A sumMary of the consumption of coal in 1945 shows that the coke industry ac-counted for 17 pct of the total coal used. No substitute for coke and the blast furnace in the reduction of iron ore has gained sufficient prominence so far to be given serious consideration. However, while the same slot-type ovens are being built and used now as were in use a few years ago, the problem of obtaining suitable coking coals, both high- and low-volatile, has forced many operators to revamp coal-blending facilities. Until the beginning of World War 11, high-temperature ooke plants were able to secure the required high-volatile and low-volatile coals from two or three seams and from three or four mines. Thus, many of our coke oven plants were able to operate with storage bins for two coals only. The vari-pnce in raw materials was not great, and uniformity of blend was a relatively simple problem. Since the beginning of World War 11, many and important changes have taken place. Demand for all coals increased greatly. Production, though kept as near maximum capacity as possible, could not meet the demands for coal generally, and particularly for the various kinds of coal which have proved to be satisfactory for specialized uses; coals were allocated as nearly as possible in the order of greatest need; storage piling was reduced to the minimum necessary to keep plants in operation; uniformity of quality could not be maintained, and with this last, uniformity of composition of blends for coking could not be maintained. Whereas before the war producers of metallurgical coke could fill their needs from three or four mines, by the end of the war it was not unusual to find shipments to a single coke oven plant coming from as many as 30 different mines, in a single month. Since many of the mines producing both high- and low-volatile coal for high-grade metallurgical coke are rapidly nearing de-pletion, the problem of seeking new sources and of blending a number of coals in each plant for the production of high-temperature coke is facing practically every producer in the United States at the present time, and is one which will probably continue for many years to come. Midwestern byproduct coke ovens in the Chicago and St. Louis areas use annually from 12 to 15 million tons of bituminous coals which are transported 500 to 700 miles from the Appalachian coal fields of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and eastern Kentucky. Approximately two-thirds of this coal is high-volatile bituminous. The critical transportation problem confronting the nation in 1943, and the growing scarcity of the best Appalachian coking coals, prompted the Illinois Geological Survey to propose a research program in which would be studied the coking properties of blends of low-sulphur, high-volatile Illinois coal with the high- and low-volatile coals from the eastern fields. Crystallographic modifications and kinetics of solid-state phase trans-formations were determined for five rare-earth" sesquioxides--La2O3, Nd2O3, Sm2O3, Eu2O3, and Gd2O3. Oxides used for crystal modification studies were prepared by thermal decomposition of the following high-purity salts of the five rare-earth elements--carbonates, chlorides, fluorides, nitrates, oxalates, and sulfates. X-ray diffraction patterns of the cubic and hexagonal oxides were indexed by a graphical method and patterns of the monoclinic oxides by Ito's method. The kinetics of crystallographic transformation were determined by high-temperature X-ray diffractometry. The kinetic data were interpreted using a shrinking sphere model. All of the transformations followed first order kinetics. Activation energies were calculated by application of the Arrhenius equation. These solid-state phase inversions were concluded to occur by a reconstructive transformation mechanism.

To assist the taxpayer of the oil and gas industry in correctly and expeditiously preparing his Federal tax returns, the Bureau of Internal Revenue has prepared a "Manual for the Oil and Gas Industry Under the Revenue Act of 1918." Although the endeavor has been made to anticipate all questions that may be asked, it is recognized that such a manual is only general and cannot cover all cases that may exist. The Manual is based largely upon information gathered during the fall of the year 1918 by a corps of geologists, technologists, and engineers. The investigation was undertaken primarily to furnish a basis for arriving at valuations, and depletion and depreciation deductions in connection with oil and gas properties. All fields in the United States were canvassed. Records of production of thousands of properties were collected and tabulated. These were carefully classified and studied by the most competent and experienced men in the country and the average future production curves and tables of valuation data were produced as a result of this study. Twelve properties in the Riverside Mountains have moderate to high potential, for silver, gold, copper, and molybdenum. Six properties in the Big Maria Mountains have moderate potential for zinc, lead, copper, silver, iron ore, and limestone. The Big Maria Mountains also have occurrences of building stone. Four properties in or near the study area have low-grade gold-silver-copper resources totalling more than 300 thousand tons (270,000 t). An estimated 29 million tons (26 million t) of limestone and dolomite, and 620,000 long tons (630,000 t) of iron ore are in the Big Maria Mountains section of the study area. INTRODUCTION The Big Maria Mountains Wilderness Study Area covers about 50,538 acres (20,453 ha) near the Colorado River in eastern Riverside County, California (fig. 1). The study includes portions of both the Big Maria and Riverside Mountains. It lies north of Blythe, California and south of California Highway 62 in the Mojave Desert province of the California Desert Conservation Area. The study area consists of two mountain ranges surrounded mostly by broad alluvial slopes or bajadas. It extends for 25 mi (40 km) from the Riverside Mountains on the north, to the south end of the elongate Big Maria Mountains.

