"The Efemçukuru underground mine in western Turkey is an intermediate sulfidation, epithermal gold deposit. The bulk of the mineral resources and all of the mineral reserves lie within the Kestanebeleni (KB) vein system. This system comprises four spatially-distinct mineralised zones: the south ore shoot (SOS), the middle ore shoot (MOS), the north ore shoot (NOS) and the KB north-west ore shoot. Production currently occurs only in the SOS, MOS and NOS zones. The gold mineralisation is very fine grained and occurs as free grains in quartz and carbonate, and as inclusions in sulfide minerals. Gold is recovered as part of a sulfide concentrate by flotation methods. Though hosted in the KB vein, the gold mineralisation is not evenly distributed within the veins. Definition of its occurrence is totally dependent on diamond drilling.Diamond drilling at Efemçukuru is done with its own equipment and staff, all managed by the mine geology group. The process over the mine’s six year production history incorporates continual improvement with an innovative approach by focusing on the following: drill team organisation career development and training product research and effective equipment management cost reduction planning and scheduling of development for drill stations.Over 40 000 metres of mostly BQ size core are drilled annually by three drill rigs at a cost approaching US$35/m.The planning and execution of the drilling pattern depends on the configuration of the ore shoot and the planned mining method. Ore extraction is mainly by drift and fill mining augmented by about 15 per cent longhole stoping. The drilling of a specific area is scheduled to be finished 3 to 8 months prior to mining. In underground coal mining, the potential for an outburst of coal and gas is considered to be one of the major hazards. As such, considerable emphasis is given to understanding and preventing such events. A number of indices are used in the prediction of the outburst in a coal mine. The main indices include initial gas desorption rate, gas pressure, gas content, coal strength, gas flowrate from a borehole drilled in a coal seam, and combinations of the above. Some of these indices are considered to be inadequate, inappropriate or impractical for some coal seam conditions, such as those with soft and friable coal. The Huainan Mining Group (Huainan) in China and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) in Australia have been jointly developing gas content based technologies to predict the risk of the outbursts. One of the major progressive achievements is a new method for determination of outburst gas content threshold values. The method utilizes empirical analyses, numerical modeling, and seam-specific knowledge . This paper describes the method and its application for the #11 Seam at Guqiao mine, Huainan.

IF we follow the threads of the mining problems, upon which I have touched, we find them all leading to one great fundamental desideratum. The people of this State, of this Nation, and of this world must be brought to a better understanding of the basic nature of our industry-must be made more mineral-minded. It is my belief 'that there is not a man present among this earnest gathering of those interested in the mining industry, who has not a deep-seated and heartfelt desire that the existing unprecedented welfare and prosperity of the whole mass of American people be maintained not merely through our own generation but through the generations of our children and their children. In the decades to come there can be no question of the keenness of the foreign competition which we are doomed to meet, and in this great international contest that Nation which has the best balanced program of development and that broadness of vision in its governmental direction, which recognizes the necessity of a sympathetic attitude toward the upbuilding of such a broad pro- gram will be the Nation which will maintain and pre- serve that welfare of all of its people.

Field tests at a number of large mineral processing operations have been undertaken to better understand the wear life impact of different aspects of pump design, materials of construction and maintenance procedures. Data are presented for wear rates, and typical result variability is explored. To improve the availability of pumping equipment in a milling circuit it is not only important to improve the wear life, but also reduce the variability in the wear life of components so that the incidence of premature failure is lessened. Localised gouging wear due to flow separation and turbulent eddy formation is often the point at which part-holing occurs. A number of improvements to the design of pump impeller and throatbush (suction side liners) to reduce the localised gouging wear are outlined. Also, results are presented on the use of composite materials (mix of metal, rubber and ceramic) for throatbush materials to protect specific areas against wear.

