The separations achieved by eight conventional cyclone washers have been evaluated to determine their performance when processing intermediate size coal of 28 mesh bottom size. The dense-medium cyclones provided efficient, sharp separations in treating feeds of up to 44 percent of near-gravity material at separating specific gravities ranging from 1.42 to 1,55 (one separation of a secondary feed was made at 1.63). Complete washability analyses are shown by sizes of the composite feed to these cyclones. The magnetite losses per ton of coal processed ranged from 0.6 to 2.0 pounds; however, of the eight plants reporting losses, seven indicated magnetite losses were 1.1 pounds or less per ton of coal processed.

BHP Billiton Illawarra Coal operates Dendrobium Mine in an area 10-20km west-northwest of Wollongong in the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales, Australia. The mine recently completed longwall mining in Area 3A adjacent to an overhanging rock feature known as Sandy Creek Waterfall, which had been identified as a significant, and potentially sensitive natural surface feature of the environment. This waterfall lies within the Sydney drinking water catchment area, in a surface terrain of variable topography where non-conventional subsidence behaviour such as valley closure, and far-field horizontal movements are known to occur, over and above conventional subsidence responses to mining. As a part of the conditions of approval to mine, Illawarra Coal undertook to protect the waterfall and the section of Sandy Creek immediately upstream of the waterfall from the effects of longwall mining using an innovative management process and an array of very high resolution monitoring systems. This paper outlines the type of non-conventional subsidence effects that can occur; the range of different monitoring regimes adopted in response to such effects in order to develop an understanding of the valley closure phenomenon in proximity to the waterfall and provide suitable early warning data. The paper also describes the management processes that were adopted, incorporating the use of these monitoring regimes in order to successfully protect the waterfall from the valley closure effects of mining four adjacent longwall panels in close proximity to the waterfall while continuing to maximise recovery of the coal resource in the area. The management structure adopted involved a technical committee, a steering committee, and an external independent reviewer. The technical committee was responsible for design of the monitoring systems, interpretation of the results, and making timely recommendations to the company steering committee who were then able to make informed decisions on when to cease mining each adjacent panel. The steering committee comprised Illawarra Coal management and technical personnel. Although the steering committee took advice from the technical committee, all decisions relating to mining were made by the steering committee. An external reviewer was engaged by the steering committee at the end of each longwall panel to review the results, interpretation and management decisions. This management structure was effective in successfully protecting the very sensitive structure of Sandy Creek Waterfall from potential impacts of nearby mining in the midst of active ongoing natural erosion processes.

Computer visualization can be employed in industry as an aid to the understanding of the complex interactions between variables encountered in production. The examples of ingot casting of rimming steel and that of hot rolling of low carbon steel strip are presented. Both processes are mathematically modeled, and their results are presented in a graphical way. Such models have been proven to be an asset in quality improvements and increase of productivity as the personnel involved get a better understanding of their job.

This paper describes the surgical removal of a 24 ft dia. Slurry Shield TBM entombed beneath one of the country’s busiest commuter rail interlockings, the Harold Interlocking in Queens, NY, and the construction of the interface to a cut/cover tunnel which extended the mined tunnel section. A sophisticated SOE was built around the TBM to support active track loads within 8ft. of the excavation. Once the TBM head and guts were removed, a full round CIP lining was installed connecting the existing precast tunnel liner to the C/C tunnel under construction. All this construction was done on a narrow island of land without road access nestled between 7 mainline LIRR/Amtrak rail lines.

The thermodynamic data and calculations which underlie the design of the Q-S process for coppermaking are summarized. The efficient production of crude copper and slag of low copper content in a single con¬tinuous converter requires the establishment and control of gradients in oxygen activity and other physico-chemical variables throughout the reactor. These gradients are established by stagewise introduction of oxygen and solid feed materials to provide: (a) flash oxidation of sulfides above the bath, utilizing the great bulk of the oxygen, (b) conversion of high grade matte or white metal to crude copper by bottom blowing with restricted bath turbulence, (c) close approach to equilibrium staging of converting and deconverting reactions along the length of the slag layer, from a maximum oxygen activity near the metal discharge end to a minimum at the slag discharge end, and (d) completion of slag cleansing by deconverting. In terms of the Phase Rule, the Q-S process involves a system with a minimum of 5 components (Cu, Fe, S, O, and SiO2) and several liquid, solid, and gaseous phases. Accordingly, basic data from previously reported studies on simpler systems are utilized to prepare an equilibrium diagram for the 5-component system and to generate a quantitative thermodynamic model for the Q-S process. This model shows in particular the ranges of oxygen activities (measured by equivalent CO2/CO ratios) involved in the Q-S process and the relations of oxygen activity to temperature and other important physico-chemical variables of coppermaking.