The synthetic rock mass (SRM) approach for modelling jointed and veined rock has been at the forefront of caving geomechanics research for years. A well-constructed and calibrated SRM model can capture the full rock behaviour at a macroscopic scale. Traditionally, SRM technology employed bonded particle models (BPM) due to their ability to model rock’s response to loading without prior specification of behaviour. The SRM modelling process requires the BPM to simulate intact rock and the subsequent introduction of fractures or veins by changing bonding characteristics between the particles. However, bonded particle materials have difficulty reproducing both the compressive and tensile strengths of intact rock. This and other limitations of BPM have been the driving force in exploring the potential of grain-based (2D) and bonded block (3D) models (BBM).This paper reports on recent work exploring the applicability of both BPMs and BBMs in 3D to the modelling of intact rock. The advantages and limitations of both BPMs and BBMs are addressed based on the results of numerical simulations using the PFC3D and 3DEC distinct element codes. The preliminary results suggest that BBMs are better suited for simulating intact rock behaviour than BPMs. Ongoing work aims to better qualify the applicability of BBMs under different conditions. The maximum net return from the sale of ores and concentrates of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc accrues to the producer when these mine products are marketed to the best advantage. Data are presented that the producer, especially the small mine operator, can use to survey available markets and make a preliminary estimate of the net return to be expected from an ore, on the basis of typical mill, smelter, and freight schedules. A review of the industry is presented by States in which recent production statistics are given, marketing facilities are discussed, and locations of principal mining districts, custom mills, and smelters are shown. Explanations of treatment processes, ore types, treatment charges, payments for metals, and deductions are given. Published rail and truck freight rates for mine products, based on marketing patterns developed over many years, are listed and explained.

Several methods exist by which the capacity of a dense media separation (DMS) plant can be improved: 1) Increase the feed rate in spite of efficiency 2) Replace with bigger equipment 3) Add whole new module 4) Replace total plant 5) Change over to four shift/ seven days per week roster 6) Replace with alternative process 7) Increase the availability and utilization Options 1 ? 6 have varying degrees of cost implications. The seventh option would seem to be the easiest. Normally it is also the function of the plant operating and maintenance team to maximize this. Usually higher operating and maintenance cost are associated with an increase in these parameters. A general principle that is applicable to plants and systems is that as the complexity increases, the total availability decreases. By simplifying the flow line it may be possible to reduce cost while at the same time increase the availability and utilization. The typical standard DMS flow line contains components that compensate for the variance in pump performance or for the inefficient recovery of ferrosilicon with additional equipment. Preconcentration of precious and base metal ore types is becoming more relevant with the discovery, the development and the operation of many lower grade deposits around the world. Ore preconcentration designates an operation consisting of sorting an ore to reduce the quantity of waste material sent to the concentrator. It can be seen as rejecting waste material as much as possible, without compromising the recovery, or as the recovery of as much valuable metal as possible into an optimum mass yield. Benefits of preconcentration are multiple: grinding energy savings, costs reduction, lower environmental footprint, extension of the reserves, etc. However, all of these benefits do not apply simultaneously and are not applicable to each ore type. Technologies employed for preconcentration are highly dependent on ore properties, especially on the particle size at which the gangue is liberated. Thus, from coarser to finer particle sizes, technologies such as screening, ore sorting, gravity separation (Dense Media Separation (DMS) and jigs) and coarse flotation could be used for the rejection of liberated gangue. The difficulty starts when a benchmark is needed to select a suitable technology, especially for low-grade gold deposits. This paper presents the challenges of comparing lab-scale technologies (DMS versus jig) for gold preconcentration. The experimental data will show to what extent comparing two lab-scale gravity technologies for gold preconcentration can be challenging. An attempt to evaluate the energy savings by assessing the hardness of the tailings after gravity separation will also be presented. A major R&D programme for the application of bacterial oxidation to the pretreatment of refractory sulphide gold ores was started at Mintek in the early 1980s. This arose from an established expertise base in the bacterial leaching of base-metal sulphide ores. The refractory gold programme has been supported by a number of South African gold-mining companies, but major support has been provided by the Anglo American Corporation of South Africa (AAC) and the AAC Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company Limited · (Vaal Reefs). The Mintek-AAC collaboration has been formalized as a joint-venture technology agreement for the comme;cialization, as well as continued development and improvement, of the bacterial oxidation process (MINBAC). From a process standpoint, bacterial oxidation involves the contacting of slurries of finely ground sulphide concentrate with suitable strains of iron-sulphur oxidizing bacteria, which act as the catalyst to promote sulphide·· oxidation by oxygen from air. Process engineering is simplified in that this reaction is carried out at low temperatures and ambient pressures. The view was taken that the successful development and implementation of the MINBAC technology should be based on parallel R&D aimed at an understanding of the process fundamentals, the process engineering and scale-up requirements, as well as the ancillary requirements for the gold recovery-processes and environmental management. This has represented a major R&D effort at a total cost to date of around US $10 million.