In March 1937 the entire country was shocked by news of an explosion of gas in a New London (Tex.) schoolhouse, which resulted in the death of 280 pupils and 14 t eachers. The Government investigators of this disaster believed that the cause was the ignition and explosion of a large volume of explosive natural gas-air mixture that had accumulated in a poorly ventilated space beneath the first floor of the main school building and that this accumulation was due to leakage from gas lin suspended underneath the floor to carry the gas supply to the school.!i/ For some years there has been a potential explosion hazard in school houses and other buildings that are supplied with water from deep wells in certain parts of Illinois. Notwi thstand.ing the disaster at New London, Tex., and the fact that there had been gas ignitions at four water wells in different parts of the State, the explosion hazard in schools and other buildings was not fully recognized until a few months after the disaster in Texas, when an explosion occurred in the settling basin of the municipal water works of Clinton, Ill., and another in a pump house of the municipal water works in Normal, Ill, The explosion in the settling tank of the municipal water works in Clinton, Ill., occurred on August 12, 1937, and a.id considerable damage to the settling tank, but fortunately no one was injured. At the time of this explosion rapairs'and aJ.terations to the water plant were in progress, and 10 men were employed in the immediate vicinity of the settling tank. Two of these men were enlarging a hole in the concrete side with an air hammer for the installation of a larger discharge line.

"As the bulk handling sector continues its transformation to Industry 4.0, the mining industry, and its harsh working and environmental conditions, provides a perfect spot to study the feasibility of remote analysis and maintenance of the components used for bulk handling. The most important and expensive tools have been adapted to the digital era in recent years, from remotely controlled haul trucks to monitored conveyor belts.However, the big items of the installations rely on smaller parts that have been leftaside, mainly due to the difficultyof adapting them to the Internet ofThings (IoT).The paradigmatic example is the lack of monitored rollers, while all the other components of the conveyorbelt installations (the belt itself, motors, drums, etc.) were monitored some time ago. The main problem is that a failure of a single roller can cause the stoppage of the entire conveyor, due to possible damage to the belt. Thus, the implementation of an integral monitoring system of all the components of the conveyor is a must.The research and development department of ULMA Conveyor Components has been working since early 2012 on the development of monitored rollers, testing all the problems until their final installation in different demanding conditions, from the extreme heat in Australia to the freezing cold of Norway. All the tests have been done under actual working conditions, in real installations and have provided valuable knowledge in the identification of problems, their solutions and the final advantages of a roller monitoring system.Background and current stateThe malfunction of a single roller in certain conveyor belts can force the standstill of the entire installation until its replacement, due to the risk of greater and more expensive failures, such as a rip in the belt. In the case of a bulk handling installation, where a continuous supply of material is necessary, an unexpected stop of one hour could result in huge economic losses."

"The main purpose of geometallurgy is to develop a model to predict the variability in the mineral processing performance within the ore body. Geometallurgical tests used for developing such a model need to be fast, practical and inexpensive and include as an input data relevant and measureable geological parameters like elemental grades, mineral grades and grain size. Important in each geometallurgical program is to define the number of samples needed to be sent for geometallurgical testing to enable reliable metallurgical forecast. This is, however, a complicated question that does not have a generic answer.To study the question on sampling a simulation environment was built including a synthetic ore body and sampling & assaying module. A synthetic Kiruna type iron oxide - apatite deposit was established based on case studies of Malmberget ore. The synthetic ore body includes alike variability in rock types, modal mineralogy, chemical composition, density and mineral textures as its real life counterpart. The synthetic ore body was virtually sampled with different sampling densities for a Davis tube testing, a geometallurgical test characterising response in magnetic separation. Based on the test results a forecast for the processing of the whole ore body was created. The forecasted parameters included concentrate tonnages, iron recovery and concentrate quality in terms of iron, phosphorous and silica contents.The study shows that the number of samples required for forecasting different geometallurgical parameters varies. Reliable estimates on iron recovery and concentrate mass pull can be made with about 5-10 representative samples by geometallurgical ore type. However, when the concentrate quality in terms of impurities needs to be forecasted, the sample number is more than 20 times higher. This is due to variation in mineral liberation and shows the importance of developing techniques to collect qualitative information on mineral and ore textures in geometallurgy."

