Baoahan Iron and Steel Complex is situated at lower beaches of the Yangtze River. The subsoils 50~70 M below the surface is a deposite of Yangtze River delta, consisting mainly of weak silty clay and loam, with low soil bearing capacity. Consequently, to build on such a weak soil a grant iron and steel integrated works weak soil improvement at the Complex, pile foundation is the effective type. It is estimated that at the first stage of Baoshan project 60,000 piles have been driven, of which 60% are steel pipe piles and 40% reinforced concrete piles. To provide reliable basis for pile foundation design, on-site loading tests were carried out for long reinforced concrete piles 27,45 60 M in length ,with strain gauges on the chief reinforcement of pile shaft and strain rod on pile tip. Based on loading tests, the paper discusses and analyses some issues, including determination of load transfer mechanism distribution of frictional resistance. Tests show that as far as long friction piles in soft clay are concerned, regardless of the properties of pile tip's bearing stratum, loads are mainly carried by shaft frictional resistance which it is effective to determine pile capacity in terms of P ~ S relationship.

Reasons for reexamining underground mining include: 1. The assurance that more deep deposits of useful minerals will be found. 2. The existence of deeply covered deposits of industrial minerals near large markets where quarries are becoming depleted or are lacking. 3. Surface property values, zoning and other limitations on open pit mining. 4. Expectation that underground space will be increasingly used for transportation, power plants, storage and similar purposes. 5. The improvements which have been made in underground mining. During the last three or four decades many changes and improvements have been made underground. All underground construction and mining has benefitted to some extent but the effect on the productivity of labor employed with some methods- has changed little and the use of these methods has declined. Productivity of labor in other methods has increased substantially. The relative usefulness of mining methods has changed and a vital industry, bituminous coal, has been returned to health. In this paper, consideration is limited to nine methods used with high productivity during the period under review. These methods are not necessarily better than others but they may be considered the prime methods in the sense that, in our economy, many, low grade ores, coal and the principal industrial minerals could hardly be produced by less productive means.2 Although most of the examples cited are from mining as such., the first four methods discussed can be used for the construction of stable excavations of various' shapes in sound rock.

"The number of High Pressure Grinding Rolls (“HPGRs”, also called Roller Press) installations instead of tertiary crushers is rapidly increasing. The technology has been largely accepted in the minerals industry and benefits, such as superior energy efficiency and a lower overall operating cost compared to alternative technologies, have been demonstrated at a number of operations throughout the world.This paper focuses on coarse hard ore operations and reviews the successful installation of the first Roller Press installed instead of a tertiary crusher at the Los Colorados Plant of CMH (Chile) in 1998. It details the experience obtained over the past ten years of operation from commissioning to the present day. It highlights examples of further developments made in the design to improve machine maintainability and availability as well as wear life of the grinding surfaces.A second focus lies on procedures to derive from small scale testing material properties such as wear life, flake formation and strength and their application to industrial size machines to optimize circuit design, especially when Roller Presses are used in closed circuit with screening.INTRODUCTIONRoller Presses (also known as HPGR, High Pressure Grinding Rolls) are considered today state of the art for the preparation of pellet feed. They are also gaining wide acceptance in coarse ore operations. One of the first successful operations in which a roller press was used to replace a conventional tertiary and quaternary crusher is the Los Colorados plant of CMH in Chile.When the Roller Press at Los Colorados was commissioned in 1988, there were 169 Humboldt Wedag roller presses in operation throughout the world. Of these, 14 were installed in the minerals industry. However, these were installed mainly for grinding pellet feed to increase the Blaine value. Up to that time, only three KHD roller presses had been applied for crushing coarse ore in specialized circuits. Moreover, the installation at Los Colorados was the first Roller Press ever to replace a conventional tertiary and quaternary crusher in a hard ore application."

The paper covers the history and develop- ment of electrical and diesel-powered hydrau- lic percussion rock drills. It examines main design aspects and problems encountered in pro- ducing an efficient and reliable machine to fully cover the nominal hole sizes required for underground development, production drill- ing and for general quarry work. The main design features and advantages of a hydraulic rock drill are relatively low input power requirement to energy per blow (this being achieved by the use of an electric or diesel- powered hydraulic system) and a specially con- structed piston using a powered damper cylinder to absorb the recoil forces from the drill steel and reduce stresses on the drill, feed and hydraulic boom. A further important design feature is the anti-jamming device which controls the drill both during manual and automatic operation. This anti-jam device works on feed and rotation press and prevents the drill bit becoming jammed in broken or soft ground. These features and many other mechanical and environmental benefits are highlighted when comparing hydraulic percussion rock drills with current pneumatic machines. The hydraulic rock drill gives an overall high penetration and production rate, with an added bonus for ergonomy and environmental conditions such as lower noise level, no fogging from air and oil exhaust (which naturally gives better air for breathing),plus improved vision when in under- ground situations. Hydraulic rock drills and systems have been fully tested in many mines, quarries and contract sites during the past years. They h6! been improved and modified and are now provi~ to be very reliable and economical piece drilling equipment whò in mines and quarries.

