THE reduction of a lump of iron ore is a complicated sequence of up to three reactions proceeding simultaneously in a gas-solid system. As the ore moves down the blast furnace into zones of higher temperature and higher reducing power, it is successively reduced through the three oxides of iron into metallic iron. The reduction process involves much more than chemical problems. Physical factors add to the complexity of the overall process. Under optimum conditions, reduction of the ore is completed at a level about one-half way down the blast furnace stock column. At this point, the ore undergoing reduction has attained a temperature of about 1000°C and has been in the furnace for about 6 hr. On the practical side, the behavior of the ore during smelting has been of great interest to operators. Unsatisfactory blast furnace operation on burdens containing magnetite ore or badly slagged sinter has often been attributed to poor re-ducibility. The question of reducibility has also been raised in formulating quality standards for agglomerates such as nodules, briquettes, and pellets. In the present investigation, the solid phases formed during reduction were studied as a step toward a better understanding of the overall process. Equilibrium Studies The iron-oxygen equilibrium diagram shown in Fig. 1 reveal; a number of facts pertinent to the gaseous reduction of iron ores. This diagram is from the work of Darken and Gurryl, 2 and represents a correlation of the best available data. Four solid phases may exist during the complete reduction of hematite to metallic iron. These are hematite (Fe2O3), magnetite (Fe3O4), wustite (FeO), and iron (Fe). The wustite phase is a solid solution which is not stable below 570°C. At this temperature the solid solution undergoes a eutectoid-type of decomposition into the phases, magnetite and iron. Thus above 570°C, the diagram dictates that a hematitic ore should pass through a four-phase sequence on reduction to metallic iron. Below 570°C, only hematite, magnetite, and iron should appear. Information on the iron-oxygen system has been derived largely from CO and H2 reduction equilibria. The Fe-C-0 relationships have been studied extensively by R. Schenck and his coworkers and well summarized by H. Schenck.3 More recent studies have been made by Darken and Gurry.1, 2 Data from these sources have been combined and plotted in Fig. 2. With respect to the Fe-H-O system, the works of Emmett and Schultz4 seem the most reliable, and these data have also been included in Fig. 2. Certain physical properties of the solid phases of the iron-oxygen system are summarized in Table I. The crystallographic information is of special interest as much of the present work has been concerned with the X-ray analysis of the products of reduction. Reduction with Hydrogen The reduction of ore with hydrogen is the net result of two or more gas-solid reactions. Above 570°C, the reaction sequence may be represented by stoichiometric stages as follows: 3Fe203+ H2e2Fe,O, + H20 [1] 2Fe3O, + 2H2 6FeOw + 2H2O [2] 6FeOw + 6H3 ^ 6Fe + 6H=O [3] Fe2O3 + 3H2 ^ 2Fe + 3H,O. [4] These reduction reactions follow the general form: A (solid) + B (gas) e C (solid) + D (gas). This type of gas-solid reaction has been investigated by Langmuirl' who has shown that such reactions can occur only at the boundary between the two solid phases. Furthermore, a nucleus of the second phase must initiate the reaction. Once such an interface exists, the reaction proceeds through a layer of the solid reaction product (C). The specific mechanisms involved will depend a great deal on the properties and condition of this particular layer. A number of heterogeneous reactions such as the dehydration of single crystals of copper penta-hydrate and the calcination of limestone follow this type of process. It should be noted that the inter-facial type of reaction also occurs even in dense polycrystalline material which simulates a mono-crystalline behavior.

THE tendency all over Europe, just as it is with us, is to go to the use of turbines for new construction or replacement of old steam or even gas engines. 'The lower construction cost and the lower operating cost, when they can have high steam temperatures and pressures, together with their efficiency, is the cause of this change to turbines, both high and low pressure. The present trend is to equip plants with modern, efficient steam boilers, turbines, etc., and gradually work into high-pressure superheated steam equipment to accomplish a saving. One company has just completed a 375 to 400 lb., 700 deg. superheated steam installation and turbo-blowers with this end in view. Some of our new steam plants are using 350 lb. working pressure.

