A basic technology coping with a wide range of secondary zinc sources has been developed. The process combines an electrowinning stage, a solvent-extraction unit and a leaching procedure. The acidity generated in zinc electrowinning, transferred by the organic solvent to the aqueous raffinate, is reused to leach the zinc secondary materials. The basic process recovering zinc is described in detail. The route recovering other valuable metals such as copper, cadmium and lead associated with zinc is also described. This non-ferrous metals recovery route is advisable for either ecological and/or economical reasons. Main results of an experimental program aiming at the demonstration of the suitability of the process for several feed materials are summarized. Waelz oxides, galvanizing ashes and EAFD coming from different sources were tested in laboratory and continuous pilot plant campaigns. High zinc recovery, low reagents and utilities consumption, and effluents meeting environmental regulation were confirmed. The paper also includes the main results of a feasibility study of an industrial "base case". A mixed raw material and Spanish EAFD and 20,000 ta of zinc ingots production were chosen. The SGH zinc recovery from secondary raw material by means of the clean, safe and profitable Modified Zincex Process has been demonstrated. This reliable technology is ready for industrial application.

The design and construction of temporary working platforms for cranes and piling rigs is a high-risk activity. It requires the careful selection of the appropriate input parameters to obtain the correct load cases, as well as the application of robust and reliable design methods to assess the required thickness and stiffness of the working platform. The document introduces some of the most common and most relevant guidelines for working platform design which are currently used in Australia and New Zealand. The authors will also discuss the basic assumptions and considerations about load transfer from construction plant, debate ground risk, compare the applicability of different design methods for various ground conditions and suggest some common verification methods for working platform certification.

The selection of the mining fleet can have as much of an effect on the efficiency and effectiveness of an operation as the mining method. This is not to say that inefficiencies are only attributable to inappropriate equipment selections, these aspects have many factors but are not the subject of this paper.This paper will give an overview of equipment selection processes that have been utilised to date. It will also look at the increase in application of study programs/simulations from an aspect of accuracy, as well as the importance of enabling the analysis of multiple sensitivity scenario planning. An aspect that is increasingly important in project planning with commodity market movements.Another aspect that is increasing in popularity is that of automation, what effect does this have on equipment selection? What additional aspects need to be taken into consideration when assessing Automation of equipment from the beginning of a project as well as introduction into an operating mine?Once the selection process has been finalised and equipment implemented, how do we, as an industry, 'close the loop' through analysis of estimated versus actual equipment application?

IT is now well established that quenched and tempered titanium alloys have much better ductility when the quenching is from a two phase a-B structure, rather than from an all B structure. The corresponding microstructural differences, however, have not been shown in previous publications. Accordingly, specimens were cut from a % in. rod of commercial RC-130A, containing 7.9 pct Mn and 0.12 pct C, which had been previously hot rolled, heated 1 hr at 1100°F, and air cooled. (The same heat has been studied by others." 7 Samples about 1/4 in. cube were heated in helium 1/2 hr at 1450' or 1700°F, quenched in brine, tempered in helium 1 hr at various temperatures up to 1250°F, and quenched in brine. They were then sectioned and metallo-graphically examined, using an etchant of HF-HNO, in glycerine. As quenched from 1700°F, the microstructure observed was clear /3. (Probably also present was U, as the hardness was 400 Vhn, but w is not yet reliably revealed by any metallographic technique.) Phosphate is one of the most important minerals in our world today. It contains the life-giving element of phosphorus, which is essential to the growth of every living cell in plant, animal, and man. This vital mineral is found in twenty-three states of the United States; however, for more than 70 years, Florida has led the nation in phosphate-production and now produces 70% of the requirements of this country. Since the early 1880% when rich phosphate deposits were accidentally discovered in a river-bed in Central Florida, the industry has developed into a multi-million-dollar operation. Phosphate mining began in Florida in 1887 with very crude methods and equipment. The original process was necessarily slow and tedious, resulting in total production of 3000 tons in 1888. Progress was made in improved mining operations, and by 1894. Florida had grabbed the lead as the nation?s largest phosphate-producing area, and is still in the top position.

