"The National Academy of Sciences (1) recognized the importance of studying the spatial and temporal characteristics of respirable coal mine dust atmospheres. In this paper, the progress to date of a research project on dust transportation and deposition in mine airways is presented. A mathematical model is proposed for studying the transport of dust. A source representative of dust generation in underground coal mining is defined. The influence and applicability of surface roughness, dispersivities, coagulation and reentrainment to vine dust flow arc examined. A convective-diffusion model is proposed for the transport and deposition of dust in mine airways. Using the model, the spatial and temporal characteristics can be evaluated in terms of dust concentrations in the mine atmospheres.INTRODUCTIONThe prediction of the behavior of fine particles Is Important in many fields of science and engi¬neering including physics, chemistry, mining, mineral processing, and atmospheric science. In mining from the health point of view, fine coal dust is associated with the appearance of pneumoconiosis in miners exposed to the dust. Also, in addition to being a nuisance factor obscuring visibility and general mobility of miners, it can lead to sudden catastrophic incidences of explosions. This paper outlines the progress to date of a research project on dust transportation and deposition in mine airways. A mathematical model is proposed for studying the transport of dust for the various mechanisms. The dust dispersion is defined in terms of a dispersion term determined from experimental data by Skubunov (23). Coagulation is considered as one of the mechanisms that can lead to changes in the particle size distribution. Reentrainment as a possible secondary source of dust was examined during model development but was not included in the final model."

Specific C02-emissions are given for the production of silicon-metal, ferrosilicon, ferromanganese and silicomanganese. Emissions taken into account come from reduction materials, from coke production and generation of electric energy. C02-emissions can be abated by direct and by indirect methods. A direct method is to replace fossil carbon as reduction material wholly or partially by endogenous carbon (biocarbon, charcoal). Another possibility is to produce metals by electrolysis instead of the present electric smelting furnace. Indirectly CO2-emissions can be reduced by energy recovery, thus saving coal, oil or natural gas for heat generation. Some reduction in global C02-emissions can be obtained by giving credit for the use of silica dust partially replacing cement in concrete. In addition to give an overview of possible methods, costs will be discussed.

Poor visibility of powered industrial vehicles, such as forklifts, used in industry is often the cause of accidents that include pedestrians. Current standards allow up to 20 % non-visible regions for forklifts where measurement of these regions is performed by using lamps. A collaboration of research organizations, including National Institute of Standards and Technology, Georgia Institute of Technology (NIST), and Direct Dimensions, has been evaluating advanced methods for measuring a forklift operator?s visibility. These methods can potentially improve visibility standards. They can also help forklift and sensor manufacturers to determine (1) how visibility-assist sensors and algorithms can be designed and (2) where sensors can be mounted on forklifts. This paper includes explanation of visibility measurement experiments performed and results, associated language suggested to standards organizations, and a prototype design for measuring the visibility of forklifts automatically.

"Continuous pressure filtration is a modern process for the mechanical dewatering of flotation concentrates of coal and similar coal slurries. This method will give a lower moisture content than classical vacuum filtration, the improvement lying in the range 5% to 15%. Eighteen coal slurries have been examined in this survey. They are representative of a wide spectrum of filtered slurries. IntroductionDuring the last five years, a number of coal slurries have been tested either in the laboratory or with a pilot plant. The test pressure ranged from one to six bar. The results have been evaluated by mean s of a computer. Determination of the filter capacity and the resulting moisture content and energy consumption has been made with respect to the continuous pressure filter, Amafilter construction-type KDF (Fig. I) . Standard sizes of these filters are 60 m2, 90 m2 and 120 m2.The continuous pressure filter is a horizontal filter with a level tank. Six filter axles are mounted on a rotating main shaft, each with a particular number of elements attached. The elements rotate on their axes and move along a circular trajectory. Periodically the elements submerge into and emerge out of the slurry. A constant air pressure is maintained above the suspension, thus providing the pressure gradient necessary for filtration. The filtrate together with the dewatering air flows through the elements into the hollow axle and out of the filter."

Rock-breaker automation and remote operation improves the safety and efficiency of mining operations. This article presents an overview of the Rocklogic rock-breaker automation system architecture that provides collision avoidance, automated parking, and remote operation functionality. The system consists of a distributed computer control system that interfaces with sensors attached to the rock-breaker, the rock-breaker hydraulics, and the site infrastructure. We present results of an automated Transmin rockbreaker installed in a production environment at an underground Australian mine site. The system has been in production use for over 900 days during which there have been no reported collisions, and 100% adoption of the remote operation technology. As a result, Rocklogic has significantly improved the safety of rock-breaking operations and reduced the rock-breaking cycle time, thereby improving the sites overall throughput.