Paraphrasing the poetic repetition of Gertrude Stein - "Research is research, is research, is research --- ad infinitum." But research takes many forms and involves many facets. Perhaps the most simple of definitions is that attributed to the late "Boss" Kettering of General Motors who in advising a young trainee said, "Research is an intelligent effort to satisfy the curiosity of the human mind." Reclamation research is complex and requires a diversity of scientific knowledge. The overall aim of land reclamation research is directed to finding practical ways to develop efficient methods to restore mined lands to productive use, compatible with use of adjacent lands, as soon after mining as possible; and, finding practical ways to reduce or prevent damage to surrounding resource areas, which may be affected by the mining process. Research in the field of mined land reclamation is not entirely new, although in some respects we are exploring new areas each day.

He worked at the Falconbridge in Sudbury area, also at Brenda Mines, and then he became part of the Brenda Process Technology group in British Columbia. He joined Freeport in late 1993 in Indonesia, and was involved in process control and automation. He is now the senior manager of metallurgy in New Orleans. He's responsible for designing Freeport's new 100,000-ton-per-day expansion concentrator, which is currently being commissioned. Please welcome Andrew. ANDREW NEALE: With the ongoing explosion in digital computing power, there seems to be no limit to what can be modeled, simulated, and controlled in the mineral processing plant. However, at each stage of development of a control system, it is necessary to complete a cost-benefit analysis for justifying the move to a higher level of control. Incremental improvements in plant performance, while often significant, must be weighed against the costs of implementation and long-term maintenance. This presentation will provide examples of what the author believes are misplaced or misguided process control efforts and make a case for the KISS principle as applied to process control.

"CMP will be an essential process in the production of integrated circuits containing copper interconnects. This study aims to improve our mechanistic understanding of the role that organic chelating agents might play in the reactive slurries used in copper CMP. Copper dissolution behavior in EDTA arid glycine was first examined by producing potential-pH diagrams for the copper-water-EDTA and copper-water-glycine 'systems. The results of potentiodynamic polarization experiments were then considered in light of these diagrams. . In-situ polarization experiments were conducted to gain insight into the electrochemistry of copper during dynamic polishing in slurries prepared from EDT A and glycine.IntroductionCopper has recently started to replace aluminum as the interconnect metal in integrated circuits. Copper interconnection offers faster and more reliable integrated circuits due to its higher electrical conductivity and superior electromigration resistance (1). The damascene method is used to form multilevel interconnects in the manufacture of integrated circuit devices with copper metallization (2, 3). Copper is deposited by CVD or electroplating into vias and trenches etched in the interlayer dielectric (IDL), over a diffusion barrier usually made from titanium, tantalum or their nitrides. Chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) then prepares the wafer for the next deposition step, by removing excess copper and planarizing the surface. During CMP, the wafer is rotated and pressed against a rotating platen covered with a polishing pad. Chemically active slurries containing submicron size abrasive particles (Si02, Al20 3, ceria, diamond, etc.) are applied. Both the mechanical action of the abrasive particles and the chemical action of slurry constituents remove material from the wafer surface. Planarization results because material is removed faster from protruding regions on the surface than from recessed regions. Since CMP can globally planarize .the entire wafer, it has become one of the key technologies for producing integrated circuits with copper metallization."

