Fume events in coalmines are typically associated with wet conditions, soft ground and deep holes. An ACARP research project used laboratory and field testing combined with literature reviews, numerical models and field investigations to characterise the influence of these conditions on the propensity for fume. This paper highlights the results for soft ground and wet conditions and proposes a proactive fume mitigation methodology. A simple numerical model is used to show how fume arises in soft rock that yields more under the loading of high-pressure, water-resistant explosive blends than for ANFO. The blends cool more rapidly after detonation into the lower temperature zone favourable for NO2 production. Low-pressure, high detonation temperature explosives are loaded or charged into soft ground. Water resistance must be considered because soft, faulted and fractured ground can lead to fume from degradation by water flow and non-ideal detonation of product in cracks.A suite of tests were developed to quantify ANFO and emulsion blend performance over time that can be carried out in a mobile laboratory on-site. Index tests such as viscosity measurement and water resistance in beakers are proposed to quantify long-term product performance because small components, such as surfactant, prill impurities and prill fines, contribute to inconsistent product performance. Water ingress experiments and detonation tests aligned with field investigations identified and characterised the role of groundwater in damaging ANFO and causing fume.Fume risk management is achieved using a proposed proactive fume mitigation methodology to characterise influences such as seasonal rain variation, groundwater flow hydrogeology, rock mass strength and structure well ahead of blast design. [A cost/benefit analysis was conducted by comparing the industry cost to protective structures on low-coal face equipment with the benefits paid for injuries/fatalities considered preventable by the use of these structures. Th industry costs were based on estimates by OEM's and rebuild shops for install protective structures on new and rebuilt face equipment. The accident benefit was based on evaluations performed by the USBM Accident Cost Indicator Model. Industry wide population data were developed on low-coal face equipment and injuries/ fatalities preventable with protective structures. The results of the analysis are to be used as a tool by USBM in determining the feasibility of continuing development of cab and canopy technology for low-coal equipment.]

"Conventional tunneling as defined by ITA WG19 is also known as the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) or Sequential Excavation Method (SEM) was transformed in the US to deal with challenging tunneling conditions as an alternative to the more traditional tunneling methods. It is being used more often in urban areas, under difficult ground and ground water conditions, and with limited cover. Often the tunnel is of a large and non-uniform cross section in soft soils or weak rocks. The intent of using this tunneling method is to minimize impact on traffic and utilities and reduce disruption of everyday life of people and businesses. To meet these challenges, the industry developed technical approaches and implementation techniques and established sophisticated contractual relationships and collaboration in the field among various parties for successful implementation. This paper examines the development of conventional tunneling (NATM/SEM) in the US to deal with these challenges using recent examples such as Russia Wharf in Boston, Northern Boulevard Crossing, in New York, and Chinatown Station in San Francisco. INTRODUCTION / HISTORY Conventional tunneling or NATM/SEM is a concept that is based on the understanding of the behavior of the ground as it reacts to the creation of an underground opening. In its classic form the SEM/NATM attempts to mobilize the self-supporting capability of the ground to an optimum thus achieving economy in ground support. Initially formulated for application in rock tunneling in the early 1960’s, NATM has found application in soft ground in urban tunneling in the late 60’s and has since then enjoyed a broad, international utilization in both rural and urban settings. In the US the NATM/SEM tunneling method has been used successfully to address challenging tunneling conditions in urban areas. A large number of tunnels have been built around the world using a construction approach which was loosely termed NATM. During the years of discussions and the application of NATM a variety of terms have been used for the same construction approach. These terms were primarily aimed at describing the construction approach rather than the region of its reported origin."