The slag was attempted to be converted into the adsorbent for phosphate removal from aqueous solution using the alkali fusion method. The slag was mixed with NaOH powder (NaOH / Slag = 1.6), and then the mixture was heated at 600 ? for 6 h to prepare the precursor. The precursor was stirred at room temperature in distilled water to synthesize the adsorbent, and the removal ability of the obtained adsorbent for phosphate from aqueous solution was investigated. The products, including hydrocalumite and calcite, were synthesized, and the removal efficiencies of the adsorbent for F- and PO43- showed higher than those of raw BF slag, especially removal of PO43- are excellent (99 %), while the removal of Cl- , SO42-, NO3- and Br- was minor. The adsorbent could remove PO43- selectively in the co-existing solution of Cl-, NO3-, F-, SO42- and Br-.The equilibrium adsorption capacity of the adsorbent for PO43- was extrapolated using Langmuir and Freundlich models, and experimental data are found to fit Langmuir than Freundlich. The calculated maximum adsorption capacity of the adsorbent for PO43- is higher than other adsorbent reported previously. The high affinity of the adsorbent for PO43- in aqueous solution was caused by the formation of hydroxyapatite [Ca5(PO4)3(OH)] and brushite [CaHPO4?2H2O]. "Abstract - Africa is endowed with a number of the world's giant ore deposits which have contributed significantly to the development of their host countries. Mineral exploration has a long history in the continent, but mining on an unprecedented scale took off during the latter part of the 19th century, accompanied by the development of lines of communication and other infrastructure to service the major mining centres .The ""Winds of Change"" which swept Africa in the 1950s and 1960s brought in new styles of government and economic management to a number of regions, often with demise of economic viability and infrastructure. ln recent years, with the end of the cold war, collapse of communism and changes in South Africa, new opportunities for mineral exploration are opening up rapidly in Africa. However, due to the large cost, long lead-in time, and high risk of developing new mineral ventures in the continent, it is necessary for the host countries to draft realistic and favorable mineral laws and fiscal codes in order to attract, and not deter, potential mineral investors.There will be an on-going role in mineral exploration throughout Africa for the artisanal miner, the smaller entrepreneurs and mining companies, exploration aid programs funded by the developed countries through African governments, as well as the major mining houses who have the resources to develop larger viable mineral deposits."

INTRODUCTION Every day mine management and mining personnel face the threat of a possible mine disaster or fire. Their ability to deal with such a situation safely and effectively depends on the level of emergency preparation developed and maintained. After conducting numerous informal evaluations or audits at different mine sites throughout West Virginia (as well as other states), the authors concluded that many mining operations are not prepared to handle a fire situation. The results of the audits indicate that while most mines are in compliance with federal and state legal regulations regarding levels of emergency equipment, water systems and training sessions, these levels - particularly in the area of fire training - are probably not sufficient to enable the mine employees to effectively combat a fire in its early stage. This paper will present the authors' recommendations for designing and maintaining an efficient mine emergency preparedness Program and an overview of the curriculum of the mine fire training Program currently being conducted. MINE EMERGENCY FXEPAREDNESS PROGRAM The Mine Emergency Preparedness Pro- gram (MEPP) is a management tool developed by the Mining Extension Service at West Virginia University and was designed to assist company personnel in effectively managing a mine emergency operation. The program goes beyond the traditional and required training of mine rescue teams by offering a complete emergency operations package. Included in MEPP are suggested approaches for training and organizing all personnel, ideas for developing plans of action concerning transportation, security and communications. The MEPP program may also be used as to assess present readiness levels. While the MEPP program is designed to address all types of emergency operations, the authors are convinced that emergencies involving mine fires are the ones of greatest concern and so are concentrating their efforts in that direction. Incidents where fires are involved seem to be increasing in frequency and are extremely costly to control if allowed to go beyond the incipient stages. Approximate equations were used to compute the radiant heating of float coal dust by approaching flames for various combinations of particle size, dust path length (flame travel distance), flame temperature, dust concentration, flame speed, and flame length. The computed values of degree of radiant heating and flame travel distance for preheating the coal dust should be useful for estimating the increased fire hazard of different coal dust-flame parameters. Some findings relating to coal mine disaster control are-- 1. Coal dust clouds cannot be preheated to ignition temperatures by flame radiation alone when deflagration speeds are greater than about 10 m/sec. Thus it appears unlikely that radiation alone will cause flames propagating in dust clouds to accelerate to detonation velocities. 2. Small particles in the radiation flame zone caused by burnout and soot formation increase the degree of preheat significantly. 3. The concentration of float coal dust (radii = 3 to 40 microns) for maximum radiant heating usually peaks in the range 50 to 200 mg/liter of air.

