is difficult to detect. Fifteen factors influencing coal spontaneous combustion in longwall gobs were identified from the literature. The logical relationships between these factors were evaluated and quantified by decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) and interpretive structural modelling (ISM) methods. A four-level hierarchical structure model was established. The research shows that combining DEMATEL and ISM can reveal the key factors that influence coal spontaneous combustion in longwall gobs and establishthe interactions and relationships among these factors. The results can provide the basis for preventing and controlling coal spontaneous combustion in longwall gobs.

A number of the pegmatites in the southern Black Hills of western South Dakota contain sheet mica; and as the demand increased during World War II the area became an important producer of strategic qualities of mica. During this period of maximum activity, the U. S.. Geological Survey made detailed studies of the geological structural control, the mineralogical associations, and the production Of many pegmatites in the Black Hills. On the basis of results of this study, and at the suggestion of the Geological Survey, several of the pegmatites were examined by the Bureau of Mines, and a few were selected for further investigation. Accordingly, the White Bear, Silver Dollar, Buster Dike, and Hot Shot mines were diamond-core-drilled in 1947. The Hot Shot mine was investigated further by deepening the shaft and crosscutting the pegmatite in 1948. The mica-bearing deposits occur in lenticular intrusions of pegmatite in schists of various mineral composition. Eleven diamond-drill holes, totaling 2,111.4 feet in length, were completed on the four deposits. The shaft on the Hot Shot deposit was deepened 44 feet to the 112-foot level, and crosscuts were driven from the bottom of the shaft to the hanging Wall and foot wall of the pegmatite. This publication briefly describes the location, ownership, and history of the deposits and gives details of the work done by the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey.

The metallurgical laboratory data developed in this study indicate an improved electrowinning process for producing higher purity cerium ingot. A typical sample of the Reno electrocerium contains 99.9 weight-percent cerium and the following impurities: Total other rare-earth elements, less than 0.04 percent; iron not detected; silicon and aluminum, less than 0.02 percent each; calcium plus magnesium, less than 0.01 percent; carbon, 0.01 percent; oxygen, 0.002 percent; hydrogen, 0.0003 percent; and nitrogen, 0.0015 percent.

Urban quarries offer one of the greatest opportunities for profit in non-metallic mining with limited financial risk IF properly evaluated, planned and developed to meet market needs. Location, with respect to market, is the prime consideration. Geologic considerations and quality of rock are nearly as important. Cost factors and return on investment (ROI) are the principal financial considerations. Risk of capital is determined by weighing all factors that should be considered and how well judgements are based on information acquired. It is a simple, true axiom of business that an investment must be founded on amount of capital required with its expected return plus profit, expertise required to operate and time involved. Urban quarries generally offer excellent stone product market opportunities. Costs of land with mineral containment and processing operations are much greater than in rural areas. Environmental problems have become increasingly severe. Competition from other quarries in the market area is usually directly proportional to the profit attractiveness. Risk of capital (initial, developmental and operational) can be evaluated and reduced only by thorough analysis of the entire situation. Time and money expended on planning and preliminary investigations probably represent the most productive investment of available company resources.

The serious shortage of domestically produced asbestos during the war prompted the Bureau of Mines to investigate reported asbestos deposits in Alaska. The most promising' appeared to be these in the Cosmos Hills and Jade Hills areas along the Kobuk River in northwestern Alaska. The deposits along the west side of Shungnak River, a tributary of the Kobuk River, were the first to be investigated by the Bureau, in the summer of 1944. Four bulldozer trenches were excavated, from Which a 2-ton sample was taken. This sample was shipped to Rolla, Mo., for testing in the Bureau of Mines laboratory. In the summer of 1945 an investigation of asbestos deposits on Cosmos Creek, also a tributary of the Kobuk River, was begun; the work was completed during the field season of 1946.