AGGLOMERATION U.S. 4,067,727 - In the sintering of a charge of iron oxide ore, a fuel and a flux on a travelling grate machine, the dust problem is minimized by providing a plurality of cooling zones and by directing heated dust-laden air from a first cooling zone to the sintering zone wherein the dust is filtered from the air by the material being sintered. Air from a further cooling zone can be exhausted directly to the atmosphere. Dust removal in the cooling zone is improved by using a purging zone in which higher pressure air agitates the dust in the sintered material. "According to the legislation, valorization type, origin and characteristics of waste material, various standard procedures are available to evaluate environmental impacts. A Mn-rich slag was sampled from a metallurgical plant. After its characterization (elementary analysis and mineralogy), five standard procedures were carried out (i.e. TCLP, EN 12457-1). Each fixed parameter of the standards was systematically studied in a large range: pH, Liquid/Solid ratio, contact time. For example, EN 12457-1 led to a low ME mobilization, increasing with the L/S ratio, the contact time and an acidic pH. As a conclusion, the representativeness of the considered parameters and their potential variations are predominant to assess of the real environmental impact during slag reuse. Introduction Recent studies have been carried out about environmental impacts of waste containing metallic elements (ME) because of their potential mobility [1-7]. Indeed, slags are either dumped or valorized in various activities such as building materials. In order to assess environmental risk, various standard procedures are used depending on country legislation, origin of waste and valorization way. Results of leaching tests are linked either to special legislation (e.g. Dumping: EC, Council Decision 2003/33/EC, Construction products: EC, Council Directive 89/106/EEC) or to legal levels used in drinking water (Directive 98/83/CE) when leachates could migrate to groundwater. If ME in leachates are lower than drinking water authorized levels, the waste will be considered as non-hazardous. On the contrary, if the leachable amounts exceed them, the question about the risk has to be posed. Beyond the abundance of leaching tests available, variety of operational conditions induced by these regulatory tests does not make the choice easier. According to operational conditions induced, ME release could vary from one test to another one. ME concentrations in leachates depend on pH, Liquid/Solid ratio, contact time and particle size [3]. To highlight the importance of these operational parameters, potential risk for valorization of a manganese-rich slag was assessed by comparing several standard leaching protocols [8-12] with a global study dealing with the influence of operational conditions. For each regulatory protocol, the most influential parameters (L/S ratio, pH, particle size and contact time) have been studied in a large range."

Arch Mineral Corporation and Rocky Mountain Energy's Medicine Bow Mine in Wyoming presented an interesting challenge to the concept of mining a multiple-seam, dipping coal in the Hanna Basin. The 3362 and 2962 pits at MBCC were designed in a multiple seam coal consisting of 4 (and in some areas 5) bands of coal; these coal beds are all in the Ferris formation. The area was subject to some localized faulting and a major fault caused a physical restraint that we mined up against in our final cut. Using a 1570 dragline as the principal stripping machine, the concept of developing a bench for stripping the lower seams from the low-wall side of the pit was initiated. The results of this method of stripping were very satisfying for this pit through the completion of pit life and prompted us to use it in other areas at MBCC and at our other operations. Mining a dipping coal presents a small twist to conventional "flat" coal stripping. The spoil has a tendency to continually try to slide into the pit and the increased overburden on each cut as you mine down the dip creates spoil problems unless adequate design provisions are made prior to stripping.

Mintek has been involved in numerous projects to remove Fe and Mn from dilute Co sulphate solutions by means of oxidative precipitation using air/SO2. Test work was done using a gas induction system, designed and supplied by Outotec. Various aspects, such as SO2 concentration, SO2 flowrate, impeller rotation speed and pH were investigated on a 2 m3 scale. Batch tests were performed using a residence time of 5 hours. Mintek has been involved in numerous projects to remove Fe and Mn from dilute Co sulphate solutions by means of oxidative precipitation using air/SO2. Test work was done using a gas induction system, designed and supplied by Outotec. Various aspects, such as SO2 concentration, SO2 flowrate, impeller rotation speed and pH were investigated on a 2 m3 scale. Batch tests were performed using a residence time of 5 hours. Impeller rotation speeds of 0-220 rpm were tested, and it seemed that speeds of between 80 and 220 rpm gave similar Fe and Mn removal rates. Co and Cu losses were generally below 1% and 5% respectively at pH 3.

