Since the start up of the IMMSA electrolytic zinc refinery in 1982, the dissolved iron coming from the acid attack of the ferrites has been precipitated by the jarosite process. At the beginning of operations, sodium jarosite was produced; however, the plant was converted to ammonium jarosite in 1990. The final storage of the residue is on the company&apos;s property adjacent to the plant, over the natural surface of the land. Before the construction of the refinery, several studies were done in order to evaluate the characteristics of the ground, such as, permeability, underground water localization, etc. The results showed that the site was adequate for the storage of this kind of material. For several years, the jarosite residue was filtered on rotary drum filters and was sent as a pulp to the storage area for settling. The water from the storage pond was recycled to the re-pulp tank for the jarosite residue. These filters were replaced in 1999 by an automated filter press. Since then, the jarosite residue has had a lower water content, and the zinc recovery improved. At present, a second filter press for the jarosite circuit is in the acquisition process to diminish the soluble zinc content in the residue from the present value of 2% to < 1% Zn.

The Nation&apos;s mining and quarrying industries have again met the annual challenge to their ingenuity--that of reducing disabling work injuries among their employees. The effectiveness of management in facing this problem and in meeting this responsibility is evident from the results of the 1961 National Safety Competition. Three hundred ninety-three or 45.3 percent of the mines and quarries participating in the competition established a new record number of participants operating throughout the competition year without a disabling work injury. Another record established in the 1961 contest was the number of participants (868) enrolled in the competition. This annual safety competition was begun in 1925 and is conducted by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior. It provides for six bronze Sentinels of safety trophies which are awarded each year to the winning participant in each group. Since its inception, the competition has exerted a strong influence in the field of safety promotion. The statistical record of its accomplishments over the years gives strong support to the theory that well-organized and well- administered safety programs are effective tools to be used to reduce the number of disabling work injuries. It stimulates and holds the interest of employees and management in accident prevention. Because of this, mines and quarries participating in the contest have a more favorable safety record than those operations not enrolled.

Advances in technology now allow geotechnical practitioners to better describe the properties and variability of a rock mass through advances in surface and underground mapping, borehole technology and geophysical imaging. Yet the way in which practitioners use this data is not being realised to its full potential and the quality and quantity of data that is collected is often superior to the conventional design approaches that are typically adopted. A discrete fracture network (DFN) approach provides the ideal basis for using this data to generate geologically-realistic rock mass models based on parameters derived from field data, which more effectively capture the variability and rock mass behaviour. However, until recently, the DFN approach has mainly been applied to cave mining and small-scale models associated with synthetic rock mass modelling or groundwater flow modelling for the nuclear waste and oil and gas industries.Ground support design for blocky rock masses in Australia is often dealt with in a rather traditional manner, adopting either an observational empirical approach through rock mass classification systems or conventional wedge stability analysis techniques. Using these methods requires several generalised assumptions about the rock mass fabric and excavation geometry. As such, the support system is often designed for a worst-case scenario based on a predetermined risk tolerance that the mine is willing to accept and a design block size that is generally determined by the proposed excavation dimension.A study by Doumis (2014) used conventional wedge stability analysis and the probabilistic key block analysis software JBlock (Esterhuizen, 1996) to estimate potential block sizes and support requirements. A DFN approach has also been adopted at Callie underground mine using FracMan™ software (Golder Associates, 2014). In Canadian oil sands processing, flotation is used to recover liberated bitumen droplets from oil sands slurries. Similar to conventional mineral flotation practice, a fundamental limitation of recovering bitumen from low grade oil sand ores is its slow and ineffective aeration of the liberated small bitumen droplets. Gas nucleation and cavitation could provide better mechanisms for accelerating bitumen-bubble attachment. A research program was undertaken to examine factors affecting spontaneous bubble nucleation on bitumen surfaces. The results demonstrate that surface hydrophobicity and existence of gas nuclei in process water play a critical role for bubble nucleation. While there are more bubbles nucleated on highly hydrophobic silanated glass surfaces than on moderately hydrophobic bitumen, bubble nucleation on clean hydrophilic glass surfaces is negligible. Heating process water up to 85 ~ 95oC (as used in commercial operation) or boiling tap water prior to gas nucleation tests is shown to remove sufficient amount of gas nuclei existing in the water, thereby drastically reducing the number of bubbles nucleated on bitumen. Enhancing gas nuclei formation in hot process water is identified as a promising strategy to improve bitumen-bubble attachment during oil sands conditioning, and hence to increase bitumen recovery from low grade ores.