This study investigates the roof stability of underground limestone mining in the presence of stratified joints during the excavation process. An analytical solution is derived to predict the stresses and deformation of underground tunnel structures, with the structure simplified as a double-hinge arch. The accuracy of the analytical model is validated through comparison with finite element modeling results. A parametric study is then conducted to assess the influence of different design parameters on the optimization of tunnel stability during excavation. The results indicate that the best stability of the tunnel can be achieved in engineering practices when the applied load (q) is 5 MPa and the joint inclination angle (θ) is 45°, with the roof span and thickness set at either 12 m and 8 m or 15 m and 10 m. These findings provide valuable design guidance for underground limestone mines with stratified joints.

Underground mining environments bring with them occupational health and safety issues with some severe dangers, such as mine explosions. During such events, miners may escape using main access openings or find a safe haven like a refuge alternative (RA) to wait and be rescued and evacuated to the surface. In this paper, RAs are explained with their early and current applications. A classification as permanent and portable is detailed, depending on conditions and abilities. This classification is followed by the utilization and survivability of RAs with the requirements and recommendations of the main mining countries. Based on the utilization and survivability constraints, basic human requirements, waiting for a rescue team, and the required physical specifications of RAs during the events are analyzed in detail for various countries with their regulations. Among these, the specification of resistance to explosion is discussed in particular, and studies in the literature are examined in terms of structural deformation.

Impacted waters, often complex, are created in mining which at some point in the mine life cycle will need to be attended. The simplest and most cost effective method of handling impacted water is to reuse it as makeup water for operations. At the end of mine life, operational reuse will not be an option and the impacted water will require treatment to achieve alternative reuse goals. Conventional mine impacted water treatment is successful in removing unwanted constituents but create brine and sludge that may require special handling or additional treatment, resulting in additional liabilities and costs. Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold has taken an approach to water treatment that focuses on transformation not concentration. The Water Treatment Test Facility located at Sierrita Mine has three test plants that are piloting the mine impacted water transformation process. Two plants have been designed for the removal of calcium and sulfate with products of gypsum and sulfur. The third plant removes metals from process water and transforms them into marketable metal sulfides. The transformation, rather than concentration, of mine impacted water solutes greatly reduce long term risks.

Blue amphibole-bearing rocks in the North D'aguilar Block of southeast Queensland occur either as relict pods and lenses within regionally extensive greenschist facies phyllites and schists or as blocks entrained in serpentinite-matrix melange. Epidote + crossite-bearing varieties predominate and formed under conditions consistent with underplating and high P:T metamorphism in a subduction-related tectonic environment. Neither lawsonite nor jadeite has been observed and metamorphic conditions are estimated at 380-4500C for pressures of 0.5-0.8 GPa. High P:T metamorphism occurred during the earliest stages of deformation and was superimposed upon protoliths of inferred Late Devonian - Early Carboniferous age, including mafic volcanics, tuffs and coarse volcaniclastic breccias as well as pelagic and henipelagic sediments, all of which have undergone varying degrees of over-printing to the greenschist facies. Greenschist facies metamorphism occurred during the second phase of deformation and was associated with the formation of mainly flat-lying or subhorizontal structures; it followed the cessation of subduction and occurred in response to either thermal relaxation during uplift or the imposition of regional heating induced by crustal thickening and/or synkinanatic granite emplacement. Uplift and cooling of the high P:T rocks was completed by 260-265 Ma and may have occurred in response to the same extensional processes which gave rise to the onset of rifting in the adjacent Esk Trough.

