Neutron diffraction measurements were performed on steel encapsulated metal matrix composites (MMCs) in order to quantify bulk residual stresses. A coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) mismatch induced residual compressive stress method is utilized as a means of improving the ductility of the MMCs and overall efficiency of several macro hybridized materials systems. Systems consisting of an A36, 304 stainless steel, or Nitronic® 50 stainless steel shell filled with an Al-SiC or Al-Al2O3 metal matrix composite are evaluated in this work. Upon cooling from processing temperatures residual strains are generated due to a CTE mismatch between each of the phases: steel, aluminum, and reinforcement. The analysis shows variation in the measured strain and stress results due to outer steel thickness, difference in CTE between materials, and relative position within the composite.

Asimismo construyó adoratorios para los dioses Inti, Huiracocha e Illapa, a los cuales dotó de tierras, ganado y personal de servicio. Luego se casó con Cusi Rimay y retorna a Quito y Cuzco. Posteriormente muere Cusi Rimay y se casa con Rahua Ocllo, futura madre de Huáscar. Inicia una nueva campaña militar hacia el Collasuyo, llegando a la región de los Charcas, pasa a Chile y regresa a Cusco. De otro lado, en uno de los viajes de reconocimiento a tierras peruanas de Francisco Pizarro, Yupanqui se informa y ordena el traslado de los españoles a Tumibamba. En ese contexto, Diego Palomino, uno de los españoles en llegar, realizó un croquis de la zona yacimientos auríferos de importancia, ubicados en el territorio de los Pucamurus, son los de Tomaque, Aconipa, Picorana, Quipe y Santa Agueda, que no son explotados actualmente por falta de recursos hídricos.

Circular economy opportunities for the mining sector are presented in this paper. A literature review was undertaken, followed by qualitative data gathering through survey questionnaires and unstructured interviews, and stakeholder engagements through workshops. The circular economy opportunities were identified and categorised according to the three circular economy principles of designing out waste and pollution, keeping products and materials in use, and regenerating natural systems. Opportunities aligned with the first principle include increased ore extraction efficiency processes, water recovery and recycling, substitution of raw materials, technology and waste utilisation for carbon capture and biotechnology. The second principle includes opportunities such as zero waste-to-landfill strategies, repurposing of mine waste, re-mining of tailings, recycling metals and processing of residues, and urban mining of electronic waste. Opportunities aligned with the third principle include the adoption of renewable energy, green hydrogen production, repurposing of post mining landscapes, and eradication of alien invasive vegetation. Furthermore, the challenges of implementing circular economy in the mining sector are discussed. The current rate of waste generation from mining activities far exceeds the rate of reuse and repurposing. Recycling of large tyres and characterisation of hazardous electronic waste also pose challenges. The most implementable circular economy opportunities in the mining sector are those aligned with the second principle of keeping materials in use. The high impact opportunities aligned with the first principle of designing out waste and pollution, and the third principle of regenerating natural systems, are more difficult to implement as they require large investments.

Cone penetration testing (CPT) is a popular and cost effective tool for geotechnical site characterization. CPT consists of pushing at a constant rate an electronic penetrometer into penetrable soils and recording cone bearing (qm), sleeve friction (fs) and dynamic pore pressure (u) with depth. The measured qm, fs and u values are utilized to estimate soil type and associated properties based predominantly on empirical correlations. The cone bearing measurements are highly susceptible to additive measurement noise for sandy, silty and gravelly soils. This measurement noise results in high peaks due to interbedded gravels and stones and low peaks due to softer materials or local pore pressure build-up. To date there has been little progress in filtering this additive noise aside from ad hoc techniques, which include discarding qm measurements and smoothing/averaging qm measurements. This paper outlines a qm filtering technique which attempts to put structure into the estimation problem. In this case, the dynamics of the cone bearing measurements are modelled within a state-space mathematical formulation and a Kalman filter (KF) is then utilized to obtain optimal estimates of qm. The mathematical details of the qm KF algorithm are outlined in this paper along with the results from a challenging test bed simulation.

