Mineral process wastes, such as metallurgical slags nowadays, are of significant metals and materials resources in the circular economy. The usability of iron-making slag is well established; however, steel slag still needs to be utilized due to various physicochemical constraints. In this context, we have reviewed the global steel slag generation, processing, characteristics, and potential application with suggestions for futuristic possibilities to address the technical, economic, and environmental aspects of steel slag recycling. The steel slags inherit characteristics from ore chemistry and their processing routes, which may be Blast Furnace-Basic Oxygen Furnace (BF-BOF) or Direct Reduced Iron-Electric Arc Furnace (DRI-EAF) steel-making routes with/without treatment in a Ladle Furnace (LF). The average generation of slags in BOF, EAF, and LF processes accounts for 110 kg, 70 kg, and 40 kg per tonne of steel, respectively. Considering global steel production of 1878 million tonnes in 2020, the associated slag by-products possess a significant resource of major components like FeO, CaO, SiO2, Al2O3, etc. Selecting a recycling technique depends on the slag's end use, logistics, and physicochemical characteristics. BOF and EAF slag are used ~ 48% in road construction applications and ~ 10% for industrial specific metallurgical use. EAF slag is preferred as cementitious material as compared to BOF. Hot-stage modification of BOF slag has emerged as a preferred method to achieve desired chemical and subsequent mechanical properties for end use. BOF slag has high carbon dioxide sequestration potential for in-plant remediation among steel slags.

Early in 1912, from information received by the Bureau of Mines, it became evident that quantities of valuable radium-bearing ore from Colorado were being exported for manufacture in foreign countries and that at least part of the manufactured product was being returned to this country and sold at a price entirely incommensurate with that received by the miner and the prospector. Consequently, in line with its efforts to increase efficiency in the mining and treatment of mineral resources, the Bureau of Mines undertook an investigation of conditions. Results of this preliminary investigation were published, in the summer of 1913, as Bulletin 70,a which gave an outline of the radium deposits of the West, the conditions of mining, the wastes involved, and the status of the production of radium from its ores. At about this time newspapers and medical journals were publishing statements regarding the value of radium in cancer therapy. These reports, although many of them were exaggerated, brought out clearly the remarkable virtue of the gamma rays for the treatment of cancer and other malignant growths. In view of the fact that the largest known supplies of radium ore in the world are in the States of Colorado and Utah and on the public lands of the United States, it was deemed highly important for the Bureau of Mines to study the production of radium in detail. Such study, it was hoped, would enable the prospector and miner to obtain a fairer price for the ores and would furnish information necessary in case Congress appropriated funds to develop methods for extracting radium from ore on the public lands under Government supervision, to be supplied at cost to the hospitals of the Army, Navy, and Public Health Service.

This study undertook the development and implementation of a methodology for estimating the impact of coal seam interaction on the eastern bituminous underground reserve base as published in USBM Information Circular 8655. The effects of previous mining in multiple coal seam areas on currently mined and reserve seams are predicted as a percentage coal loss by an engineering assessment model called the Coal Loss Calculation Model. The model utilizes twelve input variables easily derivable from mine maps or other existing data sources and calculates the effects of subsidence and high-stress due to remnant pillars in the previously mined seam. Extensive literature review resulted in the identification, definition, and quantification of the critical variables of seam interaction. Export opinion surveys were made of mining experts, MESA mine inspectors, and coal mine operators. Statistical analysis was used to establish the redundancy of the critical variables and to develop a total coal loss prediction algorithm. A regional analysis resulted in the production of a series of thematic maps on coal characteristics and distribution. A derivative map showing the areas of commonality within the eastern bituminous coal region served as the basis for implementation of the coal loss calculation model. The model was developed and tested using data from four coal mines in western Pennsylvania and southern West Virginia.

