"Using the facility of reduction experiment, the low temperature reduction pulverization and reduction behavior of sinter in oxygen blast furnace (OBF) were studied. Through analyzing the results, the difference of pulverization and reduction behavior of sinter in OBF and conventional blast furnace (BF) were discussed. Furthermore, the effect laws of reduction temperature and the content of CO and H2 on reduction behavior of sinter were studied. Also the controlling step of iron oxide reduction was discussed. Compared with BF, the low temperature reduction pulverization of sinter became serious at 773 K; reduction rate became faster at 1173 K; reduction time became less and final reduction degree was increased in OBF. With increasing of H2 and CO contents, the reduction of sinter was promoted. The reduction process was controlled by interface chemical reaction at the earlier stage and by interface chemical reaction and internal diffusion at the final stage.IntroductionThe new ironmaking technology of Oxygen Blast Furnace (OBF) is most likely to be used in large-scale application process. The concept relies on the removal of the CO2 contained in the top gas of the blast furnace. Therefore the useful components, i.e. CO+H2, can be recycled back into the furnace and reused as reducing agents. In addition, injecting oxygen (O2) into the furnace instead of preheated air, removes unwanted nitrogen (N2) from the gas. Under the pressure of CO2 emissions in iron and steel making, the growing international shortage of coking coal resources and the rising price of coke, OBF has attracted attentions of both domestic and foreign researchers, because it has so many advantages such as high productivity, high PCI rate, low coke rate, high gas reducing capability and high top gas calorific value, etc [1-7]. As a result of recycling most of the top gas after CO2 removal and injecting oxygen into the furnace, the reduction capacity of blast furnace gas will be increased, so the metallurgical behavior of OBF's iron burden is different from traditional blast furnace. Therefore, it is one of the keys to develop this technology, which studies the metallurgical behavior of sinter in OBF. The purpose of this paper is to study the low temperature reduction pulverization and reduction behavior of sinter at the atmosphere of OBF, which includes the difference of low temperature reduction pulverization and reduction behavior of sinter in oxygen blast furnace and conventional Blast Furnace (BF). It will provide theoretical basis for the development of OBF."

THE object of most size reduction operations in the mineral industry is to liberate the grains of valuable minerals in the ore from those of the gangue. This is usually accomplished by crushing and grinding the entire mass of ore until there is only a small probability that any single particle contains more than one mineral. During this size reduction only limited control exists over size or composition of the particles exposed to the breaking action, and there is no control over the paths followed by cracks generated during the operation. This lack of control usually results in overgrinding and in production of large quantities of very fine material. The first detriment, overgrinding, is costly in itself, but when combined with the second factor it is doubly so. Not only is the fracture of a free particle unnecessary—the fracture of these particles may also make subsequent separation operations difficult, inefficient, and wasteful. It has been pointed out' that if the object of size reduction is to liberate the valuable mineral component of the ore then, ideally, fracture should follow intergranular paths to the exclusion of trans-granular ones. This would result in liberation of the valuable minerals with as little size reduction as possible. This ideal comminution operation is referred to as intergranular comminution, and it was the object of the investigation to determine the extent to which it could be developed by heat treatments. There are many indications in the literature that heating rocks prior to crushing may be favorable. Reports by Holman,2 Yates3 and Myers' are pertinent. These investigators showed that heating certain rocks prior to crushing them did, in fact, improve their crushing characteristics in that fewer fines were produced, although the fact that intergranular comminution was being effected apparently was overlooked. In addition, Sosman noted that if there is appreciable anisotropism in the thermal coefficients of expansion of even a pure mineral, then considerable permanent separation of the grains of the rock can be expected as a result of heating the rock to a high temperature.' By the same token, if there are ap- preciable differences in the thermal expansion coefficients of the various minerals of a multi-component rock, similar results should be obtained by heating this rock. This has been tested, partially, by Brenner," who obtained patents covering the heat treatment of some pegmatitic rocks in order to facilitate comminution of these materials. It has also been demonstrated that this may occur in taconite." Also, the possibility of causing decomposition of one mineral in a rock as a means of promoting intergranular fracture has been considered. Seigle2 and Schiffman et al. have obtained patents on such processes as applied to calcareous iron ores. These reports all indicate that heat treatments prior to crushing may contribute materially to intergranular comminution, but they also indicate that no organized attempt has been made to determine the controlling factors of the method or to determine its applicability in general. The present article is a report on the initial phase of such an investigation. The authors have reviewed the claims of prior investigators and have attempted, also, to establish the factors that might determine the applicability of heat treatments in the mineral industry. In this work 2000-g samples of various rocks were heated in a small laboratory furnace and crushing and sizing operations were carried out in standard laboratory equipment. All samples of each rock were as nearly identical as possible in particle size, grain size, and composition and contained only lumps coarse enough to contain many grains each. Tests on Granite A number of tests were made on a coarse grained Finnish granite obtained in the form of coarse chips from a local monument yard. This rock exhibited little variation from piece to piece in either composition or grain size. The minerals contained were quartz, orthoclase, small amounts of hornblende, and minute quantities of mica. Grain size ranged from about 1 mm to about 3 mm. Temperature of the Heat Treatment: In some cases the granite was heated to a particular temperature and crushed, hot, immediately upon withdrawal from the furnace—in others the rock was allowed to cool before crushing, but without quenching to room temperature after heating. In most tests on granite the heating period was about 2 hr with the furnace at the highest temperature for about 1 hr. Cases in which these periods were varied greatly will be presented separately.

