"Gold is one of the most valuable and precious metals. But, the extraction efficiency of gold from natural resources is very low and labor-intensive due to very low concentration of gold, i.e.,1–5 ppm, which means that gold extraction processes produce extensive amounts of tailings. The gold content in printed circuit boards (PCB) from waste mobile phones is about 100 to 400 ppm, which is enormously greater than the concentration found in natural ores. Consequently, processes for recycling waste PCB and gold mine tailings become of increasing importance to maintain a sustainable society. As processing these waste materials by pyrometallurgical methods has become more economically attractive, understanding the thermodynamic behavior of gold in smelting slags under oxidizing and reducing conditions has become increasingly important. Therefore, in this study, the effects of slag chemistry, oxygen potential and temperature on gold solubility in smelting slags are discussed. From the results presented, the predominant species of gold is strongly dependent on the basicity of slag. Furthermore, more basic slags showed higher solubility of gold at a given oxygen partial pressure, and more oxidizing atmospheres enhanced the dissolution of gold to the molten slag phase. As a consequence, careful control of the slag composition during pyro-processing of gold-containing waste materials is required to maximize gold recovery. INTRODUCTIONGold has good physicochemical properties. Thus, it plays an increasingly important role in industrial applications. For example, over 300 tons of gold are used annually in electronic components (Hageluken &Corti, 2010).However, 75% of all gold ever produced has been extracted since 1910 and gold reserves in the world are becoming rapidly depleted (Louis & Pluchery, 2012).The cost of gold production and its price in the market have increased rapidly during last 20 years as shown in Figure 1, and interest in the recycling of gold-containing materials has naturally increased.The wastes from electronic equipment (e-wastes) contain large amounts of precious metals compared to their own respective ores, and therefore such wastes may be considered as a secondary source of valuable metals. For instance, the concentration of gold in natural ore is commonly 0.5–15 g/ton-ore (0.5–15 ppm), while its concentration in electronic circuit boards is over 10 times higher, typically being about 150 ppm in expansion cards and over 10,000 ppm in central processing units(Barbieri et al., 2010).Also, gold mine tailings are discharged after the flotation process as slurry form then stored near the operating plants (approx. 100 ton per day in one Korean gold mine). Gold mine tailings contain gold at about 1–2 g/ton. This is the reason why Au-containing materials such as e-wastes and mining wastes are highly important sources of gold (Yamasue et al., 2009)."

The potential of the nickel matte anode was measured during the matte electrolysis in the commercial cell. The slime layer consists of elemental sulfur and was found to greatly influence the potential of anode. The measurements of porosity and permeability of the slime suggest that the voltage drop of the slime layer dominates the potential. Furthermore, the diffusion of the electrolyte through the slime layer is also one of the factors to determine the potential. In addition, the copper content of the nickel matte anode was found to affect the change in the anode potential during the electrolysis. The role of copper on the anodic dissolution of nickel matte is discussed in this work.

"The distortion of metal parts during heat treatment process is one of the main obstacles in industry to ensure high-quality work and less or no machining allowance, especially for large but thin steel castings such as heavy turbine blades. In the paper, a method is proposed to control the distortion by adjusting heat transfer coefficient of metal parts during heat treatment process. Required heat transfer coefficients can be realized by getting the metal parts into contact with various media such as water spray, insulation felt or materials with different heat conductivity. The control method based on this idea is set up and achieved. By using insulation felt and water spray to change the heat transfer coefficient during the stages of heat treatment process, the results indicate that the proper control time and vary with materials.IntroductionThe distortion of metal parts during heat treatment process is one of the main obstacles in industry to ensure high-quality work and to realize less or no machining allowance [1]. For example, the Three Gorges turbine blade’s distortion is as large as 50mm during heat treatment process. The uneven heating and cooling during heat treatment process is the main reason for distortion [2]. By adjusting heat transfer coefficient of different areas of metal parts, the heat treatment process could be controlled. The temperature variation, direct cause for distortion, could be under control. Loeser Klaus used high pressure gas to achieve uniform heat transfer during gas quenching and proposed the possibility to use ""Dynamic Quenching"" processes where the quenching severity is varied during quenching by stepwise control of either gas velocity or gas pressure [3]. Li Zhichao also suggested minimizing distortion by marking a component into several areas and imposing different heat transfer coefficients on each area [4]. Heat transfer coefficient can be controlled by getting the metal parts into contact with different media such as water spray, insulation felt, air or different heat conduction materials. In addition, the exact time to adjust the heat transfer coefficient is another factor for distortion. A method is presented in this paper by actively adjusting heat transfer coefficient for different areas of metal parts and different stages of heat treatment process to control their distortion. The corresponding experiments have been made by using different metal materials."

