An idealized model has been developed for the purpose of studying the characteristic behavior of a permeable medium which contains regions which contribute significantly to the pore volume of the system but contribute negligibly to the flow capacity; e.g., a naturally fractured or vugular reservoir. Unsteady-state flow in this model reservoir has been investigated analytically. The pressure build-up performance has been examined in some detail; and, a technique for analyzing the build-up data to evaluate the desired parameters has been suggested. The use of this approach in the interpretation of field data has been discussed. As a result of this study, the following general conclusions can be drawn: 1. Two parameters are sufficient to characterize the deviation of the behavior of a medium with "double porositym from that of a homogeneously porous medium. 2. These parameters can be evaluated by the proper analysis of pressure build-up data obtained from adequately designed tests. 3. Since the build-up curve associated with this type of porous system is similar to that obtained from a stratified reservoir, an unambiguous interpretation is not possible without additional information. 4. Differencing methods which utilize pressure data from the final stages of a build-up test should be used with extreme caution. INTRODUCTION In order to plan a sound exploitation program or a successful secondary-recovery project, sufficient reliable information concerning the nature of the reservoir-fluid system must be available. Since it is evident that an adequate description of the reservoir rock is necessary if this condition is to be fulfilled, the present investigation was undertaken for the purpose of improving the fluid-flow characterization, based on normally available data, of a particular porous medium. DISCUSSION OF THE PROBLEM For many years it was widely assumed that, for the purpose of making engineering studies, two param- eters were sufficient to describe the single-phase flow properties of a producing formation, i.e., the absolute permeability and the effective porosity. It later became evident that the concept of directional permeability was of more than academic interest; consequently, the degree of permeability anisotropy and the orientation of the principal axes of permeability were accepted as basic parameters governing reservoir performance. 1,2 More recently, 3-6 it was recognized that at least one additional parameter was required to depict the behavior of a porous system containing regions which contributed significantly to the pore volume but contributed negligibly to the flow capacity. Microscopically, these regions could be "dead-end" or "storage" pores or, macroscopi-cally, they could be discrete volumes of low-permeability matrix rock combined with natural fissures in a reservoir. It is obvious that some provision for the inclusion of all the indicated parameters, as well as their spatial variations, must be made if a truly useful, conceptual model of a reservoir is to be developed. A dichotomy of the internal voids of reservoir rocks has been suggested.7,8 These two classes of porosity can be described as follows: a. Primary porosity is intergranular and controlled by deposition and lithification. It is highly interconnected and usually can be correlated with permeability since it is largely dependent on the geometry, size distribution and spatial distribution of the grains. The void systems of sands, sandstones and oolitic limestones are typical of this type. b. Secondary porosity is foramenular and is controlled by fracturing, jointing and/or solution in circulating water although it may be modified by infilling as a result of precipitation. It is not highly interconnected and usually cannot be correlated with permeability. Solution channels or vugular voids developed during weathering or burial in sedimentary basins are indigenous to carbonate rocks such as limestones or dolomites. Joints or fissures which occur in massive, extensive formations composed of shale, siltstone, schist, limestone or dolomite are generally vertical, and they are ascribed to tensional failure during mechanical deformation (the permeability associated with this type of void system is often anisotropic). "Pneumatic flotation cells of the KFM series are intended for the concentration of various ores and technogenic materials. The key operating principle of the flotation cells of the KFM series is the preparation of pulp for flotation in blowers, offering the advantage of an accelerated flotation process. This report summarizes the results of the implementation and operation of the KFM cells at Russian and foreign projects in 2015-2017. Their implementation and operation experience confirms the high efficiency of the KFM cells, especially in the head of lead and zinc, copper and zinc, copper flotation processes:head KFM-600 flotation cell recovers from lead-zinc ore (Rudmetal AD modular concentrator) up to 52% of lead in a single stage (without cleaner flotation) in a salable lead head concentrate (grade of up to 76% lead, 2.3% zinc). The flotation cell proved to be much more efficient than originally expected in the process description in the design phase,flotation of the copper-zinc ore from Novo-Shemur deposit (PJSC Svyatogor concentrator) in two KFM- 1400M cells recovers up to 65% of copper and 70% of zinc in a high-grade bulk copper-zinc concentrate containing 12-13% of copper and 25-28% of zinc. The installation of the two cells with a combined capacity of 26 m3 allowed to decommission 4 chambers of FPM-16 pneumomechanical flotation cells with a combined capacity of 64 m3 with a simultaneous increase in the overall ore concentration performancea single KFM-1400M cell (13 m3) recovers from the copper ore from Volkov deposit (PJSC Svyatogor concentrator) 53% of copper into a high-grade copper head concentrate (33.0% of copper). For comparison, the pneumomechanical cell FPM-16 (capacity 16 m3) has almost half as low copper recovery (29.6%) into the head concentrate at a lower grade (30.5% copper)."