Mavkers ill a diffusion couple in the iron-chromium system move towards the high chromium side indicating Dcr > DFe at the marker composition. By a combituztion of measurements of D& and D a: a function of composition, this is also shown independently. DFe is calculated as a function of composition. and shown to be in reasonable agreement with measured values by other workers. MEASUREMENTS of marker movements in diffusion couples have been used from time to time to demonstrate that a vacancy or interstitial mechanism may be operative. Since there is a possibility that ring diffusion1 may be operative in chromium, the present experiments are of interest in showing some non-ring mechanism in iron-chromium alloys around the equiatomic composition. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The movement of markers originally at the interface between 1-in. sq sections of pure Cr (6 mm thick) and outer slabs of 30 Cr-70 Fe alloy was followed as a function of time at temperatures from 1150" to 1425"C, in a Kanthal-wound furnace. Temperature control was +5°C over extended periods. The analyses of these alloys are given in Table I. Selection of suitable markers presented a considerable experimental problem; the eventual solution was to draw quartz rod down to 0.01 cm and seat this in V-grooves 0.01 cm deep on each side of the chromium prior to welding. A preliminary experiment in which the groove was machined in the alloy gave identical results. Welding was accomplished by passing a heavy current through specimens under moderate pressure in a helium atmosphere. This method produced good welds with a planar interface as shown by subsequent metallo-graphic investigation. Any markers which did not adequately fill their groove and showed subsequent contamination from the atmosphere during heat treatment were not considered reliable. The composite sample was ground and metal-lographically polished on the four sides perpendicular to the interface. Fiducial marks (deep milled slots) were made outside the diffusion zone to check on total volume change. All necessary measurements were made on a metallograph reading to +0.0005 cm. The samples were wrapped in tantalum foil and given diffusion anneals for times to 200 hr in carefully purified dry hydrogen in a sealed McDanel porcelain tube. Chromium-zirconium chips were introduced near the specimen as an additional getter. The specimens were cooled relatively slowly after the diffusion anneal to preserve the McDanel tube but no significant error in effective time at temperature was thereby introduced. At least 1 mm was ground off the surface before measurements were taken. It was observed that the grain size following short diffusion anneals was several mm and was appreciably larger in the 30 Cr alloy than in the pure Cr. No significant grain boundary penetration was present as indicated by the etch limit. The results are presented in the next section. "On the basis that 99% of the energy input into a mill is converted into heat, it is possible to estimate the amount of energy captured in the slurry, the amount that is lost to the environment as well as the possible means to reduce such losses. As a result it becomes possible to estimate the potential amount of energy that can be captured by technologies such as thermoelectric generators or even Sterling engines. Furthermore, it has been suggested that the energy recovery potential dry grinding circuit could be as high as twice that of wet grinding circuits.In this paper, the energy recovery potential of dry grinding will be explored by examining the case of the Newmont Carlin mine dry grinding circuit. The paper will open with a review of the energy recovery potential of a few wet grinding applications followed by a description of the dry grinding circuit and a definition of the control volume around that circuit. A thermodynamic model will be used to estimate the circuit discharge temperature and an estimate of any losses as well as provide an estimate of the potential impact of different means to reduce energy losses. The paper will close with a discussion of the assumptions used in model development."

With the advent of the Clean Air Act and the installation of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) equipment (scrubbers) on coal fired power plants, the management of solid wastes has taken on added importance. Aside from the large amounts of fly ash and bottom ash usually generated, large quantities of liquids in the form of scrubber sludge are also produced. These wastes must be disposed of within the constraints of land and water quality regulations. This paper describes the practices adopted by the electric utility industry in denting with this problem, including methods of generation and treatment, quantities and characteristics of the materials, and transportation and disposal practices. The paper also briefly describes final product characteristics and several applications for commercial utilization and land reclamation.