"Spent lead battery recycling still shows few weak points in the achievement of a 100% recycling of different waste matters and by- products arising from the recycling process. Some of said problems are dealing with aqueous streams outgoing the recycling plant, and more particularly, a) the waste waters discarded from the breaking and separation unit, b) purification of the spent electrolyte drained from waste batteries and upgrade to a quality compatible with full re-use by the batteries’ manufacturers, c) purification of the mother liquors discarded in the sodium sulfate crystallization process so to produce a salt of commercial grade. All of the above listed problems have been satisfactorily overcome applying an electrochemical process that, through different process conditions and parameters, is able to remove the harmful impurities that hinder the successful commercialization of such by products, or, at least, that can avoid heavy and expensive treatment plant and operation.IntroductionAlmost 100% of commercial lead and lead alloys produced by secondary lead plants is recycled to the new lead accumulators manufacture. The other by-products and residues produced through the lead recycling process may be classified into two groups:a) matters reusable in the new accumulators production processb) matters produced as a result of various reagents and additives used in the recycling process, to be sold to different market sectorsQuality and saleability of by-products are significant points for the economics of the secondary lead plant operation, because, if said by-products are not saleable, they are just wastes, so offsetting potential revenues, and, at the same time, adding a heavy burden to operating cost, like disposal cost [1]. When looking at a typical, modern lead scrap batteries recovery cycle, it is quite evident that we are still rather far from dealing with a waste-less technology (fig.1).The group a) includes 3 by-products produced through the breaking process: among those matters the polypropylene only usually reaches a standard quality suitable for sale to lead manufacturing sector or to other sectors as well. The other two by-products, electrolyte and separators, do not still reach, through a viable and effective regeneration process, a quality standard sufficient for their re-use in the lead batteries sector ."

Believing that the results accomplished in the mill of the Churchill Milling Co., Wonder, Nev., during the fiscal year ended Sept. 30, 1914, will be of interest, I am presenting the more prominent facts and figures showing the progress made in treating this ore with especial reference to tonnage, supplies, costs, and extractions. The mill is situated at Wonder, Nev., in the Wonder mining district, 55 miles east from Fallon, Nev., the nearest railroad point. All supplies are hauled this distance by freight teams, this method of transportation having been found more reliable for continuous service than truclis, the price paid for hauling being slightly under one cent per pound. In this mill are treated the ores of the Nevada Wonder Mining Co. Ore is Unusually Hard The company which tested this ore before the mill was built reported "This ore is an unusually hard, tough, oxidized quartz, carrying a small percentage of high-grade sulphides, containing good values in both gold and silver. None of the rebellious silver minerals appear to occur in appreciable quantities." ... "In regard to the mill tonnage this ore is unusually hard and tough, and a high stamp duty cannot be expected. Using a 20-mesh screen and 1,050-lb. stamps, our best work was three tons per stamp per 24 hours." It is very probable that the ore delivered to the testing plant was harder than the regular mill run has proved to be. However, at present the mine is developed to a depth of 1,000 ft., and still shows hard ore in places at this depth in about the same proportion as on the upper levels from which the test ore came; during this year's work, ore was treated from nearly all levels. Together with this hard ore in the mill feed a considerable proportion appears to be broken down and tending to crumble, thus making an ideal mixture for stamp milling. A small proportion of talc is also noticeable, which sometimes increases in amount to the point where it is very troublesome in the thickeners.

