Mechanical raise and tunnel boring are new techniques to most of the mining industry. Coal, salt and potash have been bored economically, but until recently boring machines were not designed specifically for rock boring in underground mining. The construction industry has led the field of rock boring since 1854 when the first tunnel boring machines built by James S. Robbins and Associates went to work at Oahe Dam, South Dakota. Since that time the company has built boring machines for tunneling through ground conditions varying from cohesionless soil to hard rock, and in diameters ranging from 7 feet to 36 feet 8 inches. It is natural that the construction industry got the jump on mining with the use of mechanical rock boring equipment. Mines have looked for the long range answer to problems of underground excavation and they have chosen proved and established techniques they expect to employ for the next ten or twenty years. The mine development was laid out to accommodate these techniques.

For base metal sulphides, iron rejection starts in mineral processing. This review focuses on the changes in plant practice specifically to improve iron sulphide rejection by controlling contaminant ion effects and discusses selected innovations in mineral processing that can be expected to play a role in iron control. One change to control contaminant ions is size reduction (the use of stage grinding and inert stirred milling) and another is system chemistry (order of reagent addition and exploitation of the flexibility of sulphoxy species). Plant examples illustrate the successes, and indicate that there are several options available. The general innovations consider the new tools for measuring gas dispersion properties and quantifying froth characteristics from images. Examples of their application to improve concentrate quality illustrate the potential. Other innovations adapt geostatistics to model variations in ore flotation response to provide feed forward control and rigorously apply the statistical experimental methodology in plant test work. An example from one concentrator shows that significant improvements to reduce the iron content of concentrates can be achieved by applying these basic principles.

Enclosed cabs have been used on surface mining equipment for many years to protect equipment operators from health and safety hazards. The surface mining and quarrying process is a highly mechanized process that generates large quantities of respirable dust. Due to economic factors, more older mining equipment is being used today than in years past. With this older equipment, it is common to observe deterioration of many components on the enclosed cabs which greatly reduce their protection effectiveness. NIOSH has performed a number of different field studies, as well as a comprehensive laboratory study evaluating various factors and parameters regarding enclosed cabs. NIOSH has recently completed a cooperative research effort with Sy-Klone International and Vulcan Materials Company to evaluate the effectiveness of a newly designed uni-directional filtration and pressurization system that brings all the clean filtered air in at the roof of the cab and extracts all recirculated air near the floor. This design provides the highest air quality to the equipment operator. Testing on this new system showed an almost 10-fold reduction in respirable dust inside the enclosed cab. The uni-directional design is easy to incorporate and should be considered for all new and retrofit systems in surface mining equipment.

"In a bid to renovate its Saganoseki Smelter & Refinery and to establish a leading production unit in terms of global competitiveness, Nippon Mining & Metals undertook major - restructuring efforts since 1993.One of its themes was the shift from a two-flash furnaces operation to a single-flash furnace operation. The shift was successfully completed in 1996 while maintaining the production at the same level (330,000 metric tons per year of copper) by adopting such measures as improvements in pneumatic concentrate dryers, the concentrate feeding system, concentrate burners, the furnace cooling system, and a new cryogenic oxygen plant was constructed.With a view to realizing high matte grade operation (at 65%Cu) and increasing the concentrate feeding rate, further steps were taken the capacity of waste heat boiler was expanded and technical improvements were added, including optimization of the smelting reaction in the furnace shaft. As a result, the smelting capacity, as of the year 2000, has increased to 450,000 metric tons per year of copper.IntroductionThe feed rate to the flash furnace was doubled to 140 t/h from 70 t/h in 1996. Teething problems, as a result of the renovation, were almost solved by the end of 1996, and the operation of the single furnace operation has become stable.The main theme was the shift from a two-flash furnaces operation to a single-furnace operation to maintain the production capacity at the same level, namely 330,000 metric tons of copper per year. Then, in a bid to further renovate the Saganoseki Smelter & Refinery and to establish a leading production unit in terms of global competitiveness, further enhancement of the flash furnace's productivity was planned.The purpose of this plan was to raise the copper production capacity to 450,000 mtpy building on the potentialities of existing plants and without installing new equipment."

This study investigated the corrosion rates of various steel types and coatings used for friction rock stabilisers in a deep-level gold mine under diverse underground environmental conditions. Testing was conducted in situ within ramps, intake airways, and exhaust airways, and through simulated laboratory experiments. Results revealed that environmental variations significantly influence the corrosion performance of different materials and coatings. Duplex coatings, made up of galvanised steel with an organic paint layer, demonstrated the highest corrosion resistance. Zinc-based coatings provided moderate protection, while 3CR12 stainless steel and uncoated S420 carbon steel exhibited comparatively poor resistance under both aqueous and atmospheric conditions.

