The Bureau of Mines studied reinforcement of sulfur concretes using glass, polyester, and aramid fibers. The objective of this research was to determine the feasibility of fiber-reinforcing the sulfur concrete to enhance the flexural properties. Optimum fiber sulfur concrete compositions were formulated with a cement-to-fiber ratio of 9.0:1 for glass-fiber and polyester-fiber sulfur concretes and 12.1:1 for aramid-fiber sulfur concretes. Test samples were prepared using techniques developed by the Bureau of Mines. Flexural strength values of up to 50 pct of compressive strength values were achieved with fiber additions. With non-fiber-reinforced sulfur concrete, the values ranged up to 20 pct. The impact strength and fracture toughness of sulfur concretes were increased sig-nificantly by reinforcement with glass or with aramid fiber and were adversely affected by use of polyester fiber. Strain tolerance was doubled and failure mode was shifted from catastrophic to noncatastrophic type by adding glass fiber. The glass-fiber and aramid-fiber sulfur concretes are resistant to acid corrosion and have proved durable in freeze-thaw cycles. This laboratory and field evaluation has shown that fiber reinforcement of sulfur concrete is feasible and that it enhances the flexural properties.

"The Underground Research Laboratory (URL) is located in southeastern Manitoba, in the Lac du Bonnet granite batholith of the Canadian Shield. It was constructed by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) to conduct geotechnical research for the Canadian Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Program, assessing the concept of permanent disposal of nuclear fuel waste deep in plutonic rock.One of the primary objectives of the research program at the URL is to develop a nondestructive rock mass characterization method that can be used during siting, design and construction of a used fu el waste disposal vault. An experimental program was established to assess radar reflection profiling as a technique for fracture characterization in granite. The highly resistive, homogeneous nature of the Lac du Bonnet granite is ideal for the propagation of electromagnetic energy at the radar range of frequencies and water-filled fracture zones act as excellent reflectors because of their contrasting electrical properties.Radar reflection profiling was undertaken to characterize a major fracture zone located between 5 m and 10 m below Room 211 on the 240 m level of the URL. The profiling was done at a frequency of 120 MHz, on a 1m grid laid out on the bare rock floor of the room. Reflectors identified in the analog data were correlated between the profile lines, digitized, and a three-dimensional surf ace for each recognizable reflector was constructed. These surf aces were then compared with data obtained from the examination of numerous cores from adjacent boreholes intersecting the fracture zone. A very good correlation was found between the major radar reflectors and the most intensely fractured regions of the zone. Modelling studies also showed that a series of prominent shallow radar reflectors were caused by a borehole drilled close to Room 211."

This paper presents an update on hydraulic mining research in the United States. A comparison is made between the development of the technology in this country and the state of the art in other parts of the world.

