In 1925 the Park Utah Consolidated Mines Co., after several years of experimental work, installed a system for signalling from cages which has been operating efficiently and with low upkeep costs for the post 19 years. The system was adopted for a large western metal mine but was later abandoned be arse of the constantly shifting shaft alinement. Recently the system has been studied and probably will be put into service at two other large mines. One of the principal reasons wry the system has not boon adopted more widely has been the lack of adequate details both as to the desirability of having such a system and as to its construction and operation. Previous signaling, systems contained undesirable features, such as charged bare wires extending the full length of the shaft. Under the direction of O. N. Friendly, then general superintendent of the Judge Mining & Smelting Co., the present system, entailing the use of a samll current at low voltage, was gradually developed. Many of the refinements in the system wore contributed by Leonard Wilson, consulting electrical engineer, Salt Lake City, Utah.

"The goal of the protocol for reclaiming in-pit tailings ponds to exceed federal and state regulations was to develop a series of steps that can be followed to design, operate, and reclaim a tailings disposal pond that will develop into grazing land with a wetland for open pit sand mines in warm dry climates. By incorporating a wetland into the reclamation design, the post mining land use gives back to both the wildlife as a source of water as well as providing for a diverse range of post mining land use including but not limited to livestock grazing and ranch land use. An example design was completed using this protocol to demonstrate how the protocol can result in in a well-designed, reclaimed tailings disposal pond. BACKGROUND In an industry plagued with decaying historic mine sites, the public’s perception of mining appears to be poor. While modern mines are closely monitored and generally managed by ethical professionals, history still influences how the public perceives the mining industry. From collapsing abandoned underground workings to historic tailings dam failures, the failure to account for the environment in the past seems to affect public perspective on mining today. In a 2013 “Opinion Former Survey,” a survey conducted through interviews with a diverse range of stakeholders in various gold companies, it was noted that the most serious challenges facing the mining industry were environmental concerns and the permitting challenges associated with them (Council). In another article, this time focusing on Australian citizens and their perspectives of the mining industry, it was found that the majority of those surveyed had a big concern over the environmental impacts of mining especially when it comes to water quality and quantity (Scan). The statistics portrayed in these articles illustrate that today’s mining engineers needs to make more of an effort to change the public’s perspective of mining by being more environmentally aware. These engineers should be continuously asking themselves what they could be doing better from an environmental perspective to ensure that history is not repeated and that natural resources are used as efficiently as possible."

Situation: Creighton mine, situated about twelve miles west of Sudbury, Ont., on the Algoma Eastern railway, is owned and operated by the International Nickel Company, incorporated in the United States under the laws of New Jersey. The ore is smelted at Copper Cliff, near Sudbury, and the matte is refined at Port Colborne, Ont., on lake Erie. Geology: The ore occurs in what is known locally as 'the basin' near Sudbury (Figure 1) the central part of which is composed of the Animikie series of sediments, consisting of sandstones, slates, tuffs and conglomerates. The basin is about 16 miles wide and 36 miles long. The Animikie sediments are surrounded by a sill of norite - a gabbro rock in which the pyroxenes are orthorombic. On the outer contact of this norite the sulphide deposits occur and the Creighton deposit, similar to others, lies on the southern edge of this basin. There are two orebodies at the Creighton, the upper one called the footwall orebôdy, and the lower one the hanging-wall orebody. The hanging-wall of both of these bodies is norite, and the footwall of the upper one is granite. The two are separated by an intrusion of greenstone which forms the footwall of the lower body. The ? maximum length of the deposit is 1000 feet and the maximum width is approximately 300 feet. It narrows at the ends and is somewhat lenticular in shape. The dip is about 45 o to the west, and the strike is north and south. The orè is a mixture of three minerals - pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and pentlandite. The pentlandite, which is distinguished by its cleavage from the other two, is apparent to the naked eye only in the lower orebody and is more finely disseminated in the upper one. The lower body contains a little higher percentage of nickel.

Plans have been drawn up to mechanize some key operations to improve the quality of cathodes and the working environment as well as economize the refinery operations. The economic analysis for determining various optimum operational parameters under conditions existing in India have also been outlined. The impact of capacity utilization and mechanization under different sets of conditions on operational costs have been highlighted.

