In order to reduce the amount of visible, airborne emissions in the Metals Industry, a new Industrial Gas Technology was developed by Air Liquide. This patented technique is called ALECT?, Air Liquide Emission Control Technology. Demonstrations have been conducted for many cutting and lancing operations as well as for hot metal transfer from vessel to vessel. Fume reductions of 90% and greater have been achieved in actual practice. Air Liquide continues to improve the process and the associated control equipment.

"Hecla - Lucky Friday is an underground mine that has been in operation for 75 years and produces from depths over 2.3 kilometers (7,500 ft) below the surface. Technical issues at this depth include high rock temperature and seismicity. The use of new innovative mechanization is being examined for ore production. Principal advantages of mechanization are the reduced exposure of personnel, reduced seismic triggers, and increased efficiency. Lucky Friday has partnered with Atlas Copco to design, build, test, and deploy a mechanical miner for primary ore production. We will discuss the background, concept, development and deployment strategy for a mechanical miner. BACKGROUND The Coeur d’Alene mining district in northern Idaho was first discovered over 130 years ago and has been the most prolific silver producer in the US. The Lucky Friday mine of Hecla Mining Company (Figure 1) is the oldest (76 years) and deepest mine in the district, producing approximately 725 tonne per day (800 tons per day) from narrow, vertical lead-zinc-silver veins. Cut and fill stoping is currently employed at depths to about 2.3 km (7,500 ft) below ground surface, making it one of the three deepest mines in the western hemisphere. The #4 Shaft, a winze collared at approximately 1.8 km (5,900 ft) below surface and extending to a depth of nearly 2.9 km (9,600 ft), was recently completed to exploit the high-grade 30 Vein, whose resource has been identified to at least 3 km (9,700 ft) in depth.As with other deep mines worldwide, a number of challenging engineering issues occur, including: high in situ rock stress, squeezing ground, seismicity, high in situ rock temperature that requires refrigeration, diesel equipment that generates diesel particulate matter (DPM) requiring high ventilation airflow rates, and long travel times for worker transport to mining areas."

"As underground mines increasingly face the challenge of maximising production without losingfocus on safety excellence, the ability to predict the eff ectiveness of mine seals and stoppings andthe identifi cation of defects plays an increasingly important role in mine ventilation management.While technologies for sample testing installed seals provides signifi cant assurance, the difficulty of conducting tests in operational environments, combined with the production impact of destructive testing procedures, has led to the development of a new method for non-destructively testing ventilation control devices (VCDs). This paper addresses the challenges of in situ testing and reviews the approaches previously employed to verify the quality of VCD installations. It then describes a new testing methodology jointly developed by Whitfield Minerals PTY Ltd and Parsons Brinckerhoff (PB) and the range of tests that have been carried out in the laboratory, above ground, at trial underground sites and in active coal mine operations. Although this is a new approach to testing underground VCDs, the method employs recognised testing equipment in a new application. The aim of the new non-destructive technology is to not only verify the thicknessand therefore overpressure rating compliance, of new VCDs, but to allow mine operations t oidentify and locate defects in installed VCDs without causing damage to the material structure.Currently it is difficult, time-consuming and costly to carry out physical sampling and testing ofevery VCD. Therefore, a reliable and accurate means of non-destructively testing concrete andplaster seals in situ will provide substantial operational and safety benefi ts to the underground coal mining industry."

Fragmentation is an important factor for improving downstream processes in mine operations. Six trials have been conducted at the Aitik copper mine to investigate the effect of ultra-short inter-hole delay times, i.e. smaller than 1 ms/m of burden, on fragmentation. Swelling, MWD data, and crusher efficiency were also evaluated for trials. According to the results, the effect of examined short inter-hole delay times, i.e. 0.14 to 0.86 ms/m of burden, on fragmentation was found to be marginal. Delay time of 0.43 ms/m of burden resulted in slightly finer fragmentation and larger swell; however, the effect of short delays was overshadowed by the effect of small variations in specific charge.

