Quebec Iron Ore (QIO), a subsidiary of Champion Iron Limited (Champion), completed the restart of the Bloom Lake iron ore mine located in the heart of the Labrador Trough region of Northern Quebec, Canada in February 2018. Prior to its restart, the concentrator flow sheet underwent major upgrades which brought the iron recovery to the highest of all Labrador Trough operations. After two profitable years of production, QIO, supported by Soutex, started to look at technologies to improve its current performance and integrate into its expansion project flow sheet. From the lessons learned while optimising Phase 1, the addition of a scavenger-cleaner processing stage was identified as an improvement opportunity to increase recovery, produce a higher-grade product, and further improve the stability of concentrate quality. In 2019, the NI-43101 feasibility study for the Phase 2 expansion, aiming to double the production of high-grade iron ore concentrate, was published. Based on the metallurgical test work, the hydraulic classifier was selected to perform the scavenger-cleaning duty for its well-established performance and known behaviour at the cleaning step in the Phase 1 plant. To validate laboratory results, a pilot scavenger-cleaning hydraulic classifier was installed in Phase 1. Although the hydraulic classifier was selected for the feasibility study, metallurgical test work performed with the REFLUX® classifier showed interesting potential. It was thus decided to also install a pilot RC300 Reflux classifier at the scavenger-cleaning stage in Phase 1. Despite their apparent great similarities, the metallurgical performance was significantly different, and many dozens of sampling campaigns highlighted the different performance of both pieces of equipment considering the feed material particle size. This article presents the pilot plant results in terms of recovery, selectivity and stability for both the Reflux classifier and the hydraulic classifier operated in a scavenger-cleaner stage at the Bloom Lake iron ore concentrator.

REPUBLIC STEEL CORP. and Armco Steel Corp. have joined in a $160,000,000 project for the production of iron ore from Taconite in the Lake Superior mining region. The two companies announced acquisition in equal shares of 100 pct ownership of the stock of Reserve Mining Co., which controls a vast deposit of magnetic Taconite iron ore on the eastern end of the Mesabi range in Minnesota. Through Reserve Mining the two companies will build a plant for manufacturing high grade ore from Taconite near Beaver Bay on the north shore of Lake Superior. The first announcement calls for about a $60,000,000 plant which will be built as soon as plans are completed and will have an annual capacity of about 2,500,000 tons of iron ore pellets. Committed to a sustainable development of zinc applications, Union Miniere is investigating processes for the minimisation of waste and residues originating from the classic hydrometallurgical zinc process. In that context, Union Miniere has developed a method for the cold inertisation and solidification of goethite, the Graveliet® process. The result is a hard and inert gravel that can be used in the building industry. During the past two years, a pilot plant for the production of Graveliet® has been built and operated. In the present paper, the Graveliet® process and the pilot plant are described after which the properties of the produced gravel are discussed, from both a mechanical and an environmental point-of-view. Graveliet fulfils the criteria for use as a secondary building material. The GravelietJ process is a viable technology to avoid stockpiling of goethite residues and it thus assures the long-term development of the hydrometallurgical zinc process.

Transparent conducting tin(1V) oxide thin films have been studies and developed for the electrode materials of solar cell substrate. Fabrication of tin oxide thin films by sol-gel method is process development of lower cost photovoltaic solar cell system. The research is focused on the establishment of process condition and development of precursor. The precursor solution was made of tin isopropoxide dissolved in isopropyl alcohol. The hydrolysis rate was controlled by addition of triethanolamine. Dip and spin coating technique were applied to coat tin oxide on borosilicate glass. The resistivity of the thin film was lower than 0.18-cm and the transmittance is higher than 90% in a visible range.

