In this study, a fuzzy logic self-tuning PID controller based on an improved disturbance observer is designed for control of the ball mill grinding circuit. The ball mill grinding circuit has vast applications in the mining, metallurgy, chemistry, pharmacy, and research laboratories; however, this system has some challenges. The grinding circuit is a multivariable system in which the high interaction between loops, the variation of the system parameters with time, and time delay are some of the problems that pose a challenge. Since the controller parameters are determined offline in classic PID control, these gains are unchangeable and cannot overcome the mentioned challenges in this system. Hence, a fuzzy logic self-tuning PID controller, which is a combination of fuzzy logic and a conventional PID controller, is proposed to control the grinding system, especially in the presence of model mismatch and disturbances. In addition, in order to solve the system challenges, a multivariable control approach based on an improved disturbance observer is proposed to suppress the effects of the disturbances. The most important feature of the algorithm proposed in this paper as the combination of fuzzy logic self-tuning PID and improved disturbance observer is its ability to eliminate system interaction, attenuate internal and external disturbances, and compensate the effect of system uncertainty on the performance of the ball mill grinding circuit. Simulation results in the cases of the set-point change in particle size and circulating load in the presence of model mismatch and external disturbances confirmed the controller performance compared to other controllers.

INTRODUCTION In this paper the author will attempt to bridge from the paper work of design and engineering to the reality of implementation. Certain facets of construction are constant to a successful project, no matter the level of technical complexity. Basic to timely, low cost construction are the people assigned to the project. Construction is not accomplished by robots, computers, or speeches; but rather by people. People do however require the avail- ability of equipment and communications to properly complete the work. ORGANIZATION Good organization is the basic requirement of a well implemented construction project. For this paper the author will suggest an organization chart as well as an activity listing that together support the construction activities. There is little difference in the activities or functions needed to construct a small plant or a large one. It is a matter of how much time an individual has to spend on an activity that determines the structure of an organization. The difference between a large and small plant construction job is often described as the multiple hat versus the single hat philosophy. Sonic travel time logging of exploration boreholes is routinely used in Australia to obtain estimates of coal mine roof rock strength. Because sonic velocity logs are relatively inexpensive and easy to obtain during exploration, the technique has provided Australian underground coal mines with an abundance of strength data for use in all aspects of ground control design. However, the technique depends upon reliable correlations between the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and the sonic velocity. This paper describes research recently conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) aimed at developing a correlation for use by the U.S. mining industry. At three coreholes in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and southern West Virginia, sonic velocity logs were compared with point load tests for a broad range of coal measure rock types. For the entire data set, the relationship between UCS and sonic travel time is expressed by the following equation, where UCS is in psi and t is the travel time of the P-wave in microsec/ft. UCS = 468,000 x e-0.054t (1) The r-squared value for this equation is 0.87, indicating that a strong correlation between sonic travel time and UCS can be achieved with this technique. The paper also addresses the steps that are necessary to ensure that high-quality sonic logs are obtained for use in estimating UCS.

The Doan Valley Storage Tunnel Project in Cleveland Ohio was constructed to control Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs). It is a complex system of three tunnels ranging from 8.5 to 18 feet in diameter with a total length of about 2.3 miles that was put into operation in mid-2021. The project lies within and below the cultural, educational, and medical hub of Cleveland, which presented unique design and construction challenges. This paper provides a case history of the design and construction, with particular attention given to lessons learned in devising a large tunnel system that can carry both dry and wet weather flows constructed in rock with limited cover, within a flood plain area and vibrant urban center

The rush for alternate iron-units in the last few years spurred a true outbreak of new alternate iron units projects many of them incorporating new process in what can be classified as the.most fruitful and innovative technology outburst, in the steel industry, in decades In a recent paper we focused on what would be, in our opinion, the ultimate targets of the use of alternate iron-units by mini-mills: 1. to improve quality, 2. to reduce cost, 3. to increase plant productivity, and 4. to improve `supplyability'. With these objectives in mind liquid hot-metal, among all possible scrap substitutes, has been proven to be by far the best. This conclusion stems from many different authors who have reviewed the `value in use' of hot-metal against other alternate iron units and measured its impact on steel-shop productivity and cost (Figure 1).

