The effect of cracking by increasing the free space above the charge on the composition and yields of the volatile products from carbonization of Pittsburgh-bed coal and one industrially used blend from Eastern United States and one from Western United States was investigated with the BM-AGA carbonization apparatus. Increasing the free space above the charge from 1 inch to 3 inches, to 6 inches, and to 9 inches resulted in lower tar yields and increased gas and light oil yields. Anthracene and naphthalene yields were increased; quinoline and benzene insoluble fractions of both the tar and pitch increased considerably with increased free space, although the carbon content of the tars and pitches increased only slightly. Increased cracking, occasioned by the increase in free space, resulted in a decrease in the yields of tar acids, tar bases, neutral oils, olefins, aromatics, and paraffins and naphthenes. Gas composition was relatively constant; hydrogen and methane tended to increase and ethane decrease. Results of the investigation are being used to design a unit to upgrade the volatile products of carbonization by cracking the hot products as they leave the carbonization chamber.

"Specialized numerical modeling codes have been developed over the years to estimate ground stresses during the excavation of coal in underground mines. One of these tools, MULSIM, a displacement discontinuity boundary element code, was last developed by Zipf into a version called MULSIM/NL [USBM 1992a, 1992b]. The code was used frequently in years past, but closure of the Bureau of Mines in 1996 marked the beginning of a pause in its development. A similar tool with distinctly different treatment of overburden idealization, LaModel, was subsequently developed [Heasley 1997] and largely displaced MULSIM/NL in the literature. However, recent work modeling deep western longwall coal mines [Larson and Whyatt 2013] has demonstrated that MULSIM has distinct advantages for regions with relatively stiff and strong overburden. This work required that MULSIM be revived and updated into a version called MulsimNL/Large. Updates include larger array sizes, greater precision, greater number of materials, and the addition of a five-point, six-segment pillar load/displacement model that provides the user a more flexible coal-strength model allowing hardening and softening before a final residual strength. MulsimNL/Large has the ability to calibrate to large load transfer distances observed in some western U.S. coal mines that appear to be caused by strong, massive units in the overburden and/or floor of a coal mine. Also, it provides the ability to calibrate gob stiffness to simulate measurements or estimates of overpanel weight distribution between gob and abutment, while still maintaining load transfer distance with minor adjustments. MulsimNL/Large can easily implement material strengths calculated from various pillar strength models. The five-point model gives MulsimNL/Large the ability to easily simulate pillar behavior that is extracted from detailed pillar models, such as FLAC3D. MulsimNL/Large or similar approaches should be considered for evaluating mining layouts where stratigraphic conditions are known to cause overpanel weight to transfer to an extent significantly longer than the empirical method widely used to calculate load transfer distances in the U.S. [Peng and Chiang 1984; Mark 1987; USBM 1990]."

A review of this period shows some truly remarkable accomplishments in both system development and applications. In addition, work now under way promises results which will continue the rate of progress of the past. This paper will review the history and status of the field of computer control and point out the major breakthroughs which have occurred. It will analyze the present trends and extrapolate them to predict the early future developments in the field.