This work describes characterization of the performance of the tundish of a six strand continuous casting unit of the Companhia Siderúrgica Belgo Mineira, João Monlevade, Brazil using physical modeling. Permanent and transient conditions, due to ladle metal composition changes are considered. Pulse and step tracer addition techniques are employed to assess the control variables. For transient conditions the degree of inter-mixing and the minimum residence time are determined with a view to optimize the process especially during the grade changes of steel.

"Project-specific optimized tunnel boring machines represent the spearhead of technological progress in tunneling because with their use, very long-lasting, high quality tunnel structures in almost any geology, depth and topography can be produced with a high degree of automation. The mechanized excavation of tunnel structures ensures the greatest possible environmental protection during tunneling itself. Professional, systematic and high quality rebuilds and reuse of already proven equipment also ensures maximum efficiency in the use of materials and energy resources. It offers an enormous potential for a highly optimized environmental balance. Here the manufacturers of tunnel boring machines and their users in particular have a duty to ensure transparent, high quality and binding standards in the entire rebuild cycle and in the refurbishment management of innovative tunneling technology. This paper deals with the comprehensive processes with rebuild levels of tunnel boring machines and highlights some exemplarily implemented projects. 1 INTRODUCTION All over the world, the number of tunnel boring machines (TBM) in which equipment rebuilds from previous projects are re-used has increased over the last few years. This text presents the technical and economical aspects of this market development. It also takes a look at the practical implementation of rebuild measures. The ""ITAtech Guidelines on Rebuilds of Machinery for Mechanized Tunnel Excavation"" from 2015 lay down the requirements that the machine manufacturers must meet. 2 ECONOMICAL AND ECOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF RE-USING COMPONENTS The globalization of the construction sector and the consideration of environmental aspects promote an increased re-use of machines and machine components. Nowadays, large-scale construction projects are often carried out by international joint ventures of several individual companies that are established specifically for this purpose. After the completion of the project, the joint ventures are dissolved and they liquidate their project-specific equipment, such as tunnel boring machines. Today, it is much more uncommon for such machines to remain permanently in the possession of construction companies. Joint ventures offer TBMs on the free market, or they exercise contractually agreed repurchase options with the manufacturer. On the whole, this increases the number of re-usable components or complete tunneling systems available on the market."

Over the years, electric utilities have been faced with declining steam-coal quality, rising coal prices, and increasingly rigid and costly environmental standards. As a result, many utilities are beginning to show an interest in coal cleaning to upgrade coal by improving its heating value and reducing its sulfur content. Among the primary questions that must be answered for these electric utilities is whether the cost of coal cleaning can be offset by the potential cost savings in coal transportation and utilization in power generation. In search of at least a preliminary answer to this question, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) engaged Bechtel to perform a case-by-case economic study to examine the cost effects of using cleaned versus raw coal to fuel new electric power plants. The results of two of the seven cases studied which involved western coals - one from Montana and another from Utah - are reported in this paper. Coal cleaning appeared to be a cost effective option for the Utah coal, but only marginally economical for the Montana coal. These cost results are expected to change to favor coal cleaning to a greater extent with the application of the final revised New Source Performance Standards regulating SO2 emissions just issued by the EPA. The study was based on the regulation originally proposed by the EPA under the 1977 Clean Air Act Amendments.