"Some non-flotation chemicals are added to flotation circuits directly and indirectly to control issues such as scaling and dust in other areas of the operations. Since dosage levels are generally not high, a standard laboratory float test may not be able to determine the effect of a specific chemical on the productivity of the flotation circuit. This paper presents a laboratory testing protocol that uses kinetic float studies to test the effect of normal to extreme doses of antiscalant and dust chemistries (5–100 g/t). Results indicate that this protocol helps to predict potential interference by a particular chemistry on the flotation circuit.RÉSUMÉ Certains produits chimiques ne servant pas à la flottation sont ajoutés directement et indirectement aux circuits de flottation afin de contrôler des problèmes tels que l’entartage et la poussière dans d’autres secteurs des opérations. Étant donné que les niveaux de dosage sont généralement faibles, un essai standard de flottation en laboratoire pourrait ne pas être en mesure de déterminer l’effet d’un produit chimique spécifique sur la productivité du circuit de flottation. Le présent article définit une procédure d’essai en laboratoire qui utilise des études cinétiques de flottation pour vérifier l’effet de doses normales à extrêmes de produits chimiques antitartre et anti-poussière (5 à 100 g/t). The Bureau of Mines has been performing research to lower the dust exposure of workers at mineral processing operations for a number of years. This research has mainly been directed at source control techniques in an effort to lower a worker's dust exposure at a particular job function. In some cases, this control technology provided a carryover effect in lowering the exposure of workers at other locations, but for the most part had very little effect in lowering dust levels throughout an entire mill building. Recently, the Bureau became aware of several mineral processing operations having problems with high over-all mill dust levels. These operations were all using baghouse-type collectors to address their most serious dust contamination areas. Although these major dust sources were being controlled, there were numerous minor dust sources that were not. These minor dust sources were causing dust levels in these operations to gradually increase as the day or shift progressed. The intent of this work was to determine general guidelines and design criteria for operations that may be interested in implementing a total mill ventilation system. Most mill buildings can be considered a closed system and thus any dust that is not being controlled within the structure, will cause dust levels to gradually increase over the shift. A total mill ventilation system should be designed to draw clean make-up air in near the base of the mill. This air provides general purging and may clear some dust laden areas throughout the mill structure. This air should be discharged at or near the top of the structure, where it is not a contaminant to plant personnel working outside. Without this exhaust system, dust can exit the building through open doors, windows, etc., and contaminate outside plant workers. This dust can also be recirculated back into the mill building causing additional contamination problems. A total mill ventilation system is not a stand-alone technique, but is a supplemental technique to assist other localized dust control systems.

Autonomous mining systems have been deployed for improving mine performance. However, there is a fear of job losses. Adoption of autonomous systems is envisaged to be resisted by major stakeholders in Ghana due to high illiteracy and unemployment. This paper assesses the preparedness of Ghanaian mining stakeholders for the adoption of autonomous systems to Ghana’s surface mining industry. Closed and open-ended questionnaires were administered to mine stakeholders. Respondents generally expressed unwillingness to accept autonomous systems into Ghanaian mines due to fear of increased unemployment. We propose setting up a mining education fund (MEF) for training stakeholders in autonomous mining systems. INTRODUCTION Mining contributes enormously to the sustenance and growth of global and national economies through the provision of raw materials, employment, revenues and foreign exchange (Carvalho, 2017; ICMM, 2017; Cordes et al., 2016; Solomon et al., 2008; Walser, 2000). The International Council on Mining & Metals (ICMM, 2014) reported that globally, formal mining employs approximately 2.5 million people. Many resource-rich countries, especially the developing ones, have experienced strong socioeconomic growth propelled by the discovery and extraction of valuable minerals. McMahon and Moreira (2014) reported a positive linkage between mining and sustainable development. They revealed that averagely, resource-rich countries have improved Human Development Index (HDI) scores than countries without mineral resources. Mining remains a crucial industry in Ghana’s economic development (Bermúdez-Lugo, 2016; Amponsah-Tawiah and Dartey-Baah, 2011). Over the years, mining has contributed significantly to the gross domestic product (GDP) of Ghana. In 2013, mining accounted for 1.7% of Ghana’s GDP and about 19% of government revenues (Ghana Chamber of Mines, 2015). The Ghana Chamber of Mines also reported that mining contributed over 50% of foreign direct investment, 37% of export earnings and 1.1% of direct employment revenues. The US Department of Energy (DOE) estimates that 65% of coal, 92% of metals and 96% of industrial minerals are mined using surface mining methods (DOE, 2007). Generally, mining is a capital-intensive venture, with high operating cost, hence there is a constant demand for mining companies to seek efficient cost reduction and production maximization strategies. One strategy being pursued keenly is automation, which is noted to improve productivity, and worker safety at minimal cost. According to Parreira (2013), mining automation involves direct teleoperation whereby workers remotely control the mining process using computers from a control room.