"Tieback anchors are now used routinely for landslide stabilization in the USA and abroad. It is generally understood by design engineers that friction loss over the unbonded length of a tieback anchor is inherent to the system, and such loss is permitted as long as it does not exceed a certain threshold, typically 20 percent of the post-tensioning load. However, recent experience from projects utilizing tieback anchors with unbonded lengths in excess of 150 feet has demonstrated that this criterion may be difficult to achieve, particularly in certain ground conditions. Furthermore, anchor friction loss, even if below the 20-percent threshold, has important implications for the stability of the slope that are often ignored in practice. This paper presents the results of a study in which friction loss is quantified from load test data for projects in a variety of ground conditions by means of a “wobble coefficient.” Factors that may influence the wobble coefficient are examined, and recommendations for addressing this issue in practice are presented. A recent instrumented load-test program for a landslide stabilization project in Southern California is examined, demonstrating that with appropriate monitoring controls, uncertainty with regard to friction loss can be minimized. IntroductionSteel-strand tieback anchors have been used by the geotechnical community to support shoring systems for many decades, and more recently as a means to stabilize landslides. For strand encased in grease-filled plastic sheathing, which is intended to allow the strand to elongate freely, some load can still be transferred by friction between the strand and the grease and between the grease and sheathing. The sheathing then transfers load to the surrounding grout and, in the case of ground anchors, to the surrounding soil or rock. The resulting decrease in load over the length of the unbonded zone is known as “friction loss.”A widely used criterion for ground anchor acceptance based on load testing is that the measured anchor elongation must achieve a minimum value of 80 percent of the theoretical elastic elongation, or in other words the actual elongation can be up to 20 percent less than the theoretical value. This ensures that the majority of the load applied at the anchor head is reaching the bond zone behind the assumed failure surface, since load shed within the failure mass does not contribute to stability. This criterion acknowledges that friction loss is an inherent feature of the anchor system which cannot be eliminated completely, only minimized."

"Abstract The economic and safe design of deep foundation systems in difficult soil conditions is based on a reduction of construction material used, construction time spent, energy consumed and a high-level modelling of the soil-structure-interaction. The special foundation system Combined Pile- Raft Foundation (CPRF), in-situ load tests on the construction site and a sufficient soil investigation allow cost optimised constructions. In any case at challenging projects the observational method has to be applied for verification and quality control of the design. Regarding the 4-Eye-Principle as basis of the quality control management an independent peer review of the planning, design and construction phases is the guarantee for safety, serviceability and optimisation of all projects. Main execution standards for the construction of deep foundations based on the Eurocode 7 are summarised and discussed. The paper presents the basics of the safe and qualified design and construction of foundation systems including quality assurance. "Zinc has been used for many years as a galvanic coating for the protection of steel. Electrochemical measurements show that zinc actually overprotects steel. The corrosion rate of DQSK (drawing quality semi-killed) steel in air saturated salt water was determined as a Junction of applied cathodic potential. The resulting data indicate that at a critical cathodic over potential of - O. 725 Vsce an acceptably low corrosion rate of less than 1 mpy occurs. Using the developed criterion, alloys of Zn/X and AL/X were produced and evaluated in galvanic contact with steel in a standard laboratory test. The results indicate that Zn /Mn, Zn /Co, AI/Mg/Si and AI/Mg/Ge alloys offer excellent galvanic protection along with (a) no hydrogen evolution, and (b) improved dissolution life over Zn coatings.IntroductionZinc coated (galvanized) steel has been successfully used in applications where bare (or painted non-galvanized) steel would suffer corrosive attack. In general, galvanic coupling to zinc, as either an anode or a coating, is an effective means for combatting steel corrosion. Because of this, the use of galvanized steel has increased markedly, stimulated primarily by automobile manufacurers seeking to extend the corrosion warranties on automobiles(1).Although effective, zinc coatings are not without a number of drawbacks which warrant efforts to improve them. For example, because of the widely differing electrode potentials between zinc and steel ( - 1.05 Vsce and - 0.60 Vscc, respectively, in air saturated NaCl solutions), the zinc corrodes at a rapid rate to protect the steel. This is reflected in the limited lifetimes of galvanized unpainted siding. The basic electrochemistry controlling the situation is shown in Figure 1, for a system controlled by oxygen reduction. The zinc corrodes sacrificially to protect the steel, while cathodically polarizing the steel to a potential near that of zinc's open circuit anode potential."

