At its Copper Cliff Smelter, Vale Inco Limited processes a bulk copper-nickel concentrate in two Inco oxygen flash furnaces. Coke supplies a minor proportion of the process heat requirements, limiting the flash furnace matte grade to the target 45% CuNiCo. Coke addition to the furnace offers a potential means of establishing a reducing barrier on the surface of the molten bath. Such a practice would be conducive to producing sulfur deficient (partially metallized) matte. At the same iron content, the iron activity of sulfur deficient matte is higher than that of regular matte. A supernatant coke barrier could, therefore, be expected to lead to higher nickel and cobalt recoveries, reduction or even elimination of magnetite furnace bottom build-up and increased sulfur elimination as SO2 in the flash furnace. Extensive experiments were conducted in a miniplant flash furnace to investigate the effect on process metallurgy of the suggested modified scheme. The introduction and description of the experimental set up were given in Part 1 of this paper and an early paper published in Yazawa symposium1 together with the results and some in depth discussion on metallurgy. From the massive equipment that moves the earth, to the parts that keep the equipment moving, it was all on display for more than 35,000 people who at-tended MinExpo 2008 at the Las Vegas Convention Center Sept. 22-24. In the largest show in the illustrious history of MinExpo, the success of the recent commodity boom was reflected in the more than 55,700 hm2 (600,000 sq ft) of floor space that was jam-packed with nearly 1,300 vendors. Among them, the makers of the industry?s largest machines, displaying their latest and greatest trucks, shovels, excavators, drills and other mining equipment. During the nearly decade-long commodities boom, equipment makers have worked hard to keep up with demand while also investing heavily in research and development. The beneficiaries of this R&D is the end user who saw first-hand at MinExpo 2008 the many advances that have already been made in safety, comfort and productivity from all the manufacturers. R&D has also helped spark more talk of automation, which is being used already at some of the world?s largest mines. Caterpillar and Komatsu have worked with the technology in surface mining and Bucyrus and Sandvik are among the industry leaders applying the science of automation to underground mines. Technology has in-creased greatly since the idea of moving massive equipment remotely was first knocked around and the idea of entire fleets operating around the clock seems to be getting closer to reality. But, until that happens, MinExpo attendees were treated to a show that featured some of the most impressive current machines the industry has to offer. In the largest booth space of the convention, Caterpillar (www.cat.com) displayed the culmination of an ambitious $280-million dollar investment, with the introduction of its new mining fleet of four new trucks. The F-series was un-veiled with common features in safety, cabs, engines, frames and bodies and Tier 2 compliant engines. The F series also features a return to the electric drive option. ?When our customers asked us for improvements to our mining trucks, we responded by making a record investment in every single truck in our line, as well as the increased capacity to produce more of them,? said Cater-pillar group president Stu Levenick. ?New technologies have allowed us to make trucks more reliable, easier to maintain and more friendly to the operator and to the environment.? The 793-series is in the 218- to 227-t (240- to 250-st) class that will be available in both mechanical (793F) and electric (793F ac) versions. The electric drive-only 313- t (345-st) 795F was also introduced, while the flagship 797B truck is in the process of being replaced by the new 797F mechanical drive, maintaining its 345- to 363-t (380- to 400-st) target payload. Completing Caterpillar?s new mining truck line will be new versions of the 785 and 789 mechanical drive trucks. The next generation of trucks will be phased into production during the next two years, with the Cat ac drive models expected to go into production in late 2010. This paper presents some research results of pile foundation performance. Measurements on the bearing behaviour and driving effects of piles have been carried out during pile testing and pile driving. It has been found that the ratio of end resistance to the ultimate load depends on the pile length, and the ratio in general is less than 40% for single piles. However for pile group, the end resistance seems to be greater than skin friction. The characteristic curves of skin friction and end re­sistance appear as interaction between soils and pile. The contribution of skin friction to the pile bearing capacity not only depends on soil properties but also on the relative position of the soil layer. The pore pressure and the lateral pressure in ground have been observed during the stage of driving piles. Based on the available data, the radius of plastic region and the coefficient of pore pressure A can be found analytically. The pore pressure time process curves which may be used for practice have been predicted by means of numerical method.