INTRODUCTION Grinding mills have been used in the minerals processing industry for over 100 years. Their dimensions have grown continuously during this time. Besides increasing throughput rates of grinding plants due to the depletion of high grade ores, the lower specific in- vestment costs, as well as reduced operating and maintenance requirements are major reasons for this trend. When selecting new plant equipment one must consider that design principles which have proven their reliability on sizes of today's equipment do not automatically warrant a successful operation on the ever larger size of equipment. Modern calculation methods as for instance the Finite Element method already contribute considerably to the safe design of the huge equipment being built today and are a standard tool of the design engineers. More recently, modern computer programs are also being used in order to size the equipment to meet the process requirements. Today, two design principles are on the market - one which supports the weight of such a unit on trunnion bearings through cast conical endwalls and one which is supported through slipper pad bearings arranged at the circumference of the mill shell (Fig.1). The reason for the development of this alternative grinding mill design can be found in the past. During the sixties and seventies the growing sizes of ball mills with high LID ratios caused many mill failures due to cracked endwalls. The accuracy of the calculation methods as well as the quality standards for castings were not developed to a degree required for such kind of heavy equipment. One way to overcome these problems was the increase of the manufacturing quality standards as well as the introduction of the finite element method based on the analysis of the experience available. The biggest grinding mills being built today are large size SAG mills with cast conical endwalls and trunnion bearings (Fig.2). This is due to the fact that mill manufacturers who had come from the conventional ball mill design adopted these principles as well to their SAG mills. These grinding mills perform well without special concern to the operators. Other manufacturers overcame the problems as mentioned above by eliminating completely the heavy castings and trunnion bearings and the problems associated to it (Fig.1). This design was originally applied to ball mills for the mining and other industries. Due to the success of these shell supported ball mills, this design principle was also applied to SAG mills(Fig.3). Despite of the fact that the majority of today's grinding mills are built to the conventional design it is also interesting to have a look at this alternative. Principles which have proven their reliability on sizes of today's equipment do not automatically warrant a successful operation on the ever larger equipment if bigger mill sizes are realized only based on the pantograph principle. With growing grinding mill sizes, the mass and volume flows through the equipment increases rapidly. Thus it is very important not only to concentrate on the safe design of the structural components of the equipment but as well on the process requirements. The influence of the design on important process parameters of dry and wet grinding plants are discussed thereafter. It shall be shown how modern computer programs can assist in the optimization of the design of components in order to fulfil the operational requirements of such large size equipment. PROCESS REQUIREMENTS OF LARGE SIZE GRINDING MILLS Dry Grinding Mills The world's biggest ball mill is a dry grinding ball mill having a diameter of 6.2m and an overall length of 25,5m with a drive power of 11,200 KW or 15,000HP. This grinding mill dries and grinds gold ore at a rate of 500 tons per hour at a moisture content of up to 9,5%. As shown in Fig.4 this mill was built as a shell supported unit. In fact only this design principle allowed to meet the process requirement. This mill could hardly be built with cast conical endwalls due to the constraints of the trunnion bearings limiting the mill inlet. The following case shows how modern computer programs can help to meet the design criteria of the air system of large size dry grinding plants. This paper proposes an improved temporal stability condition for the implementation of an inverse heat transfer method for predicting the time-varying bank thickness of the phase change protective bank inside a high temperature furnace. The direct problem is handled with the enthalpy method. The inverse method rests on the Adjoint Problem and the Conjugate Gradient Method. It is shown that the temporal stability condition for the inverse phase change problem relies on the time delay of the temperature measurements. Results indicate that this time delay is proportional to the heat diffusion time including heat diffusion through the mushy zone.

This paper describes results from a gender study for a new mine in Pajala, a small community in northern Sweden. Using a gender perspective, the study examines migration, education, local culture, the labour market, and work organisation as problems and opportunities in the regional context for the planned mine. The most obvious ‘gender issue’ for the Swedish mining industry is the very low percentage of employed women, which is even lower among mining workers. To recruit the best people, a company actively needs to attract both women and men; however, the mining companies find it difficult to recruit women as cultural, labour market and educational traditions as well as the mining companies’ own cultures often make it difficult for women to find work in the mining industry.The Torneå river valley, the region surrounding Pajala, has a gender-segregated labour market and gender-stereotyped culture and few young women live in this traditional and oldish region. Many young people leave the region and this is especially true for women. Compared to the rest of Sweden, there is a low educational level, especially among the men. In the mining companies, as in many other male homosocial workplaces, the workplace culture has strong connections to a certain type of traditional masculinity (laddishness, a kind of ‘macho-style’) and for a long time this has excluded women. ‘Gender’, however, is not only a question of recruiting women to a male-dominated industry. An organisation that discriminates according to gender can become inflexible, hindering communication, learning, innovations and change processes. In mining companies, this can manifest itself in hesitant attitudes among the miners about safety as well as organisational and technological development.This study found that companies establishing a presence in this region should develop a strategy for how to deal with and manage the risks and opportunities in the surrounding society (the regional culture) as well as inside the company (the mining culture). This need to be strategic will also be required of future mining companies as they will face higher demands on safety, gender equality, and technology to become modern, efficient and lean organisations.

