THE Isley furnace control, here presented as a novelty in furnace construction, is, in principle, one of the oldest methods of maintaining furnace heat for industrial purposes. Records unearthed in Egyptian tombs and the primitive methods of melting metal practiced by African tribes today indicate that fanning the fire and forcing the furnace by bellows have been an effective means of regulating heat for man's work during thousands of years. Even today, these cruder forms of mechanical draft production are still nn use within the borders of this most highly developed industrial land. Stacks, as we know them, are of com- paratively recent historical age but their attractive simplicity and seeming effectiveness have made them exceedingly popular. And so we find one of the most important types of furnace the world has even known, the open-hearth furnace, duly and more or less properly equipped with a chimney. The regenerative, or reversing, type of furnace, how-ever, required another mechanism between its hearth and the stack to provide a means for alternately con-necting one side and the other of its system of regen-erative chambers and flues to the stack and to a source of fuel and air supply respectively. Various types of reversing valves were developed, some of which are re-markably well designed for maximum efficiency and ease of installation as well as operation. However, this combination has a number of inherent faults which are so difficult to correct as to make efforts in the direction of improving over-all efficiency almost futile. These inherent difficulties are as follows: (1) The necessarily high temperature at which the gases must be delivered to the stack in order to make it operative. (2) The great temperature difference incidental to the reversal of flue gas and air and consequently the large variation in preheated air and fuel delivered to the furnace dur-ing the cycle. (3) The leakages and resistances created by the reversing apparatus and the complicated flues necessary. (4) The inadequate range of control af-forded by the natural draft system, especially under adverse atmospheric conditions.

Maximising shareholder value is a widely stated strategic goal of many mining companies. Mining projects can be capital intensive and achieving good returns is essential to encourage future investment in the industry. Despite the widely accepted importance of shareholder value, the minerals industry is often accused of providing relatively poor returns when compared to other industries. There are many recent and well publicised examples of minerals companies that have failed to deliver value to their shareholders. There are numerous business improvement initiatives employed within the mining industry to assist mine operators improve performance. Some are more effective at creating value than others. Benchmarking is one technique that is commonly used to identify performance gaps and target and prioritise opportunities for improvement. However to be effective, Benchmarking must be used appropriately and result in actions that lead to measurable operational improvement. When conducting a Benchmarking project it is important to remember that the aim should be to improve value. For this to be achieved, the strategic goals must be incorporated into the process. This paper details a structured and comprehensive approach to conducting a successful Benchmarking project. Focusing on Benchmarking as a technique for measuring and improving operational performance in underground mines, the underlying drivers of best practice in underground mining are identified.

Differential reduction and expansion or shrinkage of hematite under the influence of intimately associated foreign oxides may be a source of stress formation and sinter degradation during blast furnace reduction. To study specific effects, synthetically pre-pared hematite powder evenly doped with 1% by weight of several elements present as oxides, was pressed into tablets and sintered at high temperature prior to reduction. Continuous thermo-gravimetric and dilatometric analyses were per-formed on the sintered tablets as these were being subjected to reduction under simulated blast furnace time/temperature/gas composition conditions up to 1183 K. These findings were coupled with observations on the microstructure of tablets removed from various stages of the reduction process.

Many gold producing states are requiring rinsing of spent heaps to render the leached ore compatible with the environment and are placing restrictions on effluent pa, cyanide, and metals concentrations. Parameters which may affect efficient rinsing of heaps have been investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in laboratory column studies. Rinse profiles for cyanide, metals, and pH as a function of the volume of water passed through the spent ore are presented. Fresh water rinsing of spent ore in columns showed that rinsing of cyanide was not affected by the rinse solution application rate. Interrupted rinsing with a rest period between applications reduced the volume of water required to meet effluent cyanide concentrations. chemical oxidation of the effluent with recycle of the rinse solutions reduced effluent cyanide concentrations and the volume of waste solution generated. Water rinsing was not successful in reducing the alkalinity of the cement agglomerated ore. A dilute acid solution had to be applied after cyanide removal to reduce effluent pa levels to specified limits.