"Abstract Helical piles have been used as anchors and for supporting lightly loaded structures as a method of underpinning, etc in the past. Recently, helical piles are being used to support new structures because of their simple installation process using relatively light and mobile equipment. This paper presents the results of evaluation and design performed for the temporary support of existing piers during a bridge rehabilitation project.INTRODUCTIONThe helical screw foundation was invented and patented by Alexander Mitchell in England in 1833. He installed screw piles to support lighthouses in the tidal basins of England. Many applications in the earlier years in the USA were in North Carolina and in Florida to support lighthouses (in coastal plain deposits). A lighthouse of similar foundation design is still in use at Key Biscayne, Florida.In the USA, the helical piles were reintroduced as foundation elements for electrical transmission towers. Helical piles were also used for anchoring guys of self supported towers and as tie-backs for excavation support systems. Typically, helical piles are being used for supporting lightly loaded buildings and for underpinning buildings undergoing distress as a means of remediation. The helical piles are not commonly used in the transportation industry.HELICAL PILESHelical pile is a segmented deep foundation system with helical bearing plates welded to a central steel shaft. Load is transferred from the shaft to the soil through these bearing plates. Central steel shafts are available in either a square shaft (Type SS) or a round shaft (Type RS). The Type SS series are available in 38 mm to 57 mm square sizes. The Type RS series are available in 73 mm to 114 mm diameter sizes. Type SS-RS combinations are also available for compression applications in soil conditions where dense/hard soils must be penetrated with softer/loose soils above the bearing strata.The leading segment consists of a shaft with one or more helical plates that are welded to the shaft. The plates vary in diameter from 203 mm to 355.5 mm and have a thickness of 9.5 mm or 13.7 mm. Typically the plate diameter increases from the bottom of the shaft upward. A helical bearing plate or helix is one pitch of a screw thread. All helices, regardless of their diameter, have a standard 76 mm pitch. Being a true helical shape, the helices do not auger into the soil but rather screw into it with minimal soil disturbance. Helical plates are generally spaced a distance of two to three times the diameter of the plate directly below in order for them to function independently as individual bearing elements. BHP has recently constructed a Hot Briquetted Iron Plant at Port Hedland in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Supply of iron ore fines to the plant is by conveyor from the companyÆs existing Nelson Point stockyards. The conveyor passes under Port Hedland harbour in a concrete segmentally lined tunnel, approximately 1030 m long and with a 5.1 m external diameter. The tunnel was constructed by a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) which both excavated the ground and erected the tunnel lining. The tunnel was bored between cut and cover in situ concrete portal structures, the TBM being launched from the Finucane Island side towards Port Hedland town. The alignment required lengthy gradients of 1:6 on either side of the harbourÆs dredged channel, under which the tunnel is bored with a minimum clearance of 8 m.The tunnel is fitted-out with:1800 mm belt conveyor capable of 10 000 tph;walkway along which a specially designed inspection/ maintenance vehicle can run; andtunnel services including power, light, fire detection and suppression communications, water mains for wash down and sumps and pumps for drainage.This paper gives a general overview of the design and construct contract, important aspects of the design and the construction process itself.

"SynopsisThe need to reduce weight while maintaining good mechanical properties in materials used in the automotive industry has over the years seen an increased exploitation of various steels to meet this new demand. In line with this development, the ferritic stainless steel family has seen a wide application in this industry, with the AISI 436 type increasingly being used for automotive trims and mufflers for exhaust systems, as well as a significant part of this steel’s application being for the manufacture of wheel nuts and wheel nut caps in trucks, mainly through the deep drawing process. However, there have been reports of some poor surface roughening of this material during deep drawing, with tearing and/or cracking also reported in some instances. This has been suspected to possibly be associated with some local differences in localized mechanical properties between grains and grain clusters of the rolled and annealed material.In order to investigate the poor surface roughness exhibited by AISI 436 ferritic stainless steel (FSS) during deep-drawing, Lankford values (R-mean and ?r), grain size, and microtextures of various sheet samples from this steel were studied. The chemical composition range for the samples was 0.013–0.017% C, 17–17.4% Cr, 0.9–1% Mo, and 0.4–0.5% Nb. The steels were subjected to various hot and cold rolling processing routes i.e. involving industrial direct rolling (DR) or intermediate annealing rolling (IR), and the drawability and final surface qualities of the steels were compared. It was found that the DR route gave an average R-mean and ?r value of 1.9 and -1.4 respectively, while the IR route yielded an average Rmean and ?r value of 1.6 and 0.52 respectively. The high ?r value for the DR processing route had a substantial adverse effect on the drawability. IR samples exhibited a smoother surface finish on visual inspection, while clear flow lines were visible on the DR samples, despite the fact that DR is the preferred industrial processing route due to the reduced production costs it offers. This observation was also confirmed through SEM examinations. The difference in the surface quality was attributed to microtexture. However, the mechanism responsible for this difference still needs to be identified."