Further, the scope of process control applications has drastically increased both in terms of the breadth of industries using process automation technologies and the vertical integration of these technologies within a single industry. This evolution and integration of process control technologies within the manufacturing industries has proceeded to such an extent that process automation is an integral part of modern business practices.This paper will examine the current status of process control technology from simple process regulation through process performance optimization to business planning. Each layer of the operations automation hierarchy will be discussed both in. terms of the current state-of-the-art and the directions in which these technologies are evolving. The key tools and tasks necessary for success at every level of the automation hierarchy will be introduced. Finally, the critical challenges that must be faced in accomplishing the goal of complete Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) will be described.Finally, although this paper addresses issues of practical importance to any manufacturing company, the discussions will be framed in terms of the particular challenges facing and the opportunities available within the materials manufacturing industries."

"Production of industrial minerals remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. In 2014, some 240 mines were registered in New Mexico, including 25 industrial mineral operations and 189 aggregate operations. New Mexico leads domestic production of potash, perlite, zeolite, and travertine. Other production includes aggregate, humate, pumice, gypsum, salt, common and fire clay, scoria, limestone, fly ash, cement, magnetite, silica, and decorative stone. New Mexico has potential for additional production of industrial minerals. One company is exploring for garnet. Cretaceous black sandstones in the San Juan Basin have drawn interest for titanium, rare earth elements (REE), and zircon. Other REE deposits are being explored. REE-Th-U veins are found in the Gallinas, Capitan, and Cornudas Mountains and Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills. Recent exploration has occurred for beryllium in the San Mateo Mountains, Iron Mountain, and Victorio districts. Companies also are examining High-Ca limestone and High-Mg dolomite for potential development. Aggregate continues to be important in urban areas and along highways. INTRODUCTION Industrial minerals and rocks are literally the building blocks of our way of life and they are an exceptionally diverse and vital group of raw materials that underpin almost all aspects of human activity, infrastructure, and standard of living. Industrial minerals and rocks are used in the manufacture of many products, from ceramics to plastics and refractories to paper. Although industrial minerals permeate every aspect of daily life, their presence and their role are typically invisible. A widely used definition of industrial minerals and rocks is “any rock, mineral, or other naturally occurring substance of economic value, exclusive of metal ores, mineral fuels, and gemstones: one of the non-metallics” (Bates, 1975). This definition includes the important construction materials sector as well as specialized industrial minerals, but complex interactions between consumer industries produce a number of apparent anomalies to this definition. Some metals are included as industrial minerals because their use is industrial rather than as a metal. Sulfur is now predominantly extracted as a by-product of cleaning natural gas, one of the world's major energy fuels. Production of industrial minerals has been and remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. Industrial minerals constitute nearly 40% of the more than $2.8 billion generated by mineral production in New Mexico in 2013 (Table 1, see APPENDIX). In 2015, some 240 mines were registered in New Mexico. This total includes 25 industrial mineral operations and 189 aggregate operations. New Mexico leads domestic production in potash, perlite, zeolite, and travertine. Other industrial minerals production from New Mexico includes aggregate, humate, pumice, gypsum, salt, common and fire clay, scoria, limestone, fly ash, cement, magnetite, silica, and decorative stone. According to reports received by the Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, as of January 1, 1929 there were 413 completed refineries in the United States, with a total daily crude-oil capacity of 3,509,540 barrels. In addition, 14 refineries, with a potential capacity of 99,000 barrels, were being constructed. Of the completed refineries, 341, with a capacity of 3,325,890 barrels, or 95 per cent of the total capacity, were in operation; and 72, with a capacity of 183,650 barrels, or 5 per cent of the total, were shut down. The improved condition of the refining industry in 1928 was indicated in several ways; namely, in an increase in the total capacity of the completed plants, in the opening up of a few plants which were shut down during 1927, in a decrease in the number of plants dismantled, and in an increase in the number of plants under construction. The majority of the refiners have followed a steady expansion program commensurate in most cases with the increase in demand for petroleum products. Obsolete equipment has been dismantled and modern equipment has been installed, with the net result that the total capacity of the completed refineries in the United States has shown a steady increase since January 1, 1918, the date of the first Bureau of Mines survey. Between January 1, 1928, and January 1, 1929, the number of completed plants fell from 423 to 413, but their total capacity increase 259,160 barrels, or 8 per cent. This compares with an increase in runs to stills of domestic and foreign crude petroleum of 10 per cent, and of domestic crude alone of 7 per cent.