"The wastewater emitted by gold chemical industry contained vast of different heavy metal ion, such as Zn, Cu and Ni etc. Among them Zn is the main ion in the waste water which causes the serious environment pollution. A method of preparing a kind of resin which is used for the removal of Zn by magnetic adsorbent was developed and was applied in practice. This adsorbent is a chitosan made of a kind of Fe3O4-chitosan modified by epichlorohydrin. The adsorption capacity of the absorbent and it was concluded that under the laboratory conditions, the maximum adsorbing capacity of this adsorbent could be 287.58 mg/g. The absorbent was also applied in the wastewater emitted by a gold industry in Shandong province. Its performance was tested and the result showed that the concentration of Zn ion in the wastewater was reduced from 0.58 mg/L to 0.0174 mg/L. What is more, the adsorption rate could be more than 97% when the dosage was 100L/m3 after adsorbing for 1h. Many different metals participate to this reaction besides the gold ion in this processing, so that the composition of the water is very complex. The waste water emitted by gold chemistry industry contains large amount of heavy metals. Definitely, if it was discharged without any treatment, the water would threaten the environment. The recuperation of any ion in the water would mitigate the pollution. Ion exchange resin, which is an effective material to do the water treatment with low cost, became widely applicated in this field [Yu-jiao Wang,2013]. Different kinds of resin were developed and the influence factors such as pH, adsorption properties and selectivity for different ions were investigated [CA Cruz et al,2018; PawanKumar et al.2016; Y Zhang, et al,2010; and ShengingSun, Aiqin Wang, 2006;]. The waste water mentioned in this article has a high Zn concentration, so a magic resin for Zn adsorption selectively we designed was used to manage this water. And the recovery of Zn could not only contribute to pollution abatement but also a best way to settle a dispute to the short of Zn resource. So the article mainly describes the preparation and the application of a kind of magnetic adsorbent used for the removal of Zn both in laboratory and industry. The aim of this article is to compare the effect of this resin in industry and laboratory?"

The uninitiated, first-time visitor to the Copper Cliff Smelter of The International Nickel Company frequently finds it strange that the world's largest nickel producing works is located at a site seemingly named in honour of another metal. Industry-wise persons who know The International Nickel Company through its nickel producing, fabricating and sales organizations can be just as surprised to learn that Inco's annual copper production from the Sudbury area mines nearly equals that of nickel. But when the history of the mines and smelters of the Sudbury district is reviewed it is impossible to separate the stories of copper and nickel. In fact, going even further back in time (I), it was due to the similarity in appearance of the nickel bearing mineral niccolite (NiAs) to that of copper ore that led nickel to be tagged with the rather uncomplimentary name of kupfer-nickel or Old Nick's Copper - The Devil's Copper. This was in approximately 1650 and it would take another hundred years, until 1751, before Axel Cronstedt of Sweden obtained nickel in its pure form and permitted it to take its own place in the family of metals. One hundred more years passed before mining came to northern Ontario and approximately one hundred thirty before the beginnings of development of the Sudbury Basin.

The reactions of alumina and alumina monohydrate with wet hydrogen fluoride gas were studied by the Federal Bureau of Mines to determine the feasibility of producing commercial-grade aluminum fluoride from offgases generated by pyrohydrolysis of siliceous fluorspars. The test results showed than an aluminum fluoride reactor operating at maximum efficiency could retain 96 percent of the fluorine contained in off-gases generated by pyrohydrolysis of siliceous fluorspar. The requirements are a reactor temperature of 200° C. and a reactor entrance gas containing 5 mole-percent hydrogen fluoride. Partial pressure equilibrium constants were determined for the reaction of alumina monohydrate and wet hydrogen fluoride gas from 200° to 350° C. and for the reaction of alumina and wet hydrogen fluoride gas from 350° to 700° C. Both reactions are reversible, and they proceed in directions that are dependent upon the temperature and the relative HF:H2O concentration. Logarithms of the equilibrium constants were used to plot the reaction isobars; these can be used to calculate the theoretical maximum efficiency of a reactor processing wet hydrogen fluoride gas between 200° and 700° C. The theoretical maximum efficiency decreases with increasing temperature.