The advent of larger quantities of -1/4 inch coal in the raw feed to the preparation plant and the necessity of recovering this material has made the problem of meeting product moisture specifications more difficult. For a number of years thermal dryers have been used advantageously as a means of reducing fine coal moisture content where the over-all economics would justify such an installation. However, these units are not without their drawbacks because of high capital and operating costs, safety hazards and possible degradation of the product, and thus an alternative method of moisture reduction is highly desirable. After the various mechanical variables associated with filtration have been optimized, an examination of theory shows that surface tension and liquid viscosity are the only two remaining variables which might be altered to reduce moisture content.

"New generation of Al-Mg-Si alloys with thermally stable dispersoids that prevent recrystallization and grain growth during hot deformation are currently used in automotive components requiring good formability. Alloy chemistry controls the phase formation especially age-hardening precipitates, dispersoids, and primary intermetallic which have pronounced effect on grain structure, strength and formability. In this work, thermodynamic calculations have been used to predict the effects of varying levels of Si (0.5-1.5wt%), Mg (0.5-1.5wt%) and Mn (0.1-2.5wt%) on phase selection. Thermodynamic calculations have been performed in equilibrium and non-equilibrium conditions via the FactSage™ software using the FTlite database. Selected compositions have been cast, heat treated, extruded and characterized through scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy and electron channeling contrast imaging techniques. The calculations showed that at the hot deformation temperature of ~540 oC, exceeding certain Mg and Si levels would lead to retained *-Mg2Si intermetallics and Si particles at the grain boundaries in addition to a-Al-(Mn,Fe)-Si. It was found that retained *-Mg2Si phase which adversely affects formability can be avoided for Si+2Mg levels lower than 2.3wt%. FactSage calculations also showed that increasing Mn from 0.5wt% to 1wt% leads to an increase in the amount of dispersoids (from 1wt% to 2wt%) that can potentially slow down recrystallization and grain growth during hot deformation and improve formability. Calculations at room temperature also show that for an alloy with 0.7wt% Mg, excess Si beyond 0.7 wt% promotes the precipitation of Si clusters in the Al matrix that accelerate natural age-hardening. Results were confirmed by experimental investigation.INTRODUCTIONAluminum alloy 6082 (Al-Mg-Si) is used in the automotive industry because of its high strength, and good weldability (I. J. Polmear, 2006). The alloy is age-hardenable through the precipitation of ß-Mg2Si and its precursors, and the recrystallization is usually inhibited by Mn- and Cr-containing dispersoids formed through high temperature heat treatments (I. Polmear & Couper, 1988). However, it is known that minor changes in alloy chemistry (Mg/Si ratio) can have significant influences on the ductility and formability of these alloys by altering phase selection and the resultant microstructure (Gupta, Lloyd, & Court, 2001; McQueen & Celliers, 1997; Zajac, Hutchinson, Johansson, & Gullman, 1994). For automotive applications where wrought alloys (usually extrusions) are cold-formed to produce suspension components, the chemistry of the alloys and the extruded structure are of crucial importance as they determine the formability at room temperature (Asensio-Lozano, Suárez-Peña, & Vander Voort, 2014). In this study, thermodynamic calculations along with experimental investigations were carried out on the Al-Mg-Si system to understand their phase formation and precipitation hardening as a function of alloy composition."