"The komatnte-associated Fe-Ni-Cu sulphide mineralization at Kanihalda, Western Australia, is generally believed to be magmatic in origin, but a number of postmagmatic processes significantly modified the original distribution, structure, texture, mineralogy and chemistry of the ores. Two important types of mobilized magmatic sulphides are interpillow/interbreccia sulphides and hydrothermal vein-type sulphides. Interpillow and interbreccia sulphides occur interstitial to pillowed or volcaniclastic footwall metabasalts beneath or adjacent to the stratiform contact ore horizons. They are mineralogically and compositionally similar to massive ores (and are similarly depleted in PGE relative to the compositions of bulk samples of mined ores), but normally do not contain the distinctive chalco-phile ferrochromites characteristic of contact ores. They are interpreted as magmatic sulphides that have been mobilized from the overlying or adjacent massive sulphide layer during peak tectono-nietamorphism.Hydrothermal sulphide-quartz + albite veins also occur in the footwall metabasalt and contain unannealed deformation fabrics indicative of emplacement during retrograde metamorphism. The high Ni and Pd contents of these sulphides (7-13% Ni, up to 70 ppm Pd) indicate that the metals have been derived from the spatially associated komatiites and/or contact ores, consistent with the Pd depletion previously inferred for massive ores. Very low Ir contents and high Pd/Ir ratios of the vein-type sulphides confirm an aqueous transportation-deposition mechanism; hydrothermal transfer of PGE results in strong decoupling of Pd from Ir.There appears to be a complete continuum of sulphide mobilization at Kambalda ranging from whole-scale phy sical dislocation (fault offset ores) and selective mobilization (stringer sulphides) through nietamorphie replacement (interpillow/interbrec- cia sulphides) to jiydrothermal dissolution and redeposition (vein-type sulphides)."

"The Soviet Union has enormous reserves of iron ore in many different kinds of deposits that are widely distributed in this vast land area. The present iron ore industry is based mainly on deposits in Precambrian cherty iron-formation at Krivoy Rog, Kursk and Murmansk. Extensive reserves of both naturally enriched hematite ore and magnetite iron-formation in these areas alone could sup-ply all the domestic ore required for several hundred years.Many contact metasomatic magnetite deposits discovery in recent years in the eastern Ural Mountain belt and east of the Kusnetsov basin in Siberia are being developed, with ore reserves measured in billions of tons. Oolitic limonite-chamosite-siderite ores of Cretaceous and younger age at Kerch on the Black Sea and around the east and southern perimeter of the West Siberian basin constitute some of the largest concentrations of iron in the world. These sedimentary ores are low grade, of poor quality and difficult to beneficiate. Banded jasper magnetite and hematite iron-formation in volcanic rocks of Devonian age in Kazakhstan and along the Mongolian border are of special geoloica1 significance.Iron deposits in the Krivoy Rog and Kursk areas were examined and a large number of geologists discussed their work on deposits in many other parts of the Soviet Union during the writer's seven-week study tour of mines and research institutes in Moscow, Leningrad, Novosibirsk in Siberia and Kiev in the Ukraine. The descriptive geology of iron deposits of useable ore and of marginal material has been well documented in the course of systematic work and a large number of scientists are studying fundamental problems on the origin and treatment of iron ore."