It is known that stoichiometric NiTi transforms to a structure of lower symmetry near room temperature. The present investigation deals primarily with the changes in the electrical and magnetic properties which occur at the transformation. The effects of composition and various heat treatments on electrical properties are also discussed. In recent investigations by Purdy and Parr,' Wang et a1.,2 Dautovich and Purdy,~ Dautovich et a1.,4 and the authors, ~,' NiTi has been observed to undergo a martensitic phase transformation from the ordered CsCl (B2) structure to one of lower symmetry. The crystal structure of the low-temperature modification is still not completely worked out. This transformation occurs near room temperature for the stoichiometric composition. The thermodynamic, elastic, crystallographic, and microstructural characteristics of this transformation for some compositions have been previously reported.'-= In the present investigation, the changes in the electrical transport properties and magnetic susceptibility of NiTi when it undergoes the martensitic phase transformation have been measured. The approximate composition range covered is 48 to 52 pct Ti.* *All compositions are given in atomic percent._____________________ EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES AND RESULTS 1) Sample Preparation. The NiTi alloys were prepared from iodide titanium (>99.92 pct Ti) and vacuum-premelted carbonyl nickel (>99.95 pct Ni) by repeated arc melting under gettered argon and casting in a water-cooled copper mold. After the cast buttons were hot-forged at 800" to 950°C, the oxidized surface was removed by grinding and etching. Samples were cut from the worked polycrystalline buttons. After fabrication, the samples were annealed 1 hr at 900°C and water-quenched. The composition of the alloys was assumed to be the same as in the initial feed. This assumption was supported by material balance checks on 100-g arc-melted buttons which demonstrated quantitative recovery to within k0.02 pct. The oxygen content of the alloys was '150 ppma (weight) and the carbon content was 30 to 50 ppm. 2) Electrical Resistivity and Hall Effect. The electrical resistivity was measured over the composition range 48 to 52 pct Ti for temperatures varying from 4.2"K to 900°C. The high-temperature and many of the low-temperature experiments were carried out using conventional 4-probe dc techniques.7 The Hall coefficient and ac resistivity were measured at 20 cps using the apparatus shown schematically in Fig. 1. The equipment is basically an ac potentiometer: The resistive or Hall voltage of the sample is balanced by a comparison voltage provided by a dividing network across a standard series resistance. The off-balance signal is amplified by a Tektronix 122 amplifier and detected by a Princeton Applied Research (PAR) phase-sensitive detector. The precision of the resistivity and Hall coefficient measurements is i0.1 and i3 pct, respectively. The uncertainty in the data is increased by i2 pct from the precision limits because of uncertainty in dimensions and possible end effects. The temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity and Hall effect for a stoichiometric (50.0 pct Ti) NiTi sample are illustrated in Fig. 2. In May 2000, Kanowna Belle Gold Mines (KBGM) carried out a detailed Truck versus Shaft Haulage Study. The study showed that whilst the shaft option had many operating cost benefits the capital costs were too high, therefore the truck option was selected. In May 2001, the concept of achieving æshaft typeÆ benefits without the capital costs was floated. This is achieved by separating the hoisting of ore from other mining activities. The general concept is that material from underground is transported to a central location and then transported to the surface by a special truck fleet, thus removing the dependency between trucks and loaders, providing the mine with surge capacity and decreasing operating costs. At KBGM these advantages have been gained by installing an ore pass system with a plate feeder at its base that directly loads trucks. This provides the mine with a haulage system with enough surge capacity to remove the interdependency between trucks and loaders. The plate feeder is situated just off the decline which creates the opportunity to use larger more reliable, lower cost trucks. A number of truck types were considered for the truck loop including Elphinstone AD55Æs which are the truck type being used on site prior to the truck loop, CAT 775EÆs and power trailer road trains. This paper covers the philosophy behind the truck loop, the truck selection process, project installation and commissioning, people issues and the benefits expected by the operation. As of May 2002, the project is nearing completion, with decline haulage expected to commence in July 2002.