Diffiusion of magnesium into the surface of LiF crystals to controlled depths and subsequent heat treatments provided a wide range of surface zone harahesses and structure, The bend strength of the LiF crystals was increased by as much as an or-dev of magnitude. Ductility was achieved when dislocation generation occurred in the diffusion zone or when dislocations penetrated to the surface from the intevior. A critical surface hardness of 130 to 140 kg per sq mm was found helozu which generation could take place in the diffusion zone and ahoue which the zone was impenetrable, This hardness was obtainable by several methods, among them the aging of quenched MgF2 -LiF solutions to produce MgF, precipitation. Maximum hardness was ohtained in quenched specimens with no visihle evidence of MgF,. Diffusion-zone formation followed a parabolic rate law and an activation energy of 20.9 kcal per mole was obtained for the process. RECENTLY, the properties of ionic crystals as related to surface condition have been receiving much attention, specifically the transitions between ductile and brittle behavior. Originally Joffe 1 showed that NaCl crystals could be made ductile by immersion in water and related this to the elimination of surface microcracks. Aerts and DeKeyser 2 and Gorur 3' have subsequently shown that ionic crystals are inherently ductile and are embrittled through contact with air. Machlin and Murray4 hypothesized that a layer of NaCIO3 produced by contact of ozone with NaCl induced embrittlement by acting as a barrier to outward dislocation flow. westwood,' Rosenberg and Cadoff,9 and Bilello and cadoff' have reported surface strengthening of LiF crystals by coating with a magnesium compound and then heat treating for adherence. The major effect of the coat was to inhibit dislocation-slip lines from reaching the specimen surface. westwoods showed microcrack formation and fracture to be caused by slip-band interactions at the surface. The material presented in this paper is an extension of the work reported earlier by Bilello, Rosenberg, and cadoff'6,7 and illustrates the wide range of surface properties and bulk behavior obtainable by use of heat-treated magnesium-diffused surface regions in LiF crystals. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The LiF single crystals were obtained from the Harshaw Chemical Co. Some batch to batch variation was observed; therefore all specimens for a given test series were cleaved from the same crystal. The typical dimension used was 1 by 0.1 by 0.40 in. Surface damage resulting from cleavage was removed by chemically polishing in a 2 pct NH4OH solution. Each group of specimens was given a vacuum anneal at 700°C for 4 hr to provide a base standard for measuring comparative effects of various surface treatments. To produce the reacted surface zone, the annealed specimens were immersed in a boiling suspension of MgF, in doubly distilled HzO, agitated slbwly for 30 sec, removed, and dried at room temperature. Uniform coatings of MgF, were deposited with a thickness of approximately 5 mils. It should be noted that this technique can be modified for use with crystals which are soluble in water by using boiling absolute alcohol as the dissolving medium. This was found effective for the coating of NaCl with MgF2. The diffused surface zone was obtained by annealing the coated samples at elevated temperatures in a vacuum of lob4 mm Hg. Penetration depth was controlled by varying the annealing time from 1/2 to 28 hr. After heat treatment, the samples were tested for bend strength and hardness. Load was applied by four-point bending in a hard-beam testing jig. Four-point rather than three-point bending was used to provide a wide area of constant stress and to minimize the effect of localized inhomogenities in the specimen. The deflection rate was 8 x min-' and the distance between knife edges was 1/4 in. Load-time curves were obtained from a chart recorder coupled to the machine and converted to resolved shear stress on the shear plane vs deflection, as plotted in the figures. The unstressed portions of the sample outside of the two outer knife edges were used for the microhardness studies. The structural response of propped oil shale fractures was determined for each of two different grades of Green River oil shales (38.0 and 29.0 gpt) as they were heated in an inert atmosphere from ambient to subretorting temperatures (below those required for rapid pyrolysis of the organic matter). Small oil shale cores were propped apart by 3-mm glass beads to simulate a small cross section of a propped oil shale fracture between an injection and a producing well. These specimens were then heated at a uniform bate up to 800° F in a specially designed test cell under stress levels from 100 to 1,000 psi in biaxial and in triaxial confinement. Under the conditions of heat and compressive stress utilized in this study, all of the propped fractures in the two oil shales underwent structural deformation ranging from partial to complete collapse, as evidenced by proppant embedment. Structural collapse of induced fractures would in turn result in serious impairment or complete loss of the fracture flow capacities of the specimens. Results from this Bureau of Mines study indicate that underground retorting of Green River oil shale may be seriously impaired by loss of permeability when utilizing propped fractures in oil shales assaying more than 28 gpt.