Mount Isa copper concentrate was combusted in a laminar-flow furnace. The conditions simulated those likely to be encountered in flames in flash smelters of the Outokumpu (air as oxidant) and INCO (oxygen as oxidant) types. The range of conditions studied was as follows: T 400-1400°C, 02 0-100%, SO2 0-95% for residence times up to 0.23 s. The distribution of sulfur, arsenic and lead between the particles and the gas phase was studied. Combustion was very rapid provided the concentrate was adequately dispersed, i.e., no agglomerates. The importance of the latter is discussed. It was possible to oxidize 80% of the sulfur present in the con¬centrate after only 0.1 s reaction time at 1000°C in an atmosphere contain¬ing 8.5% 02 and 12.5% SO2. Best volatilizations (90% of the As, 52% of the Pb) were obtained under localized conditions attained in an air-type flame. Average volatilizations were: air-type flame, As 50%, Pb 32%; oxygen-type flame, As 40%, Pb 30%. The substitution of oxygen for air reduced the arsenic volatilization. The products of combustion were mainly cuprospinel and cuprite; small inclusions of elemental copper were found in some of the particles. The lining systems currently in use in BOF furnaces, certain steel ladles, and the slag line of electric are furnaces were developed during the late seventies through the mid-eighties using a trial and error method of combining aggregate, carbon sources, additives and binders. They are currently based on magnesia, graphite, metal additives and resin binders, the selections of each being tied to the anticipated intensity of the use conditions. The general functions of the respective constituents are well appreciated, however, there is still a great deal that is not known about how the socalled antioxidants protect the graphite nor how impurities from the graphite and the aggregate enter into the wear processes. In a simplified assessment of wear processes, it appears that if the deoxidized layer can be kept very thin, less than 810 mm in depth, and if the viscosity and quantity of the matrix glassy phases can be controlled to resist erosion of the deoxidized layer, lining life can be maximized for the various applications. This paper will discuss the characteristics of the starting materials systems currently being employed for applications requiring a deoxidation function to realize extended wear. It will not attempt to explain all the complex interrelationships between the respective constituents but will point to the potential for improvements through the use of improved constituents.

This paper is intended to call attention to the manifold uses of limestone in industry; to indicate the types of limestone desired by some of the large consuming industries; and to give some information on the resources of limestone in Canada, so that an idea may be obtained of the present and future possibilities for limestone production. The word limestone is used in the usual broad sense to include both high-calcium limestone and the highly magnesian variety known as dolomite, as well as all intermediate types. Lime is simply calcined limestone, and in this general paper its uses have been included with those of raw limestone. It is of interest, in dealing with this subject, to glance back over the early history of the utilization of limestone, for by so doing we see that limestone has been of importance to mankind since the beginning of civilization and has contributed in no small measure to the development of a number of the arts and sciences. One of the first uses, if not the first use, of limestone was in connection with the making of lime for plastering purposes. This use antedates civilization. In the day of the ancient Greeks and Romans, the art of plastering had been brought to a state of perfection that is not nearly approached by the modern artisan.

DURING 1943, supplies of lead, like those of most base metals, moved from a position of scarcity to one of ample supply for all possible war requirements. The principal worry in the market, as 1944 began, was that surplus stocks might increase too rapidly to maintain price stability. The problem of postwar stockpiling had definitely entered the picture. The end of the year finds the lead industry having met all use demands, but not without depleting stocks to a critical low in spite of heavy importations. The principal reason for this dangerously reduced stock position is lack of adequate man power, which, without question, has become the lead industry's number one problem. This condition became obvious about the middle of the year, after Selective Service placed in effect orders that no deferments would be given employees under 26 years of age, and to a complacent attitude toward the industry assumed by the War Manpower Commission. It has become progressively worse since then. The WPB continued its policy, started during 1943, of easing restrictions on materials to be used for maintenance, repairs, and operating supplies. The policy of premium payments established by the Metals Reserve Co. was continued and, in spite of expressions to the contrary, has proved quite satisfactory. Design of plugs for abandonment of boreholes and shafts may be governed by the bond strength between the plug and host rock. This paper presents the results of push-out tests on cement grout plugs in salt. Two expandable cement grouts have been tested. The average interface shear strengths ranged from 2 to 12 MPa. Peak shear stresses at failure, assuming an elastic stress distribution along the interface, were up to eight times higher. Standard deviations commonly reached 20%. Dissolution along the interface was observed, and may have been enhanced by clay inclusions in the salt. This dissolution appears to have reduced bond strengths. Application of the results to the design of plugs for larger openings (e.g. shafts, drifts, or boreholes) is discussed.