G.A. Carmody and L.B. Anderson We wish to comment on the paper by G.W. Heunisch (MINING ENGINEERING, January 1987), which raised several important points regarding treatment of acidic waste waters. This paper confirms, in part, tests carried out by Allyn Corp. Allyn is the manufacturer of the proprietary product Alka-Ment, one of the materials that Heunisch tested. The first point is the extreme sensitivity of the sedimentation rate on the nature of the treatment material used. This apparently results from differences in nucleation of the metal hydroxides, and is consistently higher for Alka-Ment. This decreased sludge volume is also observed when Alka-Ment is combined with flocculants, such as organic polymers (see Table 1). Our second point is to emphasize that Heunisch's work shows how dependent the sludge volume is on pH. It is common practice to overtreat AMD by raising pH to 9 or 10. This practice, in addition to being wasteful of material, actually decreases the density of the resulting sludge, probably by creating charged particles that do not readily coalesce. When treating with Alka-Ment, we recommend that the treatment be monitored by testing both pH and dissolved iron. For both tests, it is important to allow adequate time to elapse between treatment and measurement, so that dissolution of alkali, aerobic oxidation of iron, and precipitation of the metal hydroxides are nearly complete. Our tests have indicated that from 30 minutes to one hour is commonly required. Only in this way can a minimum pH be attained, with adequate treatment, denser sludge, and lower treatment rates achieved. Thirdly, Heunisch correctly recognizes that ASTM titration of Alka-Ment does not reflect the true treatment value available in a unit of Alka-Ment. Our work at Allyn indicates this is a most important consideration when evaluating various materials for the treatment of acidic waste waters. While we were unaware of Mr. Heunisch's work, we welcome comparisons between Alka-Ment and any competitive products readily available for field use. Allyn has hundreds of hours of laboratory and field data we are ready to share with interested parties treating acidic waste water.

"INTRODUCTION In accordance with the outline of investigation described in a previous report 5 of the Bureau of Mines dealing with the use of acrolein for detecting leakage of methyl chloride from unit--type refrigerating systems, the work has been extended to include an investigation of its use in a multiple system, This report gives the results of analysis of samples of the gas from representative units of a multiple system charged with methyl chloride containing approximately 0.9 per cent acrolein by volume, The results furnish a basis for estimating the Warning that would be given in event of leakage. Froth structure and stability are known to play important roles in determining mineral flotation recovery and selectivity. However, measuring froth stability in a consistent manner remains a significant challenge, especially at an industrial scale. Following preliminary tests on a copper concentration plant, a quantitative dynamic stability measure is investigated in this study in order to extend the results over a wider range of conditions and on a different orebody. The technique is based on the Bikerman foam test and uses a non-overflowing froth column to quantify froth stability. Experiments were carried out using an automated version of the froth stability column under different operating conditions. Air flowrate was the key operating variable. Tests were reproduced on a single flotation cell of a Platinum Group Metals concentrator. The froth stability factor, , was measured for each operating condition, and compared with the air recovery in the cell, , which was measured using image analysis. The froth stability column results gave the same trends as image analysis. In particular the froth stability factor was found to be linearly related to the actual fraction of air overflowing the cell. The metallurgical results clearly indicated that changes in air flowrate result in variations in flotation performance that can be attributed to changes in froth stability. The results showed that high froth stability conditions occur at intermediate air flowrates, and result in improved flotation performance. It is found that the froth stability column is a simple, cost-effective and reliable method for quantifying froth stability, and for indicating changes in flotation performance.

Mining companies have traditionally organized their structure around a scheme easy to manage: Mining Department and Mill Department. In a challenging landscape for mining, with decreasing grades, increasing rock hardness and more expensive energy, this way to organize departments has resulted in internal disputes and often contradictory targets between both mine and mill. These compete for individual, separated budgets whose Key Performance Indexes often damage each other’s output. The results are increased total production costs and reduction of profits. Some companies have completed the first step in eliminating these inefficiencies by creating Fragmentation Engineers and Fragmentation Superintendents. With all the knowledge available on the overall fragmentation process and costs, in this document an overhaul of the traditional management structure is proposed. Is a step further Mine-to-mill and mine-to-leach programs. Since comminution is the most expensive step of the mineral exploitation, it should be taken as a whole, not divided into competing departments. Thus, mining departments should be re-grouped into: transportation, fragmentation and flotation.