INTRODUCTION Controlled ground freezing for mining and construction applications has been in use for over a century. Despite the great technological evolution which has occurred during this period, ground freezing is still used on projects today with much the same basic technology as that used originally over 100 years ago. Major developments have occurred in the separate fields of frozen soil mechanics, refrigeration, and heat transfer analysis. However, except for a few projects in Europe and Asia, these developments have not been combined to upgrade ground freezing techniques to their potential level. In view of this situation, it is believed desirable to examine the art of ground freezing in light of recent technical developments, together with highlights on some of the apparent advantages, disadvantages and economics of the various alternative approaches. The purpose of this paper is to attempt such an examination, with particular emphasis on the practical application of presently available technology. GENERAL ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES Ground freezing may be used in any soil or rock formation, regardless of structure, grain size or permeability; however, it is best suited to soft ground rather than rock conditions. Freezing may be used for any size, shape or depth of excavation and the same physical plant can be used from job to job despite wide variation in these factors.

In 1976, Prof. G. G. Meyerhof published a famous article in the Journal of Geotechnical Engineering titled ?Bearing Capacity and Settlement of Pile Foundations?. This article presents the authors opinions on calculating pile capacities in clays and sands, group capacities and pile settlement. A portion of the article presents correlations of shaft friction and end bearing to the Standard Penetration Test (SPT) N-value. Subsurface exploration via the Standard Penetration Test is the most widely used exploration tool in the United States, so correlations of pile capacity to N-value are significant to the practice of geotechnical engineering. Meyerhof?s SPT-N correlations are relatively simple calculations compared to other pile capacity computation methods presented in the article or found in other text books (such as the a-method, b-method, Nordlund, Vesic, Meyerhof?s semi-empirical, others) and therefore are popular amongst practicing geotechnical engineers. At the time these correlations were published by Prof. Meyerhof, utilization of dynamic testing with the Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) was not widespread in geotechnical engineering practice. Prof. Meyerhof?s correlations appear to be based upon conventional static pile load testing of instrumented piles. Dynamic pile measurements to estimate a pile?s static capacity provides certain advantages over conventional static load testing, namely the determination of unit shaft friction values at discrete intervals along the pile, and the unit end bearing support value. The author has compiled a database of driven, displacement piles tested with dynamic methods (ref. ASTM D4945, Test Method for High-Strain Dynamic Testing of Piles). The data was collected between 2002-2010 and is comprised of displacement piles driven into coastal plain sediments in the mid-Atlantic states of Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. In layered soils, dynamic testing in particularly helpful as it reveals the differences in unit shaft friction for varying soil types. One hundred ninety (190) piles are included in the database, with a corresponding 1,373 discrete shaft friction and 190 end (toe) bearing measurements. The pile type typically consisted of 12 and 14 inch square, prestressed, precast concrete piles; however, a significant number of piles were steel HP 12 or 14 inch sections. The database was sorted based upon soil type, and then correlations of shaft friction and end bearing were derived in the same or similar manner as Meyerhof?s original 1976 publication. The new correlations are compared to Meyerhof?s original values.