"As the concept of autonomous haulage systems (AHS) moves from proto-types to production-ready applications, the operating performance of the haul road will become ‘mission critical’ to the overall success of autonomy in mining. Deterioration in road performance will require remediation, human intervention and significant, albeit temporary, changes to operating procedures, to accommodate road maintenance. With autonomous trucks comes the opportunity to reduce road formation and operating width, and therefore generating potentially significantly reductions in stripping ratios and improvements to mine economics, but only if the design of the road, and it’s associated deterioration rate, is predictable and manageable, based both on the materials used to construct the road and the maintenance interventions to be carried out on the road. This paper presents the assessment of a digital photogrammetric approach to the characterization of a mine haul road surfacing, or wearing course material. Design and maintenance parameters for these roads are currently determined from physical particle size distribution (PSD) assessments of ‘in-road’ material. However, this approach does not accommodate the need, nor leverage the benefits from, AHS. The digital imaging approach is assessed in this paper, using two standard digital analysis software tools, together with in-service mine haul road wearing course samples and images which are assessed to determine the applicability and reliability of the approach to deliver a real-time assessment of haul road surfacing conditions and thus to identify the road maintenance interventions required to address deterioration. INTRODUCTION Enhancements in mine road design, construction and management for the past 20 or more years has largely been focused on short-term tactical needs. These improvements have not been matched by advances in the fundamental technologies that underpin mine road design and management, and although the quality of mine roads have probably increased, many of fundamental and longer-term issues have yet to be addressed. With AHS’s evolving from prototype to production applications, any decision to implement these systems in a mine requires a thorough evaluation of impacts, not only operational improvements, but the inter-connectivity of this autonomy technology to other organizational processes. In developing an understanding, the full interactions that may affect autonomous truck behaviour due to changes in various sub-systems or external environments, haul road conditions and operating performance is a key consideration. This is as true in autonomous as well as in conventional mine truck-based hauling systems where the mine haul road network is a critical and vital component of the production process."

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the value of identifying and optimizing throughput constraints by utilizing a Constraint Model. This will be achieved by first understanding the overall concept of Operational Excellence, Continuous Improvement and Theory of Constraints as practiced within Vale Canada Limited. Next, the value of utilizing a Constraint Model is demonstrated by primarily identifying constraints. The applications in utilizing Constraint Models will be demonstrated, including the primary benefit of identifying constraints. The remainder of the paper will focus on how to properly setup a Constraint Model using discrete simulation (regardless of simulation software). Benefits of understanding the severity of constraints and movement of the bottleneck will be recognized. The paper will conclude with the summary of real applications within Vale Canada Limited.

The Citronen Zinc-Lead Project is one of the world?s largest undeveloped zinc-lead resources, containing more than 13 billion pounds of zinc and lead metal. The project is located in northern Greenland, a self-governed region of the Kingdom of Denmark (Figure 1). Citronen is the northern-most mine in the world, operating at a latitude of 83o 3? N. In excess of 67,000 meters of diamond drilling have been completed to delineate the resource. As of January 2012, the measured, indicated, and inferred reserves for the Citronen project totaled 70.8 million tonnes, consisting of 5.7% zinc + lead (3.5% zinc cut-off) (Ironbark, 2012). For the underground mine plan, room-and-pillar and long holestoping mining methods were selected. The beneficial application of structural fill was considered for increased recovery, efficient tailings disposal, and ground control. Three types of fill were compared - paste fill, cemented rock fill, and iced tailings. An environmental and economic feasibility study concluded that iced tailings was the preferred alternative provided it met the ground control requirements. The microstructure, properties, strengthening mechanism and work hardening mechanism of 600MPa grade high ductility hot-rolled sheet steel for automotive square tube were investigated by utilizing optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The results show that the microstructures of low C-low Mn-Nb and Ti microalloyed steel (Steel A) and high C-high Mn-Nb microalloyed steel (Steel B) are composed of ferrite and a small amount of pearlite. Compared with steel B, the size of ferrite and pearlite of steel A is finer, while the size of the second phase precipitates is larger. The mechanical properties of the two tested steels are similar before tube forming, except that the yield ratio of steel A is higher. Steel A has/exhibits significant work hardening after tube forming; the yield strength and tensile strength increase by 45 MPa and 26 MPa, respectively, while the elongation decrease by 6.0 percent. The yield strength and tensile strength of steel B increase by 22 MPa and 10 MPa, respectively, and the elongation decrease by 4.0 percent. The grain refinement strengthening is the dominant strengthening mechanism, accounting for 52.9 to 61.8 percent of the total yield strength; the solid solution strengthening is the second strengthening mechanism, accounting for 17.2 to 25.3 percent, while the precipitation strengthening and dislocation strengthening contribute little to the yield strength. The dislocation strengthening increase by 82 MPa of steel A after tube forming, which is higher than that of steel B. Therefore, steel B has a low work hardening rate that is more suitable for manufacturing automotive square tube for secondary tube forming.