"A reliable source of water of an acceptable quality is vital to the success of any mineral processing plant using wet methods. For Cerro Verde, a new 108,000 t/d copper mill in southern Peru, the main source of raw water is the Chili River. The Chili River is heavily contaminated with raw sewage, industrial wastewater and agricultural runoff, and can also receive high sediment loads during the rainy season. The initial water treatment plant could not supply design flows of water due to the exceptionally poor water quality. Problems with treated water quality caused significant difficulties with water consuming equipment, such as the plant cooling systems. This paper details the Cerro Verde water system and changes from design through to start up from a mineral processing perspective.INTRODUCTIONMining, and mineral processing in particular, is a water intensive activity. Improving water system design and practice are key strategic requirements in moving toward a more sustainable mining industry. This case study forms a basis for ongoing research into water use and reuse at mines and mineral process plants, conducted by AJ Gunson, under the supervision of Dr. Bern Klein and Dr. Marcello Veiga at the University of British Columbia. The case study material was gathered through involvement with the design, startup, and redesign of the Cerro Verde water system.Cerro Verde is a low-grade copper porphyry mine, located near the city of Arequipa in southern Peru, at an elevation approaching 2,800 m. In 1972, one of the world’s first copper Solvent Extraction – Electrowinning (SX/EW) facilities was built on the site, processing oxide ore from two main open pits. In 2004, the operator, Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde S.A.A. (SMCV), approved a 108,000 t/d expansion project to process sulfide ore reserves through a new concentrator plant. The plant was designed under extremely tight schedule and capital constraints, with a mandate to intentionally avoid any overdesign."

The dimensions and shape of both airborne and bulk amphibole-asbestos fibers are different from those of cleavage fragments of the amphiboles. These differences are related to the mineralogical properties unique to the habit of asbestos. These properties include the fibrillar structure, small fibrill widths and distinctive crystallographic faces of fibrills. Criteria for distinguishing amphibole cleavage fragments from amphibole-asbestos include mineralogical proper-ties observable in bulk samples and the dimensions of particles collected on air filters.

THE book covers principally the assaying of silver and gold and the determination of these values in ores, sweepings, and base metal. It seems to have been written more for the goldsmith and jeweler than for the primary producer of metals. There were approximately sixty different substances needed in the operations described and not over a dozen different types of raw material (ore, matte, crude or alloyed metal) are mentioned. The methods of separation used were essentially simple and reasonably reliable, though the processes were not sufficiently understood to permit the selection of the simplest effective ingredients, and there was a great tendency to employ complicated fluxes, with unnecessary repetition of long-continued heatings indicative of a leisurely pace of life. Practically all the processes described are based on a few chemical facts: the inability of gold to combine with sulphur, while silver and the base metals form easily fusible sulphides; the ready oxidation of base metals; and the ii- solubility of gold in nitric acid. Fluxes serve to make earthy impurities fusible, and to carry oxidizing or sulphurizing ingredients. Many of the processes of assaying had changed little up to the beginning of the present century. Even as late as 1924, when the writer took a University course in fire assaying, the crucibles, cupels, scorifiers, molds, and tongs were identical with those of the sixteenth century, though the wind furnace had a stack on it and the muffle for cupelling was gas-fired.* The fluxes were purer, but of the same essential composition. This investigation examined the feasibility of altering the inorganic component of North Dakota lignite by ion exchange. Lignite of specific size consist was washed with various ionic solutions and examined for evidence of exchange. Ions of higher valance substituted preferentially at equivalent concentrations. Results indicate that a major portion of the inorganic material associated with lignite is combined in exchangeable form with the organic component. Particle size of the treated coal is a critical factor in determining the rate of exchange. The data indicate that monovalent ions are easily replaced by divalent and trivalent ions, and the presence of ionic material in slurries containing finely divided lignite significantly increases filtration rates.

Rapid Freeze Prototyping (RFP) is a novel solid freeform fabrication technology that creates parts by depositing water droplets and freezing them rapidly to form layers. An investigation into the smallest thickness that can be achieved by the RFP process was conducted. The factors that could significantly affect the thickness of the part built by this process including substrate temperature, volumetric feed rate, table velocity, nozzle frequency, nozzle standoff distance, and head pressure were considered. A shell building technique for use with the RFP system has been developed. Thin wall ice patterns have been invested using production shell building techniques and an alcohol-based slurry. The finished shells were quantitatively evaluated by inspecting their total shell thickness, mold cavity dimensional reproducibility, and shell strength. Pattern loss is influenced by not only the alcohol / water interaction but also the starting thickness as it relates to thermal mass.