"Bubbles play a very important role in different metallurgical applications like for example in electrowinning. During heterogeneous nucleation, the maximal size of the bubbles growing at the nucleation sites as well as the nucleation frequency is determined by the so-called detachment condition. Detachment occurs when the external forces acting on the bubble exceed the retaining forces along the solid-gas-liquid triple interface line. The phenomenon depends strongly on the shape and orientation of the solid surface and on the nature and strength of the external buoyancy and drag forces. In the present study the detachment conditions of bubbles from downward facing horizontal and inclined plates were studied experimentally under the effect of gravitational and hydrodynamic forces. The results show the deformation of the bubbles under the effect of the external forces and the detachment conditions as function of the bubble volume.IntroductionIn heterogeneous nucleation bubbles are generated at the so-called nucleation sites along the solid-liquid interfaces. They continue to grow there and after they reached a certain size they detach from the solid surface and leave the nucleation site. This scenario is well known both in boiling and electrolysis. During the growth period a stable equilibrium exists between the forces that retain the bubble at the nucleation site and the forces that try to remove it. This equilibrium evolves with the increasing volume of the bubble to the point when the detachment forces overcome the retaining forces.The life of a single bubble generated by heterogeneous nucleation can be divided into two periods separated by the detachment - or in other words by the departure - of the bubble: first the growth at the nucleation site and then the movement away. The knowledge of the detachment conditions makes possible the determination of the maximal volume of the bubble at the nucleation site that, in tum, makes possible the determination of the nucleation frequency. This is why so many researches have been directed toward the clarification of the details of the bubble detachment in the past decades. The equilibrium between the attaching and separating forces depend on the presence of body, surface and flow induced forces in the liquid, on the geometry and orientation of solid surface, on the properties of the solid-liquidgas system etc."

The Cerro Verde copper-molybdenum porphyry mine, majority owned and operated by Freeport- McMoRan Copper & Gold, is located 30 km southwest of Arequipa Peru. The concentrator, which produces copper and molybdenum concentrates, started operating in late 2006 with a 108,000 tpd design capacity, processing primary sulfide ore (mainly chalcopyrite and molybdenite). Plant capacity was recently increased to 120,000 tpd. The comminution circuit consists of one 60? x 113" primary crusher, four MP-1000 secondary crushers in closed circuit with dry screens, four 2.4m x 1.6m High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGRs) in closed circuit with wet screens, and four 7.3m x 11m gearless ball mills in closed circuit with cyclones. The HPGR circuit is fed by the Secondary Crushing circuit product at a T80 of 35 millimeters, and the HPGR circuit product feeds the Ball Mill circuit at a T80 of 3000 microns. This paper describes operating experiences with HPGRs during these first four years highlighting improvements in operating practices and presentation of data regarding operational efficiencies, also discussed are the primary benefits provided by HPGRs such as production of micro fractured particles, reduced ore Bond Work Index, and reduced power consumption. Cerro Verde represents the first installation of HPGRs in both the copper industry and large scale hard rock mining.

"The Iron Ore Company of Canada's Carol Lake Project is Located near the western boundary of Labrador, 960 air kilometers northeast of Montreal (Figure 1).The Concentrator operation was started in 1962 with a capacity to produce 7 million tonnes of concentrate per year. The bulk of the concentrate was pelletized at a 6 million tonnes per year pelletizing plant completed in 1963. The remaining concentrate was sold in the international market. The concentrator was first expanded in 1966 to 10 million tonnes per year capacity with the pellet plant also expanded in 1967 to match the increase in concentrate production. In 1973, the concentrator was further expanded to gear with the increase in concentrate sales. In 1977, more than 40 million tonnes of crude ore was processed to produce in excess of 17.4 million tonnes of concentrate and 10.4 million tonnes of pellets."