Varying flow regimes, particle populations and consequently different types of bubble-particle interactions characterize the different zones of a flotation cell. The understanding of the role of the different zones of turbulent intensity on the particle-bubble interactions is of primary importance to optimization and scale-up of flotation processes and machinery. In order to study particle-bubble interaction in turbulent flow a completely new approach was taken. A laboratory scale stationary turbulence device was developed and built. The set-up allows the observation of particle-bubble interactions in various turbulence intensities, particle and bubble sizes and surfactant concentrations. The experimental set-up consists of a transparent, specially designed tank in which liquid flows between carefully designed and placed obstacles that create different turbulent flow fields. Bubble-particle aggregates are introduced into this turbulent zone. The behaviour of the aggregates, such as attachment /detachment of particles to/from air bubbles is recorded by a High Speed Imaging (HSI) system (5400 fps). The images are then analysed and the dependence of attachment/detachment process is described as a function of turbulent intensity in different conditions for different surfactant concentrations. This paper introduces this method to study particle-bubble interactions in turbulent flow and correlation to Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation. CFD modelling is validated for two and three phase systems; liquid-gas with liquid and solid tracers respectively. The CFD simulations using the RANS k-S turbulence model showed good correlation to the experimental data and the experimental method is a promising tool for investigation of particle-bubble interaction in turbulent flow.

the leaching of near-by rocks, had had no other result than to bring out from obscurity three certain features of practical lmport, all the labor of that controversy would have been well expended. These three points are : (1) a clear distinction between the vadose and the profound zones; (2) a determination of the manner in which the latter may be invaded by conditions of the former; and (3) an establishment of the general truth of the lateral-secretion theory when vadose conditions prevail, and of the. ascension-theory under profound conditions. In the practical consideration. of ore-deposits these generalizations are fundamental. Their wider application must be productive of great industrial advantages. Of first importance in the broader scientific survey of ore-genesis is the recognition of a sharp distinction between vadose and profound conditions. To many who listened to Professor Posepny's remarkable paper, read at the Chicago session of the Institute during the Columbian Exposition in 1893, this seemed, as Dr. S. F. Emmons has already observed, its most valuable and suggestive feature. Notwithstanding Posepny's implications to the contrary, and his vigorous berating of Sandberger's views, the immediate and lasting .effect of the . argument was really to strengthen greatly Sandberger's position. For it completely and sharply separated the lateral-secretionists from the ascensionists, raising the sphere of the former bodily above the line of permanent water-level and at the same time confining .the sphere of the latter to regions below that horizon. A little later, Professor Van Rise showed in some detail how meteoric waters may deeply invade the profound zone and carry vadose conditions into it. The zonal limitations of two great and apparently opposed agencies being thus definitely fixed, it is found that neither of the theories based thereon is susceptible of general application. If the generalizations of the lateral-secretionist be propounded solely for vadose conditions, we are able to agree with all of his more-important contentions; while there is general acquiescence in the views of the ascensionist if their application be restricted to the profound zone. Having established that sodium chloride reduces the incendivity of explosives, the Bureau of Mines studied the effect of sodium nitrate in reducing ignition hazards. Gallery experiments showed that sodium nitrate reduced the incendivity of certain explosives to 8 percent natural gas in air but increased their incendivity to coal dust predispersed in air. Laboratory experiments using hot jets from explosions of stoichiometric mixtures of methane-oxygen-nitrogen showed that both sodium chloride and sodium nitrate reduced the incendivity to methane, to mixtures of coal dust and methane) and to coal dust. The difference between the gallery and laboratory results with respect to coal dust is attributed to temperature-time effects.

The Palabora underground mining project is a state-of-the-art shaft mining system that will prove to be a benchmark in its field for years to come. An integration of modern technology?both in application and development?has resulted in a shaft system that is intrinsically holistic. Every aspect of the mining and production process has undergone thorough investigation, simulation and innovation to ensure that every component is selected by design and not simply conforming to past practice or trends. The process philosophy includes proven technology such as to promote the lowest operating cost and process time with the highest yield. The underground mining system is in the final stages of commissioning and will shortly be producing a nominal 30 000 tons per day with a predominantly automated system. This paper discusses the complete state-of-art shaft system developed for the Palabora underground mine, and refers particularly to the headgear, the winders, the conveyances and the shaft guide system, as well as the loading system developed specifically for the high performance requirements of the mine.

Electrical resistance heating to effect thermal fragmentation of semiconductive rock was examined by the Bureau of Mines. Tests were carried out on copper-bearing ores of the Nonesuch Shale Formation in the laboratory and in the the field at White Pine, Mich. Fieldwork included primary and secondary breakage tests. Heating tests on in situ rock failed to produce thermal dam-age to an extent considered useful; however, boulders up to 30 ft3 were effectively broken by the method. Power input to the test rock was taken from a 50-kV, 5-amp dc power supply.