A method of selective gold recovery from black sands has been elaborated which is based on the liquid phase low temperature chlorination of materials. A liquid agent mixture of sulphur monochloride S2C12 and sulphur dichloride SC12 is used. This method ensures the gold extraction either in the state of AuC13.SC14 complex salt solution or as metal. The kinetics and main physico-chemical parameters of the process (eg density, solid: liquid ratio, temperature) have been investigated. The materials investigated were quartz-insipid ride samples with low sulphur and high iron (up to 70 per cent Fe2O3) contents. Gold recovery is 96 - 99 per cent at temperatures not exceeding 100¦C. Most of the associated minerals remain in the cake. To obtain metallic gold, the resulting solution of the AuC13.SC14 salt after leaching is reduced by hydrazine with subsequent annealing. The elaborated method is remarkable for small energy expenditures owing to low process temperature and a high gold dissolution rate. The solution of sulphur chlorides and other reagents are used in closed cycle.

"Canada developed pioneering rare earth solvent extraction methods to recover the rare earths and thorium as by-products of uranium recovery operations in Elliot Lake, Ontario, and was a major supplier of these key elements from about 1960 until 1990. At one stage, Elliot Lake was supplying perhaps one third of the world’s yttrium as well as much of its thorium. This paper reviews the development of Canada’s early rare earth and thorium production facilities. INTRODUCTIONThe rare earths and thorium were first identified in the early 19th century but were little more than curiosities for the next century. However, in the mid-1960s the invention of rare earth-based phosphors for the cathode ray picture tube used in colour television sets launched a major demand for certain rare earths.The use of thorium as an alloying agent in aircraft and missiles grew rapidly in the late 1950s. In the same period, demand for uranium for both weapons and power production soared. Also in the late 1950s, the Elliot Lake uranium-thorium-rare earth deposits (also known as the Blind River deposits) were discovered. This conjugation of events led to uranium production in the Elliot Lake camp, quickly followed by the co-production of thorium and, later, the rare earths.Uranium production in the Elliot Lake camp continued from 1955 to 1996. Thorium was produced continuously from 1959 to 1969. Rare earths were produced, intermittently, from 1965 to 1990. Complete production records are not readily available but unquestionably Elliot Lake made a significant contribution to world thorium and the rare earth production. This paper, presented earlier in an abbreviated form (Goode, 2012), is intended to present as much of the information that is available."

In a previous paper1 in which one of the authors collaborated, it was postulated that All dissolved reagents which, in flotation pulps, either by action on the to-be-floated or on the not-to-be-floated particles affect their floatability, junction by reason of chemical reactions of well recognized types between the reagent and the particle affected. This generalization, apparently, like many pioneer structures, had for certain observers a flimsy appearance, and these, judging its stability rather by the number than by the character of its foundation posts, have attempted variously to overthrow it, either by the frontal attack of general denial, or by the flanking movement involved in assuming that those cases in which the facts were unknown or unproved were, therefore, discordant. But as time has passed and further evidence on the question has accumulated, it has become apparent that the results of verifiable experiments add stone by stone to the substructure of the hypothesis, and that the super-tructure has lost nothing in weathering. The present paper constitutes an examination of the opposing positions in the light of the more recent evidence developed. It will clarify the discussion if, at this point, we state more fully the implications of the disputed hypothesis. In the first place, it is explicitly limited to reagents that are dissolved in the water of the flotation pulp. Next, it refers only to such of these dissolved reagents as act on the solid particles in the pulp to affect their floatability. This includes the collectors, activators, and certain depressors and gangue-control reagrnts, but not the pure frothers, and not, necessarily, conditioners whose function seems to be merely that of pH control, although in certain cases it has been demonstrated that such control has the effect of regulating the primary reaction of the collector, depressor, or the like. Finally, there is no limitation as to the nature of the chemical reaction postulated.

