Mining camps can be divided roughly into two types-the large, opulent settlement that blooms like the rose about a strong mine in full operation; and the puny group of adobe huts, or calamina shacks, or even canvas tents flung down in the wilderness to shelter the gay pioneers of a shining prospect or the shattered survivors of a lost hope. Of the first, I know nothing; but in the second, I have spent some of my best years, and from its curious code of morals and manners, its comic hates and its unreasoning loves, its high impatience and its engulfing kindness, I have charted the narrow .and pitted path which must be trod by the woman who would success¬fully live therein.

Several infrastructure projects are under construction in India; many of them involves construction of deep foundations like reinforced concrete and steel piles to support super structures. As most of the piles being constructed in India are reinforced concrete bored piles, there are always uncertainties relating to the quality of construction, and in this case non-destructive methods to ascertain quality of piles becomes very crucial to success of any project. Non-destructive pile testing is becoming more and more popular with growing technologies wherein geophysical techniques and wave propagation theories are being used for pile quality and length analysis. Low-strain pulse echo method and cross-hole sonic logging testing are two pile integrity testing techniques being currently practiced in India which are cost effective and provides reliable near accurate results if analyzed properly. Paper presents current practices being adopted in India for conducting these two tests, highlighting the critical site considerations and analysis techniques. The paper also discusses various execution and interpretation challenges faced by practicing engineers and recommends a way forward.

"The West Toronto Diamond project, under construction since 2006 and due to be complete in 2015, is a rail-to-rail grade separation project in the heart of urban Toronto. Once complete, a depressed corridor over 1000 metres long will take the CN tracks beneath the CPR tracks. An interlocking steel pile wall serves to retain ground and cut off groundwater. Remedial measures, constructed using jet grouting, were required at several locations within and behind the steel piles.At mechanical interlock joints damaged or suspected of being damaged, jet grouting was used to improve native soils on the retained side of the wall to reduce permeability of the soil mass in intimate contact with the joints to 10-7 cm/s. At a number of steel piles where groundwater and soil type combined to cause basal instability inside the pipes during the interim between excavation and concreting, jet grouting was used to construct temporary bottom seals. At locations near adjacent structures where the steel pile installation process resulted in disturbed ground on the retained side of the wall, jet grouting was used to strengthen and stabilize ground.This paper outlines the details of the various jet grouting applications, the respective testing programs implemented to demonstrate in situ permeability and strength of the soil-grout matrix, and performance of the constructed system.INTRODUCTIONThe West Toronto Diamond (WTD) is a junction of several railway lines, all intersecting at the same grade (Figure 1). A major grade separation project at this site commenced in 2006 and is scheduled to be completed in 2015. The whole of the work is comprised of multiple contracts, completed and/or ongoing, by different constructors. Once completed, a depressed corridor over 1000 metres long with over 23,500 m2 (face area) of retained earth will bring the CN tracks beneath the CPR tracks and eliminate a major bottleneck at the most heavily used rail crossing in Canada."

THERE are three active mines in the Chewelah-Colville district, the United Silver Copper near Chewelah, and the Old Dominion and the Chloride Queen near Colville. The Admiral near Valley is also doing development work. The Chewelah district is in the south central part of Stevens County in the Colville Valley. Chewelah, a thriving town of 1600 people, and the scene of operations of the Northwest Magnesite Co., is about the center of the district. It is situated in a farming community on the Spokane-Nelson branch of the Great Northern railway, about 65 miles north of Spokane. Only two or three of the mines in the district have been extensively developed, although many have been prospected. The general elevation of the valley, is about 1600 or 1700 ft., that of the mountain ranges on each side about 3000 to 4000 ft., with gentle slopes and rounded glaciated tops. Prospecting is often difficult because of much glacial debris.

The ISASMELT? process is recognized worldwide as a modem, flexible, environmentally-friendly and low capital cost smelting technology. Due to the inherent simplicity, and the advanced process control that has been developed, personnel become competent within weeks of being introduced to the ISASMELT? technology. This compares with the years required to become proficient with alternative technologies. Copper smelters in Australia, USA, India, China, Peru and Zambia have installed ISASMELT? technology under licence from Xstrata Technology. In the secondary copper business, plants in Belgium and Germany are processing copper and/or lead materials in ISASMELT? furnaces in a two stage process. In a single furnace smelting is followed by converting. Both plants have exceeded design capacities and are continuously improving their performance. The next evolutionary step for the technology is the implementation of the continuous copper converting process on a commercial scale. The present work describes the design status of the continuous converting process - ISACONVERT?.