"Foundation soils of a proposed single-span bridge over a busy railroad in Anchorage, Alaska included a layer of sensitive, non-plastic to low-plasticity silt. Slope stability analyses showed that, without ground improvement, the proposed abutments would not be stable immediately following the design earthquake due to the liquefaction of the sensitive silt. Wet soil mixing was selected to mitigate the liquefiable soils and assure abutment stability because: (i) it is a non-vibratory method and can be used for areas adjacent to the railroad tracks and underground utilities, as well as in areas not sensitive to vibration; and (ii) preand post-ground improvement testing, such as SPT or CPT, is not required. Eliminating the liquefaction hazard at the site also allowed for the abutments to be economically supported on shallow spread footings. A total of 511 soil-cement columns were constructed at the two abutments, each with a diameter of 8 feet (2.4 m) and an average length of 20 feet (6.1 m), extending from about 30 to 10 feet (9.1 to 3.0 m) below finished ground elevation. The columns were laid out in a shear wall pattern (in the longitudinal direction of the bridge) to increase stability under the loading by approach embankments.INTRODUCTIONAlaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (Alaska DOT&PF) is currently constructing West Dowling Road Overcrossing in Anchorage Alaska. It will be a single-span, steel box girder bridge approximately 200 feet (61 m) long and 100 feet (30 m) wide. It will have approach embankments, about 40 feet (12 m) high, on both sides. It will carry the new extension of West Dowling Road over double tracks of Alaska Railroad and Arctic Blvd. Foundation soils of the abutments consist of surficial fill and peat layer underlain by soft silt which is likely to liquefy and lose strength under shaking by a design earthquake. Both deep and shallow foundations were considered to support the bridge abutments. The design team pursued the option of improving the foundation soils and using shallow footings. Several ground improvement methods were evaluated, out of which wet soil mixing was selected as the best option.In situ wet soil mixing (hereinafter simply soil mixing) is mechanical mixing of soil in its location with cement slurry and produces soil-cement (soilcrete) columns that are stronger, less permeable, and less compressible than the original soil. Soil mixing is used for various applications including reinforcement of soft soils, excavation support, liquefaction mitigation, cutoff walls, etc. This paper presents a case history of soil mixing successfully used to improve foundation soils of bridge abutments to allow the use of spread footings."

"The ground water heat pump system lades underground hot water which can be heated or cooled by heat exchanger in water source heat pump air conditioner. This system replaces the model of heating of air-conditioning by refrigerator and boiler. In this paper, the formation conditions of hot water energy in Shan Dong are analyzed in order to achieve the purpose of energy conservation and emissions reduction by taking full advantage of water resources such as water pouring and return water of beatification during the productive process of underground metal mine. In order to analyze the issue better, the paper points out some ways and methods for geothermal water often used in underground metal mine. This paper also presents the advantages of the technology of water source heat pump that is applied into underground metal mine. Here is a case study of comprehensive utilization of water source in a certain underground metal mine in Ji Ning. This mine, according to its own actual situation, designs heat pump heat exchange system which is used for indoor heating of buildings and bath for staff. It turns out that the system can save 23% water per year, cut down 3.303 million KW electric energy, and reduce 4160t emission of carbon dioxide. It is concluded that the technology of water source heat pump has broad application prospects in underground metal mine. Therefore, the results show that it is an ideal way to change the present structure of cooling and heating source in metal mine.Introduction In recent years, overuse of fossil fuels has posed a grave threat onto the environment, which makes renewable energy a more important status in energy structure. Development and utilization of renewable energy has become an important direction. Water source heat pump technology is to use solar energy stored in water as cold/heat source to convert energy. Currently, this technology has been widely used in some advanced countries. However, due to facers of implementation technology and component costs, there is still a gap in water source heat pump technology between China and these advanced countries. According to (Blum et al 2011) that after in-depth study, water source heat pump technology has developed rapidly in China recently, and the gap is gradually reduced. Groundwater source heat pump system as a kind of high efficiency, energy-saving and environmentally friendly technology in recent years, more and more get the people's attention. At the same time, its practical application has also been rapid development. FRANCE will be given a large portion of the Marshall Plan funds for relief, reconstruction, and industrial development in France and in her colonial possessions. At present that country is not in position to export any large tonnages of the mineral products needed in the United States. However, if, through Marshall Plan aid and private capital investment, production of these products can be largely increased, agreement should be made by which the United States is to get a substantial portion of such increased output in part payment for the material and technical aid they receive. France issued a decree, published in the "Official Gazette" on Feb. 3, 1948, which permits conversion into dollars of dividends derived from dollar investment in Government-approved projects and will agree to a scale of capital amortization to be determined in each individual case. This decree is to encourage private capital to cooperate with local capital in industrial undertakings. Passive treatment of mine drainage using constructed wetlands has been employed on coal and metal mine sites since about 1985. The technology has advanced significantly since then; there are currently over 600 of these systems treating coal mine drainage in the Eastern U.S. at flow rates of hundreds of liters per minute. Passive treatment performance at three metal mines discussed in this paper has been positive for a wide variety of flows, water chemistry, and climates. The sites include a high-altitude underground copper mine, acidic seepage from a gold heap leach pad, and pumped effluent from an active underground lead mine in Missouri.