In 1993 after over 110 years of mining operations, production ceased at the Broken Hill North Mine. Following the cessation of operations a rehabilitation program was developed to satisfy the requirements of the various government departments. This program has been implemented progressively since mine closure. The paper will discuss: primary aims and objectives of the rehabilitation program, implementation of the program, rationale behind rehabilitation objectives, and problems encountered in implementation of the program. To-date the primary rehabilitation of the mine has involved the capping of redundant tailing dams with inert waste rock to prevent the contamination of the receiving environment. A Water Management Plan has been developed to contain all run-off from the mine area in an extreme storm event. A cultural heritage assessment of the leases has been undertaken to ensure the rehabilitation is consistent with the historical significance of the site and community expectations. All redundant material from the mine has been sold in a æno reserveÆ auction and the workshop area has been relocated to the Southern operations. At present the only active areas on the mine are a maintenance area for equipment for the Potosi open pit, and a primary crusher for Potosi ore which is railed to the Southern operations for further processing. Upon completion of the rehabilitation program, Pasminco Broken Hill Mine intends to relinquish the mining leases to the Department of Mineral Resources.

INTRODUCTION IN previous publications of the writers4-7 it has been shown that vacuum extraction of steel can be carried as close to quantitative completion as desired provided the steel is in the austenitic state and sufficient time is allowed. For precise work, the method claims preference because the equipment for holding and heating the sample can be made simple, and because crucibles, boats, and other unnecessary materials can be eliminated and the blanks thus made very small. It is well known that the evolution rate of hydrogen is smaller just above the transformation than immediately below, as would be expected from the increase in solubility when passing into the gamma state. Many attempts have been made to obtain analyses by extraction just below the transition, using times of approximately 2 hr. While it is true that the rate of evolution drops nearly to zero under these conditions, it has repeatedly been shown that the process is incomplete since on raising the temperature into the austenitic range, evolution will be resumed, usually after a considerable induction period. The low-temperature evolution process appears to be useful in some cases for comparative tests where the residual error may be more or less constant between samples. For general use, however, there is no guarantee that the error caused by incomplete extraction is constant; hence, the more laborious but more reliable high-temperature process must be used. At high temperature, an original flash evolution, similar to that at lower temperature, is first observed. After not more than an hour, the flash subsides and evolution settles down to a regular first-order reaction rate for which the half-life* is usually of the order of a few hours for the 5/8-in. diam cylinder at 1050°C. The regular evolution may be followed for whatever period appears justified, after which the residual gas may be estimated as equal to that which was evolved in the last observed half-life period. The South African mining industry first experienced en-masse use of electronic detonators in the Narrow Reef environment using AELÆs ElectrodetÖ pre-set delay system. In recent years, programmable systems such as AELÆs SmartdetÖ have also established their position, and within both AEL and the mines there has been important learning around the strengths and weaknesses of these systems. In general, the fixed delay systems tend to be more easily appreciated by less-skilled work teams, and are very well suited to simple layouts, especially long, narrow blasts. However, development of programmable row controllers and series delay inserts has greatly expanded the field of usefulness of these systems while retaining most of the simplicity of use. The programmable systems are immensely flexible and therefore able to function under any condition, but require a higher level of discipline and knowledge. Much has been done to address this issue and make the systems user friendly, so the systems have converged to some extent. These systems are both valuable tools for achieving control over blasting in underground and surface applications. The choice of system is very dependent on the prevailing conditions. Accurate timing with electronic enhancements continues to show an increasing range of benefits to mining operations. There is a strong parallel with non electronic initiation systems which helps to understand the appropriate use of the systems.

Particle liberation studies are commonly used in the determination of the proportion of locked and liberated phases in ground ores at various stages of mineral processing. These studies may range from a qualitative assessment of a polished specimen in an optical microscope to a full quantitative analysis of the liberation characteristics of fine grained complex sulfide ores using scanning electron microscopy and high level image analysis. However, the conversion of quantitative data to meaningful information on a mill operations level is by no means a simple task. This paper reviews the errors inherent in the SEM/Image Analysis technique and looks at the various methods available to minimize errors in data collection.