This subject was introduced last April in a paper presented in Birmingham, Alabama, by James E. Elkin, General Superintendent of Duquesne's Coal Department. This paper will cover some of the same data and in addition it will update and further describe our experience. Our Portal No. 3 was started in June 1965 with battery tractor-trailer face haulage. This mine is operating in the Sewickley seam in Dunkard Township, Greene County, in Southwestern Pennsylvania as shown on Fig. 1. The Warwick group of mines fronts on the Monongahela River and extends westward for some ten miles as shown on Fig. 2.

ASARCO's copper smelter at Hayden, Arizona has been upgraded to meet the increasing Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) environmental standards. Fortunately, means were found to accomplish these standards and provide for more efficient operations. With the adaptation of oxygen flash smelting and other related operations at Hayden, ASARCO has turned to the use of minicomputers and microprocessors for inter-plant communications and local area process control. The applications of distributive and computer controls to the plant operations at the Hayden smelter are discussed in this paper.

In constructing a financial model of a project significant effort is expended on capital and operating cost estimation, commodity price forecasts, and choice of discount rates while uncertainty in the primary input, the reserve, is often completely overlooked. The aim of this paper is to highlight the impact of uncertainty in the resource/reserve estimation process on the assessment of the financial performance of a project. Four qualitative processes have an impact on resource/reserve uncertainty. These stages are: 1.Ore definition 2.Geological interpretation 3.Resource estimation 4.Ore reserve estimation and mine planning. Each stage contains a number of tasks that may be considered as key performance activities (KPAs). Optimizing the manner in which these KPAs are completed can remove a great deal of uncertainty and error from the resource/reserve process. Examination of these KPAs within a company can also provide an insight to the quality of the information underlying the project. This will allow the company to identify any shortcomings in the data and to assess the resulting risks (Gilfillan, 1998). A hypothetical financial model based on a gold operation has been used to estimate the potential effect of resource/reserve uncertainty on revenue. Monte Carlo simulation has been employed to simulate a number of hypothetical scenarios: 1.a base case scenario which assumes no major errors or biases, but contains realistic margins for uncertainty that would exist in any project where work is being completed to the limit of best endeavours 2.a poor sampling scenario which assumes poor sampling practice and lack of understanding of sample preparation 3.a poor resource estimation scenario which assumes poor modelling and inappropriate choice of interpolation technique, and 4. a ?typical? scenario which represents a project where the majority of KPAs are not performed as best as they could be. The results show that realistic uncertainty ranges can generate changes in the estimate of potential revenue of plus or minus 30%.Therefore, it is important to allow for errors in these processes in any financial analysis or feasibility study. It is recommended that, when building a financial model, are view of relevant resource/reserve KPAs be carried out and appropriate ranges for uncertainty be applied to provide a range of potential outcomes. These outcomes can then be factored into the detailed cash flow analysis in order to ensure that technical uncertainty is built into financial decisions.

The goal of this paper is to present the carbon footprint of Chilean cathodic copper, as a function of the electricity generation mix, ore grade, and process efficiency. Ore grades and acid leach-solvent extraction-electrowinning (LX-SX-EW) yields in the range 0.5-1.0% and 60-80%, respectively, were considered here. Additionally, electricity supply from two Chilean suppliers, SING (1.0 ton CO2/MWh) and SIC (0.4 ton CO2/MWh) was assessed. Simulation results show that oxide plants located in northern Chile, served by the SING network, feature carbon footprint within 4.3 - 11.4 MWh I ton cathodic copper, as compared with 3.5 - 9.3 MWh I ton copper in plants served by SIC. The footprint was found to increase as ore wade and process yields decrease.