"The U.S. Geological Survey and Natural Resources Canada conducted a study on the net import reliance of each North American country, and the impact of North American trade on the net import reliance of 12 nonfuel mineral commodities that are associated with advanced technology products: cadmium, cobalt, gallium, germanium, graphite, indium, lithium, nickel, rare earth elements, selenium, silver and tellurium. The combined results for North America, using 2014 data, showed greatly reduced net import reliance for nearly all of the commodities evaluated, which is largely the result of pooling the resources of production and recovery in Canada and Mexico of materials that are consumed in the United States. This study highlights the mitigation of potential supply risk for critical materials that results from trade within the North American trade bloc. IntroductionMultiple metrics and definitions exist for what constitutes a critical material, but there is broad acknowledgment that a mineral commodity may be considered critical if, among other factors, its production is geographically concentrated, if it has few or no substitutes, or if the country of origin is politically unstable. Numerous governmental and independent researchers have proposed methods of investigating criticality, with differing priorities such as economic resilience or strategic military supplies (European Commission, 2014; Graedel et al., 2015; U.S. National Science and Technology Council Subcommittee on Critical and Strategic Mineral Supply Chains, 2016). While criticality really depends on who is asking the question, and despite the differing priorities, there are several commodities that are commonly found to be of concern. In particular, some critical or potentially critical materials are used increasingly in advanced technologies, or they have complicated supply chains because they are coproduced or are produced in controlled markets.Commodities for which imports are required to satisfy domestic demand are those for which the importing country is net import reliant. This paper will detail the work that has been done in 1990 and 1991 at the Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center (PETC) on the development of the U.S. Department of Energy&apos;s (DOE) patented Micro-Mag Process. This process entails the use of a micronized-magnetite (minus-10 microns) and water mixture for cleaning fine coal (minus-600 microns) in a cyclone, along with the production and recovery of the magnetite. Emphasis will be on the results from micronized-magnetite recovery testing using both conventional wet-drum and high-gradient magnetic separators in which several key operating conditions were varied including feed percent solids, magnetite-to-coal ratio, magnetite grade, and feed rate. Also presented will be selected results from testing done on a 76-mm diameter cyclone at a relative density of 1.50 showing the effects of operating pressure, magnetite grade, and medium-to-coal ratio on separation efficiency. In addition, two methods for producing micronized magnetite, along with the corresponding size distributions, will also be discussed.

A blast vibration model has been developed that simulates effects of almost all blast design parameters on the blast vibration peak particle velocity (PPV) from a production blast with multiple blastholes at a given point of interest in the rock. The velocity of detonation (VoD), initiation points, explosive types (density, VoD, energy), charge decoupling, and decking in each blasthole are simulated along with other blast design parameters. The information from signature hole blast vibration and the blast design are the input to the model. The model can be used to assess blast damage in proximity of blastholes as well as far field vibration PPV.

Sensor-based sorting methods to remove waste or for upgrading ore prior to downstream metallurgical processing is becoming more prevalent for mining operations. X-ray transmission (XRT) sorters are a popular choice for mineral processing plants since they can sort a wide variety of minerals. XRT sorters pass high intensity X-rays through particles to generate images of varying greyscale, based on their effective atomic density. The ore sorter then mechanically separates the particles using algorithms based on the images. A popular test currently used to evaluate the amenability of the ore to XRT sorting is to pass the particles through the sorter and obtain the greyscale images showing mineralogical differences. This test provides information on the mineralogical heterogeneity between ore particles for their separation. However, it does not provide an understanding of the actual mineralogical composition of the ore or information pertaining to which other minerals may respond in a similar manner, nor does it provide liberation information. This paper describes a test that combines high resolution X-ray micro Computer Tomography (CT) combined with QEMScan to obtain information about amenability of ore to XRT sorting and to obtain valuable information that can streamline metallurgical testwork programs. This test also provides information relating to particle thickness and associated X-ray attenuation coefficients, desired mineral presence and mineralogical information relating to associated minerals and clays to assist with developing sorting algorithms. Combining the CT and QEMScan can address many limitations of the current method to determine whether XRT sorting technology is appropriate for particular ores. Mineralogy information from QEMScan can identify incidences of; mineral encapsulation, problematic clays, detrimental minerals as well as calibrate the greyscale values of CT data. Additional 3D CT imaging carried out on cores provides spatial information of the minerals within the ore and mineral grades.

This paper presents bench blasting designs based on results of vibrations analysis on test shots organized in an open pit coal mine located near to Soma district at Manisa province in Turkey. There are some structures which can be adversely affected by blasting at the coal mine. The one of the main goals of this study is to perform a preliminary assessment of possible damage effect of ground vibrations induced by blasting at these structures by risk analysis based on ground vibration measurements. During this investigation, the data pairs of scaled distance and particle velocity obtained from the 36 event records belong to 9 test shots were statistically analyzed and a PPV prediction equation specific to this site with 95% prediction line were obtained. And also, this equation was used in the derivation of the practical blasting charts specific to this site as a practical way of predicting the peak particle velocity and maximum charge per delay for future blasting. A risk analysis was performed by using this equation. In the light of this analysis, preliminary blast design model was proposed to be used in this coal mine for overburden excavation.