"This paper will describe the methods and the results of studies to integrate polymetallic nodule extractive metallurgy methods into existing and operating technologies or plants with the aim of reducing the capital cost of deep-sea mining challenges and to streamline the supply chain of raw materials where such opportunities exist (Moa Bay and others). It will also assess the possibility to carry out pre-industrial processing operations with productivity corresponding to pilot mining operation in the Clarion Clipperton Fracture Zone (5–10% of assumed annual production) with the use of existing facilities. The present study shows the results of high pressure acid leaching of polymetallic nodules (PN) mixed with laterite non-commercial ore. It also presents PN processing in the presence of ammoniacal tailings obtained from the Caron process. The experiments were carried out according to 24 full factorial design. The regression equations were determined for extractions of Ni, Co, Cu, Zn, Fe and Mn. The obtained results show that increasing temperature, the acid/ mineral ratio and the leaching time have a positive and significant effect on extraction of all the studied metals. However, increasing the tailings addition favors the extraction of the Co, Zn and Mn. The extraction of Fe diminishes, while the extraction of Ni is not affected. In the following conditions; 180 min, 260°C, 0.5 kg acid /kg minerals and 2.5 kg PN/kg tailing; the following extractions were achieved; 96% Ni, 90% Co, 97% Cu, 99.9% Zn, 43% Mn and 26% Fe."

The quarrying and related industries of the United States improved their safety record in 1938 by reducing their accident-frequency rate to a lower acid more favorable position than it has occupied at any time except 1935 since comparable accident statistics became available in 1916. The rates for 1935 and 1938 were identical. The number of men employed in 1938, although smaller than in 1936 and 1937, was larger than in any other year since 1930. Volume of employment, as measured by the number of man-hours worked in the industry as a; whole, likewise was larger than in any year since 1930 except 1936 and 1937. Reports from operating companies to the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, showed that 77,497 men were employed in 1938, a decrease of 6,597 compared with 1937. This figure represents the average number of employees for the period during which the quarries and plants were active during the year, which in 1938 averaged 223 workdays per employee compared with 241 in 1937. A total of 17.3 million man-days or 133.8 million man-hours of work was shown for the industry as a whole, which indicated a weighted average of 7.75 hours per man-shift. Reports for 1937 showed a total of 158.3 million man-hours for the entire industry and an average workday of 7.81 hours. Accidents resulted in the death of 82 employees, 5 more than in 1937, and in 5,027 nonfatal injuries involving disability for more than the remainder of the day on which the injuries were received. The number of nonfatal injuries was 1,321 less than in 1937. As the number of deaths and injuries was reduced more, proportionately, than man-hours of employment, the accident-frequency rate per million man-hours of work declined, the rate for 1938 being 38.19 compared with 40.59 for 1937. In other words, accident occurrence to the average employee was 6 percent more favorable in 1938 than in 1937 on the basis of actual number of accidents and actual number of man-hours worked during the 2 years.