Workers using vibrating hand tools have the potential for developing health problems associated with repeated forceful actions and exposures to hand-transmitted vibration. Hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) and other hand-arm system disorders have been associated with such exposures.1-2 To better assess health risks, comprehensive evaluations of these exposures must include quantitative assessments of hand-tool coupling forces; unfortunately, no standardized method for quantifying hand forces exists. Handle instrumentation may be ill-suited for some field environments. Psychophysical force-recall techniques may provide alternatives to handle instrumentation. A thorough understanding of the effects of vibration and other factors on force-recall accuracy and reliability is important before such methods are applied in risk assessments. Methods In this study, the effects of vibration and other factors on the accuracy of psychophysical force-recall were explored in two experiments. Twelve male subjects participated in the first experiment. The second experiment employed 20 participants (10 female, 10 male). In each experiment, participants applied specific grip and push forces to an instrumented handle mounted on a shaker system. Participants were exposed to sinusoidal vibration at frequencies that ranged from 0 Hz to 250 Hz. Three levels of applied force (low: grip = 15 N/push = 25 N, medium: grip = 30 N/push = 50 N, and high: grip = 45 N/push = 75 N ) and two levels of vibration magnitude (low: ANSI 4-8-hr limit and high: ANSI <0.5-hr limit)3 were examined. During the vibration exposure period, participants were provided with visual feedback while they attempted to “memorize” the applied grip and push forces. At the conclusion of the vibration exposure/force memorization period and a controlled rest period, the participants tried to duplicate the grip and push forces on a non-vibrating handle without the aid of visual feedback. The effects of different vibration frequencies, vibration magnitudes, and grip and push force levels were tested in a random order from trial to trial. Results Participants tended to overestimate grip and push forces. Depending on exposure conditions, error means ranged from 2 N to 10 N. The ANOVA revealed that force-recall errors for exposures between 31.5 Hz and 63 Hz were significantly higher than those at other vibration frequencies (p < 0.05). The frequency effect is depicted in Figure 1. Error means were greater when participants were exposed to the higher vibration magnitude (mean = 9.1 N, 95% CI = 8.2-10.1 N) when compared with the lower vibration magnitude (mean = 4.9 N, 95% CI = 3.9-5.8 N) (p < 0.05). Between 1987 and 1988, the Bureau of Mines studied the mineral resources of the White River National Forest and part of the Arapaho National Forest to appraise the resources present and to determine the types of deposits, and their location, that could be mined economically if sufficient demand and metal prices existed. The study included a comprehensive literature search and a limited amount of field investigation of minerals and mining activity in and near the Forest. This report summarizes a more comprehensive minerals report on the Forests prepared by the Bureau of Mines and was written for a general audience without a background in geology or related fields. Mineral resource information indicates that in the Gore Range-the area between Tennessee Pass and Gilman may contain large base-and precious-metal deposits, and could be the focus of exploration activity in the near future. The Breckenridge mining district was found to have a moderate to high likelihood for mineral exploration and possible development of gold. Recent exploration and minor development work has occurred in several other areas: Montezuma, Kokomo-Tenmile, and Upper Blue River districts, and portions of the Sawatch Range.

Sin embargo, las redes de control y saneamiento son exigidas por los aumentos de producción, generando un aumento en los volúmenes de información de control en los equipos de operación y mantención. Por ello, se requiere analizar la necesidad de mejorar la disponibilidad, confiabilidad y robustez de las redes existentes en las diferentes áreas de la minera. En ese sentido, el presente texto señala el proyecto de la mina Codelco Chuquicamata que consiste en evaluar, diagnosticar y optimizar las condiciones de las redes ControlNet y EtherNet/IP que existen en diferentes áreas de la mina, a fin de fortalecer las redes mencionadas y así optimizar la comunicaciones de las mismas.