PERHAPS the most extraordinary thing about business, the trade and production of the country as a whole, is its amazing continuity and growth, its momentum and energy. It goes on year after year, growing steadily, almost without breaks, in spite of every kind of disturbance. We have been grossly deceived into the idea that business is highly variable. We have taken a few things like pig iron, and the like, constructional activity broadly, and imagined that these are a trustworthy measure of trade. Actually they are the worst that we could find. They do not apply to more than 10 per cent or, at the most, possibly 15 per cent of the total of the country's industrial activity. The other 85 or 90 per cent, or even more, goes on growing surely and steadily just like the growth of population and the steady advance in technique, invention, discovery, and improved methods of production Let me give you what seems to me one of the most remarkable examples of this amazing momentum and regularity. You know that 90 per cent or more of the business of the country is done 'by means of checks. About seven-eighths of the total of all checks drawn are reported regularly every week in the newspapers. Let us follow these reports from week to week, just as they come, and plot them up against the correspond- ing weeks of last year, and the year before, and the gear before that, as far back as you would like to go. Take especially the figures for 140 selected cities out- side of New York.

Note. - Securing mine roof through consolidating thin or otherwise incompetent strata to increase overall thickness of the immediate roof beam is a new method of roof support and control which has aroused great interest amongst mining engineers and which is now being experimented with and thoroughly investigated by the United States Bureau of Mines. A paper on Roof Bolting, illustrated by photographs and motion-picture films, will be presented by Edward Thomas, of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, at the forthcoming Annual Meeting of the Mining Society of Nova Scotia. In the following pages, Mr. Thomas describes the methods used in roof bolting as illustrated by the photographs that accompanied his paper. The photographs are supplied through the courtesy of the United States Bureau of Mines, whose willing cooperation with miners and mining engineers in Canada is very well known and even more greatly appreciated. This method of publishing Mr. Thomas's paper is adopted because few, if any, Canadian mining engineers have actually seen installations of roof bolts and it is felt that the best possible presentation of such an interesting subject through the medium of the Bulletin will be attained by publication of the photograps over explanatory captions. - Ed.

In the systems Mo-Fe-C, Mo-Co-C, and Mo-Ni-C the phase boumdaries of the cubic Ij carbides were determined at 1000°C and the variation of the lattice parameter with composition was measured. In the system Mo-Fe-C a single ternary carbide, Mo3Fe3C, was observed. In Mo-Co-C and Mo-Ni-C two new n phases of the type M12C were found: Mo6C06C and Mo6Ni6C. At 1000°C they coexist with the M6C phases MO3-4,CO3-2C and Mo3-4Ni3-2C, respectively. Mo3C03C and Mo4C02C are not separate phases but parts of a single M6C phase region, and the same is true of Mo3Ni3C and Mo4Ni2C. THE n carbide structure type has been known since it was determined by westgren' in 1933, yet reliable information on phase compositions of this type is ap-parently scarce. The following selection of suggested formulas illustrates the extent of the confusion con-cerning compositions: W2-3Fe4-3C,1W6Fe6C,2 W2_4Fe4-2C,3 (W,Fe)6C,4 Tj.-W4Co2C and nz-W6Co6C,5 n1-W3Co3C and n2-w4Co2C,5 W3C03C and w6Co3C2,7 MO3Fe3C,8n2-M04Fe2C,9 (MO,Fe)6C,4 MO3CO3C,8 n2-MO4CO2C.9 Many of these compositions obviously overlap, some disagree in carbon content. The use of the designations 77, and n2 is not consistent. There is uncertainty whether two carbides M6C coexist or whether there is only one M6C with a wide range of substitution of one metal for the other. The existence of M12C seems questionable altogether if one ignores the results of a neutron diffraction study of W6Fe6C supporting that particular metal to carbon ratio.'' More reliable information is available for the iso-typic oxides studied by Nevitt,11 Nevitt, Downey, and orris," and Meussner and carpenter.l3 That n car-bides and oxides are structurally identical, particularly with respect to the location of the metalloid atom, has been demonstrated clearly by Stadelmaier and Meussner14 and also by Parthe, Jeitschko, and sadagopan.15 Therefore the present paper, which attempts to establish the phase boundaries of n defini-tively for three carbon systems, has implications for the whole family of filled Ti2Ni types. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The samples were prepared in two stages. Pellets weighing 3 g were compacted from powders of the elements and presintered in a closed tube of fused silica that had been evacuated to lO-4 mm Hg. This was fol- lowed by arc melting the sintered samples under argon. Remelting the button once was sufficient to produce homogeneous specimens. The metal powders had the following minimum purities in wt pct: molybdenum 99.5, iron 99.0, cobalt 99.7, nickel 99.9, graphite 99.94. Carbon determinations by the gas volumetric method were obtained from thirty-one of the one hundred samples in the annealed condition. They were limited to compositions that were critical to placing a boundary line in the isothermal sections. The carbon losses were comparatively low and averaged less than 1.5 at. pct. For annealing, the samples were sealed in tubes of fused silica evacuated to 10-4 mm Hg. The annealing schedule was 20 hr at 1250°C followed by 150 hr at 1000" ±10°C. For the water quench the silica glass tubes were broken mechanically to speed the quench. The specimens were examined in the as-cast and annealed condition by standard metallographic techniques. Some of the as-cast and all annealed samples were studied by X-ray diffraction using a 114.6-mm powder camera with filtered Co radiation. The lattice parameters of the n phases were determined by graphic extrapolation to 8 = 90 deg on a plot against sin2 8. It is estimated that the maximum error in the lattice parameters is ±0.002A.. The phase fields were determined by the disappearing phase method, relying on X-rays for phase identification and on microscopy to detect small amounts of a phase. RESULTS Pertinent information on the binary side diagrams has been summarized by Hansen and Anderko16 and Elliott17 and will not be discussed further. Photomicrographs documenting the equilibria at 1000°C have been selected to avoid redundancy due to the similarity of the three systems. Thus there will be only one picture showing an equilibrium with Mo2C, and so forth. Molybdenum-Iron-Carbon. An isothermal section of most of the Mo-Fe-C system at 1000°C is shown in Fig. 1. No attempt has been made to distinguish between a and y iron or to determine their phase boundaries. A conspicuous absence is the phase Fe2 1Mo2C6 with the Cr23C6 structure, supporting the suggestion by Krainer4 that it decomposes by annealing at high temperatures. The only ternary phase is found in a narrow range around Mo3Fe3C (MO43Fe43C14). A microstructure with a two-phase mixture of Mo + n is seen in Fig. 2. The variation of the lattice parameter of n with the estimated composition is shown in in Table IA. The phase diagram does not agree with the results of Kuo9 who reported n2-Mo4Fe2C. Our lattice parameter Varies from 11.095A at the iron-rich end to 11.140Å at the molybdenum-richoend of the phase field whereas Kuo9reported 11.26Å for Mo4Fe2C. "VIBRONICS, INC. instrumented and monitored a residential structure for response to,blasting at aMidwestern surface coal operation. The residence was owned by the mining company and was extremely close to the operation. Blasting was conducted within 120 feet (36.5 meters) of the test structure. Up to seventeen (17), four (4)-channel seismographs were used during the monitoring period. The basement walls and floor were monitored. VIBRONICS, INC. also monitored a brick chimney in the basement and attic. Structural responses were then compared to outside vibration measurements taken in the soil near the foundation."