A DIGHEM survey was flown in the Belford-Montcalm Township area of Ontario in November 1975. This 600-linemile survey resulted in the detection of 134 EM anomalies. The Montcalm Township copper-nickel discovery yielded a single-line anomaly having a conductance of 154 mhos. This anomaly was highly visible because (a) it had the highest conductance in the survey area, (b) it correlated with a 175-gamma thumbprint-shaped magnetic anomaly and (c) it was isolated from long conductive bands. The deposit is a copper-nickel pyrrhotite body which occurs in gabbro and strikes north-south, parallel to the flight lines. The DIGHEM survey was flown north-south, because the exploration program was primarily concerned with locating copper-zinc sulphides in the east-west-striking felsic volcanics. The flight line passed close to the deposit and yielded a 9-ppm anomaly on the chart record. The computer analysis showed that a deposit of exceptionally high conductance (154 mhos) caused the relatively weak (9 ppm) anomaly. The ground follow-up program of magnetics and EM led quickly to the discovery drill hole, which penetrated the orebody in September 1976. Subsequent geophysical surveys consisted of horizontal-loop EM, pulse EM, magnetic and induced polarization surveys over an area of about 8 claims. In addition, a detailed DIGHEM" airborne survey was flown at a line spacing of 100 m to evaluate the entire property of 620 claims. This detailed survey yielded EM conductor maps and contour maps of resistivity, magnetics and enhanced magnetics.

"Deep concentration of iron ores involves extraction, in addition to magnetite concentrate, of hematite and martite concentrates and recovery of other valuable components. A flotation technology was designed specifically for finely disseminated hematite ore, allowing producing saleable hematite concentrate containing 64-66% Fe. The main process challenge is caused by the presence of other ferruginous minerals such as carbonates, silicates, and phosphates, and fine hematite and martite mostly concentrated in the -0.044 mm fraction. Main operations of the processing circuit are removal of slime, flotation to remove impurities (carbonates, phosphates etc.) with an anionic phosphorous collector in an alkaline environment, hematite and martite flotation using same collector in a slightly acidic environment to produce commercial iron concentrate. Tailings of wet magnetic separation of magnetite containing 24.5% Fe and finely disseminated hematite ore containing 51% Fe were processed to produce iron concentrates with a yield of 15% and 50%, respectively, containing approximately 65% Fe and 5% of silica. Hematite flotation tailings had the highest content of gold (up to 0.09 - 0.11 g/t), while in other products it never exceeded 0.02 g/t. Using a Knelson concentrator was able to recover 40 to 45% of the gold into 3.31 g/t Au gravity concentrate. The success of gravity concentration is due to high gravitational contrast of gold to mostly quartz and aluminosilicates in the hematite flotation tailings. In general, the proposed process can be used as a solution to the challenge of selective concentration of finely disseminated iron minerals."

The cobalt production of the Chemical Metallurgical Division of Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited was supplemented, from May, 1962, to June, 1964, by processing 3,500 tons of a calcined cobalt-nickel concentrate. This paper describes the reduction roast -aqueous sulphuric acid leach process and the operating practices employed in recovering cobalt, nickel and copper from this oxidized by-product of a lead-copper operation. Incorporated in this paper is a description of how this process was integrated with the existing ammonia leach -hydrogen reduction process for the recovery of nickel and with the soluble cobaltic ammine process for the recovery of cobalt. Introduction T HE Chemical Metallurgical Division of Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited at Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, has recently completed ten years of operation utilizing the ammonia leach process for the recovery of nickel, cobalt and copper from sulphide concentrates, matte and other materials amenable to this process. A continuing development program, along with the expansion of certain facilities, has enabled the refinery to attain a production rate of 31, 000,-000 pounds of nickel per year by hydrogen reduction. This represents an increase of approximately 85 per cent over the original design capacity of the plant.