"A microscope-based spectrophotometer has been developed to measure superoxide release from single pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM) or other phagocytes in culture. Results indicate that PAM respond to stimulation by phorbol myristate acetate (PMA). It appears that some PAM do not release 02 upon stimulation by PMA; however, those that do release 0, show differences in: (I) the total amount of 0, released, (2) the rate of release of 02 and (3) the time delay for release of 02. The significance of measuring 02 release from single cells is two-fold. It allows the simultaneous study of 02 release and electrical potential changes across the membrane of PAM and it allows the study of differences in 02 release among cells. Thus, the function of Normal PAM and the dysfunction of PAM exposed to coal dusts can be more closely studied on single cells.Pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM), free cells found in the lungs, protect the lungs by removing inhaled foreign debris and bacteria. The macrophages do this by engulfing and then internalizing the foreign matter (phagocytosis). Stimulation of PAM causes the release of super-oxide radical (02) which has been shown to be the primary metabolite involved in the killing of bacteria by phagocytes (3,8,12). The super-oxide radical is highly reactive and is spontaneously or enzymatically converted to other antibacterial oxidants, including hydrogen peroxide (H202), singlette oxygen ( 02), hydroxyl radical toil'), and hypochlorous acid (HOCl) (2, 3,8,11,12).Exposure of PAM to dusts may lead to dysfunction of this cell-type and to a greater risk of lung damage or infection upon subsequent exposure to toxic dusts. To date, much of the research with this cell-type has used cytotoxicity (cell death) as a measure of dysfunction. Although this is an important end point, PAM dysfunction may occur at doses below those which lead to cell death. In addition, dysfunction has been measured using large numbers of cells. In order to obtain a clear understanding of the mechanisms involved in dysfunction, measurements should be made on single cells. As mentioned earlier, one of the major roles of this cell type is its anti-bacterial actions. Therefore, asessment of release of superoxide radical in single cells is important in determining the functional behavior of PAM before and after exposure to dusts. Since measurements of 02 production have not been made on single cells the purpose of this study is to develop the methodology needed to study release of 02 from single cells.Recent studies have suggested that a relationship exists between the release of 02 and changes in the electrical properties of phagocytes. The change in membrane potential is thought to be the initial step in superoxide production (6,9). Stimulants which cause 02 release also cause changes in the transmembrane potential of phagocytes (9) and in the permeability of the cell membrane to ions (6). For example, stimulants which cause the release of 0, from neutrophils have also been shown to increase the membrane transport of Na+ , K+ and Ca+2 and stimulation of macrophages leads to increases in Na and perhaps Ca permeability with a subsequent change in membrane potential. In some cases, phagocytic activity has been shown to depend upon the extracellular concentrations of these ions (6). Holian and Daniele (7) have shown evidence that the redistribution ofcellular Ca in alveolar macrophages is an initial step leading to 0, release. In order to provide direct evidence that 02- production is related to electrical changes across the plasma membrane of phagocytes, these two phenomena must be analyzed simultaneously on single cells. Ultimately, measurements of 0, release using the methodology developed in this study will be combined with electrophysiological tech¬niques to study both superoxide release and membrane potential changes simultaneiously on single PAM, and to examine the effects of coal and mineral dusts on their physiological fu"

SCOPE THIS paper is a running commentary on metallurgical problems and developments, stressing ilmenite flotation, since the start of operations five years ago, at the mill of National Lead Company, Titanium Division, Maclntyre Development, Tahawus, New York. [ ] GENERAL In early 1941, when, world conditions threatened to cut off the supply of ilmenite (obtained largely from India) to this country, the National Lead Company started to develop and bring into production their Maclntyre Development. This operation supplied the bulk of the ilmenite used during the war period for the manufacture of the much needed titanium pigments. Maclntyre Development is at Tahawus, New York, on the headwaters of the Hudson River in the center of the scenic Adirondack Mountains. A general description of the operation was given in the Adirondack Issue of Mining and Metallurgy for November 1943. Operating tonnages and production have increased since 1943, however. Nearly 10,000 tons of ore and waste is broken and loaded daily in the open-pit mine. About half of this tonnage is ore, from which is produced nearly 800 tons of ilmenite concentrate and 1600 tons of magnetite concentrate daily. ORE-TYPES From an ore-dressing standpoint, there are five rather distinct ore types and two waste-rock types in the mine. The ore types are shown in Table 1. The anorthosite waste is a coarse-grained white rock, largely labradorite feldspar. The gabbro waste is generally finer grained, and contains, in addition to feldspar, 35 to 75 pct iron silicates such as hornblende, pyroxene, garnet and biotite. The Bureau of Mines conducted a large-scale (6.4 t), long-term (2,165 days) test to gain a better understanding of the leaching characteristics of chalcopyritic ores. An ore sample containing 0.77 pct Cu was leached in a fiberglass column by downward percolation of acidified ferric sulfate solutions. Three sets of leaching conditions were investigated: (1) ambient temperature leaching, (2) elevated temperature (50° to 60° C) leaching, and (3) elevated temperature leaching after inoculation with thermophilic bacteria. Leaching at ambient temperature resulted in a copper extraction rate of 0.44 pct per 100 days. Increasing the temperature to 50° to 60° C resulted in decreased activity of natural mesophilic bacteria, and the leaching rate decreased to 0.22 pct per 100 days. The pH was lowered from 2.0 to 1.6, and nutrient solutions that contained thermophilic bacteria were added. This procedure resulted in an increase in the ferric-to-ferrous iron ratio and an increase in the copper leaching rate. However, the increased leaching rate was not sustained, and 120 days after inoculation the bacterial activity declined, the ferrous iron content increased, and the copper leaching rate decreased.