"INTRODUCTION The expansion of the Suez Canal, which runs between the Mediterranean and Red Sea, is at the top of Egypt’s economic agenda. The £8 billion development plan includes a new channel alongside the existing one which will double the number of ships able to pass each day and several tunnels to connect the Sinai peninsula to the main part of Egypt. The Egyptian government ordered three new tunnels under the Suez Canal in the area of Port Said as part of the Canal Region Development Plan. The three tunnels will contribute to the North Sinai expansion, helping to create a vast industrial zone and completing the coastal road extension from Rafah to Nuewiba. Two of these three tunnels will be allocated for roads and the third for railway traffic. A further part of the Suez Canal development mega project are an additional six tunnels in the area of Ismailia and Suez. The focus of this paper is on the two road tunnels in Port Said and will give an overview of the project and the challenges encountered regarding the technical complexity and tight time schedule both in its design and execution. PROJECT OVERVIEW The tunnels will be built in the area of Port Said (see Figure 1) which is the most northern part of the Suez Canal.The road alignment connects the Port Fuad Road in the east bank of the Suez Canal to the Port Said-Ismailia highway in the west bank with a dual carriageway section. Each of the carriageways has two lanes. The bored diameter of the 2.8 km long road tunnels is 13.050 m and will be driven with two Mix-Shield TBMs. The distance between the two tunnel axes is planned with 42.5 m (discussion about a reduction are ongoing). The width of the Suez Canal is around 340 m at upper level and around 170 m at the bottom. During the TBM drive, three main geological layers are expected. Below a depth of around 40 m in a very soft clay layer, a dense to silty sand layer is predicted. Within the sand layer another silty hard clay is expected in different depths with variable thickness. After finishing the excavation of the road tunnels, the same TBM will be used for the railway tunnel. The lowest points of the road tunnels will be located 59 m below the surface (tunnel invert to surface) and only 18 m of ground cover exists between the tunnel crown and the Suez Canal invert. Minimum ground cover over the tunnel crown is approximately nine meters at the tunnel portals."

Blast-induced rock mass displacement can have a significant impact on ore loss & dilution. The mischaracterisation of the grade boundaries both prior to, as well as a result of blasting can lead to significant financial losses on account of ore loss and dilution. Ore dilution occurs when waste material is miscategorised as ore and sent for processing or stockpiling, diluting the run of mine head grade and recovery. Ore loss takes place when valuable mineral is miscategorised as waste and sent to the waste dumps, thus never being processed and recovered. Extensive research has been conducted at the University of Queensland over the last fifteen years to understand the impact of blast movement on ore loss and dilution. Recent outcomes of this research have developed innovative tools and techniques to measure and model blast movement. These techniques have been implemented at Ahafo gold mine in Ghana to understand blast movement dynamics and to implement solutions to reduce blast-induced ore loss and dilution. These solutions are validated through controlled trials and have been incorporated into site standard operating procedures to sustain the benefits.

PETROLEUM technology was the sole subject of discussion at the meeting of the Petroleum Division at the Baker Hotel, Dallas, Texas, Oct. 6-7, except for the brief talks by President Becket and Secretary Parsons at the dinner on Friday evening. Even on this occasion, following the scheduled official features, it was in order to talk "shop." W. E. Wrather and E. A. Stephenson, respectively Chairman and Secretary of the Division, had planned for a meeting of this nature and by preference, apparently, the 122 who registered fell in with the scheme wholeheartedly. Not because the competent local committee had not provided for it, but by choice, the members just did not sign up for entertainment or field trips, but did attend largely the three technical sessions and engage in earnest discussion of the approximately dozen excellent papers. In this connection, and without question, the high lights of the meeting were the papers by Morris Muskat and R. D. Wyckoff, and Prof. W. K. Lewis. The former, entitled, "A Theoretical Analysis of Waterflooding Networks," had been entirely demathematized by the authors for presentation at this and the Los Angeles meetings; the author of the latter, which was on the "Physical-chemical Relationships of Hydrocarbon Gas-liquid Mixtures at High Pres¬sures," had airplaned to Dallas in the company of Dr. H. D. Wilde from Chicago in order to present his paper at the final session on Saturday morning.