Coal is the most abundant and most economical source of energy in the United States, however, combustion of coal results in release of pollutants to the environment. The release of sulfur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen during combustion of coal contributes to the deterioration of the environment. Energy independence in the United States must include the increased use of coal reserves. Increased reliance on coal for energy will dictate the necessity for making coal a cleaner fuel. New technologies employing a variety of techniques from harsh chemical treatment to mild physical separations to clean coal are rapidly becoming available. Success for any coal cleaning process is in economics which translate into efficient removal of sulfur with high recovery of combustibles as well as low capital and operating costs for the process. Conventional coal cleaning processes remove water soluble sulfates and a portion of the pyritic sulfur and ash from coals. Removal of additional sulfur from coals requires more advanced coal cleaning techniques. Coal contains many organic sulfur forms which are the most difficult of the sulfur types to remove from coal. The heteroaromatic sulfur species, such as the comlex thiophenes, are the most commonly found organic sulfur forms. These sulfur forms are resistant to chemical attack and are considered to be refractory compounds. Atlantic Research Corporation has developed an "unique" microorganism, CB1 (Coal Bug 1), capable of oxidizing thiophenic sulfur in coal to form water soluble sulfates.

As a part of its overall program of coal carbonization, the Bureau of Mines is studying the coking properties of coals that may be used for metallurgical purposes. The objectives of this study were given in detail in a previous report The inherent suitability of coal for metallurgical purposes depends primarily on (1) chemical composition, (2) preparation characteristics, and (3) carbonization behavior. The first two factors, Be well as the amount of available reserves, are considered in selecting coals for carbonization tests. The selection of coal beds in Harlan County, Ky., for coking tests was based, in part, on recent studies of coal reserves by Wallace,3/ who estimated the recoverable reserves in beds 28 inches or more thick, in tons, as follows:

This paper reports the distribution of sulphur between iron and titanium in Fe-Ti-S alloys and in Fe-Ti-C-S alloys. The compound TiS was found, which exists as a separate phase at temperatures below 1200°C. Titanium in steels reacts with sulphur in preference to carbon. THE general relationship between sulphides and oxides suggests that titanium should form a sulphide having properties similar to those of titanium oxide. Specifically, titanium should form a sulphide having a high melting point, indicating a stable compound of low solubility in iron. In order for titanium to function as a desulphurizer or sulphur-fixing agent, it must form a stable sulphide. In order for titanium to be useful in steels as a sulphur-fixing agent, it must react with sulphur in preference to carbon; and to prevent red shortness, the sulphide formed must have solubility characteristics such that grain-boundary precipitation of a low melting phase be prevented. The terms desulphurizer and sulphur-fixing agent when used in this paper mean that titanium effectively ties up the sulphur as a stable sulphide of titanium and prevents the formation of FeS. The partition of sulphur between iron and titanium was studied first in a series of Fe-Ti-S alloys with carbon absent, and then in similar alloys with carbon present. It has been established1 a that titanium forms in Fe-Ti-S alloys a sulphide of undetermined composition which can be identified microscopically, and that the titanium-sulphur compound does not respond to sulphur printing. It has been suggested" that titanium acts as a sulphur-fixing agent, although little proof has been given. A report% f The Advisory Committee on Metals and Minerals summarizes the existing knowledge concerning substitutes for manganese in steels. Distribution of Sulphur Between lron and Titanium with Carbon Absent The alloys for this investigation were made by -melting Armco iron, metallic titanium, and iron sulphide in alundum crucibles in an induction furnace. The titanium was added after the other ingredients had melted. In these alloys it is recognized that some TiO, is present, since the melts were made in the air and since no other deoxidizing agent was used; therefore, some of the titanium was not available for union with sulphur. Thirteen ingots were made. Ingots 2 to 8 were cast in baked-sand molds; ingots 12 and 13 were cast in metal molds; and ingot 9 was allowed to cool in the crucible in which it was melted. All ingots were annealed at 900°C for 3 hr and were cooled slowly in the furnace. Subsequent information indicates that this anneal had no effect upon the titanium sulphide particle size, since the sulphide does not go into solution at this temperature. The ingots as-cast were approximately 8 in. long and % in. diam. The compositions of the eight ingots and the results of the partition of sulphur are recorded in Table I. Total titanium and total sulphur were determined by standard gravimetric methods. Sulphur, as iron sulphide, was determined by the evolution method. Boiling HC1 (1:4) liberates the sulphur from iron sulphide, but leaves the titanium sulphide practically undecomposed. A complete separation of titanium sulphide and iron sulphide cannot be made by digesting these compounds in dilute HC1 since titanium sulphide was found to dissolve slowly. All too often engineers and project teams focus on building æthingsÆ, and they tend to see the key goals as meeting the project cost and schedule targets. We frequently compound the problem by unknowingly rewarding engineers for building bigger, more complex, more æbullet proofÆ and hence more costly æthingsÆ. Unfortunately the end result all too often ends up being a disappointment in terms of business performance. The term æshareholder valueÆ may never have entered the discussions during the development process. This paper deals with the fundamental issues, which tend to pre-dispose new developments to success or to failure. As project management concepts are not particularly complex, it begs the question why is it that the failure rate of new developments is so high? It is argued that the answer lies more in people behaviour issues than in project management tools and processes.