Mineral exploration is a critical step for success in mining. However, small-scale mining often ignores exploration best practices. This paper introduces the Tichauer-DeTomi Matrix, a tool for assessment of geological uncertainty in small-scale mining. This matrix, which measures the level of compliance of exploration programs in small deposits with industry best practices, has been applied to three small mining projects in Brazil: an artisanal gold mine in the Amazon, a small-scale manganese mining venture in the Northeast, and a small manganese deposit in the Southeast. The application of the matrix resulted in indexes that reflect the actual level of maturity of the mineral exploration program in each project. Therefore, the matrix has shown potential to be an effective tool for assessment of the geological uncertainty remaining in small-scale mineral projects, as well as to identify priority exploration activities for reduction of risks associated with the geological uncertainty. As a risk assessment tool, the TichauerDeTomi Matrix may be helpful in promoting investment and sustained development in and around small mines.

"Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is an occupational health hazard in underground mines. It generally occurs in the submicrometer size range and is often present in the mine atmosphere with significant concentrations of dust particles that tend to occur in the supramicrometer size range. As dust can interfere with analytical methods to measure DPM, it is often removed from a sample stream using an impactor-type size selector such as the DPM impactor (DPMI). Because the DPMI physically removes oversized particles from the stream, its performance may be gradually reduced with aging. Sharp-cut cyclones (SCCs) are an alternative size selector for DPM sampling applications, with a major advantage that, by design, they should not be susceptible to rapid aging. This paper presents the results of a field study designed to compare the performance of aged versus new/clean DPMIs and SCCs in an underground mine. DPMI aging resulted in clogging of the device and, eventually, a reduction of its effective particle cut size, but when sample flow rate was maintained, DPM sample mass collection was not affected until significant aging had occurred. Under the conditions of this study, the effects of SCC aging were observed to be minimal at the end of the study period. IntroductionSubmicrometer-sized particles are increasingly recognized as significant respiratory health hazards (Cantrell and Watts, 1997; Kenny, Gussman and Meyer, 2000; Ristovski et al., 2012). Diesel particulate matter (DPM) represents a major source of submicrometer particles in both public and occupational environments (Kittelson, 1998; Abdul-Khalek et al., 1998). Relative to other occupational groups, underground miners can have some of the highest DPM exposures due to their work in confined spaces where large diesel equipment is used (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2002; Grau et al., 2004). DPM largely consists of solid elemental carbon (EC), commonly known as soot, and organic carbon (OC) that may be sorbed to EC particles (Kittleson, 1998; Abdul-Khalek et al., 1998). EC and OC can be measured by thermal-optical methods such as the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) 5040 standard method (Birch, 2016), and their sum is referred to as total carbon (TC). While the complex nature of DPM does not allow for its direct measurement, both TC and EC have been accepted as suitable surrogates for monitoring occupational exposures to DPM (Noll et al., 2007; Birch, 2016)."

Until a fire occurs, insurance and prevention work are often looked on as unavoidable necessities, but as insurance is back of all business credit, it is essential to know that in case of damage money will be available to cover the loss; while the interruption of production, often caused by a fire, brings home the realization that if prevention work avoids such an interruption, it is well worth while. Fire insurance is a legal contract guaranteeing the payment of large amounts to an owner, but it is possible there is no other important contract that receives so little consideration. Although previously carried on elsewhere, it is only of recent years that insurance engineering has been actively followed up in Canada, with inspections of an owner's property carried out for his benefit. Now inspections of this kind are made, advice on fire prevention and protection work ?is available, reports with recommendations with regard to the above are furnished periodically, and with this method applied the owner receives the broadest possible cover and security at the lowest cost. Rates are set by the underwriters by rating schedules which charge for defects in a building and allow credits for protection and other favourable features . These schedules are based on the past record of loss of mining properties as a class, so that a fire in another mining property indirectly affects you, but the amount paid is reduced in proportion as your property is improved. The writer feels, from personal experience, that there is no industry where fire prevention receives more attention than the mining industry, and it is a pleasure to advise that, due to this co-operation, some reduction in the basis rates for mining risks is now being made by the underwriters.