The following is a description of the methods employed at the Eureka-Asteroid mine, which is situated on the Gogebic range, at Ramsey, Mich. The mime is operated by the Castile Mining Co. under the direction of Oglebay Norton & Co. This paper has been prepared in accordance with an outline furbished by the United States Bureau of Mines, and in one of a series, on mining methods and costs covering the principal minim operations throughout the United States. "Photocatalysis utilizes solar energy to produce hydrogen by splitting H2O. When a thin film of photocatalyst TiO2 is supported on a ferroelectric BiFeO3 substrate (band gap ~2.5 eV), the TiO2/BiFeO3 heterostructure is capable of photochemically reducing Ag+ to Ag0 in aqueous solutions under blue light with enhanced efficiency. The observation of spatially selective silver patterns on surface of the heterostructure after reaction suggests that photogenerated electrons and holes in ferroelectric BiFeO3 are driven in opposite directions to reduce their chance of recombination. Comparisons of the amounts of reduced silver on TiO2 film grains with distinct phases/orientations show that the reactivity is mildly preferential on anatase TiO2 phase and does not strongly depend on crystallographic orientation of BiFeO3.IntroductionTitania (TiO2) is capable of photocatalytically converting H2O to hydrogen and oxygen under the irradiation of ultraviolet light. [1, 2] One of the limiting factors for titania to be used as an effective photocatalyst is its band gap. Because the absorption edges of rutile and anatase titania are at 3.0 eV and 3.2 eV, respectively, they can only absorb light in the UV portion of the spectrum, which is about 3% of the available solar energy. [3-5] This limitation has motivated attempts to modify the absorption edge of titania so that it can absorb visible light.One strategy is to substitute a portion of the titanium and/or the oxygen with other atoms. There are numerous reports on visible light absorption of titania by doping and co-doping of Cr, V, Mo, Sb, Fe, N, S, C, and F. [6-34] Another strategy is to add an adsorbed molecular species that absorb visible light and donate an electron or hole to the titania, such as organic dyes [33, 35, 36] and Ce3+/Ce4+. [37, 38]The strategy in the present work takes the approach of depositing a pure titania thin film on a visible light absorbing substrate BiFeO3 to induce visible light activity of the heterostructure. BiFeO3 is a semiconductor with a band gap of about 2.5 eV [39-41] and is photocatalytically active in visible light. [42, 43] It is also ferroelectric with spontaneous polarization along pseudo-cubic <111> directions of 6.1 µC cm-2. [44] The spontaneous polarization gives rise to internal electric fields that drive photogenerated charge carriers, namely electrons and holes, in opposite directions to reduce their chance of recombination. [45-47] Additionally, the separation of electrons and holes leads to the spatial separation of reduction and oxidation half reactions so that the back reaction of intermediates is also suppressed. Such charge carrier separation has been reported in TiO2/BaTiO3 heterostructures with UV light illumination. [48-51] The TiO2/BiFeO3 heterostructures in this work combine both advantages of the relatively narrow band gap and the internal fields in BiFeO3 to enhance the overall photocatalytic activity."

With the current trends of increasing costs and decreasing head grades the mineral industry is no longer operating in very high profit areas and has been forced to pay greater attention to the application of modern technology. Although here are many technological advances to the credit of the industry in recent years there are still many processes being operated in the traditional manner and still many areas awaiting the application of methods which have been proven in other industries. Compared with the chemical industry the mineral industry is seriously ageing in the general areas of process analysis and process control, more so than can be justified by the complications arising from having to deal with particulate systems with properties far different from ideal, or even non-ideal, liquid systems. One area in which there has been a remarkable lack of application in the Mineral industry is that of analog computation and the authors feel that there is considerable scope for the use of the analog computer in studying mineral industry processes. The paper outlines the basic principles and features of the analog computer and describes its role as a simulation tool in some engineering and mineral processing systems.

This paper discusses equipment replacement strategies and specifically addresses the upgrading of technologically superseded equipment. The process of equipment replacement evaluations is reviewed, and areas have been highlighted where currently accepted practice results in a bias towards retaining existing equipment longer than otherwise justified. The Discounted Average Cost Method is described and the advantages of the technique for this style of decision making discussed. Several key issues influencing the replacement evaluation are also presented together with examples from recent consulting work.