"The present study deals with copper losses in slag from copper smelting. Copper slag cooling at Aurubis Bulgaria is traditionally done in pits. A new type of slag-cooling is introduced in the site, involving cooling ladles. In a previous study, the ladle cooling process was studied in detail, showing an improvement in the recovery of copper in the slag after flotation. The main reason for better recovery of copper is the increased cooling time, which allows for the accumulation and aggregation of copper droplets. The effects of the newly introduced slag cooling process are studied using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Cooling in pits and in ladles is compared, based on copper droplet size, distribution and content. Specialized image processing software is employed on images taken with an optical microscope. The results are then compared with a similar technique, available in SEM software. The availability of phase-analysing image software in combination with electron dispersive X-ray spectroscopy makes it possible to study the morphological properties, distribution and chemical composition of the copper droplets. The obtained results confirm the initial conclusions about size, distribution and composition of the copper-bearing particles. A large amount of copper particles is examined showing an obvious increase in their size from pit- to ladle cooling. The results show an increase in the average size of the droplets, which doubles from pit-cooling to ladle-cooling. There is a well-pronounced tendency of decrease of the percentage of droplets in the smallest fraction (<5 µm) in the ladle-cooled slag. In addition, the number of droplets in the larger fractions increases, compared to the ones in the pit-cooled slags. It is believed, that the developed methodology for analysis provides a relatively quick and reliable solution for comparison of the cooling rates in the slag. INTRODUCTION In the process of copper smelting and converting, iron-silicate slags are produced that contain various amounts of dissolved and entrained copper. Different physical and chemical techniques are employed for the valorisation of the remaining metals in the slag – magnetic separation, leaching, roasting, flotation, etc. According to Gorai et al (2003), about 2.2 tons of slag is produced per ton of metal. In 2016, about 20 million tons of copper have been produced globally (www.icsg.org). At an average of 0.5 percent copper content after treatment, these slags contain more than two hundred thousand tons of copper which is lost due to inefficient processing."

Fly ash and zeolite have strong absorption to cations since their porous microstructure. The porosities of fly ash and zeolite can also be increased by modification, which improves the absorption of the materials. This research showed that the effects of modified fly ash and zeolite to remove ammonia nitrogen from rainwater. The optimal reaction time, additive amount of materials, and pH value of the stormwater to remove ammonia nitrogen were experimentally determined. For modified fly ash, the optimal removal rate of ammonia nitrogen from 100 ml stormwater was 74.41% with the addition of 10.0g fly ash, 1.5 hours of the reaction time, and 8 of pH value. To the modified zeolite, the optimal removal rate of ammonia nitrogen was 51.22% at the reaction conditions of 2.0g of zeolite, 1 hour of reaction time, and 7 of pH value.

"Because of high cost and shortage of primary resources of Ni-base superalloys, revert alloys can be used as a part of charging materials for production of superalloys ingots. The current study is based on recycling of IN738LC, a Ni-base superalloy, using 30% and 50% reverted alloy and balanced amount of virgin raw materials. Therefore, it has been attempted to cast an alloy with references to standard chemical composition and mechanical properties. After charging and casting in vacuum melting furnaces, chemical composition verification and non-destructive tests (i.e. Penetration and Radiography Tests), quality of samples were evaluated at elevated temperature by stress-rupture test. Results acquired from chemical composition and mechanical test indicate that cast ingots using 30% and 50% reverted alloy is reliable and consistent with the quality control requirements.IntroductionIn recent years, there have been many fluctuations in cost and availability of raw materials which are extremely determining in Ni-base superalloys production. Accessibility to the high purity metals such as Cobalt, Molybdenum, Tantalum, Niobium and etc. have been problematical during the past decades. Therefore, shortages of critical raw materials beside the economical considerations motivated the alloy suppliers and investigators to study and find alternate sources such as reclamation and recycling of scraps [1].There are a lot of reasons for the necessity of recycling; perhaps the most justifiable one is that consumers themselves produce scraps. For example, the weight of a finished superalloy product could be less than one-third of the cast alloy weight and in the case of complicated machined parts; this portion may reach to one-tenth [2]. High values of constituents, reduction of energy consumption and environmental concerns have all strengthened the obligation of recycling in Ni-base superalloys.Because of the high degree of risk in usage of improper materials for production of turbine blades, a delicately controlled program for recycling is needed. Depending on the type of scraps, this program can define the recycling procedure, required instruments, allowable percentage of scrap for usage and finally confidence level of the process."