A trigger action response plan (TARP) provides a structured response to escalating levels of risk. In mining, TARPs are typically applied to primary hazards such as inrush, strata failure or heating. Necessary for the creation and deployment of a TARP is a monitoring system capable of detecting deviations from normal conditions. The advent of real-time instruments capable of measuring diesel particulate matter now permit decision-making within shifts to address possible overexposure. Deploying a TARP for diesel exhaust emissions can lower the probability of a person’s average exposure (over a full shift) exceeding the exposure standard by detecting deviations of diesel particulate concentrations from normal conditions. This enables pre-emptive action to mitigate or protect. Another goal is to drive ambient air concentrations lower through the application of corrective actions as a result of instances where concentrations exceed ‘normal’.CITATION:Knott, P G, Evans, C, Velge, F and Jeffery, J, 2015. There are several well-recognized procedures for controlling exposure to hazardous atmospheres in industry. They include (a) substitution of less toxic material, (b) enclosure of processes, (c) wet methods, (d) local exhaust, (e) general ventilation, and (f) use of respiratory protective devices. In addition to their employment as a control measure in occupational exposures, respiratory protective devices also are essential in emergencies that may arise from failure or improper use of other control equipment. Respiratory protective devices usually are employed to supplement other methods of control, as temporary expedients, or when other methods are not readily applicable or practicable. It seems reasonable to assume, however, that where respirators are used consideration has been given to the factors involved and that the devices can provide satisfactory protection if used properly. Their use should not be arrived at simply by a process of elimination of other methods that are more difficult to apply.

The problem with best practices occurs when they do not work. This happens when the seldom-stated assumptions underlying the practice are not met. This paper provides some examples for the mining industry: (1) when core splitting is inappropriate, (2) when the use of fire assays for placer samples is inappropriate, and (3) when high-grading may be acceptable. Geologic conclusions are, in the final analysis, expressions of judgment predicated upon knowledge and experience. A geologic conclusion, however, purports to be more than an arbitrary determination—it is reached as a consequence of method. No specific method is required, but the method used must be an orthodox method, in accordance with orthodox definition of terms, and the one best adapted to the dealing with the questions asked about the property in question. Whether the so-called “best practice” is really applicable to the job at hand must be decided on the basis of professional scientific judgment. When one decides to deviate from a published “best practice” for sound scientific reasons, describe in detail in the report what the so-called “best practice” is, why it was inappropriate for the project, and why the method used was better. If one becomes aware that a “best practice” is being proposed, actively urge those proposing it to include in its description the underlying assumptions that must be met in order for the “best practice” to be valid.

More or less unconsciously and from sheer force of habit human beings do many things they probably would not do if the possible consequences of their acts were fully recognized and appreciated. Such carelessness ordinarily could be condoned if human life were not at stake, but it is difficult to understand why intelligent men engaged in the hazardous occupation of mining indulge with the utmost indifference in some habit or continue some custom in violation of State leas and company regulations and under circumstances that may jeopardize not only their own lives but those of scores, even of hundreds, of their fellow workers as well. The old adage that stolen sweets are the best may or nay not have some foundation, but when applied to the practice of smoking surreptitiously in a coal mine, more especially a gassy mine, it is without even remote justification. Although a relatively harmless habit in the proper environment, smoking has been the cause or suspected cause of many gas explosions and black-powder ignitions and has resulted in numerous instances of bodily injury, loss of life, and destruction of property. Likewise, many fires in both coal and metal nines, causing loss of life, have been started by smoking.

The beneficiation test on low grade phosphate ore from a state of Russia is carried out. The rougher-cleaner ? re-cleaner system is used in the flotation process, The fineness of grind is 39.07% minus 200 mesh. The result indicates that concentrate containing 31.25% P2O5 can be obtained from the flotation feed assaying 6.18% P2O5, with 93.54% P2O5 recovery. The test result is also a guideline for further development of some currently operated phosphate beneficiation plants.