There are two environmental issues which have only recently begun to need planning in detail for marine mining. One is the environmental consequences of mine closure; the other is environmental terrorism. In principle it is not difficult to predict the pattern and rate of biodiversity recovery after mine closure on metalliferous depositional seabeds. 1-5 years to a self-sustaining community of organisms is a generalized guideline, depending on depth and particulate composition. The rate and pattern of biodiversity recovery on some metalliferous hard-rock habitats is far less predictable due to the patchiness and rareness of the habitat. Ecoterrorism at mines, whether on-land or marine, is now to be expected. A good example of resource industry ecoterrorism is the fire-bombing of logging and cement trucks in Oregon in 2001. But there have also been bombs at mine sites, as at Asbestos, Quebec. It is also possible to regard some resource-loss lawsuits as frivolous, hence forms of ecoharassment. Marine mining operations should take note of the development of environmental terrorism (and terrorism in general) and its various manifestations and impacts. Potentially these range from minor work stoppage inconveniences, to serious financial risk jeopardizing the economics of a mine, to jail for company executives, managers and environmental staff, and to harassment and killing of mine personnel.

"This paper discusses how to effectively conduct energy efficiency studies during the design of new mineral processing plants and plant expansions. Energy management studies for new plants are ideally conducted as part of the feasibility study, but can also be done at the detailed design stage prior to the purchasing of equipment. Energy management engineers work as part of the mineral processing plant design team.Such studies usually result in energy savings of approximately 3-8% of the predicted plant’s energy consumption and energy demand. Potential cost savings can be significant. A variety of mineral processing systems – crushing/grinding, pumping, materials handling, fans/blowers, compressed air, and others – are assessed within this study.Energy Management Information System (EMIS) studies can also be performed for the new plant or plant expansion, as an independent study. EMIS can be incorporated into the electrical and controls design of the plant.Most Canadian Utility companies fund new plant design studies and provide financial incentives based on the predicted energy savings and incremental cost of the more energy-efficient design. A new plant energy efficiency study improves the potential for energy reduction because only the incremental equipment cost is included in the project return-on-investment calculation. After the design and construction phases, energy efficiency projects must justify the entire cost of the upgrade, which is significantly higher than the incremental cost alone.This paper outlines the major steps of a new plant/plant expansion energy efficiency study, the available utility company incentives, and the areas yielding the largest potential energy savings.IntroductionThis paper discusses energy efficiency studies and energy management systems with regards to mining operations. Energy management refers to the systems of monitoring, analyzing, and optimizing energy usage within a facility. It includes energy efficiency optimization of the initial plant design as well as the implementation of an Energy Management System (EnMS) and Energy Management Information System (EMIS) for optimizing energy usage over the lifetime of the facility. An EnMS is the organizational framework and procedures for managing energy use; an EMIS is the system of monitoring, reporting, and tracking process energy use against targets."

As in other countries, gold mining inNew Zealand has been cyclic in character. Looking at these cycles may provide insights as to what may occur in the future and that is the basis for this study.   New Zealand has experienced four gold mining cycles. The first began in 1857, peaked in 1866 and terminated in 1890. This cycle was characterised by alluvial gold mining by individuals and small groups. This is referred to as the Labour Led cycle. The second cycle began in 1890 and reached its peak in 1906 and terminated in 1929. This cycle was characterised by the use of dredges in alluvial gold mining and was also the peak of hard rock mining. This cycle is referred to as the Technology Led Cycle. The third cycle peaked in 1940. This cycle was far less significant than the previous cycles, arising out of the depression when the unemployed embarked on small scale alluvial mining. This overprinted the continuing decline that occurred after 1906. This cycle is here referred to as the Depression Overprint Cycle.   The fourth cycle began in 1984 when production began to climb rapidly from a very low base. The growth in production was spurred by rising gold prices in the early 1980s resulting in relatively low grade gold-bearing alluvial ground becoming economic. But in the 1990s, production from the new hardrock mines in Coromandel and Otago has overshadowed alluvial production. This cycle is here referred to as the Price Led cycle.   What are the future prospects for gold in New Zealand? Although there are many factors involved, this will be largely determined by two factors; firstly, continued access to prospective gold-bearing properties, and secondly, the price of gold. Based on these factors, three future industry scenarios have been developed. The first of these is industry collapse, in which access to prospective property is constrained and prices mayor may not weaken. The second is industry consolidation, in which the available ground is accumulated by a small number of large companies who can use economies of scale to weather price fluctuations. The third scenario is industry growth, in which access to prospective ground is constrained in environmentally sensitive areas but is otherwise relatively unconstrained. Efficient companies are allowed to work in a policy and economic framework that allows them to make a major contribution to the economy.   While the industry cannot control these critical factors, a good knowledge of the positive role gold mining could play in the future economy may provide a framework by which the access issue, in particular, may be addressed from a balanced perspective.