In 2003, a high-temperature pressure leaching circuit to treat copper sulfide concentrates was commissioned at the copper/molybdenum operation at Bagdad, AZ. In late 2007, a medium-temperature pressure leaching circuit was commissioned at the Morenci mine in Arizona. The Morenci circuit was shut down in mid-2008, following a fire in the autoclave circuit. The onset of the global financial crisis in late 2008 resulted in significant changes to the operating profile in the Southwestern United States with respect to concentrates production, concentrates treatment, acid production and acid consumption. As a result of these changes, the Morenci concentrator was shut down, and the pressure leaching circuit remained offline. In late 2014, the increasing acid requirements in the Southwestern United States prompted a reevaluation of the Morenci concentrate leaching facilities. As a result, the pressure leaching circuit was restarted in high-temperature (200 °C) mode in May 2015 and has operated successfully for three years since recommissioning. This paper describes the current pressure leaching circuit configuration and the factors leading to the successful application of copper sulfide concentrate leaching at this location.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research on cable bolt ground supports to assess their material and support properties, to provide design criteria for using cable bolt supports as roof control systems under various types of underground mining conditions, and to provide a mathematical model of cable bolt support systems. Part 1 describes laboratory studies of the support properties of cable bolts made of conventional steel cables and provides recommendations on such topics as the use of thick grouts, selection of breather tubes, and reduction of water bleeding in cement-based grouts. The studies evaluated both single and double cables; effects of different embedment lengths, water-cement ratios, and grout curing temperatures on support strength; effects of use or nonuse of breather tubes; pumpability and water-bleeding properties of grouts; and the strength properties of sand-cement grouts. Part 2 will cover the strength characteristics of birdcage cable bolt supports, epoxy-coated cables, and cables with steel buttons attached.

Discussion of the paper of L. O. HOWARD, presented at the Salt Lake meeting, August, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 91, July, 1914, pp. 1785 to 1790. E. P. MATHEWSON, Anaconda, Mont.-I would like to add a few words of praise on Mr. Howard's work at the Old Dominion. Mr. Howard has given this particular converter shell his personal attention, and the results are shown in the figures given. Similar converter shells, a little different in shape and of about the same size, have been tried in many plants throughout the United States. The results have been highly satisfactory, but there is no shell of the size of the one described by Mr. Howard that has given anything like the results that Mr. Howard's shell has given. I know of larger shells that have given very good service, and are still in operation, and require very little repair. The main thing about the whole process of using the basic lining in copper converting is to keep the temperature within reasonable bounds, particularly not to get the furnace too hot. If it is overheated a little bit, for say half an hour, an entire lining may be ruined. It is very easy to keep the temperature regulated 'if the mass is large. If you have a large mass in your converter you can easily prevent it from getting over-heated, and that is the big argument in favor of the extra large converters. Of course, there is a limit to what a plant can turn out in the way of matte. Very few plants can supply matte sufficient to keep a converter of 20 ft. in diameter in operation constantly, but the 20-ft. converter is very much superior to the 12-ft. converter in easy handling and absolute control of the temperature. I think Mr. Howard is to be congratulated on the excellent showing he has made.

"Comminution represents a significant part of mineral processing plant operating costs. Yet, autogenous (AG) or semi-autogenous grinding mills (SAG) are difficult to control because of disturbances like feed size distribution and rock hardness. AMIRA, within project GeMIII, developed a comminution index from laboratory crusher data. The index correlated with the Bond ball mill work index and with the A×b parameter. The present work extends the use of crusher data as a grindability indicator to real-time industrial applications. The aim is to improve comminution operation using online hardness estimation. Because the operational work index is proportional to the ore work index, rock hardness variations can be estimated from the feed and product size distributions, the throughput, and the power draw of a crusher. Real-time estimation of rock hardness can help understand the dynamic behavior of AG and SAG mills. Multivariate time series were analyzed to understand the impact of hardness on a SAG operation. Results showed that the estimated hardness influences the SAG operation and its throughput. Moreover, non-linear dimension reduction was used to ease the process visualisation and search for potential control strategies. In the future, online hardness measurements should also impact the understanding of comminution circuits and improve their operation.INTRODUCTIONThe variability in hardness, and the feed size distribution, are two of the main disturbances affecting comminution circuits (Sbarbaro & del Vilar, 2010). Size distribution can be measured by imagebased granulometry systems such as WipFrag (Maerz, Palangio, & Franklin, 1996), or by 3D vision systems when the fines are difficult to discriminate by 2D segmentation (Faucher, Makni, Gagnon, Lavoie, & Roberge, 2015).There are few examples of online hardness measurements. One example was the work of Casali et al. (2001) who developed a hardness indicator. The ore grindability soft sensor used the fraction of each lithological class in the ore, as determined by image analysis, to predict the work index of the material. The model was developed using a moving window with a width of 12 months and trends were shown over many years with one data point per month."