Mines are typically located in remote, inhospitable locations and movement of materials between site, processor and port are often at risk from extreme weather events. Mining companies have recorded multiple supply chain, production and logistics delays caused by climatic events. Recent analyses of extreme temperature and rainfall events (90th and 99th percentile values) for 1960 to 1985 and 1986 highlighted regionalised increases in the frequency and intensity of extremes. The trajectory of this change is likely to be maintained (IPCC, 2014) in regions where increases have occurred historically, suggesting that some parts of the industry may be faced with management challenges beyond current experience (Hodgkinson et al, 2010; Loechel, Hodgkinson and Moffat, 2012). Reliance on historical data to plan for extremes (such as scheduling production downtime to reduce impact) will become increasingly ineffective as the data become less representative of future conditions. Importantly, mine site remediation and closure management need to consider the future climate to ensure rehabilitation is sustainable under changing conditions.Vulnerability assessments and risk-reducing adaptation will become more common as the industry reaches to secure both a mine’s longevity and the industry’s reputation as shareholders and clients become less tolerant of repeated or prolonged interruptions (Hodgkinson, Hobday and Pinkard, 2014). Climate-resilient new mines may be planned using site planning tools combined with knowledge of future climate scenarios. Precrusher stockpiles are designed principally as buffers to decouple the mining and processing operations. They are usually paddock dumped or dumped over a face to form fingers by dumping haul truckloads and reclaimed by front-end loader in an ad hoc manner. In addition, they are often not built and reclaimed to completion but continually added to and extracted from. While this design suits the mining process and is operationally simple, there can be little confidence in the grade of the ore that is fed to the crusher. This makes short-term grade control difficult and reconciliation back to the mine face imprecise. Well-designed and operated precrusher stockpiles can overcome these deficiencies.The different types of grade variability in mining are reviewed in this paper. The role of precrusher stockpiles in reducing short-term variability is discussed and their ineffectiveness in addressing long-term variability is highlighted. Their role in removing the serial correlation of the extracted ore is explained.Precrusher stockpiles carry out the four, at times competing, objectives of storing, buffering, blending and grade separation. Their actual design and operation result from a compromise between these four competing roles. These roles are explained in detail along with the advantages and disadvantages of the different types of precrusher stockpiles. The recommended blended-in blended-out stockpile (BIBO) design is discussed in detail. Matched pairs of BIBO stockpiles of limited tonnage built and reclaimed to completion retain the best knowledge of grade and facilitate the reconciliation process.Simulation studies have been carried out on BIBO stockpiles to understand the blending opportunities of the different options for building and reclaiming, and to identify the methods that achieve maximum blending. It was found that laying down rows in one direction and reclaiming across these rows gives the best blending. Matching the width of the reclaim face with the daily crushing requirements is also important. The length of the rows, and building in either one or two layers has little effect on the extent of blending.Appropriate design can provide a reasonable compromise between the four objectives.CITATION:Jupp, K, Howard, T J and Everett, J E, 2013. Sublimation of ZrCl4 is important for the production of nuclear grade metallic Zr in Kroll’s process. The sublimation kinetics of ZrCl4 was investigated by TGA under both isothermal and non-isothermal conditions. The sublimation rate of ZrCl4 increased with increasing temperature under isothermal conditions. ZrCl4 sublimation was confirmed to be a zero-order process under isothermal conditions, whereas it was first-order kinetics under non-isothermal conditions. The activation energy of ZrCl4 sublimation under isothermal conditions was 21.7 kJ/mol. The activation energy for non-isothermal sublimation was 101.4 kJ/mol and 108.1 kJ/mol with the Kissinger method and Flynn- Wall-Ozawa method, respectively. These non-isothermal activation energies were very close to the heat of sublimation (103.3 kJ/mol). Sublimation occurs by two elementary steps: surface reaction and desorption. Therefore, the overall activation energy of ZrCl4 sublimation is 104.8(±3.4) kJ/mol. The activation energy of the surface reaction and desorption steps are proposed to be 83.1 kJ/mol and 21.7 kJ/mol, respectively.