Dynamic measurements of Young's modulus have been made for poly crystalline Ni-W alloys from room temperature to 800°C. The alloys studied range in composition from pure nickel to Ni-10 at. pct W. The results indicate that Young's modulus decreases linearly with temperature above the Curie temperature. The rate of change of Young's Modulus with temperature mas found to range from 104 psi per "C for pure nickel to 0.82 x 104 psi per °C for Mi-10 pct W. At all temperatures the elastic modulus decreases with increcrsing tungsten content up to 1 at. pct W, and increases as the tungsten content is increased above that level. Young's modulus decreases slightly as the carbon content is increased from 0.002 to 0.09 wt pct C THE knowledge of the elastic modulus of metals and alloys is important for a number of reasons. The first and most obvious reason comes from the need to predict elastic deflections under given loading conditions. A second and somewhat more subtle reason comes from the fact that the elastic properties of an alloy must be known before a proper account of the mechanisms of plastic deformation can be made. This is especially true for high-temperature creep of crystalline solids. Sherby and his coworkers have shown that the high-temperature steady-state creep rates of crystalline solids are inversely related to the elastic modulus1,2 and that the temperature dependence of the elastic modulus must be taken into account if reliable determinations of the activation energy for creep are to be made. In addition, measurements of the elastic constants of solid solutions are needed to allow one to assess the modulus interaction contribution to solid-solution Strengthening.3-5 Pelloux and Grant6 have demonstrated that substantial solid-solution strengthening at room temperature and elevated temperatures occurs when refractory metal solute atoms are added to nickel. While the high-temperature elastic properties of pure nickel have been measured by a number of authors,7-10 the elastic properties of nickel-based refractory metal alloys have not been determined. The purpose of this paper is to report on measurements of Young's modulus of polycrystalline Ni-W alloys at elevated temperatures. It is expected that these measurements will be valuable to studies of the mechanical properties of nickel-based refractory metal solid solutions. I) EXPERIMENTAL Young's moduli of polycrystalline samples were determined by a dynamic method in order to reduce high- temperature anelastic and plastic relaxations. The samples were forced in transverse free-free vibration; that is, both ends of the sample were unrestrained and the vibration was transverse to the long axis. The fundamental resonant frequency was determined by the Forster method.11 The analysis of this type of vibration which was formulated by Rayleigh,12 Timo-chenko,13 and pickett,14 and reviewed by Fine," leads where fn is the resonant frequency of the nth mode, r is the radius of the circular cross section. L is the specimen length, ßn is 1.5056 for free-free vibration in the fundamental mode of vibration, 6 is the mass density, and E is Young's modulus in the axial direction. This equation can be transformed into: E = 9.17605 x 10-6(L/D)E/Lf2 [2] where E is Young's modulus in psi, L is the length in inches, d is the diameter in inches, W is the weight in grams, and f is the resonance frequency in cps. Eq. [2] was further modified in order to take account of the thermal expansion of the samples. The resulting correct term is: where the thermal expansion coefficients for nickel and tungsten, respectively. Xw is the atom fraction of tungsten in the sample and T is the temperature in "C. The treatment of the thermal expansion coefficient as a linear function of composition seems sufficiently accurate since an error of 25 pct in the expansion coefficient will result in only a 0.3 pct error in the modulus at 1000°C. A) Apparatus. The equipment for this investigation has been described by Lytton et al.16 Several modifications of the equipment have been made. The most significant change involved replacing the detector crystal transducer with a magnetic transducer. A phonographic magnetic transducer was employed as a sensing device since the contact pressure necessary to produce a stable signal is much less than that for a crystal transducer. This magnetic transducer is also not affected by conditions of high temperature and vacuum which are present in these experiments. The vacuum was 10-5 torr at room temperature and about 5 x 10-4 torr at 900°C. This was sufficient to prevent surface contamination of the samples during the tests. The United States is dependent on foreign imports for about 80 percent of its ilmenite, about 60 percent of its rutile, and virtually all of its monazite. Nearshore marine sand deposits and beach-complex sediments in the southeastern United States are important domestic sources of ilmenite, leucoxene, rutile, zircon, monazite, and a number of other less well known economic heavy-mineral (HM) species. Because global onshore reserves of placer titanium minerals may fall short of demand in as few as 20 years, offshore research in HM placers will become more important. The Atlantic Continental Shelf (ACS) defined by the shoreline and the 200-m isobath varies in width for the modern U.S. coastline from a fraction of a kilometer to about 150 km offshore of Cape Cod, Mass., and includes an area of about 3.91 x 105 km2. It probably contains 3-7 x 1011 m3 of sand and gravel which may locally contain commercially exploitable placer HM deposits.