The processes involved in turning a set of seismograph records into a geological structure map may be divided into three classes; (1) picking reflections on the records, to be used for the computations; (2) determining the basis on which the computations should be made in order to arrive at correct results; (3) making the necessary computations and plotting sections and maps. The first is usually done by the crew chief, or at least checked by him. The computing system usually originates in the head office, occasional consultations with the party chief providing modifications as necessary to meet special conditions. The computations and plotting are done by the party computer, with possibly one or two assistants if the calculations require much time. Picking the Rejleclions Marking of the reflections on the records is perhaps the most important step and the one most likely to determine the reliability of the final results. Making the "picks" is important because most of the problems that come up in practical work are connected with the problem of what can be done with poor records. The lack of any definite criteria by which to judge what are good and usable reflections is at the bottom of the difficulty. Give the same set of records to several people to mark and they will probably come out with a variation in the number of reflections per record that are deemed usable. With good records the correct picks are obvious to all, but with poor records experience seems to be the only reliable guide as to what picks are reliable and what are merely born of imagination and desperation. Experience in marking records and seeing how the structures eventually check out is more important than training in physics or geology. Different types of equipment and shooting methods may produce records quite different in appearance, from the same territory, and the computer can do his best work with records of a type on which he has had considerable experience, and has learned the limitations and shortcomings as well as the virtues of the data with which he is working. Reflections may be picked for dips only, in which case the particular reflection picked is not recognizable with certainty on records from any other spread. "INTRODUCTION The use of scrap mica as an industrial raw material has grown rapidly during the past two decades. Demands by various industries for ground mica for use in the roofing, paint, rubber, plastics, and wallpaper trades as well as for less extensive uses in insulation, oil-well drilling, welding, pipeline enamel, decorative material, and for other purposes exceed present (1947) supplies.A small proportion of the raw material used comes from the Black Hills of South Dakota, where casual recovery has been practiced in the exploitation of pegnatite deposits for more valuable minerals. The annual production of scrap mica in the Black Hills for the years 1939 to 1946 is shown in figure 19. 4/Although small, this production of scrap mica materially augments the incomes of numerous operators.Volume production of mica would offer attractive opportunities for obtaining steady and more economical supplies of the rare minerals as byproducts. Appreciable supplies of beryl, lithia minerals, sheet mica, tantalite-columbite, and cassiterite could accrue. Furthermore, a stable scrap-mica production would complement the production of quality feldspar, for which the Black Hills pegmatites are noted, and would help balance the economy of pegmatite mineral production.Mechanical methods of separation are requisite to production of enough scrap mica to be generally profitable. Various phases of the characteristics end treatment of mica have been investigated by the Bureau of Mines. A bibliography of these reports is appended.In 1945 the Bureau of Mines conducted pilot-plant tests to recover scrap mica by selective screening of crushed pegmatite. More recently the problem has boon studied in the Pegmatite Research Laboratory to aid in developing technological methods by which scrap mica may be separated from crushed pegmatite."

An evaluation was made of one of several improved underground communication systems sponsored by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The system evaluated was installed in a typical metal/non-metal room and pillar mine and utilized UHF repeaters connected to a unique distributed antenna and passive reflector system which provided mine-wide communications. A microprocessor controlled data collection system was assembled and installed for the evaluation. Data consisting principally or times and durations of messages and identities of the originating transceivers was collected between February and August of 1982 (6 mos.). Analysis of the data shows that the principal benefits are reduction in time required for unscheduled maintenance and repair, enhancement of safety, and better coordination of production activities. A cost benefit analysis shows a net benefit over cost, although it is also concluded that the capacity of the system is greater than can be justified by current activity in the mine.

Mine fire emergency planning requires simulation of the interaction of the fire and ventilation system and the subsequent distribution of products of combustion (POC). Several computer models were developed by the Bureau of Mines to perform this simulation. The most recent and advanced program, MFIRE performs normal ventilation network planning calculations, and dynamic transient state simulation of ventilation networks under a variety of conditions. MFIRE simulates a mine's ventilation system and its response to altered ventilation parameters such as the development of new mine workings or changes in ventilation control structures, external influences such as varying outside temperatures, and internal influences such as fires. A major concern of mine fires is the heat- generated ventilation disturbances which can move POC through unexpected passageways. This Bureau paper describes recent in-mine experiments conducted at the Waldo Mine near Magdalena, NM to validate the temperature distribution and heat exchange with rock functions of MFIRE.

Wheal Jane, situated between Truro and the Carnmenellis granite, is under development by Consolidated Gold Fields, Ltd., as a tin producer. The main or B lode comprises a complex cassiterite-sulphide ore located in shear zones along the footwall of the lowest of a series of porphyry dykes (elvans) which strike ENE and dip 35° north. Minor mineralisation follows other elvan contacts and sets of later steeply dipping fractures. The localisation and overall geometry of the deposit is explained in terms of the complex structural geology of the Lower Palaeozoic metasediments and the shape and manner of emplacement of the invading Hercynian granite of Cornwall. Variations in the thickness and grade of the orebody, and in the nature of the mineralisation, are shown to be structurally controlled by undulations of the footwall contact of the B elvan. Carbon dioxide (CO2), a major component of the greenhouse gases, could be comprehensive utilized as a valuable resource to oxidize vanadium during the converter vanadium extraction process. The thermodynamic software, FactSage, was utilized to study the oxidation ability and theoretical cooling ability of using weak oxidant CO2 as coolant in vanadium-containing hot metal. Besides, experimental research on vanadium extraction in CO2 and O2 mixed blowing extracting process had been undertaken. The results indicated that the elements C, Si, V, Mn etc. could be oxidized by weak oxidant CO2, and the content of V2O3 in slag was approached to pure O2 blowing. Furthermore, CO2 had a remarkable cooling ability and the molten bath temperature kept on decreasing as CO2 blowing rate increases. This research has proved that CO2 and O2 mixed blowing in vanadium extraction process are effective.