Traditionally gold producers had built up hedge books to protect themselves against adverse changes in the commodity price, but diversified mining groups were staunchly opposed to hedging in any shape or form. The situation has evolved over the past few years. Gold miners have been reducing the size of their hedge books in line with the rising gold price. Commentators have talked about ædouble-digit dehedgingÆ and have suggested that this is the final countdown for gold hedge books. It sounded as if the era of hedging by mining companies was drawing to a close. But as appearances can sometimes be misleading, we decided to find out what mining companies were actually doing. Companies listed on stock exchanges are now obliged to give details of their derivatives holdings in their annual reports. Two or three years ago there was no such obligation. Our reality check was based on the latest annual report issued by three multinational mining groups; two with diametrically opposed views on hedging (Rio Tinto and Barrick) and the third (BHP Billiton) with an intermediate position. This snapshot of their derivative positions at a point in time revealed that Barrick and BHP Billiton have substantial derivatives positions (worth billions of dollars) to protect against adverse changes in foreign exchange rates and interest rates. Moreover Barrick has recently started hedging against increases in fuel prices. Despite its opposition to hedging, Rio Tinto has derivative positions worth several hundred million dollars, but these are primarily a legacy from various mergers and acquisitions over recent years or were entered into as a condition of project financing. Lastly we were surprised to discover that Barrick was holding asset-backed commercial paper (ABCP). So the idea that mining companies donÆt hedge their risks is just another urban myth.

We report Hitachi's approach to establish the recycling process for rare-earth metals in magnet. We have developed a process to disassemble the used electric products to collect the magnets, a process to remove the surface plating film of the magnet, and processes to separate rare-earth metals from the magnet. All processes are operated without chemical solutions in order to minimize the environmental impact due to the waste water emission. For the disassemble process, we have developed an equipment to generate continuous shock on the electric products to loosen screws. A sand blast technique is applied for the plating removal process. Rare earth metals in the magnets are extracted by immersion of the magnets in molten magnesium. The extracted rare-earth metals are separated from Mg by evaporation of Mg. The overall yield of recovery is 86.8 %. The purity of the final rare-earth metal is 98.8 %.