"The mineral processing research community has devoted enormous efforts to the modelling of mineral separators over the last 50 years. While many efforts have been made to use only fundamental physics as a basis for the models, fluid flow patterns in separators are not simple while the motion of particle swarms through fluids is extremely complex.One of the simplest separators is the sluice, in which separation takes place in a flowing film a few millimetres thick. The particles are suspended by turbulent eddies and motion relative to the fluid takes place in so-called hindered settling mode.In an effort to test the extent to which fundamental fluid mechanics can provide a prediction of particle separation, a study on a simple parallel-sided sluice has been carried out using glass beads at various particle concentrations and flow rates.The actual particle separation taking place was compared to predictions made by first describing the fluid flow by a modified ‘law of the wall’ model.Particle concentration distributions were described using Hunt’s sediment transport model, assuming the particle eddy diffusion coefficient to be the same as that for the water. Settling velocities were calculated using either the Richardson and Zaki or Brauer and Thiele models. The latter takes into account particle size and density distributions and solids volumetric concentration.The resulting predictions of particle separation are remarkably good, even though the model does not model the local settling velocity in the slurry."

"As the amount of ferrous scrap increases every year, it becomes more and more urgent to deal with this iron-bearing resource properly. This paper puts forward a method on resource-oriented utilization of ferrous scrap (cold-bonded pelletizing), and these cold-bonded pellets can be used as coolant in a converter. The influence on the pellets qualities by using different kinds of chloride as rust agents is studied, and results show that the strength of cold-bonded pellets increases significantly by using a combination of the three kinds of chloride -NaCl,MgClz,FeCh, their best dosages are 1.2%, 0.2%, 0.1% respectively. Other iron-bearing materials also have an effect upon the pellets strength, by adding 5% iron powder and maintaining for 48h, the compressive strength of the clumps surpass 2500N/A, dropping strength surpass 4 times/ A, and 10% iron slag or 20% steel slag can replace 5% iron powder while obtaining the comparative quality. The influence of different ratios of three ferrous scrap (converter mud, iron scale and dust) is further studied, and results show that when the ratio is 30% : 30% : 40%, the pellet strength reaches the maximum. After maintaining for 24~48h, the clumps can meet the mechanical as well as the physical-chemical requirements as BOF steelmaking refrigerant.IntroductionGreat amounts of converter mud, dust and iron scale are produced in steel production process. These materials are of great values, and their accumulation not only leads to environmental pollution, but also wastes the precious resources, which restricts the sustainable development of the steel industry [1,2] The main approach at present to dealing with the ferrous scrap is to add them into sintering. But in this way, the utilization factor of sintering and the quality of sinter decline while the energy consumption increases [3].Therefore, more advanced and efficient technology is needed to make the best of these iron resources. Cold consolidation of ferrous scrap is a simple process that has many advantages such as less investment, quicker effect, lower energy and lower cost [4-5] But the conventional maintaining period is too long, usually up to four-six weeks, and the pellet strength is low. Therefore, the key points of the cold-bonded pelletizing are to develop a new adhesive [4,5] to shorten the natural maintenance cycle and to improve the strength of the pellets. A method on resource-oriented utilization of ferrous scrap (cold-bonded pelletizing) is brought forward, and these cold-bonded pellets can be used as coolant in converter. After maintaining for 48h, these cold-bonded pellets can satisfy the mechanical requirements to replace the converter coolant [6]."