Probably one of the most significant departures in tunneling practice is the introduction of Diesel locomotives far haulage (Diesel trucks have been used for some time). The fallacy of the belief that they do not generate carbon monoxide or toxic gases and can be used indiscriminately has been proved by the authors through observation for several years of atmospheric conditions surrounding the use of Diesel engines in tunnels. Diesel locomotives haves been introduced in tunnel haulage for reasons other than safety or health. Except to the extent that they replace trolleys, with their danger of causing electrocutions, modern Diesel locomotives do not increase safety Or remove any ordinary hazards to safety or health. In fact, they create such hazards, the extent of which is limited entirely by the carbon monoxide-content level set, method of ventilation, adequacy of the measures.

"In the context of today's continuously changing world, there are many factors which must be considered when attempting to assess the ability of Canada's primary copper producers to remain competitive in the face of increasing competition in world markets. In this paper, we have attempted to document those factors that will have the greatest impact on the future viability of Canada's copper industry, and to suggest possible strategies to fully utilize whatever inherent advantages Canada may have to enhance its competitive position. Technological factors related to the efficiency of precious and by-product metals recovery, energy type and utilization efficiency, production and sale of sulphur by-products, and control of 502 emissions are given high priority in this evaluation of Canada's future needs to remain competitive. Particular emphasis is placed on assessing the relative viability of hydrometallurgical versus pyrometallurgical processes for copper; to address uniquely Canadian conditions and problems. Due consideration is also given to the economic incentives required to allow Canada's copper producers to compete under anticipated world market conditions and to facilitate the continued development of Canada's copper resources. IntroductionWhen we try to assess the viability or competitiveness of any industry the bottom line is still usually, ""Can we produce a pound of product cheaper than the competition?"" Canada's copper industry is certainly no exception. However, as with most resource-based industries dependent upon exports, there are many factors which have a significant effect on the cost components which make up the total cost of producing and selling a pound of copper. It is desirable therefore to have as clear a picture as possible of the cost components, the major factors affecting them, and how they compare with the competition, particularly the third-world copper producers.In this paper we have attempted to provide a brief outlook for world copper markets and a brief overview of Canada's competitive position. We have also attempted to document those factors which will have the greatest impact on future production costs, and have suggested possible initiatives to utilize inherent Canadian advantages to enhance our competitive position. Domestic byproduct fluorine (in fluosilicic acid) availability at various price levels of aluminum fluoride were determined and a contingency availability curve developed. The supply of byproduct fluosilicic acid is restricted in amount to certain geographic regions, where plants processing phosphate rock are located, and the byproduct can be collected. The maximum possible U.S. annual supply, based on potential plant capacities, is 373,400 tons of fluosilicic acid containing 295,400 tons of fluorine. Based on inputs of 5, la, 25, 50, and 100 thousand tons per year, five levels of producing aluminum fluoride from fluosilicic acid (100 percent) were costed. Based on a 12-percent discounted cash flow rate, including the cost of salvaging the fluosilicic acid, the calculated selling price of aluminum fluoride ranged from $233 per ton to $448 per ton. At the higher price, 98 percent of the potential supply of byproduct fluosilicic acid could be used profitably; at the lower price only 46 percent could be used profitably.

The present paper presents. the concept of micro-models and illustrates the application of the same in the simulations metallurgical processes. Development of micromodels requires access to accurate thermodynamic, thermophysicaland kinetic information for the relevant systems with suitable models to extrapolate the data as functions of temperature and composition. Experimental measurements and modelling of the thermodynamic properties, sulphide capacities and viscosities of oxide melts carried out in the department are presented. The incorporation of these models in process models, with special reference to ladle refining of steel is illustrated. Typical example of micro-modelling of solid-gas reactions is also presented.