The productivities of many hydrocarbon-bearing for-rnntions appear to be reduced during drilling, completing and repairing operations. The reason for these othcarwise unexplainable low productivities may be a drastic reduction of formation permeability immediately surrounding the borehole. A possible cause of the reduced permeability is swelling and dispersion of clays present in porous media when contacted by fresh water or mud filtrates. Hence, the invasion of fresh water or mud filtrate into hydrocarbon-bearing formations that contain clays may cause low productivities as a result of formation damage. Present laboratory investigations have yielded results which supplement existing literature on formation damage. An expanded-type clay, montmorillonite, way found in hydrocarbon-bearing formations not previously analyzed. When sand columns and formation cores containing montmorillonite were contacted by fresh water, their oil permeabilities were reduced. This reduction in oil permeability way restored partially but not completely by a repair procedure, i.e., flooding with kerosene containing organic agents or flooding with water containing electrolytes. Hence, where montmorillonite is present in formations, prevention of formation danzage was indicated to be the only complete solution to the problem. To prevernt formation damage, results suggested use of an approximately 1 per cent solution of calcium chloride or stronger solutions of sodium or potassium chloride. In conventional rotary drilling operations the wall of the hole is exposed to drilling mud for days, weeks, and in some instances for as long as several months. During this time, drilling mud filtrate seeps slowly into formations surrounding the hole. The permeability and stability of many formations, especially those containing clayey materials, are impaired by the mud filtrate. Often interaction between the mud filtrate and the formation causes drilling and production difficulties. Serious reduction in productivity of oil and gas formations during drilling, completing and repairing wells has been noted often in recent years. Cases are known of development wells which produced only small volumes of fluid upon completion. However, after a period had elapsed, they began to produce oil or gas in commercial quantities. In other cases, results of drill-stem tests taken during the drilling of deep wells have indicated good production should be obtained from shallow formations. Later difficulty has been experienced in obtaining production from these shallow formations which had remained in contact with drilling muds for an extended time. In yet other cases wells have failed to attain the productivities expected from previous performance after the use of drilling mud as a circulating fluid during workover operations. It is evident from the field behavior cited that the productivities of certain oil- and gas-bearing formations have been damaged by exposure to drilling muds. This reduction in well productivity, called "formation damage", causes serious consequences. In development wells, expensive remedial operations are incurred. In wildcat wells, good formations may appear to be marginal or even non-productive. The importance of formation damage has been recognized by a number of investigators1-s who have considered the effects of fresh water, saline solutions and aqueous mud filtrates on the permeabilities of formations. A general conclusion from such studies is that interaction between water and formation clays reduces permeability of reservoir rock and that the permeability decreases as salinity of the water decreases. Data in these references, however, concern the permeability change with only a single fluid present. A more pertinent and direct consideration in the production of oil and gas from wells is the permeability change when two fluids, oil and water, are present. Recognizing this, Nowak and Kreuger2 and Bertness1" considered several ways in which mud filtrates and saline solutions caused reductions in the oil permeability of formation cores. Equilibrium constants have been determined for the jeaction C (in steel) + H2O = CO + H2 as a function of carbon content (0.013 to 0.74 ujt pct) and temperature (1200° to 1800°F) by using a flow system in which the water-vapor content of various gas mixtures containing hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen was systematically controlled. The equilibrium partial-pressure ratio K1 = PcoPH2/PH2O was obtained for two low-carbon steels and four Fe-C binaries from a series of runs made at each temperature. By comparison of Ki with the analogous ratio for the reaction C (graphite) + H2O = CO + H2, the activity of carbon in steel (ac) was comDuted for each temperature and carbon content studied. From these data values of the equilibrium constants for two other carburization-decarburiza-tion reactions of importance were estimated. The chemical compositions of the two steels and four Fe-C binaries used are given in Table I. Specimens of Steel E were cut from a 0.035-in.-thick commercially box-annealed and temper-rolled lot of a low-carbon low-metalloid steel. Steel F was a commercially hot-rolled rimmed steel that was cold-reduced at the Laboratory to a 0.059-in. thickness. Fe-C binaries A, B, C, and D were vacuum-melted and poured, hot-rolled, pickled, and cold-reduced at the Laboratory to furnish specimens 0.035 in. thick. Sheet specimens were cut from all lots to approximately 3/4 by 3 in. by gage and were vapor-degreased with trichlo-roethylene and weighed before heat treatment. Continuous improvement using six sigma methodologies commonly follows the DMAIC methodology of define, measure, analyse, improve and control. A key requirement in the use of this approach is to ensure that data is trusted, validated and contextual. In today’s production environments it is common to find disparate technology comprising the system architecture and highly customised interfaces between the various technology layers. This complexity often leads to inaccurate data presented at the operations management layer or worse, data that is not trusted. Identifying defects and making corrective actions cannot be efficiently carried out unless trusteddata can be easily obtained with a production context. It is also common to find that disparate systems of this nature present information in multiple ways and through multiple presentation systems. This paper discusses how the use of web-based technologies in an integrated technology stack can aid the accessibility, accuracy and trust of data used in decision-making and also how a unified visualisation environment can lead to greater operator efficiency.