SOME of the reactions and procedures upon which modern techniques in the production of metal powders are based were used for 2000 years by the ancients to reduce iron and other metals from their ores. Despite this, however, the art of powder metallurgy is relatively new and probably stems from the introduction of incandescent electric lamp filaments. Attempts to improve upon Edison's carbon filaments led to the production, in order. of metallic filaments of osmium. tantalum.. and finally of tungsten, which ha, replaced the others and is the commercial product of today. These metallic filaments were originally manufactured by the extrusion and sintering of a mixture of the metal or its oxide with a reducing agent which also served as a binder. The time frame required to complete the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process for a new mine, or for the expansion of an existing mine, can range between 9 months to 24 months, or more. The time frame will vary depending on whether an Environmental Assessment (EA) or an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) will be completed. Completing properly designed baseline studies to collect natural resource data to support the EA or EIS prior to the start of the NEPA process can shorten this time frame. The two year natural resource baseline study completed by Homestake Mining Company for the Ruby Hill Mine, located in Eureka County, Nevada will be used as the case study to describe how properly designed and executed natural resource baseline studies streamlined the NEPA process.

Although mining is an old industry its management is quite a new science, and its complications are now being recognised as demanding expert knowledge in many branches of technical and professional education. Not the least amongst these isaccountancy, for probably its most important problem is "How to control the expenditure." Unlike most businesses a mining company stands almost entirely in the light of a purchaser in the world's markets, and not as a seller, except say for product so the established and perfected systems of modern industries cannot be adopted for mining purposes. For this reason it has been left for late years to consider the matter seriously, and now a number of well-managed concerns have devised costs systems to suit their own requirements.Very little, however, has been published and even that is disjoined and difficult to make use of. Some of the costs systems in vogue, although elaborate and imposing, are not of very great value for keeping check on wasteful expenditure, or for displaying the commercial effect brought about 'by any particular change in practice, or by an addition or alteration to a portion of existing plant.

Friction stir welding (FSW) is a pure solid-state joining process, which has been widely used in joining aluminum alloys with improved properties. This paper describes a three-dimensional simulation of FSW process, running the ANSYS package of finite element analysis to study the evolutional stress in the butt-welding of aluminum alloy 6061-T6. The model incorporates the mechanical effect of the tool and thermomechanical process of the welded material. The heat source involves the friction between the material and the probe and the shoulder. Thermal history and the evolution of longitudinal, lateral, and vertical stress in the friction stirred weld are simulated. The relation between the calculated residual stresses of the weld and the process parameters such as tool traverse speed is presented. Gold is mobilized and precipitated in a wide variety of environments ranging from those of weathering and biological phenomena, to pluton emplacement to deep metamorph ism . There are great gaps in our knowledge, particula rly with re pect to gold in very high temperature fl uids generated at near Moho depths. But uch flu id may play an important part in Archaean pluton associated lode gold deposits whe re ultra high temperature fluids, rich in C02-CO-COS, may be associated with magma underplating and crustal assi mil ation processes (sag subduction) associated with very den e ult ramafic magma . Other environment with great potential include those of major thru t fau lt and strike slip fa ult s where large quant ities of fluids are mobilized .

"Abstract: Diaphragm walls are used to provide a stable and watertight confinement for the construction of tunnels, underground railway stations, deep basements and other structures requiring deep excavations. Water seepage and soil loss through the joints have occurred on several occasions, causing extensive damage. This may have been due to uncontrolled concrete flow between the joints, unexpected geologic conditions or just poor workmanship.Different ways of quality assurance are applied on construction sites. Most of them rely on recording parameters of the construction equipment and conventional concrete quality control. In the frame of the EUREKA/ZIM project DiWaQ we have looked at several ways to perform non-destructive quality control. Some methods are to be applied after excavation before concreting (phase 1); others after the wall is completed (phase 2).For phase 1 we have used two different principles for checking the shape of the excavation, especially the joint to existing panels. A mechanical device which can be adapted to the excavating equipment was developed; field tested and validated on test and construction sites. It is described in detail in another paper in the same volume. A sonar-based device with a 10 mm resolution has shown good performance in the lab, but is still under development.For phase 2 different temperature sensors have been lowered into access holes to monitor the hydration heat developed during concrete curing. The same tubes can also be used to perform electromagnetic and ultrasonic crosshole measurements across or along joints to detect flaws. Especially the ultrasonic method has shown promising results on validation specimen at the BAM test site at Horstwalde, but limitations as well. Success substantially depended on the joint type, flaw size and distance of the sensors to the joint."