Introduction On the banks of the Columbia River, about halfway between Seattle and Spokane, sits Wenatchee, WA. It calls itself "the apple capital of the world." And it has a gold mining history that dates back to the 1880s. It was just outside Wenatchee - three blocks outside, to be exact-that Asamera recently dedicated its $60 million Cannon underground gold mine. At full production, it is estimated the Cannon mine will yield between 5 and 5.6 t/a (160,000 and 180,000 oz per year) of gold. That would make Cannon the largest North American underground gold mine to be brought into production this year. Cannon should also be among the top 10 of all North American gold producers. Asamera officials project Cannon's operating costs at about $4.8019 ($150 per oz). At that rate, the mine should also be one of the lower cost and most profitable gold mining operations in North America. One reason for low operating costs is low electric power costs. The Cannon operation will be paying about 2.5 cents per kWh for hydroelectric power supplied by the Bonneville Power Authority. Proven and probable ore reserves at Cannon are in excess of 4.7 Mt (5.2 million st). Reserve grades average 7.29 g/t (0.21 oz per st) of gold in three ore zones, in order of discovery - B, B West, and B North. The ore bodies could have been mined by open-pit methods. But underground mining was chosen for environmental reasons. In addition, the rich B North ore body extends beneath a nearby horse stable and arena. The Cannon mine area comprises some 20 km2 (5000 acres) in Chelan County. The mine site is located at the 305 m (1000 ft) elevation in Dry Gulch at the base of the Cascade Mountains. The initial estimate of mine life for the Cannon operation is eight years, depending on gold prices. But Asamera officials believe the Wenatchee area has excellent potential for future gold discoveries. Asamera, Inc. of Calgary, Alberta, owns 51% of the Cannon property, through its wholly-owned Asamera Minerals (US). Breakwater Resources Ltd. of Vancouver, British Columbia owns 49% of the operation. The Cannon mine is named in honor of longtime Asamera, Inc. executive and current company director, geologist Donald G. Can¬non. It was he who first brought the Wenatchee property to Asamera's attention and urged the company to pursue it. Asamera is a major explorer and producer of oil and gas. Its Cannon operation is the largest and most significant to date in its mining division, according to Rob¬ert G. Welty. He is Asamera's chairman and chief executive officer. It should be noted there was an element of serendipity involved in Cannon's development. The development program be¬gan when geologist Cannon visited the Wenatchee area. He was visit¬ing old mining districts. He liked what he saw. The Cannon property was eventually optioned for ex¬ploration, including a modest drilling program.

In-pit crusher location selection has had an important role recently, since increasing diesel prices. One way of reducing the haulage costs is to shorten the truck haulage distance by bringing the truck dump point into the pit. This study covers the work done on the optimum crusher location definition for a company that produces aggregate near Izmir, a city of Turkey located in the west. This paper will discuss the effects of pit geometry and mine access requirements on optimum crusher location selection that are mainly based on the establishment of minimum haulage distance. The method will be introduced first and then the computer algorithm developed for this study will be discussed later in the paper. By March 2001, shrinking global markets, reduced consumer spending and declines in domestic manufacturing and industrial output ended the longest economic expansion in US history and pushed the nation’s economy into its first recession in a decade. Aggravated by the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, the recession led to large reductions in the domestic production of processed mineral materials. Some of the most significant production declines in the US metals industry were registered by aluminum, copper and steel producers. They faced strong foreign competition, higher energy costs and lower prices for their products. However, homebuilding and other domestic construction sectors — major users of nonmetallic mineral products such as cement, brick, glass and stone — remained strong enough to help raise the output of industrial mineral materials slightly above previous year levels. A strong US dollar continued to weaken the competitive stance of US metal and nonmetallic mineral materials companies alike against foreign producers in markets at home and abroad.

Profit, product quality, speed of operations, reliability, operator confidence, safety and environmental improvements have all been enhanced as a result of the recently completed maintenance, renovation and construction program at Crown Central Petroleum Corporation?s (Crown?s) coke calcining unit at its Pasadena, Texas refinery. (Figure 1) BACKGROUND The calcining unit was built in 1969 - 1970 and has been operated continuously. Approximately 400 to 500 TPD of high quality metallurgical grade coke is manufactured, stored, and shipped to consumers. About 1/2 of the feed stock to the calciner is manufactured in Crown's coking unit and the remainder is received, via barges, from various sources. The green coke is off loaded from the barges with a conventional grab crane that discharges into a small travelling hopper over a conveyor belt that feeds a radial stacker, which forms a stockpile on the ground. The green coke, from the coking unit at the refinery, is moved to the calcining unit with front end loaders. Reclaiming from the stockpiles is also done with front end loaders. The coke is primarily handled by covered conveyor belts. The finished product is stored in steel silos and can be shipped via railroad cars, but the majority of it is shipped out in ocean going bulk carriers. Maintenance work in the calcining unit is performed by Crown's refinery maintenance department on an as needed, on call basis.

A company must have an organized approach to effectively sort through the profusion of available software and hardware and find the programs and equipment which fit defined needs. The selection process must build a complete compatible system which includes hardware and software. The methodology presented in this paper helps identify some of the more important considerations. The steps needed for an organized approach to software/hardware selection are: •All involved staff should contribute to an assessment of current computer capabilities and projection of future needs. •Alternatives are analyzed to determine what software and hardware is available and how selections may possibly be merged into the existing computer system. The evaluation process focuses on details of program capability and hardware compatibility. Analysis must be done to determine how closely individual programs fit the established requirements. The final decision is often a balance of needs between program capabilities and hardware availability. Any programs selected must be able to run on existing and newly purchased hardware. Any additional hardware selected must be capable of meshing with the available computer system.