This study examines the operations of the Cowper stoves attached to an iron blast furnace from a Second Law perspective. The exergetic efficiency of a 3-stove system operating at cyclic steady state is determined using a model accounting for the thermal, mechanical, and chemical flow exergies of the top gas and blast air, as well as the thermal exergy stored and released in the stoves. The analysis covers the heating and mixing of blast gas in one on-blast stove, and the combustion of top gas and its use to heat two on-gas stoves. The effect of different cycle times, and blast furnace operating conditions on the exergetic efficiency of the cycle is examined, and the optimal cycle time for different blast temperatures found. In addition, a study of the combustion parameters quantifies the advantages of using enriched oxygen in the combustors.

Greensand, greensand marl, and green earth are names given to sediments rich in the bluish green to greenish black mineral known as glauconite. The word glauconite is derived from the Greek word glaukos, meaning bluish green. The term "greensand" as a rock name for a glauconite-bearing sediment is more appropriate than "greensand marl," a term that has been doggedly perpetuated in the literature. Because of its potash and phosphate content, greensand was mined and marketed as a natural fertilizer and soil conditioner for more than 100 years. The advent of manufactured fertilizers with adjustable nutrient ratios led to a decline in the use of greensand in agriculture. The material has since been recognized as useful in water treatment. Unfortunately, despite large reserves and world- wide distribution, glauconite has not been utilized to any significant commercial extent because no major application has been found for a substance with its chemical composition and properties. This is probably due mostly to a paucity of research on its potential commercial uses. Extraction of potash received considerable attention during and just after World War I. Because of relatively high extraction costs and a generally low potash content (viz., less than 8%), glauconite lost its appeal as a source of this commodity. Historical Background Greensand was used as a fertilizer in New Jersey in the latter part of the 1700s. During the early 1800s its use became more common; applications of as much as 22.5 kg/m2 were sometimes made, although recommendations for agricultural use suggested 4.5 to 11 kg/m2 (Tedrow, 1957). Many crops, especially the forage type, were said to improve with greensand application; however, because of its slow release of potash, large quantities were required. Certain greensands that contain sulfur and sulfide minerals are harmful to plant growth, and these were classified as poison, burning, or black marls. The availability of higher grade potash salts from other mineral sources and the manufacture of prepared fertilizers displaced the agricultural use of greensand during the latter 1800s. During the mid-1800s the greensand industry, centered in a small section of the eastern United States, grossed more than $500,000/y. Toward the end of the century, however, annual production had dwindled to less than $100,000 in value. By 19 10 there were only six or eight greensand producers grossing less than $5,000/y each (Tyler, 1934). There was a brief revival of the US industry during World War I because of the curtailment of foreign potash, especially from Germany. During the latter 1940s and early 1950s greensand was again recommended as a food nutrient for plants and farm crops. Agronomic studies discussed its potential as a soil additive that gradually releases potash and many trace element nutrients essential for plant growth (Tedrow, 1957). Greensand was sold with the idea that it would condition soil and absorb and hold water while its base exchange properties would release trace elements. For a short time glauconite was used in certain parts of New Jersey as a binding additive in the brick industry, and in the 1800s it was used for making green glass (Cook, 1868). In the early 1900s the base exchange properties of glauconite were recognized for water treatment and the mineral gained acceptance as a water softener. Mansfield (1922) does not mention base exchange even though this phenomenon was known in 1916 or earlier. From 1916 through 1922 several patents for the use of glauconite as a water softening agent were granted. A method was also patented for treating greensand to improve it for water softening and ready regeneration with common sodium chloride brine (Borrowman, 1920, Spencer, 1924, Kriegsheim and Vaughan, 1930). Treated glauconite, on contact with water containing magnesia or lime, takes up magnesium or calcium ions and releases sodium ions. This exchange is limited to the outer surface of glauconite grains, and when all the surfaces have absorbed their capacity, the grains must be regenerated. Regeneration, simply stated, consists of treating or backwashing the glauconite with a sodium chloride solution, which replaces the hard water elements with sodium, thus reviving the glauconite. The process has become more sophisticated due to competition among companies in the water softening business. Greensand products for water softening generally consisted of several different grades distinguished by the particular treatment the glauconite was given during processing. The standard greensand water softener was produced from natural glauconite that was only washed and classified. Its characteristics for water softening are given in [Table 1].