INTRODUCTION The objective of this chapter is to inform the industry, as well as the public, of the challenges in dealing with problems associated with air and water contamination by coal preparation plants. The need for an informed industry is most important. It is hoped that some contribution may be given to a more efficient and economical approach to the problems of plant waste contaminants at individual plants. The problem has many facets, and consideration should be given to specific areas before any significant problems develop at a given plant. It is then possible to have a reasoned approach before the pressures of an emergency environment force hasty and incomplete solutions. It will be necessary to anticipate these problems in the design of new preparation plants, and advance consideration should be given to all problems concerned with contaminants.

In arid and semi-arid areas evapotranspiration (ET) cover systems are often used to mitigate contaminated seepage from hazardous mine waste into the adjacent environment. The theory of ET covers is based on the water balance equation with the aim of minimising seepage. While cover systems are commonly trialled, the influences of variability in climate and cover structure on water balance equation parameters are seldom investigated.Water balance equation parameters and their variability were analysed for two ET cover trials constructed from benign waste rock in semi-arid Australia. Seasonal and inter-annual variations in rainfall critically influence cover performance. For successful cover system operation, the average return periods for higher than average rainfall should be taken into account. In addition, failure of ET covers has a higher probability in areas with marked rainfall seasonality. Water holding capacity and plant available water content are low in covers constructed from waste rock. Changes in water holding capacity due to variation in particle size distribution are likely and critically influence cover performance. The application of topsoil can be beneficial for water ingress control through run-off, but a balance has to be struck between run-off, erosion and plant available water. Changes in vegetation composition only influence evapotranspiration water losses at plant coverage exceeding 50 per cent, which is unrealistic in semi-arid areas. This study showed that the capacity of ET cover systems to hold and dispose of received rainfall is often lower than assumed by industry practitioners. Furthermore, in order to improve reliability of long term cover performance, the variability of rainfall and water holding capacity of the cover has to be included in water balance models.CITATION:Schneider, A, Baumgartl, T, Doley, D and Mulligan, D R, 2012. Introduction A subject long debated but rarely resolved involves the interaction between the academic community and industry in the sponsorship and conduct of research. The subject is, unfortunately, too often treated as a controversy involving ethics and the profit motive. But, in fact, the two branches of society - industry and academia - are necessarily part of the same system. In the last 25 years, the realization has developed that research alone is not sufficient to bring about use of those results to benefit society through productivity gains and economic growth. The flow of events shown in Fig. 1 was generally believed to be the steps required for reaping the benefits of research. Today, research still has the very important role of creating new information or new ideas. However, it is recognized to be but one of many steps in a process that we now refer to as technological innovation. Charpie (1967) said, "Technological innovation is the driving force behind economic growth in the US. In this context, innovation means the process by which a new idea is successfully translated into economic impact within our own society, by providing better products, and simultaneously creating new jobs in the manufacturing of those products. Only after an investigation is put into sufficient use to have an economic effect, is it termed an innovation." One of the best depictions of the technological innovation process is shown in Figs. 2 and 3. These are adapted from Haeffner (1975), and modified by the Committee on Mineral Technology of the National Research Council (1981). Figure 2 identifies the many steps involved in the process. It designates a generalized form for interaction between the academic community and industry. Figure 3 identifies the steps in the "innovation activity" box of Fig. 2. Academia is generally responsible for developing of new knowledge and ideas, as well as maintaining and enlarging the collected body of scientific knowledge. Industry is responsible for developing new products, methods, and processes. Both institutions operate for the benefit of society, but under different driving forces. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted experiments for predicting materials' ease of combustion (smoldering onset, smoldering, flaming, and decomposition rates) by means of submicrometer smoke particle characteristics for the development of a simple test method. The experiments were carried out in an approximately 20-L furnace, with a 10-L/min airflow through the furnace for a 14-min duration, at set furnace temperatures of 150°, 250°, and 1,000° C. The variables studied as a function of time were the onset time of smoke particles, time and duration of maximum smoke particle generation, average concentration of smoke particles, and particles' average diameter, mass weight loss, and furnace temperatures. Results show that the onset time of smoke particles is predictive of materials' ease of smoldering, and the time of maximum smoke particle generation and its duration, coupled with mass weight loss, are predictive of materials' ease of smoldering and flaming (depending on the experimental temperatures), and decomposition rates.