The method of feeding blast-furnaces to be described below is simply the application of well-known principles, and an attempt to carry that application to its logical conclusion. It does not involve radical changes in equipment, nor does it require unusual skill on the part of the furnaceman. In fact, much of its value lies in its very simplicity. Before giving details of the method it will be well to consider briefly the conditions under which it was used at the Nickelton plant of the British America Nickel Corporation, in the Sudbury district, before that plant closed down. The Sudbury nickel ore consists chiefly of pentlandite, chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite in a gangue of norite or greenstone. The proportions of sulphide and gangue vary widely in different mines, the former constituting about 45 per cent of the total in the British America sorted ore. The gangue is fairly uniform in analysis, carrying about 55 per cent Si02, 18 per cent A120 3, 13 per cent FeO and smaller quantities of CaO, MgO, Na20 and K20. The ore has been frequently described as refractory, a word which seems suitable when one considers the many unsuccessful attempts to smelt it pyritically, as well as the high percentage of coke normally used at all the plants in the district.

In contrast with previously published models for the carbon-in-pulp (CIP) process, the model proposed in this paper incorporates film transfer, intraparticle diffusion, simultaneous leaching, preg-robbing, the loading of multicomponent species, and the effects of fouling and changing cyanide levels. The rationale behind this comprehensive model is that changes in fouling and competitive adsorption along a CIP cascade affect the profiles of gold loading. As it is impossible to quantify all these non-ideal factors, a method is proposed whereby an imaginary species is postulated so as to combine all the competitive effects. A plant survey at the Telfer mine has shown that the mass loss due to a gravimetric analysis of the fouled carbon could be used directly to quantify this competitive effect. The degradation and consumption of cyanide along the Telfer CIP cascade enhance the loading of copper on to the carbon, which should be taken into account when modelling the gold profiles. It appeared that the effect of cyanide itself on the loading of gold was negligible compared with its effect on the copper. Evidently much more research is required on this topic in order to optimise CIP operations exposed to constantly changing conditions.

THE legislatures of New York and New Jersey, determined in 1919 that a vehicular tunnel should be built under the Hudson River. On July 1, 1919, an engineering staff was organized with the late Clifford M. Holland as chief engineer, and this staff was given a number of problems to solve, such as location, size, type of tunnel, method of construction, method of ventilation and cost. After a period of preliminary investigations and studies it was decided to build the tunnel at Canal St., New York, connecting 12th St., Jersey City. This is the center of the heaviest traffic across the Hudson River. It was also decided to build two tunnels-one for west-bound traffic and one for east-bound traffic-the tunnels to be of cast iron, built up of segments and bolted together, each tunnel to have a roadway 20 ft. wide and a clear heat room of 13 ft., 6 in. This is to provide for two lines of vehicles in each direction. The tunnels have an exterior diameter of 29 ft., 6 in. The interior lining is of concrete, the sidewalls tiled with a vitreous white tile and the roadways paved with granite block. The entrances and exits at both ends are separated by two blocks so as to reduce traffic congestion. BASIS OF VENTILATION It was recognized very early that one of the most important problems confronting the engineers was a proper ventilation system. It was estimated that each tunnel as planned would have a traffic capacity of 1900 vehicles per hr. The tunnels are 8500 ft. long between portals, and it was considered that the ventilation should be based on all of these vehicles being operated by gasoline engines. That presented a problem in ventilation unlike any other either in magnitude or character.