REPORTS received from operating companies by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, indicated marked progress in the reduction of injuries to employees in the coking industry in 1951 as compared with 1950. The fatality rate (0.14) per million man-hours of exposure declined 33 percent and was the second best performance since statistics on the industry were first collected in 1916. The nonfatal-injury rate (10.94), the best since 1940, declined 8 percent and was bettered only in 8 of the past 36 years. The nonfatal rate is based on all injuries resulting in loss of time for more than the remainder of the day on which the injury occurred. The exposure to hazard, as represented by the number of man-hours of work time during the year, was 7 percent higher than in 1950 and, except for the year 1943, was the highest since 1920. The fatality rate for men employed at beehive-coke ovens decreased 16 percent and the nonfatal-injury rate 23 percent, while the man-hours of work time or exposure increased slightly over 16 percent. The fatality and nonfatal-injury rates at byproduct ovens declined 33 and 2 ½ percent, respectively, while the number of man-hours worked increased 6 percent.

Computational models are very useful for studying many of the physical mechanisms which can cause sample bias. Within such models we can predict the trajectories of all individual particles and thereby make observations which are not possible for physical systems. Physical mechanisms highlighted include congestion at the cutter aperture, particles bouncing over the cutter aperture, air drag on fine particles, waves of material being bulldozed off the belt by the upstream side of the body of square cutters, and particles being thrown by the leading edges of cross-belt cutter blades. Having identified relevant physical mechanisms for an existing cutter, we can estimate the extent to which they are likely to result in unequal representation of portions of a stream of material and thereby estimate the maximum likely sample bias.

Mining operations consume a considerable amount of energy, and while reduced energy consumption is desirable, it is not always clear how to achieve this goal. Understanding the opportunities to optimize energy consumption is crucial, and the key to understanding is visualization. One option is the Sankey diagram, which has been used for over 100 years to visualize the flow of energy, materials, or cost through various processes. However, there are drawbacks to this approach that must be addressed. In a Sankey diagram, each flow is represented by an arrow possessing a width proportional to the magnitude of the flow it represents. The diagrams show input flows, how energy is converted and into what form, and also output flows. As per the first law of thermodynamics, the total energy output is equivalent to the total energy input, so any energy that is not transferred to another process is considered to be wasted. These waste flows are depicted in Sankey diagrams and make it straightforward to associate energy sources, sinks and waste flows. Unfortunately, Sankey diagrams do not convey all information required to support practical decision making for redirecting individual energy flows. Based only on a Sankey diagram, it may become evident that a significant flow of waste heat is of the appropriate grade (temperature) and volume to meet an on-site heat demand currently being met with paid-for, possibly carbon intensive fuel. However without augmenting the Sankey diagram with 3D spatial, true geometric analysis, the practicalities of the concept or idea may not be fully appreciated. Another issue with a Sankey diagram is that the magnitude of the energy flowing between processes may have temporal fluctuation or variability on different timescales (diurnal, seasonal, interannual). Currently, Sankey diagrams only provide a static picture of energy conversion and consumption, so that, for example, 4 separate diagrams could have to be prepared for each season. A new energy flow visualization technique which we have called Sankey Trees has been developed. Process locations are defined within a 3D model of the site being studied, and the magnitude of the flow between each pair of processes considered is replaced with a time series. Branches of sustained and diminishing flows are represented through variation of the geometric properties of the branches of the trees. These branches are animated to indicate the direction of flow, and branch joints are used to indicate that a process is transporting one form of energy to multiple processes.

Pressure leaching of a bulk flotation concentrate prepared from a complex Cu-Pb-Zn sulphide ore was carried out at 150 and 190¦C under 1050 kPa oxygen overpressure in 1 L and 4 L titanium autoclaves to extract zinc, and to obtain residues for smelting tests and leach liquors for purification and recovery of the zinc by electrowinning. Dissolution of 95% of the zinc was achieved at both temperatures. Copper and iron dissolution and the degree of oxidation of the sulphide sulphur to elemental sulphur or sulphate depended on the temperature of the leach. At 190¦C, a jarosite (a basic iron sulphate) was the major iron-containing material in a residue that contained 17% total sulphur. Its formation was associated with dissolution of 18% of the iron. At 150¦C, oxidation of the sulphide sulphur and dissolution of the iron were significantly less. Only 7% of the iron was dissolved and a residue containing 25% total sulphur, present as a lead jarosite, lead sulphate, and elemental sulphur, was obtained. The formation of small pellets of unreacted sulphides coated with elemental sulphur caused problems during the leaching at 150¦C, and also during scale-up from the 1 L to the 4 L autoclave at 190¦C. At 150¦C the concentrate required two stages of leaching to achieve dissolution of over 90% of the zinc. These problems are discussed.