This paper describes the microstructural changes that occur when quenched ultrahigh-strength steels containing OA pet C and various amounts of nickel, silicon, and cobalt are tempered. The changes that occur in hardness, yield strength, and martensite diffraction-peak widths when these steels are tempered are related to the precipitation of the carbide phases. An unea$ectedly high silicon content (about 30 pct) was found in the E -carbide phase in a steel containing only 1.5 pct Si. TEMPERED martensitic steels have such wide-spread utility that they have been the subject of numerous investigations, and a sizable amount of literature has developed on this subject.M This investigation, which is a part of a larger program to correlate microstructure with mechanical properties at a variety of strength levels, is limited to the microstructural changes that occur when a quenched 0.40 pct carbon steel (USS Airsteel X-200 steel) is tempered, and to the effects of the alloying elements—nickel, cobalt, and silicon—on these microstructures. Used in this investigation were electron microscopy, electron-diffraction identification of the carbide phases, electron-probe micro-analysis of the carbides, X-ray determinations of retained austenite, and measurements of martensite X-ray diffract ion-peak widths. MATERIALS AND METHODS The chemical analyses of the eight heats examined eats No. 30 through 37) are shown in Table L Heat No. 30 has the chemical com~osition of Airsteel X-200, and the remaining seven heats contain various amounts of nickel, chromium, cobalt, and silicon. The heats were air-melted in an induction furnace and cast into 8 by 8 in. ingots that were subsequently heated to 2300 and rolled to 1-in.-thick plate. Oversize 0.505-in.-diam tensile specimens were rough-machined from the plates and austenitized in air at 1700° F for half an hour and oil-quenched. The specimens were then tempered in air at temperatures of 400° to 1000 for tempering times of 1, 4, and 16 hr, and finish-machined to 0.505-in.-diam tensile specimens. Electron micrographs were prepared from Formvar replicas of the midthickness of tensile-specimen shanks that had been electrolytically polished and etched in nital. Electron-diffraction patterns were obtained from carbon-extraction replicas. The replicas were prepared by etching the sample surface in the same manner as for microscopy, evaporating carbon on the etched surface, and re-etching the sample to free the carbon film and the precipitate particles. Electron-probe microanalysis was performed on some of the extraction replicas. To obtain adequate fluorescent X-ray intensities, several thicknesses of replica were exposed to the electron beam so that the results represent an average composition of the extracted particles rather than an analysis of single precipitate particles. Wire saws have been used for many years in European travertine, marble, and slate quarries. This method of sawing found very limited use in America until 1927 when it was accepted as standard equipment in elate quarries in Pennsylvania where it has been remarkably successful. Details of its operation in slate have been published in a recent bureau report.3 The very limited extent to which the wire saw has been employed in limestone and marble quarries in the United States and the seeming lack of interest even in experimental work to determine its advantages are difficult to explain in vied of its wide use in cutting similar rocks in Europe and its unquestionable advantages in sewing slate in America. In order to encourage improvement in quarry practice the United States Bureau of Mines has endeavored to obtain information as to the extent to which wire saws are used in Europe together with data on the rate and cost of sawing. The information at hand is by no means complete either in territory covered or in details of operation; it nevertheless brings out certain significant features that may be of interest and advantage to quarrymen in the United States.

The mechanism of an abrasion process to recover metal values by removing components from printed circuit boards (PCBs) is modeled using a discrete element method (DEM) simulation. To simulate the abrasion process, a model PCB geometry was constructed consisting of bonded particulates. The simulation allowed connections between particles to be broken if the bonding force calculated from DEM exceeded a threshold level. Simulation results were compared with experimental comminution data using an agitation mill with test PCBs on which nine capacitors were surface solder-mounted. Simulation results obtained from the DEM with the anchoring model corresponded to experimental observations.