The advent of Nuclear Energy has caused a phenomenal growth in the uranium mining industry. To keep abreast of this surge the mining industry has located many ore bodies, determined the best types of mining adaptable to this particular type of ore and developed a highly specialized type of operation. But, has the mining industry gone far enough in the planning? Has ?built-in? safety been included in the efficient methods of operation? Preplanning safety in the mining industry, as in all industries, takes engineering and ingenuity combined with the experience and cooperation of all concerned. A system of mining can be planned on a map and it will look good. However, when the actual mining takes place, conditions may be such that deviations from the original plans may be required because of excessive water faults or other conditions encountered. With safety we may also be required to change, to conform to the characteristics of a particular operation. People in the mining industry are well aware that loose back has killed miners each year. This condition occurred in practically all types of mines. The condition is not new to us. It is also known that explosives, haulage, machinery and conditions common to all types of mining have taken a heavy toll of human life in mining. In addition to these hazards in the uranium mines, the hazard of radon is also present, Radon is a radioactive gas liberated from ores containing radium. This gas is released into the active workings by the blasting or breaking up of the ore. Sometimes it is caused by radium contaminated water seepage from abandoned workings or from the ore body itself. Until the action of this gas on the human was known, many miners were affected. Un- less adequate precuations are taken to protect the people in these mines,, they may be exposed to this hazard, Health researchers made a study of this substance to determine how it would affect the health of the men, They also studied men who had worked in previous years, in mines known to have contained radioactive materials. All of this research contributed to the present knowledge of radon and its daughter products. It is not flammable nor explosive, but, if allowed to enter the body through the respiratory organs it can cause serious damage. Mines have been operated in the past and are still being operated, which were known to contain explosive and noxious gases, indicating that this problem can be controlled. Several states have instituted laws that make it mandatory to provide adequate ventilation and use of monitoring devices to limit radon and its daughter products to a maximum of 300 micro-microcuries per liter of air. This is considered a safe limit for sustained periods of human exposure. While the findings of research do not prove conclusively that the inhalation of excessive radon or its daugher products cause lung cancer, indications point to this as a possibility, particularly radium A and radium C1 of the daughter products. The threshold limits set by law in most uranium producing states are believed to be safe. In a few years, when tests and data now in the process of collection by interested state officials and laboratories is complete, these limits may be found to be ready for revision. Studies such as these take time. At present, the limits that are used are based upon estimates. The permissible limits of exposure to radon and daughter products include a large safety factor. It is considered that a good supply of fresh air delivered to the working places, adequate dust control, the sealing of unused or abandoned workings, the removal of mine water which is generally contaminated and a safe waiting period after blasting, will hold to a minimum the dangers from this source. There are, of course, problems accompanying each of these procedures. For example, the ventilating of untimbered raises and bringing fresh, uncontaminated air to the working places may be a problem. However, a good mining man can solve these problems as they apply in each particular operation. From the information available at the present time, the daughter products containing polonium and emitting alpha radiation, may be a health hazard. Fortunately, the half life of most of the daughter products is short, however, radium D has a half life of 22 years and presents a problem of contamination in the storage of old tailings. So we can see that failure to comply with the accepted good mining practices may have harmful effects on the health of miners. It is gratifying to note the interest in this potential hazard by the officials in the uranium ore producing states, who are making extensive studies and keeping records of the men who work in this type of mining. This all provide information necessary for preplanning safety. By contrast, little has been accomplished to control the injuries and deaths from some other factors connected with most underground mining operations. Installation of a horizontal air blocking shelf around the inside perimeter of the surface mining drill deck shroud is proposed to improve dust capture. Without the use of this shelf, a strong coanda effect airflow pattern results in dust leakage to the environment, especially at the shroud-to-ground interface. Bailing air exits the drill hole and travels along the drill steel to the underside of the table, where it fans out across the bottom of the drill table and continues down the sides of the shroud. This dust-laden bailing air then strikes the ground and fans out under gaps between the shroud and the ground. The proposed shelf prevents dust-laden air from striking the ground by redirecting it toward the center of the enclosure, where it can be captured. Laboratory tests demonstrated that the shelf reduced dust levels outside of the shroud by 81% under operating conditions consisting of a 1.9:1 collector to bailing airflow ratio, and a 5.1-cm (2-in) gap between the shroud and ground. The shelf was 15.2-cm (6-in) wide and located at a height equal to 2/3 the distance measured from the bottom of the shroud to the bottom of the drill table. The air blocking shelf was also capable of overcoming the adverse impact of vertical leakage along the shroud seams as long as this leakage was confined to an area below the horizontal plane defined by the shelf location.