The conventional low temperature process for extracting' helium from natural gas involves liquefying the whole gas stream in order to remove the relatively small fraction of helium. A process based on the selective diffusion of helium through a semi-permeable barrier is, in principle, more economical and flexible, particularly for the treatment of small re-serves and low concentrations. The well-known permeability of glass to helium offers the possibility of such a diffusion process and McAfee of the Bell telephone Laboratories showed in 1958 that practical separations could be achieved by passing natural gas over bundles of fine capillary glass tubing. Developmental studies have been carried out involving larger units and more extended field tests than those of McAfee. Fine capillary tubing of Pyrex glass 0.0035 in. diameter was prepared by drawing ordinary 6 mm. laboratory tubing in a furnace. The survival chances of trapped miners in underground mines depend on how quickly they can be located and rescued post-accident. During entrapments, emergency rescue is highly desired but can be hindered by the lack of positioning information when a fit-for-purpose missing-person locator system is not available. Various types of missing-person locator systems are available to aid search-and-rescue operations. From the wide range of the available systems, selecting the most suitable one becomes the next challenge. The available systems have not been measured if they are fit-for-purpose or not, and to what situation. This study proposes user requirements that can be used as a guideline to facilitate the system selection process. These user requirements provide a framework for the design and development of a fit-for-purpose missing-person locator system. The user requirements can also be used for evaluating the performances of a particular system, predict its success, and also drive future research toward developing new technology to enhance the capabilities of the current systems.

In the first Report of Investigations of the present series?(No. 4562) the usual course of progress ill reducing the minerals of low-grade ores to their valuable metallic components had been noted as advancing along two lines to concentrate a usually diminishing percentage of these minerals to a smaller bulk of richer product, and then to smelt the smaller bulk more cheaply per pound of metal produced. Fundamental properties of lead compounds made it difficult to treat much richer lead products than are treated at present in several steps of conventional lead smelting, unless ?marked modifications were made. No limits to the richness of the feed itself' were set by the ore (Scotch) hearth; on the contrary, the richer the feed, the better the results given by the hearth. The natural field of operation of the hearth, as determined by the ores available, was seen to lie in the Central United States, with their lead concentrates containing negligible quantities of precious metals and. with few ores of such metals available for use as fluxes. It was noted) however, that even in its chosen field, the Scotch hearth, or "ore" hearths developed from them, was not always used; the usual smelting practice was followed, at times, of sintering followed by blast-furnace smelting for even rich ores.

The quantitative determination of the mass rate of flow of methane in an underground airway is calculated as the product of the methane concentration and the air flow rate. Velocities are taken at several points and then averaged over the airway cross section to determine the total volume flow. Errors in velocity measurement thereby result in errors in total volume flow as well as the mass flow rate of methane. The purpose of this program was to evaluate existing instrumentation for measuring air velocities in the speed range under 2000 feet per minute; to evaluate the method for determining total air volume flow from the velocity measurements; to evaluate new techniques which may be applied to measuring air velocities; and to design a prototype instrument which represents the best technique based on the evaluation. The instrument should be: a. portable b. self-contained c. insensitive to dust, moisture and temperature changes d. safe for use in gassy mines

A systematic, balanced and inclusive formulation of the vast input data for mine design is presented. Since the quality of this statement severely influences subsquent design it is extremely important to senior mining engineers and the profession-at-large. If unfocussed, chaos can result along with serious ommisions. The basic categories, each a traditional one are: 1) Natural Conditions (geology and geography), 2) Company Capabilities (monetary and managerial), 3) Public Domain (regulations, contracts, good will, etc.) and 4) State of Art (mining engineering professionalism). To further reduce the data additional organizing principles were used: the distinctions of mining (vs. civil) engineering, proceeding from the general to particular, the basic engineering dimensions, and separating dependent from independent variables. The results are a unique and unified corpus, which anticipates the mine design procedure.