The Piquette Mining and Milling Co, operates a zinc mine and concentrating mill in the Upper Mississippi Valley zinc-lead district near Tennyson, Wis. The principal ore mineral is zinc sulfide, which occurs in limestones and dolomites of the Decorah formation. Exploration in the district is by churn drilling from the surface. An adit at the base of the ore zone provides access to the mine. A room-and- pillar mining method with irregular pillars is used. Drilling is done with Jumbo-mounted drills. The broken ore is loaded by crawler-mounted front-end loaders into diesel-powered trucks for haulage direct to the mill.

Cia. Vale do Rio Doce is currently developing Niquel do Vermelho Project. The laterite deposit is located at Carajas Mineral Province at less than 15 km from Sossego Copper Project, scheduled for start-up in 2004. The available infrastructure, includes paved roads, large capacity railroad and port complex owned by CVRD, power supply and good quality water. The project was evaluated in the past for ferronickel production. In the late 1990s, CVRD switched its attention to investigating the usage of pressure acid leaching. The combination of good metallurgical behaviour for pressure acid leach (PAL) process route with reasonable mineable grades, and existing infrastructure justified the start of engineering studies in 2002. The project approach at the engineering phase is based on the dual objective of minimizing risks while maximizing project profitability and value. CVRD is currently completing the Niquel do Vermelho prefeasibility study. This paper outlines the main outcomes of the study and future perspectives for the project.

A need developed to establish this training program internationally. The first international training session was held at the APEX San Cristóbal Mine in Bolivia. This paper discusses the program’s development, execution, results, and lessons learned with an emphasis on multicultural environments.

"The development of certain mines in the East Tintic mining district, Utah, has been hindered considerably by the presence in the rock strata of heavy irrespirable gases which at times flood the lowest working places, as well as by abnormally high rock temperatures in the lower horizons. A study of these features was completed in the spring of this year, and the information obtained is summarized here.Heavy gases.Only four mines have been affected to date by the presence of heavy gas, and only one of these is producing lead-silver ores in quantity. These four embrace a territory extending about three miles north and south and about two miles east and west, while both within and fringing on this territory are a number of prospects which have not been affected.Thus far no fatalities have resulted from gas inflows, but a number of men have been temporarily overcome, and a few have had narrow escapes from death by suffocation. That the record is not more serious is mainly due to the fact that the gas inflow, as a rule, is relatively slow, mining operations have been quite carefully conducted, and the presence and extent of a gas inflow can be easily determined by its extinguishing action on the flame of miners' lights.When first encountered, about 1910, gas inflows occasioned much lost time. In some months the lost time averaged as much as ten days, while one mine cites for a certain month a maximum of 26 days lost out of a possible 28 working days. With improvements in mechanical ventilation and the passing of time, interference with work from the presence of gas has gradually lessened. During the last few winters, the main trouble has been with the mines being flooded with gas overnight when fans were not operated, although men have been driven out of the lowest development openings several times each winter with fans operating. At present, the main danger is in the lowest development openings having only one exit, wherein men might be trapped and possibly suffocated during an unusual and extremely rapid inflow of gas, or during an ordinary inflow, should the one source of power for the fan be disabled."