Characterization of solids containing cyanides is carried out according to recommendations and standard guidelines. Most of these procedures are based on the analysis of leachates collected either on site or after leaching in the laboratory of samples. Unfortunately, these sole results are often insufficient to identify the source of the pollution. To provide 'a more complete characterization of polluted solids, optical and electron microscopy, XRD, Mossbauer spectroscopy, and transmission infrared spectroscopy were combined to analyze leachates and raw or ground samples. This combination of techniques allows the determination of the kind of cyanoferrate complexes are present in the solid state, different from insoluble Prussian Blue, since they do not have the same extraction' behavior. The use of all these techniques to characterize solid samples combined ,to the usual analysis of solutions gives a better understanding of ' the cyanide behavior.

"Wire and Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) has the potential to enable a very significant reduction in buy-to-fly ratio compared to conventional manufacturing through the ability to build near-net shape components. Components manufactured from AA 2319 by WAAM can exhibit significant levels of porosity. There is also a variation in the physical appearance of the surface deposit sometimes found on such components. This deposit is similar to those observed on aluminium joined by MIG and TIG welding processes. It has been suggested that both the bulk porosity and the surface deposit are caused by hydrocarbon-based lubricant on the feedstock wire. An established correlation between surface deposit and porosity would offer valuable insight into WAAM products and enable early interventions in quality control or process monitoring based on visual examination. The relationship between the nature of the surface deposit and porosity has been studied for AA 2319 WAAM components manufactured using different wire batches. Evidence is presented to support the assertion that (i) there does not appear to be a relationship between surface deposit coverage and porosity, (ii) batch-to-batch variability in feedstock wire affects porosity. This study has led to a better understanding of the cause of porosity in WAAM components.INTRODUCTION There is a high cost associated with conventional, subtractive manufacturing because of the high ‘buy-to-fly’ ratio, a measure of the initial material bought compared to the material found in the finished part (Allen, 2006; Yilmaz & Ulga, 2016). A typical aerospace product may have up to 90% of the purchased billet of forging machined away which is cost inefficient and high in material waste. Wire and Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) has the potential to reduce costs and lead time. Robotically controlled weld torches rapidly deposit feedstock wire in layers to build large near-net shapes with mechanical properties similar to those of conventional manufactured parts (Sequeira Almedia & Williams, 2010; Martina et al., 2012; Ding et al., 2015; Williams et al., 2015). A high level of porosity variation has been observed in aluminium WAAM parts (Cong, Ding & Williams, 2014; Gu et al, 2016) which can result in a range of material properties (Rudy & Rupert, 1970). This leads to difficulties in regards to standardisation and qualification of process and parts. In order for WAAM to be used commercially, porosity will need to be understood, monitored and reduced to a reproducible acceptable level or eliminated."