A model for development of electric discharges between particles of sulfide minerals (pyrite) under the action of high-voltage nanosecond pulses is proposed. It is shown that through discharges in a layer of pyrite particles lead to energy concentration in small contact regions between particles; the concentrated energy is sufficiently high for local disintegration of mineral complexes.

This report presents a complete qualitative picture of knowledge of the composition of petroleum as of April 1965. The material is presented in detail on two imaginative maps--one, the Hydrocarbon Hemisphere, depicts the hydrocarbons that have been identified in petroleum; the other, the Heterogeneous Hemisphere, shows the sulfur, nitrogen, and oxygen compounds that have been found. All compounds are placed on the maps according to boiling point. The accompanying text illustrates by structural formulas the several types of hydrocarbon and nonhydrocarbon compounds identified, presents some quantitative data, and points out the possible geochemical significance of a number of the compounds. With the exception of the work of Tammann and Hartmann,1 no published information has been found on the structural changes produced in eutectic structures as the result of heating following plastic deformation. In part this lack of information may be due to the fact that many eutectic structures contain an intermetallic compound as a prominent phase, and as a consequence have been considered to be unworkable. For example, Tammann and Hartmann were able to obtain useful data only on those alloys that they could greatly reduce in thickness by cold rolling. This restriction placed on the investigation of alloys containing intermetallic compounds has been largely removed by the work of Savitskii2 which showed that large deformations of such alloys can be produced by relatively slow compression at temperatures near the melting range. It was possible, therefore, to carry out the present work on a range of binary eutectics including one composed of two intermetallic compounds. The essential results obtained on the alloy systems studied are illustrated by the Pb-Mg eutectic containing 33.2 pct Mg, Fig 1. The cast structure, Fig la, was obtained by melting together magnesium of 99.8 pct purity and chemically pure test lead, casting into a heated, small steel mold, and furnace cooling in the mold from about the eutectic temperature. The fairly coarse eutectic structure thus obtained was too brittle to work at room temperature without cracking. Fig 16 shows the worked structure obtained by compressing a 1/2-in. cube 70 pct in about 15 sec at 550°F and then water quenching. The pronounced changes in the distribution of the two phases produced by heating the worked alloy at 850°F for 1 hr are shown in Fig lc. Recrystallization of both phases appears to have taken place, and the mechanical properties of the cast alloy must have been significantly changed by the working and heat treatment. Similar results were obtained with the Mg-59.5 pet Bi, Mg-36.4 pet Sn, Mg-65.4 pet Cu, and Bi-40 pet Cd eutectics, only the last of which could be worked at room temperature. Tammann and Hartmann reported a thickening and shortening of the needles of the eutectics which they heated about 10°C below the melting range for 1 hr after drastic cold rolling. They found the following eutectics, given the indicated amounts of reduc- tion, to have a granular structure after heat treatment: Sn-9 pet Zn (98 pet); Cd-82.5 pet Pb (60 pet); and Bi-43.5 pet Pb (90 pet). On the other hand the alloy Al-11.7 pet Si (60 pet) showed no change after heating. Tammann and Hartmann observed a distinct shrinking of the needles in unworked eutectics subjected to heat-treatment. In the present work inappreciable change in the eutectic structure was found on heating undeformed alloys. In summary, it appears that eutectic structures can be recrystallized into a "spheroidized" condition by heating near the eutectic temperature after severe deformation. If the eutectic contains one or more brittle phases the necessary deformation can be accomplished by pressing at high temperatures. It is reasonable to expect that this tendency towards equiaxed grains from the plate- or needle-like eutectic structure should be general since the energy relations and mode of growth in recrystallization are so different from those that hold for eutectic crystallization. The Bureau of Mines has been engaged in a continuing research effort to develop processes for increasing the recovery and utilization of fluorine from low-grade resources. This current research has shown that over 98 percent of the fluorine in phosphate rock is extracted when the ore is treated with excess phosphoric acid in the presence of water vapor at 150° to 180° C. More than 80 percent of the fluorine can be recovered as fluosilicic acid, which can then be converted to commercially useful hydrogen fluoride or fluorspar by previously developed Bureau processes. Extraction of P205 from the ore was about 98 percent in batch tests and 90 percent in semicyclic tests.

For critical velocities in gravel units we use Bush-Luckner, Sichardt, other empirical equations, and equations derived from laboratory experiments too. On the base of these, we compiled critical velocity - permeability coefficient dependencies. Under the lower border of these dependencies sand particles can't be moved, and thus they are stable. For critical velocities in the fissures of flysh and volcanic rocks we use Ronzhin (1974) criteria derived from laboratory experiments in Russia. Maximal filtration velocities measured by tracer methods in gravel soils and in fissured rocks have smaller values then the critical ones.