Most of the quantity of the water soluble xanthates, used in mineral flotation, is consumed in the process. However, the residue amounts are water contaminants downstream the mineral processing operations and can be toxic to aquatic biota at concentrations of 1 mg/L. In order to be able to discharge water from tailing ponds to natural water bodies the concentration of xanthates has to be decreased. The present paper studies the uptake of potassium ethyl xanthate by directly modified with copper and lead ions natural zeolitic rock, without passing through zeolite transformation into homoionic form. Modified zeolite exhibits high, comparable with powdered activated carbon of chemical purity grade, capacity to remove potassium ethyl xanthate from model wastewater, with pH in the range of 7?9 and pollutant concentration in the range of 10-150 mg/L. The pollutant immobilization is fast. Both Cu and Pb modified zeolite behave as selective with respect to xanthate in the model wastewater, and Cu-modified zeolite possesses higher selectivity. The substantial growth in world demand for Queensland coking coal has seen a number of new coal mine developments in the Bowen Basin in recent times. The Bowen-Broken Water Supply Scheme (BBWSS) is presently based on water supplied from Eungella Dam and storages at Collinsville to two major pipelines. In early 2004, three successive years of well-below average rainfall had left Eungella Dam at critical levels, threatening the regionÆs mines, which rely on it for their essential water supply. SunWater noted that without significant inflows into Eungella Dam, or the development of a new water supply to the region, existing mines would be severely restricted in water supply, and downstream economic impacts to the region would follow. SunWater investigated the opportunities for additional supply capabilities, including combinations of off-stream storages, additional pipelines, and raising Eungella Dam. An off-stream storage (OSS) was selected as being the preferred option to improve the reliability of the system and head off impending falls in announced allocation for the system. The integrated quantity quality model (IQQM) is the Queensland GovernmentÆs preferred model to define and assess total catchment performance against water security and environmental objectives. Modelling of the performance of the water supply system, with and without the proposed OSS, was required to provide justification to the customers of the system that the OSS was in fact required, and also to optimise the configuration of the OSS within time and budgetary constraints. In the case of the BBWSS, no environmental base flows are dictated by the Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Water (NRM&W) at present and the primary reason for applying IQQM was therefore to investigate the trade-offs between supply options and reliability. SunWater produced IQQM outputs for a range of scenarios for the proposed off-stream storage, and these IQQM outputs were then used as input to a decision-support tool based on the GoldSim modelling package. The GoldSim model was then applied to investigate the water supply reliability for high priority users resulting from various existing and/or proposed water supply infrastructure configurations coupled to the hydrologic system. The GoldSim model included the ability to assess the long-term water supply reliability impacts for each of the water supply end-users for a wide range of user-defined scenarios. Non-technical model users were able to change the size of the off-stream storage, pipeline capacities and assumed climatic conditions and test for themselves the relative benefits (in terms of water supply reliability) of different infrastructure configurations under consideration. The decision tool was of significant benefit in assisting the decision process to SunWaterÆs mining customers. These customers needed to decide if they felt that the increased reliability in their water supplies from the system that would be created warranted the estimated increased charges that would require to be levied to recover costs of the new infrastructure with appropriate profit margins. The conjunctive use of IQQM and GoldSim was successful in demonstrating the impact of both hydrological and non-hydrological issues on the future water supply reliability in the BBWSS and resulted in a decision to proceed with the construction of a new OSS.