The mining of coal in Alaska receives special treatment in the Surface Mining and Reclamation Act passed by the U.S. Congress in 1977 (PL95-87). Section 708 of the Act required that the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) perform a study of "Surface Coal Mining Conditions in the State of Alaska, In Order to Determine Which, If Any, of the Provisions of the Act Should be Modified with respect to Surface Coal Mining Operations in Alaska'. The special committee on Alaskan Coal Mining and Reclamation of NAS completed their study in 1980 and prepared their report (NAS, 1980). At this time, the Secretary of the Interior and the Congress have taken no special action with regard to either special regulations geared specifically to Alaska or to submitting special draft legislation to the Congress requesting amendment of PL95-87. The Alaska Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has drafted legislation which was submitted to and passed by the 1982 session of the State Legislature. The State regulatory agency has also drafted the requisite regulations necessitated by the amendments to the State's Basic Coal Mining Act. It is expected that by mid 1983 DNR will have applied for "primacy" to the office of Surface Mining, U.S. Department of the Interior (OSM). They will be submitting the amended State Law, the revised State Regulations and an operational plan as called for by OSM regulations. The presumption is that primacy will be granted to the State of Alaska under PL95-87. The Usibelli Coal Mine continues to be the only operational commercial mine for coal in the State of Alaska. It produced 7.26 x 10 kg (8 x 10 " T) of coal during 1981. The current mine was started in 1920 by Captain Lathrop, an early developer and pioneer in Alaska. It was continued by Emil Usibelli and was taken over after the death of E. Usibelli (in the 1964 earthquake) by his son Joseph Usibelli who is the current President of, the firm3 Their latest improvement is a 27.5 m (36 yd. )Bucyrus-Erie Dragline which handles most of the overburden removal. The coal is removed by a loader-truck combination. They are currently starting up the use of a unit train loading facility which handles forty cars every two hours. This loading system was a development necessitated by the Sun Eel Export contract. The Alaskan Railroad was a major cooperator in the development of the first unit train loading facility in Alaska.

Sound Transit’s ST3 program will add 62 miles of light rail to the Puget Sound area, including connections to the neighborhoods of West Seattle currently anticipated by 2031 and Ballard by 2036. These connections include considerations for both elevated and tunnel alternatives, as well as a new downtown tunnel for which different configurations are being considered with potentially very different construction logistics and risk profiles. This paper describes the latest developments in the ongoing evaluation process that will inform the consideration of different tunnel and station construction methods, technical and operational challenges and contracting methodologies, including construction of deep stations in dense urban environments.

"I have been involved in the refractory industry for many years and at some time or another I have designed materials, tested materials, manufactured materials, installed materials, in fact I have done everything except actually chemically analyzed a refractory material.So I would not even begin to tell you how to analyse a refractory material. I'm sure everyone here knows more about chemical analysis than I do.However you could regard me as a customer with and perhaps the insights I have developed may help in putting the role of chemical analysis in the Refractories into perspective.For a start, let's take a step back and ask why we test refractories. The refractories handbook of the American Foundry Association gives four reasons:1. To determine appropriate specification.2. For quality control, to ensure conformance to specifications.3. To provide special property information not available elsewhere.4. For postmortem analysis to determine property changes in service and provideinformation that can point the way to better service.I want to discuss these points with regard to the role of chemical analysis and in particular the abuse of in house chemical analysis facilities.