Twin 8.5 m diameter, 10 km long headrace tunnels under overburdens of up to 1870 m were excavated for the neelum jhelum hydroelectric project in north-eastern pakistan using two main beam gripper tunnel boring machines (tbms). Rock bursts were encountered and presented a significant danger to personnel and equipment. Micro seismic monitoring was installed to analyze rock burst characteristics and to create a database for future reference. Correlation of rock burst characteristics improved the ability to predict the likelihood, location, severity, and number of rock burst events. Hydrofluoric acid (HF) is traditionally used in plant operation to separate feldspars from quartz. It acts during the conditioning step as a pH regulator and an activating agent providing an excellent selectivity. However, a corrosive chemical environment and the ecological impacts from the potential fluoride ion contamination are limiting factors to use this chemical agent at an industrial scale. Investigations of the amine-feldspar interactions in the absence and presence of non-linear long-chain alcohols were carried out on two ore samples. The presence of alcohol molecules led to form a closed packed layer only on the surface of feldspars. The highest order and packing at the feldspar surface were observed with a particular alkyl chain structure as Guerbert alcohols. A new flotation process was developed and tested at both lab and pilot scales on different feldspar ores. The Guerbert alcohols allow to perform a feldspar concentrate with very low content in quartz (2.3-3.5 %) and feldspars recovery from 78 to 81 % while the aliphatic isoalcohols show a more higher recovery level (88-89 %). New HF-free process is strongly dependent on the pH range (1.7-2.5) and sulphuric acid consumption during conditioning steps. Optimal amine/alcohol weight ratio is ranged between 0.8 and 1.0. The values below 0.8 decrease strongly the flotation selectivity and the quartz recovery within the feldspar concentrates is higher than that occurs with HF.

"Compound casting is a very attractive approach to reduce the weight of components for some specific applications while keep both the functional and the mechanical property requirements. In this work, Al-7Si-Mg alloy /copper compound castings were produced through a low pressure die casting process. To reduce the oxide present in the interface, flux coating of the copper pipes was tested. The interface layer formed between the two alloys was investigated using Optical Microscopy (OM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS). Vickers Micro-hardness was also measured across the interface. Results showed that the flux coating prevented the formation of the metallic bond between copper and aluminum. Instead, high concentrations of potassium, magnesium and fluoride, coinciding with formation of KMgF3 and MgF2, were detected in the interface. In the castings without surface treatment, a continuous metallurgical bond was achieved. In the bond layer, various Al-Cu intermetallic phases have been detected. In addition, formation of primary silicon particles in the reaction layer was observed in all castings. The mechanism for the formation of the intermetallic phases and the strength of the interface layer have been discussed.INTRODUCTION Recent development in the automotive industry has focused on producing lightweight components, which can reduce CO2 emission and increase the efficiency. Often, one material alone is not able to meet the requirements for a specific use. The need for lightweight bimetallic components has therefore increased. Aluminum-copper bimetallic components can be used in wires and bus bars where conductivity is an important factor (Lee, Bang, & Jung, 2005). Compared to Al-Cu alloys, Al-Cu bimetallic components can reduce both weight and cost without reducing electrical and thermal conductivity (Sheng, Yang, Xi, Lai, & Ye, 2011). A challenge is, however, that aluminum and copper have high affinity to each other, especially at elevated temperatures. This causes formation of brittle intermetallic phases with high electric resistance (Liu, Wang, Sui, Wang, & Wenjiang, 2016). In addition, both metals are subjected to oxide formation on the surface. Copper is especially exposed to oxidation at elevated temperatures (Pinnel, Tompkins, & Heath, 1979), while a thermodynamically stable oxide layer will spontaneously form on the aluminum surface (Papis, Loeffler, & Uggowitzer, 2009). Oxides are known to be passive substrates, which will reduce wettability and will thus prevent the formation of metallic bonding between aluminum and copper (Papis, Hallstedt, Löffler, & Uggowitzer, 2008)."