During the decade of the 1970's, a new emphasis was placed on assuring a safe and healthful workplace for all American workers. Much of the basis for this national effort was federal legislation: the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 and the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 (amended from the 1969 Coal Mine Act). One of the agencies involved in this protection effort is the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). In fulfilling its mandates under the 1970 and 1977 Acts, NIOSH conducts research, experiments, and demonstrations to support and stimulate advancements in health and safety practices. Priorities for NIOSH research are established primarily through congressional mandates, requests from the Department of Labor, needs as defined by NIOSH researchers, and surveillance information. Emphasis is placed on research in the areas of toxicology, industrial hygiene, physical and chemical sciences, physiology, ergonomics, engineering, psychology (behavior and motivation), and epidemiology (industry-wide studies). The framework of the current Institute program to identify, evaluate, and control occupational hazards includes activities in surveillance, research, evaluation, and training. These activities are planned and evaluated through a system that coordinates the efforts of eight research and scientific divisions. Each division develops projects to address program areas that have been identified by NIOSH management as having highest priority. In surveillance programs, the objectives are to identify substances and agents found in a representative sample of workplaces and to collect and evaluate information on rates of disease and injury in occupational groups. Information is also collected on occupational safety and health programs implemented by industry. Estimates of worker exposures and the potential for adverse health effects are considered in setting priorities for further investigations. A related activity, which also serves to provide technical assistance to industry, is NIOSH's Health Hazard Evaluation program. On-site investigations of workplaces are made in response to worker, employer, or government agency requests. Both industrial hygiene and medical examinations are conducted, and the results contribute to identifying new problems and evaluating their significance which may have public health implications beyond the particular worksites that are investigated. Field and laboratory research projects are performed to meet several objectives: - Characterize the working environment by evaluating current and past exposure levels for workers who are included in epidemiological or medical investigations. - Develop epidemiological information to define the association between the substance or agent under investigation and the acute and chronic health effects on workers. - Determine through animal studies the parameters of an association between exposure and effect. - Investigate the etiology of disease. - Develop sampling and analytical instruments and techniques and demonstrate their application for measuring toxic materials in the workplace. - Formulate sampling strategies that will accurately and precisely indicate exposure levels. - Develop medical procedures to prevent disease and to detect the presence of disease and early indicators of disease. - Assess the technology for control of exposures, including engineering and administrative techniques, personal protective equipment, and work practices. Presently, the research program is focused on reproductive effects, neurotoxic effects, injury/trauma, lung disorders, cutaneous disorders, cardiovascular disorders, cancer, stress-related disorders, effects of physical agents, digestive disorders, and renal and other organic disorders. In studying these issues, priorities are determined by the seriousness of possible adverse health effects resulting from occupational exposures, the feasibility of studying existing records or obtaining new data, and the size of the population which is potentially affected. Where there is low level of suspicion concerning adverse health effects or where an occupational disease occurs in a variety of industrial environments, investigations are limited to gross analyses of health effects such as review of mortality patterns. In such studies, the industrial populations selected are those for which existing data resources can be utilized. Such data consists of records of occupational exposures or health status which have been maintained by the employer, the union, or Government agencies. Where a review of the available information suggests that serious health hazards exist and the existing data resources are inadequate for quantifying the relationship between the specific biological response and type and degree of exposure, prospective studies are initiated. Information derived from such research is essential for the development of sound criteria for control of industrial exposures to noxious agents. Other input to the criteria documentation process comes from searching and evaluating the literature. Criteria documents contain the recommendation of an environmental limit where information is available to support it, as well as the recommendation of work practice controls, medical evaluation, information for workers to recognize and avoid the hazard, and identification of specific research gaps. In some cases, during the criteria document preparation, gaps in knowledge are found which necessitate further research before an occupational standard can be recommended.