"Tintaya’s basic production line is copper concentrate, which has an important gold content. The process used is flotation; the objective of the metallurgical department is to obtain the best results in the copper recovery without neglecting the gold, using very specific reagents. Copper recoveries are considered high, nevertheless every day emphasis is placed upon increasing those recoveries. Regarding gold, optimum recoveries could not be achieved with flotation; and implementation of a gravity circuit was considered.According to microscopy studies, the coarse and very fine grains of gold in native form are lost to tails. The native gold due to its high specific gravity is concentrated at the underflow of the cyclone, remaining in the circulating load of the circuit. It reaches three times the concentration compared to the head grade entering the ball mills. This re-circulation generates very fine and laminated gold particles inside the ball mill, passing to the classification stage making a short circuit to the overflow of the cyclone.The very coarse gold particles as well as the thick flakes of gold do not react favorably to the conventional flotation process; thus studies that have included gravity separation have been conducted to increase the gold recovery. Part of the research included concentrating tables, jigs, and Knelson Concentrators. The Knelson Concentrator proved to be the best selection in terms of metallurgical performance and recoveries considering the throughput and operation conditions of the Tintaya Plant.The gravity concentration circuit with the Knelson Concentrator was commissioned in BHP Tintaya in October 1998, as per the flowsheet shown later on. Presently the global gold production surpasses any estimated expectations.Present efforts are directed towards showing the evaluation and optimization of the different parameters that govern the performance of the Knelson concentrator, as well as illustrating the difficulties and successes throughout the operating period.In the first year of operation 200 tons of gold concentrate have been produced with an average concentrate grade of 320 gramdton, having paid back in full the cost of the automated KC-XD- 48 Knelson Concentrator, the peripheral equipment, and the cost of the installation."

To provide a relatively structurally stable form of dried lump lignite, two North Dakota lignites from Mercer County were dried by the Fleissner process in an atmosphere of saturated steam at 200, 300, and 370 p.s.i.a. pressure, corresponding to steam temperatures of 382°, 417°, and 437° F., respectively. Two series of experiments were made at each test pressure with the individual lignites. In one series, the autoclave was preheated to the processing temperature before charging the lignite; in the other the lignite was charged into the autoclave at room temperature. In each case, heat losses were determined by blank tests of steam consumption over a similar operating cycle with the empty autoclave. The degree of moisture removal and net steam consumption were calculated from material balances. The amount of water removed as a liquid from the two North Dakota lignites during the heating and steaming periods was compared with results calculated from previously published data on drying Austrian lignite and Australian brown coal. These lignites, covering a wide geographical area, had original moisture contents ranging from 35 to 49 percent. The Austrian lignite and Australian brown coal are considered to be of Miocene Age, and the Dakota lignites belong to the Paleocene.

High stress underground mining poses a significant challenge to rock mechanics and rock engineering. To overcome theses challenges significative improvements in solutions and best practices of the design and operation of mines under high stress have been developed and implemented. This paper presents certain topics related to the management of high stress for sustainable underground mining. The topics include; the effect of preconditioning techniques (destress blasting and hydraulic fracturing) in the seismic rock mass response to underground mining and the dynamic behaviour of rock support systems. The opportunities associated with research in rock mechanics and practical rock engineering are discussed.