GENTLEMEN OF THE COAL MINTING INSTITUTE: I was requested to write an article on mining a short time ago; however, the time has been so short that I have not had time to prepare an article as I would like to have presented it to this body. In writing this article it has not been my intention in making comparison of various mines, to favor one or discredit the other. I hope it will be considered in that light. The coal mining industry as I have seen it in the past, at present and in the future. In years gone by large tracts of coal land could be obtained at a very small cost, and as yet coal land may be purchased at a reasonable price in this country, but I believe the time is near at hand when the methods of mining will have to be changed greatly in this country. Many changes have taken place-in the last few years, some of them have been forced by law, others by the coal operators themselves, after being convinced that the changes made were for their own benefit. During my 20 years in the mines I have seen thousands and thousands of tons of coal lost that could have been saved if proper methods of mining had been used. The Room and Pillar system of mining coal is none. too good at its best ; a certain per cent of the coal is always lost, yet it is about the only system that can be used under certain conditions, but where the Longwall system can be used I believe it is the best system yet introduced. If the Longwall system is used' there is no coal lost. You get it all as you advance with the workings. Some coal operators object to the Longwall system for several reasons, and most of the reasons they advance are not founded on facts. For instance some of them claim it is too expensive. I will admit that the cost per ton is a little higher in Longwall than it is in Room and Pillar as a rule for the amount of coal' mined, but after the Room and Pillar mine is finished as a rule there are thousands of tons of good coal lost, for the simple reason that it cannot be mined at a profit. In many cases if the same mine had been operated on the Longwall system every ton of saleable coal could have been mined at a fair profit, and in the long run would have netted the owner much more money than it did under the Room and Pillar system. The Longwall system has been in operation many years in Europe and especially Great Britain, and is the most approved of systems in many countries at the present time. Millions of tons of coal have been saved by its use in those countries. It is claimed that the Armour Packing Company loses nothing but the squeal of the hog when it is killed, and doesn't allow it to squeal much. Why lose coal if the Longwall system of mining will save it? The Longwall mine is far more easy to ventilate than the Room and Pillar mine; the air has a much less distance to travel for the same amount of working face in Longwall than it has in the Room and Pillar.

"A test surface Pulse EM(PEM) survey over a plunging massive sulphide lens, located in the Snow Lake area of Manitoba, has shown that it is possible to detect the body to a depth of 300 metres. Another surface survey in the Athabasca basin of Saskatchewan, clearly outlined a large, basement graphitic zone below 450 metres of sandstone cover. Deep detection of these conductive bodies was achieved by energizing large volumes of ground with a strong transmitted EM field. Such large fields also energize all other conductors present in the exploration area. Both of the above survey results indicate that more than one conductor is present. In such cases, detailed field coverage is required for accurate interpretation, and interpretational procedures that assume simple geometrical shapes should be applied with caution. In all cases geological and geophysical information should be coordinated in detail. The first test drill hole still has a high risk of missing the deep conductive body and two or three holes should be budgeted per target.Borehole Pulse EM surveys are now routinely used to help zero in on deep conductive targets. They are also proving effective in development drilling programs by outlining the edges of conductive bodies. The results of surveys from northern Quebec illustrate how they may provide more accurate shape and tonnage estimates."

The results of column flotation tests conducted on a bulk sample of ultrafines discarded from the fine coal desliming cyclones at the Riverside coal preparation plant of Theiss Dampier Mitsui Coal Limited are presented. A 9% ash concentrate was obtained from a 51% ash ultrafine feed at 75-80% recovery of combustibles in a single stage of column flotation. From this result it is predicted that installation of column flotation at Riverside would lead to the annual recovery of additional coal worth $US5.1M. The operating conditions for coal and copper column flotation are compared and some differences which may result in a variation in column design are noted.