PHILIP NORTH MOORE was born on July 8, 1849, at Connersville, Ind. His father, a civil engineer, was descended from Henry Moore who came from Ireland in 1773 to live in Washington, Pa. Through his mother, Philip Moore was descended from John North, who came to America in 1635 and settled in Connecticut. The story of Mr. Moore's life as told by himself is given on pages 373-386 of T. A. Rickard's "Interviews with Mining Engineers." He studied at Miami University, where he gained the degree of A.B. in 1870, and A.M. in 1873. In 1920 his alma muter conferred on him the honorary degree of LL.D. He, as a special student, was a member of the class of 1872 at the School of Mines of Columbia University.

Limited experiments in the laboratory with specimens of mine rock from a Virginia bituminous coal mine indicate that natural gas-air mixtures can be ignited by sparks generated by rubbing friction of sandstone against sand-stone, shale against sandstone, sandstone against (roof-bolt) steel, and shale against steel. Such sparks, generated during a roof fall, may have initiated a recent gas explosion in this Virginia mine, although this cannot be stated with certainty. No ignitions of gas were produced by sparks or heat generated by impact friction between mine rocks or steel, during tension breaks of roof bolts, or by pull tests of roof bolts through their washers and roof plate. However, this negative result of limited experiments does not preclude the possibility of gas being ignited by these conditions.

The main direction in the mechanisation in the mines of the Donbas and the USSR is long-face technology with complexes on the base of hydraulic supports. On the base of the 30 year old experience of exploitation of the coal clearing systems the serious data about the behaviour of the contained rock, display of underground pressure 'on longwalls and preparatory workings have been accumulated. Exploitation works in mines of the USSR are carried out at different depths: from 1000m to 1200m. There are 26 mines in Donbas, which exceed the depth of 1000m. It is the mines of Donbas, where is a rich experience of the exploitation of coal seams in various conditions. Besides, there are wide variations on the factors of the extraction thickness, depth of seam, angle of dip, occurrence of gas dynamics and others. In many scientific establishments, and in Donetsk Polytechnical Institute also, there are scientific research/results, which can be of interest for the coal mining countries.The volume of coal mining from longwall system-mechanised walls in Donbas became stable at the end of the 70s at level of 70 percent. All the efforts to increase this level have not given any notable results, not saying about the technical-economical data, which gradually deteriorate. It shows that positive progress in using the technology for the long walls is over and it is necessary to find new ways of mechanisation of coal winning.

The effect of temperature on the cutting forces during machining of alumina reinforced aluminum composites was investigated, Aluminum 6061, 10% Al2O3 reinforced composite and 20% Al2O3 reinforced composite were tested, A 5/8-inch diameter high-speed steel end mill, a Micro 100 TiN coated single edge endmill cutter and a two-fluted solid carbide insert cutter were used for tooling, The results, in general, showed an increase in the cutting forces as the temperature of the material increased, From the raw data, there are temperatures ranges in which the force data did decrease but they were insignificant with regards to predicting a downward trend. A regression analysis was used to understand which variables had the greatest affect on the forces being generated, The correlation and regression analysis showed that at 600 rpm (velocity: HSS- 98,2 sfpm, Micro 100 cutter - 78,5 sfpm, solid carbide cutter - 192,4 sfpm) the tooling, the workpiece material, built up edge, and temperature were statistically significant factors in the test, Tooling was a significant variable in all testing, The smallest forces recorded during machining were generated with the solid carbide two-fluted endmill cutter, Visually, the solid carbide tooling produced a better surface finish during the testing which made it the tool of choice, In addition, the force data proved that as the cutting speeds were increased, the cutting forces decreased.