"In recent years, the demand for measures to control liquefaction of existing airport runways and harbor structures has increased. However, from the perspectives of constructability and cost, application of grid-form deep mixing walls to these types of structures requires the formation of wider grid spacing as compared with conventional designs. In this research, we focused on the extent of liquefaction and ground surface settling when grid spacing is made wider than conventional designs. We conducted centrifuge model tests, and confirmed the liquefaction suppression effect when grid-form modifications involving wide grid spacing are adopted under asphalt pavement. The tests were conducted under conditions that included changing the grid spacing and groundwater level. When the groundwater level was high, an increase in water pressure was observed, even within the grid. However, when the groundwater level was low, the increase in water pressure inside the grid was suppressed. We also found that if the generation of water pressure can be suppressed, the amount of settling due to liquefaction can also be controlled.INTRODUCTIONOne construction technique used as a countermeasure to liquefaction is grid-form deep mixing walls. Grid-form deep mixing walls are a construction technique for which improved grid-shaped wall bodies are built into the ground below the surface using a deep mixing method. This construction technique minimizes shear deformation by surrounding liquefied ground with improved wall bodies, thereby preventing liquefaction (Fig.1). With conventional designs, grid-form deep mixing walls determine the grid spacing that can deter liquefaction based on a ratio of the grid spacing L to the improved depth H (ratio = L/H). Ordinarily, designs are implemented with an L/H ratio of 0.8 or less (PWRI, 1999).In recent years, a demand for measures to control liquefaction of existing airport pavement and harbor structures has increased. However, when liquefaction countermeasures are implemented at these types of facilities and structures, the construction work must be implemented while the facilities and structures remain in service. Therefore, temporal and spatial constraints must be considered. In addition, unlike conventional liquefaction countermeasures, performance requirements are such that, even if some degree of liquefaction is allowed, the performance is acceptable as long as the amount of settlement is within a predetermined value. Therefore, if grid-form deep mixing walls are applied to these structures, grid spacing that is wider than conventional standards is desired."

The following is a description of the methods used in rescuing men and extinguishing the underground fire at the Pennsylvania mine, Butte, Mont. , This fire, which cost the lives of 21 men, began about 9 p.m., Feb. 14, 1916, at or near a ventilating fan on the 1,200 air-shaft station. This shaft at that time was downcast, while the main hoisting shaft was upcast. Owing to the proximity of the fire to the air shaft, the air in the latter soon became heated, and as the fan on the level was not running— the power having been cut off shortly after the outbreak of the fire—the air shaft became upcast to the 300 level. At this point a blanket of cold air from the surface caused the smoke and gases to be drawn in on that level and carried down again through the workings to the 1,200. A short time after the discovery of the fire, water was turned down the air shaft through a series of pipes around the collar of the shaft, which caused the smoke to recede below the 300, so that within 2 hr. it was possible to search that level for the missing men. From the above it will be apparent why the air shaft was upcast instead of downcast, as under normal conditions, and why men were suffocated at considerable distances from the seat of the fire. The smoke and gases that came up the main hoisting shaft did not diffuse through the workings to any extent. There are doors on all levels in the connections to the main hoisting and air shafts, but in the confusion and running around many of these doors were left open, and this undoubtedly caused the smoke and gases to spread more rapidly than they would otherwise have done. It was necessary for most of the men on the various levels to pass close to the air shaft in going to the hoisting shaft, and when they encountered the smoke and gases in that vicinity a number turned back and climbed down with the direction of the air currents and were then suffocated, while all those who passed through the pall of smoke to the main shaft were saved. There were 220 men in the mine that night, and all but 25 were hoisted to the surface within 30 min. after the discovery of the fire. During the author’s 25+ year career in mine management in various parts of the world (mostly in Australia), the author has been privileged to live and work in mining towns (not FIFO) for more than 20 years. And has personally observed other people from the mining industry carrying out work at home in an unsafe manner, eg pushing lawn mowers whilst wearing thongs or performing electrical jobs whilst standing on aluminium ladders, as well as many others. It is common that injuries sustained at home whilst on break are not reported upon arrival back on a mine site. A large number of compensation claims for injuries at work, which in fact had been sustained at home, come at substantial extra costs to mining companies.