Early in my career, while giving a presentation on shield design for longwall mining at one of the International Conferences on Ground Control in Mining, the late Jim Scott told me that I was finally getting it, because ?I was starting to think like a rock!? Although I didn?t realize it at the time, those few words changed my career forever. At the start of my career, I did a lot of laboratory testing, taking advantage of the unique capabilities of the Mine Roof Simulator to study the performance and design characteristics of longwall shields. I had a pretty good handle on what made shields work and what made them fail, but I was still struggling with how and why they develop their in-service loads and what they were actually controlling as opposed to being passive bystanders in a world beyond their control. It became clear to me that the simplistic models of dead weight loading could not explain the behavior I saw and measured underground. The problem did not go away when I started studying standing support systems. Again, I learned much about the strength, stiffness, and stability of these supports and helped the industry develop several new support products that attempted to provide more efficient support designs. But here, too, the simplistic models of dead weight loading did not seem to fit for me. That?s when I began to incorporate the ground reaction concept as a way of integrating the support response and the ground behavior into a cohesive design methodology. The concept has its limitations, no doubt, but I believe some form of it will be the future of not only designing supports but also, in the broader sense, enhancing the engineering aspects of ground control. The paper presented at the International Conference on Ground Control last year by Esterhuizen (2010) on pillar behavior is evidence of this. Think like a rock. Jim Scott was right. It takes two to dance. You can?t dance alone and you will never understand ground control by thinking like a support! ?Dumb as a box of rocks?? I don?t think so. The answer lies in the rocks!

AN INCENTIVE or bonus system of payment is commonly used for mine labour. The incentive rates are usually based on the variable units of production, such as dollars per foot of drift advance or cents per ton of ore broken. Portions of the work that must be done to achieve the units of ?production are independent of the production unit and tend to be fixed work for the shift or for the job, irrespective of the production achieved. This fixed work has considerable influence on the equity of incentive rates. The effect of fixed work is to accelerate the loosening or tightening of rates if the production task is over-achieved or under-achieved, and of increasing the loosening of rates loosely set and the tightening of rates tightly set. This gearing of mine contract rates is the reason why changes in conditions, materials, equipment, or methods will change the incentive earnings to a greater degree than would normally be expected. Obviously, therefore, care should be taken in the setting of the task for incentive rates as the gearing makes an inequitable rate even more inequitable.

"Underground coal mines use mechanical bolts in addition to other types of bolts to control the rib deformation and to stabilize the yielded coal ribs. Limited research has been conducted to understand the performance of the mechanical bolts in coal ribs. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted this work to understand the loading characteristics of mechanical bolts (stiffness and capacity) installed in coal ribs at five underground coal mines. Standard pull-out tests were performed in this study to define the loading characteristics of mechanical rib bolts. Different installation torques were applied to the tested bolts based on the strength of the coal seam. A typical tri-linear load-deformation response for mechanical bolts was obtained from these tests. It was found that the anchorage capacity depends mainly on the coal strength. Guidelines for modeling mechanical bolts have been developed using the tri-linear load-deformation response. The outcome of this research provides essential data for rib support design.INTRODUCTIONThe design of rib bolting in U.S. coal mines is based on a trial-and-error process, which is insufficient to eliminate injuries and fatalities caused by rib falls. In the last 10 years, rib failures have resulted in 17 fatalities, representing 52% of the ground-fall fatalities in underground coal mines in the United States (MSHA, 2018). Recently, NIOSH researchers surveyed 90 sites in 14 underground coal mines in the Eastern United States and found that 11 mines are bolting coal ribs, with 4 of those mines using the conventional mechanical bolts and the others using fully-grouted bolts. NIOSH researchers are developing an engineering design procedure for rib support. Pull-out test programs for mechanical and grouted rib bolts were conducted to understand the rib control mechanisms of rib bolts. Only the test results of mechanical bolts are presented in this paper.Mechanical bolt (or point-anchored bolt) is a tensioned bolt anchored down the borehole with a mechanical expansion shell or a resin-grouted medium (Peng and Tang, 1984). The mechanical anchor bolt consists of a plug, a shell anchor, a headed bar with the top end threaded, a bearing plate, a hardened washer, and occasionally a friction-reducing washer. The shell anchor can be either standard or bail type (Figure 1). The standard type shell is held in place by a nut, while the bail anchor uses a strap to hold the shell in place (Peng, 2008). The diameter of the bar is generally 16 mm (? in) for the #5 bolt or 19 mm (6/8 in) for the #6 bolt. The diameter of the hole that the bolt is inserted into must be carefully controlled, since an oversized hole can result in poor anchorage (Moss, 1971). The anchorage is obtained by applying torque to the bolt head, which in turn pulls the plug down in the shell and expands the serrated leaves against the sides of the hole-wall. In the resin-grouted anchor, the resin replaces the mechanical expansion shell at the end of the hole. The anchorage is achieved by bonding between the resin, bolt, and the hole-wall."