A key issue facing mine managers in remote locations in Australia and overseas is that of managing a fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) workforce. Current Australian research (Sibbel, in prep) indicates that FIFO employees and their families do not differ from the general population in terms of their overall mental health and the well-being of their family relationships. However, they do face unique issues/pressures associated with the lifestyle, the impacts of which are dependent on the policies and practices of the company as well as individual coping and support mechanisms. Successful management of a FIFO site and its employees therefore requires specialist knowledge and skills beyond those of a solely residential operation. The well-being of the FIFO workforce depends on both site and individual employee characteristics, and has implications for productivity and turnover, as well as safety and health. In addition, although FIFO separates individuals and their families in time and space, the interaction between work and home must be acknowledged and taken into account. Drawing on findings from recent Australian and international FIFO research (eg Annear, Poot and Kingston, 2006; Beach, Brereton and Cliff, 2003; Brereton et al, 2006; Gallegos, 2006; Keown, 2005; Parkes, Carnell and Farmer, 2005; Sibbel, 2001, 2004, in prep; Shrimpton and Storey, 1996; Storey, 2001; Watts, 2004) this paper discusses key understandings of both the positive and negative impacts of FIFO employment on employees and their families, and provides practical management strategies as an aid to the development of best practice. Individual impacts including fatigue and loneliness, as well as family issues such as communication, continually changing roles and responsibilities and the impacts of regular parent absence are key areas which can be ameliorated by appropriate management understanding and action. A flexible framework approach is presented that is suitable for a diversity of operations, including principal and contractor workforces of different sized operations.

This paper discusses the prediction of subsidence over partial extraction systems in thick coal seams. A model based on empirical techniques using influence functions is developed to calculate the surface ground settlements above extraction panels. Independent of the influence function, two field parameters, the subsidence factor and the angle of draw (limit angle) are required to define the model. Both these parameters are best observed from critical or super critical subsidence areas. However in thick seams, extraction widths are typically sub critical and therefore it was necessary to refine an estimation process for sub critical conditions. Partial extraction systems in NZ are characterised by variability with respect to extraction thickness and depth. As extraction proceeds along a panel, conditions deteriorate once the critical span width is exceeded and therefore percentage extraction decreases. A further variable was introduced to the modelling which allows for varying extraction sequences. Two comparisons with field observations, one over a partial extraction panel, the other over abandoned workings, showed the method gave good agreement to measured subsidence values.

The model for methane removal from the workings directly behind an advancing longwall as presented in this paper may be used for U-ventilated cross or length-wise systems of longwall advance, starting from the boundaries of the extraction field. In mines with high methane concentrations, Uventilated longwall extraction from the boundary of the extraction field produces a methane risk. The risk is manifested by a higher methane concentration at the end of the longwall, upper gate and incline. The methane in increasing concentrations, which is emitted mainly from the workings with caved areas, appears towards the end of the longwall and in the upper gate. The graphical model of the longwall provided includes both the workspace of the longwall and the caved area. Based upon a model of the rock distribution in the cave, a ventilation model comprising two standard air splits and large number of crosswise air splits has been constructed. Simulations indicate that if the shearer is not present in the longwall, the air distribution in the caved area is symmetrical. The presence of the shearer, both at the bottom and the top of the longwall, causes an asymmetrical air distribution in the cave, that is the asymmetrical flows in the goaf and longwall workspace and in the inflows and outflow between those regions. This phenomenon causes an increase in methane concentration at the end of the wall and at the upper gate. The methane removal method proposed for workings with a caved area directly behind the advancing U-ventilated longwall, starting from the boundary of the field, consists of the removal of methane-air mixtures from the caved area with the boom pipes. These booms may be of several meters long and may be extended if necessary. The insertion of the boom pipes into the cave towards the end of the longwall and connecting them with the general methane removal system creates negative pressure causing a change in the depression field, which is the aerodynamic potential field in the goaf area around the ends of the boom pipes. This will promote the extraction of the methane-air mixture from voids and the goaf cracks, and the area from which methane is being extracted may extend to the side of the cave. This is a positive phenomenon, which could result in the methane flow from the goaf into the airflow in the longwall workspace decreasing or even stopping. A reduction in the methane flow into the longwall workspace with extractions booms will be advantageous for the production continuity. Based on the floor load model for the rocks in the cave and the methane-removal boom load model, the value of the force required to move the boom behind the advancing wall has been calculated. Strength calculations for the pipe were performed using a finite elements method. The analysis results, as well as the comparison of the pipe material effort to the strength parameters of steel, which can serve as piping material (for the assumed load conditions), lead to a belief that the proposed boom construction satisfies the strength requirements.