(New York Meeting, February, 1919.) DURING the summer of 1911, I had the opportunity to study in detail the geological conditions of what is known in northern California as " Harrison gulch," in Shasta county. Though the district, as a whole, that is, the western part of Shasta and the eastern part of Trinity county, has contributed during the last 15 years a considerable share of the gold-production credited to Shasta county, very little is known of its geology, perhaps because the country is covered with a dense growth of brush which makes exploration and prospecting extremely difficult. Topographically the district presents a succession of ridges trending approximately N-S.; and alternating with deep narrow canyons. The drainage is partly into . the Sacramento, partly into the Trinity river. Climatic conditions in summer time are almost ideal. It is true, the thermometer may climb to 115°, but the air is dry and the heat is bearable, especially as the nights are always cool. It seldom rains during the summer months, and creeks and springs dry out towards the end of the summer. The winter is severe, lasting from November to April, and usually a thick layer of snow covers the mountains. By reason of the character of its gold-deposits, the region is known to miners as "the pocket country." It contains a series ?of eruptive rocks intruded into slates, cherts, limestones, and conglomerates. Dikes, laccoliths, and batholiths are frequent. In a day&apos;s ride it is possible to find all the common igneous rocks from the very acid to the very basic. Serpentines are especially abundant.. The sedimentary rocks are, as rule, broken and shattered as well as folded, and show the effects of intense metamorphism. ? Pocket-hunters " speak of the contact of diabase and slate as the ? pocket-contact." Some rich gold-pockets, however, have also been found in the diabase.

Successful relationships between mining companies and local stakeholders are now an essential part of the social contract of “doing business” (Prescott, 1995). The methodology presented in this paper is designed to assist mining companies in understanding and building relationships with diverse stakeholder groups. The methodology starts by recognizing that mining projects have a natural life cycle which can be used to identify when new external affairs strategies are required. In designing an external affairs strategy, the first step is to set objectives that are compatible with the overall objectives of the mining project. The management team then identifies the main stakeholder groups and seeks to understand the priorities and inter-relationships of the individual stakeholders. The result of this stakeholder analysis is an understanding of the Degrees of Influence of each of the stakeholder groups along with a relationship map which illustrates the strong interactions between stakeholders. The company is then prepared to take a proactive approach to building relationships with the primary stakeholders. This methodology was developed by BHP to assist with the federal government environmental approval process for the development of Canada’s first diamond mine. BHP has successfully used the methodology in three different phases of the NWT Diamonds Project and is now applying the methodology to mining and development projects around the world.

There have been very few attempts to isolate the various factors that contribute to the overall imprecision of geochemical analytical procedures, due in part to the difficulty of distinguishing between them. The technique of spark source mass spectrography permits a ready distinction between the contributions to overall precision from sampling error and instrumental and other errors. With conventional methods of sample preparation for this technique sampling difficulties are responsible for 80-90 per cent of the overall imprecision. Examination of the probable location of the major difficulties in sample preparation indicates that the preliminary stage of grinding, mixing and extraction of a first aliquot (about 1/100 of the original sample) is generally perfectly adequate. The difficulty lies in the subsequent stages of sample preparation. Dry mixing techniques are unlikely to give good precision if the sub-samples actually examined by the analytical technique are less than 10 mg in amount. Solution techniques are less prone to sampling difficulty. Fusion techniques, unless conducted with great care, can produce more difficulty than dry mixing. Sample preparation is critical to the success of many analytical procedures. Selection of appropriate sample preparation techniques requires just as much care as the selection of techniques for the actual analysis.

During the testing of porcelain insulators with a " 60 - cycle flash - over apparatus " , gases are liberated having an odor greatly resembling that of ozone . Since the two main constituents of normal air are nitrogen and oxygen , and high voltages (approximately 90,000 volts ) are used during the tests , the conditions are favorable for the production of ozone or oxides of nitrogen , and perhaps both simultaneously . The presence of these gases is only noticeable during the testing period . They soon disappear after the test is over . No fatalities have ever resulted from these gases at the plant visited nor are there any records of any of the men who worked on the tests being confined to their homes from this cause . New employees sometimes complain of a depressed feeling and shortness of breath , which is most noticeable after leaving work and getting into fresh air , but they som become accustomed to it and no ill effects are noticed . In view of previous work*** which the Bureau of Mines has done on oxides of nitrogen in connection with mine gases and problems in gas analysis , tests were made at the plant of the Westinghouse High Voltage Insulator Company at Derry , Pa . to determine the kind and amount of gases liberated .