The influence of fuel additives on automobile exhaust emissions was studied using engines currently found in the U.S. vehicle population. The fuel additives used in the experiment were four multifunctional additives and one lead antiknock additive. Experimental work was done to determine both the direct effect of the additive per se on exhaust emissions and the influence of Long-term additive effects on emissions with mileage accumulation. Results showed no significant direct or intermediate effect on exhaust emissions for any additives tested. In subsequent experimental work concerned with the long-term or indirect effects of additives, the detergent-dispersant additives were found to have little influence on emissions when used in conjunction with high-quality oil and motor fuel. The lead (tetraethyl) antiknock additive increased exhaust hydrocarbons approximately 12 to 17 percent during a 4,000-mile accumulation period using a base fuel containing 2 ml of tetraethyl lead per gallon. An unleaded fuel was used during a similar accumulation period with no significant increase in exhaust hydrocarbons with mileage.

Measured detonation pressures of "prills and oil" (94/6 ammonium nitrate/fuel oil) and three of the new "slurry" blasting agents are presented and compared with computed, ideal detonation pressures and with detonation pressures expected from the measured detonation velocities. Results seem to show that the peak pressure in the detonation wave in these cases is the Chapman-Jouguet pressure and that no "spike" exists in these detonation waves. The absence of the Zeldovich-von Neumann "spike" is noteworthy in view of the very long reaction zone lengths of these mixtures. The measured detonation pressure of one of the slurry blasting agents (DBA-3") under steel confinement ( 172 kilobars) is shown to be considerably greater than the ideal detonation pressure of 75 per cent gelatin dynamite (p. = 135 kilobars) despite the fact that the detonation was still somewhat non-ideal in "DBA-3," its computed ideal detonation pressure being 180 kb. The popular 94/b AN /FO blasting agent exhibited a detonation pressure of only 13.5 kb in 5" paper tubes, but 37.5 kb in 5"• steel pipe compared with a computed ideal pressure of 40 kb.

DESPITE the loss, by enemy conquest, of a high percentage of our normal sources of supply for tin, the position of this important metal is easier today than that of rubber and a long list of other strategic materials, many of which are produced in this country. Actually, there is no shortage of tin for essential war purposes, owing to a strict control of its use, to increasing considerably the amount of secondary tin available, and to the foresight of the Government in authorizing the Reconstruction Finance Corp., as early as June, 1940, to acquire and produce certain critical and strategic materials of which tin was one of the most important. The construction of the Longhorn Smelter on the Gulf Coast in Texas is an important part of this program.

On June 1, 2004, the underground coal mine ventilation safety standards under the Code of Federal Regulations (Title 30, Part 75) became effective for the use of a conveyor belt entry as an intake air course to ventilate working sections. These standards, also known as the Belt Air Rule, contained a section which limited the air velocity in the conveyor belt entry to no greater than 500 feet per minute unless otherwise approved by the US Mine Safety and Health Administration in the fire suppression system section of a mine?s ventilation plan. The Belt Air Rule included a requirement dictating compatibility of air velocity with fire suppression systems. The final rule of limiting air velocity in the belt entry was challenged in the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. The court granted that petition and vacated the requirement on the air velocity cap, according to MSHA. The removal of the air velocity cap from the final rule, paired with the compatibility requirement, led to a need for research on high air velocity?s influence on fire suppression system performance in belt entries. Test data was needed that illustrated the relationship between fire suppression system performance and air velocity, especially with the increased use of wider belts in underground coal mines, so National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and MSHA collaborated to obtain the data. Spatial variance of rock properties is an important characteristic of rock which addresses the heterogeneity of mechanical and physical properties and their effect on underground mining. Assessing spatial variance can be useful for both locating potential difficult grounds and performing reliability analysis in the mining support system. This study shows a microscale numerical model for rock material based on continuum mechanics. To consider the spatial correlation factor of mechanical properties in realistic rock mass, this study introduces a spatial correlation concept into the traditional type III extreme value distribution model. Based on the improved microscale random model, we conducted a series of numerical uniaxial compressive tests and one longwall mine model to investigate the progressive failure of rock. The results show that spatial correlation factor can significantly affect the load-deformation curves and fracture patterns. The spatial variance model was applied to a longwall mine that included several cutting sequences to observe the influence of the spatial variance on roof behavior. The cohesion and friction random fields induced failure that propagated randomly through the immediate roof in different entries. The results showed that the spatial variance provides an accurate prediction of erratic roof falls in coal mines.