Beasley, the smelter superintendent, and his staff.INTR0DUCTI0NIt has been noted that the gases issuing from the top6 of the charges in the International Smelting Co.'s furnaces at Tooele, Utah, were very similar in composition to the gases from the top of the iron blast furnace, as they contained about 26 per cent of CO and 12 per cent of C02, the rest of the constituents being mainly nitrogen with a very little hydrogen and oxygen. It has been seen that where the column of coke was sufficiently high, the production of C0 gas to carry out the reduction of lead ores was accomplished in about the same manner as in a gas producer. In some cases, there was a little oxygen in the ""top gas"" -- usually not over a few tenths of a per cent, but at times amounting to several per cent. The presence of this gas was attributed to irregularities in operation that permitted air to come up through the tuybres to the surface without meeting any coke that was incandescent. Only a hundredth of a per cent or so of sulphurous oxides was present in the gases issuing from the top of the furnace."

Introduction The property of Rouyn Merger Gold Mines, Limited, is in Rouyn and Joannès townships, Western Quebec, seven miles east of the town of Rouyn. Traversing it is the east-west trending Cadillac-Bouzan fault. Diamond drilling in 1944 and 1945 along a shear zone south of the fault indicated an ore deposit lying at the contact between sedimentary and volcanic rocks and dipping approximately 60° to the northwest. In the summer of 1945 it was decided to sink a shaft to investigate the indicated ore zone. In the immediate vicinity of the deposit, bed-rock is overlain by clay beds, in some places as much as 70 feet thick. Consequently, possible shaft sites were limited to those locations where overburden would not be excessive. The most favourable site was about 125 feet to the south of the ore zone as projected vertically from bed-rock to the surface. Accordingly, it was decided to sink the shaft at this point, with an inclination of 60° N. W., paralleling the dip of the ore zone.

Researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed the Saturn light that significantly improves illumination for roof-bolting machine operators while reducing glare. The existing roof-bolter lighting was the baseline and was compared to the Saturn at 100, 75 and 50 percent intensities. Discomfort glare and disability glare were measured by the De Boer rating scale and the Mars Letter Contrast sensitivity test, respectively. Thirty study participants were tested. Discomfort glare was reduced at least three levels with the Saturn luminaire. Visibility levels were four to 6.5 times better with the Saturn than with the baseline. The Saturn design is freely available for commercialization.

Following the success of the West Ore Zone distress mass blast in 2001 at Brunswick Mine, a similar approach was taken to distress the North Regional Pillar (NRP) which contained over 3 million tonnes of high grade ore. The NRP is located on the 1000 m Level with very poor hanging-wall (H/W) rock mass qualities. After an extensive geotechnical review, the distress slot is located close to the foot-wall (F/W) of the NRP in order to have the competent ore as H/W. The longitudinal area to distress covers 115 m along the strike and 85 m high from 1000 1-sub to 850 Sill. Prior to the final mass blast, 3 voids were created to allow rock swelling: the North void, the South void and the trench just below the mass blast. After over one year of preparation, the mass blast of 202,000 tonnes was successfully initiated on February 7, 2003 with 1561 electronic detonators and 210,000 kg of emulsion explosives. The blast achieved its objective of distressing the NRP as indicated the mine-wide micro-seismic monitoring system. This paper describes different stages of the project from void preparation to the mass blast itself, as well as some detailed aspects such as muck-pile prediction for mucking sequence with the help of DMC_Blast simulation code and electronic detonators.

Four types of slope failures in waste dumps are recognized debris flow, foundation failure, edge slump, and blowout. The first three types, although at times causing considerable damage to property and interfering with mine operations, are not usually dangerous to personnel because of their slow rate of movement. The fourth type, the blowout, is the most dangerous because of its explosive mode of failure and lack of forewarning. The December 1969 failure at Verona dump is presented as an example of a blowout. Data from piezometer holes indicate that the blowout was due to perched leach solutions near the face of the dump. The level of water in this zone is very closely related to the rate of leach water application on the dump. A detailed analysis of core samples indicates that the impounded water was perched on a zonal accumulation of jarosite which is associated with a buried dump surface. Drain holes proved successful in controlling perched leach solutions in the critical zone near the face of the dump. Monitoring of the water level in the perched zone is considered essential in preventing blowouts. The use of drain and piezometer holes has allowed an increase in the rate of water application on the dump while preventing additional failure.