Mobile mining equipment presents only a small portion (ten per cent mining project costs but the selected technology will determine to a large extent the mining performance and mine profitability. The actual performance of the selected mobile equipment technology will rely on the support functions, infrastructure, user interface and user acceptance. Optimising the technology to match the circumstances is an increasingly important phase in a mine feasibility study. Smartly done feasibility studies include the possible future needs of changing or building-up of the selected technology. In massive mining applications the machinery faces quite different challenges than in selective or small-scale mining applications. In massive mining applications the efficient and continuous move of large amounts of material has led to the use of increasing degree of automation. This higher degree of automation in a mining application, on the other hand, will be best applied to a smooth and streamlined mining process and operation. Mining methods like block caving support automated operation. Automated mobile equipment needs supportive infrastructure, monitoring and information transfer systems as well as well established working procedures. Too often the user interface and human factor is disregarded during the consideration of automation. Through the available supplier programming tools it is possible to see how much the selected technology provides flexibility in changing production or economical situations, when major rebuilds or replacements are necessary, and view the effects of all these on the mine economy. When adequate technology is available from various sources, the difference becomes from preparing for the future, managing costs and combining the best layout with the most suitable technological solutions.

To maintain good condition of ventilation for both safety and economy, many regulators are installed in a network. In case the open state of a regulator is different from the set point, identification of a broken regulator and a countermeasure to recover airflow distribution in a network must be initiated as soon as possible. An experienced mining engineer can sense a deviation from ordinary airflow quantity. In this paper, a new system to monitor all the regulators in a network is introduced. The basic concept of the system is utilization of both human sensing of airflow rate and computer simulation to understand the macroscopic characteristics of a ventilation network. A fuzzy pattern distinction method is used to process human determination of airflow rate that may be ambiguous. The applicability of the system is demonstrated using the ventilation network of the Horonai coal mine, Japan. In particular, it is shown that the system can identify the regulator to be repaired from information supplied by workers relating to air- flow in a few sensor branches.

DURING the field season of 1938, the Ontario Department of Mines assigned a combined geological and geophysical survey patty to the investigation of the location, genesis, structural relationships, and economic possibilities of the hematite deposits at Steeprock lake. The investigation was carried out by detailed mapping of the rock exposures and a magneto-metric survey of the drift-covered portions of the area. This was supplemented during the winter of 1938-39 by further geophysical work conducted on the ice. Dr. A. A. Brant, of the Department of Physics, University of Toronto, was in charge of the geophysical work for the Department of Mines in the summer and for the Sterola Exploration Company in the winter. The writer supervised the geological examination. Scope of the Paper The present paper is an attempt to acquaint the members of the Institute with the structure and mode of occurrence of the deposits, since many people are of the erroneous opinion that they are analogous to the Mesaba and Michigan deposits. It is hoped that, from this discussion, they may be able to draw some conclusions of their own regarding the nature of the deposits, and the importance and future possibilities of the region.

"Processing of high-magnesia concentrates, the recoveries of nickel and copper, as well as those of platinum group metals (PGM’s) and cobalt are key issues of the Nickel Smelting technologies. PGMs are typically found in association with each other, but also importantly with nickel and copper. A challenge of producing saleable concentrates at acceptable recovery degrees, an increasing focus on the sustainable use of metals and recent decreases in the value of nickel has increased the interest to find a reliable route from Cu-Ni-PGM bulk concentrates to product. According to studies, most efficient process for Ni-Cu-PGM concentrates is flash smelting using DON process20 years ago, in 1995, Outokumpu commenced at Harjavalta a new Nickel Flash Smelting technology based on the Direct Outotec Nickel (DON) Smelting Process. The DON process enables production of high-grade nickel matte with low Fe-content directly in the Flash Smelting Furnace (FSF) without subsequent converting. Metal values from the smelting slag are recovered in the Electric Furnace (EF) as iron containing Ni-matte. Matte refining is based on atmospheric pre-leaching and total pressure leaching. Nickel, cobalt and iron are leached leaving a leach residue containing small amount of gangue minerals and PGM’s. Iron is removed from the leach solution in and nickel will be recovered with standard methods. Overall > 95% metal recovery can be expected with low energy consumption and low environmental impact."

This paper reports determinations of heats of formation (from the oxides and elements) of crystalline cadmium metasilicate and crystalline lead meta-silicate by hydrofluoric acid solution calorimetry. The results, in conjunction with known entropy values, yield free energies of formation. There are no earlier data of this type for cadmium metasilicate. The results of this investigation for lead metasilicate deviate from the literature values (which are less reliable) in the direction of increased thermodynamic stability. Both cadmium and lead metasilicate are much less thermodynamically stable with respect to their constituent oxides than are the corresponding compounds of the alkaline earth metals.