Sulphuric acid plants now and then see unexpected increases in SO2 emissions. Our experience is that it is not always easy for the acid plants to pin point the exact reason for the SO2 increase. Sometimes a catalyst bed is sacrificed even though reliable emperature readings and gas analyses could have verified satisfactory activity, hence the leaking heat exchanger is never discovered and after the shutdown the SO2 emissions are still too high. This paper will look into some basic catalyst management tools: Good record keeping is a necessity for collection of representative catalyst samples, reliable operating data is an inevitable starting point for all analysis and trending of operating data is a must for plant optimisation and troubleshooting. In addition these catalyst management tools will give a continuous updated knowledge of the catalyst status in each bed providing the basis for a more effective replacement strategy. The most typical reasons for increasing SO2 emissions will be presented together with easy guidelines for cross-checking of operating data, temperature optimisation and good record keeping.

Grinding Mill Operation and Maintenance - Central to Asset Management Since 2005, RME has pursued a vision for a new grinding plant operational paradigm, made possible by RME's latest Mill Relining Systems. At some sites, new liners degrade SAG mill performance. The variables include mill volume loss, rotational speed limitations (ball strike) and liner designs developed for longer and longer life but without a backward glance at metallurgical consequences of whole plant performance. Freshly relined mills can initially deliver as little as 80 per cent of their maximum throughput, that maximum occurring toward the end of the liners' wear life. RME's proposition is to see new liners designed for maximum commercial performance. This may mean more frequent mill relines but with liners designed to yield optimum grinding, metallurgical and profitability performance, not maximum life. In other words, mill liner profiles and relining speed become key profitability contributors and not simply 'must do' maintenance functions and costs. This paper includes a short history of RME's Mill Relining System development (Appendix A). These are the enabling technologies which permit more frequent liner exchange without incurring additional downtime imposts. The body of this paper outlines RME's vision of a 'liner profile vs. profitability' commercial model, underpinned by the rigour of PAS 55-1:2008 Asset Management Part 1: Specification for the optimised management of physical assets. The technical elements can be developed either intuitively (based on plant experience) or by using a combination of new measurement and modelling technologies. These new measurement and modelling tools provide the opportunity to predict the optimum technical solution for the maximum commercial outcome. Much of this can be modelled off-line, in the virtual world, before asking senior management to commit to an expensive liner experiment. The potential benefits are compelling.

Eriez HydroFloat(TM) separators and Canadian Process Technologies (CPT) flotation columns have been developed to overcome the limitations of traditional flotation cells in recovering coarse and fine particles, respectively. The flotation column can effectively separate 30-5 µm phosphate. Several industrial-scale HydroFloat separators have been installed in phosphate and potash beneficiation plants. Industrial-scale ultra-coarse (+850 µm) phosphate separation results suggest that a more-than 40% BonePhosphate- of-Lime (BPL) recovery increase and a 37% collector consumption reduction can be achieved. The paper describes the applications of Eriez HydroFloat separators to coarse particle separation and the CPT flotation column to fine/ultrafine particle flotation.

SHORTLY after our previous paper on this subject was printed,1 we located a source of uncertainty in the results arising from the unexpected fact that hydrogen slowly reduces silica at 1100° C. in presence of iron, even when the iron nowhere touches the silica, although in absence of iron it does not do so. This difficulty has been completely obviated by the use of a small high-frequency furnace, which enables us to heat the specimen for analysis without raising the temperature of the silica vessel to a point at which any appreciable reduction of the silica glass occurs. We now describe this modification of procedure, and present some typical results obtained with it. For any given specimen of steel, the results are entirely definite and. reproducible, but their precise significance is still open to some question, as indeed is true of all methods of oxygen determination so far developed. Further elucidation of this question is to be expected from the cooperative comparison of the several methods now under way under the auspices of the Bureau of Standards at the instance of the Iron and Steel Division of the A.I.M.E.