The Red October Gold Mine, owned by Saracen Gold Mines Pty Ltd, is located approximately 80 km south of Laverton, Western Australia. It is considered to be of a similar nature to many of the Archaean granite-greenstone deposits in the Laverton Tectonic Zone, and presents as an intriguing and relatively young deposit in terms of developed structural and genetic models. Regional deformation events have been proposed for the area, and are relatively well accepted. The most important of these deformation events in the region were the D4b (WNW–ESE sinistral transpression) and D5 (ENE–WSW dextral transpression) which have been attributed to the main Au mineralising phases. At the local scale there appears to have been a rotation of the regional stress field to provide the optimum orientation of maximum principal stress for sinistral movement on the main shear zone.Fully coupled 3D finite element analysis (FEA) was used to simulate the geomechanical response of the system based on structural observations. The geomechanical modelling resulted in highlighting anomalous patterns of stress and strain and subsequent fluid flow as a result of the two main deformation events. The D4 simulation provided a good correlation with the known distribution of subsidiary structures on the main shear zone, and furthermore provided several geomechanical targets that suggested locations of additional subsidiary structures. The D5 simulation provided a great insight into the response of the main shear zone and known subsidiary structures also highlighting additional targets indicating potential for further mineralisation. These targets have since been followed up with a 732 m deep surface reverse circulation (RC) drill hole, resulting in the discovery of two high-grade shoots, with follow up testing currently planned for mid-2014.CITATION:McLellan, J G, Conn, J, Howe, D and Gates, K, 2014. "Manalta Coal Ltd. 's Vesta Mine will supply Alberta Power Limited's 740 MW Battle River Generating Station with 1 128 000 tonnes of sub-bituminous ""C"" coal in 1983. Mana/ta Coal Ltd. and Alberta Power Limited are in their seventh year of a 31-year coal supply agreement. With the exception of localized topographic highs where three coal seams are mined, the Vesta Mine is primarily a single-seam mining operation. Vesta's comprehensive programs of mine planning, preventative maintenance, reclamation, and employee relations make it an efficient and a well run operation. Introduction The Vesta Mine, located in east-central Alberta approximately 300 km northeast of Calgary, supplies sub-bituminous ""C"" coal to Alberta Power Limited's 740 MW Battle River Generating Station. The coal reserves and principal stripping equipment are owned by Alberta Power Limited. Manalta Coal Ltd. owns and operates the additional mining equipment and support facilities. Coal production is from a single pit, 3.5 km in length. Both single and multi-seam operations are encountered in the active pit. In 1983, production is anticipated to increase to I 128 000 tonnes from 906 000 tonnes in 1982. The additional tonnage will be achieved by operating 24 hours per day, 5 days per week. The following sections briefly highlight historical, geological and mining/reclamation aspects of the Vesta Mine. Figure I illustrates the location of the Vesta Mine in relation to the cities of Calgary and Edmonton. History Coal mining for domestic use began near the turn of the century in the Vesta Mine area. Initially, small underground room-and-pillar operations were dominant. As equipment technology advanced, surface strip mining replaced the underground methods."

Fibrous minerals are common in nature but asbestiform minerals are rare. The unique mineralogical characteristic common to all the asbestos minerals is their morphologic form (or habit of crystallization) as polyfilamentous fiber bundles. The individual fibrils within the bundles have a tendency to be very long with a narrow range of diameters and grow with their long fiber axis in parallel orientation to the bundle length. The asbestiform habit imparts to the asbestos minerals sufficient flexibility and tensile strength so that most can be woven into cloth. In the past application has focused on their ability to insulate against the transfer of heat. THE purpose of this account is to introduce to other engineers and geologists who use photography a means of interpreting topographic and geologic structure with the stereoscope. Anyone who finds this of sufficient interest to read it at all must cut out the pictures shown and have a good look at them through the stereoscope; there is no other way to appreciate what is meant. Most of us have been disappointed by the flatness of mountain pictures and by the lack of perspective in photographs taken to illustrate topographic and geo- logic features. The use of the stereoscopic principle was suggested by the work of the photographic division of the Air service during the war. Photographs of the battle line, taken from air planes, were mounted for stereoscopic study, with most remarkable development of topography, penetration of camouflage and, by the matching of pictures with a time interval between, sure revelation of new work by the enemy. Thus, two views taken from a plane flying at 10,000 ft., both of the same terrain but from different points, are mounted in proper relation and put into the stereoscope. If the distance between the two positions of the camera was 200 ft., the observer then sees the topographic