The underground storage of LPG and other hydrocarbons is in current commercial use in Northern Hemisphere countries in Europe, Asia and the USA.Elgas Pty Ltd, a 50 per cent joint venture between AGL and BOC, embarked on a worldwide feasibility investigation in 1989 to establish the viability of constructing an underground LPG storage facility in Sydney, Australia, the first of its kind in the country. Elgas recognised that with the limited 19 000 tonnes of storage capacity at Port Botany and the limitations imposed by use of small coastal ships (up to 10 000 tonnes capacity), a larger storage facility was required to utilise higher capacity ships from more remote sources such as the North West shelf and overseas. This would achieve security of supply in high demand periods and economies of scale. The underground option also provides improvements to safety and environmental standards.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has conducted studies to evaluate dust control technologies on deep cut continuous mining sections. These surveys have been conducted in different mines using various mining methods, face ventilation systems and dust control systems. The surveys typically consist of respirable dust sampling combined with a time study of mining activities. Measurements of dust control and operational parameters are also made. Critical elements identified for controlling respirable dust in deep cut mining systems include controlling intake dust, dust collector capacity, face ventilation quantities and velocities, positioning of workers, work practices and selection of equipment. This paper discusses how the dust surveys are conducted in deep cut mining sections and how these surveys are used to identify specific dust generating sources.

GEOLOGY One of the largest copper resources in North America occurs in the Bingham mining district, located 40 km (25 miles) southwest of Salt Lake City, UT. Anaconda's present contribution to the development of this resource is the Carr Fork mine. (Fig. 1, Bingham district plan map.) The Carr Fork story began about 300 million years ago when a thick sequence of sedimentary quartzite and limestone was deposited in the Oquirrh Basin. Subsequent earth stresses formed a series of west-northwest-trending overturned anticlines and synclines that were later offset by northwest-striking thrust faults and northeast-trending normal faults. (Fig. 2, Bingham district cross section.) About 38 million years ago the Bingham stock was intruded into some of the folds, resulting in the formation of porphyry ore in the intrusive, and fissure, replacement, and skarn ore deposits in the sediments. The Carr Fork skarns were formed preferentially in two limestone units, called the Yampa and Highland Boy, which average about 46 m (150 ft) in thickness, separated by about 76 m (250 ft) of quartzite. Copper mineralization consists almost entirely of chalcopyrite associated with pyrite and molybdenite in a gangue of garnet, diopside, magnetite, quartz, and carbonate. Molybdenum, gold, and silver are economic byproducts. (Figs. 3 and 4, indicated ore in plan and section.) EXPLORATION HISTORY The West Mountain mining district, of which Carr Fork is a part, was organized in 1863, after leaf-silver ore was discovered in the Carr Fork of Bingham Canyon. However, it was not until 1873, when the Bingham and Camp Floyd railroad to the town of Bingham was completed, that the mining camp flourished. Many small mining companies in the district were reduced, often through consolidation. By 1937 only the National Tunnel and Mines Co. was active in the Carr Fork area. In 1948 it declared bankruptcy, and was later purchased by The Anaconda Co. Anaconda conducted geologic investigations in the Bingham district until 1968, when a concerted diamond drilling program was initiated to fully evaluate the geologic potential of the Carr Fork area. The exploration program commenced with one diamond drill, but was enlarged to three drills following discovery of the first major ore intercept. Near completion of the exploration effort, large oil well rotary drills were used to drill to depths of 762 to 914 m (2500 to 3000 ft), after which the holes were completed by standard diamond drilling techniques. All holes were collared vertically, but considerable deviation occurred because of structure and rock conditions. Reference to the original use of the terms Laurentian and Huronian (and its extension), shows that the former was applied to granitized sedimentary and metamorphic pre-Cambrian rocks, and the gneissoid igneous rocks associated therewith, and the latter to non-fossiliferous rocks supposed to be later. But it appears from the work of Collins, Quirke and others that there is more or less of an overlap, and that of the original Laurentian the Grenville limestone, and some of the granites, may be later than the lowest part of the original Huronian. Before we can decide whether to abandon one or the other of the two terms, or how to delimit them, it is important to know the extent of this overlap. The Pb :U ratio, though not to be depended upon too minutely, does give a real idea of the age of a mineral as it increases with the decay of uranium, and so is greater the longer the time since the uranium was separated: and there are reasonable prospects of help there from in getting a knowledge of the relative age of different granites to assist in solving the problem, as facts already collected show. 1. The Sumitomo Metal Mining Company Ltd. (SMM) started to produce electrolytic nickel at the Niihama Nickel Refinery in 1939. In 1992, the conventional matte electrorefining process was converted to the matte chlorine leach electrowinning (MCLE) process, which is currently in practice. SMM has mainly used two kinds of nickel matte as the raw material for the MCLE process. Treatment of new raw materials, which have different impurity contents from the original nickel matte, has become mandatory because of changes in the market. Therefore, the MCLE process has been required to increase its flexibility to treat the different impurity contents in the new raw materials. An increase in the capacity for iron removal is included in such requirements. A new iron removal circuit in the MCLE process, based on a process development study, was recently installed. The iron removal circuit is in operation, and efforts are currently underway to optimize the performance of the circuit by changing the present operating parameters. In addition to the removal of the iron, the application is also expected to improve the nickel recovery. The outline of the new circuit and the current iron balance in the MCLE process are described in this paper, together with the effect of the circuit on iron treatment capacity.