The association of specific plants and plant communities with soils developed over underlying superficial orebodies and mineralisation has been long recognised. It has given rise to the use of plant indicators for geobotanical exploration as a regular component of primary minerals reconnaissance where there is an undisturbed vegetation cover. That the chemical composition of indicator plants is a measure of their soil environment has further led to biogeochemical prospecting methods for minerals and its use in the mapping of underlying ore deposits. Where there is a strong surface expression of metal and metalloid anomalies, concentrations of potentially phytotoxic elements may reach a level at which they have strong selective impacts on plant populations. In such circumstances, natural selection has operated in the development of a unique flora composed of plant species and individuals with genetically-based tolerances to the stressed environment in which they continue to survive. These plants are called metallophytes. Metallophytes occur globally on all metalliferous sites, both in pristine undisturbed environments and in areas of mineral workings, ancient and modern. However, the best-developed primary metallophyte vegetation is found in the most ancient areas where there has been a long-term evolutionary impact of the underlying geology through ore weathering and dispersion of metals into the rhizosphere zone. Natural selection of metal-tolerant races of plants in these largely undisturbed areas can eventually lead to speciation and the development of an endemic regional metallophyte flora (Baker et al , 2010). Mineral wastes resulting from mining activities also allow colonisation by metal-tolerant individuals leading to the establishment of metallophyte communities. The distribution and extent of such communities is determined by regional and local factors relating to climate and substrate conditions and the availability of suitable plant resources on which natural selection can operate (Baker, 2009).The ability of metallophytes to tolerate extreme metal concentrations commends them as the optimal choice for ecological restoration of mineral wastes and metal-contaminated sites. Metallophytes have recently also spawned several novel phytotechnologies, including phytoremediation and phytomining (Chaney et al, 2000, 2005; Baker and Whiting, 2008). Action towards conserving the global metallophyte resource base is imperative because many species are under threat of extinction from new and extensive mining activities (Whiting et al, 2004). This has been identified as a priority in the Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development (MMSD) Project of the Global Mining Initiative in 2002 but positive responses from the minerals industry have been slow. The last decade has, however, seen an ever-increasing interest in metal-tolerant and metal-accumulating plants, both from an academic standpoint and their use in revegetation and phytostabilisation (Tordoff et al, 2000; Baker and Whiting, 2008; Baker, 2009). Few studies have highlighted the need to conserve and develop these unique plants (Whiting et al , 2004). This presentation identifies future research needs for the conservation and exploitation of the global metallophyte biodiversity and its potential in sustainable mine closure. BUTANE OPERATED drilling rigs are a recent innovation in the petroleum industry, so extensive data on their operation are not available. However, experience indicates that, within limitations, as much can he accomplished with butane as with steam, at a decided reduction .in expense of installation and cost of operation. Commercial butane is a liquid motor fuel similar to gasoline, but much more volatile, so that it has to be stored under pressure. At 10° F. it is liquid at atmospheric pressure, but at 100° it has a pressure of 70 lb. or more. As soon as the pressure is reduced, it turns to vapor and in that state is far more easily mixed with the air necessary for combustion. Butane occurs as a by-product in the absorption process of natural gasoline extraction from casing-head gas. The product has been used to some extent 10 raise the octane value of gasoline. However, because of its volatile nature, such admixture is stable only to a limited degree. Attempts also have been made to introduce the product in a gaseous form into oil- hearing formations in repressuring work. It has, however, until recently, for the most part been wasted.

The introduction and use of synthetic materials in various applications may lead to potential hazards from toxic, gaseous, decomposition products if these materials are subjected to conditions abnormal to their intended use, such as high temperatures or burning from accidental causes. This report covers an investigation of such possible hazards from toxic gases produced by the burning or thermal decomposition of some low-density, expanded, synthetic materials, three of which consisted of polyvinylchloride and one of acrylonitrile. In the production of certain expanded plastic materials, Chemical blowing agents frequently are used to produce a cellular structure. One of these blowing or foaming agents contains azo-bis-isobutyronitrile, which is designated in this report as PN. Information indicates that a product of decomposition of this blowing agent, formed in the blowing operation, is tetra-methyl-succino-nitrile, designated as TSN, Which is significantly toxic. Decomposition of the blowing agent, with release of its azo nitrogen, is represented by the following reaction:

Introduction The purpose of this paper is to give a brief, general outline of mining practices at Torbrit Silver mine. The geology of the mine is touched on as it is felt that a rough picture of the geology will result in a clearer understanding of the mining methods employed. The main part of the paper deals with mining methods and a section is included on haulage. Development practice is mentioned only briefly. Torbrit Silver Mines, Limited, a subsidiary of Mining Corporation of Canada, is located in the Alice Arm area of northern British Columbia. Access to the mine is by boat to the village of Alice Arm at the head of Alice arm, then truck road, following the course of Kitsault river for 18 miles in a northerly direction to the plant site. The main portal is a further two-thirds of a mile along the course of the river, at approximately the same elevation as the plant, 1,014 feet above sea level. Geology The ore occurs in a massive, irregular-shaped quartz-barite body replacing a folded area in a series of volcanic breccias, tuffs, and flow rocks locally referred to as 'green-stones'. A series of parallel, nearly vertical, fine-grained basic dykes cut across the formation at right angles to the strike of the ore belt over a horizontal distance of 140 feet. The whole of the quartz-barite vein material, which ranges up to several hundred feet wide in places, carries silver values but commercial grade is confined to lenses and shoots where there have been more than usual concentrations of native silver and silver-bearing minerals. The ore-bearing structure plunges at approximately 25 degrees along an axis striking roughly N.65°W.

Experiments have been carried out to establish whether time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) is able to differentiate monolayer and multilayer coverage of thiol collectors on sulfide minerals. The systems investigated were those for which x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is able to provide an independent determination of the extent of coverage, and included diethyldithiophosphate (DTP) and 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) on chalcocite, DTP on Ag2+MS prepared by sulfidising metallic silver, and isobutyl xanthate (BX) and MBT on galena. For monolayer adsorption of MBT on chalcocite, peaks from MBTû but not Cu(MBT)û ions were evident. For multilayer coverage, Cu(MBT)2û ions were clearly present, notwithstanding the fact that other data had identified the principal multilayer species as Cu(MBT). For adsorbed DTP on copper and silver sulfides, DTPû and metal(DTP)Hû peaks were observed for monolayer and multilayer coverage. Although the multilayer species was expected to be predominantly metal(DTP), metal(DTP)2û ions were evident for multilayer (but not monolayer) coverage. For the PbS/BX system, intact Pb(BX)2 or Pb(OH)BX ions were not detected for multilayer coverage, although Pb-containing ions heavier than PbBX were. Indeed, for all the systems studied, ToF-SIMS was able to differentiate monolayer from multilayer coverage. In general, however, the SIMS evidence alone might not be sufficiently definitive to effect the differentiation. In the case of collector adsorption on copper and silver sulfides, if the multilayer species detected had been the metal monothiolate only, and had not involved the formation of some metal dithiolate, then ToF-SIMS might not have been able to provide an unequivocal differentiation of the two coverage conditions.

The removal of a cylindrical core from thick-wall sections for creep analysis by the relatively new Weldcore® process represents a very exciting methodology for obtaining more representative creep damage data from large engineering structures. The cylindrical core that is removed, representing about 60% of the wall thickness, leaves a substantial removal site that needs to be repaired. This paper presents data pertaining to taper Friction Hydro Pillar Processing as an alternative repair technique for filling the core removal site. Process parameters were evaluated with special attention being paid to the effect of downward force on process response variables, weld defects, and mechanical properties of 10CrMo910 steel. Process temperature and torque response as well as total process energy input were also considered. This paper also assesses the static and dynamic performance of this repair technique. The influence of a varying downward force and the occurrence and position of discontinuities were quantified. Downward force was shown to have the most notable effect on weld joint dynamic performance and was found to be related to the process temperatures achieved in close proximity to the weld interface.