and military features as though his eyes were 200ft. instead of 235 in. apart.. The result is startling in its revelation of features that are flat and unintelligible when viewed by the unaided eye or in a single photograph. AN isopachous map is one on which lines connect points of equal thickness of a given unit. This type of map is used by the Florida Phosphate Project of the U. S. Geological Survey to represent the economic phosphate deposits known as matrix and the waste material, or overburden, that overlies the matrix. The top of the bed on which the phosphate was deposited is known as the basement and a subsurface contour map of this old buried erosion surface is known as a basement map. Recent experiments have been made in preparing maps that show tonnages and grades of the phosphate content of the matrix. Few of the operating companies in the Florida phosphate district have applied isopachous (Greek isos, equal and pachys, thick) to mapping. The writer believes there is a need for the techniques discussed herein and that they can be applied to mapping other geologically similar areas in either economic or scientific investigations. The land-pebble phosphate district of Florida occupies a compact area in the west-central part of the state. It includes mainly the following land survey divisions: Ts. 27 S. through 32 S. and Rs. 20 E. through 26 E. The town of Mulberry, Fla., is in the approximate center of the district. The strata of the area, which is part of the Gulf Coastal Plain, occur in thin formations with broad outcrop belts, and low dips. The topography is subdued and gently rolling with three marine terraces, which are found at 30, 100, and 150 ft above sea level,' accounting for most of the relief. Occasional small sinkhole lakes are present, most of them above the 150-ft shoreline. The phosphate deposits occur in unconsolidated sediments such as clays, sands, and sandy clays. They are overlain by a heterogeneous assemblage of sands, clays, muck, and iron-cemented sand, easily penetrated, in most cases, by a hand auger or drill. Limestone, locally called bedrock, or a calcareous bedclay, thought to be a residue of the limestone, directly underlies the phosphate deposits. General Requirements Most companies and independent prospectors operating in the district have furnished prospecting data to the U. S. Geological Survey. The information is recorded on either field logs or prospecting maps and includes the following information for each hole drilled: location of the hole, thickness of the overburden, thickness of the matrix, phosphate content in long tons per acre, grade of the phosphate content expressed as the percentage of bone phosphate of lime (P2O5 x 2.18) or BPL, and the per- centages of iron-aluminum oxides and insolubles. The phosphate is classified according to size as either pebble or flotation material. The milling processes of the companies vary, and the size classification is necessarily different in many cases. However, pebble may be considered as larger than 14 mesh and flotation material as smaller than 14, but larger than 150 mesh. Some prospecting data include the exact depth at which bedrock or bedclay was reached, and these figures greatly increase the reliability of the data both for isopachous mapping and for mapping the basement. A drilling density of four holes per 40 acres of land furnishes a minimum amount of data for isopachous and related mapping. From the minimum of four, densities up to 32 holes per 40 acres are used. The various drilling densities may influence the choice of the proper scale. Selection of the proper scale is dependent upon the known drilling densities, the subsurface variations to be shown, the extent of the area to be mapped, and the detail desired in the completed map. Scales of 1:24,000, 1:4800, and 1:2400 are used in isopachous and related mapping by the Florida Phosphate Project. The 1:24,000 scale is used most effectively with drilling densities not exceeding eight holes per 40 acres. The subsurface variations should be relatively low and uniform, permitting the use of smaller intervals without undue crowding of the lines. Comparatively large areas can be mapped on this scale, but minute detail is necessarily sacrificed, because the information is drawn from a maximum drilling density of only eight holes per 40 acres. Isopachous and related maps of the 1:4800 scale are made of areas on which the drilling information covers from 4 to 16 holes per 40 acres. Moderate subsurface variations with relatively sharp gradations can be shown accurately. The area represented by the maps is reduced considerably in favor of detail. The 1:2400 scale is most frequently used by the Florida Phosphate Project. It lends itself particularly well to isopachous and related mapping, being easily adapted to the multiform drilling data available. Mr. Hauser determined the influence of inert gases on the properties of fire-damp mixtures, and one might take some issue with his work on the effect of hydrogen, on those mixtures. It is valuable information to have, but as far as the practical application of it goes, it is not of much significance, because one does not find it in mines, at least not in any appreciable amount. Ethylene is formed in considerable quantities as a product of heat reaction, but normally, in the coal mines, as a result of a great many analyses we have made at the Bureau of Mines, we cannot say that ethylene is a combustible gas found in the fire-damp in coal mines.

An Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for a major mining development typically has to address various aspects of surface water management, including some which generally tend to be the more contentious: the diversion of rivers and creeks from areas disturbed by mining, and their rehabilitation; the effective management of disturbed area run-off via the collection, containment and treatment of contaminated water on site in sedimentation dams; the collection, containment and treatment of mine pit water; the decommissioning of surface water storages; final void water quality; and water discharge criteria. Environmental Impact Assessment processes for proposed mining developments in Australia at the state and commonwealth level usually involve a form of Initial Advice Statement (or Notice of Intent), Terms of Reference, an EIS, and a Supplementary Report (or similar) which responds to agency and public comment on the EIS. The EIS is used by approval agencies to decide the acceptability of the Project, and to set the conditions of approval. The conditions are often in the form of a state-issued æOperational LicenceÆ or similar. With mining, the initial approval at the EIS stage is often just a pre-cursor to various other planning related approvals, including obtaining a mining lease. Afterwards, mine plans and plans of operations must be submitted to government at various stages of the mineÆs life, ostensibly to provide the detailed mine planning over periods of one û five years. Despite all this additional planning and documentation beyond the submission of the EIS, government approval agencies are increasingly not satisfied with conceptual water management designs and commitments to an outcome (such as meeting a specified water quality standard) in the EIS. Agencies are also requiring sufficient water management design information to be convinced that the outcomes are achievable. To assist proponents of major mining developments, the Queensland Government has published Technical Guidelines for water management, and Environment Australia has published a æBest Practice Environmental Management in MiningÆ booklet on water management. In addition, the Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council (ANZECC. 2000) has published Water Quality Guidelines which provide an approach to water management, and provide receiving water investigation trigger criteria. So, what are the water management issues that are likely to be the subject of comment, debate and negotiation prior to the EIS being approved? and what commitments may a mining proponent have to make in order to convince the approval agencies that sufficient investigation and design has been provided? This paper provides some answers to this question, by reference to recent major mining proposals which the author has managed through state and commonwealth Environmental Impact Assessment processes.

Although tunneling machines have attained very high advance rates in medium-hard rocks, the need for frequent repairs has slowed their use in very hard rocks. Laser- assisted tunneling is expected to improve tunneling machine performance by improving either specific energy or amount and quality of muck. The beneficial effects of lasing are the initiation and growth of microcracks from differential thermal expansion of grains, and overall spalling in the vicinity of the lased area. Using a constant thrust rock cutting device with disk cutters, the effects of cutter geometry, cutter diameter, thrust, and speed variations on specific energy and muck were explored and the improvement in performance of disk cutters caused by lasing was evaluated. It was found that the improvement depends on beam power and density, beam speed, pattern of heating, and cutting pattern and procedure. A focused beam slightly offset from the cutter path gives the most improvement both when cutting on a smooth surface and when cutting in previously cut grooves.

Sivas-Divrigi flotation plant has a capacity of 90,000 tpy. Beneficiation of the tailings of iron ore magnetic separator seems to be attractive, because of its Cu, Co, and Ni contents. In the experimental work, sulfidic flotation concentrate is produced from these tailings. A roasting-leaching-H2S precipitation procedure is used to treat this concentrate, containing 0.55% Cu, 0.51% Co, 0.74% Ni, and 0.027% Zn. Sulfatizing roasting is carried out in a rotary furnace at 690°C. Roasted product is leached with 10 gpl HzSOl at 70°C and 30% pulp density. For the precipitation of desired metal, H2S is bubbled through the concentrated solution of repeated leaching, under controlled temperature and pH. Final metal recoveries of 91% Cu, 91% Co, and 50% Ni, and 92% Zn are attained. Roasting gases with their 13% SO2 content are suitable for H2SO4 production and the leach residues can be integrated with the iron ore processing plant as they contain 57.4% Fe and very low non-ferrous metals.