Many analysts have had difficulty in obtaining accurate and consistent determinations of the volatile matter in low-temperature coke when the usual standard method for coal was followed. The tendency is toward too-high results, due to mechanical losses which are extremely difficult to avoid or control. With cokes there also may be an error due to excessive oxidation of the fixed carbon. Much of the earlier experimental work on the volatile-matter determination in coal, such as that of Parr, Fieldner and Davis, and others, has been on the effect of time, temperatures, shape and size of crucibles, method of applying heat, and type of furnace, all of which data has evolved the present A.S. T. M. standard method for volatile matter in coal and coke. It is not the purpose of this investigation to deal directly with the above phases of the procedure, but rather to study some of the factors affecting the results in those types of fuel which give erroneous results due to mechanical losses. This mechanical loss is usually designated as "sparking." There are two kinds of sparks or incandescent particles which may appear: particles of soot from partially condensed carbon from the burning gases, and unburned particles of the material itself which escape. The first type does not affect the accuracy of the volatile matter results, and is therefore negligible. The second type, however, causes appreciable loss and results in showing higher volatile percentages than actually exist.

"Automated mining systems are increasingly being seen as a key requirement for a productive mining operation in the future. The importance of an integrated communication network infrastructure to support such systems is growing.This paper outlines the introduction of automated mining systems in large conventional mines as well as their growing role in block cave mines currently operating or being developed. The paper will then focus on a case study of how the communication infrastructure is fundamental to the operation of such systems and explain why the resultant communication networks require much more than just increased bandwidth (data capacity) to properly support the automation system within the overall mine operation.Mining operations already embarking down this road are discovering that the required network must be based on a true enterprise level architecture to not only enable the mine’s current plans for remote and automated mining, but also provide a scalable and integrated platform for future developments and requirements. The emerging issues for the communication network to truly support automation systems include: increased complexities of operating and maintaining multiple networks integration issues with disparate systems problems with reporting particularly as demands for corporate reporting and compatibility with enterprise systems become the norm ongoing management challenges, which will only increase with the proliferation of new technologies.The paper will explore how certain mining operations are addressing this by adopting a long-term strategy for automation deployment, which includes laying the necessary foundation architecture to meet their current requirements, while supporting their future visions for the fully automated mine.CITATION:Paine, R and Kent, D, 2014. When Bridger Coal Company transformed their operations from surface mining to an underground longwall operation their plans included not only the addition of new mining equipment but also surface fans for a blowing (supply) air ventilation system. The original system concept included a propane gas fired air heater to preheat the intake air during cold weather and a dual parallel fan and duct system. One fan operated to ventilate the mine while the other fan was for stand-by emergency operation. Equipment proposals were submitted in March, 2005 based on the dual parallel fan system. Discussions conducted during the equipment selection process revealed that several alternative system design concepts were available. The alternative concepts included innovation features that not only saved space and cost but also reduced operating expense as well. Many of the features were incorporated into the final design of the system. A comparison of the original system concept and final installation design are presented in the paper in addition to details of the features and the derived benefits.

Currently, virtually all new electric power generation systems under construction are designed with natural gas as the primary fuel. Factors driving these construction decisions involve sustained low prices for natural gas, environ-mental (and consequent regulatory) risks associated with the use of coal for power generation, and relatively high costs of construction for conventional coal-fired power plants. Despite the unarguable abundance of coal in the US. and worldwide, a fundamental question arises: What will be the role of coal in electric power generation in the 21st century? Congress, recognizing the vital and strategic importance of preserving the coal option for electric power generation, authorized the Clean Coal Technology Program. This pro-gram, with original funding in excess of $2,500 million, is intended to promote the demonstration and commercialization of a new generation of clean, efficient coal-based energy technologies through collaboration and partnering with private industry. The two technologies being demonstrated under this program which are the key to the continued use of this nation's huge coal reserves are coal gasification and the pressurized fluid bed. Either or both of these technologies, coupled with a combined cycle will pro-vide the continuing future coal option, while responding to increasingly more restrictive environmental standards. Recent Congressional budget-cutting efforts, however, could threaten the effectiveness of that model program, and ultimately other subsequent government-industry collaboration.