Mining is one of the important primary industries of Canada, with a gross production in 1927 estimated at $241,773,000- the highest in the history of the country-and an impressive dividend record. It is quite apparent, therefore, that mining is a business worthy of the careful attention of the people of Canada. Furthermore, with a vast undeveloped territory more or less mineralized, it is highly probable that our mining industry will continue to expand indefinitely, with a consequent increase in production and in the amounts of the yearly profits distributed. In recent years, the public has taken a larger interest than formerly in mining-an interest, moreover, that is not academic, but primarily from the viewpoint of profits. It is quite evident that mining is a profitable business, at least to some, and the average man on the street, hearing of these profits, is attracted thereto. I have no doubt that many of you have .read in promotion prospectuses, with figures to prove it, that mining is the most conservative, the safest, and the highest-yielding business in the world. Now, a lot of this information is best judged by the old saying that "While figures don't lie, liars figure". At the same time, mining, properly conducted, is a profitable business, even though speculative, and undoubtedly much profit will come from Canadian mines in the future. In this paper my conclusions regarding mining investments are based largely on British Columbia experience, together with some slight knowledge of mining conditions in the other Provinces. It is considered, however, that the inferences drawn are applicable to mining throughout Canada.

New technologies, such as computer based learning, wireless computing, internet2, online courses, distance learning, and in general multimedia applications are being implemented in the higher education sector in an increasing manner. However, these implementations are not coherent, and lack standards. However, one example of the existing standards is the development and implementation of the virtual learning environments. These technology tools help in delivering the eLearning objectives. There is a major initiative in Europe (eEurope action plan) in promoting eLearning towards creating a knowledge-based society. Technology implementation is the major driver for achieving the eLearning objectives. A two-year pilot project on implementing technology tools including virtual learning environment (VLE), video-conferencing, and simulation and visualization was carried out for providing a blended learning environment for undergraduate and graduate students in Mining Engineering (undergraduate) and Mineral Deposit Evaluation (M.Sc.) course at the Imperial College London. The pilot project was funded by the Imperial College Centre for Educational Development (ICCED). The project did contribute towards activities for creating an institute-wide eLearning strategy in line with the eEurope action plan.

IN 1874, with Mr. H. Y. Attrill, of Baltimore, Md., I made an examination of some property at Goderich with reference to sinking for and mining salt. With this end in view we visited all the wells in the neighborhood, but the information sought being of so unreliable a character I advised the putting down of a borehole on the property. This has since been done, the result of which has lately been published by Dr. T. Sterry Hunt in the Toronto Globe. From this there appears to have been passed through six beds of salt of an aggregate thickness of 123 feet. Rock-salt was known to exist, for, by the boring of existing wells, small crystals had been brought to the surface in the dirt, but no attempt had before been made to obtain a reliable sample or to prove the number and thickness of the beds. The question now remaining for discussion is, shall the present method of obtaining the salt be continued, or shall the beds be won by a shaft in a regular mining fashion, by which means the salt may be gotten in a condition almost ready for the market? The present mode of obtaining salt is by boreholes from 6 inches to 8 inches in diameter drilled to the beds, into which is inserted a pump. The "feeders" of fresh water intersected in drilling the well are allowed to descend on the outside of the pump-tube to the salt beds and there become saturated, when, on use of the pump, brine is obtained for evaporation. In the beginning brine can only be had in limited quantity, but by the daily application of the pump, and the gradual solution of the salt, a larger surface becomes exposed to the action of the fresh water, and a continuous supply of brine is obtained. It will then be understood that the supply of brine is dependent upon the feeders of fresh water intersected in boring the well, which, we are told, have never shown any sign of diminution, and this is the water that must be encountered in sinking a shaft. There are ten wells in operation at Goderich, the most important one to the present project being known as the Hawley Well, located at an elevation a few feet above Lake Huron at the mouth of the river Maitland, at a much lower level and nearer to the proposed shaft than any other well in the district. Introduction and Historical Background The office and mining operations of Pacific Asbestos Corporation are located near Copperopolis, California in the foothills of the Sierras about fifty miles east of Stockton. This is historic country in the heart of the old Mother Lode gold district. Mark Twain's famous story of the jumping frog, written here, is still commemorated in an annual contest in Calaveras County,' and the camp at Poker Flats, described by Bret Harte, was only a few miles from the present mine.2 Joaquin Murrieta, the famous Mexican bandit started his three year reign of terror in this vicinity,3 and Black Bart, the P08 laureate of the stagecoach robbers, held up his first stage at Funk Hill, just three miles north of the mine. His last robbery was at almost the place, on the top of the hill overlooking the Stanislaus River ferry crossing. Although this was his favorite country, and he traveled extensively through it, he was not a credit to his acclaimed profession of Mining Engineer because there is no evidence that he ever recognized the asbestos, and he was finally caught as a consequence of the robbery at the ferry.4 One of the old stagecoach roads crossed the Stanislaus River at the mine site, and the ferry landing may still be seen from the main haul road into the pit. The road itself is partly buried under the rock dumps. In spite of its location and apparently prominent exposure, the first work on the asbestos deposit was not recorded until 1904.5 Development of the present operations was started in 1959 by Jefferson Lake Asbestos Corporation, a subsidiary of Jefferson Lake Sulphur Company. Management control of the company changed hands several times and it was later reorganized under the name of Pacific Asbestos Corporation. In December, 1968, a controlling interest was acquired by H. K. Porter Company, Inc. Figure (1) shows the mill and office buildings as seen from a site near the entry road. The offices are at the left with the mill warehouse in the foreground. The conveyor at left center carrys mine concentrates up the hill from the crusher. In the background are the dry rock storage building and mill tailings piles. Since the beginning of mining operations in 1962, seven and three-quarter million tons of ore and fifteen million tons of waste have been removed from the open pit which now measures about 1400 x 1800 feet at its widest points. The lowest operating level is at an elevation of 726 feet about 325 feet below the original surface. Figure (2) shows the open pit looking toward the west end. The main haul road can be seen along the side of the pit. A shovel is operating at the bottom of the pit while a front end loader on the level above provides ore for blending. In the background are rock dumps for waste stripping. The company markets an annual production of 30-35,000 tons of chrysotile fibre in groups 4 through 7, under the Mother Lode Brand