Conveyor system wear of belts and transfers attribute to a significant proportion of the maintenance costs and lost productive hours when handling hard abrasive ores at high unit rates typical of the iron ore industry. The recent growth phase has seen a rapid increase in mine and export capacity, with many new and upgraded plants operating at high throughput and utilisation. Subsequently, the industry has progressed to an optimisation phase, seeking to maximise production capacity and reduce maintenance costs with minimal capital spend. To support this, a programme of modifying designs was executed to improve conveyor transfer chute and belt life, which identified a need to challenge the industry practice for specification of designs to improve the functionality of the installed equipment. While acknowledging the importance of selecting the highest wear resistant materials for the intended application, this paper investigates design criteria related to decreasing conveyor transfer and belt wear. Of focus is a shift in the manner in which designs are specified, from specifications primarily governing geometrical constraints, to those meeting technical and functional requirements aimed at producing optimum geometry for a given set of material handling parameters. An assessment of transfer design criteria is presented.

Gross calorific value (GCV) of coals was estimated using artificial neural networks, linear and non-linear regression techniques. Proximate and ultimate analysis results were collected for 187 different coal samples. Different input data sets were compared, such as both proximate and ultimate analysis data, and only proximate analysis data and only ultimate analysis data. It was observed that the best results were obtained when both proximate analysis and ultimate analysis results were used for estimating the gross calorific value. When the performance of artificial neural networks and regression analysis techniques were compared, it was observed that both artificial neural networks and regression techniques were promisingly accurate in estimating gross calorific values. In general, most of the models estimated the gross calorific value within ±3% of the expected value.

ALTHOUGH nearly 10 pct of the total tonnage of coal produced annually within the United States is handled by bulk freighters on the Great Lakes, very little of the detail connected with it has been published other than occasional newspaper stories and publication of tonnage statistics. Of the total tonnage floated on the Lakes each year some 10,000,000 is stored and distributed from the port of Duluth Superior, at the western end of Lake Superior commonly known as the Head of the Lakes. This port has the largest single area concentration of coal docks in the world. Since this area contains the largest ore docks, the largest movable material handling bridge, the largest and highest grain elevator and the largest coal briquetting plant in the world, it is entirely fitting and proper that here also should be located the largest coal dock and what we believe to be the worlds largest clam shell. Of the sixteen coal docks operated by ten companies, five are owned and operated by the North Western-Hanna Fuel Co. which has two docks on the Superior, Wis. water-front and three docks in Duluth, Minn. It is with these five docks that we are primarily concerned. GENERAL HISTORY In the summer of 1871 a small sailing vessel entered the harbor of Duluth Superior with the first commercial coal cargo. All the coal brought up that first year did not amount to more than 3000 tons. During the year 1877 the first dock equipped for handling coal was built in Duluth. Coal receipts increased to 52,785 tons in 1879 the first year for which an official record was kept. Since then the volume of water-borne coal to the Head of the Lakes steadily increased to a maximum of 12,688,321 tons in the year 1923. This tonnage was nearly equalled in the year 1927 and the next highest tonnage recent year was in 1946 when 10,105,703 tons were unloaded. The average annual bring-up over a ten year period 1938 to 1947 was 8,605,231 tons. Approximately 30 pct of the coal unloaded at the Head of the Lakes is handled over the docks of the North Western-Hanna Fuel Co. Competition of other fuels coupled with expansion of coal fields in the mid-west have held coal receipts for Duluth-Superior at a relatively constant figure during the last eight years although the total tonnage of coal floated on the Great Lakes has more than doubled in the past 25 years. In June 2005 the Minerals Council of Australia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Australian Government which states an intention ?for mining companies and government to work together with Indigenous people to build sustainable, prosperous communities in which individuals can create and take up social, employment and business opportunities in mining regions?. Implementation of the MoU has begun with demonstration sites established across Australia. All sites are using a Regional Partnership Agreement (RPA) model as a framework for enabling local people to find local solutions to local issues in partnership with mining companies, governments and Indigenous communities. Mining and resources companies can provide important input into regional economic development and capacity building by working through local partnerships. Company benefits include gaining a social licence to operate, access to a reliable skilled workforce, better longterm relationships with Indigenous communities and sustainable regional communities. All levels of government, Australian, State and Local, are working collaboratively to address unemployment and other issues in remote Indigenous communities. The Australian Government has adopted RPAs as one mechanism for implementing its whole-of-government approach to Indigenous affairs. This leading edge work is unique to Australia and the model has applications and significant learning for other countries and industries.