Although copper ranks very low in the order of abundance of elements in the crust of the earth, it has been one of the first metals utilized by mar, at his emergence from the Stone Age, about 10,000 years ago. Use of copper for weapons, tools, utensils and ornaments dates back to the twilight of history, 6,000-5,000 B.C. Native copper outcrops and the malleability of the metal explain its very early use by the cave-dwellers. The working, melting and extraction of copper from its minerals are among the oldest metallurgical achievements of the human race. The oldest complete smelting installations for the extraction of copper from its minerals, dated about the fourth millenium B.C., were recently discovered in the Timna Valley, Wadi Arabah, Israel. (1) The history of the developments of the extractive metallurgy of copper has been adequately reviewed recently. (2,3) The center of copper production migrated from the Eastern Mediterranean to Northern Europe (Mansfeld, Germany, Swansea, Wales) towards the end of the Middle Ages (1500 A.D.). The production of the metal was boosted tremendously in North America since the end of the nineteenth century (Fig. 1).

The Aroostook manganese-bearing deposits lie within a rectangle 30 miles wide and 70 miles long. Over 40 different deposits have been discovered in this area, but they have not been mined because the ores are difficult to treat. In 1949, the Maple Mountain area was selected for detailed investigation by the Bureau of Mines, because study by the State of Maine and the Federal Geological Survey indicated that it was the most promising in Aroostook County for developing a large tonnage of reserves. Investigation by the Bureau of Mines disclosed that all of the reported deposits of the central district were located on the limbs of a syncline underlying a pear-shaped area of 283 acres between the crests of Maple Mountain and Hovey Mountain. The ore area has been outlined by trenching and drilling along three sides of the perimeter, while the remaining side is defined by a fault. The area has a length of 6,300 feet and a maximum width of 3,100 feet. Diamond-drill holes have intersected the deposit as deep as 1,550 feet below surface, but additional deep drilling would be required to determine the intensity of folding or warping at depth. The Maple Mountain-Hovey Mountain deposit lies in the slates of Ordovician age and is classified into three zones, of which the upper, averaging about 57 feet thick, is designated manganiferous purple and red slate. The central zone, also averaging about 57 feet thick and containing the highest manganese content, is manganiferous, banded hematite. The lower zone is manganiferous, interbedded hematitic and green slate with an average width of about 33 feet. Manganese minerals occur with hematite in all three units. Trenching on the northwestern slope of Hovey Mountain uncovered other disconnected deposits of manganiferous rocks of earlier age than the ore of the syncline. The general strike of these deposits, which range from 15 feet to 75 feet in thickness, is southwest a length of 5,000 feet. They dip steeply southeast. The ore of the syncline is predominantly deep, hematitic red, inclining to red-dish black, fine-grained, dense, and thinly laminated. It is hard and siliceous. Hematite has, in places, been altered to magnetite. Because of the fine-grained texture of the ore, the manganese-mineral constituents are difficult to determine. Of the manganese silicates present, braunite is the most readily identified. Manganese carbonates and oxides are found also.

Silicon dioxide, silica, is the most common oxide in the earth' s crust. The health effects of silicon dioxide dust have been known since Biblical times. Agricola's book, published in the mid 1500's on occupational medicine, described a lung disease that afflicted miners. He observed a disease in miners that caused shortness of breath, coughing and wasting. Add fever, chest pains and fatigue and we have the current symptom complex of silicosis. As we approached the 21stcentury, the Labor Department began an aggressive campaign to combat silicosis-a preventable disease. Unfortunately, many publications do not clearly differentiate the polymorphs of silica known to mineralogists. Crystalline silica, i.e., alpha quartz, tridymite and cristobalite need to be considered differently from the amorphous forms of silica. Freshly fractured surfaces of the silica and host specific responses will be examined. Recent research focuses on the biologic interactions of free radicals generated by mineral particles. This results in cell injury and DNA damage, in turn leading to fibrogenesis and possibly carcinogenesis. In addition to particle-cell interactions, emphasis is given to lung defense mechanisms.

Ground calcium carbonate (GCC) is used in the paper, plastics, paint, rubber, caulks, and sealants industries. The favorable properties of GCC include high whiteness and brightness, low hardness, and outstanding rheology in water systems. The quality of calcitic GCC ores, which include chalk, limestone, and marble, is dependent on calcite purity and the nature and quantity of ancillary minerals. Wet and dry grinding is used in the manufacture of GCC. Ore processed by optical sorting, flotation, and/or particle size classification has higher brightness and lower abrasion. GCC markets are a function of the product's properties, purity, and cost.