The froth zone in a flotation cell is recognised as a region which contributes to the overall flotation performance. Froth recovery is a measure of the efficiency with which the froth phase delivers particles arriving at the pulp-froth interface to the concentrate. Poor froth recovery in scavenger stages is generally attributed to poor froth stability. The key indicators of froth performance: froth recovery, entrainment and water recovery were measured in an OK3 pilot cell installed at a zinc concentrator in Australia and supplied with scavenger feed. Cell hydrodynamic and pulp chemical conditions during the operation of the cell were also measured as well as bubble growth across the froth phase. The objective of the work was to assess the impact of a number of commercial frothers on the froth performance in the OK3 cell and assess the suitability of using bubble growth as an indicator of froth stability.

The NASA Lewis Research Center, under U.S. Bureau of Mines program direction, performed an assessment of alternative mobile power sources for mining applications. A wide variety of heat engines and energy systems was initially examined to ascertain which could be considered as potential alternatives to presently used power systems. The present mobile power systems are electrical trailing cable, electrical battery, and diesel - with diesel being largely limited in the United States to noncoal mines. Each candidate power source was evaluated in terms, of the following requirements: (1) Ability to achieve the duty cycle (2) Ability to meet Government regulations (MSHA certification) (3) Availability (production readiness) (4) Market availability (5) Packaging capability An initial screening reduced the list of candidates to the following: (1) Diesel (2) Stirling (3) Gas turbine (4) Rankine (steam) (5) Advanced electric (batteries) (6) Mechanical energy storage (flywheel) (7) Use of hydrogen evolved from metal hydrides This list of candidates was divided into two classes of alternative power sources for mining applications - heat engines and energy storage systems. Unit Rig & Equipment Co., manufacturer of Lectra Haul trucks, is continually studying methods of reducing the operating costs of large haulage trucks. Reduction of haulage system operating costs is an important goal that equipment operators and equipment manufacturers constantly try to improve on. One of the most variable and important factors affecting operating costs is actual truck operating practices. An examination was centered on methods to optimize truck utilization. It was found that a very effective method of accomplishing this goal would be an automatic truck control (ATC) system to automatically control a fleet of haulage trucks in a predetermined pattern. Economic studies were conducted which showed a very favorable reduction in mine operating costs by use of an ATC system. In 1970, Unit Rig & Equipment Co., in conjunction with SAAB-SCANIA began preliminary development of adapting, for truck use, a proven automated control system, previously used for train systems, small trucks, and military target vehicles. In 1974, the first prototype system was installed on a Lectra Haul M-100 and tested extensively at Unit Rig's test track in Tulsa, OK. This truck and system were then displayed publicly at the 1974 convention in Las Vegas. In 1976, the system was redesigned for production to maximize reliability, ease maintenance, and to accommodate future control and-status reporting developments proposed for haulage trucks. The new design equipment was manufactured, and a full system test will be conducted in an actual open-pit mine for an extended period to evaluate reliability, compile economic data, and obtain application information to evaluate complete mine haulage system conversions to ATC. System Description The ATC system is designed to provide automatic control of all the vehicle functions normally accomplished by the vehicle operator. The basic system consists of the on-board control equipment and the wayside control equipment. The on-board equipment receives commands from the wayside equipment and controls all the truck functions. In addition, on-board sensors monitor all critical truck functions and provide instructions to the truck and system to assure safe operation. The wayside equipment consists of a buried guidewire, block control units and a central controller which provides predetermined signals to the on-board equipment for speed control, steering, and for auxiliary functions (dumping, horn, etc.) through the guidewire located in the truck's path. The wayside equipment also controls vehicle separation, system status, and provides truck location to a central display panel. The central control panel can vary the speed level signals over any segment and can also command an emergency stop to halt all the units. [Fig. 1] illustrates a typical ATC installation. If ATC is used in operations which require flexibility and mobility at the end of the ATC guidance network, the trucks can then be operated by either radio remote control or manually to complete their assigned functions.

Competition among OEM and aftermarket vendors increases dramatically each year as a result of mergers and acquisitions, and especially technology advancements in the mining industry. Adding value to mine operations by delivering technical value and differentiation is becoming more subtle and more difficult to accomplish. Because of this, identifying and protecting intellectual property has become more important to the product development, engineering and marketing/sales continuum than it had been in the past. How companies protect intellectual property and determine the value of those assets is critical to the sustainability and differentiation of technology providers in the mining industry.

WYSOR.-In the first installation we were afraid to put in the insulation throughout the hot-blast main for the reasons mentioned in the paper, but we used the insulating brick in two 8-ft. sections in straight lengths of our hot-blast mains. Owing to the high conductivity of the steel shell, the temperatures which were taken on the outside were not representative of the two temperatures resulting from heat flow through the insulating brick.