En ese sentido, el presente texto describe el proceso de la Mesa de Diálogo con participación del sector civil, autoridades y Anglo American, que buscó consensos para el desarrollo de Moquegua. Así el diálogo, la transparencia y la generación de confianza se ven fortalecidos mensualmente con la participación de Anglo American en las reuniones de la Comisión, donde se decide y se informa del trabajo y avances desarrollados para el cumplimento de cada uno de los compromisos asumidos. Así también se adelanta el cumplimiento de algunos de ellos considerados como prioritarios para la población, ya que los compromisos están asignados para diferentes etapas de la mina (preconstrucción, construcción, operación y cierre).

The South Island Line (East) will be a medium-capacity railway covering approximately 7 km from Admiralty Station to South Horizons Station on the south side of Aberdeen Harbour in Hong Kong, with intermediate stations at Ocean Park, Wong Chuk Hang and Lei Tung.South Island Line (East) Contract 904 project is located on the island of Ap Lei Chau at the southern side of Hong Kong island and requires extensive construction works to be completed in close proximity to the existing residential estates of South Horizons and Lei Tung. The project also has areas of significant cultural heritage, including 18th and 19th century temples and historical gravesites. Owing to the site access constraints and location for the project, detailed planning and methodology innovations have been required to ensure the most effective and responsible means of delivering the project works. To excavate the tunnels using drill-and-blast techniques in these restricted locations, the maximum instantaneous charge weight that could be fired while blasting was severely limited. To overcome these restrictions, the project team developed and pioneered the use of ‘deck loading’ in Hong Kong to minimise the impact of blasting operations and has successfully implemented double- and triple-deck blasting operations during the completion of tunnel excavation works.Upon completion of the drill-and-blast excavation, the tunnel lining works were completed using both in situ concrete lining with travelling forms and permanent shotcrete works.CITATION:Curlewis, W, Cuthbert, Z and Hake, D, 2014. .NONE of the methods now in use for the transportation of materials underground is entirely free from more or less serious objection. The great flexibility, ease, of control and economy of operation of electric tramming are accompanied by the serious menace of a trolley-wire distributing system. As the gasoline locomotive has even greater flexibility of application and requires no similar dangerous distributing system, it might be considered a safety device which would make possible the elimination of the dangerous trolley system were it not possessed of other objectionable qualities peculiar to itself. It is found that the exhaust gases from the engine may be injurious to the health of those breathing the air in which the locomotive has been operating. While electric shock may kill the individual who makes contact with uninsulated parts, the gasoline engine may be detrimental to the health of all those who have to work within the atmosphere corrupted by exhaust gases. The degree of pollution meas-ures the magnitude of the menace. This may be negligible at times, but with careless operation it becomes serious. The exhaust gases from an engine are composed of, nitrogen, a little free oxygen, hydrocarbons, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide, the last two being considered dangerous. The presence of carbon dioxide as a product of combustion of the gasoline was recognized as an objection from the beginning of the use of these machines, but attention was called to the fact that the amount produced was relatively small as compared to that from other sources of this gas, and it was not likely to be made in dangerous quantities. The effect of carbon dioxide, except in relatively large percentages, is confined to the effect it may have in reducing the oxygen content of the air that is breathed.

One often sees in the papers, in these days of ecological consciousness, estimates of the quantity of land that has been "devasted," "ruined," or "destroyed," by surface or strip mining, especially for coal. One feels sure that coal miners must have been the first to discover the art of excavation and that the public didn't know of its existance until five or 10 years ago! Estimates of the acreage vary widely with most of them sounding somewhat unreal. One estimate of 175,000 acres in Alabama appeared in one newspaper article and the implication was that all of this was mining for coal. The question was raised anew last summer when the author began working on a land use estimate utilizing aerial photographs, a preliminary project to the Alabama Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS) contract presently being fulfilled. One land use category was barren or waste land and aside from some sand beaches in the two coastal counties in Alabama, recently strip mined land constituted most of that category. It quickly became apparent that old stripping was very hard to detect so that estimates from aerial photographs are not accurate. With regard to relatively new stripping, a thin veneer of reflective dirt washed over the countryside may result in a considerable overestimate of the excavated area. Actually, there is a way to estimate the area excavated by strip mining using published Bureau of Mines figures. At least three sets of data are needed: (1) Coal production figures, (2) average thickness of coalbeds mined, and (3) an accurate recovery figure.