"INTRODUCTION Underground Mining and Construction projects face several challenges unique to the underground environment compared to the surface environment. The goals of an effective blasting program are the development of a blast pattern that minimizes cost, maximizes face advance, and provides the desired fragmentation and face profile. In addition to these , mines must consider the very real operational problems that occur such as drill deviation, ground vibration, and deadpressing or sympathetic detonation of explosives. These operation problems lead to increased costs and decreased production in the mine, hurting the bottom line. Combined with these problems, underground blasts can be difficult to monitor and evaluate due to tight spaces, dust during the blast obscuring video, and the need to evacuate the immediate area with no clear line of sight to observe performance. This creates an environment which most mines know that blasting can be improved in their underground operations, yet most are hesitant to change due to fears of the shot freezing, misfires occurring, and questions about how to achieve a proper design. The explosive companies and shot service providers also offer limited assistance or knowledge in the underground blasting realm, unlike with surface blasting, leaving many underground operations in the dark. It is for these reasons that most underground operations are operating decades behind the current technologies and incurring significant costs, both real and hidden, from there blasting operations. This paper discusses philosophical changes to designs that need to be made for effective design and modifications of underground blast patterns to prevent deadpressing and precompression of modern explosive products (Konya, Konya, & Worsey, Modern Blasting Method Selection, 2017). While numerous different methods of underground heading development exist, there are two types that are used in a majority of mines around the world, these are the burn cut and the V-cut. The burn cut is a parallel cut that has holes that go straight into the face and are primarily used in smaller opening (due to ability to pull deep rounds with smaller room widths) and metal mines (helps in ore dilution and greater fragmentation). The V-Cut is a cut that uses angled drilling towards the center of the face (in the traditional method) and is primarily used in underground aggregate operations due to its cheap cost but larger fragmentation sizes and greater throw of the muckpile. This paper will discuss these two forms of cuts specifically with the understanding that modifications to these can be applied to other parallel and angled underground heading techniques. BURN CUT The burn cut is one of the older forms of underground blasting, where a part of the blast (burn) of a shot is heavily loaded with additional empty (relief) holes with the goal of smashing (aka burn) and pushing/blowing all the material in the burn out to provide relief for subsequent blastholes. The relief holes in the burn cut provide a parallel relief for the holes that are firing to break too creating a second plane of relief, however these are extremely small and can cause many problems if a design is improper."

The flotation of calcite has been studied by many investigators, especially in terms of type of collector; pH; and metal ions that activate and, more importantly, depress the flotation of calcite (1)(2). Research was extended to the investigation of the effect of polyvalent metal salts and sodium silicate using these materials added separately or in mixtures (3)(4)(5)(6). Flotation of calcite was also studied with respect to its function as a carrier in the beneficiation of kaolin clays by Ultraflotation (7) (8) (9). The carrier used in Engelhard Minerals & Chemicals Corporation's industrial Ultraflotation operation is calcite. This fact, coupled with the continuing interest in Ultraflotation phenomena, led to a study to determine the effect of polyvalent metal-silicate hydrosols on the flotation of calcite.

Open pit mining commenced at Lihir Island in 1997 and is undertaken using a conventional drill, blast, load, haul methodology. Unique challenges at the operation include an active geothermal system, a well-developed advanced argillic blanket in the upper portions of the orebody and high rainfall. Grade control is effective utilising routine blast cone sampling. While this provides ‘just in time’ grade information for mill blending, there are opportunities to improve scheduling of mill feed, based on material classification of clay types and sulfur grades. The nature of the clay can impact on the handling properties while the sulfur grade is an important guide for autoclave blending, required for refractory gold. Drilling below the pit floor introduces hazards from the identified geothermal field. A trial Reverse Circulation (RC) program was implemented with the aim of defining four benches below the active mining bench. A comprehensive risk analysis, including the geothermal environment, was undertaken to design a drill collaring procedure with pressure diversion equipment. Operator exposure was minimised through ‘nil on foot’ principles with the driller located in an onboard cab, utilising remote rod handling. Sampling personnel operate in an elevated platform with access to protective covering. Samples from blastholes and the RC holes are processed at two site laboratories. One provides conventional Au fire assays with additional Infrared Combustion (Leco style) S analysis. The second laboratory collects material classification details from portable XRF (pXRF), near infra-red spectrometry (ASD) and Hardness Indicator Testing (HIT). An existing workflow was updated by the site to deal with the additional samples and ensure production ‘turn around times’ were retained for short-term planning. This required some changes to drying temperatures, compositing and screen sizing for the material classification. All results from the two laboratories are loaded into a centralised acQuire database for estimation into a single block model that informs the 13 week medium term planning (MTP) schedule. This paper describes some of the logistical issues faced when drilling in a geothermal area. It also discusses the selection and commissioning Quality Assurance of the sampling equipment and drill rig. Integration of the resulting assay data with existing resource models is also explained.