The Arab Potash Company, APC, is one of the 10 largest potash producers of the world. The solar ponds at the Dead Sea, used for the enrichment of the salt content in the brine, are of crucial importance for the first step in the exploitation of the potassium salt. Targeting at the expansion of production in the since over 50 years utilized facilities, the increase of the brine exploitation capacity, reducing the substantial brine seepage losses from the ponds, becomes a crucially required measure. In this context, the remediation measures on the over 11 km long Dyke 1, being a main dyke of the solar ponds system, became inevitable to reduce the brine losses, prevent further development of sinkholes and cavities and hence assuring the stability of the dyke. The highly aggressive environment, the acting hydraulic conditions and the sensitive stratification and nature of the existing ground represented remarkable challenges for the design, as well as its implementation by the construction activities. Royal Haskoning developed a solution addressing the challenges above and targeting at a high sustainability of the executed structure, especially in view of the various geological and hydrological hazards repeatedly occurring in this Dead Sea region, including sinkholes of several meters by diameter and depth. The construction works, consisting of a cut-off wall, with depths reaching down to 31 m, were awarded to Bauer International FZE, a subsidiary of Bauer Spezialtiefbau GmbH. Upon the execution of the first section of 4.2 km length, additional sections were subsequently commissioned, also on further dykes, totaling to about 300,000 m² of cut-off wall. The specific project conditions, such as utilization of cutter technique for the excavation in Halite rock, the stability of open trench exposed to hydrostatic pressure of salt-saturated ground water, resulted in unconventional requirements towards the supporting fluid. The extremely aggressive saline conditions –with a Dead Sea water density of 1.25 tons/m3; one of the world's saltiest water–, were further a decisive factor for the definition of the backfill material concept. Despite its clear advantage for construction of cut-off walls with installed sheet piles, the single-phase system with hardening slurries, fulfilling both functions of excavation support and cut-off wall backfill material, had to be abandoned in favor of the two-phase system, to construct a hybrid cut-off wall made of sheet piles and plastic concrete.

Gentlemen: I am pleased and regard it as a priviledge to give you a report on rapid roadheading with heading machines in the coal mining industry of Western Germany. Importance of Heading Operations in the West German Coal Mining Industry Every year about 770 km of headings are driven In the seams of the West German coal mines, most of them gate roads, the rest rise headings, to open new faces. In thick seams the heading operations are carried out entirely in the coal, in thin seams the country rock has to be ripped. The total length of 770 km corresponds to a rock volume of roughly 9.5 million m3; this figure underlines the importance of the heading operations in the coal mining industry of our country.

The United States Forest Service, as a land managing agency, is responsible for the surface administration of National Forest lands. The basic objectives of management are protection and utilization of renewable resources such as water, forage, timber, wildlife, recreation, and clean air. Much of the National Forest land in this country is open to mineral prospecting and development. When large de-posits of minerals are extracted from the forest environment, especially by surface methods, there are oftentimes conflicts between accepted mining methods and the objectives of other resource management goals. Such is the situation in Southeast Idaho where several members of the phosphate industry are operating on and adjacent to the Caribou National Forest. In 1966, the phosphate industry and the Caribou National Forest became mutually concerned with the problems of rehabilitating mined areas and minimizing potential damage to adjacent forest areas. A Cooperative Administrative Study was initiated with industry supporting the Forest Service financially and with equipment, material, and manpower, as well as interest and enthusiasm. The objectives of the study are to provide basic, applicable information pertinent to: 1. Protecting the quality of water emanating from mined water-sheds. 2. Providing for soil stabilization on mined areas. 3. Returning mined areas to surface resource production. 4. The feasibility of making mined areas esthetically acceptable. It was concluded that the following separate--yet intergrated--fields should be studied in order to obtain the desired information:

Papers presented at a U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) technology transfer seminar describe the causes of violent material failure in U.S. mines, measurement techniques for monitoring events that result in violent failure, and mitigation techniques for controlling failure. Specific factors contributing to violent failure are identified on the basis of geotechnical monitoring in 16 U.S. hard-rock and coal mines and on statistical analyses of 172 coal bump events. New monitoring and analysis techniques developed as tools for assessing violent failure; geotomographic methods that provide new capabilities for the study of material failure and stress changes over large areas; and seismic methods for determining source locations, calculating energy release, and determining source mechanisms are described. Fair correlations have been established among seismic parameters, elastic stresses, face support load, and violent events. USBM studies have identified the advantages using both yielding and stable pillars for coal bump control. A computer program has been developed as an aid for selecting room-and-pillar layouts. The practical aspects of implementing a destressing program is outlined for coal mines, while the importance of mine orientation and timely support installation in controlling buckling-type failure is identified for hard-rock mines.