Conditions in underground mining are so variable that in approaching the problem of the economies effected by the use of pressure-treated mine ties and mine timbers, it is necessary to secure specific data for each mine. Facts must first be dug out to show the service life of untreated timber and the reason for its failure. Generally speaking, decay is the usual cause of failure, but in some mines mechanical destruction is an important factor. Occasionally the two causes combine to produce fail-urrs, and it is difficult to determine positively which factor is responsible. In making comparisons, it is always necessary to start with the cost in place and for this reason there must be accurate information covering the labor cost of installation and the labor cost of renewals. When treated timber is used, it is necessary to know the specifications for the treating process, whether the timber was painted, dipped, treated open tank, or impregnated under pressure according to standard specifications. It is also necessary to know the preservative used and the amount of the preservative that was retained by the timber after treatment. It is also well to know whether the timber was thoroughly air-seasoned before treatment or was green at the time it was treated. The kind of timber available, both untreated and treated, must be known and all of the factors listed above must be taken into consideration in the study of any problem. Variable Conditions A study was made recently of the untreated mine ties used by a bituminous coal company in two of its mines, which are about 20 miles apart. The mine ties were secured from the same sources for both mines. A careful check was made over a 10-yr. period on the life of untreated main-haulage ties, and it was found that in the mine where the haulage roads were on intake air the average life was approximately 5 yr., while in the other mine, where the haulage roads were on return air, the average life was 2 yr. Optimisation and control of comminution, pelletization, and agglomeration processes is a complex task with large potential for gains in productivity, energy efficiency, and particle size distribution quality. One factor in realising these gains is the requirement for fully-automated online particle size distribution measurement. Moreover, online particle size distribution measurement that is based on the particles on the visible surface and can avoid or mitigate substantial errors that result from under-sizing overlapped particles and over-sizing areas of fines particles. Literature review indicates a body of substantially 2D photographic based particle size measurement systems that suffer from a large number of significant errors except in the simplest case of a monolayer of particles under good illumination with limited color variation in the material. In order to measure the visible particles on a pile there are a number of requirements including; avoiding particle delineation errors due to variation in material color and shadows, detect overlapping versus non-overlapping particles, and identify areas of fine particles as fines and not large rocks. Results are presented using a fully-automated online measurement system of crushed rock on conveyor belt using a 3D surface laser profile. The system provides continuous online measurement and results are shown on over four hours of production after the primary crusher. Size distribution results are calculated using volumetric estimation of the particles on the surface of the pile. The results show a strong capability to discriminate size variation especially in the 10% and 20% passing values. Furthermore results show that if areas of fines are misclassified as large rocks, and overlapped particles misclassified as small rocks, then a near complete loss of discrimination occurs for the P10 and P20 values which become largely constant values.

Long-term mine scheduling is one of the most difficult optimization problems. The problem is said to be NP-complete in that the best possible solution cannot be found any quicker than checking all possible permutations and combinations. Although a number of techniques have been used in the past, many include significant simplifications or fail to produce acceptable results within the required timeframe. Genetic Algorithms (GAs) are among the most promising optimisation techniques within operations research. They are based on natural selection and evolution of solutions to complex problems. They have been known to quickly converge within a few percent of the optimal solution by examining only a fraction of the solution search space. The GA itself contains very little problem specific information and as such, has been linked to a discrete-event simulation (DES). The DES feeds information regarding the feasibility and quality of the solutions back to the GA during the optimisation process. In this paper, GAs and DES are described and the coupling of the two methods is outlined. The GA coupled DES is then used to ?optimise? a problem and the results are discussed.

The development of a proper treatment for shells in conncction with war contracts has brought to our attention the fact that the temperature of the liquid bath in which steel is quenched has a decided influence on the speed of cooling in the case of some liquids and very little in the case of others. Widely different physical results have been obtained by the use of water spray, water immersion, and oil immersion and further experiment has shown that the quenching effect of water used as a spray or an immersion varies greatly with the temperature of the water. The present experiments were undertaken with the idea of obtaining information of a quantitative nature regarding the quenching properties of a number of liquids used commercially in hardening steel. The general features of such cooling media are common knowledge and in the literature may be found records of numerous attempts to evaluate the cooling power of a liquid when used as a quenching bath. Much, if not most, of the data given on this subject is in the form of a simple statement of the time required for a certain heated mass to cool between two arbitrary temperatures when immersed in the liquid, quite regardless of the path of the temperature change. Our own purpose has been somewhat different. We have attempted to isolate that property of these liquids having to do with their ability to absorb heat rapidly, as distinct from the behavior of a considerable mass when exposed to different thermal environments. More specifically, from the data obtained through autographically recorded cooling curves of a small standard mass quenched under various conditions, we have tried to analyze the mechanism of heat absorption by the several liquids, measure the changes in its rate as a function of the temperature of the surface of transference, and ascertain the influence of the temperature of the liquid itself upon both.