A major contribution to the art of blasting was made at the Cleveland- Cliffs Iron Company?s Hawkins Mine in Cashwauk, Minnesota during April of 1956. It was here that the first experiments with fertilizer grade ammonium nitrate were conducted-experiments which led to the development of the ammonium nitrate and fuel oil method of blasting which has been eagerly adopted by open pit and quarry operators throughout the United States. While this new blasting agent was a more or less natural outgrowth of the Akremite Process devised by Maumee Colleries of Terre Haute, Indiana; no one, to our knowledge, had used this particular combination of ingredients prior to this time. Certainly this was a "break-through" as far as the Lake Superior District was concerned. Akremite consists of a mechanical mixture of grained ammonium nitrate and a solid carbonaceous material packed in a plastic bag. At the time of its introduction to the Mesaba Range, Akremite sold for 10.5 cents a pound as compared to the 18 cent powder previously used in both wet and dry large hole blasting. The discovery of this agent was indeed a remarkable achievement, one that afforded a substantial reduction in blasting costs. However, Akremite proved to be only an intermediate step in the evolution of our present low cost explosives. Cleveland-Cliffs utilized prilled ammonium nitrate and fuel oil and then eliminated the mixing and packaging plant entirely by combining the two raw materials in the field at the drill hole collar or in the hole itself. Thus we have approached the ultimate in simplicity, for the blaster and his helper now manufacture their own explosives not only as they are needed but where they are needed, and at a cost of under 4 cents a pound. This two-man crew may charge and explode as much as 8 tons of ammonium nitrate in an eight-hour shift and in so doing break some 65,000 tons of ore.

DURING the roasting of zinc sulfide concentrates and by-product recovery from flue dusts, the zinc sul-fate phase may occur in various stages of the processes. In addition to zinc sulfide, other sulfide phases are usually present such as CdS, PbS, CuzS, and FeS. Consequently, the effect of these sulfides on the thermal decomposition of ZnS04 was investigated. Merck high-purity, anhydrous zinc sulfate was used as the starting material. The sulfate was heated under an argon atmosphere, at a rate of 10°C per min. With the first slight indication of decomposition as determined by gas analysis, the sample was removed from the furnace and allowed to cool. X-ray patterns showed no other phase present. It is estimated that less than 0.05 pct of the ZnS04 decomposed. The metal sulfides were also heated under an argon atmosphere to drive off any adsorbed water. The materials were then sized (-200 to +270 mesh), mixed in predetermined mole ratios, and pressed into pellets. The experimental measurement of the reaction rate consisted of purifying the argon carrier gas, continuous flushing of the heated reacting mixture with argon, and collection and analysis of the SOn product gas. Industrially proven and applied nitrogen species catalyzed (i.e. NSC) acidic pressure leaching has been utilized to treat a number of ores, concentrates and recycled materials. This versatile technology offers many advantages including low temperatures, low pressures, low capital costs, low operating costs, faster throughput and less costly materials of construction than conventional pressure oxidation. This paper will elucidate the application of this technology for production of gold, silver, palladium, rhodium, zinc, germanium, gallium, cobalt, copper and nickel. Recycled material applications will also be elucidated. In addition, details of an application for treatment of a refractory chalcopyrite copper and gold bearing ore will be presented and pertinent economics discussed.

"A methodology is proposed for milling flowsheet design using flotation rate, selectivity and residence time distribution data. The flotation rate data and the difference in flotation rates between the main minerals to be separated are determined from laboratory batch tests. The residence time distribution (RTD) data is calculated using the tanks-in-series model assuming each flotation cell is a perfect reactor. The rate, selectivity and RTD data can be used to calculate the optimum flotation cell number in a bank for rougher/scavenger in a commercial plant.This methodology is demonstrated in a case study of a nickel sulfide ore. It is shown that miniplant rougher/scavenger data can be closely predicted from a batch test using the proposed methodology.INTRODUCTIONIt has been the trend in the past several decades that large flotation cells are increasingly used. This is largely driven by the economics as ore grades are getting lower and the rate of ore processing must be increased in order to keep mining operations economically viable. The development and evaluation of 250 to 500 m3 WEMCO SmartCell and Outokumpu TankCell flotation machines are well in progress. There are many advantages in using large cells: fewer cells, less floor space, lower power cost (although this is now being questioned for fine particle flotation), simpler circuit, simpler control, and lower auxiliary equipment cost (Arbiter, 1999). As flotation cells are getting larger, the importance of cell hydrodynamics, namely, air/slurry dispersion, power intensity, froth transfer, residence time distribution (RTD) and short-circuiting are being fully recognized (Jonaitis, 1999; Weber, et al., 1999; Gomez and Finch, 2002). It is not the intention of this paper to discuss flotation cell scale-up. The intention is to answer what is the optimum number and size of cells in a flotation bank for a given throughput. Figure 1 illustrates this problem facing design engineers. The same mean residence time required for a given throughput can be achieved in a single large cell, or many smaller cells in a row. A few cells of large size may be more cost-effective but they may not be as effective as more cells of smaller size in achieving the optimum metallurgy."