Systematic leakage surveys of natural-gas transmission lines not only aid in the conservation of gas, but can be made to show direct financial returns of large magnitude. 1. Such surveys reveal the actual leakage from the lines, and indicate repairs to be made in order, to eliminate unnecessary waste. 2. Tests on lines, after repairs are made, show the actual saving that has been accomplished. 3. Tests on newly constructed lines reveal the presence of leakage that should be eliminated before the lines are put into service.

PRESIDENT PRYDE: Any discussion on Mr. Poster's paper? MR. J. BEVAN: I would like to ask the gentleman how fine the dust has to be to cause an explosion? MR. T. FOSTER: According to the Bureau of Mines, it is claimed coal passing through a 100 mesh screen would be considered fine enough. That is all I can learn from the different bulletins. MR. BEVAN: Will the coal dust be that fine; going back in the empty cars on the tipple in the mine? MR. FOSTER: Possibly a great deal of it would be. MR. BEVAN: Will the coal dust be that fine, going back, in the empty the coal dust going back in the cars on the tipple, and into the mine? MR. FOSTER: In some places, they are wetting the cars at the tipple, -in the Rock Springs District, we have as the trip goes out, they have a big pipe, and they souse the car, and wet the load, and in some places, near the timbers; that helps to a certain extent. That does not absolutely eliminate it all, but it helps considerable. MR. WM. LITTLEJOHN (Utah Fuel Company) : I think we have all listened very attentively to the paper that Mr. Foster has just read. He has brought up a subject rather close to my heart, for a long time. He mentions particularly, the Scofield disaster, which happened the first of May, 1900; two hundred men lost their lives in the explosion; and I think it is generally conceded that is about the first time it had ever been brought to the attention of coal miners or operators that such a thing was possible, namely, a purely coal dust explosion. The term "Scofield disaster" is rather a mistake, in a way; while the mine that exploded at the time is in the Scofield District all right, it is now known, and probably was known at that time, as the Winter Quarters Mine, one of the mines which belongs to the Utah Fuel Company at the present time, and did at that time. "The Cordilleran region of western Canada includes most of British Columbia and the Yukon and pares of Alberta and the Northwest Territories. The western part of this region was for about 50 years the principal mineral producing area of the Dominion. It lost this distinction in 1907 when production from the mines of the Canadian Shield took the lead, but it continues to provide about 15 percent of the total Canadian production. In 1945 the total mineral production of British Columbia and the Yukon was valued at $65,302,900, of which about 80 percent was derived from metals.This paper is intended to serve as an introduction co the more derailed Cordilleran papers. Part I includes a brief synopsis of the complex geology and diverse types of mineralization in the region and Parr II collates the main structural principles exemplified in the derailed papers, and draws some conclusions regarding the application of this information to prospecting."