THE increased use of heat-resistant alloys (26 per cent Cr, 12 per cent Ni; 16 per cent Cr, 35 per cent Ni; 12 per cent Cr, 60 per cent Ni; etc.) in recent years has been accompanied by continued demands by the consumer for improvement in properties. The manufacturers of these materials, of necessity, have resorted to more critical studies of the basic causes of variations in fundamental properties. To keep pace with the need for augmented information, previous techniques of investigation have been refined and new test methods and instruments created. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the apparatus, experimental technique and precision of measurement that were employed in the exploration of properties of heat-resistant alloy presented in a companion paper.? The detailed precautions in experimental procedure essential for attainment of accurate and comparable data at elevated temperatures cannot be too highly emphasized. THE CREEP TEST Since the fundamental concepts of creep testing have been recognized for the past 20 years, present interest is restricted to refinements in equipment and experimental procedure. The creep-test laboratory constructed for the American Brake Shoe and Foundry Co. is designed to permit 1000-hr. tests in the temperature range of 1200° to 2200°F. with a choice of applied stress extending from 50 to 50,000 lb. per sq. in. in increments of 50 lb. per sq. in. To simplify the calculation of weight combinations, the loading beams (Fig. I) are provided with counterweights to eliminate the tare. The precision of the knife-edges (10.1 ratio) is such that a 10-gram weight placed on the upper specimen grip will be exactly balanced by a 1-gram weight attached to the loading shackle. Check of the loading weights proved the maximum error to be 0.06 per cent. Axial alignment is provided by crossed knife-edges in the grip seats. The furnaces are similar in design to those of Crane and Company, Battelle Memorial Institute, and the U.S. Steel Corporation. An 80 per cent Pt, 20 per cent Rh No. 19 B. and S. gauge wire is used as the heating element. The details of construction are shown in the radiograph reproduced in Fig. 2. The windings are held in place on an alundum tube with alundum cement; the distribution of turns is adjusted to give a maximum temperature gradient of ± 1°F. over a 4-in. gauge length (Fig. 3). To avoid sharp temperature differentials at the ends of the test section, the length of the furnace is four times the gauge length. An on-line visualization technique and methodology was developed to investigate the role of fine sphalerite (< 10 um) aggregation in flotation. The images of particle aggregates under different operating conditions were recorded and analyzed. The effect of impeller design on particle aggregation was demonstrated. This difference was not mainly due to the energy input into the system, but due to the resultant hydrodynamic conditions created by the impeller and their effect on particle interactions. The recorded image showed that adding fine silica (- 5 um) did not interfere with fine sphalerite aggregation, thereby showing no effect on the sphalerite recovery. Effect of the enlarged aggregate size on increasing flotation recovery was confirmed. Although Malvern Mastersizer produced consistently lower estimates of aggregate size than those by the image analysis, both methods responded to the changes in operating conditions in the similar trend. It was shown from this study that on-line visualization technique is a powerful tool for studying fine particle aggregation and morphology in the context of diagnosis for the flotation separation.

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers are conducting a cross-sectional survey of equipment noise and worker noise exposures in the mining industry. Surface and underground limestone is one commodity recently surveyed. The sound levels of mining and processing equipment were recorded to identify noise sources. Full-shift worker noise exposures were completed to determine the exposure of various occupations. This paper presents the results of the noise research conducted in both underground and surface limestone mines, detailing the equipment likely to cause worker overexposures, and the occupations experiencing overexposures. Implications for worker noise exposure reduction are also reported.

Those connected with mining, prospecting, or mining geology in northern Ontario are familiar with the fact that it is a comparatively unusual thing to have assayed a sample for which the assay report shows no gold. Values of 20 cents to 80 cents per ton, or even higher, are extremely common. Whilst contamination by fluxes, faulty manipulation, or a desire, on the part of the assayer, to sugar-coat the pill for the client, may account for 20 to 40 cent values at times, it is un1ikely that they would a1ways do so. Exonerating the assayer from being necessarily at fault, what can be the cause of such a widespread distribution of gold (and silver) in minute quantities- of a dissemination .that, in the writer&apos;s experience, and so far as he is? aware, is not met with on a simi1ar scale in other parts of the world? Explanations that suggest themselves are, that the dissemination is due: 1. To a very widespread auriferous minera1ization, post-dating (epigenetic) the formation of the rocks in which it occurs. 2. To a general syngenetic distribution of gold in the volcanic rocks of Keewatin age that form so large a part of the sections of northern Ontario that have been prospected.