Rare earth elements (REEs) contained in coal and associated mineral matter exist in several forms including micro-dispersed minerals, ion adsorption onto clay surfaces, and chemically bound. Tests found that REEs can be effectively recovered from certain components of three coal sources by leaching under mild conditions followed by solvent extraction. A range of pH values were evaluated at solution temperatures of 25 and 75 °C. When using 1.2 M of sulfuric acid, nearly 85% recovery of the REEs was extracted from the middlings material collected from an operating plant. Acid leaching of a second middling source from another plant resulted in 60% of the total REEs being recovered under the same leaching conditions. Solvent extraction treatment of the leachate produced from six different coal sources resulted in products containing up to 50% total REEs from feedstocks starting with around 300 ppm.

The research on the formation of Silico-Ferrite of Calcium and Aluminium (SFCA) in the process of cooling and solidification is rarely reported. The crystallization process was observed by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical microscope in this paper. The effect of different cooling system on the microstructure and phase composition of the sinters was investigated to obtain the appropriate cooling rate to improve the metallurgical properties of sinters. The experimental results show that the crystallization of calcium ferrite is getting better when the cooling rate is decreased from water quenching to cooling in the air. There are a large number of hematite phases with interconnected crystal structure in the sample cooled in the air. In the case of the compressive strength, it was determined by the mineral composition and pore structure, higher SFCA and hematite contents in sinter cooling in the air lead to a higher strength. Glass phase in the water quenching sinter was the major reason for the lowest strength. High porosity contributes to a decrease in compressive strength for the sinter cooling in the furnace. Therefore the air cooling was the appropriate cooling rate to achieve high quality sinter under this experimental condition.