During April 1967 a Frasch sulfur mine was placed in operation near Fort Stockton, Pecos County, in West Texas. This was the first Frasch mine to recover native sulfur from a deposit not associated with the caprock of a salt dome. Since 1967 two additional mines have been opened in west Texas, another one near the first at Fort Stockton and a third one near Orla in Culberson County (Figure 2). Recoverable reserves at the Culberson County mine are estimated to be 57,000,000 long tons of native sulfur (Zimmerman and Thomas, 1969). Total recoverable reserves at the three mines probably exceed 60,000,000 long tons, Studies of the geochemical cycle of native sulfur mineralization in test Texas indicate an origin similar to the deposits on salt domes although the geologic framework is different. A comparison of the geologic setting of the west Texas deposits with the deposits in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics as reported in the literature, reveals many similarities. THE war emergency has affected every phase of industry. The gas and coke-oven companies have sought faithfully to discharge their responsibility in this critical period and have willingly modified their operations where possible to meet the ever increasing demands made upon them. Our company made commitments for blast-furnace coke for war purposes which necessitated a reduction in coking time in order to produce the amount required to. meet the new demands. At the same time there were certain customers of long standing, who had been supplied with foundry and egg-sized coke produced on fairly long coking periods, who also were engaged in war work and whose patronage we desired to retain. Coke produced on short coking rates from the coal mixture we were then using would not have been satisfactory for these customers. The average width of our ovens is 19 ¾ in., which is a little wider than the more modern ovens of the present day. They were originally designed to give somewhat cool tops in order to produce a rich gas. This necessitates carrying the heats a little on the warm side so that the tops will be fully carbonized. A reduction in coking time, as is generally known, is accompanied by a reduction in the average size of the coke produced. This is due to the greater shrinkage that takes place at the higher temperatures required to carbonize the charges in a shorter time. The net result is that the coke is more cross fractured and longitudinally fractured and breaks up into small sizes on handling. The cokes produced from the better coking coals seem to be more susceptible to fracture at high temperatures than those from poorer coking coals. A coal mixture that produces a beautiful foundry-sized coke at 30 to 36 hr. may yield a product at 18 hr. that would be so badly fractured as to be unsatisfactory for foundry practice. COKING CHARACTERISTICS OF COALS Our problem was to find some economical innovation and develop a method that would enable us to reduce the coking time and still produce a coke satisfactory to our foundry trade. However, before discussing the results of our present operations, it might be well to present a few observations on the coking characteristics of coals in general. Most coke-oven operators carbonize a blended mixture of coals. It may consist of a single high-volatile coal with a single low-volatile coal, or of a combination of several high-volatile and low-volatile coals. Medium-volatile coals of the Eagle seam are used for the production of high-grade foundry coke. Medium and high-volatile coals are often blended with one or more low-volatile coals. The possibilities are almost infinite, but the combinations are limited by such factors as cost and facilities for handling multicoal mixtures, and by other practical considerations. The remarks I am about to make rely on a large way on comments made by Barrick's Chief Counsel, Patrick Garver, to an internal meeting of Barrick's senior staff. I plagiarized so much from his notes that I thought that I should provide attribution. I did get his consent to borrow so freely. What I have done is take his general comments and used my conversations with CEO's and other participants in the industry to enhance the message with concrete examples that underscore the points I wish to make. What you are about to hear is my personal view – I am not speaking as a representative of any company. With that introduction, now would be a good time to give you the main theme of my talk: The SEC should change its rule making to a more public cooperative approach. If that were to happen the SEC would avoid some of the harm it has been doing to the companies in this sector and the very shareholders it seeks to protect.

The calculation of open pit operations' capacities has been the subject of many studies using computer simulations. The common problems of simulation are that if one desires a realistic picture of an operation the programming work becomes long and expensive and that the program requires a large computer and long time to run. The method presented in this paper overcomes these problems by using a straightforward calculation procedure. It is based on the queuing theory's simple formula for waiting time in a closed circuit and uses a system of correction factors, which reflect the loading, travel, and dumping times' relative variabilities and which have been found by 1) mathematical analysis and 2) simulations of basic circuits. The method includes the main parameters of the operation: numbers, sizes and operational availabilities of trucks, shovels and dumping point, distribution of the production over shovels, trucks' loading, travel (loaded and empty) and dumping times as well as their variabilities, shift's composition. The procedure models: the average duration of a complete truck cycle during stationary and non-stationary periods during the shift as a function of the number of trucks in the circuit, the composition of the average 100% operated shift, the simultaneous probabilities of operationally available shovels and trucks and the distribution of shovels and trucks according to production and cycle times. The procedure can be programmed for a small computer and requires only short computing time, which makes extensive studies of various parameter combinations practical to carry out. The development of the method is an extension of previous work by Morgan and Peterson {1}, who by simulation established the relation between the match factor (which is the ratio between the sum of one loading time pr truck in the circuit and the complete net cycle time) and the shovel's efficiency, and by Hayes, Splaine and Whitaker {2}, who established this relation from a large number of observations in the Nchanga pit in Zambia. The present method establishes this relation by a straightforward calculation procedure. Theoretical solutions to some situations are found in the litterature on the queuing theory. The papers {3},{4} and {5} give solutions to situations, which fall outside those encountered in the shovel-trucks circuit. These solutions together with simulations of in-termediary situations have been used to establish an interpolation procedure for the correction factors to be applied to the waiting time formula in order to cover the situations encountered in practice.