The selection and implementation of the right technology for a project is critical to the future development of the resource industry. It is essential for companies to ensure ongoing competitive viability that where practical new or alternative technology be adopted. Analysis of historical data relating to development of resource-based process plants provides an enlightening insight into the key factors which influence their success or failure. The adoption of new technology does not guarantee the success of a project. The outcomes of this analysis have been used to develop some general guidelines and principles the author believes are useful in the selection and implementation of new or alternative technology in resource projects. One of the challenges of mining is the concentration of heavy metals it releases into the environment through a phenomenon called Acid Mine Drainage. Freiberg is no exception due to its long mining activities. The European Union proposes that all rivers and streams must be in a good ecological status by the year 2027 but this would be difficult for large water sources as it would be economically unviable. Consequently, the approach of treating these waters at point sources would be of immense help and hence this column experiment on mine water treatment with carbon sorbents to remove zinc form the Rothschönberger Stolln. For this experiment three resins namely, APTsorb, activated coke, charred fermentation residues (which was produced by the Freiberg University of Mining and Technology) were analyzed through a simple column experiment to determine their sorption capacities. Through their sorption capacity as this experiment seeks to ascertain: we are able to make suggestions scientifically on the best material among the three for the future design of a treatment plant for the RSS. After the experiment whereby a 10 ml peri glass column was used, material A: APTsorb showed the least adsorption capacity (0.01 meq/g) and this could be attributed to the fact that the resin works well under pre-determined parameters such as pH and surface area. Material B: Activated coke showed a better sorption capacity (0.53 meq/g) in comparison to the basis value used for this experiment. Material C: charred fermentation residue which was produced by the University showed the most efficient capacity of (1.69 meq/g). This in comparison with the value used as the basis for this experiment showed that material C (charred fermentation residue) is very efficient for zinc sorption. pH values measured at the effluent of all the experiment were slightly higher than the pH measured in the initiating water.

I am disturbed by- the confusion that now passes for policy. I am disturbed by the short- range view of critical problems taken by a majority of Governments. I am equally disturbed by the even shorter range of view taken by a growing army of industries. Many of them clamour for Governments to solve their problems in a specific way, with little regard for any other sector but their own-and with even less regard for the fact that every time a Government takes over some of their responsibilities they surrender some of their freedom. I would not say that longer range views don&apos;t exist. But I would say that they don&apos;t prevail at the present time. Instead, we are seeing the constant development of many policies for individual problems which don&apos;t tackle the fundamental causes. We must get back to basics without delay.

"In China, approximately 65% of coal reserves are in the west region, where water shortage is a serious problem: high-efficiency dry coal beneficiation technology is desired. Using magnetic powder and fine coal as heavy medium, and using air as the fluidizing agent, a novel air dense medium fluidized bed separator is proposed for coal preparation. Coal can be efficiently separated according to density in the fluidized bed, where bed density is steady. The separator is highly reliable, the circulation quantity of heavy medium is low, and the gas distributor cannot be easily easily. The world’s first industrial modularized dry coal preparation plant was built by China University of Mining and Technology. Dry coal beneficiation technology was first used to produce low-ash coal. Results of industrial production show that the ash content of clean coal is 3.46%, the probable error E value is 0.055 g/cm3, and the organic efficiency is over 90%. The advantages of the modularized dry coal beneficiation system are the high separation accuracy, the simple process flow, the low operation cost, low energy consumption, and so on. This technology provides a new effective method for coal separation in acid region and coal tending to sliming.INTRODUCTIONCoal is the most important primary energy source in China, where coal output reached 3.68 billion tons in 2013 and represents approximately 68% of the primary energy consumption. Coal has made a great contribution to the development of the Chinese national economy, but it also brings serious environmental pollution. However, approximately 65% of coal reserves are in the arid west region in China where water shortages present a challenge for wet coal preparation technology. In addition, the abundant lignite resource, because it is easy to mud in the water, should not be treated with the wet separation method. Therefore, it is critical to develop highly efficient dry coal preparation technology to meet the demand in arid areas. Further, water resource shortages are a global problem, thus the development of efficient dry coal preparation technology in has potential application in other water-short countries like South Africa, Brazil, India and Turkey."

An investigation was initiated to obtain the scope of the problems associated with recycling various waste oxide materials generated at Inland Steel and to identify and? test techniques that could possibly aid in increasing the amount of waste oxide materials recycled to primary. operations. Based on the results of this work, several new techniques were developed ?and tested on ?a plant or laboratory scale. These include the use of cold-bond agglomeration methods for producing waste oxide agglomerates for use as a cooling agent or scrap substitute in steelmaking operations, and the use of various techniques for beneficiating blast furnace flue dust and soaking pit rubble so that the upgraded materials can be utilized in sinter plant or ironmaking operations. The physical and chemical characteristics of the waste oxide materials and the results of the laboratory and plant testing are discussed in this paper.