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation requested U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) assistance in developing design data for moving lead-zinc-gold tailings from their current location without disrupting the existing chemically stable conditions. This report presents results of USBM work in determining (1) the minimum required time to air dry the tailings to approximately 20 pet moisture under various drying conditions both in the laboratory and in the field, (2) the degree of oxidation or reduction that occurs during drying, (3) the effect of lime or cement addition before drying, and (4) the likely equilibrium conditions of the dried tailings after deposition at the new location. The limited number of tests performed by the USBM in the available time frame established trends in oxidation levels but did not provide absolute statistical validity of data values. All data from drying and oxidation testing are included in appendices to this report.

THIS paper discusses what mining reports should contain when presented to the California State Corporation Department, to accompany applications for the sale of stock to the general public, but the principles involved apply to mine financing everywhere. Such reports should 'be as clear and concise as possible, endeavoring to tell the truth in as few words as necessary. Should the engineer be aware that his report is to be used in connection with the sale of stock to the general public, he should consider the public as his client as well as the person who actually employs him. It is always required that the engineer be favorably known and of recognized standing. The following points should be given careful attention : 1. A legal description and location of the property. 2. Transportation conditions, and how they may be expected to affect the operating costs. 3. A brief history of the property, its production record as to tonnage, grade, and character of the ore should be given. Should the property have suspended operations for any reason, this should be given. Any details of former operating costs should be given, especially as to how any improvement could be made, due to better methods which might be employed.' 4. The main geological features and whether they are such as to lead the engineer to believe that the mine may possibly 'be exhausted or the ore of such grade as to be no longer profitable. If he considers them favorable, he should give his reasons for the belief that further development work may produce profitable results. A map showing these features should be submitted, and it is not necessary that such map be highly colored or contain any more than the essential matters. 5. "The Carboniferous coal measures, mined across Europe including the major European underground coal mining countries of Poland, UK, Germany, and Czech Republic, suffer from increasing extraction depth. This results in major geomechanics problems associated with ground control and support design.With production being concentrated into ever fewer high performance longwalls, located at greater and greater depth, pressure to ensure the roadways’ functionality (required dimensions) continues to increase. Mining in deeper and more highly stressed mining environments creates several problems. The high stress and deterioration in geological and mining conditions in many cases causes problems with gateroads maintenance (due to excess convergence). That leads to costly production gaps, longwall slowing, transport problems, an increase in the methane hazard and in the general health and safety of the workforce, and deterioration in climatic conditions with major economic risk associated with interruption of the revenue stream. Time—and thus production—delays due to maintenance often result from insufficient geological and geotechnical data acquisition and misinterpretation combined with inadequate support for the type of rock mass.longwall face on the gateroad stability (described by the gateroad convergence, support load, and shape and height of the fractured zone around the longwall gateroad) are presented. The investigations were carried out in the longwall panel with roof caving located at the great depth, in conditions of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin in Poland.The measurement results showed that the gateroad fractures in roof strata began to occur at the distance of about 1000 m ahead of the face. Additionally, the load on support and gateroad convergence increased as the longwall face got closer.It is very important for coal mining research institutes and mine operators to investigate and develop practical solutions and apply innovative support technologies at a great depth (particularly for reinforcement and stabilization of roadways and other openings).Underground measurements of stability conditions around the gateroad is of great importance to mining practice, especially in planning and designing supports for longwall gateroads.The influence of the front abutment pressure results in an increase of support load, gateroad convergence, and shape of fractured rock zone."