They are a class of high strength, low carbon steels containing small additions of niobium (Nb), titanium (Ti), molybdenum (Mo) and/or vanadium (V). These steels have good strength, toughness and excellent weldability, which are attributed in part to the presence of nano-sized carbides, nitrides and carbonitrides. In the pursuit of developing higher strength microalloyed steels, it is of great interest to quantify the size, distribution, volume fraction and chemical speciation of these precipitates. However, characterization techniques suitable for quantifying fine precipitates are limited. Possible characterization techniques include SEM, TEM and matrix dissolution. A comparison is presented of the various techniques.

For many years, pulverized coal (PC) boilers in utility power plants have been the dominant market for domestic coal. Today, two new coal utilization technologies challenge the PC boiler's dominance. Atmospheric fluidized bed combustion (AFBC) and "coal gasification/combined cycle" (GCC) stand on the verge of commercial demonstration in the utility environment at a scale of 100 MW. Developed over the past decade, these technologies respond to the demands for cleaner ways to burn coal and for more flexibility in fuel supply. In the near term, these are the "clean coal" technologies most likely to have a significant impact, because they are ready for commercial application. As for environmental acceptability, consider that just a few years ago one of the environmental slogans was "no coal in California." Indeed, the only large quantities of coal above ground in California at that time were in transit on the way to Asia. Today, thanks to new technology, we can point to two operational coal-burning plants in California and one in the works: * Cool Water GCC demonstration plant (100 MW) * California Portland Cement AFBC commercial cogeneration, near Riverside (190 000 lb/hr steam) * Energy Factors AFBC commercial cogeneration at Stockton, to be operational 1988 (44 MW)

Apart from its role as an essential input to a wide array of agricultural chemicals and industrial processes, sulfur is interesting in that its supply involves competition between primary product and by-product. This general production structure is found repeatedly among markets for metals and other industrial minerals, and research results from the sulfur market potentially carry over to other markets with similar structures. The purpose of this paper is to present an analysis of the recent and prospective market for sulfur. The analysis will rely heavily on simulation using a comprehensive model of the North American sulfur market developed by the author.