The grain size of a metal or alloy is one of the most important factors determining its properties. In steels, for example, grain size affects hardenability, toughness and machinability; in brasses, grain size is related to hardness and deep-drawing quality. In the field of heat-resistant alloys, grain size has a marked effect on ductility, creep and endurance strength. In order to determine these effects, as well as to control the properties of materials, many accurate and rapid measurements of grain size must be made. This paper presents a new and improved method for the estimation of grain size. Usual Methods OF EvaluatiNg Grain Size A frequetly used method of estimating grain size is that of comparing the image of a polished and etched specimen on the ground-glass screen of a metallographic microscope with standard grain-size charts. Several types of standards are available for use with different classes of microstructures. Geometric Grids.—The Metals Handbook' has a series of hexagonal grids ranging in size from ASTM No. I to 8. Idealized Grain Networks.—Idealized grain.boundary networks for ASTM grain sizes I to 8 are included in the American Society for Testing Materials Tentative Standard E 19 - 39 T, standard Micrographs & Metals Handbook and ASTM Tentative Standard E19-3gT contain micrographs of hypo-eutectoid and hypereutectoid steels ranging in grain size from No. I to 8. The grain size of annealed brass (diameter of the average grain in millimeters) is obtained by comparison with 10 micrographs of varying. grain size in ASTM Tentative Standard E 2-39 T. A handicap to accurate evaluation of grain size by this method is the fact that it is difficult to compare photographs in a dimly lighted room with the image on the ground-glass screen, or, if the general illumination is increased so that the printed standards may be clearly seen, the contrast of the image of the unknown is decreased. It is easier to estimate grain size by comparing a micrograph of the unknown with the grain-size standards. However, photographing every specimen on which the grain size is desired is too costly in time and materials to be practicable. For hardened steels, the Shepherd or Jernkontoret fracture grain-size standards are very accurate and useful, but this method obviously cannot be applied to ductile alloys such as brass, stainless steels and austenitic heat-resistant alloys. The grain size of a metal or alloy is one of the most important factors determining its properties. In steels, for example, grain size affects hardenability, toughness and machinability; in brasses, grain size is related to hardness and deep-drawing quality. In the field of heat-resistant alloys, grain size has a marked effect on ductility, creep and endurance strength. In order to determine these effects, as well as to control the properties of materials, many accurate and rapid measurements of grain size must be made. This paper presents a new and improved method for the estimation of grain size. Usual Methods OF EvaluatiNg Grain Size A frequetly used method of estimating grain size is that of comparing the image of a polished and etched specimen on the ground-glass screen of a metallographic microscope with standard grain-size charts. Several types of standards are available for use with different classes of microstructures. Geometric Grids.—The Metals Handbook' has a series of hexagonal grids ranging in size from ASTM No. I to 8. Idealized Grain Networks.—Idealized grain.boundary networks for ASTM grain sizes I to 8 are included in the American Society for Testing Materials Tentative Standard E 19 - 39 T, standard Micrographs & Metals Handbook and ASTM Tentative Standard E19-3gT contain micrographs of hypo-eutectoid and hypereutectoid steels ranging in grain size from No. I to 8. The grain size of annealed brass (diameter of the average grain in millimeters) is obtained by comparison with 10 micrographs of varying. grain size in ASTM Tentative Standard E 2-39 T. A handicap to accurate evaluation of grain size by this method is the fact that it is difficult to compare photographs in a dimly lighted room with the image on the ground-glass screen, or, if the general illumination is increased so that the printed standards may be clearly seen, the contrast of the image of the unknown is decreased. It is easier to estimate grain size by comparing a micrograph of the unknown with the grain-size standards. However, photographing every specimen on which the grain size is desired is too costly in time and materials to be practicable. For hardened steels, the Shepherd or Jernkontoret fracture grain-size standards are very accurate and useful, but this method obviously cannot be applied to ductile alloys such as brass, stainless steels and austenitic heat-resistant alloys. "Gondwana coal deposits are widespread and are known to occur in four continents. They are present in Brazil, India, South Africa, and Australia. From coal petrographic examinations and a detailed literature survey, it is interpreted that Gondwana coals are present also in Canada and the United States. Laurasia, or Northern Hemisphere, coals occur in the United States, Canada, and Europe. They form the main coal producing fields of the world. Megascopically, Gondwana coals have a uniform, micro-banded appearance, with a dull lustre; Laurasian coals are bright and have distinct bands of vitrain and clarain. Petrographically, Gondwana coals, compared to Laurasian coals, are lower in vitrinite, but higher in inertinite, particularly in semifusinite. Mineral matter averages 16% in Gondwana coals and 5.7% in Northern Hemisphere coals.Gondwana coals are characterized by thick seams that terminate through lithification (Versteinerung), whereby coal passes laterally into shale. Laurasian coal seams are thinner and terminate by splitting and digitation.Vitrinite/inertinite ratio data indicate deposition of the Gondwana coals in dry marshes under strong oxidizing conditions. The Laurasian coals originated in wet marshes in a reducing environment. As deduced from fossil plants and fossil spores, temperate and near arctic conditions apply for the Gondwana coals. A tropical and subtropical climate is indicated for the Laurasian deposits. The Gondwana coals were formed under allochthonous conditions. They derived from vegetation that drifted into the peat bogs. The Laurasian coals are autochthonous and originated from vegetation that grew and was buried in the peat bogs. The Gondwana coals are Late Carboniferous and Early Permian. The Laurasian coals are entirely Late Carboniferous."

This is one of a series of papers written for the consideration of operators of small gold and silver mines in the West. The paper discusses smelting schedules, general smelting practices that have a bearing on rates, and the reasons for penalties or credits for certain constituents of ores.