"This paper presents the results of a static load testing program completed on helical pile foundations for the replacement of high voltage transmission line tower structures. The foundations were part of the Northeast Grid Reliability Project (NGRP) for the Public Service Electric & Gas Company (PSE&G) near Newark, New Jersey. Structure foundations “anchor bolts down” was a design build contract model with the superstructure as bid-build.The soil stratigraphy along the alignment generally consisted of fill over about 10 ft of organic deposits underlain by up to 260 ft of normally consolidated glacial lake clays and silts. Additional project challenges included working under/adjacent the existing live high voltage lines, narrow site access due to environmental permits, foundations in a tidally influenced area, and pile projections in the order of 10 feet to meet the 10 year flood level requirements.The helical piles were constructed of 12.75 inch diameter open ended pipe piles with 36 to 40 inch diameter helices. A total of seven static load tests (compression and tension) were completed on 60 ft and 90 ft long piles, using both welded and mechanical pile splices. To evaluate pile-soil setup in the sensitive fine grained soil and determine representative longer term installation torque factors (Kt) for the production piles, the static load tests were performed 7 to 49 days after pile installation.Helical piles were found to be the most cost effective foundation alternative for this project. The required length of helical piles was less than other alternatives for similar allowable axial capacity. Helical piles with mechanical splices were installed for the varying structure foundations including tangent and heavy deadend, to a deadend monopole. Installation of 448 production piles (34,320 linear ft) was completed in three months. The installation timeline was critical to meeting the semi-annual PSEG outage for switching the old and new structures. Helical piles employing a mechanical splice resulted in an efficient and effective foundation solution for the conditions encountered on the project."

High temperature roasting studies on chrome-spinel contaminated ilmenite concentrates showed that sulfur, introduced through a sulfidising roast treatment, selectively reacted with the chromium in the spinels. The roast treatments were carried out in a laboratory scale rotating drum kiln using a standard Becher-style heating profile (10 h, 1075ºC), char as the reductant, and variable amounts of added elemental sulfur (0 - 3 wt per cent).After roasting, bronze-coloured grains were visible representing chrome-spinels that had undergone selective sulfidisation. SEM imaging of the products showed that sulfur was preferentially concentrated in ~5 - 15 µm thick rims fully enclosing the chrome-spinel grains. The sulfur-rich rims became a sink for manganese (Mn) from the ilmenite resulting in the rims being rich in Cr-Mn-Fe-sulfides. Quantitative electron probe microanalysis of phases present within the rims identified two sulfide phases. The first sulfur-phase (S-phase) was low in Mn (1 - 3 wt per cent) and high in Fe, Cr and S, while the second S-phase was considerably higher in Mn (30 - 35 wt per cent Mn) and lower in Fe and Cr. The dramatic change in the composition of the chrome spinels after sulfidisation is likely to significantly alter their physical properties (eg hydrophobicity, conductivity, etc). This should make their physical separation from the ilmenite potentially easier than roasting/magnetic separation methods.

It is the purpose of this paper to discuss briefly some of the recent developmellts in connection with the use of electrical apparatus for the mining of coal. For several years electricity has been employed extensively for the distribution of power, primarily for the operation of mine-locomotives and chain coal-cutters, and secondarily for motors driving pumps, ventilating-fans, rope-haulage, conveyors, crushers, auger-drills, coke-oven larries, etc. The severe and peculiar conditions which attend the development and distribution of power for the operation of coalmining machinery constitute a field to which the electricmotor seems to be especially adapted. The underground use of steam-engines, to any great extent, is impracticable for obvious reasons. The much higher efficiency of the electrical system is a potent argument in its favor as compared with compressed air, which, under ordinary circumstances, should only be employed for the operation of rock-drills and coal" punchers." The conditions in many mines prohibit the under-cutting of coal with a chain-machine; and the compressed-air " puncher," with its very low efficiency, is extensively employed. There have been no recent important improvements in the design and construction of the chain-machine, although, of course, minor changes are continually being made. More time and attention are being paid now than ever before to the details of mining-machinery, with the idea of eliminating the weaknesses which have been developed, and especially of facilitating repairs and renewals. In our comparison of California and Turkish colemanites, we should first place the discussion in context. In order to exclude technical considerations, which are not germane to this paper, we must make the manifest and basic observation that if colemanite were not acceptable for the production of glass products it would not be used, and we would not be interested in this comparison at all. Suffice it to say that the colemanites, being calcium borates, provide a necessary flux in glass manu¬facture, together with the requisite degree of physical strength and chemical durability which can be achieved only by the use in glass of a. flux substanti¬ally free from alkali; so the sodium borates are automatically excluded from the production of textile fibers. Thus we have today under consideration only California colemanite, Turkish cole mite, and, because it provides a degree of competition to both, ABA, or anhy¬drous boric acid, which, although it is a refined intermediate and of much higher cost, it is also of a much higher degree of purity, and its characteristics can easily be modified to produce a desired end product, so we must include it in any consideration of high quality borates.
